Students should show for celebrations April 22 Well, the test of students' participation in their university's growth rides on the April 22 "Run for Excellence." Here, 22 mini-celebrations will take place across the university, culminating into one huge gathering at Thatcher Lake to continue celebrating the beginning of $52 million worth of face lifts and new learning areas for the students.

As students can now see, this plan is well into gear with construction people driving heavy machinery and earth movers digging and leveling grounds on the east side of the campus.

Most of what people are now witnessing are near-future parking places.

First the monies.

Administrators are calling this a Master Plan and appropriately so. University of Central Oklahoma president, George Nigh, took a unique approach to fund this plan. Through the sale of revenue bonds, he provided the money to give UCO a better site for learning, which the state could never afford. For those who think their tuition and fees solely fund salaries, upkeep and new buildings for UCO are two-thirds wrong.

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education is allotted taxpayer' s money annually from the legislature. They then distribute these dollars to the colleges and universities where 66 cents out of each dollar spent by the university comes out of the taxpayers' pockets to run these schools.

Now, the celebration itself and the test of who cares.

This event is being held on the Land Run's anniversary and appropriately so. Like the run, buildings and improvements will rise. And in the spirit of the event, Edmond grade schoolers will whoop it up as they race their covered wagons up the hill at the lake. A barbecue lunch open to anyone is also offered. The open lunch is enough cause for most students to rejoice. B ut hopefully, a large number of people will revel by knowing in two years the campus will never be the same again.

Faculty are asked to dress in pioneer or western wear during the week of the event and they'd better. They'll be here longer than most students. Nigh is probably correct in assuming this construction will make education more pleasurable and draw additional students. "Build it and they will come," Nigh says.

At 11:38 a.m. (for some reason) April 22 the students, faculty, staff and others will gather at 20-plus locations across the campus targeted for construction, whooping and hollering simultaneously with ribbons cut and shovels in the dirt. Tune to the campus radio station, KCSC, for timing purposes.

If you're a taxpayer, this university is yours. Celebrate its new beginning or get left in the past.

Student senator encourages involvement ould the author of the Vista editorial for April 5 like an answer to the age-old question regarding a student directory, "Isn't this what SGA does?"

For the record, I personally began a letter-writing campaign to network all Oklahoma colleges and universities about their administrative policy regarding publication of a campus-wide student directory. I have since received a few responses, which means my research has just

begun.

I have to say that it is very interesting that a Vista reporter attends every senate meeting (Mondays, 12:40 p.m. University Senate Room), but there is never any coverage of the body's actions and plans.

Why doesn't the Vista actually approach a senator and ask the loaded question, "What's going on ?" And, if these reporters of the future actually do any SGA research, why is it not published? Unfortunately, I am compelled to ask, "Isn't this what

I cannot speak for my fellow S GA members, butthis senator does appreciate what Vista coverage we do get. Thank you for your time and Vista space.

McCurdy proposes welfare reform plan Muskogee Daily Phoenix on Rep. McCurdy's plan: 'age is exactly what Oklahoma Congressman Dave McCurdy is proposing to rescue America's faltering welfare system. McCurdy is leading a group of conservative and moderate Democrats who are advancing a welfare reform plan to be financed by cuts in services provided to resident non-citizens ...

Additional monies to finance the reforms would come from the approximately $21.3 billion that would be saved over five years through cuts in services to legal immigrants.

That is the essence of triage — employing limited resources at points where they will do the most good. McCurdy and his group have stepped up and said doing more to end the cycle of welfare dependency is more valuable to society

than aiding non-citizens. The United States is no longer the land of milk and honey that so many immigrants believe it is. If it were, welfare reform could be financed without cuts in other programs. But, the current economic and budget realities require hard choices.

McCurdy's plan makes those choices in the most equitable manner available.

Weekend retreat mixes English with fun, storytelling

Guest Writer The smoke curls upward from the campfire as tall tales are woven in the cool April nights.

A huge amount of fun, says Dr. Allen Rice, assistant professor of English at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Very pleasureable, says Dr. Amy Carrell, assistant professor of English at UCO. A more creative, inventive way for students and teachers to interact, says Dr. Pam Pittman, a UCO English instructor.

Once a semester, UCO's English department sponsors a weekend retreat.

