Ghana swear-in new President. President Nana Akufo-Addo was sworn in as Ghana’s president in a ceremony attended by dozens of African leaders, sealing a rare peaceful transfer of power in a region plagued by political crises yet world leading media is not giving it a prime coverage. Shame on western media, we are proud of Ghana and his people for right for the rule of law and the former President, John Dramani Mahama. The Voice magazine wishes the new President success in his administration and the people of Ghana. God bless Ghana

EDITORIAL
Let not rob Ghana of their success story. Ghana installed a new President in one of the most peaceful scene ever witnessed in Africa after a strong challenge to unseat the ruling party and the former President of the Republic of Ghana, John Mahama. As the final results of the elections came in, the incumbent president, Nana Akufo-Addo won with less than one million votes which could have been a contestations issue in a court of law. Former President Mahama gracefully like his predecessors relinquished power without troubles or fights and for that reason, we applaud Ghanaians for showing maturity in the elections. Of course this victory and success has not made headline news in many international press as well as the social media rather, the
most unfortunate speech of the newly installed President that part of his speech had been lifted from two former American Presidents, Bill Clinton and George Bush without acknowledgements given to them. In Africa, head of states never write their own speeches, it is a known fact and probably not read through it as well before the day of the inauguration. President Nana Akufo-Addo only read what was given to him by his media or script writer team and this time, it is embroiled in controversy. The president has kept a silence on the matter and left it to his media team to sort out the mess but one thing for sure, it is embarrassing to the President and the people of Ghana. Ghanaians are smart enough to know what the president wants to say to his people and they didn’t need to copy or plagiarized any president for that matter. The address initially drew applause from the cheering crowd but on closer review, lines such as “I ask you to be citizens: citizens, not spectators; citizens, not subjects; responsible citizens building your communities and our nation.” Was lifted from George W. Bush’s inaugural, circa 2001. And there was this: “Though our challenges are fearsome, so are our strengths. Ghanaians have ever been a restless, questing, hopeful people. And we must bring to our task today the vision and will of those who came before us.” The swapping in Ghanaians and dropping Americans, comes from Bill Clinton’s inaugural speech in 1993. The controversy lit up social media and tried to rob the people of Ghana the successful story of their elections and victory over fear and despair. We are using this medium to congratulate the people
of Ghana for their success and called on the President to act quickly by apologizing for the error of judgment on the part of the speech writer and accord him the right discipline to avoid further embarrassment. I see the action of the writer as lazy and negligence on his part. the ed Akufo-Addo’s spokesman Pastor Elvis Iruh One Mr. Eugene Arhin, a Editor-in-Chief spokesperson for President Akufo-Addo has admitted to putting in those passages but forgot to acknowledge the source, it is an unacceptable error on his part and should not allow to ever write a script on behalf of the president and as a check and balance, another person to first read through and vet the speech before delivering it to the President, this is a lesion not only for Ghana but for the rest of the world leaders, people are watching all your steps including your speech. Ghana should move on as President Akufo-Addo has so much to do in his hands and the expectations of the Ghana people is very high. He is not new to politics, he is 72 and a longtime politician and opposition leader whose election was a victory for dogged determination. The President lost in 2008 and 2012 but he never gave up and this time around, it paid off. The Gambia stand off In similar circumstances, The Gambia went to the polls after 22 years of Yahya Jammeh presidency. The election was called in favour of opposition candidate Adama Barrow who won more than 45% of the vote according to the country’s electoral commission. Jammeh had initially conceded defeat and praised the country’s electoral system as rigged proof. He changed his mind a week later and declared the results null and void citing huge and unacceptable mistakes by the electoral commission. As at the time of going to press time, the ECOWAS Head of States backed with military pressure forced Yahya Jammeh to step down and fled the country on exile to Equatorial Guinea after new President, Adama Barrow was sworn-in in Dakar, Senegal. The new President is expected to take charge and run the country according to the constitution of The Gambia. The end of Jammeh administration turn out to be disgraceful as he left with cheers of relief from his people His fate and future will be determined by the new government . Do enjoy reading the voice magazine and kindly give us your feedback via info@thevoicenewsmagazine.com Happy New Year 2017 to you all. Pastor Elvis Iruh Editor-in-Chief www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

