OvEMBER opens with All Saints’ or All Hallows Day, the Christian celebration of all the redeemed, both the known and the unknown. So 31st October is Hallowe’en, but this is a preChristian festival marking the end of the Celtic year and the beginning of winter, the day when ghosts and ghoulies were thought to be out and about and the spirits of the dead could revisit the mortal world. Bells used to be rung in Blandford to guide them back home from purgatory, but sadly this and other folk traditions associated with ‘the night of the living dead’ have long been replaced by the American abomination Trick or Treat. Immediately following All Hallows is All Souls’ Day when the dead are presumably safely back in purgatory and our prayers are needed to speed their journey into Heaven. Then on the 5th comes Guy Fawkes Night when bonfires and fireworks are lit to commemorate his failed attempt to kill King James I at the state opening of Parliament in 1605. I sometimes wonder whether people are celebrating his attempt or his failure, but perhaps this doesn’t matter more than 400 years after the event. And in early November the last of Visitorland’s carnivals – in Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury – provide a further connection with Mr Fawkes as their origins lie in the 1600s when many parts of Somerset took to the streets each year to commemorate the Gunpowder Plot. On 15th November Parliament is giving us the chance to take part in a new event which it hopes will become a tradition, the chance to vote for a Police and Crime Commissioner. The job title is, I hope, a misnomer. I don’t want to elect someone to commission crime. Preferable would be someone to detect it and, better still, to prevent it. The Commissioner will, we are told, set the policing policies and budget and hold the Chief Constable to account for performance, tasks currently undertaken – with little public criticism – by the local
police authority which comprises elected members of the various councils in the area. So who is a suitable and qualified individual to fill this potentially very powerful post? Inevitably the political parties have all scratched around to find candidates, but do we really want our policing policies to be dictated by a party hack? The Home Office, clearly worried that turnout will be derisory, is spending vast amounts of taxpayers money on a campaign to urge us to vote. For the sake of democracy I hope people will flock in their hordes to the polling station, not to vote but to spoil their ballot paper by writing on it exactly what they think of the concept of Police Commissioners. For the election is a trick, not a treat, to saddle us with another American abomination, politicised policing. NN.

Letters to the Editor Railways
Sir, With reference to your recent editorial concerning the above with particular regard to our local area you really are seriously deluded if you think that privatisation has had a beneficial effect upon our railways. To say that more people are travelling by train is misleading. At peak times trains are very overcrowded but at other times trains are running around nearly empty. You only have to look at the series of programmes on BBC by Michael Portillo to see that. As to Somerton and Langport there is absolutely no possibility that trains will ever call at either of these places again because the stations were demolished many years ago. If all the money that has been wasted on privatisation had been pumped into British Rail by now we could have had a much improved railway. It is virtually impossible for the average person to travel by train now unless a cheap fare can be obtained, and the only way to do this is to book online weeks or even months in advance. This is frequently impossible. My son has to commute in London on a service (?) run by First (which also runs the West of England service through Castle Cary) which, to be kind, is diabolical in
the extreme. 4 car trains are run frequently at peak periods (wtf!) and cancellations are rife. In addition the platform screens are giving passengers information about a train as though it is running and will eventually turn up when it has already been announced that this particular train has been cancelled!!! What an absolute shambles, and this unfortunately is all too typical of train travel in this country in the 21st Century. Personally, I am too ashamed to travel by train in this country. I used to travel a great deal by train in the good old days of BR, but not now. So, all my travel by train is done in countries where they still have a pride in their railways and therefore run truly excellent services mostly at very reasonable cost. C. Noble Email

Information in Adverts
Sir, I’ve noticed that many advertisers only give a mobile phone no. This gives no idea whatsoever of their location which means that ‘free delivery locally’ is rather meaningless. In any case, if I do not have any idea of where an advertiser is located then, quite simply, I will never ring them. Even for the display ads, there is often no full address or even postcode. For a garden centre, restaurant of other business that relies on you travelling there this cuts them out – unless you happen to be local. M. Rowe Reader near Wells Somerset

Startrack is organised by South Somerset District Council and Yeovil Olympiads Athletics Club and offers young people aged between eight and 14 the opportunity to learn the basic skills of athletics in a competitive but friendly environment. Jonathan Calderbank, Facilities Management Officer at SSDC said, ‘Following the incredible performance of Team GB at the Olympics and Paralympics interest in Athletics has never been higher. ‘Our Monday night Junior Athletics Sessions have never been busier and I am anticipating that Startrack will be bursting with energy. Aviva Startrack is UK Athletics flagship grassroots programme, and aims to give young people real athletics experiences in schemes across the country.’ Cllr Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at SSDC says, ‘2012 has been such an important year for athletics and sport in general. Activities such as Startrack channel the energy and enthusiasm of young people in a structured and positive environment. ‘World Heptathlon Champion Jessica Ennis started her athletics career on her local Startrack scheme as a 10 year old before joining an athletics club. Knowing this should really help to inspire these young athletes.’ More information on Startrack is available at www.south somerset.gov.uk/startrack or by calling 01935 462462.

