George Weah’s hopes of Liberian presidency to be decided in a run-off
If
passion for football was the only reason for consideration, George Weah of Liberia would have been President now but he is beginning to understand that the passion for football is totally and completely different from politics. People are united when it comes to football but divided when it comes to politics; for football no individual gains matter but the national interest while for politics, every one seek what he or she can gain from it. What an irony in life, yet politics seems to be the only norm accepted by all for change of power or government in the world. Every other method is perceived as unfair, unguaranteed or unconstitutional. We would prefer to see the majority of the peoples’ support prevail as we usually witness amazing support for the national teams; when they play football for country’s like Liberia that probably would not make it to the world cup finals. We were opportune to meet George Weah during the country’s civil war and observe how he appealed to the people’s conscience to lay down their arms to come and watch a football game; telling them they don’t need to kill each other
but embrace one another. The response was infectious, as people from every corner of the country came out to watch their national team play. They rejoiced together, danced and yet after the football match, they withdrew to the bushes again and resumed fighting. What an irony of life ! As
Pastor Elvis Iruh Editor-in-Chief
Liberians decide in a second round voting between an Exfootballer and a professional politician, we are curious to see what side of the coin wins. It really does not matter, Liberia is still in the shoulder of his past glory. Bringing an American-Liberian technocrat like outgoing President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf seem not to have helped much. The complaint against her government is that they were too slow on the path of recovery. What should the people expect from an inexperienced politician like Senator George Weah tagged ‘King Geroge’ or the current Vice-President, Joseph Boakai tagged ‘sleeping Joe’; at 73 years of age. Does he have the stamina to withstand the pressure of governance? Time will definitely tell but we wish Liberians all the best as they make this important decision / election. FEEDBACK Dear Editor,
My impression of The Voice magazine/The Voice Achievers award
And Yes, my summary of your esteemed magazine is apt. You fill a vacuum in the narrative about migrants told by others whose only political Capital is anti-immigrants. The
sterling and positive contributions by immigrants in the socio-economic, cultural integration, entrepreneurship and business start ups, many of which are owned by migrants are never mentioned in the present xenophobic political debates. Thus, the work of the voice magazine in highlighting this aspect of our positive contributions, otherwise hidden from the tendentious narrative by the mainstream media is apt and commendable. And by the way, this is the message I have carried with me in all the international and national platforms the Lord has given me in the past 24 years. Bless you my brother and your wonderful team . Rev Tom Marfo Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Dear Editor,

I have seen some young women on facebook who are worthy of a nomination for instance best newcomer or something for the wonderful work they are doing. You can check their details at www. melaninwonder.com. I hope you will consider their work? By Janet Dara Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Dear Editor,
Our work is being recognized even in my local community.
There was a time in history when achievements of women, women warriors and Women stories where deliberately erased or not documented. It is wonderful to see that even without an Interview and permission, newspapers just get my stories and publish them.... one day a girl will be searching for some inspiration in old newspapers and they will find such articles I believe I would have done my part for the girl child.
Buumba Malambo The Zambia
Thanks so much Times of Zambia newspaper for not breaking the positive cycle..... Do your part for mother Zambia..
