...COMMENTARY.
Thee Bronze Book has been published since 1913. Eighty-two senior have had their accomplishments immortalized with whimsy, detailed lists of their club memberships and, sometimes, their hometown. The seniors of World War H lost out due to paper rationing. By 1947 the Bronze Book was back in swing. The historical value of a yearbook is many-fold. Comparing the photos of the senior classes of 1941 and 1942, something seems to be missing. Males. The senior class of 1942 is overwhelmingly female. Many of the boys had gone off to war. Citizen's Bank of Edmond had an ad in 1920 proclaiming their "capital and surplus of $30,000," $5,000 more than rival Edmond State Bank. Grocers listed their delivery hours. Phone numbers were given as "13", "347" and one lucky business was "1." The social concerns of the time were reflected in the wedding list printed in the 1941 Bronze Book. The styles of 1969 are immortalized, for better or worse, in that year's edition. Now printed in a magazine format, the Bronze Book 2000 is in the works. Editors, photographers and designers are hard at work putting it together. Students have been asking for and paying for the Bronze Book on their enrollment paperwork. Few have received their copies. A yearbook is a historical document, personally and socially. It is a pity 0.3 the university has not delivered.

Survey shows society puts stress on students f you are a freshman and you are feeling ,al stressed, a recent survey says you are not one. A survey conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute in California found that an all-time high number of college freshman say they feel stressed. Thirty percent of first time college students reported feeling "frequently overwhelmed." The survey, in its 34th year, also reports that the number of admittedly stressed freshman has been on a steady rise since 1985. Labetta Wallenmeyer, Student Health Center director, said that the rise in those numbers doesn't surprise her. "It's not surprising at all," Wallenmeyer said. "Society is so much faster than it once was. We expect more out of people and of life now. It adds stress to everyone." Freshman may encounter added stress from sources they may not be used to. "There are a number of different situations that can make students feel stressed out," Wallenmeyer said. "That could be grades or the money it takes to go to college or the time spent away from family." Some symptoms of
stress included increased fatigue, eating problems, increased use of drugs and alcohol, persistent angry feelings and boredom. The affects of stress can also manifest itself in physical ways. These signs include frequent headaches, back aches, muscles aches, vomiting and diarrhea. Wallenmeyer said that the Student Health Center most often deals with the physical signs of stress. "If we can't determine an underlying cause of the symptoms, and we suspect stress, then we recommend the student visit the counseling center," Wallenmeyer said. For more information, contact the Student Health Center at 974-2317 or Counseling Services at 974-2215. From Staff Reporters

Counseling interns to teach students to boost self-image By Allison Franklin
stawriter ant to become a better person? Two interns at the UCO Counseling Center want to help. They have formed a self-esteem group which will meet for the first time from 2 to 3 p.m. Feb. 14 in the University Center, Room 316. The idea for the group came from Tom Knedler and Cheryl Kuhn, who are both graduate students in Counseling Psychology. "In working with clients, we realized that a lot of people had a real difficulty in regards to their self-image. They weren't happy with themselves. This was an especially big problem in the college population," Knedler said. This is UCO's first self-esteem-focused group, but groups of other interests have formed on campus in the past, Knedler said. "In past attempts to form groups, there has — Staff photo by Landon Sayler been a problem getting members," he said. Knedler hopes to have five to 10 members in Tom Knedler, graduate stud ent and counseling intern, the self-esteem group. prepares for hes next client. an intimate environment. We want these people to really connect and grow together," Knedler said. The group is free of charge and everyone is welcome to join, but Knedler encourages those interested to call him at 974-2215 to schedule a brief interview before the first session. "We want to make sure that those who are interested will form a group that will be conducive to everyone's needs," Knedler said. After the group's initial meeting, Knedler and Kuhn will set a goal for how long the group will meet. "We'll try to keep our meetings at the same time and same place, but everything else will depend on the group's needs," Knedler said. In the group, Knedler hopes to teach members many skills, including how to distinguish between being assertive and being rude and how to express themselves in a positive way. "This group will be an extra step on the ladder of success and it will be beneficial to all who come," Knedler said.

Eight students compete for title Kharoline Mkhize wins Miss Black UCO crown By N. David Owens
Staff unior Kharoline Mkhize was crowned Miss Black UCO 2000 Saturday evening, beating out seven other contestants in a three-hour competition entitled "Elegance of a New Millennium." The competition consisted of interview, swimwear, talent and platform sections. The interview phase was conducted Feb. 3. Contestants were required to have a single issue that they were especially concerned with and knowledgeable in, called a platform. Mkhize's platform was apartheid. During the platform competition, Mkhize, a native of Durban, South Africa, said African-Americans can learn from the South African struggle. "As African-Americans came through slavery, so did South Africans come though apartheid," Mkhize said. "We share a lot of similarities and commonalties that actually bring us together." Mkhize spoke out about South African students who were murdered while protesting South African schools policy of the official language taught in the classroom not being Zulu. Mkhize does not yet have plans for activities during her reign. "To tell you the truth, I hadn't thought past tonight." said Mkhize. "I can't wait to e-mail my family when I get home." As Miss Black UCO, Mkhize will be required to attend public events and give speeches to churches, schools, and civic organizations. Mkhize is a psychology major, member of the International Student Council, UCO Student Ambassadors, African Student Association, UCO Soccer Club and Broncho Cousins. Mkhize started off her portion of the competition with the statement "Poor people prosper, provided they are prepared to pay the price." Mkhize also won the Sherill Sims Best Talent award for her monologue "Life Under Apartheid," The Peoples Choice Award, the Sonya Carter Award, a diamond tennis bracelet donated by Gordon's Jewelers, a $1,200 cash scholarship, and a trip to the Miss Black Oklahoma Scholarship pageant. Other awards given included;

Mistress of ceremonies Sherill Carrington (formerly Sherill Sims) was honored by having the best talent award named after her in a surprise part of the ceremony. When shown the trophy, Carrington tearfully said, "It has my name on it and everything!" The Sherill Sims Best Talent Award will be awarded each year to the winner of the talent competition. Last year's Miss Black UCO, junior Dawn Haygood, from Baltimore, Md., was on hand to crown the winner. "I am not going to cry," Haygood said tearfully as she handed out the awards and sashes. "It has truly been a year that I will not forget, a chapter in my life is coming to an end." The seven contestants ranged in age from 19 to 23 and came from as close as Midwest City and as far away as Botswana. The contestants were: Regina Grace, 22, from Greenville Mississippi. UCO assistant football coach resigns after twelve years entral Oklahoma assistant football coach George Hauser announced his resignation Tuesday to take over as offensive coordinator at Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&MKingsville. Hauser, who completed his eighth year as the running backs coach at UCO last fall, will begin his duties at TMUK this week. The Javelinas open spring practice in two weeks under new head coach Richard Cundiff. The search for Hauser's replacement will begin immediately. "It is with very mixed emotions that I have to make this move, bit it's something I have to do for my career," said Hauser.
He was a member for the UCO coaching staff in some capacity since 1987. " I am very indebted to UCO, and especially Gary Howard, for taking a chance on me and I will always be a Broncho. I have a great deal of love and respect for the people at this University and especially the athletic department." Hauser, a football-baseball standout at Weatherford High School, was a four-year baseball letterman at pitcher for UCO in the 1980s. He still owns school records for 26 career wins and 13 saves. He was an NAIA All-District 9 selection in 1984 and '85. Hauser spent one year as a stockbroker after graduating UCO, then came back in 1987 as the student assistant football