The one-to-one sessions will be free to attend, although donations to Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance will be much appreciated. We were given a list of what was needed and were really very happy to provide some hardware for such a worthwhile project.’ The donation includes nails and screws; which are vital to enable the team of adults with learning difficulties at The Green Shed to continue constructing larger items using recycled wood from old broken pallets. The newly created items are then sold at Castle Gardens and the profits are ploughed back into The Green Shed. The Green Shed, which opened in October 2010 and was partfunded by local body Chalk + Cheese, is situated in an area at the rear of Castle Gardens. It was developed after the Whitehouse Resource Centre in Sherborne closed and currently opens four days a week during which time adults with learning difficulties are able to use the workshop to further develop community recycling projects, including plant pot recycling, wood recycling, knitting, compost making and veggie growing. By now many of you will be aware that the Britannia Carnival Club cart did not make an appearance at Castle Cary Carnival, and unfortunately, nor will it be attending any others on the circuits. In the last few weeks, Cart preparation has been hindered by illness affecting many club members and the major breakdown of the generator that powers the ‘shed’s’ lighting and power tools. So, after a long discussion, the very difficult decision was taken to close the shed doors, wrap up the cart for the winter and then carry on with it in the spring thus allowing it to be brought out much earlier next year, ready and able to compete in more carnivals. This does not mean that carnival will be completely forgotten this year. Many of the club members either entered or helped with Castle Cary Carnival – as marshals, collectors and / or masqueraders and they are busy practising a totally new dance routine for a walking entry in the Bridgwater Carnival circuit. As true carnivalites they continue with the carnival spirit. On behalf of all club members thanks go to the Chairman, Giggy Burch, for his continued support, dedication and enthusiasm towards the club and for the amazing patience he has with the ‘youngsters’ – all of whom respect his wealth of knowledge and expertise in all aspects of carnival. With him nurturing these lads and embracing their enthusiasm – Carnival will never die. See you next year!

Andrew M. Knight D.O. Osteopath celebrates 25 years of practice in Castle Cary THIS YEAR is a milestone for local Osteopath Andrew Knight D.O. marking twenty five years of serving the local community. Andrew qualified and was accepted as a member of the then Register of Osteopaths in 1986. He moved from Surrey to Castle Cary the following year, becoming an active member of the local community and involving himself in the governance of the primary school for many years. He started business initially above the Bakery (now Burns the Bread) in Fore Street, later moving to Woodcock Street. Today Andrew has premises within the light and airy Manor Lodge Health and Beauty Clinic. Osteopathy can be used to treat a wide number of medical conditions such as back pain, repetitive strain injury, minor sports injuries, postural problems caused by poor posture at a desk or driving and tension headaches. Osteopathy can be used to treat all age groups with the most common being the middle-aged. Osteopathy has been used for centuries and is based on the principle that a persons wellbeing depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues all functioning smoothly together - this is done with physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints and to relieve tension - this in turn enhances the blood and nerve supply to tissues and helps the body heal itself. In addition to Osteopathy, Andrew is extremely interested in natural health care, which led him to train in Applied Kinesiology. Applied Kinesiology is the gathering of person specific information regarding health and well
b e i n g , together with allergy advice and testing. Osteopathy and Applied Kinesiology together offers a truly Holistic Therapy addressing conditions from a structural, chemical and mental aspect; treating the body as a whole. Andrew is experienced in Applied Kinesiology and has taught on the subject both here and abroad. Nutritional advice and allergy testing is available - this is suitable for such problems as fatigue, headaches and bloating. Andrew also uses natural flower remedies. He prides himself that most of his patients only need a single visit to put them on the road to recovery. After improving mobility he will offer advice on posture and exercise to keep mobile if necessary. Andrew is fully qualified and registered with the General Osteopathic Council. He is available daily at his Castle Cary Practice and on Wednesday and Friday Mornings each week in Somerton. In his spare time he writes for an archery magazine providing articles on stance, posture and shooting style. He also provides support to Team GB members and the current Field Archery Champion - so you know you are in safe hands! If you are suffering with a bad back or an allergy contact Andrew Knight D.O. whether it ever was the rectory. And behind the 19th and 20th century facades of some of the town centre shops are buildings dating from earlier centuries.
During the 18th century some larger properties began to appear in the town, such as the handsome house built on Bailey Hill in 1767 that is now the post

The latter, now named Northfield House, is certainly polite, in the sense of being refined and elegant, with its central bay window providing clear views along the High Street and Ansford Road and its garden at the back stretching to the open hillside. When I first visited the town back in the 1970s it was the Northfield House Hotel, run by Messrs Lee and Chalmers, but by the mid-80s it had become the offices of Skyline Associates,

Beechfield House dates from around 1770 but was rebuilt in 1881 after a disastrous fire. The property next door, Ochiltree House, is somewhat later, built around 1825. Like The Pines it is unusual for Cary in being faced with brick rather than local stone. John Boyd, the horse-hair weaving entrepreneur, moved into Ochiltree House in 1851 and lived there until his death in 1890.
A browse round the streets will reveal countless examples of good-quality provincial architecture dating from the mid and late 19th century, products of the town’s past prosperity. This period gave Cary not only a lot of new housing, shops, factories, the gas works and the railway station but also many prominent and much-loved buildings including the Old vicarage (1846), the

