EDITORIAL
NIGERIA: THINGS HAVE TRULY FALLEN APART “Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold: mere anarchy is loosed upon the world...” {The Second Coming’ by W.B.Yeats @ 1919} The maxim, ‘no news is good news’ has in the course of the past two years, attained the status of fact in Nigeria. Whenever there is a news item on Nigeria in the global news media, it is either the extremist Islamist terror outfit, Boko Haram has staged yet another fatal attack in Nigeria’s north-eastern region leading to the death of innumerable persons or that a suicide bomber has blown him/ herself up, taking some innocent bystanders to an early death; or that militants in the ever restive oil-rich Niger Delta region have blown up one oil pipeline or abducted some expatriate staff of oil producing companies; or the ever aggressive Fulani Herdsmen/militia have struck at yet another village in Nigeria’s middle belt region in what is now realized as systematic acts of ethnic cleansing; or one of several separatist ethnocentric groups, such as the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB)/ Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in the south-east region, the Republic of the Niger Delta (RONDEL) in the south-south region, the Odua People’s Congress (OPC) in the western region and the Arewa Youths (AY) in the north-central region, all threatening to secede from Nigeria or issuing quit notices to members of other ethnic groups to evacuate from their respective regions. When there appears to be a pause in news of extreme terror and physical violence, a tirade of fiscal violence which further deepens the poverty of the Nigerian population overwhelms news coverage. Its either millions of US Dollars stashed away in some unwholesome place (such as burial grounds, septic tanks or in abandoned buildings) surfaces with no one coming forward to claim ownership; or the entire public sector workers in a given state are being owed several months salaries, while thousands of ‘ghost-workers’ {names which receive salaries but are really non-existent} get continually unearthed without any efforts to recover monies paid to ghosts nor prosecute those who received these salaries on behalf of the ‘ghostworkers’; or entire budgetary allocations of government agencies get carted away be those charged with the peoples welfare. Agreed, Nigeria had never been an El-Dorado. Like most mineralrich emerging states, divisions along ethno-religious lines, being governed by kleptocrats and prevailing endemic corruption served to impede any real prospects of sustainable national development. Yet the level of depreciation and degradation in national and human life, expectations and prospects has sharply declined in the course of the past 2 years, has been most astonishing. From being the largest and fastest growing economy in Sub Sahara Africa in year 2014, a choice destination for Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), Nigeria has plummeted to Cause of the Sharp fall: Conscious of the multi-ethnic and multireligious composition of Nigeria, past rulers of the country had gone to great lengths to ensure some semblance of equity and balance in their appointments, allocation of national revenue and resources and showing respect for the various ethnicities and religious groups in Nigeria – thus creating a semblance of equilibrium and unity. The emergence of Muhammadu Buhari altered this delicate balance. The hasty descent begun on the 29th May, 2015 with the swearing in into office as President of Nigeria of a man of known extremist Islamic disposition who had severally committed himself to ensuring that the Islamic law principles, the Shari’a, was implemented all across 4

Nigeria and who seems more intent to promote nepotism and ethnic preferences far and above any pretence at national cohesion and unity. The insensitivity to the yearnings of the various ethnic groups which the Buhari regime perceived as ‘opposition groups’, gave rise to heightened agitation for self-actualization and disintegration from Nigeria. Barrister Eze Eluchie The component ethnicities of Contributing Editor the Nigerian federation who felt disrespected, unwelcome and insulted by several statements, nature of appointments made and general mannerism of the new President naturally felt they would be better off on their own than by being subservient citizens in a country that should ordinarily be theirs. The agitations for self-determination and splitting from the Nigerian federation are gathering momentum across various regions of Nigeria. A combination of the following factors: 1). the proliferation of arms in the West African region, 2). seizure of several container loads of illicitly imported arms at various ports in Nigeria – raising the prospect that many other containers had surreptitiously been smuggled in, 3). extremely high unemployment rate amongst Nigerian youths, and 4). the festering violent agitations by Boko Haram, Fulani Herdsmen and some elements among the Niger Delta youths; exposes the fact that Nigeria in perched on a very precarious position, akin to being atop a ticking time bomb which can blow-up at any moment. A way out of the mess: there is need to, as a matter of utmost urgency, for the constituent peoples of the Nigerian federation to dialogue over the avalanche of perceived and or real issues of marginalization, injustice and inequity which continue to fan the embers of discord amongst the peoples of Nigeria. Considering the fact that the very coming into existence of Nigeria as a single entity was by fiat from erstwhile colonial overlords, Great Britain; that the present structure of the Nigerian state into 36 States and 774 Local Government Areas; and the composition of the State and National Assemblies are all factors causing disaffection, such a dialogue process must be sovereign with broad scope and powers to inquire into all and everything surrounding the Nigerian state including but not restricted to its structure and continued existence. In the event that such dialogue process cannot be organized internally by Nigerians, it would be advisable for such dialogue process to be supervised/moderated by external authorities such as the United nations or the African Union to ensure objective outcomes. Considering Nigeria’s projected population size of over 180 million, the prospect of the ongoing tension in Nigeria degenerating into full-scale conflict and the nightmarish scenario of its huge population streaming across international borders ad overwhelming neighbouring West African countries is too horrendous to be contemplated. It is therefore advised as a matter of utmost urgency, that a sovereign dialogue process of the various ethnic nationalities in Nigeria be convened to discuss on a path forward for the Nigerian state, to determine whether the country will continue to exist as one entity or as separate entities, and under what conditions such coexistence shall be based.

FEEDBACK
Clowns as Leaders!
This is a Beautiful Nation! A Nation where Clowns parade themselves as leaders. A Nation where only the poor, the downtrodden gets punish for and sometimes killed for petty theft while the rich, yes those who stole OUR COMMONWEALTH walk the streets free, insult our sensibilities and in most instances are honoured and celebrated! That is Nigeria, where the more you see the greater you are confused! We all clamored for Change, yes we did! However, if this is what Change is all about, then as a Nation we have yet been taken for yet another Circus Ride! It is a sad and worry situation. Our zealots Change Agents have yet again been swallowed and consumed by the same SINS OF THE FATHERS FROM ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER! There is God ooooh! Abiodun Adigun Lagos, Nigeria
The Saraki drama script being played out in Nigeria! “They all made it look as though there was some serious business going on. A huge knock on the door, the judge enters, everyone gets up, he bows, everybody bows, he sits down, everybody sits down, the judge appears in black suit, the lawyers appear in black suits, and all the ceremonies, protocols and rituals associated with such occasions are observed. But in the end, it turned out to be a joke, a huge joke, and a hollow ritual of comic tragedy which the trial of a President ought not to be.” - Ray Ekpu, 1986. That’s exactly what happened in the CCT trial of the Senate President, Olubukola Saraki. It was a real hollow ritual of a magnitude proportion. The outcome is a mockery of our criminal justice system and our common humanity. Looking forward to the day Evans, the kidnapper kingpin will be discharged and acquitted of all charges. By Abiodun Adigun | Lagos, Nigeria
Different strokes for similar crime in Nigeria
It’s fascinating to see everyone, both pro and anti-corruption activists unite over the verdict on Evans the great kidnapper. No one is talking about rule of law, ruin of law or even rule of lawlessness. Even lawyers who tutored us on rule of law are calling for his execution. No more sound prosecutors, nor the almighty legal Technicalities that washed the crimson red as white as snow. No more outcry about media trial and media sentencing, we are all united in one conscience knowing that such a criminal deserves to face justice , in fact justice is now defined in our own terms . But in all these, we must not forget that while Evans kidnapped tenths of victims, those who stole our commonwealth kidnapped millions and even the unborn. While Evans lived in opulence from the spoils of his crimes, those who looted public funds live like Arabian princes. Yes I agree Evans is guilty of murders and other heinous crimes and deserves death