Editor’s response Dear Janet, Thank you for writing to us, yes we have a committee that considers each year voulme of nominations of which we select a list of about 30 persons to be recongized each year. Some will argue that 30 is a large number but as you can see more nominations keep coming up long after it is closed. We would check your nomination against next year and we truly wish them good luck in their future endeavours. Let them keep doing what they are doing right now and continue to impact the lives of Africans and others. Editor

Senator Weah and Vice President Boakai for presidential run-off
F
ormer football star Senator George Weah and VicePresident Joseph Boakai have resume campaigns for presidential run-off elections in Liberia as both men could not secured the 50 plus one vote cast required by the constitution to have a clear winner. From Mr. Weah’s performance at the first round of voting which gave him close to 39% of the votes against his closest rival, the current Vice president at 29% is probably an indication that the Liberian people want a change from the Presidency of outgoing first female President in Africa, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; who is Will George Weah second time luck shine to the Presidency? not only the first Africa’s female elected president and but also a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. She has governed Liberia through the most difficult times in the history of the country, president under Ellen Johnson Sirleaf since 2005 although he has distanced himself from her record, saying “a lot more after several years of bitter civil war. Both candidates could have done better if the list of presidential needs to be achieved” candidates in this election race was less than 20. For a small Liberia, which was founded by freed US slaves in the 19th country as Liberia, having 20 candidates vie for the office of Century, has not had a smooth transfer of power in 73 years. the President showed how divided the people are and what Ms Sirleaf took office in 2006, after her predecessor, Charles task lies ahead of the two remaining candidates to convince the Taylor, was forced out of office by rebels in 2003, ending a flowers of the remaining 18 candidates to vote for them at the long civil war. Taylor is currently serving a 50-year prison sentence in the UK polls on 7th November 2017. Senator Weah, the first African to win the Ballon D’Or football for war crimes related to the conflict in neighbouring Sierra award, is on the ballot for the third time, first as a candidate, Leone. second time as a Vice President candidate and now contesting again for the President. There were speculations in the media during the counting the results of the elections that George Weah had out rightly won the elections but it turned out that he was short of the 50% plus one votes needed to avoid a run-off. Both Senator Weah and Vice President Boakai had predicted they would win the first round of voting. The profiles of these two men are different and clear to the naked eye. One represents the youths of Liberia and appeals to them and that is George Weah while the Vice President represents the continuation of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf legacy of rebuilding the country. Senator George Weah is 51 years old. He is a former footballer and the former winner of FIFA World Footballer of the Year. He was well known on the football pitch in Africa and Europe. According to reports; he has the backing of jailed warlord and former president Charles Taylor even though he claims he has no direct contact with him or spoken to him but his choice of Taylor’s ex-wife, Jewel Howard Taylor, is his running mate has continued to be the question many people ask him. His reply is simple, “she is a Liberian, a citizen, a senator and loved by her people so why can’t she be a good Vice President for Liberia? The second candidate is the current Vice-President, Mr. Joseph Boakai, who is 73 years old. He is nicknamed “Sleepy Joe”. Even though he denies it but he has been caught on camera on several occasions sleeping at public functions. Many expected that he should have retired with the outgoing President but his party choose him over other candidates. He describes himself Vice-President Joseph Boakai: Will he succeed his boss? as a ‘Dreamer for the future of Liberia’. He has been Vice-
After Angola’s election: What has changed?
A
ngola’s ruling MPLA party after Jose Eduardo dos Santos retired and elected a new President seem to remain the same as the old man is still a very dominant figure in the ruling party that won the last President elections with 61.07 percent of the votes. Before the polls, the opposition were confident that they could wrestle power out of the hands of the ruling party. Of course they complained of irregularities but President João Lourenço was declared and since been sworn in as President of sub-Saharan Africa’s thirdlargest economy. He replaced Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who steps down after 38 years at the helm of affairs but he has continued as head of the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). A role which many think still gives him so much influence in the running of the country. He is like a man who stepped aside, only to put his choice candidate there as a proxy. The main opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) took 26.67 percent, with the smaller opposition party CASA-CE winning 9.44 percent. Again if the opposition was united they probably would have given a stronger challenge to the new oligarch in African politics. According to the new President, with elections over, he will settle down to do the work that he is elected for – to produce a better future for the country and the people of Angola.” Electoral observers have said the vote on August 23 was reasonably free and fair. The head of the African Union’s observation mission, Jose Maria Neves, congratulated Angola on a poll he said served as a “reference for the continent”. On the streets of Luanda, cheering and the honking of horns was heard as residents celebrated another electoral win for the MPLA, which has maintained an unbroken hold on power since Africa’s second-largest crude producer gained
independence from Portugal in 1975. President Lourenço is the third president since independence. Much is not known about him. He is a quiet 63-year-old more used to army barracks and the closed doors of party politics
than the public spotlight, he has denied he will remain in the shadow of his predecessor, Dos Santos. President Lourenço has promised to kick-start the economy and has not ruled out deals with the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to help restructure it. Angola imports everything from washing powder to long-life milk at a huge cost. With the current dispensation, the ruling party, MPLA have 150 lawmakers, giving them the twothirds parliamentary majority needed to pass any form of legislation. Tough times await the opposition except if they can come together to work for the interest of the country to check the excesses of the new powers that be or else they may be preparing for another long term rule.

