News Updates Oil drilling challenges rejected Around 250,000 people attended the island-wide coordinated demonstrations protesting against drilling for oil off the coast of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote at the beginning of June. On the 24th June the Supreme Court issued a press release stating that all seven of the legal challenges, presented by the Canarian government and various environmental bodies, had been dismissed by the judges of the Supreme Court by a majority decision. Oil Giant Repsol has been prevented from making definitive drilling plans, whilst the legal issues remained, although they received permission to carry out exploratory work some time back, but these challenges represented the final hurdle in the legal battle against the commencement of commercial drilling. The decision was welcomed by the Spanish minister of industry, JosĂŠ Manuel Soria, who called it a great day for the Canaries.

Replanting the canaries Grazing animals are a familiar sight here in Fuerteventura, yet the feeding of the farm animals across the Canary Islands represents one of the largest challenges to the local governments, as currently over 95% of the feed is imported. Local government departments, universities and industries across the islands have now come together to try and tackle this problem by replanting various allocated areas with a range of plants that are most suitable for grazing. The plan is to intensively grow and re-introduce local plants like Tagasaste and Canarian barley alongside other foreign plants that have a higher yield and nutrient content. The replanting plan will begin

with a testing phase in November, to establish which drought tolerant plants are most suitable, followed by the main roll out in 2015. The overall aim is that by 2020, 20% of the feed consumed will come from local sources.

More filming in Fuerte It seems that once again Fuerteventura is going to appear in the movies, but this time rather than our hills and mountains being used to depict another nation, this movie is about Fuerteventura and a very influential man called Miguel de Unamuno that resided here. Many of you will already be familiar with him as his statue stands proud outside the museum dedicated to him in Puerto Del Rosario, which is built in the

The Voice - Fuerteventura old Fuerteventura Hotel where he used to stay. Miguel de Unamuno (1864 –1936) was an essayist, novelist, poet, playwright and philosopher from Bilbao, who´s works included The Tragic Sense of Life and Abel Sánchez: The History of a Passion. He lived during a particular volatile time in Spain and after publicly espousing the Allied cause in World War I and opposing General Miguel Primo de Rivera´s rule over Spain, was banished to live in exile in Fuerteventura in 1924. To coincide with the 90 year anniversary of his exile, the filming of Unanamo in Fuertevetura is now underway, directed by Manuel Menchón.

Plant for the planet Plant-for-the-Planet is an organisation that was set up by a nine year old boy from Germany called Felix Finkbeiner. His idea came about when he was asked to prepare a school assignment that tackled the issue of climate change. His idea was to plant 1 million trees in order to offset carbon dioxide emissions. In 2007 the first tree was planted in his school yard and by 2011 after many celebrities, countries and companies getting involved, the goal of 1 million trees had been reached. The dream of planting a million trees in every country of the world is an initiative that raises awareness among children and adults about the issues of climate change and global injustice and carries the catch phrase ¨Stop talking – start planting¨. To date 13,000 billion trees have been planted across 193 countries and Fuerteventura is the latest region to join in the

green battle. The Plant-for-the-Planet projects will begin in the Parra Medina area, Oasis Park in La Lajita and the Guijey plantations.

Drug trafficking gang arrested In our May edition of The Voice we covered the story of a drug trafficker that was arrested by the Guardia Civil when he tried to enter Corralejo, and was found to be carrying over 110g of an illegal substance concealed inside his body. This month a total of 15 people have also been arrested in a series of police raids that have taken place across Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Tenerife and Madrid. Surveillance led the police to a suburb of the city where a laboratory containing large quantities of cocaine, weighing equipment and substances used to cut and distribute the drugs were hidden. The police revealed that human ´mules´ were being used to distribute the drugs across the islands, using inter-island ferry routes, and that this particular ring were major players in the Canarian drug trade. In addition to the 15 people arrested, three kilos of cocaine and 100,000 euros in cash were also seized during the raids.

This month Fuerteventura says hello to five new residents that have made the long journey by road from the rolling hills of the Emerald isle all the way to the rocky mountains of Fuerteventura. Finca Julie riding stables in Lajares now have five new four-legged friends that are settling into their new surroundings and looking forward to taking people out on long lazy rides across the beautiful yet stark Fuerte landscape. The three horses are called Hector, Charlie Rocks and Snoopy, and alongside them are two beautiful little ponies called Rusty and Flash. All five of them are happily enjoying the sunshine, although I think they are secretly wondering where all the grass has gone, but they are ready to go to work. So if you fancy enjoying Fuerte on horseback then give them a call on 0034 608 365 845.

DINE & WINE Many people have already enjoyed the delicious Scandinavian and International cuisine offered by The Ugly Duckling in the old town in Corralejo, and from the reviews it is clear that it is not just their food that is a massive hit but also their selection of Spanish wines and French champagnes. In time for the summer season, so that those of you with a particularly acute palate can enjoy some of the finest Riojas and Gran Reservas from across the Canaries and the mainland, they have extended their wine list and included some delicious new labels such as Vina Real to their list, as well as other quaffable choices starting from just €9,50 a bottle, so if you fancy something a bit special with your meal, then reservations are advised. The Voice - Fuerteventura KENDAL CHARITY UPDATE

JUST AROUND THE CORNER Many people that have found the Café Lounge, have been back time and time again. Some pop in for a nice pint and to enjoy a bit of friendly banter with father and son team Paul and Ben from Wigan, but mostly people keep going back to enjoy Chef Mick Carols delicious home cooking. The restaurant has a modern, relaxed and comfortable feel, but the menu is a far more sophisticated affair, with lots of tempting dishes to choose from, created with only the freshest ingredients and by a chef with over 30 years’ experience. The fillet steaks smothered with Mick’s special secret sauces and their whale sized beer battered cod and chips are always a hit with the locals, and the giant prawns, Shrewsbury lamb and sticky ´melt off the bone´ baby-back ribs are a favourite with everyone and once you have visited you are bound to want to find your way back there again. But for some reason, people keep getting lost on the way and have to call for directions! To make it easier, they have come up with a great idea and are now offering to pay for your taxi. Just jump in a cab from outside the Rock Café in the centre of town and ask for the café lounge. Enjoy a nice meal from their main menu and they will pay for the taxi. It really is as easy at that, so what are you waiting for? To book your table call or text: 627 372 773. ( Map Ref: F17)

A massive thank you to everyone that got involved, donated and helped out with Lee ´Ralphy´ Burton´s fund raiser for Kendal. We can happily reveal that events held in the UK managed to raise over half of the £500,000 needed, and the charity day here also was a huge success. The BBQ raised 1,120€ and the auction netted another 8,750€. Those figures alone are amazing, and then, thanks to a very generous donation from a man who wishes to remain anonymous, the target figure was met! Donations are still coming in and for all sports fans out there, there is also the chance to bid on a piece of sporting history, as thanks to Adam Bailey from Ingle Gym, Kell Brook IBF Welterweight contender kindly gave The Voice his own exclusive fight shirt, signed by himself, Kid Galahad and Dominic Ingle to auction off in order to raise more funds. All proceeds from the auction will go to helping other children and their families suffering from Neuroblastoma. Well done everyone!

MAD DOGS

& Englishmen

I always assumed that when people referred to the hot and sticky days of summer as ‘Dog days’ that they were referring to the well-known song written by Noel Coward.

T

he song covers most hot areas and nationalities and basically tells how each nations people run for cover, enjoy a siesta or avoid the sun’s rays when it is at its highest in the sky. All except for the men that hail from England and a few daft dogs, that is. For example: “In Bangkok, at 12 o’clock, they foam at the mouth and run. But mad dogs and Englishmen, go out in the midday sun”. Noel Coward came up with his witty tongue-in-cheek poke at the British colonial mentality in 1932, but the term Dog Days was not actually his creation and comes from centuries ago where it was used by many historical people, including physicists like Aristotle.

Sultry summer Dog days refer to the hot, sultry days of summer that occur in the months of July and August, in the Northern Hemisphere. They are typically the days that achieve the hottest temperatures, least rainfall and longer days, but actually have nothing to do with either Englishmen or mad dogs at all. The term dog days actually comes, like most things, from the Greeks, Egyptians and Romans and their love of astronomy and worshipping of the Gods.