Four professors and a couple of dozen UCO students will trek south to Deer Creek near Turner Falls April 15-17 to spend time together learning, telling stories and "getting really, really silly," said Rice.

English Society students pick the professors that go on the trip.

"It's getting so popular, profes-

sors say 'Can I do it this time?" said Rice.

The group leaves Friday late afternoon. That evening is spent around a fire getting to know each other and eating.

Dr. Kurt Hockenaur, an English professor, kicks off the Saturday sessions with his much-requested presentation on beat poetry.

"A huge hit—hilariously funny," said Rice of Hockenauer' s beat poetry talk.

The travel literature genre and writing autobiographies will be covered by Pittman. Students will be encouraged to keep their own travel journal of their experiences on the retreat.

"It's not funny," insisted humorologist Carrell of her presentation on humor.

"We'll probably analyze some jokes," says Carrell. "Nothing is inherently funny until the audience says it is."

Carrell added that you can't make suppositions about your audience.

"In the days of political correctness, lots of jokes don't get told,"she said.

Saturday evening, another campfire is built and the group typically sings and tell stories.

"Last time we were singing the theme from "Gilligan's Island" and lots of other silly

things," said Rice.

Carrell's reputation as a gourmet cook landed her the chef role on the trip.

"We'llprobably make our own fajitas Saturday. I think we may have to do something with marshmallows," she said.

Sunday morning is a time to pack up, clean up and take off for home.

The idea for the retreat was brought here three years ago by Rice when he joined UCO from Oklahoma B aptist University. The first year there were eight or nine students he said. Since then the retreat has grown to about 20 students.

"It's the kind of stuff you don't get in the classroom," said Rice.

"It's not just a formal class. You get to see the professors as people."

"We learn as much as the students. I come home full of ideas to do and try," Pittman said.

It is necessary to be a UCO student to go on the trip, but not necessarily an English student says Rice. The trip costs $25, including food and lodging if reservations are made with the English department by April 12. After that, a late fee will be assessed.

Students are requested to bring a sleeping bag or cot and a pillow.

Nigh, officials celebrate sister city agreement in Puebla, Mexico

Staff Writer University of Central Oklahoma officials and President George Nigh visited UCO' s sister university in Puebla, Mexico during spring break to celebrate an agreement between the schools.

"The purpose was to see and determine the degree of interest in having student and faculty exchange," said Don Paulsen, executive-in-residence at the Nigh Institute and former Secretary of Commerce for Oklahoma.

Nigh and the president of the Universidad Popular Autonomal Del Estado De Puebla (Autonomous University of Puebla) reenacted the signing of the "Agree-

mentfor Reciprocal Exchange and Cooperation in Academic Research and Cultural Activities," which was signed into effect Dec. 12, 1993.

The university officials and Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick spent two days in Mexico City where they attended a reception at the U.S. Embassy, Paulsen said.

Norick and the mayor of Puebla also reenacted the signing of the sister city agreement, he said.

"They (Nigh and Norick) reenacted the signing to show their support," he said.

The regents wanted UCO to become more involved globally and locally (Oklahoma City). UCO is now considered an urban univer-

sity rather than a regular education college, Nigh said.

Nigh and Carl Reherman, director of the Nigh Institute, spoke to a political science class at the Autonomous University of Puebla.

Nigh told the students about Oklahoma government, and Reherman discussed the U.S. Constitution, Paulsen said.

The administrators saw art shows and music groups that they would like to bring to UCO as part of the exchange program, Paulsen said.

"We learned more about the university and the faculty," he said.

Dr. Paula Smith, associate professor of economics at UCO, is currently on sabbatical in Puebla and met with UCO officials, he said.

"She is the best ambassador for the university and Oklahoma," Paulsen said.

The faculty and students spoke very highly of Smith, almost to the point of embarrassing her, he said.

One highlight of the trip was the visit of the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Oklahoman Jim Jones. It was the first time the ambassador, possibly the most important foreigner, had traveled to Puebla, he said.

The assassination of Mexico's leading presidential candidate put a damper on the trip, Paulsen said.

"They're very sensitive about how we feel about the Indian uprising down there," he said.

Although the assassination brought back memories of the death of Bobby Kennedy 25 years ago, the trip was not adversely effected. The group still accomplished their mission of following through on the cultural exchange agreement, Paulsen said.