They are an important part of what gives Cary its special character – its local distinctiveness. Roger Otton & the Visitor CASTLE CARY lost a respected resident and former businessman this year when Roger Otton died suddenly on 11th June, 2012. Here at The Visitor we were particularly saddened to hear of Roger’s passing because it was thanks to him that this magazine got off to its flying start, back in 1983. Well-known locally for his electrical business and as one of the town’s charismatic characters it was Roger’s unenviable task to persuade the businesses of Castle Cary to advertise in the very first issue of the The Visitor. And what an Adman he turned out to be! Issue 1, which covered Castle Cary alone was eagerly awaited. It had 10 pages and 11 adverts ... an encouraging start. The success of this first issue, and Roger’s persuasive tongue, attracted more Cary advertisers for Issue 2 along with a few outsiders - from Wincanton, Sparkford, Bruton, Sherborne and Templecombe. The issue had 62 advertisers and the magazine had doubled in size to 20 pages. By Issue 3 Roger was having to travel further afield for his advertisers as the next issue was to include Wincanton ... and circulation had increased to cover distribution in Bruton. Roger was gaining momentum - 73 advertisers over the 24 pages of Issue 3. Advertising content continued to grow under Roger’s expertise and the distribution area grew along with it, taking in Somerton, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street and Yeovil. Issue 4, carried 95 adverts over its 28 pages. Could these monthly increases continue, people asked. Well, yes they could it seemed with Roger in charge and advertisements in the fifth issue totalled 112. It was at this point that Roger came to a crossroads in his life and had to make a difficult decision. Having made such a success of his Adman duties the magazine had grown rapidly and he was spending less and less time with his own wellestablished business of Otton & Son, Electricals and Electrical Contractors, and it was beginning to suffer. Therefore, due to these family business commitments, he made the decision to leave The Visitor but continued to be a staunch supporter of the publication until his death. As The Visitor celebrates its 29th anniversary this November it acknowledges with gratitude Roger’s immense enthusiasm and commitment in those early months of its production. MOTOR VINTAGE Motor Cycling I OFTEN WONDER why the price of old vehicles continues to rise. I also wonder why people are prepared to pay so much to own a particular vehicle. Although we actually own our vehicles we are merely the custodians of them in readiness for the next generation. We all hope that there will be a next generation to look after them and enjoy the use of them as we do. But do we really own them at all? We all restore them to look factory fresh, just as they were when they rolled off the production line. But if I truly considered them as my property why not restore them as I would like to have them? I should be able to paint them any colour I choose, and be able to paint shiny bits black and have some parts shiny when they were originally painted. Perhaps my next vintage machine should be painted with glittering metallic paints in a myriad of colours and a mural on the tank, or perhaps painted all over with stealth black matt finish paint. Would our lives be a little more interesting and colourful if we did such things? Being rather staid and a traditionalist I expect I will continue with the factory finish and colours for fear of what fellow enthusiasts might think, and that the machine would be devalued in some way if I took that course of action. Perhaps the greater power lies with the machines and they actually own me instead. At the local DvC Auction recently several motorcycles came under the gavel and some were
reasonably priced and some made extremely good money. A Honda CB550 was sold for £6,800 (plus buyers premium and vAT) which seems expensive. Another Honda a 1969 CB750 sold for £12,750 which was also expensive but it must have been a very early model. Others made more modest money with usable bikes changing hands for as little as £500. Or how about a restoration project, a 1961 BMW Isetta Three Wheel Bubble car which went unsold for £3,500. I have always fancied one of those, so perhaps it was just as well that I was absent on the day of the sale. During November the local Sections of the vintage Motor Cycle Club have the following events planned. Starting with Somerset their club night on the 1st will be a showing of photographs with an image projector, this is followed on the 4th by their Guy Fawkes Run from Banwell Garden Centre. The Wessex veteran and vintage Section has a film show at its club night on the 12th. The Dorset Section has a Quiz and Social Evening on the 14th at Pulham, and on the 18th will be a Winter Run starting at Orchard Park Garden Centre at Gillingham. As always you can get further details by ringing 01935-872528. vintage Club events come in all forms. Recently we had the pleasure of a four day riding event on the Isle of Wight. Luckily the weather was kind to us for all four days. The whole event is very casual and relaxed with no rushing about. We travelled over on a Friday and attended a social evening that night to explain the activities ahead of us. Saturday morning

saw everyone riding to Newport where the machines were put on display and was followed by another display during the afternoon at Newport Quay where we joined about four hundred classic cars. Lots to see and very interesting. Sunday saw us taking part in The Scurry which is a 75 mile tour of the island and takes the shape of a navigational trial. A suitable lunch stop had been organised for refreshments and a rest period for riders and machines alike. Monday saw us ride to Godshill which is a very picturesque village with lots to see. During the afternoon we rode on to Cowes where we visited the Island’s Model Engineering Club. Model trains, boats on the special lake, and larger steam trains giving free rides around the grounds were all enjoyed by all. On Tuesday we rode to the Havenstreet Preserved Railway. We spent the day having rides on steam trains and looking at the rail museum and visiting the workshops where engines and rolling stock are serviced, repaired and refurbished. In the evening another social evening with the prizegiving took place and completed a very relaxed and enjoyable few days. The homeward trip took place on Wednesday. Events such as this enable you to enjoy your old bike for a few days in fresh scenery, and make new friends in the process. The Somerset Section organise two weekend trips to Wales and Cornwall and Dorset do the Weymouth Week, so there is plenty of choice. Why not take your classic for a holiday, I thoroughly recommend this type of event to you. Another enjoyable recent event was the Wessex veteran and vintage Sections Old Sarum Run. Based at the Old Sarum Airfield this event is another which is restricted to pre 1931 machines. 16 entrants signed on and a route
of 37 miles specially selected for these old machines was used. No severe gradients either uphill or downhill meant that early machines could cope with safety. A few mechanical gremlins showed their ugly faces but this all seems part of the fun when riding these ancient bits of iron.
My picture this month shows a rare Raleigh v twin from the twenties which is owned and ridden by Paul Lydford from Shaftesbury. I have no details of the plane but it makes a good backdrop. Whenever you bought a new car or motorcycle in years gone by the first thing most people did was to individualise it in some way. Perhaps go faster stripes, or a tuning kit, or even wider wheels. This practice seems to have gone by the wayside. Now our friends in Europe are proposing a scheme whereby all vehicles can only be fitted with replacement parts from the original maker or parts made to the same specification. This is to be done all in the name of road safety. This scheme could well encompass our old vehicles. Now how many 10 year old vehicles are exactly as per the factory specification. Now think how many 50 year old vehicles match this criteria. Non compliance could mean vehicles taken off the road. All old vehicle clubs are fighting this proposal on the grounds that it would be impractical and impossible to police. You have been warned! Rod Hann.