The Sun Gods The ancient Greeks and Egyptians worshipped, mapped and named most of the stars in the sky. The Egyptians especially, thanks to their ability to create the first forms of paper, are particularly well documented and their writings tell us about their gods, the stars and what they worshipped. The brightest star in the night sky was astronomically the foundation of the Eqyptian’s entire religion and was known as Sothis. This star was associated with their holy trinity that included Isis the mother goddess, Osiris and their son Horus. They held this bright star in such regard that many of their deities were associated with it in some form, for example Anubis the dog-headed god of the underworld. They believed that this star was the ‘sun behind the sun’ and responsible for giving heat to the sun and the rise in temperature during the equinoxes, a belief that the romans too began to share

Sacrifice Dies caniculares was the term that the romans used to describe the days between 24th July - 24th August. During these dates the constellation known as Canis Major (Large dog) could be seen in the sky. The brightest star in that constellation was Sothis or Sirius as they named it, and was visible either just before or at the same time as the equinoxes (Prior to the creation of the Gregorian calendar). The romans believed it was an evil time when “the Sea boiled, the Wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all other creatures became languid; causing to man, among other diseases, burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies”. They believed that the evil heat came from the rage of Sirius, and so each equinox they sacrificed a red dog and gave it as an offering - in the hope of appeasing the gods and fending off the hot weather.

The Voice - Fuerteventura

To the dogs Unfortunately many dog sacrifices have been found, and many of them in not only ancient Rome but all over the empire, including the UK. Dogs were killed in the name of Sirius and then thrown down a well or into a pit along with the left-overs from the feast that usually accompanied the sacrifices. Although this practice sounds barbaric to us nowadays it did continue for many centuries. Nowadays dog days are just a way to describe the long hot summer days, so let’s not jinx the weather and be nice to our dogs instead. I love the long hot sunny days of summer and if Sirius wants to get angry and bring on the heat, then personally will be one Englishman ( okay woman ) that will definitely be out in the midday sun!

The Father of the

RAILWAY Nowadays air travel is the most common way to reach far off destinations, but it was not so long ago that train travel was the popular choice, and is in some areas is making a comeback.

A

ccording to the National Statistics institute the amount of people choosing to travel to and around Spain by air increased by 4.2% in April, but travel by train increased by a massive 21.1% (2.4 Million passengers). Although here in Fuerte there was a railway line in the past, it is no longer in use, and the only trains we see are the little fun trains that take people on short tours of the resorts. But 200 years ago, this month, the very first train ever, was being tested in England.

The early days George Stephenson was born on June 9, 1781 in a mining town near Newcastle. His father was a fireman in the pits and unable to pay for George to go to school, so George got a job keeping the cows the way of the horse-drawn wagons that carried the coal. By age 10 he began driving the horses himself until it was time to follow in his father´s footsteps and begin working in the mines. His first job was picking impurities out of the coal, then he moved around different mines, doing different jobs like fireman, plugman, brakeman and engineer. By age 17 he was still unable to read, write or do arithmetic and so he attended night school and learned to do all three.

Intrigued and educated Although now educated, his life did not get any easier. At age 18 he proposed to a farmer’s daughter, who rejected him due to his poor status. At 19 he married her older sister and at 20 they had their first son, Robert, followed by a

The Voice - Fuerteventura so George returned home. There he learned that William Hedley and Timothy Hackworth were designing a locomotive for the Wylam coal mine, where he used to work. His fascination for engineering grew and, not to be outdone, he began constructing an engine and locomotive of his own. At age 33, George and his assistant, local blacksmith John Thorswall, created the very first steam powered locomotive known as ´The Blucher´, and on the 25th July 1814, it was put to the test. It managed to haul eight wagons (30 tonnes) of coal, four hundred and fifty feet uphill at a speed of four miles an hour, and signified the beginning of the end of horse-power. daughter. George began fixing shoes and clocks in his spare time to help support his family but then aged just three weeks old, his daughter died and within a matter of months, so did his wife. With his son to support, George walked all the way to a mine in Scotland to get work. The lift that took the miners down and back from the coalface was powered by one of James Watt´s steam engines, which were considered to be the best around at the time, and he became skilled at repairing, re-building and improving them.

Construction begins Whilst away, his father was blinded in a mining accident,

Innovation & invention George and his son Robert built sixteen different engines, including the world famous Rocket, before succumbing to pleurisy at age 67. During his lifetime he patented several inventions, bridges and engines, including ¨The Geordie Lamp¨ a safety lamp for the miners to use around flammable fuels, and built the world´s first ever machine powered public railway in Sunderland. He also built the The Stockton and Darlington railway in 1825 and the Liverpool to Manchester in 1830. He was married three times in total, did not have any more children and strangely enough, is also the man we have to thank for cucumbers growing straight and not curvy!

The Voice - Fuerteventura

That’s the way we do it! Punch and Judy shows are a part of the summer and have been performing in their little red and white tents for over 350 years.

T

hey have performed to Royalty and Presidents, have had their own exhibition in the Victoria and Albert museum and are rated No.12 on the British Governments department for Culture, Media and Sports list of ´Icons of Englishness´. This all sounds terribly English and proper, but have you ever stopped and considered the story behind the entertainment? In order for a puppet master to be given the coveted title of ´Professor´ this is the original script that they had to use. SCENE ONE: Mr Scaramouche´s dog bites Punch, so Punch steals the owners stick and de-capitates the owner with it.

SCENE TWO: Punch returns home and demands ´relations´ from his wife. She refuses and instead forces their child into his arms, then leaves. The baby will not stop crying, so Punch bashes the baby´s head in with the slap-stick and then throws the child down the stairs. Judy then returns and finds her baby is dead. Punch tells her that they can always make another baby and again demands relations, so Judy attacks him with the slap-stick. Punch then beats Judy to death with it shouting ¨That’s the way to do it! ¨ SCENE THREE: Punch finds a mistress called Pretty Polly, who will have relations with him. SCENE FOUR: Punch falls and fakes an injury to lure a doctor. He then kicks the doctor in the eye and beats him to death. SCENE FIVE: Punch meets a foreign servant who doesn´t speak English very well, so he kills him. SCENE SIX: Punch kills a blind old man. SCENE SEVEN: A constable arrests Punch, with the help of the hangman. SCENE EIGHT: Punch then tricks the hangman and hangs him instead. Then he dances on his coffin. SCENE NINE: Punch beats the ghost of Judy to death, again, and then defeats and kills the Devil. …The End ..and that, unbelievably, is where we get the terribly English expression ¨As pleased as Punch!¨

The Voice - Fuerteventura

GAMER GOSSIP As the summer holidays kick into full swing so does the gaming industry. Each year in Los Angeles the biggest gaming convention, known as the E3, opens its doors and showcases the latest video games and gadgets that will be hitting the shelves for the major console manufacturers, like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo over the coming months.

CONSOLE CONFLICT

The main headlines from this year come from Microsoft, who after watching the Playstation 4 outsell them by two million consoles, have had a shift in direction and are once again looking at hitting the gamer market by collaborating and releasing some major titles such as Assassin’s creed, Call of Duty and Halo, later in the year. The Xbox One was originally pitched as being an all-in-one entertainment console with the emphasis on multi-media interaction and usability, however Sony stuck to their core market and aimed their PlayStation 4 directly at the gamers instead, but with a few added extras thrown in for good measure, a decision that has proved fruitful.

GADGETS AND GISMOS

The industry is not just about the games, as the gadgets and peripherals that go with the games playing style and

The Voice - Fuerteventura characters are also worth millions every year and competition to come up with the next best thing is fierce. Once again (okay maybe I am a little biased) Sony are looking at out-innovating Microsoft, and are developing a virtual reality headset, called Project Morpheus, which will allow players to interact and play alongside other players in a 3D world. Both manufacturers are also looking at streaming original series and direct TV to the console and producing additional internet content. They are also both looking at re-releasing older popular games like Grand Theft Auto V or Halo so that they can be played on the new consoles, but what Microsoft are planning to really regain their foothold in the gamer market, still remains to be seen. As far as Nintendo and the Wii is concerned, don´t throw away that console just yet, as although there is nothing much to get excited about from the Nintendo camp and the Wii U release date has been moved once again, fans of Zelda will be pleased. They have announced that they will be releasing a new 2015 version which will see Link exploring an open world, but with quests and side quests built in to the story line. At first glance this appears to be a Zelda version of The Elder Scrolls, so Wii owners will finally be able to see what all the fuss was about.

Games due to hit the shelves later in the year include: Evolve This is hailed as a revolutionary four player cooperative game with a twist, as for the first time in Gamer-land, another player will actually be able to take control of The Boss.

Destiny This comes from the makers of Halo: Combat Evolved and promises to be a cooperative multi-player game with MMO elements capable of hosting thousands of players online at a time, similar to World of Warcraft but set in a broken down earth environment.