but the looters of our nation are guilty of class cleansing and generational genocide and deserve even much worse. The question is why is our judgment discriminatory? Why do we hold different standards for crimes against our society? We must do some soul searching to rediscover who we really are. There is an urgent need to address this fundamental flaw in our society that threatens our civilization. We are evolving into a Hobbesian society where we will all turn to cannibals practically feeding on each other’s flesh. Personally I demand justice for all Evans victims and their families because we have to deter all those who still engage in such heinous crimes as the means of livelihood. In fact death penalty is ideal and I don’t think it’s too much to demand same for those who loot us to our graves and the judges that connive with them. By Oladipo Duyile Ibironke Abuja, Nigeria
Shocked at Saraki’s no guilty verdict
“I was shocked myself by the ruling, The amount of evidence amassed against him (Mr. Saraki) was considerable; so, I am surprised it was said no prima facie had been made against him. It’s shocking that’s all I can say.” “If you look at this case, the prosecution was very organized. Evidence was brought out very clearly. In fact, I would say mountains of evidence. So, nobody can blame poor prosecution in this case. So, what is the problem? A Nigerian factor? We don’t know,” said. Mr. Sagay. Remember I also said with the mountains of evidence against him, he may not escape justice. Professor Sagay Abuja, Nigeria.

Paying tribute to Bash Ali Bash Ali is to Nigeria and Africa as Legendary Mohammed Ali is to global boxing. From your profile, I believe you are not too young not to experience the between 80s and 90s when Bash Ali was doing his talks more inside the ring with devastating suckerpunches. Bash Ali’s boxing career passes through my own, sports journalist career. Outside the ring, he has helped many people to become something in their lives. A colleague of mine, followed to cover his WORLD TITLE fight in Germany around 1996. Through my colleague relocated to The Netherlands to be precise. Pastor Ndubuisi Elvis Iruh went on to establish notably the influential African oriented magazine, The Voice magazine which yours truly was privileged to be the pioneer Executive Editor in 1999. Bash Ali has truly contributed to advancement of boxing in Nigeria and I think he has not got a good share of his contribution to the sports. History story need to be documented for the future generation. By Tunde Oyekunle Oyeleke Barcelona, Spain

INTERVIEW
My goal is to get every woman gainfully employed in Ghana and beyond says Her Excellency, Rev. Dr. Naa Princess Asie Ocansey Her Excellency Rev. Dr Naa Princess Asie Ocansey need no introduction when it comes to her passion for women and girls in Ghana and in the world in general, as a woman she has proven herself to earn the respect and honour she enjoys today. She is in the forefront of creating a new legacy for the women to be recognized and given a place in society as well as opportunities at job place without them having to compromise their personalities as women. For years now, she has fought to bring the agenda of women to the global front both in her country of origin, Ghana or at the African Union level. Right now, she has put in place a program to create a job data base for women in Ghana to be trained and gainfully employed and she is preparing to model it for all African countries. In this exclusive interview with the Editor-in-Chief of The Voice magazine, Pastor Elvis Iruh, Her Excellency, Princess Ocansey opens up herself to our readers. She talks about her passion and drive and it is rewarding to have her with us on this special edition of The Voice magazine for July 2017. Enjoy her interview. TV: Princess Ocansey, you need no introduction to those who know you but for our international readers, kindly give us a short introduction of yourself? Princess Ocansey: I am Asie Kabuki Ocansey, a daughter of the King of Kings - Jehovah Adonai, a Princess from the Ocansey Royal Family of Ada, Ghana and mother of Fumi Serwa and John Sena. Professionally, I am a Diasporan Engineer, a graduate of Rutgers University- College of Engineering-New Jersey, USA - where I received a Bachelors Degree in Ceramic Engineering, and a Masters in Packaging Science and Engineering, with a Doctorate in Theology from CICA University - Canada, a Migration Specialist from the Canadian Institute, Philanthropist, Businesswoman, Transformation Coach, Cause songwriter, an Author, and having been once falsely accused of human trafficking, for which I was acquitted and discharged, I know the pain of injustice first hand, so I am a big warrior against all injustices especially against Africa - in the area of poverty, climate - concerning women, youth and babies. TV: You are a woman of great status but you have right now a project so dear to your heart in Ghana? Kindly tell us more about it? Princess Ocansey: The project is called, “SOSjobs4women Ghana Summit and Job fair” set for July 24, 2017 in Accra. It is an initiative of our NGO, Nekotech Center: Royal Academy for Peace and Development in partnership with the Ghana Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, headed by Hon. Ignatius Baffour Awuah and in collaboration with the Diasporan Relations Office of the Office of the President of Ghana, head10