Business & Professional robert Stone & Co, chartered accountants and tax advisers in ilminster answers questions from small businesses in Somerset ... Q1. i am employed by a charity that provides me with a Skoda Yeti car as my work involves transporting disabled people. i pay for all the petrol, but the charity reimburses me for workrelated journeys at 15p per mile. this rate has not changed since June 2011, although the price of petrol has increased. Can i claim back any more of my petrol costs for work journeys from the tax office? robert Stone replies:
unfortunately not. The advisory fuel rate for cars with petrol engines of up to 1400cc is 15p per mile and it hasn't changed since 1 June 2011. The rates for LPG cars and diesels have moved slightly over that period but not much. You could ask your employer to pay more per mile, but you will then be taxed on the excess above 15p per mile, unless you can show your car is particularly fuel-hungry, which is unlikely for a Skoda.
records. however, if the Taxman suspects that you have been under-recording your sales, because you receive many payments in cash, which are not immediately banked, you may have a problem. We can help you set up a system that will accurately record your sales and keep the Taxman happy.
Q3. my office junior is paid exactly the national minimum wage (nmW). Do i have to put his wages up from 1 october 2012? robert Stone replies:
It depends how old your employee is. From 1 october 2012 the NMW rate for those aged 21 and over rises from £6.08 to £6.19 per hour, and the apprentice rate is increased to £2.65 per hour. however the rates for 16 to 20 year olds have not been increased. If you have an urgent query, do not hesitate to contact Robert Stone on 01460 55661 or email your questions to: info@thevisitor magazine.co.uk

Q2. i'm a painter and decorator, working mainly for individual householders. i only give out an invoice for work done if my customer asks for one. is this acceptable to the taxman? i'm not vat registered.

Panasonic Sales and Service —*—
robert Stone replies:
As you are not VAT registered there is no legal requirement to issue invoices for every sale, but it is good business practice. If you accurately record the money you receive from customers, and those amounts can be tied up to the cash and cheques you bank, the Taxman should not have a problem with your business

LOOKING GOOD family Health with
Jenna evans Superfoods – Part 25
MoRe NuTTY superfoods this month as we look at some of my favourites – pecans, pine nuts and pistachios. Pecan – Native to North America the pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis) can reach as high as 150 metres and produce 90kg of nuts per harvest. Pecans have a sweetish, delicate flavour and work well in many dishes. Pecans are high fat nuts, rich in heart healthy monounsaturated fatty acids. Pecans are a great source of nutrients including B vitamins, vitamin e, calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, potassium, selenium and zinc. Pecans are also high in plant sterols – such as those added to ‘functional foods’ for lowering cholesterol. In fact pecans have been investigated many times for their ability to lower cholesterol levels and along with other nuts are often recommended as part of a nutritionally dense cholesterol managing diet. Pecans contain oxalates so those with a history of oxalate containing kidney stones should limit their consumption. Pine nuts – The seeds from various species of pine tree. These nuts have a light, creamy flavour and are probably most familiar to us from the Italian dish pesto. Pine nuts are expensive and understandably so – harvesting them involves an intensive two step process to remove the seeds from the pine cone (which involves heat) and then dehulling each little seed individually. Thought to have been a staple food in North America as long as 10,000 years ago, pine nuts provide more protein than other nuts and seeds. They are an great source of B vitamins, copper, iron, magnesium, molybdenum, potassium and zinc. The combination of nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, arginine (an amino acid) and monounsaturated fats indicate pine nuts are a heart protective
superfood. Those sensitive to pine tree pollen are at risk of an allergic reaction to pine nuts. Pistachio – Pistacia vera is a member of the cashew family which produces rich, slightly sweet, green nuts. Full of heart healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, pistachios are also a good provider of protein and fibre. They are an excellent source of B vitamins and vitamin e as well as the minerals calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, selenium and zinc. Like other nuts they are considered to have protective effects on the cardiovascular system. Pistachios also contain a compound which has potential anti-inflammatory actions and the Jordanian folk medicine of pistachios for treating jaundice has also been shown to have some bearing by modern research. Pistachios may cause contact dermatitis in some individuals. If you are allergic to mangoes and cashews, you should avoid pistachios. It is recommended that you source nuts and seeds from a reliable supplier (you’ll be hard pushed to beat sourcing from your local health food store, especially one who has in house packing facilities such as Ceres!) Nuts and seeds (especially peanuts) are prone to contamination, especially from fungi such as aspergillus which produces the poison aflatoxin – bird lovers will no doubt be familiar with this as good quality commercial bird feeds are aflatoxin tested. When seasonally available, nuts in
Little black dress from Great Plains. Local stockist Needful Things of Castle Cary
LOOKING GOOD & FEELING FINE shells are often preferred. Leave them in their shells until you eat them. For unshelled nuts and seeds, keep them refrigerated and use within 6 months. A lot of nutritionists and raw food fans like to soak nuts and seeds overnight in water to start the sprouting process. This disables some of the enzyme inhibitors present, allowing for better nutrient absorption. Nuts are high in the amino acid arginine and low in lysine. Arginine has some important health benefits but this high-to-low arginine-to-lysine ratio is not ideal for sufferers of cold sores/herpes infections. Arginine promotes this virus while lysine inhibits it. Nut allergy sufferers too should of course stay well clear of these foods. See you next month! Jenna Evans. Never dramatically change your diet without the guidance of a health professional, especially if you have an existing health issue. Ceres Natural Foods in Yeovil have a good selection of nuts and seeds and can help with any further queries you may have.