FEEDBACK Dear Editor, TRANSPARENCY, ACCOUNTABILITY, & INTEGRITY IN GOVERNMENT “Once again, Dr. Emmanuel Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, has validated the current Nigerian government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and integrity. For the first time in a long time, the nation’s Oil Sector is rendering accounts to the people. I’m particularly impressed that the petroleum sector now uses the Balanced Scorecard system for gauging performances. Generally speaking, this tactical planning and management tool would help align the sector’s activities to the vision and mission of the government. Unlike the old practice, where officials simply took, sold, and banked oil proceeds in personal accounts – without real guiding principles. The political jobbers, who thrive on corruption, would disparage the minister’s explanations. However, the patriotic Nigerians, who understand what the minister says, would be impressed.” – By Dele Ajaja, USA Dear Editor,
Time for Nigeria to take over soccer leadership in Africa. Let’s start the revolution with two best wingers and professionals- Segun Odegbami- Mathematical (engineer) and Adokie Amaemesiaka - Chief Justice. (Apology to Ernest Okonkwo, late ace-football commentator). The duo are among the ex- Green Eagles who became Golden Eagles after winning the converted CAF Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria for the first time in 1980. These two personalities had remained in the heart of promoting sports in Africa like Platini in France, Figo in Portugal, Maradona in Argentina, Pele in Brazil even Villar and Tebas in Span. All great national footballers in their respective countries who later served their country and their continent in various capacities in sports administration and that has further promote their nations and sports in general. It is high time the experienced educated and good mannered people should take over in Nigeria and Africa NOW. To achieve the best objective of revolutionizing and re-enacting Nigeria, the Africa giants’ supremacy we must put the right peg in the right hole with no consideration for ethnicity, tribal, regional or regional, federal character theories. Dear Editor, The world pay less attention to The Gambia Africa has never seen anything like it. “ “The rest of the world has typically paid little attention to Gambia, a small, isolated country in West Africa. That changed on Dec. 1, 2016, when its people summoned the courage to vote Jammeh out of office. It was a rare victory for long-suffering Gambians, who not only demonstrated their disdain for his brutal regime but also sent a powerful signal of hope to the continent’s other aspiring democracies. Unfortunately for his country, though, Jammeh is refusing to go quietly — prompting anger not only at home but also elsewhere in Africa.” Jeffrey Smith, Founding Director of Vanguard Africa Movement! Dr. Isatou Touray
It is time for Africans to be taken more serious Dear Editor, Western Media are only interested in bad news from Africa Thank you honourable Editor. Western Media are fixated only on “bad News” from Africa. That fits perfectly into their biased political narrative to paint Africa as the Dark Continent. But we will tell our own story in our own way. We will not let them define who we are anymore! We will counter their Fake News with the Real News on Africa as the Rising SUN of the World in the 21st Century. The days of Media Monopoly by Western Media, dumping Fake News on us about Africa is over! Thanks to men and women like you and social media activists like me, we will set the records straight at all times. Those who want can follow me on Twitter @Tommarfo, LinkedIn, Tom Marfo, or Facebook for the Real News. Rev. Tom Marfo Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Feedback (Page for your letters) Can Mr Buhari “right the wrong” Abacha perpetrated against the people of Gambia? Come January 19, 2017, the world’s attentions will be focusing on Gambia whose president, Yahya Jammeh is expected to step down from (or be forced out of) the oval office of the president of the tiny West African country whose population is a little over two million people. Jammeh, a former lieutenant in the Gambian army who has ruled the country since he took over power in July 1994 in a bloodless coup that dethroned Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara, (the country’s first elected president after its independence in 1965 from the Great Britain) is sitting on a keg of gunpowder after attempting to annul the December 1, 2016 election won by Adama Barrow, a property developer. Jammeh’s ascension to power in 1994 was by no means his might! The coup succeeded in part because of the alleged collaboration between some junior officers (of which he was the leader) and the Nigerian military junta led by the late Gen Sanni Abacha. Nigeria under Gen Abacha was facing a lot of international pressures after the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential election won by a business mogul, Bashorun MKO Abiola. Many political observers in those days especially civil right coalition believed Abacha orchestrated the coup in Gambia to divert the attentions of the international communities away from Nigeria. How was this possible? Nigeria and Gambia had a pact which made the Nigerian military to provide training and technical assistance to the tiny West African region. At the time of the coup, a Nigerian army Lieutenant Colonel, Lawan Gwadabe was actually serving as the Chief of Staff of the Gambian army. Why Gwadabe, a veteran of many Nigerian coups was not arrested nor killed by the Gambian mutineers remains a conjecture to observers who saw Jammeh’s coup success in Gambia as the hand of Jacob, voice of Esau. Many observers even saw Gwadabe’s deployment from Gambia (immediately after the coup) to Nigeria by Abacha who rewarded him with the position of the Principal Staff Officer and the failure of Abacha regime to condemn the coup in Gambia as a sign that
Nigeria was more involved in the coup plot that led to the ouster of Sir Dawda Jawara. Lt. Col. Gwadabe is by no way a stranger to coup. Right before his deployment to Gambia, he had participated in at least two of the Nigeria’s military coups. He was involved in the Nigeria’s military coup that ousted Gen Muhammed Buhari from power in 1985. He, was one the four army Majors that went to arrest Gen Buhari at Dodan Barrack when the later was overthrown in 1985. (The other majors that took part in the arrest were Abdulmumuni Aminu , Sambo Dasuki and Abubakar Dangiwa Umar.) It was also the same Gwadabe as the commander of the Nigeria’s National Guard that went to arrest Chief Ernest Shonekan who was appointed as the interim President of Nigeria after General Ibrahim Babangida was pressured to step down following the protests that greeted the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential election. Strangely, it was the same coup that consumed Gwadabe as he was arrested on March 1, 1995 over allegation that he was plotting a coup against the government of Abacha and was convicted of treason and was on death row until Abacha died in June of 1998. I am on behalf of peace loving Nigerians calling on President Mohammed Buhari to please help “right the wrong” perpetrated by Abacha regime against the good people of Gambia. Mr Buhari, can you please ensure that Nigeria play the leading role in removing the monster that has terrorized the good people of Gambia for more than twenty-two years? We are all waiting for you President Buhari! Deji Sodeinde Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

MEET PRINCESS ADAEZE NWAJI -FACE OF THE GLOBE NIGERIA 2016 By: Gbenga Teejay Okunlola
P
rincess Adaeze Nwaji graduated from the prestigious University Of Buckingham, UK She holds a second class upper division (2:1) honours in bachelor of Laws. The beauty queen recently spoke to The Voice Magazine in an exclusive interview about the need to support local charities and NGOs. While in England as a student, she worked part-time for a charity organisation, United Response which supports individuals with autism and/ or learning disabilities. She is an enthusiastic c i v i c entrepreneur on a mission to inspire, motivate and become a positive role model within her community and beyond. She was endorsed an International Ambassador for Hope by Arm of Hope Foundation while serving as Face of the Globe Nigeria 2016. Princess Adaeze is an associate member of the International Bar Association (IBA) and she is currently undergoing training to become a barrister and solicitor at the Supreme Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Face of the globe is an international beauty pageant focused on community service and charity. The grand finale is held annually in London and Disneyland Paris. TV: Please, tell us a little bit about your background and growing up in Nigeria? Adaeze: I am a daughter of Chief and Lolo Okoro-Nwaji from Amene in Ohaozara local government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. I was born and raised in Port harcourt, River-State. Growing up in Nigeria was nothing different from that of an average Nigerian child from a hardworking home. It was not all rosy but am grateful for all the experiences. Apparently, growing up in Nigeria has made me resilience, prepared me for today and the future. TV: Was Face of the globe your first official pageant?
| London Bureau-Chief (teejayok@gmail.com)
Adaeze: Officially, Face of the Globe was my first beauty pageant contest. However my first attempt was UK Dazzling Beauty where I was awarded Miss Equality and Diversity, it was a qualifying stage for me to represent Buckinghamshire at the grand finale held in November 2015. Unfortunately, I was unable to proceed to the grand finale given that it was about same time with my Exams. TV: Was it a life changing experience for you? Adaeze: Of course yes. Face of the Globe pageant is not just a beauty pageant. It was more like a big family. Networking with girls from all conners of the world was exciting and educating. Amidst our differences were common goals, to be good role models, to be the change we want in our world and to make a difference in our communities. The valuable skills, experiences and the friendships are all life changing indeed. TV: Though, You didn’t win, were you proud to be selected out of over 6,200 applicants? Adaeze: Well, it all depends on what you meant by ‘win’. (Laughs) Apparently, we are all crown queens representing our various countries but only one queen emerged Face of the globe International Queen. To me, it is a win and I am proud to have come this far. I was selected out of that many applicants to be a grand finalist representing Nigeria and a crown face of the globe Queen Nigeria 2016. Secondly, I emerged top 3 people’s choice award at the grand finale with the support of Nigerians, f r i e n d s , family and Arm of Hope Foundation who voted and worked tirelessly to promote me. I am exceedingly proud to have come this far and I consider it a win. Continued on Page 22

