UCOSA Finshes the Semester Strong Christian Tabak @CaffeineWallace Reporter

Resolutions allocating funding for Safety and Transportation Services “UCO Blue Box Initiative,” the Academy of Contemporary Music’s Honey Punch concert series and speaker fees for the Pi Alpha Alpha public administration honor society were approved by the University of Central Oklahoma Student Association at the final Congressional meeting held last week. Congressional Funding Resolution 18-204 provides $10,000 to the UCO Blue Box Initiative, a project begun three years ago by Safety and Transportation Services to modernize the campus’ emergency phone boxes. Last summer the university’s 20 indoor phones were rewired and updated to Voice over Internet Protocol, but the rewiring of the 10 outdoor phones was postponed due in part to a lack of available funding, said UCO Police Chief Jeffrey Harp.

Funding Resolution 18-205 was introduced by UCOSA’s Ways and Means Committee and provided $785 for ACM@UCO’s Honey Punch concert series hosted April 21. The funding went towards the event’s insurance, security and advertising costs, according to Ways and Means Chair Jon Lowry. The event was sponsored by Tulsa-based Honey Punch Magazine, an entertainment publication focused on local music and its culture. The concert featured local artists Break Up, The Ivy and Lauryn Hardiman. The resolution also provided $4,553 for UCO’s chapter of the Pi Alpha Alpha international public administration honor society to bring speaker Joel Clement, former director of the Office of Policy Analysis at the U.S. Interior Department. Lowry said the date of the event is still undetermined, but that Pi Alpha Alpha intends to host the event by the end of April. Appointments to UCOSA’s executive cabinet were also approved

through Congressional Resolution 18-207. The nominees for each position were selected by incoming UCOSA President Remington Dean. “I think everyone listed here is pretty qualified and involved at UCO,” Dean said. “I think we’ve done a good job here.” The new executive cabinet consists of Jacob Yager as press secretary, Bryce McKinnis as director of Athletic Affairs, McKenna Oathout as director of Philanthropy, Madison

Stueve as director of Programming, Dalton Elmore as director of Military and Veteran Affairs, Hazzik Alli as director of International Student Affairs and former UCOSA vice president Madison Richard as director of Special Projects. With the last meeting of the semester concluded, UCOSA Congress will be out of session through the summer semester and will resume regular meetings and business after the beginning of the fall semester.

Addison Staggs: Safety First Jonathan Goudeau @Goudeau_jdg

Sports Reporter

Seven months ago, University of Central Oklahoma senior safety, Addison Staggs, thought he had played his last football game in a Broncho uniform. “I said this was the end of my college career,” Staggs said. During a September 16 game against Fort Hayes State, Staggs laid on the Wantland Stadium turf after tearing the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Although he had the option for a sixth year due to a torn labrum in his shoulder sophomore year, he had no interest in pursuing it. “I didn't have any desire to play an extra year,” Staggs said. “At that point, I was about to graduate and said that was it.” After talking to former teammates, Staggs started to change his mind. “Everybody that I talked to that already graduated always said they wish they could come back and play another season,” Staggs said. “At that point in my head, I decided I would play an extra season.” To do that, Staggs started the rehab process in hopes of being back for the start of spring football. “It was a grind,” Staggs said. “You have to put your head down and do what you have to do. It's all worth it in the end.” While Staggs said watching from the sidelines was tough, it helped him develop a new appreciation for the game. “You never know if your last play will be your last,” Staggs said. “I understand that it's a privilege. Not being able to play put a lot of things in perspective.”

“I understand that it’s a privilege. Not being able to play put a lot of things in perspective,” All the work Staggs put in during the rehab process paid off. Not only was he able to participate in spring football, he impressed, being singled out by Head Coach Nick Bobeck as one of the leaders that emerged. A statement the former walk-on couldn't believe. “It's a feeling that's hard to describe,” Staggs said. “Coming from the position of a walk-on to the position I'm in now is something that I'm proud and grateful for.” After a solid career at Westmoore High School, Staggs had a tough decision to make. He had offers from smaller schools, junior colleges and other Division II programs such as Washburn University. Staggs was hesitant to accept one. “It was a process,” Staggs said. “I really didn't want to go out of state.” That's when Staggs decided to take a visit to UCO, even though coaches told him they wanted him to come on as a walk-on. He quickly fell in love with the city of Edmond and the school. “Being from Moore, Edmond is close to home,” Staggs said. “When I came on my visit I really enjoyed the city and the coaches. At that point, it was an easy decision.” Now, the sixth-year senior and team leader hopes to end his career on a high note. “Win a national championship,” Staggs said. “That's our main goal and I think we have the group to do it.”

Dear Graduates, Bravo! I join with you and family and friends in applauding you, our Spring 2018 graduates. Today, I encourage you to stop and savor your achievement and enjoy the celebration and joy that surround you, for your accomplishment says more than you may know. Your Central diploma is an outward sign of your commitment and persistence. It says to the world, “I can make the appropriate sacrifices. I can learn. I can meet the challenge. We hope that you leave knowing how to perceive problems and find solutions, and to meet a changing world with a culture of learning that will enrich your life. With your graduation, you have changed your future and that of others who will be influence by you. This is our hope for you. Know, too, that you are always welcomed here, either to further your learning experiences or as a loyal alum. You are a member of the UCO learning community regardless of where your life takes you. Finally, don’t pass up this opportunity to thank those in your life whose encouragement and love helped you in countless ways to reach this plateau. Tell them today how much they mean to you. You can make a difference; you can be the change you wish to see in the world around you. We believe in you. Don Betz President

Letters to Graduates

Letter From UCO Student Body President Let me start off by saying congratulations for all your hard work you have put into your journey here at UCO. For many of you, this experience wasn’t an easy one, but I believe you will soon find out that it was so worth it. As you’re walking under the arch at Old North and gearing up for the real world, I challenge you to take some time to look back and remember all those people in your life who helped make your college opportunity possible. Take time to stop by a few of your favorite professors and let them know the impact they made on you. Give your parents or guardians a call and tell them how you wouldn’t have made it without their support. Send a text to your best friend from freshman year that encouraged you to keep going when you failed your first test. I encourage all you seniors to take this time in reflection because when you enter the real world, you will have the opportunity to give back. Remember all those people that pushed you forward and helped you make it here. You now have the chance to use your degree and all the experiences you have learned from college to make an impact in your community. For some of you there is already a job out there with your name on it and for others you still have to plan your next move. I would encourage all of you to make bold decisions and take (well calculated) risks. With whatever you choose to pursue in life, I would urge you to never stop learning. A college degree does not stop once you walk across the stage, but instead is a starting point of becoming a life long learner. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” -Wayne Gretzky -Michael Scott -Stockton Duvall Going back to reflecting on all those individuals in your life that made this opportunity possible for you, it is your time to be that person for someone else. No matter if you’re a teacher, engineer, musician or any other profession, you now have the chance to make a positive impact in others lives around you. This campus constantly exemplifies love, compassion and care for each other and it is now time that you spread many of our Broncho values beyond our campus. Nelson Henderson once said “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” Now is your time, Bronchos, to plant trees for a better, brighter and more positive future of our state, nation and world. Stockton Duvall UCO Student Body President