Eliane Becks Nininahazwe back from Burundi Few months ago, Eliane informed us of her planned trip to her country of brith, Burundi to bring HIV/Aids awareness program to a population that has been neglected over the years. She recently returned back after 20 days stay in Burundi, she will be sharing some of her very personal experiences with you in this magazine. This is her short remarks on her return from Burundi titled, “At my home safe Hello Netherlands. After 20 days of work in Burundi, I would like to inform you that I arrived safe back to the Netherlands. It was a very long trip from Friday 23.30pm I was at Bujumbura Airport waiting for the Flight from 02:55 to Jomo Kenyatta Nairobi Airport which arrived at 05:35 the following morning. The connection flight from Nairobi to Amsterdam Airport was ready to leave at 07:55 and we arrived safely at Schiphol at 15h40. It was a great surprised by my parents in Law together with my boys, they were all at the Airport waiting for me since my
husband has left for Saint Maarten few days earlier for his work. I immediately felt the cold, Burundi was very hot and there was no rain throughout my stay there except on Thursday afternoon we had rain. My feet were swollen because of the heat. All the shoes I took with me could not fit anymore so I needed to buy new ballerinas .During my check-in at the transit in Nairobi, I needed to take them out and go through scan. They came back broken. I was glad I had my home sandals crocs. I used them all the way to The Netherlands. Long live the Crocs, they saved me! I am having much sweet memories of Burundi especially in Batwa Community which I will continue to share via my blog and this medium that the Voice magazine has afforded me. Thank you again for all your support. I would not have done it without YOU! Peace By Eliane Becks Nininahazwe

ADVERTORIAL
INVESTMENT IN REAL ESTATE: EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR NIGERIAN DIASPORAN WITH KAYODE-OBEMBE & CO LTD Real Estate Real estate is the modern term for land, as well as any physical property or improvements that are permanently affixed to the land, including houses, buildings, landscaping, fencing, wells, etc. Investment in real estate therefore, involves the purchase, ownership, management, rental and/or sale of real estate for profit or private gain. It is about more than just finding a place to call home, but has increasingly become a common investment vehicle to grow and nurture wealth. It is interesting to note that an overwhelming proportion of today’s and past world billionaires made their fortunes through real estate and in most cases, the journey to wealth starts from just one property and the portfolio keep growing. Have you ever wonder why property owners were called “lords”, or as now more colloquially known as “landlords”? It’s because owning properties gives power and financial freedom. There must be a reason why every rich person you know owns multiple properties. Even Donald Trump today remains a billionaire thanks to his real estate fortunes as most of his other businesses have declared bankruptcy. It is particularly gainful to invest in real estate in a growing and volatile economy like that of Nigeria as the real estate provides a safe hedge and store of value against inflation. The low rate of inflation in the country is positive for those that have real estate as assets because as the inflation goes up, so does the value of your real estate. Associated Risks However, in spite of the compelling opportunities that exist in investing in real estate, it also comes with its own associated risks. The most fundamental risk in real estate investment in Nigeria is the possibility of falling into hands of fraudsters. It is therefore important that you deal with the right people and invest in properties with genuine titles when investing in Nigerian real estate. After ensuring the integrity and genuineness of the people and properties with whom you are dealing with, the next important factors to consider are location, location and again, location! The rate of your success in real estate investment is determined largely by the location where you are putting your investment. If you are ever to choose between a good location with a higher price or bad location with a lower price, consider the former: When considering good location, one of the key factors to look out for include: area with appreciating value, axis on the line of current development, nearness to other properties
with current or prospective values and good transportation. It is also important to look at the locations in regard to the future, rather than that of the past for higher, long term returns. It is also financially wise for prospective investors to consider investing dormant capital that’s sitting in low yielding Bank accounts into real estate. It may be a tough slog the first few years, but somewhat later, you’ll probably wish you had bought more. Investing in real estate is also becoming an increasingly favorable option for those eying retirement and who want to take advantage of real estate’s return potential and its abilities as a portfolio diversifier and inflation hedge.