TV: What gave you an edge over the other contestants? Adaeze: I wouldn’t say that I had much edge over other contestants but I consider myself to be highly resilient and confident. Even when I knew that some of the contestants have participated numerous times in other beauty pageants like Miss Universe, Miss world and are more experienced. It didn’t shake my confidence because I really don’t compare myself with others; I just give in my best and remain positive. I think it is a bit of an edge (laughs) TV: Being in the public eye now, you get a lot male attention, how do you handle that? Adaeze: with or without the public eyes, girls will always attract male’s attention and guys are always ready to chase (Laughs) Well, the attention does not require any special technique to be handled. I respect the confident and the guts of any man who makes an effort to express his feelings to me, I also respect his emotions but in the end, I know exactly what I want and I respectfully relay it to any gentle and responsible man in that regard . TV: How did the idea of contesting for the crown come? Adaeze: That is a good question. I didn’t plan to be a pageant girl even though I had done a bit of modeling in Nigeria and I have always admired outstanding beauty queens. Well, it all started officially in England when a friend of mine suggested that we should go and volunteer during the school holiday, like joining a charity fashion show or participate in any charity competition to fundraise for local charities and also make new friends. Unfortunately during that very holiday she travelled leaving ‘I and myself’ and I was bored so I started searching the Internet and came across a charity beauty pageant, UK Dazzling Beauty. I applied and when I got there, it was completely something different. It was like going to school and a lot was taught. I had to start learning many things like catwalk, interview techniques and the nitty gritty of pageant industry. Well, I became interested to do pageant for real. We were asked to go and volunteer in our various counties and communities. That same week, I went to church and they advertised charity dance competition to raise funds for the Buckingham soup kitchen service. To enable me meet one of the requirements, I applied for it immediately and started attending the ballroom dance classes. It was so exciting and exhilarating to be learning tango, cha-cha and other ballroom dance which meant that I was not only raising funds but also developing a hidden talent and skills. I got so much support
from friends, classmates and church members, and I was able to raise substantial amount for the charity. On the main day, I met a spectator who told me about Face of the Globe during the interval so, when it became certain that my exam wouldn’t let me participate in the UK Dazzling Beauty after all the efforts, practices and carrying out given assignments, I decided to apply to the Face of Globe as the concept is similar but more advanced and international. Indeed, at that point I had relatively good knowledge of pageant and my resume had developed to meet their requirements then I started aiming for the crown (laughs). Nevertheless, the trigger was my passion and interest in community service and volunteerism. TV: You were recently endorsed by the Arm of Hope Foundation (www. armofhope.org.ng) as an International Ambassador for Hope. You also visited France to volunteer at the Calais refugee camp popularly known as ‘The Jungle’. What was your experience like at the camp? Would you say that the condition at ‘the Jungle’ is desperate? Adaeze: That is correct. I am grateful to Arm of Hope for the endorsement as it is a sign that my work has been recognised. It has given me the support and a better platform to continue charitable work in Nigeria. Honestly, the condition at the refugee camp was in no doubt desperate as they survive by donations from individuals and organisations. Frankly, International response to Humanitarian needs has to develop a lot further. It is called ‘The Jungle’ so what do you expect from a jungle? It was indeed desperate. TV: Would you say that the Refugees and Asylum seekers should not be left to the Europeans alone because, it is a global crisis and everyone should support? Adaeze: When I went to volunteer in Calais refugee camp, I did because I am a citizen of the world and it is a moral obligation to offer help and support to the needy. It doesn’t matter whether it is affecting my country or not. Everyone should get involved; countries that do not share common boundaries with England and France can also send humanitarian aids to assist the countries that are taking the refugees. For instance, UK would be spending much more on health care, education and other social and basic needs to accommodate them. If aids are sent to assist them, it will go a long way in helping them to accommodate the refugees and asylum seekers. So yes, everyone should support.

TV: Have you always volunteered at every opportunity in any community you find yourself? Adaeze: Indeed, I have always volunteered at every given opportunity in any community I find myself. I grew up in a Catholic home; community service and volunteerism are at the core of my Catholic faith. Growing up, I volunteered with Saint Vincent de Paul and Marian girls’ society of the Roman Catholic Church. When I got to England, I found myself in a new community and that became a home for me. It is a fulfillment of a moral obligation to volunteer and get involved in the community. Not only Africa deserves to be helped, they also need help too. For instance, during Ebola Epidemic, British doctors and social workers from around the world came over to volunteer in Africa; they risk their lives to save Africa. We should learn to give back not to always receive. Nigeria may not be in a position to send money or humanitarian aids across but I was available to offer help on behalf of my country and it was fulfilling even though I got few negative comments when my journey to Calais was published. I saw a comment like ‘IDP camp in Nigeria dey wait for you as charity begins at home’ I don’t really pay attention to those negative comments as the positive ones will always over shadow them. However, I agree with the assertion that charity beings at home but the question is, where is home? Should I have folded my hands and say, I will not volunteer because it’s not my country and we have internally displaced persons? It is most likely that those who made such comments don’t even know the way to IDP camp. If they do, they wouldn’t make such comments because IDP camp in Nigeria receives foreign aids. The last time I went there, I could see that south -African Government and International organizations have been involved. It is high time we take everything happening in the world personal and take full responsibility as only with such attitude can we save the world and make it a better place for all who live in it. TV: What were the attractions of the crown? Adaeze: Well, It is not really about winning big prizes but being in a position to give back to the community. There are prizes of course but it wasn’t the attraction to the crown and am sure that everyone of the contestants felt the same way but wining the International crown, becoming the Face of the Globe International Queen and number one Brand Ambassador is glamorous, it can only be experienced to be able to explain the opportunities attached to the crown, they are numerous to mention. From traveling to different countries to wining cash prizes for your chosen charity are some of the attractions. I wanted to win cash prize for my chosen charity. TV: Which of the designers handled your wardrobe for the event? Adaeze: The official dress partner was Red Carpet Ready but because I had various sponsors. I had all I needed to look the best version of myself and there was no need to buy from Red carpet Ready or contract a fashion stylist to handle my wardrobe. I styled myself and it kept the cost relatively low. (Laughs) TV: Are you into any project that keeps you busy right now?
Adaeze: Currently, I am working with two amazing Nigerian charitable organizations, Arm of Hope Foundation and Nigeria Rebirth. Working as an Ambassador for Arm of Hope Foundation keeps me busy as we work with IDP Camp and Nigerian Windows. Secondly, I also work in the business development department for Nigeria Rebirth, a pet project of Aisha Buhari, wife of the president of Nigeria. Most importantly, I am working on my project called THE SALT PROJECT so watch out for it as it will be transforming for our country Nigeria. TV: Let’s talk about your love life; are you in a relationship right now? Adaeze: That is a very good question however, may I beseech thee to plead the 5th amendment to that question. I like to keep my love life private (laughs) TV: Who are your role models? Adaeze: I definitely have loads of people I look up to. Recently it has been the First Lady of America Michelle Obama. In the pageant industry, Oprah Winfrey has always been my number one role model. Diane Sawyer, Halle Berry, Agbani Derego and Bianca Ojukwu are some of my role models. Above all, my mom is my super role model and if I could be the woman she is for a day it will be a dream come through. She made me the woman I am today. TV: What is your ultimate aim in life? Adaeze: My ultimate aim in life is happiness and fulfillment. From putting smiles on the faces of the less privileged, achieving my career goals, to raising an outstanding family and everything else revolves around these cardinal principles. TV: What do you think about the current way beauty pageants are run now in Nigeria and the quality of models who enter these pageants? Adaeze: I reckon that the quality and the standard of beauty pageants in Nigeria are not like Abgani Derego, Bianca, and Regina eras. There are also way too many pageants now in Nigeria however, the purpose of beauty pageant has not been defeated completely as there are still positive sides to pageants in Nigeria. I have not participated in a Nigerian beauty pageant but haven been a panelist at the prestigious Face of Democracy Nigeria Pageant, I would say that the quality of their models was rather impressive. TV: There’s a new age of people who believe that the societal idea of beauty largely affects self esteem negatively, how would you define beauty and the relentless quest for it? Adaeze: The concept of beauty is relative or perceptive. Most people do not understand that beauty pageant is much more than pretty faces. There must be a brain behind that beauty or it is something else I cannot define. I also do not agree with that societal idea which believes that a beauty pageant affects self esteem negatively as the reverse is really the case. In a nutshell, beauty is beyond outward appearances therefore, any relentless quest for beauty should be channeled inwardly. Continued on Page 24