Assassin’s creed - unity The seventh game of the Assassin’s Creed franchise and this time set in 18th Century France. New features will also include cooperative play, where three others from the Brotherhood of Assassin’s can now join in and fight alongside you.

Halo - the master chief collection In preparation for the release of the new Halo in 2015, this collection comprises of all the other Halo games re-mastered and in one box set, but it is only going to be released for the Xbox One.

1. This is a most unusual paragraph. How quickly can you find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so ordinary you’d think nothing was wrong with it – and in fact, nothing is wrong with it. It is unusual though. Why? Study it, think about it, and you may find out. Try to do it without coaching. If you work at it for a bit, it will dawn on you. So jump to it and try your skill at figuring it out. Good luck – don’t blow your cool!

2. A mile from end to end, yet as close to you as a friend. A precious commodity, freely given. Seen on the dead and on the living. Found on the rich, poor, short and tall, but shared among children most of all. What am I?

3. I am a word of meanings three. Three ways of spelling me there be. The first is an odour, a smell if you will. The second some money, but not in a bill. The third is past tense, a method of passing things on or around. Can you tell me now, what are these three words that have the same sound?

PARVO & An Article By Jean Isaac

with The Voice When money becomes a bit tight, people prioritise according to their needs and often one need that gets forgotten is vaccinating our pets.

R

egular vaccinations are necessary in order to keep your pet safe and healthy. There are many diseases and illnesses that are passed on simply by taking your dog for a walk, and forgetting to safe guard against them can be painful, costly and in some case lethal. Recently more and more dogs are presenting to the local vets here in Fuerte with symptoms that are associated with the virus known as parvovirus. This is a highly contagious viral illness that effects dogs, foxes and wolves and manifests itself in two different forms.

l Blood-Sucking Mosquitos The most common form effects the intestines and causes vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, fever and lack of appetite. It attacks the dog´s intestinal track and prevents the nutrients and fluids from being absorbed into the body, this quickly leads to lethargy and dehydration which is particularly dangerous when the temperatures outside are soaring. The wet tissue areas around your dog´s eyes and mouth may become red in colour and you may also notice an increase in his heart rate. His temperature will also change, some dogs experience fever type symptoms and in others their temperature will drop dramatically. l Parvo in puppies The less common form of the disease effectsthe heart and is more commonin puppies than older dogs. Most cases are seen when the puppies are between six weeks and six months old, and unfortunately due to the weakness of the heart muscles at such a young age, often results in death.

l How to prevent it In most cases the infection is transmitted by either direct contact with an infected dog or indirectly through the faecal – oral route. Heavy concentrations of the virus can be found in dog faecal matter and when another dog stops and sniffs when out for a walk, the infection can easily be passed on. Studies have shown that the virus can live in ground soil for up to a period of a year and can also be transmitted by the bottom of shoes or dogs paws that come into contact with it. It can sustain rain, weather changes and most cleaning products, but bleach does seem to have some effect against it and can help to prevent its spread.

l Get them vaccinated Regular vaccinations are the only way to prevent against this disease. Areas that dogs often frequent are potential breeding grounds. Here some people allow their dogs to walk unaccompanied, and are not about to clean up after them, so all areas prevent a threat and all dogs are vulnerable. Dogs that are being treated with drugs that supress the normal response to their immune system are also particularly at risk and for unknown reasons, certain breeds, such as Rottweiler’s, Doberman Pinschers, Pit Bulls, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, English Springer Spaniels, and Alaskan sled dogs, are particularly vulnerable to contracting Parvo. If you are in any doubt, then a simple visit to your vet is all that you need. They will be able to test, diagnose and help treat your pet as well as provide you with the annual vaccinations that they need to prevent against it.

l Keep them out of danger Back in the UK and Ireland we are told to keep puppies away from other dogs, areas that other dogs frequent (dog walking zones, kennels and parks) and off of the pavements and floors outside the home, until the final part of their vaccinations are completed. After reading this article, you should be able to see why. If a puppy comes into contact with the virus at a young age it can, and often will result in an uncomfortable and easily avoidable death. Just vaccinating your dog and keeping them away from hazardous places can prevent this.

BRIGHT and the

Beautiful

The temperature here in Fuerte has definitely been hotting up and with it has come the annual yearning for all things sunny and bright.

Bright colours are certainly uplifting; after all it’s hard not to look at beautiful blues and zingy lemons without getting a smile on your face. However incorporating the vibrant hues into your make up routine can be tricky. Go overboard and you can run the serious risk of looking like a clown, however done right a colour pop whether its eyes, cheeks or lips can brighten and warm up your skin for an instant glow. Read on

for our island inspired colour choices and remember to keep the rest of your make up neutral and understated.

Electric blue sea

If you’re after inspiration, look no further than our own beautiful ocean. From deep turquoise to neon blue, the varied hues of the sea are one of Fuertes most beautiful features.

Prior to applying any eye shadow, make sure your eyes are cleansed and prepped with an eyelid primer or concealer this helps vivid colours stay true. Once you have prepped your eyes and have your chosen shade, sweep the shadow across your lids; build the colour up more above the top of your lash line and apply less liberally towards the crease of your eyelid - this will create a gradient effect and less garish. To finish, apply a black liquid eyeliner above the top lash line, creating a slight flick effect from the outer corner of the eye then apply a neon turquoise pencil line along the lower lash line. Apply black mascara onto the lashes or go for some falsies for an evening out.

Trying out the trend

If you’re still a bit wary, why not try adding a splash of colour via your hair and nails. For nails there are a variety of awesome neons to choose from. Neon yellow in particular is very trendy at the moment and has been seen on the likes of Rihanna and Katy Perry. Or you could try a french manicure

The vibrant Hibiscus flower is to me the ultimate summer flower. My favourite colour hibiscus would have to be hot pink – a perfect colour for punchy summer lips. Before you apply any colour be aware that wearing a brightly coloured lipstick can potentially exaggerate any flaws so if your lips are dry, flaky or chapped make sure they are perfectly prepped before applying. Exfoliate them and apply a moisturising lip balm followed by a lip primer (an ordinary cream concealer does the job.) For the lip colour you want a creamy, opaque lipstick (try experimenting with some different shades to find one you´re comfortable with or use a gloss instead) Once you have your chosen shade use a lip brush to apply it; this will provide a greater depth to the colour, allow for a more accurate application plus you can gradually build up the colour so you can be sure you´re not going too overboard.

with a twist; instead of having traditional whitetips use a different neon for each tip for a fresh, funky look. When using bright nail colours the same rules go as if you are applying make-up so make sure your foundations are prepped and primed and finish with a clear varnish for some added gloss. Neon hair may conjure up images of 70’s glam rock but again it has recently leaked onto the celeb circuit and is now quite the trend. Try a few strands of yellow, pink or blue highlights at the front of your hair or go for a dip dye ombre effect; think a neon pink gradually incorporated into the bottom of your hair. Pink looks great on blonde and darker hair. Be warned if dying your hair at home don’t use a permanent colour and if you’re not 100% confident make it a salon job!

Reiki is a commonly used word nowadays and it is difficult to pass a therapy centre or salon without seeing Reiki offered as an option. But what exactly is Reiki and what can you expect?

I asked Leila from Humankind therapies to explain it for us as she is a Reiki Master Teacher in the Usui Takata Lineage, a Reiki Master teacher in the Usui Tibetan Lineage as well as a Reiki practitioner in the Eastern Usui Lineage- Reiki Jin Kei Do.

What is Reiki?

It is a combination of two Japanese words ‘Rei’ and ‘Ki’ which mean universal life energy. It is the ancient art of laying-on-of-

hands technique that heals and balances the subtle energies within our bodies, by using the life force energy. It is an effective system that addresses mental, physical, emotional and spiritual imbalances, where the Reiki practitioner serves as a vessel that channels the healing energies to the areas that are most needed. The Ki energies flow from the practitioner through the palms of hands, to the areas that the recipient most needs it.

The Voice - Fuerteventura

What can you expect in a Reiki healing You will be asked to lay down fully clothed on a couch or massage table. You will also be asked to remove any watches, belts, shoes, jewellery or pendants that are not made from natural products before the session begins. Wearing lose fitting clothing is best as it does not restrict your breathing and is more comfortable for relaxing. The room will be private and quiet and often practitioners will use soothing music, water features or dimmed lighting to help enhance a relaxed state. Before the healing the practitioner will wash their hands and centre themselves. Most practitioners will cover you with a light sheet or sarong before beginning the healing, as when you become really relaxed your body temperature lowers, this helps to keep you comfortable. You will then be left to relax while the practitioner centre themselves into a meditative state. The session will begin with stating an intention for the healing, such as “I offer X love and healing through the Universal Life Force Energy of Reiki.” Then the practitioner will place their hands on different parts of your body and rest them there for between two and five minutes, whilst they channel the life force. (Some practitioners will not touch at all and will hover their hands just above you) either way they will remain in one area for a few minutes, before moving to the next area.