“
“Everybody can own a property here, call us or email us for more details.... THE PLAN IS EASY TO REACH” Why you must consider investment in Real Estate. Other reasons why you must consider investment in real estate includes: • Hedge against inflation. You only hate inflation if you don’t have an asset that is inflating. Inflation is increasing the values of your properties hopefully faster than any input costs and the costs to operate the asset. Some people used to think back in 1996 how ridiculous it was for anyone to pay N50,000 to purchase a plot of land in the Ajah area of Lagos State. Today, the same one plot of land is over N50M. Inflation is a powerful economic force that’s difficult to stop. You would rather want to own inflating assets than always be a price taker. • Rise on growing economy. When times are good, assets tend to inflate quicker due to higher employment, rising wages, and rising corporate profits leading to more demands on properties. Real estate tends to be a major beneficiary during a bull market. Forget about protecting yourself against inflation, owning real estate is a gainful opportunity to make
money with inflation. If there happens to be hyperinflation, your cash is devaluing rapidly whereas your real assets start surging in nominal value. When economic tightness returns sooner or later, it causes another surge in property prices. • Generational asset. You can pass on property from generation to generation, conceivably making your family and loved ones lives a little bit better. Think about our university graduates nowadays who are complaining they might never be able to afford owning a home like their parents due to exorbitant prices. Now think how much worse it will be for their children. Everybody has heard a story of some grandparent buying a home for just N20, 000 that is now worth millions of Naira. If you can buy a property to live and enjoy, and then pass it down the family to give your children a heads start, what an amazing gift you’ll provide. But besides working hard, a massive generational wealth transfer should help support future generations. • Little effort to build wealth. The whole idea is to invest in assets that work for you, and not the other way around. Real estate is a relatively easy business to understand compared to investing in stocks. For instance, on a rental property, good location, good tenants, manageable maintenance, and rental growth are all it basically takes to make for a solid real estate investment, whereas stocks have so many more variables to deal with, including: management credibility, industry growth, competition, politics, regulation, tax policies, inventory turns, margin analysis, operating profit growth, and more. Meanwhile, to turn N100, 000 into N500, 000 through equity investing is no easy feat, neither is making an interest of another N400,000 on the deposit into a Bank over 7-8 years. • Paying on installment with no interest. For people paying on a property over a period of time on installment, the rate is fixed and the payments never change. 3-4 years from now you might be paying the same amount that aren’t worth as much as when you first took out the subscription for the property on installment. As your net worth grows, the amount you pay monthly or so becomes a smaller part of your overall net worth, thereby reducing any feelings of stress associated with paying for the property. • Collateral asset. Unlike cash, which serves no utility function, property addresses not only a fundamental human need, shelter but can also serve as collateral material against loans. If our financial system goes to hell, at least you will have an asset you can actually utilize. Remember, cash is just an ordinary paper and worthless unless it’s turned into a tangible asset! Continued on Page 46
Own property is in the best location in NIGERIA Continued from Page 45 • Tangible asset. Real estate is a tangible asset that will continue to add measurable value and enduring impact to everyday life and a valuable financial portfolio. It is an investment you can see, feel and touch, giving you a sense of accomplishment and success. KAYODE-OBEMBE & CO LIMITED: Empowering you to become home-owners. How and when did Nigeria get into this D-8 group, which in its website affirms that the ‘idea of cooperation among major Muslim developing countries was mooted by Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan, former Prime Minister of Turkey”? From what sources does the membership fees for such religion-based organizations emanate in a secular Nigeria? When the above is juxtaposed alongside a very striking
Now that President Buhari is found to be corrupt...
President Buhari is probably fighting a lone war against corruption in high places, as a large number of those working with or around him are not just corrupt but very corrupt, making things just too difficult for him. And you do not expect him to employ the fire brigade approach and get consumed, too. If you truly understand how bad, rotten and corrupt the system has been over the decades, you probably wouldn’t be expecting President Buhari to perform the kind of miracle we all expect him to, as expunging corruption from Nigeria’s system cannot be a day’s job. As we should know, corruption is a terrible and rugged fighter that will fight with the last drop of its blood, especially when you employ the top-down approach of fighting it. It will always fight back, firing on all cylinders. Their strategy now is to paint President Buhari ‘corrupt’ too, so we can say “they are all the same,” and then naturally desire to go back to the old order; and they have almost succeeded, with the events playing out recently. Remember also President Buhari had lamented how corruption is fighting back over and over since he started the fight, but we seem not to pay adequate attention to really understand him. While assuring that Nigeria is determined to emerge