Continued from page 23 TV: What would you say has been your greatest accomplishments so far? Adaeze: My greatest achievement is being able to represent and project the image of my country internationally and being able to project the positive side of pageant like advocating for community involvement and service in the best of my abilities. Most girls I have spoken to are beginning to understand that pageant is not about what you get but what you are able to give back to the society at large. It has also given me the platform to impact my society and mentor youths. Being able to put smiles on the faces of the less privileged are some of my greatest accomplishments. In a nutshell, impacting lives and investing in people are my greatest accomplishment. TV: Do you think without pageants you won’t have the reach and the impact? Adaeze: Perceptively, with or without pageants, I would have still made the impact because it is not the crown but the wearer that really counts. Pageant gave me the platform and opportunity to be in a position of influence to make impact and without it; it would have taken a longer time. It is a continuous process. TV: On a lighter note, please tell us one thing nobody knows about you... a guilty pleasure, favourite musicians and music, or a luxury product you wouldn’t mind breaking the bank for? Adaeze: hmmm what could that be... laughs. It could be the late night or should I say sometimes, I wake up at midnights to eat chocolate knowing that I will end up having nightmares and am really particular about my teeth, I still can’t quit. I love classical music, I am fascinated by the likes of Mosant, Luciano Pavarotti, Asa, Adele, Bob Marley, Fela and 2face Idibia. They are some of my favourite musicians but the list is endless as I can listen to any good music. I love Hymns a lot too. I like a number of Luxury products but I wouldn’t break bank to have them (laughs). In fact, they are better appreciated when it comes as a gift or as a treat. Anyway, I love perfumes and fragrances they mess up my senses, wrist watches and handbags (Blushing). TV: What is your assessment of Buhari as current president of Nigeria? Adaeze: It is of common knowledge that Nigeria is going 24

through stormy waters economically and otherwise but I am convinced that there is hope for Nigerians. At a glance, Buhari is to be blamed as the leader but blaming games will not change the status quo. He is producing very strong leadership for the country particularly his anti-corruption and reform of government institutions however, these seems to be executed without the same level of focus and attention on areas such as education, health, technology and above all the economic development which has reflected in poor economic indexes such as inflation, high interest rate, depreciating currency, rapidly depleting foreign reserves, slow growth and high unemployment. Perceptively, Buhari inherited a poor and a weak economy exacerbated by the previous governments and acute corruption which tends to have drifted his focus on developing the country as he is busy trying to recover stolen monies but as we know, a traveler who stops to greet every road user may never get to his destination. So, he should channel his energy and focus on developing the country in those areas mentioned above. TV: How is Buhari better than Jonathan as Nigerian President? Adaeze: According to Orwell: “politics as the system of cooperation, we are all condemned to ignore, face, or improve it. We can participate as much or as little as we like. Both extremes carry consequences”. I wouldn’t say that Buhari is better than Jonathan. I just reckon that they have different leadership style. Buhari is a disciplinarian as we know, he is an ex military head of state. That should put him on the extreme side compared with Jonathan. I would say that Jonathan is not far from a passive leader while Buhari is more of an active leader. There is no safe place in politics as involvement in it can either be more or less and they both carry consequences. Jonathan’s leadership style had great consequences on the country as well as that of Buhari. They both have positive sides and grey areas. It is not black or white.
corruption is simple; everyone should stop ill gains and put the country first. Honesty, integrity and patriotism are the cardinal principle that we proffer solution. If you love your country, you won’t steal from her knowing the consequences of your irresponsibility. It is painful but that is what it is but I believe that Nigeria will not remain a fantastically corrupt Nation according to David Cameroon (Ex Prime Minister UK). There is Hope! TV: Corruption is the biggest among the challenges in Nigeria. It is clear to every citizen that the level of corruption in the country is high. It’s found in every sector of society. Causes, Effects and Solutions? Adaeze: Tackling corruption starts with individuals, Sectors are run by human beings. The result of corruption is underdevelopment, weak institutions and poor structural development. Greed, selfishness, lack of integrity and accountability, transparency and lack of love for ones country are few causes’ corruption to me. The solution to

TIME TO CONVERT WEAPONS OF WAR OF NATIONS TO IMPLEMENTS OF PEACE BY OBUKOWHO ANDREW ADAJI John F. Drink driving ‘should be treated like murder or rape’ South Africa’s transport minister wants to make drink driving as serious an offence as murder and rape after more than 1,700 people died in drink driving incidents over the December holiday period in South Africa. The figures are up 5% from the previous year. Visibly agitated, Dipuo Peters said: We are seeking to reclassify drunken driving from schedule three which is less severe, to a more severe schedule five offence to ensure that those who negligently cause crashes on the road do not get bail easily and spend time behind bars.” Ms Peters said that consultations with the Justice Department were underway to finalize and introduce minimum sentences for negligent and reckless driving. Some 5,943 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, which accounted for 65% of all traffic violations arrests. We cannot have people dying like this. Emergency services and traffic chiefs are traumatized by what they see on the roads.” The announcement comes just a week after the release on parole of the hip-hop musician and rapper Molemo “Jub Jub”

Maarohanye. He had been serving an eight-year sentence for culpable homicide or manslaughter after killing four pupils who were walking from school while he was drag racing with a friend in Soweto back in 2010. Some say it will be hard for the transport minister to achieve her goal because Jub Jub was initially convicted of murder but a separate court reduced this to culpable homicide on appeal. South Africa has one of the highest rates of road fatalities in the world with more than 10,000 deaths recorded annually. This is in spite of having the most advanced national road network on the African continent.
Morocco faces political impasse after talks collapse Rabat - Morocco is facing an unprecedented political deadlock after the Islamist prime minister broke off talks on forming a coalition government following three months of fruitless effort. The impasse - apparently rooted in a power struggle between the Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) and figures close to the royal palace - threatens to provoke a political crisis and possibly even new elections. King Mohammed VI tasked Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane with forming a new government after his PJD won the most seats in October elections. The PJD rose to power after the king relinquished some of his nearabsolute power following Arab Spring-inspired protests in 2011, with Benkirane heading a previous coalition government for five years.
The PJD faced a serious challenge from the secularist Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) in October’s vote, which campaigned against the “Islamisation” of Moroccan society and came a strong second. Since the vote Benkirane has been haggling to rebuild his coalition, which had brought together a range of parties including other Islamists, liberals and ex-Communists. But he has proven unable to secure the 198 of 395 seats needed for a majority and in a surprise statement, he said he was breaking off talks with two parties, the centre-right National Rally of Independence (RNI) and the Popular Movement (MP). Analysts say the talks have become a power struggle between Benkirane and RNI Chief Aziz Akhannouch, a billionaire outgoing
agricultural minister who is close to the king. “Akhannouch’s objective seems clear: to deprive Benkirane of oxygen,” political analyst Mohamed Ennaji said. Mohammed Madani, another political analyst and law professor in Rabat, said the failure of the coalition talks reflects a wider power struggle. “Akhannouch is not acting alone, he is the spokesperson for the centre of power,” Madani said. “It’s about showing that what counts is not electoral success but closeness to the palace.” In the king’s hands? The PJD was the first Islamist party to win an election in Morocco and the first to lead a government, raising concerns among many in a country that has traditionally been among the more secular of Arab nations. Its 2011 win came after the king - whose family claims descent from Islam’s Prophet Mohammed and has ruled Morocco since the early 1600s - gave up some of his power after thousands took to the streets in peaceful demonstrations inspired by the wave of uprisings across the Arab world. Among the reforms were a requirement for the king to nominate a prime minister from the party that won the most seats in Morocco’s parliament. The PJD struggled in power to tackle rising unemployment and fulfil promises to crack down on corruption. Social tensions since the election have seen a wave of demonstrations in the Rif, an ethnically Berber region in Morocco’s north. Thousands have taken to the streets in protests over the death of a 31-year-old fish seller in the city of Al-Hoceima, Mouhcine Fikri, who was crushed in a rubbish truck as he reportedly tried to protest against authorities seizing and destroying his wares. There have been no signs of progress since the collapse of the coalition talks. The palace says it stands above the country’s politics but analysts say it may have no choice but to intervene. “The constitution is silent on the question of a prime ministerdesignate being unable to form a majority. It will fall then to the king to interpret the constitution,” said Abdellah Tourabi, a Moroccan political researcher. A decision to call fresh elections is possible, but unlikely, he said. The head of another party could be asked to form a government instead “but this will cause political tensions” with the PJD. “Another possibility is a fresh intervention from the king to ask for negotiations to resume, still under Benkirane,” Tourabi said.
Former Somali refugee is Canada migration minister Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has appointed Ahmed Hussen - a former refugee from Somalia - as the minister for immigration, refugees and citizenship Just over a year ago, Mr Hussen was celebrating becoming the first ethnic Somali MP in Canada. Now he has even risen further, by becoming the country’s first ethnic Somali minister. He came to Canada as refugee from Mogadishu two decades ago aged 16. He is a strong supporter of welcoming migrants and will now be in charge of government policy on the matter. Canada already has a refugee-friendly policy and offered a new home to almost 40,000 Syrian refugees last year.