What is the significance of the different areas? Each area is associated with a different feelings, emotions, problems for example the shoulders are associated with past hurts, memories, worry and insomnia. Each part of the body is associated with other things in the same way. The different areas are: eyes, ears, top of the head, back of the head, throat and back of the neck, throat and neck, shoulders, heart, middle chest / stomach, pelvis and hips, legs and then feet. Once each area has been ´attuned´ the recipient will then be asked to turn over and the same practice will continue on the back.

So what should a person expect to achieve from a Reiki healing? From my experience the client receives healing on an individual basis depending on the intent they set and their own requirements either physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, so in other words Reiki will heal the person where ever it is needed. Many clients feel that they have a deep sense of relaxation or feel energised…usually with the feeling that a great weight has been lifted from them.

Threads of time

Whether we secretly desire to look better because it makes us feel good or society tells us that getting older is not acceptable or fashionable, many of us, irrespective of age, are in some way obsessed with turning back the clock and reversing the signs of aging.

lthough some chose to grow old gracefully, the beauty world knows that the majority of us are happy to part with our hard earned euros in order to see a younger looking person staring back at us in the mirror. The American Society of Plastic surgeons estimate that around 11 billion dollars are spent on face lifts, breast augmentations and eyelift surgeries every year. Although the amount of people choosing to go under the knife has fallen slightly, the appeal of other non-invasive procedures is rising rapidly and new and innovative forms of lifts, peels, fillers and firming procedures are becoming more and more accessible and affordable every day. The latest of which is known as The Thread lift.

What is it? The thread lift is a non-surgical procedure which works on men and women who wish to slow down the sagging effect in the facial and neck areas, as well as problem areas of the

The Voice - Fuerteventura body. It is a non-surgical procedure which does not require hospitalisation, general anaesthesia, cutting or suturing of any sort. It uses very fine anchoring threads that are made from safe, biocompatible materials that have a rejuvenating effect of the skin whilst preserving the natural features and characteristics of the person, by stimulating the recovery of skin tone.

down the signs of aging, and puts off the need to go under the knife or some years. There is no ideal age to do it, as it depends on the particular person and their personal status. In many cases, the thread lift is used in conjunction with other procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers and peels.

How does it work?

There is a minimal risk of skin redness and swelling that can last a few days, a week at the most and some people will bruise a little from the needles, but usually these effects vanish in a few days.

Under local anaesthetic a hollow needle is passed through the skin to a predetermined area and then a fine thread is inserted into the skin, through the needle. The threads have barbs, like tiny fish hooks, which grab onto the soft tissue once inserted, providing support and structure that lifts and repositions the tissues. The needle is then removed and the droopy areas lifted by tightening and moving the threads into position and then securing them into place. Once the desired lift of sculpt has been achieved the threads are anchored and the thread cut close to the skin.

Who is it for? Often men and women who are considering a surgical facial lift of some kind will opt for this treatment first as it slows

Corralejo Map E2

Are there side effects?

What is the aftercare? At the end of the procedure a patient can return to their normal life and, aside from the side effects mentioned above, will see immediate results. However, the procedure has a progressive effect as the settlement of the yarns and the fabric used in their manufacture stimulates collagen production so Immediate exposure to the sun should be avoided. Make-up can be worn again after a couple of days and after about three years, depending on each individual, a re-tightening or adding of additional threads may be needed.

NICELY

Neon

It always takes fashion a few months to filter from the catwalk to the high street, and thanks to designers like Oscar de la Renta and Christopher Kane, neon is officially back en-mode and the shops are packed full of it.

N

eon colours are everywhere, and it is a fashion that is designed to get you noticed, so choosing your wardrobe carefully is key. As with most beauty and fashion trends emphasising your good bits and disguising your not-so good bits is key to looking good. Getting this wrong in neon really can be disastrous, but getting it right can look amazing.

l Be bold & bright Neon was a huge statement in the 80´s and most pop stars and celebrities used these colours to propel them into the pages of the magazines and newspapers. This year’s neon phase is a slightly more subtle affair. In the past orange, yellow, hot pink and citrus green were the four colours of choice, but this year other brighter, and not necessarily neon, colours are also being added to the palate to help bring down the volume a little.

l Neon & Tanned skin We are lucky to be in the sunshine for most for most of the year as neon´s are possibly the best colours to wear if you are lucky enough to have deep dark tanned skin. The bright hues against dark skin looks sexy, playful and fun and enhances the look of your skin tone and tan immensely. If however, you are one of those people that does not seem to tan and just manage to get a little bit of a glow - then beware. Neon will get you noticed and if you are already a bit pink, wearing bright pink will only emphasise the pinkness even more. You may be proud of your little bit of tan but neon will not do you any favours, so opt for bright colours or singe articles with a hint of neon instead.

Beating the

Bad Payers

An Article By Sabrina L Williams

with The Voice

As much as you may enjoy your profession, one of the downsides is finding yourself chasing customers for payment for services you have already provided. How is it that the customer who responded promptly when you were developing the project or discussing the job, has all of a sudden disappeared?

I

t is an unfortunate problem but it is one that many business-owners face on a daily basis. Here are some tips to help prevent the problem and others that can be used after the event - before resorting to mafia-style tactics!

l Evaluate the risk If a customer contacts you requesting your services, especially for larger projects where there is more money involved, take time to sit down and evaluate the risks. Consider signing a

The Voice - Fuerteventura contract that details obligations for both parties, the expected results and the payment plan. If the project is worth a lot of money, it may be worthwhile to obtain a risk and solvency assessment so you can see if this person or company has a history of non-payment or whether they are registered on debtors lists such as ASNEF. What is the company’s cashflow? Would they be able to meet the costs or will you end up chasing for money? There are reports that can be obtained online via such as e-Informa and Axesor where much of this information is available. Some of these companies offer the first few reports for free but require registry for continued use but an initial, small cost may save you a world of pain later on.

l Taking payment upfront This is an option that is used by many and it prevents investing time and money in a project you may not get paid for once completed. Even if you choose to charge only 50% of your own fee upfront, if the job requires materials, request that the full cost of the materials is paid before work commences so you do not end up out of pocket, and explain the payment terms in your quote.

l Legal proceedings This is the final step and should always be the last resort, but if everything else fails, it may be the only option. If you go the debt collecting agency route, they may have a department that initiates legal proceedings on your behalf but if not, seek a solicitor’s counsel before taking this step and then submit the relevant paperwork at court. It is not always possible to predict how a customer may respond so that element of risk still remains but hopefully these tips will help you assess a situation before it becomes a real problem and save you much time and resources in the long-run. When you request and receive a service, it is your legal obligation to pay for said service so those who are in the habit of leaving a trail of unpaid bills in their wake should remember that this practice is in fact theft!

l Stay up-to-date with your billing Even though billing is an admin nightmare, it is a crucial part of your business. If you don’t issue bills, you won’t get paid. If you agree payments in instalments, send your customer a reminder a couple of days before the due date and once the job has been completed issue the final bill promptly. If it seems you can’t be bothered to collect your money, they won’t bother themselves to organise payment.

l Damage control If after all the above, you find yourself with outstanding invoices, it is time to do damage control. This could mean contacting your customer to remind them of the missed payment as in some cases it could be a genuine mistake. If your customer does not follow through after guaranteeing payment by a certain date, you could send a written reminder detailing the service, the agreement regarding payment, the outstanding amount and give them a new deadline.

l Debt collectors If previous efforts have proved fruitless, you may wish to contact a debt collecting agency. These agencies use various methods to pressure the customer into paying their outstanding debt to you and normally charge a percentage of any monies recovered as their fee. It may well be worth paying the commission if it means recouping part of your money instead of nothing at all.

Social Media

& Security Using social media like Facebook and twitter is a fun way of staying in touch with friends and socialising with people from around the world. But it is not just your friends that are keeping an eye on you and your belongings - but criminals too!

T

he darker elements of society have now realised that there is no longer any need to ´case a joint´ as home owners are actually doing all the hard work for them. It may be fun to let people know that you have just landed at the airport, but have you ever stopped to think that you are announcing to the world that your house is empty and you are far too far away to do anything about it?