religion-based slant in leadership of state institutions and coming on the heels of Nigeria’s continuing membership of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC), it will take a spectacularly blind mind not to discern a worrisome pattern that if not stemmed early enough, portends dire outcomes. There is nothing wrong with a people hobnobbing with whosoever they so desire to be with. When however an entire multi-ethnic and multi-religious contraption is by deceit, subterfuge, sleuth and all manners of vague posturing ensnared into being perceived, seen or become a religious state, a transgenerational catastrophe would have been ignited. A holistic restructuring and renegotiation of the Nigerian contraption will spare all and sundry this looming tragedy. By Eze Eluchie, Contributing Editor for The Voice magazine
victorious in the war against corruption, Buhari told the world that corrupt Nigerians had built a formidable arsenal of illicit wealth, which they had deployed against the fight on diverse fronts. Consequently, I enjoin us not to be ignorant of the vices of corruption, even as I urge President Buhari to up his game, and redraft his anti-corruption strategy so that his efforts may not be wasted. VP Osinbajo once said that if President Buhari lost the war on corruption the consequences would be bad for Nigeria “The effect of corruption on Nigeria is, of course, unquantifiable. Aside from soiling Nigeria’s corporate image in the international community, all the social, economic and political structures in the country have been ruined by corruption. Social services and infrastructure are in a shambles. The people are pauperized as the ordinary people are always the victims. While the people wallow in abject poverty and want, members of the political class and their business class associates bask in stupendous stolen wealth.” - The Guardian In summary, let us be on the lookout for their strategies and see things from a different perspective while contributing our individual quota to the fight against corruption. Mediterranean migration to Europe: A Western made problem
These are dark days for Africa; although not in the sense of a nuclear apocalypse. Capsized boats! Hundreds are drowning….thousands are rescued….thousands of dead migrants are at sea. Meanwhile there are scores of unknown people who are missing. This has now become a weekly report. There is no conclusion in sight; there seems to be nothing to solve the problem. The crisis is Western-made. It is intensified by poor political leadership in the African states. African countries are politically independent, yet they still remain in some kind of perverse bondage; namely economical. These countries are plagued with corruption and insecurity. There are ram-shackled infrastructures and as a result: poverty, unemployment, messy urbanisation and anxiety is widespread. Migration to Europe, through the desert and the Mediterranean Sea, is seen as a means to escape the failure of the leadership in Africa. The adverse effect of Western policies towards Africa and the hypocrisy of European politicians is in the backdrop of all this. It is true that Italy and Spain have been receiving and hosting significant numbers of African migrants, but many other countries pay blind eyes to the terrible predicament of migrants. They even politicise it for their political advantage. Over the years, Africa has either been a food basket for Europe or a raw material patch; hence the struggle for it. Africa has endured years of servitude, colonisation and religious moderation. The consequence of this is the enormous suffering and deprivation, which has extended to the newest age-groups. To worsen the situation, countries in Africa have methods of governance that have been overthrown and replaced by a Western model of democracy. Democracy as a concept is not bad after all, but its democratic model cannot help an underdeveloped Africa. It takes sincerity, only such exhibited by veteran writer, Basil Davison (Black Man Burden), to understand that Africa had a superior democracy or representative government before her invasion. Such sophistication shown by the Bini Kingdom (Nigeria) and the Ashanti Kingdom (Gold Coast) would have placed most of

the nations in prosperity and peace. As if that was not enough, the West decides who rules different African nations. Once such a leader supports the Western bid then they can rule for what would seem like eternity. As seen in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central Africa Republic, the government may oppress or repress its people. No Western power opposes that, providing that the resources are theirs to plunder. Through technical hitches with the West, there eventually comes the option for a regime change. Sometimes these changes just happen; very much like a match being struck. So, when looking at the bigger picture, how could the government of Kabila thrive even after overstaying its mandate? It is now apparent that the pretence is not as fearsome as it looked. The illegal invasion of Libya and eventual death of Cornel Mohammed Gadhafi opened the floodgate of migrants using the Mediterranean to Europe. Despite the exclamation over the extremist views of the field marshal, Libya had unity. The sub region was free from insurgents, terrorists and mass migration. The current insecurity and exodus from West African and Syria is directly caused by the action (or inaction) of the Obama administration. Hilary Clinton’s poor understanding of the regional and political dimension of African countries plays a factor in this. The understanding is so poor, to the extent that the US only considered their economic and political interests and abandoned one of their finest diplomat in Benghazi. Ambassador Christopher Stephen, the American ambassador to Libya, was gruesomely murdered after he made a desperate distress call; which was not acted upon. This is an aberration of American’s principle. There is a right to life under their constitution. Also highlighted here is the Western “I don’t care” attitude which is akin to throwing away the keg with the wine in it. There have been enough lessons evident from the regime change in Iraq. Suffice to say, that Libya’s political predicament was avoidable. In desperate foolishness, migrants look at the horizon. With high hopes they plunge and delve into the unknown; beyond the sea. Notwithstanding, little preparation for their precarious endeavour risks everything in their lives. Footprints left on the spotless domes of the Sahara Desert are soon obliterated by the wind and storm. Yet unaffected by the harsh conditions, their match to Europe continues with minds fixed on the trophy; namely, a life in Europe.