Fidel Castro is gone, but hostility’s still thriving Fidel Castro, Cuba’s revolutionary leader recently passed away at aged 90. Cuba declared nine days of national mourning to mark the death of this iconic figure, whose demise has prompted emotional scenes in Havana and Miami, tributes and reflections from world leaders, and ushered the Island into an uncertain future. The outgoing United States of America President, Obama called him a ‘singular figure’ while the newly elected President, Donald Trump tagged him “a brutal dictator”. To me, Fidel Castro was certainly a symbol of a clash of ideologies. His demise prompted grief and jubilation. But in Havana, what was interesting was the harder story to tell in my 16 years career as a journalist though; reporters described a subdued city with an air of quite resignation. Many Cubans who he exiled or who fled greeted the news of his demise with delight. Flag-waving Cubans took to the streets in the US, chanting “the old man is dead” and “Cuba is free”. Fidel Castro ruled for nearly half a century. On the announcement of his death, Nightclubs were closed, music concerts cancelled, everything stood stand still in Cuba. But figures from across the political spectrum paid tribute to Castro. Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev said:”Fidel held his ground and strengthened his country at the time of the harshest American blockade, at the time of massive pressure on him. UK’s Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn hailed Castro as “a massive figure in the history of the whole planet” Castro toppled the government of Batista in 1959 introducing a Communist revolution. He defied the United States of America for decades, surviving many assassination plots. Fidel’s long life was even more remarkable considering the hundreds of cunning, and downright bizarre plots to kill him from exploding cigars to poison coffee, over 630 well documented plots to eliminate him, most drawn up by the CIA and Cuban exiles but they all failed. Jail, Back in Cuba in 1953, he launched a failed bid to overthrow the dictator President Fulgencio Batista. (Castro also took part in rebellion against right-wing rulers in the Dominican Republic and Colombia). Fidel was sentenced to 15 years in jail. At his trial, he said “History will absolve me” Political pressure led him only serving a year jail term. Upon his release, he went into exile in Mexico where he set up a formidable revolutionary group, the 26th of July Movement, with his younger brother Raul and Ernesto “Che” Guevara. The group headed back to Cuba 34

in 1956 in a Yatch carrying roughly 80 people. Only 20 of them survived an attack as they headed into Sierra Maestra Mountains. The United States of America backed Castro and the rebels who eventually mustered a large enough force to oust Batista. A jubilant crowd chanted “Fidel, Fidel” in fact, during a victory speech in the capital city of Havana, white doves were released, with one landing on his shoulder. Needless to say that Castro has his flaws, few months after taking power, Castro had talks with the then US Vice President, Richard Nixon. It was hoped or expected he could be a friend of the United States of America. But a year later, Castro nationalised US firms in Cuba without compensation.
America was furious, took offence and gob smacked and, in 1961 the CIA sponsored paramilitaries to overthrow Fidel Castro in what became the shameful disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion. The able and very strong Fidel directed operations from the top of a tank, defeated the invaders, declared Cuba a Communist State! Castro pushed his country into the arms of the old Soviet Union as the Cold War raged. It was on record that the Soviets bankrolled or funded his rule with a $4 billion USD annual aid package, including oil and weapons. Raising high tensions dragged Cuba into the heart of the battle between the USA and the arch rival should I say , enemy the USSR?, culminating in the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, widely believed to be the closest the world has ever come to nuclear war. President J.F. Kennedy deployed search vessels to head for Cuba to carry out a full inspection. A very adamant stubborn Castro urged Russian Premier Nikita Khruschev to threaten the US with nuclear war until diplomacy prevailed. Thirteen days after the crisis began, US intelligence showed the missile launch pads
lived through the reigns of 11 US presidents since the 1959 revolution, met world leaders including Nelson Mandela, Olusegun Obasanjo, Kwuame Nkrumah, the indefatigable Robert Mugabe, Thomas, Sankara, and Muhammar Gaddafi to say the least... were being dismantled and the threat of war was averted. To take a quick marathon to the memory lane, with fall of the Soviets in 1991, and across Eastern Communist Europe; Castro’s position weakened and the Cuban economy almost was on the brink of collapse. Illness: Fidel Castro handed over the reins of power to his younger brother Raul after an intestinal illness in 2006; he officially retired as Communist Party Leader in 2011 as his health deteriorated. Despite a legacy of free healthcare and education, he was slated for huge government blunders, heavy-handed control and human rights abuses. During his 49 years in power, Castro, who
Castro created a very different Cuba and inspired hope in other countries of Latin America which sought to shake off Washington sponsored dictatorships. The Cuban government interred the remains of Castro’s ashes at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in Santiago de Cuba on 4 December 2016. The cemetery is the resting place of 19th-century Cuban independence hero José Martí and numerous other leading figures in the country’s torrid history. Adieu Comrade Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz as Cuba begins a new chapter of their history without Fidel Castro. www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