Say you saw it in The Visitor 34 THE VISITOR November 2012
Leisure Cycle-Babble OCTOBER brought the curtain down on the road cycling season in Europe with the one-day classic, Il Lombardia, otherwise known as the Tour of Lombardy. The race is one of the five biggest one-day races in the world, along with Milan-San Remo, ParisRoubaix, Tour of Flanders and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Together the five races are known as cycling's monuments. This years race was the 106th edition and was won by Joaquim Rodriquez in quite apocalyptic conditions, with only 54 of the 199 starters actually finishing the race. The 251km route from Bergamo to Lecco, took the riders over a series of tough climbs, the most famous of which, the Madonna del Ghisallo, came with just 45km to go. The climb passes a chapel dating from 1632 that has become a real place of pilgrimage for cyclists. Legend has it that in medieval times the Count of Ghisallo was travelling close to the chapel when he was set upon by bandits. His salvation came when he saw a vision of the Virgin Mary. He struggled free and ran towards the vision falling to his knees, praying for refuge. When he was saved from the outlaws news of the vision spread and the Madonna del Ghisallo became recognised locally as the patroness of travellers. Then, in the 1940s, a priest by the name of Father Ermilindo Vigano proposed that the Madonna del Ghisallo be declared the patroness of cyclists. The Pope agreed and so, in 1949, the Madonna del Ghisallo became the patroness of cyclists. Today the chapel is a shrine to cycling, accommodating memorabilia from legendary riders such as Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali. Inside, a flame lit by Pope Pius XII in 1949, burns eternally in memory of cyclists whose lives have been lost. Every Feast of All Souls and Christmas Eve special services are held in remembrance. As one would expect a race that has been run for over a century the Tour of Lombardy has its fair share of great stories to tell. The list of its winners includes some of the most
famous names ever to climb onto a racing bike, including Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault. But the record for most wins belongs to none other than the great Fausto Coppi, who triumphed in the race no fewer than five times. Despite Coppi's dominance, one of the race's most thrilling stories comes from the very first edition, held in 1905. It was won by an Italian rider called Giovanni Gerbi in a rather devious manner. Gerbi, already a national champion on the track and a winner in Milan-Turin, was out researching the route of the new race a few days before the start and came across a junction in the town of Crema. The junction crossed some rail tracks and the wily Italian realised it offered him an opportunity. Gerbi quickly understood that to cross the junction the riders would have to dismount. That is unless they had some alternative method of crossing the rails. Like, for example, a ramp made of dried mud. Come race day, approaching the junction Gerbi went to the head of the field and led the bunch into the junction. Then, at the last minute, he veered to one side, riding up and over the ramp he had built two days earlier. Behind there was carnage as confused riders tried to follow, only to come to grief. By the time they had all picked themselves up to continue, Gerbi was nothing more than a speck on the horizon. He went on to win easily. The Tour of Lombardy had secured itself a spot in cycling's rich history at its very first attempt. Today, its interesting route, exciting history and the fact that it takes place at a time of year when northern Italy is arguably at its most picturesque, with the trees around Lake Como blazing a golden trail, ensures it is one of cycling's most eagerly awaited races. And it has the most poetic of nicknames. Paris-Roubaix may be known as the Queen of the Classics, Liege-Bastogne-Liege as La Doyenne (or the old lady), but neither comes close to the ‘race of the falling leaves’ for sheer romanticism. Giles Belbin.

BEER & SKITTLES P. A. BAXTER
BARELY HAD the last Visitor Magazine hit the shelves when I leaned that the information given to all you lovely people out there in Viz land was out of date, as news reached me that another brewery was up and running in Somerset. We have to add Kevin Jones and his Stocklinch Brewery to our previous total of 21. The information about this venture came to me via a friend who takes a newspaper local to the Ilminster area. It doesn’t take a genius to realize that Kevin is passionate about his craft – so good to see in this age where so many occupations are treated with a perfunctory attitude. Kevin already supplies some award winning pubs with his ales, including some pubs that too, have won awards, including The Digby Tap in Sherborne and The
Halfway House at Pitney (on the Somerton to Langport road). Having had a little chat with him, and being invited to inspect his premises, I am to say the least more than a little excited! Recently I had to meet up with a colleague in Dorchester and we decided to visit the branch of Wetherspoons for our lunch. Apart from the huge ghastly flat screen televisions (on mute, but with subtitles) showing Sky news continually, I find this branch of Mr. Martin’s finest quite accommodating, more so than many we have visited, certainly. It was very crowded, although we were able to quite quickly get a table and the food was not long in coming. Some of the lunch-time meal-deals are, to say the least, staggeringly good value. Being completely unadventurous, we both opted for the ham egg and chips option, (Wiltshire ham and free-range eggs, don’t you know!) Two meals together for £5.99. Beat that! Clearly it is near enough impossible for any pub that is tied in with a brewery or pub company to be able to compete on a level playing field, and even any independent pub owned by the landlord, would struggle. Furthermore, we had a pint each of the Dorset Brewing Company ale Harbour Master at £2.49/pint, and being a CAMRA member, I received a further 50p off my pint using a token given to us for use in the Wetherspoons chain. Yes, two meals and two pints for under tenand-a-half quid! On our last visit to Dorchester we went to a pub-co owned establishment, and the bill
Vinny dresses the part for the speciality evening at The Lime Tree, Thornford
came to over £30, although there was quite a lot more on the plate. What we were served at Wetherspoons was sufficient and the beer excellent. This Harbour Master is a mere 3.6%ABV, which we chose against the higher gravity beers available as we both had to drive later that afternoon, although we both felt that we could have stayed there until closing time and downed another three or four pints. Checking the Good Beer Guide, I have to say I disagree with the reviewer of this particular beer who considered there was a citrus finish, we didn’t think there was (and anyway I’m fed up with citrusy flavour in beers). We felt the beautiful full malty flavour was most impressive. I think I could safely say it has all the ingredients that one would expect from really good ale. So impressed was I that I got in touch with the brewery on returning home to congratulate the brewery on the quality. Clearly their head brewer is another with a passion for their craft. I spoke to the charming Sophie, who, amongst other things told me that they were able to deliver directly to the Dorchester establishment, rather than the ale having to go to some central depot before being moved on. I have heard from those in the know that this could be some while, and some beers just don’t travel as well as others. Personally, I believe that being taken to a depot, left to rest and settle, and then perhaps have this done all over again could be the thing that ruins the ale. What do you landlords and landladies think? Our Editor recently got in touch with some information regarding a new web-site being put together that is recording all the pubs and beer houses that have ever existed in Yeovil. I got in touch with the web-master, one Bob Osborn, who has spent some considerable time researching and posting the information up for us all to see,
and it is quite incredible to see just how many pubs Yeovil has had, particularly when the population was only a mere fraction of what it is now. This site is highly recommended by your scribe, and I’m sure Mr. Osborn would be delighted if any of you have any further information regarding this fascinating bit of social history. It’s not difficult to find on the ‘net, just Google ‘Yeovil pubs’ and all becomes apparent. I’m sure it hasn’t been missed by my loyal following that there has been a not inconsiderable amount of advertising of certain ginger beers on the haunted fishtank of late. The ad for Crabbies Alcoholic Ginger Beer we thought the most noticeable and amusing, it being in some sort of spoof 1950’s manner. The better half decided she would like to try it, which led to us both sampling a few others as well. I must say I thought that Crabbies was rather good, as was Frederic’s Great British Alcoholic Ginger Beer from Robinson’s of Stockport. We also liked Jeremiah Weed’s Root Beer;
available in ‘Bold Taste’ or ‘Sour’ (we preferred the former, but both have their merits) and interestingly this is available in a number of pubs. The Robinsons was a bit of a surprise, and perhaps now they are expanding their range, as on our last visit to the North we realized that this brewer was known for its cheap beer – and basic pubs. The only establishment we have been able to obtain this so far is from the fantastic range at Dikes the independent supermarket in
Stalbridge. What is ‘root beer’ you ask? Well originally it was a beer flavoured by the root or bark of the sassafras plant and came in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic form. It’s still very popular in America and every state produces many different types with additional flavouring from a whole mass of different ingredients from vanilla to honey, cloves to molasses! The sassafras is now made artificially as there are concerns that the ‘real’ thing is carcinogenic. Incidentally, despite