ed by Mr. Akwasi Awua Ababio and in collaboration with our training partners - the Diasporan African Forum, headed by Her Excellency Dr. Erieka Bennett, Skill2Scale of the University of Calgary, Alberta, and other key partners in the US, Canada, Australia, EU/UK and Ghana. The major sponsor of the project is SOS Labour, Ghana’s first licensed and multiple award winning national and international job placement agency. The sosjobs4women project is focused on providing - workplace game changers- a new brand of excellent pre-trained, ideal working women to the world of work in Ghana and the diaspora. We are therefore “Jobsraising” (this is a new word I recently coined) for decent jobs globally as well as in Ghana for these pre-trained and vetted “ideal workers” trained to strive for 100% performance and attendance, 100% punctuality and productivity. As we help companies succeed and expand through ideal workers, more jobs will be created. We are not leaving any woman behind. We are jobsraising at all levels for our new virtual Jobs bank which was launched on June 17th 2017.
Princess Asie Ocansey
So far, the responses have been beyond our expectations! We have initiated a series of pre-summit and virtual job fair training programs for women from all over Ghana- with great results. We are in the process of partnering with companies in Ghana and worldwide interested in hiring our ideal workers”. Our target is to provide1, 000 ideal workers with jobs by July 24 as a beginning for our pilot. SOS Labour has provided us with 1000 job center jobs through the “one woman, one job center” campaign - encouraging women to be sos sub agents who earn good commissions as parttime or full time recruitment sub agents - when men travel. SOS laments that most of its job opportunities are for men- therefore now through SOSjobs4women- every time a man gets a job, an soswoman benefits! This is very exciting for us.
SOSJobs4Women to create more job opportunties for women in Ghana TV: What other type of business are you into? We are aware you run your own companies/organizations in Ghana? Princess Ocansey: Yes, we have an IPTV company, and several real estate investments my favorite being “SOR-SOR City Estates” under development soon to be the most affordable housing project in Ghana, which we are building as an off grid development. In Ghana, we have a power outage phenomenon called: “Dumsor”...”Dum” means “lights off ” and “sor” means “lights on”, because we undergo frequent power outages. The essence of “Sor-sor” city, is an off grid integrated power supply base using renewable energy - an oasis with zero power outages! We are currently working on a TV show: The Search for the Ideal Working Woman - a reality show and award scheme for ideal working women- which I will be hosting at the end of June for 13 weeks. TV: How easy is it to be a woman and leading companies/ organizations that most of your employees are men? Princess Ocansey: It has its challenges but I am used to it. As an Engineering student in the US, God prepared me well to operate in a male dominated world. The first day I walked into my physics orientation class at the Rutgers University College of Engineering, the guys immediately told me “hey! are you lost, this is engineering!” I looked at them and said: “No, I am not lost, excuse me, I need a front row seat!” I was the only black woman in that class with three other black guys in a class of 120 plus. It drives me to succeed. It makes me strive to do more to represent my gender well. It really does not bother me, though I am very sensitive in dealing with male employees by the grace of God. TV: You have chosen to fight the cause of the girl child and women generally. Why this choice and is there any disadvantage for the girl child in Ghana? Princess Ocansey: We need more women in these important fields, and having experienced being up there, alone many times, I am naturally driven to fight for girls and women. I remember
attending a Digital Divide Conference put on by the Bill Gates Foundation on the future of technology in Seattle WashingtonIndia, China and all the other continents were shown as getting on board the digital race, but Africa was dark. Again, I was the only African woman in the room with four other black men. This haunted me. At the end of the conference, I went to Mr. Bill Gates Senior and asked, so what happens now to the Africa and the African woman who already is behind? He told me, “ African Women, need to fight for Africa and African women, we can’t do it for you.” And he was right. I came back to Ghana with fire in my belly, a renewed fire to make sure we don’t fall behind in this technological race. We formed the Digital Women initiative and started free training for women and girls including, the physically challenged and kicked off a TV program encouraging girls to get online and to become computer literate. Next we saw that rural women and girls were at a mobility disadvantage. Whoever had a bike was “king”. Women walk for miles to school, the market and hospitals. One day, a woman came crying to me in the village whose child had died in her womb for two months, but she had no money to take a car to the nearest hospital which was 30 miles away! I cried with her- poverty is a wicked spirit- and arranged for our NGO to take over her bills. She would have lost her life because she could not afford the $8 cost to get to the free hospital. $8 for this she would have died! Think about it! This pushed me to start a bike riding clinic to teach girls and women how to ride bikes to give them much needed mobility - only to the anger of the men! We had to persuade the men that they would still be ‘king” and that this would free them. We brought over 4000 bikes to the community in partnership with Pedals for Progress USA and Johnson and Johnson of New Jersey, US. Now, we are training women nationally to break ties with poverty and to push for opportunities for earning by employment, entrepreneurship, entertainment or education- 4E. we throw out from the west. Not everything works for us.
TV: Last year, you were recognized in the Netherlands by the Voice Achievers award? How was the experience for you? Princess Ocansey: It was great! I was impressed with the event, it was well organised and there was such a spirit and labour of love with it. I also met like minded people and created connections to send some of our ministry trainings to Nigeria. TV: Do you think such awards can motivate people to do more for their society? Princess Ocansey: I applaud such awards. My award renewed my passion to work even harder. You know, we do not work for awards but when someone appreciates and honors your work, it is an incredible motivator to do more. Many times, I have thought about leaving, just then, someone shines light on your work, and it wipes away some of the tears and pains. It is always humbling and surely a shot in the arm to do more. We walk away in gratitude. TV: You are an advocate of Africans taking their own destiny in their hands? How can Africa achieve this objective?
This re-africanization will instantly create jobs and innovation across all sectors. When we start to put Africa and Africans first, great strides will be made. In addition we must wage a war against corruption and be intolerant of corrupt leadership.
First we need what I term “Appropriate Education”. I think the major part of our problem is that we have received inappropriate education in many ways. We allowed the west to cut and paste their culture and inappropriate norms on us, which was to their marketing
benefit. Why should my brother wear an imported wool suit, a tie and long sleeve shirt in 95 deg weather and them have to increase his electricity bill by buying an air conditioner? Think about it, why? Africa’s first education should focus on what I call the “re- africanization of Africans.” ( This is the first time I am using the term in print.) Then we can restructure what we copy and what 12
www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com
Each African nation must create platforms for diasporan active participation in its development agenda. In Ghana, Diasporans provide $3billion a year in remittances. This can be boosted further. Africans must be encouraged to go into entrepreneurship and to think outside the box in terms of “how to put food on the table legally”. Many graduates are waiting for jobs in their fields of study. No! Transfer your skills! Be a productive wage earner now! Go and start something. Earn! TV: Tell us about your initiatives for Ghana and Africa in general? Princess Ocansey: Jobs. Peace. Development. Our agenda is Peace and Development through job creation working hand and hand with the Governments. We have plans to take the SOSjobs4women to all African countries whose Governments invite us. We are focused on making sure families can put food on the table and promoting re-africanization for business development- re awakening our own textiles and pharmaceuticals and Agric. TV: How can you help to empower more women in this time we live in where many young girls are looking for easy way out of economic problems? Princess Ocansey: We are working on a TV program to drive our messages in social media and multimedia platforms to reach women for them to see other role models making it the right way. We are creating networks and mentoring programs to engage and empower on a short and long term basis. We hope to make the summit and jobfair an annual event and using IPTV we can engage them easily to empower them.
TV: You are a projector of African unity and you emphasize that without unity we cannot accomplish more. How do we achieve this unity within the global world we live in? Princess Ocansey: Psalm 133 v 1 says, how sweet and how pleasant it is when breathren dwell together in unity. It says in v 3 that, that is where God commands His blessings. We just celebrated African Union Day, we pray for African Leaders to plan and set interdependent developmental agendas - as the late President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Late President Ghadaffi were trying to do. We must not always look first to the West. We must create a system which looks inward first. Through unity 1+1 can get us 3 or even 4- not 2! This is why there is USA, EU, one big China, one big India- it is all a game of numbers! Real Unity, with a unified currency, makes for an attractive single African market. We need to be borderless economically to our own benefit to be more competitive globally. So many decades later, why are we still maintaining the colonial walls erected to divide and conquer us? At least, we can rise above the colonial walls socially and economically.
Our youth and Diasporans must be fully engaged in the process to truly unify Africa. The top of the African Agenda must be unity- that will open the doors to our many treasures because we are too rich to be poor! TV: What should we expect more from Princess Ocansey in 2017 which is half way already? Princess Ocansey: JOBS! JOBS!! JOBS!!! This will be at the core of everything we do in 2017. I will be knocking on doors begging for jobs for our women especially, our rural women everywhere. Once families have jobs, they will be able to put food on the table and peace will prevail everywhere. TV: Your country has a new government on the platform of change, what do you expect to see from the new government of Ghana Princess Ocansey: We are pleased for the peaceful hand over from the previous to the new Government. We expect to see continued peace, more development outside of the capital through the one district one factory project. We are all hoping to see an end to “ Dumsor”- the power outages- as the energy component will be critical in running these factories.
It is our prayer that this Government will make SorSor a reality! TV: As a follow up, do you think this government has what it takes to deliver change to Ghanaians? Princess Ocansey: Absolutely! This is the Government that has already started delivering change to Ghanaians. They have already started the process of creating an enabling environment to lay the foundation for meaningful change. These are seasoned professionals and politicians who are very open to working hand in hand with the private sector to bring change. SOSjobs4women Ghana is enjoying an unprecedented support of this Government. Change will happen faster if all citizens join hands with the Government to effect rapid change. I trust we have the right team with a great Captain. TV: Lastly, do you have any word of encouragement to the Voice magazine team and its award organization? Princess Ocansey: Indeed, I must thank Marvin Iruh - Slim Kuzzy, a unique rapper destined to soon take the world by storm - for this crucial introduction to the Voice magazine. I wish to let you know that you have impacted us through the Humanitarian Award presented to me. I could see the amount of work you have put into the project, but more importantly the special love and care among your team members. To the Award organization, I say, “ Keep going, you are changing the world!” By the way, your awards are one of the most beautifully designed! Like Paul in Galatians 1 v 21: God receives praise daily, through your great work and good deeds! Thank you and God bless you. PASSIONATE APPEAL FOR HELP Help people living with HIV in Batwa, Burundi says Elaine Becks Nininahazwe In the Netherlands, much has been done and achieved in the
Eliane Becks-Nininahazwe
area of testing and treatment of HIV Aids. Most people with HIV are familiar with their status and they receive the right medications needed to live. With a good treatment, it is easier to live with HIV. How different is it in Burundi. Still, 3,000 people die every year of an HIV/Aids infections. Often people do not even know how to prevent the transmission of the virus, or do not know they live with the virus. In addition, they often do not know that good treatment is possible, which will allow you to live longer and healthier. Although the situation in some parts of Burundi has slowly improved through good information and access to medication but there are still groups in Burundi that have an increased risk of HIV infections because of lack of information at this period and not access to treatment. Such group is the Batwa people of Burundi, even in some places they are called the forgotten people. The Batwa, a group of pygmies, they have lived long in isolation in Burundi’s rainforests. Therefore many of them are illiterates and do not have the knowledge to protect themselves from HIV/Aids and do not know that it is vital to seek timely help now. I have happily experienced how important it is to be treated in a timely manner. Because of proper information and medication, I am healthy and I can lead a normal life. That’s what you all do? And we can extend that to these people. In the Netherlands, I already give active information about my living with HIV and now I asked for your support to help me reach this group of people (40,000 Batwa in Burundi).
In October 2017, I will go to Burundi to run along with the Batwa campaign and bring HIV/Aids to the attention of the Batwa people in Burundi, thus launching an information campaign to change their lives and attitude. In order to kick start this campaign; I’m looking for people or organizations who want to help me to enable me to make this trip to Burundi. My goal is to collect a total of at least 2,000 euros to cater for my flight, accommodation and upkeep during my stay over there for this campaign. You can offer me a flight ticket and the payment of my accommodation costs. Help me in any way possible, nothing is too little to support a campaign today. Help me to give a voice and hope to the Batwa people. Help sponsor to my trip. Any amount can be transferred to: E Becks Nininahazwe NL05 SNSB 8828 3648 58 Please indicate your name and if possible send me an email so I could have you on my contact list and keep you posted on my progress when I am in Burundi. During my trip, I will report on my findings via various social media. If you are interested in following my trip, please send me a message at indonongo@hotmail.com. If you have any questions about my campaign for the Batwa or ideas to enrich this venture, I would like to hear from you. Thank you for your love and compassion. And if you want to know me better, for example, the work I have in the Netherlands around HIV/Aids. Maya Nassar is a well-established Lebanese leader in fitness, wellbeing and lifestyle. A certified sports nutritionist and personal trainer, she’s been endorsed as an athlete by the Lebanese Ministry of Youth and Sports and is the first Arab female to be endorsed by the government to compete in body building and bikini fitness modeling. Maya has developed a large and loyal following with her Start Living Right mission, where she has used her platform to share her experiences of fitness and nutrition and through this has helped and encouraged others to reach the best shape of their lives. She has a Dutch/ Nigeria connection. She speaks to The Voice magazine in this exclusive interview.......... TV: Maya, you need no introduction to those who know you but for our international readers, kindly give us a short introduction of yourself? Maya: Very nice to meet you! I am certified in sports nutrition and personal training. I previously used to be overweight and unhealthy and I changed my life around through fitness. I am the only government endorsed athlete to compete in international bikini fitness competitions and I have won 6 trophies in total. I am also the host of a sports TV show on MTV Lebanon. TV: You are a woman of great status but you have right now a project so dear to your heart? Kindly tell us more about it? Maya: At the moment, I have recently opened up my own gym! This has been a long term goal of mine and it is my passion to help other people live a healthy lifestyle. When I loss weight, I started a 18