By Lucky Aghedo In great numbers, African youths of all ages move from different African countries; through desert into the Mediterranean Sea and then to Europe. All in all, these young Africans are desperately seeking greener pasture. In rafters and over loaded boats they brace the sea. The Red Cross counts the dead and rescues the lucky survivors. The missing are estimated, no one truly knows the actual numbers as the footprint on the sands are wiped away and there are obviously no foot print on the oceans, rivers and embankments. Those who are rescued become traumatised by their experiences, yet they are left without counselling. This has led to many metal health problems. Crimes and tension with their host communities becomes more likely. On the other hand, Africa is losing significant labour force, as able young men and women go forth into the exodus to the “greener pasture”. This truth remains: Africa needs development and the west must face this reality. After the Second World War, Germany benefited from Marshal Funds for development. Such a plan will benefit Africa. Why has such a plan not been advanced for any region in Africa? The meeting of African leaders in France to discuss floating migrants is another example of the lip service and tea parties, where the leaders adorn themselves in fancy clothes to enhance their images. All the while, their countries suffer: they lack in infrastructure, development, security and employment to name a few mainland necessities. The summit recommends that genuine asylum seekers should apply for asylum in their respective countries. There is no mention of the categories of asylum seekers. We hear too often of economic migrants. This group is the most vulnerable, yet they are not rendered any status. Their asylum applications are often rejected on the ground that it fails the criterion set on the asylum requirement. The economic wellbeing of any nation is an echo of her political decisions. Therefore, the dilemma of economic migrants should be carefully determined. The reckless political and economic decision of politicians has blurred the line, thus differentiating political and economic categorisations of asylum. This must critically be reviewed.
Political independence short of economic independence is subjugation. As a consequence, Africans still suffer from colonialism; this should have ended decades ago. It should have ended before the United Kingdom’s Enoch Powell had anything to say about decolonisation. The motivation for taking the precarious journey is lack of hope for a bright future. Development plans are cut short due to lack of continuity in government. Insecurity is rampant and this is reflected in the massive unemployment rate, basic amenities, exorbitant cost of education and the oppression and marginalisation of minority tribes. It is true that Europe will not be administrators in Africa again, nevertheless they still pull the strings. They are similar to Mario Puzo’s Godfather in that respect. The multinational companies operating there have duties in the development of their immediate operational areas. The Western leaders are as culpable as their African counterparts. They aid and abet corruption as they encourage and do business with these leaders. It is indeed very similar to the Mafioso in a lot of ways! Further migration to Europe will be fuelled by the current political situation in Nigeria and Spain. The agitation in South Eastern Nigeria worsened by the poor political decision of the government to invade and violate peaceful demonstrators. While on the European shores; crisis looms large. Catalans had a referendum despite the Spanish government’s swift opposition. A democratic course which will embolden oppressed observers and people like the Biafra people or the Oduduwa Kingdom. Democracy is only good if it is governed well. The oppression of people anywhere in world will be overthrown no matter how long or difficult it takes. It is a natural tendency of all to aspire to greatness and freedom. Hence all the oppressed people crave for self-determination and autonomy. Whether capitalist or socialist everyone deserves freedom and better life. No nation or race deserve the label called refugees.