The group also consisted of Paulsen, Dr. Clyde Jacob, vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Ron Padlock, director of International Student Services, Dr. Donna Guinn, Student Advisement and Linda Jones, communications, publications director.

UCO to host arts festival for high school students Jeff Billington

Student Writer The University of Central Oklahoma will host the High School Arts Festival April 8 in the University Center and in the Art and Industrial Arts Building.

Dr. William Hommel, department chairman for visual arts and design, will serve alongside faculty graduate students and professional artists as evaluators and presenters of the festival.

"The purpose of the High School Arts Festival is to pro-

vide a day of enrichment activities for students in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades. Students will have the opportunity to become involved in demonstrations and presentations, as well as actively participate in special drawing activities held in the art department," said Hommel.

Students and high school teachers statewide have been invited by the university to enter their student's art, said Hommel.

The festival has been divided into eight divisions, and schools can enter up to 15 pieces per division.

Safe school seminars to feature experts on youths

Staff Writer The University of Central Oklahoma and EdmondPublic Schools will host a series of safe school seminars from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

April 7, April 21 and May 5 in the Communications Annex, Room 1.

The seminars will include "Rec-

ognizing and Assisting High Risk Students," on April 7, "How to Prevent Weapons and Violence in our Schools" on April 21 and "Gang Intervention and Prevention for Schools and Communities" on May 5.

Experts in the field from across the nation are scheduled to speak at these seminars.

The April 7 seminar will include noted speakers such as Dave Capuzzi, Ph.D. NCC. Capuzzi is past president of the American Association for Counseling and Development and professor of counselor education at Portland State University in Portland, Ore. He is the co-editor of the book "Youth At Risk" with Douglas R. Gross, Ph.D., coordinator of the counseling program at Arizona

State University.

The topic they will discuss is

"Targeting At-Rsk Youtk" The April 21 seminar will include George Butterfield who is a noted expert on school safety from the National School Safety Center in Westlake Village, Calif.

Butterfield will speak on "Weapons in Our Schools: Examining the Problem."

Alex Rascon Jr., chief of police of the San Diego Unified School District Police Department, also will speak at this seminar. He will speak on the topic "Making Schools Safer."

Walter B. Miller, Ph.D., will be one of the speakers at the final seminar. He is a nationally recognized expert on gangs and gang activity. Miller is an independent consultant for the U.S. Department ofJu stice and retired Harvard University professor.

Other speakers for the three seminars include Hugh Vasquez, MSW; Gwen Olitsky, MS; Jay Shaffer; Ruth Harris Terrell, MSW; Linda Schmidt; Michael Walker and Alan R. Brown, Ph.D. "We have such an active com-

munity here in Edmond that we felt like this was the type of seminar that everyone could benefit from," said Lynda Earls, administrative assistant at the Nigh Institute of State Government.

"Edmond has always been very good about confronting issues that affect its youth," she said, "and we thought this would give concerned citizens a chance to come together and do something about these problems."

The seminars are hosted by the National TeleLearning Network.

This is the first time for UCO to hold this type of seminar, she said.

Earls said close to 30 people are expected to attend, though accommodations are up to 50.

Registration is on a first-come, first serve basis. Registration fee is $30, which includes registration for all three seminars, a brown bag lunch and any materials distributed, said Earls.

'GQ' publishes short story written by Artist-in-Residence Dr. Edward Allen "A Lover's Guide to Hospitals" is the title of a short story by University of Central Oklahoma Artist-in-Residence Dr. Edward Allen which appears in the April issue of "GQ" magazine.

"It all takes place in a hospital," Allen said of his story's premise.

"It's the thoughts of a person who is being administered to by a nurse

who is a former flame."

"A Lover's Guide to Hospitals" is the third story of Allen's to be printed in GQ. He also has had four other short stories printed in magazines like "The New Yorker."

"Straight Through The Night," which looks at the wholesale meat business, and "Mustang Sally,"

which Allen describes as "a '90s academic sex comedy," are two novels he has written.

Allen will read "A Lover's Guide to Hospitals" at 7:30 p.m.

April 11 in Room 405 of the University Center.

The event is open to the public.

Teacher job fair to be held today

Staff Writer The Career Development and Placement Services is sponsoring the University of Central Oklahoma Teacher Job Fair today in the University Center Ballroom.