`Foregone conclusion` in English and` Bij Voorbaat Veroordeeld `in Dutch On 16.12.2016, Kenneth Ehigiene’s long-awaited book presentation was held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The book written in English, titled “Foregone Conclusion” and later translated into Dutch “Bij Voorbaat Veroordeeld” were both presented before a group of international audience, consisting of guests from Germany, London, Spain. Norway etc. at the “Brasserie De Houten Vier” in Amsterdam. The first part of the event which took off late afternoon saw the invited guests of honor which included lawyers, an ex police officer and an indignant citizen all giving short speeches of how they became involved in the case and enlightening the audience about the fatal mistakes of both European countries, namely Germany and Holland. A highlight of the event was when the ex police officer said “Kenneth`s only crime was been a successful black man living in Amsterdam South East. This was more than just enough reason to be singled out. Kenneth on his own part narrated his ordeal and said that it was orchestrated by “Foregone Conclusion” and “Foregone Conclusion” he defined as” conformity of the majority or many to certain beliefs, assumptions, notions, values or traditions which are based on a fallacy or a subjective criteria.” This he said led to the Germans, prior to establishing the true identity of their suspect, ordered for his arrest, or the Dutch failing to examine or take a look at his proof of innocence and rushing to a judgment of extradition. All because he was black, a Nigerian and successful businessman. The very special guest of the occasion was the renowned crime investigative journalist Peter R. de Vries. He not only wrote the forward of the book, but also wrote an article in the Telegraaf over the case titled “Een Nachtmerrie en geen Excuses”. He also aired two documentaries on the case on his TV program. Peter R. de Vries also recounted how when he confronted the spokespersons of the judicial ministry and they still held on to the fact that they followed the procedures correctly and thus did not make a mistake. Considering this, Peter said if there is one such case that is unforgettable and would linger on in his memory, it surely was the case of Kenneth Ehigiene. Thereafter came the much awaited moment when Kenneth Ehigiene handed over the first copies of both books, “Foregone Conclusion” and “Bij Voorbaat Veroordeeld” to Peter R.de Vries amidst a great applause. Another highlight of the day was when co-author Barbara Gwanmesia showed that she was multi talented by singing some songs from South Africa. With her powerful vocal chords, she brought down the house. The second part of the evening was more relaxed with the Deejay playing light music on the background. The guests present, were all treated to a buffet with notable dishes from

the African continent. While people were enjoying their meal, sales of the book went on. Here too Kenneth not only told his story to guests who did not attend the first part but urged them to join and be a part of this fight against such injustice. To this end therefore, he said he had set up a foundation: Stichting Foregone Conclusion, to help fight this plague which has eaten so deep in our world. He went further to reiterate that a fight now would create a better future for our children. Enough is enough of sweeping things under the rug He therefore urged people to come aboard to be part of the solution to this problem and also donate generously to the foundation: Stichting Foregone Conclusion Background Kenneth Ehigiene, a long-standing businessman in Amsterdam and a resident of the Netherlands for many years, was wrongly sent to prison in 2002 by fatal mistakes of two European states. The Germans ordered for his arrest because they accused him of been one of the biggest drug dealers in the Netherlands. In his warrant of arrest he was accused of using the ‘alias’ Mike / Michael, who had on several occasions utilized the services of young German girls to transport and smuggle drugs to many European cities including south America. The German justice ministry were asking for a 15 years jail term for a crime he never committed. The Dutch police because of the accusations leveled against Kenneth marched blindly with so much police force to arrest Kenneth, despite the fact that they had been monitoring and following him and nothing incriminating was found prior to his arrest The German authorities had asked for the extradition of Kenneth Ehigiene prior to establishing the true identity of their suspect. The Dutch on the other hand flagrantly violated Kenneth`s rights by rejecting all Kenneth’s alibi or proof of innocence. All efforts to make the judicial practitioners from the lower court to the Supreme Court see that they were making a huge mistake fell on deaf ears. Kenneth now became the hunted in a wild goose safari chase that started with the Germans and skidded off to a Dutch inquiry Till date Kenneth has utilized more than 8 lawyers to seek redress and both countries have neither shown remorse by apologizing, though they claim to abide by the rule of law. More facts about this conspiracy. Blunder and negligence can be read in his book “Foregone Conclusion” or in Dutch “Bij Voorbaat Veroordeeld”. NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN NATIONAL ASSOCIATION-THE NETHERLANDS (NNA-NL), CHIEF MRS. EVELYN AZIH Fellow Nigerians in the Netherlands, As we beginning a new Year, 2017. I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. This New Year 2017 is a brand new year to start afresh, to start strong, work hard and another chance to achieve everything we set to achieve together. Our New Year resolution is to serve Nigerians residing in the Netherlands with dignity and transparency, spread love and affection to all and face any challenge with courage and confidence. 2016 was a difficult year for many Nigerians, but we must look forward to the brighter days ahead. Things will take a better turn if we can develop a positive attitude and be optimistic. We can overcome hardship if every Nigerian starts thinking of what we can offer to our dear country instead of what our country can offer us. Positive change starts with us recognizing our faults, being open to criticism and ready to make amends. Positive change starts from helping our fellow Nigerians and the less privilege, positive change starts from condemning corruption both at home and abroad, appreciating people with a good name and not worshipping ill-gotten wealth. Realizing that the wealth we embezzle today will have a negative effect on our country’s Economic development. Nigerians must say no to religious intolerance, tribalism, and sectionalism. We have talented Nigerians with various expertise who are ready to offer advice in any area if called upon. We have given our full involvement to uplifting the good image of Nigeria in The Netherlands and can say with the deepest sense of humility and modesty that Nigerians in The Netherlands have so much to offer to improve the economic situation in our country. NNA-NL promise to improve the living conditions of all Nigerians residing in The Netherlands in 2017 with effective interventions in the following key areas. 1. Promotion of Nigerian Customs and tradition (2017 Nigerian Festival) 2. Education and Business Seminars. 3. Integration of Nigerians in the Dutch Society (Dutch Language and legal permit) 4. Women Empowerment and healthy Lifestyle The above are the milestones we set for 2017 which must be achieved with the collective efforts of all Nigerians in the Netherlands. I urge us to ignite our communal spirit, our unique approach to beating adversity, our inborn resilient spirit, it is that spirit that has kept the Nigerians alive, and it is that spirit that will keep us alive for generations to come. Therefore, I urge everyone to try to have a clear mental picture of the future and a realistic path to its actualization. I implore our Government to make strong laws against corrupt practices. Create jobs across all sectors and
maintain a diversified economy. We thank all Nigerian associations in The Netherlands and their representatives for their undying support while wishing you a Happy New Year with the hope that you will have many blessings this year. Long Live The Nigerian National Association-The Netherlands Long Live The Federal Republic of Nigeria!