website and mobile application called Start Living Right and posted diet plans, exercise programs and tons of information and advice for free. After my online platform did really well, I opened my gym and named it after the platform and this is how “Start Living Right Gym” came to life. My gym offers personal training, diet plans, physiotherapy and classes. TV: What other type of business are you into? We are aware you run your own companies/organizations? Maya: I am into helping others and I am a member of an animal welfare NGO in Lebanon. I will also soon be launching a project in my gym to help educate underprivileged women train for free and learn how to be fit and healthy. My goal is also to expand my gym and open in several other countries, hopefully one day in Nigeria!
TV: How easy to be a woman and leading sports therapy coming from Lebanon/Dutch background? Maya: It is an interesting mix. In Holland, they are way more advanced in fitness and more Dutch women are into training and weight lifting. In Lebanon, there are still many misconceptions and I believe this part of the world is behind in fitness. This is where I use my Dutch connections to gain more knowledge and implement what I have learnt it into the Lebanese society. For example, fitness competitions in Holland exist for women but do not exist in Lebanon. Women in Lebanon still believe that weightlifting is for men only and that they may become bulky or masculine from lifting weights, and this is where I am correcting such misconceptions. TV: You have chosen to pass on your skills and training to others but why the interest in Africans? Maya: I love Africa! I grew up in Nigeria and I have a Ghanaian passport. I have many African friends and consider Nigeria home. It is my passion to share my knowledge with others and because Africa is so dear to my heart, I want to help all Africans benefit from my online platform.
society will say. TV: You have participated in modelling shows and international competitions, how do they receive you back in Lebanon or the Dutch society? Maya: My competitions have given me amazing media exposure. After competing in my second show, I approached the minister of sports to endorse my competition and give me permission to represent Lebanon internationally. This endorsement has gotten me interviews all over the media and helped me to reach out and help many other people. I have also received lots of criticism, but when you become a public figure it is only natural that you are going to get criticized. TV: Reading your profile, you have lived in Nigeria? Where and when? And how did you come to Nigeria? Maya: My father and family work in Nigeria. I lived there for ten years as a child and I have the happiest memories of childhood. My family still work there and I come back and visit every now and then. TV: What was your experience in Nigeria? Do you still have contact with Nigeria or any other Africa country? Maya: I consider Nigeria to be home. It was always be dear to my heart and the country I grew up in and formed the most amazing friends. Yes, I still have contact with Nigerians and I am especially fond of the delicious food there. TV: Why this choice TV: Tell us about your business and is there any interests and how would this be of disadvantage for you interest to Africans? as a lady to do this type Maya: I hope one day to open of profession coming my gym in Nigeria and use my from a conservative connections there to contribute to background? the Nigerian fitness community. Maya: There is I can also help Nigerians with definitely a challenge online diet and exercise programs competing in fitness if they send me an email through competitions living in my website. If my gym does well a conservative part of in Nigeria, it would then be a goal the world. However, to expand throughout Africa. Maya in her training session this is where I have TV: How can you help to empower used these challenges more women particularly African to help myself grow stronger and develop a thick skin not women to take sports and exercise in this time we live in to care about criticism or what others may say about what where many young girls are looking for easy way out? I do. On the other hand, my competitions have also helped to inspire and empower other women to become independent Continued on Page 20 and pursue their personal goals without the fear of what