Think before you post and surf safely! VIRAL Social media is designed as a platform for viral posting and every time you post something on a friend’s site and your friend likes, tags or comments on it, then all of their friends can see it too. This then happens again and again so your post can be seen by hundreds of people that you don’t know, within minutes.

LOCATION AND GPS APPS These apps will post your current location and let potential thieves know just how far away from home you are and how long they have to raid your house and belongings. Disabling them is the safest option.

QUESTIONS Some sites often asks you for information that is shared publically like What was the name of your first school or pet’s name? Some of these questions are also asked by email account hosts, credit card companies and banks as security questions in order to identify you as the account holder. If someone does manage to get hold of your personal information and email address, it is really easy for them to impersonate you and commit identity fraud.

Making Life Easier For Your Heirs

An Article By Paul Montague DipFA,

with The Voice

None of us like to think about the day we will shuffle off this mortal coil, or how our loved ones will cope after we have gone. However it is important to spend a little time now to make life easier for our family when they inherit our assets, and protect them from costs and taxes where possible.

W

riting a Will is not the only step. You need to establish all the facts relating to the distribution of your assets, and look for the most advantageous structures to hold them in. British expatriates need to understand both the Spanish and UK regulations and taxes, and how they interact. You may have assets in both countries, and have heirs in a different country to the assets. Complex family situations need particular consideration. Or you may have concerns about how well your heirs will handle their inheritance. You need specialist advice on how best to structure your estate so it is distributed, and your heirs looked after, just as you wish.

Wills A UK Will may be effective in Spain, but must go through the probate process in the UK, after which it needs to be translated, notarised and go through probate in Spain, which makes for a long and costly process. It is advisable to prepare a Spanish Will relating to your local assets to smooth the legal process. Make sure it does not revoke your UK Will, or be at odds with it, which could cause delays and disputes.

Inheritance taxes & probate You also need to plan for Spanish succession tax, which applies to Spanish situated assets and worldwide assets passing to Spanish residents. Spouses are liable to this tax. The person receiving the assets is liable to pay the tax and the rates applied depend on various factors. Rates and allowances can be varied by the Autonomous Community, so you need to understand if the state or regional rules apply to you. Many British expatriates remain UK domiciled, regardless of living in Spain for years. This means your worldwide estate must go through probate in the UK and be assessed for UK

The Voice - Fuerteventura inheritance tax. You should seek specialist advice now to establish what you can do to lower or avoid the tax liabilities for your heirs, and if there are structures available which would avoid the need for probate for some assets.

Pensions When you sign up to pension schemes, you are generally asked to fill in an “expression of wish” form, which outlines how you wish your pension assets to be distributed on your death. It is important to update these forms as your circumstances change. Where paperwork is out of date, for example if you have re-married, it can be hard for the trustees to establish what your final intentions were.

Bank accounts and investments Ask your bank managers and investment advisers what happens to your accounts and funds, including joint ones, when you die. If accounts are frozen until probate is received it could make life complicated for your surviving spouse if they need the money or have pension income paid into it. Depending on the type of investment and how you hold them, you may be able to fill in a beneficiary form, where the

investments are easily passed on to your chosen beneficiaries, often bypassing probate.

The most important piece of advice I can give is to take specialist advice on all these issues, since getting it wrong could have consequences for your heirs. Build up a good, long-term relationship with your wealth manager. They will be aware of your situation and intentions, and be able to continue advising your family after you are gone, providing peace of mind as well as continuity of service. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual should take personalised advice. Prettie POTTIES As we are looking at providing a nicely neon backdrop to your summer this month we thought it would be good to include some plants that not only love long hot summers like agaves and cacti, but are also really bright and colourful too.

W

ith a little TLC, it is possible to grow beautiful flowers with glossy green leaves even when the sun is doing its best to dry everything out. Using pots is an easy way to create a colourful garden as flowers look fabulous in pots and hanging baskets, and give you the opportunity to add height, width and interest to your garden. Pots are also great places for growing species of plant that are prone to stress, as if you see signs of dehydrating, leaf burning or infestation appearing then you can literally pick up the plant in question and move it to another area where it can recuperate. The only downside to growing anything in containers, is dehydration. As the pots are not in contact with the natural soil, the plant is reliant on the water contained within the pot in order to survive. Regular watering is especially important in the hot weather as the moisture will dry out far quicker than usual, leaving your plant thirsty and susceptible to stress.

The Voice - Fuerteventura

Luscious Lantana These perennial plants are part of the verbena family and are striking to look at. They never fail to impress when added to any garden and are a favourite for most gardeners as they simply love full sun and well-drained soil, and do not need much moisture at all in which to thrive. They are hardworking plants and will do their best to survive in the worst conditions making them great for not only Fuerte gardens, but also Fuerte gardeners that are not blessed with green fingers. They come in an abundance of different varieties and colours and many will contain twin or multi coloured heads. They love to grow in pots or containers and the bright colours of the petals look great against the dark green / gold lush leaves that it produces. It has a pleasant smell that attracts butterflies and will grow to around four feet in width, making it perfect for groundcover to get rid of that unsightly picon too.

The Voice - Fuerteventura

Mexican Mandevilla This is a perennial plant which will grow happily in a container, but is a part of the dogbane family so it has to be able to climb (and is poisonous, so gloves are needed when tending). Placing this plant underneath a pergola, stone wall or arch is ideal, as it loves to spread out and grab hold of natural crevice to support its weight. This is an elegant vine which produces trumpet like flowers and will provide a colourful backdrop to your flower beds and garden walls. It usually comes in pinks, reds and whites however some hybrid version can be bought which produce beautiful bright yellow flowers or deep violet blues as well. It comes from hot regions like South America and Mexico where it enjoys full sun and little water, making a great choice for Fuerteventura, and can be found in most garden centres.

The Voice - Fuerteventura

Senational Solanum This perennial is a treat for most gardeners as it loves to just grown and grow as it is a relative to the hardy potato plant family. It comes in short varieties which are perfect for window boxes and planters, and also vine varieties which will root in a pot but spread out to cover pergolas and fences easily. There are many different varieties and colours to choose from ranging from dark lush leaves to marbled and variegated ones. These flowers also come in a range of colours from whites through to pale blues and deep purples. This plant looks good when it is in bloom, but also when it is lying dormant as the variegated leaves are quite striking in themselves and add a touch of interest to your garden. It loves full sun and is really easy to train. Trellises are the easiest way to get this plant to spread, but if you are of the more patient persuasion, then twisting these into little tree shrubs around a vine, as they grow in the pot, can look amazing too.

Canelike Canna Although this plant is not technically a lily or related to the lily family, it actually does look like a tropical form of a lily and is therefore a beautiful choice to add to your containers and pots. These plants are not ideal for occasional gardeners as they do require some TLC and the strong Fuerteventura wind is sometimes a little too strong and can tear its long fragile leaves. This plant loves full sunshine and is best placed in an area sheltered from the wind, and where possible with the bottom of it pot submerged in a saucer of water. Although this plant likes the sun and enjoys a well-drained soil, it grows from Rhizomes, which are underground stems which store starch for the plant to feed on, as so a little extra water supply from the roots up helps immensely. These plants are designed by nature for attracting insects and birds, so they are very attractive to look at. Some varieties have decorative variegated leaves which will add extra texture to your garden, and the colours of the bright flowers range from a subtle pink to a vibrant yellow or orange which look amazing in the strong Fuerteventura sunshine.

Fuerteventura´s proximity to the African coast has meant that it has been blasted by hot winds and deprived of rainfall for many years.

An Article By

with The Voice

Around 2000 years ago, when the first settlers landed, they chose to stay in the fertile areas around the valleys. These areas once had fresh water rivers running through them and are now known as La Antigua, Pajara and Agua de Bueys. When the Europeans arrived in the 15th century, the usual mismanagement of resources took place and most people had no farming skills so there was very little available to supply so many people.

The Voice - Fuerteventura

AGRICULTURE ARRIVES

By the 16th century things started to get better and La Oliva was founded. Agriculture improved but for some years it never rained at all, making agriculture almost impossible. When rain did finally fall, it needed to be caught and savoured so many ingenious methods were employed. If you visit the museum in La Cilla in La Oliva there is a display which shows the terrace system and mounds that were used to capture whatever moisture was available. Every house had a well, known as an aljibe, and the locals could only grow whatever they were able to water. This lead to the Nopale cactus growing everywhere across the island as It could supply food for the family, needed no watering and also provided essential liquid in times of drought.