They Say That shares in the Orange Mobile Network drastically fell Wednesday 10th October, when Ian ‘Ike’ Goldsmith of Yeovil forgot to take his mobile phone to work!! That Ron Young of Yeovil Marsh is hoping for a SatNav for Christmas, according to the ‘Heavy Mob’. That if birthday boy John Hamblin of Yeovil ‘Can’t get no satisfaction’ furniture restoring, he has enough Rolling Stones memorabilia to make his fortune on ebay. That Simon Beard of Sherborne’s Godden and Curtis has an unorthodox way of celebrating his birhday this month. That anyone visiting Scenes of Gillingham should take their ear plugs with them as Phillip has recently purchased a new shirt - which is rather loud but very jolly! That Wincanton’s Di Clegg might be doing B & B ‘temporarily’. That keepers at Longleat Safari Park are requesting socks this Christmas - pairs or singles - in an attempt to offer their colony of chipmonks cosy sleeping quarters this winter. That Mark Schatomski celebrated his own diamond milestone in London during September. That Pete and Ang’ of Sexey’s School in Bruton are replacing Ben and Kate on badger watch. That when it comes to upholstery, Pipers of Sparkford have ‘gone up’ in the world and are ‘flying high!’ That Norman Foster of Evercreech enjoys going for a meal, but only if it’s eating fish and chips out of the paper ... with a glass of wine. That when Fred Bailey of Chiselborough went to lunch he found, upon his return, that his ‘Shetland Pony’ had miraculously left him a present for his roses. That Tony Pugsley of Wincanton likes books by ‘J.P. Freeleigh’. John Richards of Lamyatt has a favourite song - ‘Three wheels on my wagon’. 168 Hendford Hill YEoViL “Why don't we take off all alone Take a trip somewhere far, far away We'll be together all alone again Like we used to in the early days” FIRST PERSON to tell me the above song gets a free drink. Last month Jo Field correctly guessed that it was ‘haitian Divorce’ by Steely Dan . Hello gang, wassup with the weather? Can’t seem to make its mind up can it? It’s not very often that I say this but it’s been a bit quiet up here at the top of the hill. We had a couple of parties and a couple of really good bands on, but I think we are all starting to think about Christmas and starting to pull the horns in a bit which is a shame ‘coz there is usually something pretty good going on here at The Quick. One thing we have got right again is our cask ale. The Quicksilver Mail is the only pub in Yeovil to make it into next year’s Good Beer Guide that’s 4 years on the trot so we are quite proud of ourselves. Next month we have a veritable feast of music. On the 2nd of November the Producers are live in the function room. On the 9th r.E.m. UK the band formally known as StiPE will be here with a fantastic tribute show. At the same time Paul Smith will be live in the bar - so lots going on that night. On the 23rd we have the Fat marrow Blues Band and on Saturday 24th the former front man of hayseed Dixie, John Wheeler will be bringing his one man show to The Quicksilver. And on the last Friday of the month hell’s Bells will be live in the function room. Last month I dropped my phone and cracked the screen. I went to the ‘Main Dealers’ and after being told it would have to be sent away for up to 28 days I took it along to Face It in Princes Street where I left it for ONE HOuR. Went back to collect it, good as new! Best phone fixers I have ever seen, check em out! And someone else who deserves an honorable mention is the Party Goldmine in Wyndham Street. They decked out our function room for a recent party and the place looked fabulous! This month we said goodbye to a chap I went to school with. mark Gullis fought a long and courageous battle with motor Neuron Disease. It finally ended when Mark went to sleep earlier this month. His funeral was just as he had planned it even down to the Pink Floyd music which he loved so much. Mark was 52. r.i.P. my friend. The Christmas bookings are coming in thick and fast, so if you would like to come and join us over the festive season hurry up and ring me . The menu is available on our website www.quicksilvermail.com Oh by the way New year’s Eve this year we have StOrm live in the function room. Get yourself booked in or you will have a pants new year party! And finally, Eric Bristow came into the pub the other day and said “Why did you put super Glue on my darts?” I said “You just can’t let it go can you?” tOOt tOOt!!!