Continued from Page 19 Maya: I would tell these girls to establish an emotional connection to their goals and to think of the benefits of training and living a healthy lifestyle. For example, I used to be someone very unhealthy and suffered as a result of it. I had zero self confidence, healthy problems and was very unhappy with my body. Putting in hard work not only transformed my body, but my life too. These girls need to ask themselves why they want to become fit and healthy and what this will mean for them once they reach their fitness goals. Once they form an emotional bond to their goals, they will then find it harder to give up and will stay motivated. I always say there is no substitute to hard work. There are no magic pills. Looking for the easy way out will never give you results and if you want to reach your goals, then you need to get up and work for it. TV: Is there any danger associated with body building particularly among women? Maya: Absolutely not! Bodybuilding and lifting weights helps to shape and tone a woman’s body and burns fat. It also boosts the metabolism and immune system and prevents diseases. There is only a danger if a woman does not lift weights with the correct form and causes injuries, or if she chooses to abuse bodybuilding and takes steroids and drugs. TV: What should we expect more from Maya in 2017 which is nearly half way? Maya: I am currently 6 months pregnant and will be giving birth by the end of September. I will also be working very hard
on my gym and hope to launch a new online website where I will offer more diet and training tips. A visit to Nigeria is also planned! TV: Congratulations on your expectancy Maya: Thank you. TV: Lastly, do you have any word of encouragement to our readers? Maya: My words of encouragement is that anyone can reach a challenging goal, no matter how difficult it may seem. You are never too unfit, too overweight or too old to get started with your fitness journey. See fitness as a challenge against yourself and something that will serve you in the long run and improve your health and well-being. If anyone needs any tips or support, they can contact me via www.startlivingright. net or download my free mobile app by searching for “starltivingright” in their smartphone stores and I am always ready to assist. If there is any additional information, kindly do please get in touch with me. TV: Thank you for this interview and for your time. Maya: Thank you. I have no problem with Nnamdi Kanu or held any secret meeting with El Rufai says Chief Peter Obi my stand and not this bias and dangerous comments by people” What value does Kanu detention add to my life? He asked. Absolutely nothing, I have made my stand clear and known on the issue of Biafra and it is in the public domain so I am not bothered about this negative and cheap propaganda against my person. He stated categorically he has not visited El Rufai since he became of Governor of Kaduna State or hold any secret meeting with him concerning the Igbo people. “There is no basis for such a meeting or discussion so the article is nonsensical and no truth whatsoever in it. Peter Obi called on those using the social media to be careful of what they read and belief as he does not have a facebook or whatsapp so he does not communicate through those medium to his audience. He thanked the Voice magazine for the effort to make contact with him and seek clarification before any publication on the allegation made against his person. “I wish other media will emulate this type of media behavior rather than rushing into republishing unverified articles published on social media. Mr. Peter Obi: Former Governor of Anambra State In recent days, our publication The Voice magazine have been bombarded with all sort of mails alleging that former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Peter Obi has held secret meeting with Governor of Kaduna State, El Rufai and some other Northern leaders on the agenda to have Nnamdi Kanu returned to prison. Early this morning, our Editor-in-Chief, Pastor Elvis Iruh spoke to Peter Obi on telephone on his return to Nigeria from Nantes, France where he has gone to attend a conference. The fact is that Peter Obi was actually not in the country as of the time they purported that he was holding a meeting with Kaduna State Governor and other Northern leaders. Peter Obi said on telephone chat, “I laugh at these jokers because they don’t even know anything about me or following me. I was out of the country while they claimed I was having a meeting. I have not followed the news trend because I just arrived back this morning. They should go and read the news and follow the developments, I was among the first set of people who demanded unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu by the government. My statements are all over the media for those who are interested on knowing Nnamdi Kanu: Leading the agitation for Biafra

Profile: COMRADE SUNNY OFEHE: The man on mission My name is Comrade Sunny Ofehe, I am an environmental and human rights activist from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I am married to a Nigerian with four children. I played an active role in mobilizing fellow students to demonstrate against the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential election by the then Military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. I fled Nigeria in 1995 in the wake of the agitation for the June 12th annulled Presidential election and the hanging of Ken Saro Wiwa and the 8 Ogoni activists. I arrived Amsterdam Schiphol airport 27th November 1995 and sought political asylum. My arrival in Amsterdam, the capital of The Netherlands and headquarter of the oil giant company Shell was a clear coincidence. My mother sold our family home in Benin City to raise the funds for my travel and I had to travel through Kano with KLM as the major commercial airline. This was how Amsterdam became my city of destination. I arrived with $5 dollars in my pocket. The killing of the 9 Ogoni activist became a national debate in The Netherlands with worldwide protests calling on the world to boycott Shell and expel the company out of Nigeria. Many Dutch concerned citizens wanted to hear from me first hand, the true situation in Nigeria. My advocacy for the Niger Delta region began from there and I was being invited to several events and conferences. In 2005, I founded the NGO called Hope for Niger Delta Campaign with headquarter in Rotterdam and I am currently the Executive Director. This NGO was very much involved in advocacy and the organization of events and awareness campaign. In September 2008, I began series of documentary films on the Niger Delta showcasing the untold stories of the region and using it to campaign for peace. I visited the camp of the popular militant group called the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) along with 3 US and 1 Dutch team in December 2008 and called for a peaceful process to resolving the Niger Delta issues. https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJSVFnJruxM. The process of peace has since been established by the Nigerian government through the granting of the Presidential Amnesty to all Niger Delta Militants.