THE WATER CARRIERS

As you can imagine, many people died during long periods of drought and during the 18th century the island witnessed hundreds of people emigrate to the Americas, Venezuela and Louisiana rather than die of thirst. Puerto de Cabra (renamed Puerto del Rosario in the late 1950’s) didn’t really exist until the early 1800´s, when barrels and tanks of water began to be shipped into the port. Once the water began to arrive, so did the people and the town began to grow. The water carrier ´El Aguador´ used to balance two big buckets of water on a pole over his shoulders and deliver it to your door. There is a great statue dedicated to these men on the road past the police station in Puerto.

WATER RATIONS

The droughts continued and every eight to ten years or so the water would dry up again, the crops would once again fail and people would leave. There were no lakes or rivers in which to get water, there wasn’t even a pond! Even the beginning of the 20th century witnessed an awful drought period. For the people of La Oliva, water was rationed and they had to go to the well at the Casa de la Marquessa (now known as the Casa de los Coroneles) to get it. You can still see the large heavily protected open well today. There is also another one at the rear of the house which doubled up as swimming pool in the good times!

FINALLY A SOLUTION

In 1945 reservoirs ‘embalses´ were thought to be the solution and there is a big empty one on the road to Los Molinos, which is well worth a visit. It failed to supply enough water to irrigate the fields and what water it did have was too salty to use. Then another massive drought

Photo By Enrique Nácher arrived, and once again people had to relocate. It was not until the 1980´s that desalination arrived. The plant was based in Puerto Del Rosario and although very limited, was welcomed as a miracle. Nowadays we have some of the most technically advanced systems which are powered by wind turbines, like the ones you can see in Corralejo. The water for the island now comes from the sea - and there is still plenty of that. So from the parched sailors staring at the waves and gasping to drink it, we now do just that. More farmers are returning to their fields and as you can see things are turning green again, maybe signifying that the fatal droughts of Fuerteventura are finally over for good!

The Bearded Fireworm (Hermodice Carunculata) As this month´s magazine theme is Nicely Neon and all about bright colours and hot summer days. Here in Fuerteventura, there is one sea creature that is very topical, as it really will leave you feeling hot, hot, hot and is nicely neon in colour too.

Corralejo Map C10

I

t is commonly known as The Bearded Fireworm and is a great looking little creature. It is actually a type of Bristleworm from the fireworm family Amphinomidae. It is a very slow creature and generally not a threat to humans unless it is touched! The fireworm looks like a fury orangey/ red punk-rock caterpillar, with pods of white fur along its back. It usually only grows between 5-10cm long, but there have been reports from other parts of the world where these strange creatures have been measured and reach up to 35cm in length.

Balaenoptera Physalus The Fin Whale is also known as the common roqual, fin back and razor back. Like all whales the Fin Whale was heavily

The Voice - Fuerteventura specimens mating, these creatures reproduce in a spectacular display using Bioluminescence. During the mating season in early spring, the females of the species will swim up to the surface of the ocean and emit a greenish phosphorescent glow, which attracts the males towards them. The male of the species then emits flashing lights as they move towards the female. As they approach one another the sex shells shed and combine in the water. The larvae then hatch and drift out to sea, to continue their life cycle.

Look - don’t touch! These fascinating creatures don’t pose an immediate threat and aren’t aggressive at all but always remember they may look fury and intriguing but LOOK, DONT TOUCH. Although fascinating to look at, consider them like a hedgehog that can fire napalm from its spines and stay away. If you are unfortunate enough to come into contact with one, by accident, sticky tape will help to remove the spines from your skin. You will then need to apply alcohol to the area, followed by cold water and ice as this will help to soothe the burning sensation. But if you don’t want to get burnt – then don’t play with fire… worms! hunted in the 20th century which lead to it being classified as an endangered species. Sadly, although endangered, it is still hunted by Japan and Iceland as part of the Commercial whaling Industry.

Painful poison They are usually found on reefs and rocks where they are clambering about looking for food. The have venomous white hollow bristles which, when touched, can penetrate the skin and inject a powerful neuro-toxin, producing an intense irritation and a painful burning sensation, hence their name. The intense pain can also lead to nausea and dizziness which can last for a few hours. This amazing defence mechanism means they fear no predators and are often out and about during the day.

Coral crunchers The Bearded Fireworm lives off of coral and eats by draping themselves over it and then sucking the living coral animals out of their rocky skeletons. They eat both soft and hard corals along with sea anemones and small crustaceans.

Fluorescent flirting The Bearded Fireworm has both Asexual and Sexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction involves the individual undergoing fragmentation. This is where the body divides into one or two parts and then regenerates to form a head or tail or both! The regenerated part then grows into a new individual and the cycle continues. Sexually, as in male and female

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

THE MOAN ZONE! aka

ANNOYING ANTS To The Editor, Can your expert help me. I always spend the summer months here in Corralejo and never have any problems with insects ( apart from the occasional mosquito, which lucky for me prefer my husband’s blood rather than my own) but for some reason this year we seems to be plagued by horrible tiny tiny ant-like creatures. Is there any way of getting rid of these things? And does anyone know what they are? as soon as we put anything on the side – they appear and I don’t know where they come from and the usual ant killer box things don´t work. Can you help us please?

Catherine Jacobs Hi Catherine, these little ants seem to appear in the warmer months, and disappear in the cooler ones but they are a problem for many people. They target bread, flour and wheat based items and, in our experience, love wet pet food. Keeping bread in the fridge or wrapping flour in cling film seems to keep them at bay, and if you are leaving fruit or pet food out, then pop the fruit or pet bowl inside another bowl and add some water to it. They do not like water at all, and the little moat will keep them at bay. Extreme measures I know, but even the cleanest of kitchens are

susceptible and due to their size and the sheer numbers of them, they get in everywhere. Ant spray will get rid of them, but only until you leave a few crumbs on the side again! The Ed

CRAZY!

Dear The Voice, Who had the crazy idea of building a cycle-lane in the middle of the pavement? My children are 7 and 9 and know that walking on the road is dangerous, but walking on the pavements in Corralejo is suicide! People on bicycles fly down the paths, with no concern for other people’s safety. On one occasion my little girl was knocked over into the racks outside a clothes shop as the idiot on the bike put his foot out to stop from running into her! She suffered a bumped arm and a cut knee but I question if an elderly person would have feared so well. What are these town planners thinking – are thinking at all!

Brian Coates (Ilfracombe, N Devon) Thanks for your letter Brian. Regular readers will know that bikes are often a topic for conversation on these pages, but they are an affordable way for people to travel around the resort so they are not likely to disappear anytime soon. All we can do is urge people to be aware that the two lanes marked on the paths, are reserved for bikes and cyclists do use them. Please do not walk in the lanes, especially with your back to the oncoming cyclists and take care when crossing over them by looking both ways. The Ed

TEDS WILDLIFE CORNER

Hi all,

This month´s wildlife corner is the small “Berthelot’s Pipit“which can be found in all areas of our island, especially the dry arid plains. It was named after the French naturalist Sabin Berthelot, a one time resident of the Canary Islands. The plumage of this bird is not particularly striking being mainly brownish grey on the upper parts with a whitish underneath, however the breast is clearly streaked with thin short lines of dark grey and the eye is surrounded by a whitish ring. The male and female look very similar and are almost impossible to tell apart. The Berthelot’s Pipit performs its chattery song in flight using a two syllable note which sounds like ´tzirlee´ and is repeated every second or so. Other calls produced by this bird have been described as ´chup and a nasal sounding ´cheep´. The Berthelot’s pipit’s nest is made up of plant stems, lined with wool and feathers on the ground under low plants, bushes, or stones. The female will lay two to five eggs with an incubation period of around thirteen days, and its main food source is insects, seeds, and caterpillars. Hope you like the photo. Regards,

Ted Park, Caleta De Fuste Thanks for your letter Brian.

PUNCH Have you ever arranged a get together and found that you always end up with loads of bottles of cheap fizzy wine or cava that nobody wants to drink?

This seems to be the norm in the summer, and although they may look like a nice gift, often they are the last to get drunk as your guests reach for the cold beers or the more tasteful options instead. So what do you do with all these unopened and unpopular bottles of plonk? Fruity punches are a great way of not only giving your guests something different to drink, but are great way of using up all that acidy wine that has been sitting unopened in your wine rack for ages. The trick is to balance out the acidity using a fruit or combination of different fruits mixed with it, berries, cranberries, pomegranate, orange and melon work particularly well and look great as they add a nice summery colour to the drink too.