The fair will consist of schools from Oklahoma, Arizona, Kansas, Texas and Nevada.

"We have the state's largest College of Education. The teacher job fair is a chance to showcase our students to the people who actually do the hiring in the various school dis-

tricts," said Dr. Kathryn E. Greenlee, director of Career Development and Placement Services at UCO. Greenlee said this year' s job fair will be different. In addition to being able to speak with the representatives from the schools and pick up brochures, the student will be able to speak to the representatives one-onone in prearranged appointments.

No extra security for Dead concert MIAMI (Al!) — Miami police plan no extra security for three Grateful Dead shows this week, despite a melee at a Dead concert in Orlando that forced officers to use tear gas and pepper gas.

"We have many, many shows that come through here without any trouble in the course of the year, and I don't think this will be any different," police spokesman Angelo Bitsis said Tuesday. "We don't anticipate any trouble."

On Monday, hundreds of people, some throwing rocks and bottles, tried to push their way into the Dead's sold-out show in Orlando, rushing past barricades and pressing against the Orlando Arena's glass doors.

No one was seriously injured and no arrests were made.

There were no problems inside the 15,000-seat arena.

The Dead has scheduled shows Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in Miami.

Safety commission recalls crayons WASHINGTON (AP) — The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 11 brands of crayons imported from China — including one brand sold by the Toys 'R' Us chain — because they contain lead.

"Throw these crayons in the trash or take them back to the store for a refund," said Ann Brown, chairman of the commission.

CPSC said three of the brands "contain enough lead to present a lead poisoning hazard to young children who might eat or chew on the crayons."

They are "121 Jumbo Crayons," distributed by Concord Enterprises of Los Angeles; "Safe 48 Non-Toxic I'm a Toys 'R' Us Kid! Crayons," distributed by that firm; and "12 Crayons, glory" and "18 Crayons That Paint," distributed by Glory Stationery Manufacturing Co, Ltd, Los Angeles.

The latter crayons also include the legend "Conforms ASTM D-4236" the CSPC said which is supposed to be an indication that the formula has been reviewed by a toxicologist.

Widow denies husband's last wish EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A man's dying wish to have a volume of his poetry bound in his own skin will not be fulfilled.

In a settlement announced Monday, Donal. Eugene Russell's widow dropped her bid to carry out dip terms of his will.

The poet and operator of a fly-tying shop for fishermen had asked that his body be skinned and his hide tanned for use in covering a book of his verse.

But the Oregon State Mortuary and Cemetery Board went to court, arguing that Russell's desire would violate state laws regarding abuse of a corpse.

Russell's widow, Rachel Barton-Russell, said she will have him cremated instead.

Russell died Feb. 3 at 62. His widow has kept the body in a friend's freezer.

"He was very fond of his skin. He felt like it was one of his better attributes," said Barton-Russell, a 33-year-old law student.

Workers mistake poison for liquor MOSCOW (AP) — Maintenance workers who thought a poisonous liquid was liquor took 80 gallons of it home, and 20 people who drank it died.

Forty-four people were hospitalized in serious condition after drinking methanol, a colorless liquid used as fuel, a solvent and antifreeze.

The railway tank was marked "Caution: Poison," but the vodka-like smell of the methanol misled the workers, who poured it into jars and canisters, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported Monday.

Local police had recovered about 50 gallons of the methanol, but feared the remainder may be sold as drinking alcohol.

Student liaison resigns to join congressional campaign

By Roy Howe Staff Writer Peter Regan, liaison to students in the President's Office, resigned his position last week to help a candidate secure a congressional seat. Regan will help with all aspects of the campaign.

Regan will graduate this semester with a master's in political science in urban affairs.

Politics and its grip on people's lives attracted Regan.

"I love people and politics," he said. "Whether people realize it or not, it affects us all in our daily lives. As someone said, 'It's an evil necessity.'"

Regan has worked with University of Central Oklahoma president, George Nigh, since Nigh began at the top position during July of 1992. Regan said his education at the university means a lot.

"I feel comfortable that I received a very solid, formal education as well as an informal education at UCO," he said. "We get a lot of the big-college recognition, while at the same you receive personal attention seen at smaller

colleges.

"Regardless of where I may be going, I will carry with me the education I received and the friends I've met."