In 2009, I was invited by the acting President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as part of my consultation to finding an enduring solution to the perennial problems of the Niger Delta. https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehYyGvZQ-3k In the same period, I addressed the Ad-Hoc Committee on the Niger Delta at the Nigeria House of Representative and eventual invited 15 Honorable Members of the Committee led by Hon. Abdul Ningi to the Netherlands and the European Union Parliament and Commission in Brussels, Belgium. On October 4th 2007, assailants suspected to be hired assassins invaded my family house in Benin-City and strangled my 60-year-old mother to death. My late mother was buried this year February 2017 after almost 10 years. In the same year I was stopped by the Nigerian DSS at the airport and was interrogated several times over my activities and criticism of multinational and government policies around the world. In 2009, I made a daring trip to discover the circumstances behind the illegal oil refineries https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=HUi1eT3d58M The outcome of my documentary recommended the current modular refineries backed by the Nigerian government as the only solution to the problems. My investigation revealed almost 4,000 illegal oil refinery sites scattered around the Niger Delta region. This was going to be very difficult to curtail. Today, the current government has adopted it as a policy!
In 2010, HNDC organized the first ever international conference on Peace in the Niger Delta in The Hague, The Netherlands. The conference brought together experts and policy makers to design a blue print for peace in the region. In 2010, I facilitated the visit of the Dutch Member of Parliament to the Niger Delta region to experience the impact of gas flaring on the health of the ordinary people. https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6gEc-M8-KI We also visited a community devoid by illegal oil bunkering. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qd_Csh0k9iQ The visit prompted the Parliamentarians to summon Shell to a Parliamentary Hearing in The Hague in 2011. I was invited to speak at the hearing which questioned Shell inability to follow international standard in their Niger Delta operations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVgduC6UXyg Eleven days after this hearing, more than 35 Dutch police stormed my house and arrested me on trump up charges and I was detained for two weeks. The case lead on for more than three years until several charges which included terrorism and human smuggling was dropped. The arrest was widely published in major dailies around the world. Kindly see Google for details https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yr--sJmEF6Q (Dutch but I spoke in English) In 2012, I facilitated the visit of the S.A. to President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta Hon. Kingsley Kuku to the Paris Elysee Palace (Seat of French Government) and to address the Institute of French Foreign Relations IFFRI (A French foreign Relations Think tank). In Brussels, Belgium he addressed some members of the European Parliament. In 2013, I facilitated a Round Table discussion on the role of major European oil companies’ role in the Niger Delta at the European Parliament in Brussels. We called on the European MPs to visit the region. They accepted but unfortunately couldn’t secure any travel insurance. The trip was called off in the last minute. In 2014, I presented the Ogoni people’s case to the 9th Session of United Nation conference on Minority Issues in Geneva, Switzerland. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ELibnvpHmWY Early this year, I was invited by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to advice the Dutch on their policy plans towards Nigeria in the next 4 years. This is just a summary of some of the major activities that I have been involved in in the last years. It is worth noting that time and space will not permit me to mention all of the activities and engagement that I have embarked upon to ensure a better Niger Delta region. However, for reference purposes I will refer you to make research by typing my names of Google, Facebook, YouTube and other related social media portals.

More elections slated for 2017 in Africa Things to watch out for......
President Paul Kagame in the race again 2017 in so many ways is already interesting as we have seen some elections in Africa and we are expecting more within the remaining six months of the year. More African countries are pursuing the democratic path by conducting presidential, legislative and municipal elections. Some are electing law makers and legislators thereby giving more power to the people. In Somalia, they held an historical elections by voting for a new president on January 24th this year; Somalia’s new President is Mohamed Abdullahi, taking over from former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and defeating a score of dozens of candidates that ivy for the presidency. After that we have some key elections coming up later in the year and we would give you a rundown of the countries and possible candidates for the top job. Rwanda is expected to go to the polls on 4th August 2017 if all goes according to plan and it is obvious that the incumbent; President Paul Kagame will be seeking for a third term after the approval of his political party to continue in office, it will be a new seven-year term since winning the country’s second election in 2010 with 93% of the vote. President Kagame is dubbed as the “global elite’s favourite strongman” and the ‘darling tyrant’. President Kagame has won himself to the heart of his people no matter what anybody else say about his administration and style of governance, it is making life better for Rwandese. He has developed his media through his sleek website and over 1.5 million Twitter followers to propagate his message of progress and development. President Kagame is also credited with transforming the landlocked nation’s economic development, boosting youth employment and trade, reducing poverty and advocating for technology as a tool for prosperity. Yet, the country’s transformation under Kagame has come with a catch. Kagame is accused of muzzling the press, restricting free speech, and silencing dissidents and in some cases, even allegedly assassinating opponents and most of them has fled to Uganda and South Africa. But the upcoming election will point more to the future of
Rwanda than to its troubled past. In 2015, a constitutional amendment allowed President Paul Kagame to run for this new term and two more five-year terms after that, meaning that he could stay in power till 2034. The controversial move was criticized by many in the international community and questioned whether Kagame was even interested in fostering a new generation of leaders to take on the mantle of leadership. “I don’t think that what we need is an eternal leader,” Kagame said when he announce his candidacy early last year. And now in 2017, he has all in place to see him reelected by the people despite the critics that he doesn’t count on him giving the youth a chance in the country, he said the country is still under construction for the future. KENYAN ELECTIONS. Kenyan elections is probably the hottest in Africa this year and the reason is not far fetched; the last two elections in the country has been characterized by accusations of voting rigging and violence. Everything points towards a similar direction again this year as it seem no lesson had been learnt from the previous two elections. The protagonist are the same old folks divided into two camps. The elections is slated for 8th August 2017 as Kenyans will go to the polls to elect almost 1900 public office holders which includes the president, senators, county governors, members of the national and county assemblies, and women county representatives. This is yet another high-stakes election, which is tilted in favor of incumbent president Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto. The two, however, will go into election facing an energized opposition who have used the administration failings to unite the country and fight corruption as a rallying point to have them voted out of power.