RUSSIAN SPRITZ

This is a really cooling drink and great for Fuerteventura, as this time of year watermelon is really cheap to buy and found in all the supermarkets and fruit shops. This is simple to make and is a really refreshing drink, perfect for enjoying with a lighter lunch, but beware as it may taste sweet and innocent, but it does come with a bit if a kick!

CRANBERRY ZINGER

This is a really nice drink for a hot day, as it´s packed full of cranberries or pomegranate which not only have a natural cooling effect on the body but also have a sweet yet dry taste. This particular recipe has a slushy consistency and stays nice and cold while you enjoy your friends company or tend to the BBQ. Servings: 30 Glasses Preparation time: 10 Mins Ingredients: • 1 Litre of cranberry or pomegranate juice (frozen & crushed) • 1 Litre of lemonade ( pink if possible) • 500ml of Limeade • 1 Bottle of fizzy white wine or cava • 1 Litre of fizzy water ( Aqua con gas) • 1 large lemon - sliced, for decoration • Fresh mint leaves ( Menta or Hierba Buena ) for garnish Directions: First freeze the cranberry or pomegranate juice. The easy way to do this is by pouring it into little ice cube trays and allowing it to set. When they are properly set, put them in a plastic bag and crunch them down with a rolling pin or something heavy. Once they resemble large chunks simply add them to the bottom of the punch bowl, and pour all of the other ingredients on top, the fizz will do the rest. Mix all of the ingredients together and lay the lemon slices and mint on the top. You are now ready to serve and enjoy.

Servings: 30 Glasses Preparation time: 60 Mins Ingredients: • Half of a big watermelon cut into 2cm chunks • ½ a Litre of vodka • 1 Litre of fizzy white wine or cava • 1 Litre of ginger ale • 1 Litre of orange juice • Ice Cubes (crushed) Directions: First cut a few wedge shaped pieces of melon for decoration and leave them to one side for later. Next cut the remaining melon into chunks and place them in the bottom of the punch bowl. Cover them with the vodka and leave them to one side for about an hour to allow the alcohol to penetrate into the melon. Next crush down the melon with a potato masher or fork and add the crushed ice. When you are ready to serve, add all of the other ingredients to the bowl and mix well. Take a few nice glasses and place the wedge on the edge as decoration. Serve cold.

EAT YOUR Our parents teach us from an early age to eat our greens in order to stay healthy, but nowadays health experts are also telling us to eat our reds, oranges, blues, yellows and purples too!

S

cientists can now prove that naturally occurring chemicals, called phytochemicals, which are the chemicals responsible for giving fruits and vegetables their bright colours, can actually help us stay fit and healthy and fight against disease. These chemicals act as antioxidants and help to absorb harmful molecules (free radicals), before they get a chance to take hold and damage our cells. A diet that includes rich amounts of colourful fruit and vegetables can actually protect you against a range of different problems including heart disease, some forms of cancer, cataracts and premature ageing. When eating your five-a-day, think about the colours of the fruit that you are eating and try and pick one at least one from each of the four colour groups.

Healthy reds The red found in fruits and vegetables such as berries,

Corralejo Map F3

The Voice - Fuerteventura tomatoes and peppers contain Lycopene which is a carotenoid and anthocyanin’s which are flavonoids, as well as large amounts of vitamin C. Lycopene and anthocyanin’s can help protect against certain kinds of cancers, including prostate cancer and to keep the heart healthy. They also aid in improving vision and memory loss and can help with urinary tract infections. Fruits and Veg that fall into this group include: Berries like strawberries and raspberries, pomegranates, apples, rhubarb, watermelon, guava, radishes, radicchio, guava and potatoes.

Balancing blues & purples Like with the reds, these also contain anthocyanins but in addition, many of them also contain elegiac acid and Proanthocyanidins. These fruits and veg can help reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes and have also been linked with improving balance, short term memory in old age and vision. This group includes; Blackcurrants, prunes, plums, raisins, aubergines, red onions, grape, blueberries and red cabbage.

Leafing greens It is pretty well known that leafy greens are a great source of roughage and help to keep our intestines moving along nicely, but fruits and veg that fall into this category also contain a colour pigment called chlorophyll. Many will know from their school days that this is nature’s way of filtering sunlight and helping plants grow, but what many people do not know is that these plants also contain two carotenoids called lutein and zeaxanthin which act as natural sun glasses for our eyes by helping to filter out the harmful rays. Eating a good amount of these can help prevent against age related macular degeneration (age related blindness) and protect against cataracts. Foods in this group include; Broccoli, asparagus, rocket, spinach, avocado, greens, sugar snap peas, mange tout, cress, brussel sprouts, cabbage, courgettes, peppers, spring onions, leeks, green apples, grapes and kiwi fruits.

Yummy yellows & oranges Our parents told us that if we wanted to see in the dark, then eating carrots was the solution and in fact, with the exception of citrus fruits and pineapple, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables do contain large amounts of vitamin A which does aid night vision. It is also great at maintaining the skin and

the cells that line our digestive tracts, our respiratory tracts and our urinary tracts. They also contain carotenoids such as beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin, which help to give the skin a healthy glow, can reduce the risk of lung cancer and ease the inflammation that is associated with joint disorders such as arthritis. Foods in this group include: Galia and cantaloupe melons, peaches, pineapple, apricots, papaya, oranges, satsumas, nectarines, grapefruits, carrots, swede, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, peppers, mangoes, pumpkin and sweetcorn.

ere there is an abundance of fresh seafood to enjoy, and barbequing is a great way of bringing out their delicious taste and textures. A simple way of grilling prawns on the Barbie is by using skewers. This method works for both small and king prawns and all you need to do is shell and clean your prawns, leave them to marinade for a couple of hours, and then thread them onto skewers by piercing them near the head and then the tail. A good tip is to soak the skewers in water for a while before barbequing, as this will stop the skewers from burning. Once you have the prawns all neatly lined up, simply cook them on a high heat, and use the skewer handle to turn them easily. Here are a couple of marinades for you to try.

The Voice - Fuerteventura

LEMON & SESAME PRAWNS This is a nice marinade for the summer as it has a light and fresh Asian inspired taste. They also go really well with noddles or rice dishes for the cooler months. PREPARATION TIME: 5 Minutes SERVINGS: 8 INGREDIENTS: • 1.25Kg of Fresh Prawns (Gambas: Peeled and deveined) • 100ml of Olive oil • 2 Tablespoons of sesame oil (Aceite de sésamo) • 4 Tablespoons lemon juice • 1 Medium onion (chopped) • 2 cloves garlic (peeled) • 2 Tablespoons of grated ginger (Jengibre) • 1 Bunch of fresh coriander (Cilantro) • 1 Teaspoon of paprika • Salt & Pepper for seasoning

MILDLY MEDITERANEAN MARINADE This is also a nice light recipe, but is great for people that enjoy a more Mediterranean taste. These prawns also work really well with pasta dishes as well as on the Barbie. SERVINGS: 8 PREPARATION TIME: 5 Minutes INGREDIENTS: • 1.25 kg of fresh Prawns (Gambas: Peeled and deveined) • 125ml of olive oil • 1 Tablespoon of Dijon mustard • 2 tablespoons white wine • 3 Cloves of garlic (Minced) • The juice of 1 large lemon • The juice of medium orange • 1 Teaspoon of dried basil (Albahaca) DIRECTIONS: This is exactly the same as the recipe above. Simply blitz all the ingredients together and leave a little to the side for basting while cooking. Marinade the prawns in the fridge for about two hours, and cook on an oiled grate on the BBQ for about three minutes each side. When they turn opaque – they are ready to enjoy.

DIRECTIONS: Add all the ingredients into a blender and blitz for a minute, or until smooth. Remove from the blender and leave a little of the mixture to the side that you can use for basting while you are grilling, but put the rest in a shallow dish for marinating. Add the prawns to the marinade and make sure they are all covered. Leave them in the fridge for about two hours. Place the prawns on the dampened skewers and place them on an oiled BBQ grate. Grill the prawns for about three minutes on each side, using the remaining marinade to baste them. Once they turn opaque they are ready for serving.

CORN!

BBQ´s are great in the summer, but serving the meats with a jacket potato can become a little mundane, so why not brighten up your BBQ and try some delicious yellow corn on the cobs instead.

CHOSING THE CORN

Here you can find them in fresh, frozen and pre-cooked varieties and locally they are known as Piña de maiz or corn pineapples. When choosing your corn, always look for the freshest cobs that you can find. The outer covering or husk, should be bright green and tightly fitted around the ears of the corn. The older the corn, the more faded the outer leaves will be. Also, don’t be afraid to slightly peel back the husk at the tapered end and sneak a peek at the kernels underneath.