the very American looking label on the bottle, the beer is made at Park Royal, London. One other we have tried is by Magners, but this is labeled as ‘Pear and Ginger’. Being a family that likes this combination (chopped pear, finely chopped stem ginger plus lashings of plain yogurt – a perfect Sunday tea treat!) we felt we had to sample this one. To say the Magner’s was a disappointment is an understatement. Thin, uninteresting and so pale to almost look like water. She who must be obeyed reckoned that it looked more like lime juice with lemonade – minus any taste! We won’t be sampling that again thankyou … Reading back through this month’s offerings, and mulling over the various activities shared with you good people, do you feel
that going to a big national like Wetherspoons to drink is fair on the owners of small independent pubs? Should we splash the cash with those who lease their pubs from the pubcos? Should we spend our hard-earned wampum at the latter type even though we have to pay sometimes considerably more? If we don’t then sure as eggs are eggs more and more of the ‘locals’ are going to be added to the endangered list. The choice is ours.

Wine & Dine British Sausage Week 5th - 11th November
Sausages have been around for a very long time, some say 5000 years! In medieval times most peasant familes kept only one or two pigs at a time and when one was slaughtered the offal was eaten straight away or made into sausages, whilst the rest was salted for ham or bacon. Without the convenience of a fridge or freezer the curing of sausages and bacon was very important. At pig-killing time, the carcass was salted and hung up to smoke. The blood and fat were pounded together sometimes with a little of the meat from the underside of the animal. This mixture was then flavoured with herbs and spices and packed into its own wellcleaned gut and cut into convenient lengths. Smoking helped the sausage to keep longer, and gave both sausage and bacon a tasty flavour. Today, the mixture of minced seasoned meat is funnelled into a tubelike casing consisting of either pig’s or sheep’s intestine. Alternatively, the casing may consist of synthetic material. If you ask anyone to name a typically British meal Bangers & Mash will invariably be up there with Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding and Fish & Chips. Sausages are popular with all members of the family as
there are so many different varieties and flavours to choose from. There is thought to be over 470 recipes and flavours in the UK with plain pork being the ones most often purchased by consumers. Other favourites include herby Lincolnshire (pork, bread and sage); Yorkshire (pork, pepper, mace, nutmeg and cayenne); Cumberland (pork, a variety of herbs and spices, made into a continuous spiral and traditionally sold by length rather than weight); and finally West Country (pork, with added cider or scumpy and flavoured with sage). Visit your local family butcher to see what he has to offer. You’ll probably find varieties such as pork and leek and pork and caramelised onion, my particular favourites, amongst others. By the way, the nickname of ‘bangers’ for sausages originated from the Second World War when the high water content turned to steam during cooking and tended to make them explode! Make sure you order your speciality ‘bangers’ for Bonfire Night.

British Gas, Npower and SSE have all confirmed steep energy price increases for this winter
Npower has become the third of the so-called 'big six' energy firms to confirm big rises in its gas and electricity bills ahead of winter. Bills will increase by an
average 8.8% for gas and 9.1% for electricity from November 26th, the company said, just hours after British Gas confirmed its average dual fuel tariff would rise by 6% - or £80 annually from November 16th. Npower's 6.5 million residential
customers will have to endure their steeper increases 10 days later. Both companies blamed rising costs largely outside their control. Rival SSE increased its tariffs by 9% on average from Monday 15th October. Of the other 'big six' firms only

Ann Robinson, director of consumer policy at uSwitch, said the increase would leave many households facing a winter where they are ‘scared to turn on heating for fear of the cost.’ Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said: ‘With winter approaching, low-waged people will now be terrified.’ Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker said that this winter's Energy Bill will be the biggest shake-up of the industry since privatisation and give extra teeth for regulator

This is the biggest ever energy efficiency programme, that will help millions improve their homes so they are better insulated. We have also brought in the Warm Home Discount, which will provide an extra £130 for two million of the most vulnerable households this winter.’

GARDENING GARDENING MONtHly by Richard Cumming Orchard Park leaf it out!
Ohh my aching back! And arms! Leaf raking is here again. But isn't nature wonderful? She produces the most wonderful colours to brighten the autumn and help us forget the rather disappointing summer, then when we're done with the display, delivers bag loads of potential compost right to the door. Potential is the key word as there is just a bit of work involved to achieve the goal of nice dark crumbly compost that will enrich the soil and produce fantastic crops next year (if you are an ace composter) or the year after (if you're not quite so hot!) The more cynical amongst you will know of course that I do sell bags (and bags - price on application!) of beautiful readymade garden compost derived from farmyard manure (FyM) or from recycled green waste which is the same stuff as we can get from our own gardens. The secret of all this is the process by which organic matter changes from fresh to compost. Tough leaves need to be chopped, broken down and mixed with some more sappy stuff, the easy way for leaves on the lawn is to get the mower out! That mix of chopped leaves and grass clippings is absolutely ideal for a quick starting compost heap which will heat up within days. Fallen leaves are magical for all of us from the smallest child to