Anthony Joshua defended his World Boxing titles British Nigerian born heavyweight boxing champion last weekend successfully defended his world heavyweight boxing titles. His opponent was a last minute replacement from the much advertised fight against Bulgarian European title holder, Kubrat Pulev who injured himself in training. His replacement is France-based Cameroonian called Carlos Takam. He fought before a full capacity crowd of nearly 80,000 fans at Cardiff’s Principality in Wales. And it was also the first time Anthony Joshua fought in Wales before such a huge crowd. Takam is ranked third in the IBF rankings, he has only been stopped once in 12 rounds, with that defeat coming against Alexander Povetkin three years ago. Carlos Takam insisted he was not worried about the prospect of facing Anthony Joshua. Joshua, meanwhile, who beat Wladimir Klitschko in the 11th round earlier this year, had managed to knock out all but two of his 18 opponents inside three rounds. But Takam, who knows all about big fight nights, isn’t losing sleep over the challenge facing him. “I don’t know if I’m excited, stressed or confused but I’m definitely ready for the fight,” Takam told the media. “It will be a 58

proper fight. “AJ is a good boxer who likes to box and I like opponents who like to come forward and throw punches. I like to get stuck in as well. “I believe in myself. I never go into a fight thinking I might lose - I’m a winner, I like to win not to lose. “I’m not scared, 80,000 fans means nothing to me. I’ve boxed in New Zealand, Canada and Russia so that won’t faze me. “It’s about what happens in the ring. It’s about me and him.” For many of boxing observers, they want to see how Joshua reacts to an unknown boxer like Takam. His biggest test so far was with Wladimir Klitschko who floored him, an older experienced boxer but he recovered from the knock down to win by a knockout himself. Joshua is unbeaten in his 19 professional fights before this fight.. He had been due to face Kubrat Pulev, the Bulgarian whose only career defeat came against Klitschko. However, he pulled out with less than two weeks before the fight with an apparent shoulder injury, forcing promoter Eddie Hearn to call up his second-choice IBF mandatory challenger Carlos Takam. According to the camp of Joshua, he is prepared and he knows about Takam. Anthony Joshua is expected to be nearly a stone lighter for this world title class and it probably show in the fight as the shorter man stood man to man with him in the centre of the ring until the 10th round when he was stopped. Anthony Joshua (20-0). He retained his IBF/ WBA heavyweight titles but with a premature 10th round stoppage over his opponent, Takam. Yes he has taken some punches but he was still standing on his feet. As far as I’m concerned the most exciting fighter in the world boxing today is Anthony Joshua and he has delivered again.. Looking into the future, the fight that would excite the boxing world is a world title unification bout with Deontay Wilder. His camp says they also want the fight so it is just a matter of time that both boxers we have a head on coalition in the boxing ring.
An appeal on behalf of Bash Ali to President Buhari The President, Mohammadu Buhari, GCFR CommanderIn-Chief, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Aso Rock Villa, Abuja-Nigeria. Dear Mr President, ISSUE OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE (AN OPEN LETTER) Bash Ali- OON, a National Award Holder and the oldest active young man in the world of boxing history, to me is among the most patriotic Nigerians. This is a NigerianAmerican citizen with all the opportunities at his beck and call in America who decided to come home to his mother land to bring honour by rewriting the world boxing history, has being taken for a ride for eleven years now. While Presidential statements are taken as directives in other climes and held in high
office is ridiculing, but that the exalted office, as history will recall took eleven years of pleading for Bash Ali to be given an opportunity to bring honour to his mother land. Please note, this is a man that turned down a Forty-Eight Million Euro offer deal for this same envisaged Guinness Book of World Record Boxing Tournament to have taken place in Europe. Please let your government that is held in high esteem as a result of your integrity be the one as history beckons to do the needful. It is embarrassing enough for Bash Ali OON, to be pleading and begging for eleven years now for the needful to be done. And moreover, why is the Minister of sport and all the sport advisory team (SA’s, SSA’s and PA’s) not to have seen the huge embedded business in this anticipated Guinness Book of World Record Boxing Tournament and to advice Mr President
What happened to all the local committees set up for this event to take place in Nigeria under three Presidents? esteem as actions follows immediately to the spirit and letter, to bring about the desired result-effects, but here in Nigeria, an impression has been given over the years as if Presidential statements is now like a beer parlour-gutter talks, thereby ridiculing the exalted office. What message are we sending to the youth? That Nigeria is NOT worth dying or sacrificing for? Is it surprising why some of our sports men and women are renouncing their place of birth and taking up the citizenship of other nation? We need to work the talk to correct these anomalies. The Office of the President should realize, it is NOT Bash Ali that this exalted
appropriately. Mr President, please treat this Bash Ali’s matter as an issue of National importance with military dispatch so as to inspire our youth that we got a Country that Nigeria cares. With this singular act alone, we would begin to correct the impression other nations has about us as jokers and not serious people. Sir, history would be kind to you if you break this jinx that two previous Presidential directives could not and did not mean to do.