Fresh corn will be in tight rows and plump and milky. If the corn has begun to separate or turn brown and dry then this is old corn, and will likely be hard and tasteless when cooked. PREPARATION If you have bought fresh cobs, then pull back the leaves and remove the silky threads before cooking. Cooking the corn in the husks is not only great for presentation, but also gives you a natural cover in which to add your butter and herbs. But whether you have bought fresh or not before grilling your corn on the BBQ, a good way to ensure that it stays nice and soft is by soaking the corn in cold water for about fifteen minutes beforehand. This way some of the water will penetrate into the corn and actually steam it, whilst cooking. SERIOUSLY HUSKY A nice way to cook and present your corn is in the husks that they naturally grow in. Once you have soaked and removed the silks, pull back the leaves slightly and brush the kernels with butter or olive oil. Season them with salt and pepper and if you want to give extra flavour, then add a little chopped onion, nutmeg or garlic too. Rewrap the corn, and if needed tie the ends with a little twine to keep the leaves secure. For a more Mediterranean taste use some oregano, garlic, basil or coriander. If you do not have the husks, then this can be replicated by using aluminium foil. Cut little squares and roll the foil diagonally around the corn, then twist the ends.

COOKING THE CORN

Initially place your corn on a medium heat and turn them every few minutes so that the heat is distributed evenly throughout. After about ten minutes, move the corn to the side or to a shelf on the BBQ where they can remain warm but not in direct contact with the heat source (five minutes for pre-cooked corn) and leave them for another five minutes to steam through. When the corn is ready the husks will be dark and you will be able to flex the cobs in your hands. Peel back the foil or husk and squeeze one of the kernels. If they are cooked the milky inside will squirt out. Try not to overcook them, as they will turn mushy. Serve by piling them up on a plate and serving them with salt and melted butter.

Colourful

COOKING Birthday cakes, cookies, ice-creams and most yummy things usually come in bright colours. They look fantastic and allow a cook to be creative in their decorating, but for some people artificial colourings are a complete no-no, so a more natural solution is called for.

ourcing edible colourings is not impossible here in Fuerte, but it can be a little difficult and often the only colours available are the primary colours, so achieving other colours involves some mixing and experimenting. Nature has its own way of providing colour to our foods, and is a way that we can colour other foods, without resorting to artificial alternatives.

NATURAL HUES Often natural options are far lighter than their chemical rich cousins, so a larger amount of the colouring is needed. Shop bought alternatives are already concentrated so only a few drops are ever needed, and in most cases they do not give off any flavour either. Natural ones require a little more planning, as the natural taste of the food from which it was sourced will be present, so which food you choose to provide the colour for another is also important. Powdered versions are also much easier to work with than liquids as they do not affect the consistency of your cooking. Also if using dried herbs, re-grind them with a pestle and mortar to get them as fine as possible, before adding them.

PINCH BY PINCH When adding natural dyes to you food, introduce them gradually and continue to taste as you go along. Keep adding just a pinch at a time, until you get to the required colour. You don’t want your cup-cakes to look an amazing shade of green, only to find that they taste like parsley.

CREATING COLOUR The following foods will help you to achieve the colours of the rainbow, and just like the chemical laden ones, can be mixed to achieve different hues and colours too. Mixing the colours is easy, just remember your primary school art lessons: Red + Yellow = Orange, Blue + Red = Purple and Blue + Yellow = Green and all of them together = brown.

powdered tea. Spirulina powder which comes from algae and can be sourced in health food shops. Parsley juice, wheatgrass juice or spinach juice which you can source from squishing fresh stems. Spinach powder or parsley powder which can be bought in the herb sections in the supermarkets.

Blue: Blueberry juice which you can use straight from the berry. Red Cabbage – this is a little trickier as you need to chop and boil the leaves for around 30 minutes and use the dyed water that it produces.

Brown: Instant coffee granules are great and easy to use but concentrated espresso also works well. Heavily steeped strong black tea, cocoa powder or cinnamon.

Black: Activated charcoal powder that you can source from health food shop or squid ink works too.

SENSATIONAL

s t e b r o S

We know you enjoy our hob-top recipes, so this month we thought we would treat you to some nice refreshing summer sorbets to get your taste-buds tingling. These are really easy to make and you don´t need an ice-cream machine or anything fancy, so as long as you have a basic kitchen and a freezer compartment, you are all set.

Tropical Tang-Tastic

This is a deliciously tangy sorbet that works equally as well as a palate cleanser as it does a dessert. A great way to serve this is inside half a coconut (or pineapple) as the flavours of the tropical fruits work wonderfully with the creamy coconut taste and if you want to pimp it up a bit, then try adding a little Malibu, coconut cream or white rum over the top - as the adults will love it. PREPARATION TIME: SERVINGS: 6 Ingredients: • 1Kg of Fresh Mango (cubed & frozen) • 500g of Tinned or fresh pineapple chunks (cubed & frozen) • 115g Unsalted butter • 200 ml of lemon flavoured yoghurt • 1 Teaspoon of grated lime rind Directions: Cut your fruit into 2cm sized cubes and place them in a plastic bag. Freeze them for about an hour. Next take a dish and put the frozen fruit into it. Allow the chunks to thaw at room temperature for about ten minutes. Next add in the yogurt and lime zest and mash together with a potato masher (if you have a food processor then zap it for about a minute). Once all of the fruit is mashed into small lumps, use the back of a spoon to smooth out any of the larger lumps then mix well. Serve immediately.

Limoncello Lovely This is an amazing looking dessert, which actually tastes like a tangy lemon meringue pie. You can even cheat by using supermarket ice-cream as once you have put this dessert together, it looks so homemade and yummy, that your guests won´t care whether you cheated or not!

with The Voice Phew! The World Cup is finally over and what a great tournament it was too! I hope all you sports fans have had a great month, I know I have enjoyed all the drama. And of course, the football season kicks off again on August 8th with the Football championship and SPL Leagues in action. We here at The Voice Sports desk hope your team will start off on a high. So here we go with more reports and fixtures etc., for all of you.

Football I guess the majority of football fans will have been talking about Luis Suarez’s stupid biting incident during the World Cup. And of course the derogatory ban he was given for his third biting offence in his football career to date! Banned for only four months and nine International matches. Is that really going to make a difference and stop him from biting someone else again in the future Come on mate Grow up! You are not in the playground now! I guess this will be a talking point amongst many premier ship fans in the near future and we will just have to wait and see what happens.

The Voice - Fuerteventura Golf Finland’s Mikko Ilonen won the Irish Open tournament in Cork by one stroke from Italy’s Edoardo Molinari. A big well done to Mikko who led from start to finish. Rory McIlroy missed the cut by one shot! Let us all hope he will be in form for The Open. FA CUP community shield (Wembley Stadium) Sunday 10th August Arsenal v Manchester City 3pm What a great game to kick off their 2014-2015 campaign. Last season there were eleven goals scored during their premier league meetings. Arsenal finally got their hands on some long awaited silverware in a thrilling FA cup final where Arsenal came back to defeat Hull City 3-2. Manchester City took it right to the wire and managed to secure the Premier league championship by only two points ahead of Liverpool. This was a superb achievement for Manuel Pellegrini in his debut season in English Football. Let’s not forget also winning the league cup and scoring over 100 league goals.

Formula 1 Lewis Hamilton is falling further behind team-mate Nico Rosberg, who claimed victory in Austria with Hamilton finishing in second place. Hamilton did, however, pull off a fantastic start as he was in 9th position on the grid and by the second corner he was in 4th. Hamilton did well but was unable to catch Rosberg who finished 1.9 seconds in front. Earlier in June, Hamilton retired during the Canadian GP due to brake failure. Rosberg´s struggled with his Mercedes yet still managed to hold on and managed to take second place, ahead of Sebastian Vettel.

Next Races: 18th-20th July - German GP, Hockenheim 25th-27th July - Hungarian GP, Budapest

The Voice - Fuerteventura Moto GP Marc Marquez cruised to victory in the Dutch Moto GP, extending his lead in the championship to 72 points. Marquez has won the first eight races of this season’s 18 races. This makes him the first rider to win eight in a row, since Italian rider Giacomo Agostini back in 1971. At the start of the race Marquez was very nervous as he doesn’t have much experience riding in the wet. He started from second on the grid and passed Andrea Dovizioso with 11 laps to go. He then went on to win yet another race and this time by over six seconds.

Next races 13th July Germany, Sachsenring 10th August Indianapolis