Bonfire night is surely so much a part of our heritage that it cannot be ignored and a blazing bonfire reflects the glory of autumn as well as the chance to start the end of year clear-up. All trees require some support and protection such as stakes, tree ties and tree guards. Harvest is done, so time in the garden is spent tidying before the winter and planting while the soil is still warm. Almost any plant that is hardy can be planted now and will have the advantage over spring planted specimens when the spring arrives. Roots can establish over winter to give a flying start while the spring and summer planted ones will have to work harder to maintain their top growth and get roots going at the same time. Sometimes the effort is just to much and the plant collapses, so if you can plan it and plant it this autumn you'll be ahead of the game! Winter colour in pots is not hard; pansies and violas are so reliable, under-planted with spring flowering bulbs and coupled with hardy cyclamen will give pleasure for ages. Severe
frosts will spoil flowers but the plants will survive. If pots contain tender plants then they should be moved to a sheltered spot, raised on pot feet or flat stones to allow the pot to drain, and possibly wrapped with bubble wrap or fleece to protect the roots from freezing. In the veg garden there are always jobs to be done. Planting garlic, over-wintering onions and shallots (gets an advantage with an earlier crop next year) sowing broad beans, the variety Aquadulce is the one to choose) and winter lettuce under the protection of cloche or greenhouse. There are several crops that might be still in the ground; at home we have parsnips, celeriac, carrots, leeks, parsley, Jerusalem artichokes, winter cabbage, curly kale, purple sprouting, black kale. Being reasonable it is unlikely that any of us will be anywhere near selfsufficient in fruit and veg over winter especially when like us

you have bank voles eating the shoulders off your carrots. In a case like that all you can do is eat them before winter sets in, the carrots that is, not the voles. Perennial borders can look a bit ragged, and overgrown clumps can be lifted, split and replanted. This is very important especially for those varieties where the clump has grown outwards
leaving a dead centre. The result is a much improved - rejuvenated plant next year. Lift any really tender items, and cover lightly tender Lobelia and Penstemons with a dry mulch. [This could be a layer of straw, leaf mould, peat or bark]. Dahlias should be lifted, once their tops are blackened by frost, cut them back to 6" and knock

GARDENING off the soil. Leave them upside down, for about a week to dry out, then dust with sulphur powder and store set out in shallow boxes with the tubers just covered by moist peat, bark, vermiculite - in cold but frost-free conditions. This could be in a green house or garage, or an unheated spare room. The keener gardeners will have already sown sweet peas in pots to get an early start. It's the only
way if you want sweet peas to pick in early summer. Overwinter the plants in a cold frame - and check regularly for mice and slug damage. Bulbs can still be planted, especially tulips, which can suffer if planted too early. There should still be a good choice of different types in most garden centres. Smaller bulbs added to winter hanging baskets help make them more interesting.
Brighten up your winter with some colourful plants.
the end bit... PAPERCHASE
NO DOUBT you’ve read about the Government’s mishandling of the process for reletting the Intercity West Coast rail franchise. The incumbent train operating company, Virgin Group, threatened legal action after the new franchise was awarded to First Group, and whilst preparing to defend its decision the Government discovered flaws in its method of comparing the financial bids. It ended up cancelling the award, negotiating with Virgin to continue to provide services for a further 13 months at least, and delaying the renewal of other franchises including the Great Western franchise which includes the London to Bristol and Cardiff services. I mention this because delaying the award of the new Great Western franchise, which was due to be announced next March and operational for 15 years from 21st July 2013, could have severe repercussions for the West of England. Major rail infrastructure projects designed to boost the region’s economy are likely to be affected, with a knock-
on effect on other investment in the region. At this point I should add that Bristol is also served by a separate Cross Country franchise which operates the services from the South West to Birmingham, the North East and Scotland. The Western Daily Press picked up the story in its 16th October issue, under the headline ‘Rail fiasco delays West investment’, and provided a timely report of the local concerns and the recently-appointed transport secretary’s attempts to find a way out of the mess he has been landed with. To illustrate it the picture editor selected a photo of an intercity train at Bristol, and ran it large, really large, more than 20cms deep across three columns. Sadly someone spoilt it all with the caption: ‘Virgin Cross Country trains will continue to call at Bristol Temple Meads while the franchise fiasco is resolved’. Oh no they won’t! Virgin trains haven’t called at Temple Meads for years. Virgin lost the Cross Country franchise when it was retendered way back in 2007 and for the past five years it has been operated by an Arriva Group company called, appropriately, CrossCountry. A good sub-editor tries to keep abreast of local changes and checks the facts before committing them to print. Evidently this sub-editor doesn’t. As American editor Erwin Knoll once said: ‘Everything you read in the newspapers is absolutely true, except for that rare story of which you happen to have first-

hand knowledge.’ Talking of fiascos, recent weeks have exposed yet again the chaos that apparently reigns at the Western Daily Press. On page 47 of the West Country Life supplement in the 1st September issue no fewer than 20 clues were omitted from the cryptic crossword, leaving a large chunk of white space half way down the page. An apology in the following Saturday’s supplement gave neither an indication of how it happened nor the missing clues that would have enabled readers to complete the puzzle. Instead it simply said ‘we appreciate the popularity of our puzzles and will endeavour to ensure the error does not happen again’. The endeavour proved to be inadequate. The puzzles on page 30 of the 29th September seemed vaguely familiar, and so they were. The entire page was a reprint of page 28 of the 22nd September issue, identical in every respect apart from the pagination and dateline. Again the explanation, in the 1st October issue, was not very forthcoming: ‘On Saturday the Western Daily Press ran the wrong puzzles page. The correct Saturday page is printed here. Monday’s puzzles can be found on page 26.’ It’s all a puzzle to me. Word reached me recently that the publishers of the Blackmore

The retired White Rabbit, Big Chief Ronny, and his squaw Ruth, are now fully-fledged Indians after visiting the Country & Western Fortnight at Brean Sands. I have to admit to being a little premature when I was singing the praises of Gary Johnson’s yeovil Town’s start to the season. After unwittingly putting the kiss of death on the team they lost their next six matches. The fans remain optimistic, nevertheless. When Graham, the Sideways Walking Crab walked into his local recently he asked the landlord for a ‘pint of less’. ‘We don’t sell that one’ replied the chap behind the bar ‘where do you get that drink from?’ Graham replied ‘my doctor recommended it, he told me I should drink less’.