Regan said working next to a former two-time governor proved to be an invaluable learning tool

for his field of study and it formed a great friendship.

"President Nigh has served, not only as my mentor, but also my father figure," Regan said. "He has instilled in me the value of a strong work ethic combined with honesty and integrity."

Wildcats no match for Bronchos

UCO's 4 victories extend record to 24-5

The Abilene Christian University Wildcats, defending Lone Star Conference champs, entered Broncho stadium Friday and Saturday and were promptly handed four straight defeats at the hands of the 12th ranked Bronchos, losing 12-8 and 7-6 in Friday's doubleheader and 13-2 and 8-6 in Saturday's two contests.

The Bronchos are now 4-0 in conference play and 24-5 overall and have won 19 of their last 21 contests. The Wildcats fall to 725.

"We've played outstanding," said Head Coach Wendell Simmons. "We need to keep doing what we're doing and try to improve and maybe climb into the top 10."

The Bronchos pounded Wildcat pitching, averaging 10 runs and 10.7 hits for the four- game series. UCO rapped nine home runs, four in Friday' s first game as they exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the second to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 10-2 lead.

"I knew that we had the possibility to score a lot of runs," said Simmons. "We try to be aggressive at the plate and that helps out our pitching. Our pitcher are going to pitch better if they know our hitters are going to score runs to back them up."

Sophomore right-hander Brian Nichols picked up his fifth win of the year against no defeats, giving up nine hits and eight runs in 5 2/ 3 innings.

UCO got homers from Zac Robinson, David Flick, Dave Miller and Jeff Hockett in that victory.

Friday's second contest was much closer as the fast-starting Bronchos jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four innings. The Wildcats responded by reeling off five runs off UCO starter Greg Hall to take a 6-5 advantage into the bottom of the seventh, but the Bronchos scored two to take the seven- inning contest 7-6.

Junior Chad Tredway picked up his third win of the season against no losses. Tredway entered the contest with two out in the top of the seventh in relief of hall who gave up seven hits and six runs against six strikeouts.

UCO's dominance continued into Saturday's first game as the Bronchos reeled off 15 hits against four Wildcat pitchers en route to the 13-2 triumph.

Senior righty Kaleb Schroeder hurled a two- hit, two- run contest before being relieved by Cam Carrier after six innings.

Schroeder upped his record to 5-2 on the year with the win and is tied with freshman Greg Hall with 39 strikeouts on the year.

improving all year," said Simmons. "We have some new players in the infield...but we're starting to come together. We're more relaxed, and we communicate better, and I think that just comes from winning."

UCO got a perfect 4-for-4 effort in that game from junior Zac Robinson who leads the team in hitting with an average of .486.

We're blowin' down this dirt road, me and the Mercury and Bubba Sue. Bubba Sue pops the top on a warm can of Meisterbrau and tells me about her dream of becoming a diesel truck mechanic.

I've heard this story before, so I pay more attention to the road than I do her.

It's a good thing, too, 'cause this shadow starts slithering across the Merc's path, and I realize it ain't a shadow at all, but a big black rat snake!

Bubba Sue doesn't see the snake 'cause she's got her beer turned bottom up, chug-a-luggin'.

I jerk the wheel to the right, tryin' to miss the snake, but the right front tire catches a soft spot, and I damn near put us in a bar ditch.

We bounce. Bubba Sue spills beer all over her Alan Jackson T-shirt, and cusses. I feel mud and snow tread connect with snakeskin.

It's funny that at that exact moment, I think of another time, another vehicle, another snake.

Me and a friend was in his pickup when this rattler slithered in front of us, only he swerved to try and hit the snake, rather than miss it.

On that occasion we did end up in a bar ditch, and not only that, but the pickup's engine caught fire.

"Well, ya shoulda been!It's okay to run over snakes," she says, and then, after a pause, adds, "and badgers."

"What?" I'm bewildered, wondering where this comes from. "Why badgers?" I ask her. "'Cause," she says. There's a twinkle in her eye, and the birth of a giggle in her throat as she says, in her worst Mexican accent, "wee don' need no stinkin' badgers!"

I don't get it, but Bubba Sue is laughing like it's the funniest damn thing anybody ever said.

She finishes her beer and pops open another one. I light up a Camel, and keep watch on the road ahead for snakes and badgers and memories.