elections. In Angola, the leader of the winning party automatically becomes the President so it is an indirect way of endorsing Mr. Lourenco for the President. Angola still being a dominantly a one party state ruled by Dos Santos and his family, who have amassed wealth and power over the last four decades. Yet, the fourth elections in the country since it gained independence from Portugal in 1975, come at a time when the country has been hit by the slump in global crude prices, diminishing its foreign exchange revenues. The 2017 elections will test the maturity of Angola’s democracy and if successful, confer a measure of legitimacy on its government but we all wait to see if opposition will emerge stronger with Dos Santos off the scene. Continued on Page 42
Opposition Leader Raila Odinga of Kenya Since President Kenyatta came to power in 2013, the country has been bedeviled with deadly terrorist attacks, teachers’ strikes, nurses and doctor strikes; failing back system; and several corruption scandals that have drained tens of millions of dollars from government coffers. Many think the President is too soft on fighting corruption because many of those involved are his allies or political associates. Also high profile killings yet unresolved by government agencies because there are allegations of government involvement. The opposition picked a candidate that is an old brigade, he has fought many presidential elections and the best he got was an arranged settlement for Prime Minister’s position in an election believed that he won and it was given to former President Kibaki. President Kenyatta will face Raila Odinga, a longtime opposition figure who has been angling to become president for almost 20 years. However, the opposition has also accused the country’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission of being inept and biased, with a British court recently convicting two British businessmen of bribing election commissioners to get contracts for printing ballots. Like previous elections in the past two decades, there is already fear of violence, ethnic polarization, and escalating political tensions looms large. Kenya walks a tight rope and depending on how the IEBC conducts the election, might see it maintain its fragile democracy or slide into yet another gloomy post-election period. The international community need to keep an open eye on Kenyan elections, it is not going to be smooth sail for any of the candidate that wins the election. ANGOLA ELECTIONS Another interesting election to watch out for is that of an Angola, the elections are plan for August 31st 2017 when the long serving leader, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos is stepping down but who succeeds him is already be rumored to be his handpicked Vice President. The country is under a one party state so not much is expected to change event with an election coming up. In Dec. 2016, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos surprised many observers by announcing that he will step down as president before the 2017 elections. The ruling People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola party elected João Lourenco, a former defense minister, as vice president ahead of the parliamentary

It is another election we would keenly follow after 10 years in office, it is the end of the road for President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, and Africa’s first female president. Sirleaf leaves office after winning the Nobel Peace Prize, dealing with the Ebola crisis, passing a freedom of information bill, and taking on the taxing effort of rebuilding a country ravaged by war. By October 25th 2017, Liberia will have a new President elect who will take the mantle of an economy battered by low global commodity prices and post-Ebola decline in official inflows and try to rebuild or continue where President Johnson-Sirleaf stops. More than 1.9 million registered voters will elect presidential and legislative candidates from 22 political parties, according to the National Elections Commission. A key contender in the elections is George Weah, an ex-footballer who is considered by FIFA as the highest ranking African footballer of the 20th century, and whose

The challenge to hold the vote in 2017 will also be enormous, given that the electoral commission once said that it needed at least 17 months to complete registration processes and hold the elections. Beyond the election, a new government and president will face the task of addressing economic, humanitarian and political instabilities that persist all across the country.

If this does take place, it will be the first peaceful transfer of power since independence in 1960. A peaceful election will also avert a return to war in the populous, mineralrich country, where some five million people lost their lives in the civil war that lasted between 1994 and 2003. Uber hires Apple Music Marketer, Bozoma Saint John be chief brand officer. Saint John is not the first marketing exec the ride-hailing company has poached. Last fall, Jeff Jones, former chief marketing officer at Target, joined Uber as president of ride sharing. He left in March, however, amid company controversies that had CEO Travis Kalanick seeking “leadership help” and a chief operating officer. That was viewed as a de facto demotion for Jones. The controversies also included allegations of sexual harassment at the company, sparking an investigation that resulted in the firing of more than 20 employees, Uber said Tuesday. Now the publicly beleaguered Uber will be relying on Saint John to help restore its image. Last June, the Ghana native unveiled the new Apple Music at the tech brand’s developer’s conference, where her stage presence drew comparisons to the late Steve Jobs. Saint John previously worked at PepsiCo. Uber posted a message on Twitter announcing her hire but did not reply to inquire about the exact scope of her duties. Saint John could not immediately be reached for comment, but tweeted about the new job herself quoting Tracy Chapman. “You got a fast car, I want a ticket to anywhere; maybe we make a deal, maybe together we can get somewhere”-Tracy Chapman #uber #letsgo,” she wrote. Uber also announced that it has hired Frances Frei, a professor at Harvard Business School, as senior VP of leadership and strategy. It would be recalled that Uber fired more than 20 people involved in a sexual harassment probe, according to a Bloomberg report. The company investigated at least 215 employees and found 20 or more of them to be at fault in sexual harassment claims against company management in an on-going probe. It is time for image rebuilding process for the company.