ADVERTORIAL
INVESTMENT IN REAL ESTATE: EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR NIGERIAN DIASPORAN WITH KAYODE-OBEMBE & CO LTD Real Estate Real estate is the modern term for land, as well as any physical property or improvements that are permanently affixed to the land, including houses, buildings, landscaping, fencing, wells, etc. Investment in real estate therefore, involves the purchase, ownership, management, rental and/ or sale of real estate for profit or private gain. It is about more than just finding a place to call home, but has increasingly become a common investment vehicle to grow and nurture wealth. It is interesting to note that an overwhelming proportion of today’s and past world billionaires made their fortunes through real estate and in most cases, the journey to wealth starts from just one property and the portfolio keep growing. Have you ever wonder why property owners were called “lords”, or as now more colloquially known as “landlords”? It’s because owning properties gives power and financial freedom. There must be a reason why every rich person you know owns multiple properties. Even Donald Trump today remains a billionaire thanks to his real estate fortunes as most of his other businesses have declared bankruptcy. It is particularly gainful to invest in real estate in a growing and volatile economy like that of Nigeria as the real estate provides a safe hedge and store of value against inflation. The low rate of inflation in the country is positive for those that have real estate as assets because as the inflation goes up, so does the value of your real estate. Associated Risks However, in spite of the compelling opportunities that exist in investing in real estate, it also comes with its own associated risks. The most fundamental risk in real estate investment in Nigeria is the possibility of falling into hands of fraudsters. It is therefore important that you deal with the right people and invest in properties with genuine titles when investing in Nigerian real estate. After ensuring the integrity and genuineness of the people and properties with whom you are dealing with, the next important factors to consider are location, location and again, location! The rate of your success in real estate investment is determined largely by the location where you are putting your investment. If you are ever to choose between a good location with a higher price or bad location with a lower price, consider the former: When considering good location, one of the key factors to look out for include: area with appreciating value, axis on the line of current development, nearness 42
www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com
to other properties with current or prospective values and good transportation. It is also important to look at the locations in regard to the future, rather than that of the past for higher, long term returns. It is also financially wise for prospective investors to consider investing dormant capital that’s sitting in low yielding Bank accounts into real estate. It may be a tough slog the first few years, but somewhat later, you’ll probably wish you had bought more. Investing in real estate is also becoming an increasingly favorable option for those eying retirement and who want to take advantage of real estate’s return potential and its abilities as a portfolio diversifier and inflation hedge.

• Paying on installment with no interest. For people paying on a property over a period of time on installment, the rate is fixed and the payments never change. 3-4 years from now you might be paying the same amount that aren’t worth as much as when you first took out the subscription for the property on installment. As your net worth grows, the amount you pay monthly or so becomes a smaller part of your overall net worth, thereby reducing any feelings of stress associated with paying for the property. • Collateral asset. Unlike cash, which serves no utility function, property addresses not only a fundamental human need, shelter but can also serve as collateral material against loans. If our financial system goes to hell, at least you will have an asset you can actually utilize. Remember, cash is just an ordinary paper and worthless unless it’s turned into a tangible asset! Continued on Page 44
“
Why you must consider investment in Real Estate. Other reasons why you must consider investment in real estate includes: • Hedge against inflation. You only hate inflation if you don’t have an asset that is inflating. Inflation is increasing the values of your properties hopefully faster than any input costs and the costs to operate the asset. Some people used to think back in 1996 how ridiculous it was for anyone to pay N50,000 to purchase a plot of land in the Ajah area of Lagos State. Today, the same one plot of land is over N50M. Inflation is a powerful economic force that’s difficult to stop. You would rather want to own inflating assets than always be a price taker. • Rise on growing economy. When times are good, assets tend to inflate quicker due to higher employment, rising wages, and rising corporate profits leading to more demands on properties. Real estate tends to be a major beneficiary during a bull market. Forget about protecting yourself against inflation, owning real estate is a gainful opportunity to make money with inflation. If there happens to be hyperinflation, your cash is devaluing rapidly whereas your real assets start surging in nominal value. When economic tightness returns sooner or later, it causes another surge in property prices. • Generational asset. You can pass on property from generation to generation, conceivably making your family and loved ones lives a little bit better. Think about our university graduates nowadays who are complaining they might never be able to afford owning a home like their parents due to exorbitant prices. Now think how much worse it will be for their children. Everybody has heard a story of some grandparent buying a home for just N20, 000 that is now worth millions of Naira. If you can buy a property to live and enjoy, and then pass it down the family to give your children a heads start, what an amazing gift you’ll provide. But besides working hard, a massive generational wealth transfer should help support future generations. • Little effort to build wealth. The whole idea is to invest in assets that work for you, and not the other way around. Real estate is a relatively easy business to understand compared to investing in stocks. For instance, on a rental property, good location, good tenants, manageable maintenance, and rental growth are all it basically takes to make for a solid real estate investment, whereas stocks have so many more variables to deal with, including: management credibility, industry growth, competition, politics, regulation, tax policies, inventory turns, margin analysis, operating profit growth, and more. Meanwhile, to turn N100, 000 into N500, 000 through equity investing is no easy feat, neither is making an interest of another N400,000 on the deposit into a Bank over 7-8 years.