INVESTMENT IN REAL ESTATE: EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR NIGERIAN DIASPORAN WITH KAYODE-OBEMBE & CO LTD Real Estate Real estate is the modern term for land, as well as any physical property or improvements that are permanently affixed to the land, including houses, buildings, landscaping, fencing, wells, etc. Investment in real estate therefore, involves the purchase, ownership, management, rental and/or sale of real estate for profit or private gain. It is about more than just finding a place to call home, but has increasingly become a common investment vehicle to grow and nurture wealth. It is interesting to note that an overwhelming proportion of today’s and past world billionaires made their fortunes through real estate and in most cases, the journey to wealth starts from just one property and the portfolio keep growing.
46
www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com
Have you ever wonder why property owners were called “lords”, or as now more colloquially known as “landlords”? It’s because owning properties gives power and financial freedom. There must be a reason why every rich person you know owns multiple properties. Even Donald Trump today remains a billionaire thanks to his real estate fortunes as most of his other businesses have declared bankruptcy. It is particularly gainful to invest in real estate in a growing and volatile economy like that of Nigeria as the real estate provides a safe hedge and store of value against inflation. The low rate of inflation in the country is positive for those that have real estate as assets because as the inflation goes up, so does the value of your real estate. Associated Risks However, in spite of the compelling opportunities that exist in investing in real estate, it also comes with its own associated risks. The most fundamental risk in real estate investment in Nigeria is the possibility of falling into hands of fraudsters. It is therefore important that you deal with the right people and invest in properties with genuine titles when investing in Nigerian real estate. After ensuring the integrity and genuineness of the people and properties with whom you are dealing with, the next important factors to consider are location, location and again, location! The rate of your success in real estate investment is determined largely by the location where you are putting your investment. If you are ever to choose between a good location with a higher price or bad location with a lower price, consider the former: When considering good location, one of the key factors to look out for include: area with appreciating value, axis on the line of current development, nearness to other properties with current or prospective values and good transportation. It is also important to look at the locations in regard to the future, rather than that of the past for higher, long term returns. It is also financially wise for prospective investors to consider investing dormant capital that’s sitting in low yielding Bank accounts into real estate. It may be a tough slog the first few years, but somewhat later, you’ll probably wish you had bought more. Investing in real estate is also becoming an increasingly favorable option for those eying retirement and who want to take advantage of real estate’s return potential and its abilities as a portfolio diversifier and inflation hedge.
“
“Everybody can own a property here, call us or email us for more details.... THE PLAN IS EASY TO REACH” Why you must consider investment in Real Estate. Other reasons why you must consider investment in real estate includes: • Hedge against inflation. You only hate inflation if you don’t have an asset that is inflating. Inflation is increasing the values of your properties hopefully faster than any input costs and the costs to operate the asset. Some people used to think back in 1996 how ridiculous it was for anyone to pay N50,000 to purchase a plot of land in the Ajah area of Lagos State. Today, the same one plot of land is over N50M. Inflation is a powerful economic force that’s difficult to stop. You would rather want to own inflating assets than always be a price taker. • Rise on growing economy. When times are good, assets tend to inflate quicker due to higher employment, rising wages, and rising corporate profits leading to more demands on properties. Real estate tends to be a major beneficiary during a bull market. Forget about protecting yourself against inflation, owning real estate is a gainful opportunity to make money with inflation. If there happens to be hyperinflation, your cash is devaluing rapidly whereas your real assets start surging in nominal value. When economic tightness returns sooner or later, it causes another surge in property prices. • Generational asset. You can pass on property from generation to generation, conceivably making your family and loved ones lives a little bit better. Think about our university graduates nowadays who are complaining they might never be able to afford owning a home like their parents due to exorbitant prices. Now think how much worse it will be for their children. Everybody has heard a story of some grandparent buying a home for just N20, 000 that is now worth millions of Naira. If you can buy a property to live and enjoy, and then pass it down the family to give your children a heads start, what an amazing gift you’ll provide. But besides working hard, a massive generational wealth transfer should help support future generations. • Little effort to build wealth. The whole idea is to invest in assets that work for you, and not the other way around. Real estate is a relatively easy business to understand compared to investing in stocks. For instance, on a rental property, good location, good tenants, manageable maintenance, and rental growth are all it basically takes to make for a solid real estate investment, whereas stocks have so many more variables to deal with, including: management credibility, industry growth, competition, politics, regulation, tax policies, inventory turns, margin analysis, operating profit growth, and more. Meanwhile, to turn N100, 000 into N500, 000 through equity investing is no easy feat, neither is making an interest
of another N400,000 on the deposit into a Bank over 7-8 years. • Paying on installment with no interest. For people paying on a property over a period of time on installment, the rate is fixed and the payments never change. 3-4 years from now you might be paying the same amount that aren’t worth as much as when you first took out the subscription for the property on installment. As your net worth grows, the amount you pay monthly or so becomes a smaller part of your overall net worth, thereby reducing any feelings of stress associated with paying for the property. • Collateral asset. Unlike cash, which serves no utility function, property addresses not only a fundamental human need, shelter but can also serve as collateral material against loans. If our financial system goes to hell, at least you will have an asset you can actually utilize. Remember, cash is just an ordinary paper and worthless unless it’s turned into a tangible asset! Continued on Page 48

Own property is in the best location in NIGERIA Continued from Page 47 • Tangible asset. Real estate is a tangible asset that will continue to add measurable value and enduring impact to everyday life and a valuable financial portfolio. It is an investment you can see, feel and touch, giving you a sense of accomplishment and success. KAYODE-OBEMBE & CO LIMITED: Empowering you to become home-owners. England wins U-21 World Cup England soar as history-makers abound in Korea Republic. 4,950 minutes of football. 140 goals. 52 matches. 24 teams. Two finalists. One champion. The FIFA U-20 World Cup Korea Republic 2017 ended in scintillating style in Suwon as England won their first ever title at this level. Fittingly capping off a tournament graced by dazzling moments, both individually and collectively, the Young Lions and Venezuela put on a final befitting a fine three weeks of action. Although the English team was dominated by colour players mostly with African (particularly Nigeria background) don the colours of United Kingdom and brought the elusive U-20 world cup to the country. Let us recap the three weeks football fiesta for you at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The champions Heading into Korea Republic 2017, England were not widely considered as favourites but, having topped Group A, they grew into the tournament through a fast-flowing midfield - with their attack spear-headed by Adidas Golden Ball winner Dominic Solanke - to seem the complete outfit. With Adidas Golden Glove winner Freddie Woodman anchoring proceedings, they proved worthy winners thanks to their combination of defensive solidity and enthralling talent when going forward. The hosts Korea Republic kicked the tournament off with a bang,
seeing a sea of red erupting in the Jeonju stands as the Taeguk Warriors surged to a 3-0 win over Guinea on day one. The home side’s poster-boy, Lee Seungwoo, shone before helping them to their tournament highlight – a 2-1 win over Argentina 54

– featuring a thrilling goal by the Barcelona starlet. While they could not match their best-ever performance of reaching the quarter-finals from four years ago, being eliminated by Portugal in the last 16, they left an explosive mark on the tournament’s early stages. The entertainers Venezuela were rightful finalists thanks to their impressive record in front of goal, sinking 14 in seven games, with nine different names on the score sheet. Undoubtedly, though, Zambia were one of the neutrals’ favourites, with their uninhibited attacking approach bringing goals at both ends. An incredible 22 strikes across five games were rattled in during the African champions’ matches in Korea Republic, with the Young Chipolopolo scoring 12 of them. The drama Last-minute goals were in plentiful supply across the tournament. No less than 24 of the tournament’s 140 goals were sunk in the final ten minutes. None were more jaw-dropping, though, than Samuel Sosa’s lastsecond free-kick to send Venezuela’s semi-final with Uruguay into extra-time. Seven of the 16 knockout games could not be decided in 90 minutes, with three going to penalties – all of which featured Uruguay, who won just one. The records and numbers The top three sides in England, Venezuela and Italy all went home celebrating their best performances at this level, with La Vinotinto registering their finest ever showing on the global stage. Having reached the last eight, Zambia too can reflect proudly on being their nation’s top U-20 generation, while Guinea and debutants Vietnam can both return with first ever points and goals. Fellow first-timers Vanuatu achieved the latter but, while points eluded them, 3-2 defeats to Mexico and Germany can still be cherished as proud moments for the islanders.
On the individual front, Venezuela goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez claimed an exceptional spot in the history books as he became the first stopper to score in the competition – converting a penalty against Vanuatu. A special mention should go to USA’s Josh Sargent, who hit four goals to equal the Stars and Stripes’ U-20 scoring record while also becoming their youngestever scorer in the competition, aged just 17. Myer Bevan’s sensational strike for New Zealand against Honduras after 45 seconds, making it the tournament’s sixth-fastest ever, also deserves a tip of the cap.