NIDO Europe woe Nigeria Diaspora media The Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Europe, under the chairmanship of Hon. Kenneth Gbandi, recently held an International Media summit, which witnessed over 30 media gurus, practitioners and journalist across Europe and Nigeria. The central agenda is on how to better market NIDOE to members of the Diaspora Community and highlights their
various activities to Nigerians both in the Diaspora and in Nigeria. After the opening ceremony by Chairman Hon. Kenneth Gbandi, various Keynote speakers took out time to make their contributions starting from Hon. Collins Nweke, a Media analyst and the former Chairman of NIDEO who identified media as one of the essential key tools required in politics, and hinted that its role cannot be overemphasized. According to Hon. Nweke, one of the key questions that confront global analysts, which is also one of the core issues that confronts NIDO today is what exactly they want to achieve within its core message and business. The world needs to know through the eyes of various media what NIDO they stand for and challenge the leadership of NIDOE to intensify action in this direction. He concluded that as the dynamics in which no one must be left behind, the use of social media becomes a sine qua non-and this executive seems to understand the importance of the media with this Media Summit. Mr. Femi Awoniyi, a veteran journalist and the Publisher and Editor in Chief of African Courier international Magazine in his remark advocates for clear-cut definitions of the objectives of NIDO, although already known by most Diaspora community, but added that there is the need to further packaged NIDOE to help it further achieve its set goals and objectives. He concluded that NIDO should gain more recognition both home and abroad within government and non-government circles. He welcomed the Media Summit initiative and proposed a NIDOE-Media strategic group. In further contributions, Mr. Awoniyi stressed the need of NIDO to join and be more active in national discourse in Nigeria and to partner more with local media in order to reach the grassroots and also to be able to be immersed into the mainstream media discuss. He also believed that NIDO should and must have an input into governmental policies. Pastor Elvis, the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of “The Voice International Magazine” in his declaration believed that the summit was quite overdue and pray that this will not be a one-off thing. He stated that back home the media has been turned into an avenue of gossips and jokes and urged all media participants present, to be honest, and do their jobs with a sense of direction. Pastor Elvis made it very clear that objectivity is 50
www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com
one of the main responsibility of the media anywhere in the world. Both the government and NIDO should be ready to take up criticism from diaspora media in areas they are not pulling their weight. Chief Dr. Victor (Otunba) Njinmah in his view supports a media think-tank which should lobby the legislators and the Executive while pearling with the Judiciary. He also pointed out that as long as NIDO does not have voting rights, but seen as the hens that are laying the golden eggs, the Nigerian government will not take the Diaspora as represented by NIDOE very serious, but once they realize NIDO can influence political offices and outcome NIDO will be chased after. He pointed out that the politicians will not give this free and NIDO must fight for this. Contributing, NIDO Chair from the Netherlands drew participants’ attention to the diaspora Bond which the Minister of Finance said will start from this year, he pointed out that as important as this is, the Diaspora community seems to have little or no input. He urged NIDOE and the media to put such questions on public debate and to identify such issues and lapses as focus areas of NIDOE-Media partnership. Femi Awoniyi quickly added that there is no way the diaspora board can be constituted successfully without NIDOE been involved in the process and urged participating media to highlight such anomalies. NIDO Portugal Chair added that NIDO should collaborate more with Nigeria media and carry out social charity activities which will automatically attract the media attention. He commended the Chairman and the Executive council for the great initiative. Apostle Helen of Voice Radio Netherlands in her contribution express her support to the issues raised by her media colleagues and suggested that there should be constant interview by the BOT and Diaspora stakeholders and that such interviews should be allowed to go viral on all social media including YouTube. She advocated keeping NIDO and national issues 247 on airwaves. Mr. Ikenna Ugwu, the former General Secretary, based in Rome, Italy in his opinion believes that NIDOE does not get the kind of attention it should be getting both from media and the Nigerian government. He urged that NIDOE leveraging on the new-found relationship with the media should put its priorities in place and react within a record time on national issues. Madam Clemet, the NIDOE IT Director from UK in her contributions asked if the Media and by extension NIDO will be ready to deal with controversial issues or shy away from them? She urged the media to sell NIDO as a non-political but as unifying point for the Diaspora community. Mr. Kevin Uguru, CEO of Kevin Media Digital said NIDO objectives and it’s strategies should be able to challenge western media and others on fake news. Sam Asoluka the Publisher/Editor-In-Chief of THE AMBASSADOR MAGAZINE in London pointed out the need to take the peculiarities of NIDO country specifics into consideration and Jermaine Sanwoolu, Chief Executive Officer at Diaspora PR suggested the need to develop a message or Diaspora media slogan for the NIDO-Media transformation and Mr. Emmanuel Ewhrax from TELL NIGERIANS from Swiss suggested immediate sharing of NIDOE information within the media group for maximun impact. The summit concluded the need for a NIDO-Think Tank Group, NIDO statement, slogan, country-specific issues, NIDO-Apps. The Media group pledge to support various NIDOE initiatives and the official communique will follow shortly. The Vice Chairman NIDOE, Engr. Cornelius Obot, thanked the media group for committing to partner with NIDOE and called this a historic beginning. He promised to work with the Chairman and the Board to provide the needed content. Rwanda tourism gets top billing in Dutch fair By: James Karuhanga The ongoing Dutch tourism fair, Vakantiebeurs 2017, has raised Rwanda’s tourism potential as major Dutch tour companies pick an interest. It is the eighth time Rwanda is showcasing its tourist attractions at the largest tourism exhibition in Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg) that was held in Utrecht at the beginning of the year. “What we notice this year at the Vakantiebeurs, contrary to last year, is that a couple of major Dutch tour companies have started selling complete tours (with itineraries to all attractions) to Rwanda,” Robert Kayinamura, First Counsellor at the Rwandan Embassy at The Hague, told the press during the exhibition.
“In addition, companies such as Untamed Travel, a highend tour company, are working on plans to send their best travel agents to Rwanda for an educational trip”. According to Kayinamura, awareness of Rwanda as a tourism destination has increased. “The questions from visitors have changed from; ‘is it safe?’ to ‘what can I do when I get there?” Rwanda is among the 160 countries that participated at the Vakantiebeurs, which attracts more than 125,000 visitors. The Rwanda Development Board (RDB), the Embassy of Rwanda in The Hague, Amahoro Tours, Mountain Gorilla Safaris, Wildlife Tours Rwanda, Mercator Assistance and the African Parks Foundation were represented at the Rwanda stand during the six-day event. This year’s edition of Rwanda at Vakantiebeurs is about discovering “Remarkable Rwanda” and it is also all about Rwandan coffee and tea. It was not only about the special flavours and how it tastes, Kayinamura said, but also the important stories and the people behind the Rwandan coffee. The Rwandan tourism circuit has been getting rave reviews from various travel experts.
Both Bloomberg and CNN voted Rwanda among the 17 best destinations of choice last year. San Francisco Chronicle placed it among the top ten in the world. To crown the fair, Rwanda’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, Jean Pierre Karabaranga, invited Mayor Van Zanen of Utrecht, Dutch tourism professionals and travel media to a RwandaFull Reception. According to the embassy, tour operators like Jambo Safari Club, Untamed Travelling and AV Tours & Safari are selling a variety of Rwanda round trips and the overall experience is that the tour operators are satisfied as they have seen an increase in numbers. The 22 percent increase in arrivals from the Netherlands in 2015 and 2016 is likely to continue in 2017. Davidson Mugisha, of Wildlife Tours Rwanda, one of the local tour operators participating in the exhibition, told the press that the benefit from participation does not only go to his company. “It is important for Rwanda and the continent in general because we showcase Africa too. Regarding Rwanda, our participation helps give confidence to the people we interact with while here. We give them facts about our country and its tourism potential, he said. “It is about confidence building because when they see us and we speak to them, they get it all from the horse’s mouth. In terms of business too, the numbers are good. The return on investment is high”. An internationally renowned magazine Condé Nast Traveler named Rwanda as the second best travel destination in Africa in 2017. The American luxury and travel magazine ranked Rwanda 14th globally and one of two African countries in Africa. The other country is Zimbabwe. In its ranking, the publication noted that Rwanda’s tourism is enjoying an upward trajectory for the past decade and is “of one of the most anticipated hotel openings on the continent.” For more information, you can email them at editorial@newtimes.co.rw

SPORTS:
FIFA approves new World Cup format for 48 countries.
The FIFA Council has unanimously decided in favour of expanding the FIFA World Cup to a 48-team competition as from the 2026 edition. World football’s supervisory and strategic body held its third meeting at the Home of FIFA in Zurich on 9th and 10th January, and decided on a new tournament format with the 48 national teams split into 16 groups of three. The top two teams from each group will then advance to a 32-team knockout stage. The new 48-team competition format has been drawn up in such a way that there is no reduction in the overall number of rest days and a guaranteed maximum of seven matches for the teams reaching the final, while the current 32-day tournament duration is kept, so as not to increase the length of time for which clubs have to release their players. The decision was taken following a thorough analysis, based on a report that included four different format options. The study took into account such factors as sporting balance, competition quality, impact on football development,

infrastructure, projections on financial position and the consequences for event delivery. Over the course of its next meetings, the FIFA Council is set to discuss further details regarding the competition, including the slot allocation per confederation. At its most recent meeting in October 2016, the FIFA Council had already discussed the scenarios to expand the competition format of the FIFA World Cup. By then, it had also defined a set of principles for countries to bid for the right to host the 2026 edition – a process that is currently scheduled to culminate in May 2020. The first day of the FIFA Council meeting saw the members split into five working groups dedicated to specific themes: women’s football, technical development, competitions, commercial matters and legal and corporate structures. On 10th January, as well as deciding on the expanded format, the Council agreed on a set of key dates related to the 2018 FIFA World Cup: · 14th May 2018: Deadline for participating member associations to release a list of 30 players; · 20 May 2018: Recommended final day of club competitions, with the exception of the UEFA Champions League final. Special exemptions may only be granted by the FIFA Council; · 21-27 May 2018: Official rest period to be respected by clubs and participating member associations; · 28 May 2018: Start of the release period for all participating member associations; · 4 June 2018: Submission of final list of 23 players. The Council also approved the early adoption of the IFRS15 standard in FIFA’s financial reports. Furthermore, as part of the ongoing consultation process, the composition of the new committees has been decided and will be communicated once the respective members have been informed. The next meeting of the FIFA Council is scheduled to be held in Manama, Bahrain, on 9th May 2017 ahead of the 67th FIFA Congress.
