A SENSE OF EMPOWERMENT MoolBoran Regular

Kirsty McDonald - Freelance Designer - Park Lea Design Agency Ltd

Arabel Manners is a brand that caters for the everyday woman, not limiting design to a certain commodity or style. It caters for women who are a uk size 5 up to a size 12, and provides styles in a wide fit. The brand was started by the co Founder Arabel when she went on a mission one Christmas to find stylish on trend shoes for her Mum who was a UK size 9. She came back empty handed disappointed that shopping for large feet was just exhausting and non-existent. Since then Arabel now works with some of the greatest shoe makers in Italy to provide exquisite handcrafted quality shoes. Arabel says that we wanted the brand to be more than a place where people just buy shoes as an afterthought that just fit but a place women feel comfortable to express their feelings and wear comfortable statement shoes. When people hear Arabel Manners we want women to feel a sense of empowerment that they are heard and their size is catered for whether you are a 5 and half or a size 12. This is a safe haven where fashion and design has no limits because as women we are all different so why should a size limit this.

Join us and support black businesses

L

ast year The Voice took the bold step to publishing a Black Business Guide to highlight the advances that were being made by self-sustained small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in our community, which are contributing greatly to the UK economy. We highlighted the valuable contribution these businesses are making, not only creating wealth for these innovative entrepreneurs, but employment

as well. According to figures released last year more than 55,000 businesses have been launched with the help of government start-up loans since 2012, creating more than 66,000 jobs. An impressive 1 in 5 of these enterprises are black owned. Sadly many in our community don’t know about the valuable contribution they are increasingly making to the UK economy. That is why The Black Business Guide is so important - it gives these businesses a platform to showcase their many products and services to a wider audience and enables people to find and support them. Potential customers in London can now tap into a black business establishment in Huddersfield. Likewise someone in the Midlands can buy from a supplier in Manchester or another part of the country. This second edition covers businesses in a wider range of sectors – from the hair and beauty industry to health and wellness, to name a few. When the guide was first published last November, it was quickly followed by the first Voice Black Business Fair at Lambeth Town Hall in Brixton, south London. The event attracted over 1,000 visitors who were eager to support black businesses in time for Christmas. We are pleased to announce that the second staging of the fair will be on December 7, 2019 and many of the businesses featured in the guide will also be on show. The appetite for this is growing. Both the Black Business Guide and fair attracted much positive feedback and a strong desire to see them continue. We want to continue to improve them and reach as many entrepreneurs as we can. We can never solve our economic problems or create a future for our young people while sending all of our money out of the community as fast as we earn it. It’s estimated that the spending power of UK black consumers is worth £300 billion. If we can spend that amount generally, why not spend some of it within our community and help create prosperity for all?

‘I TAKE THESE STORIES INTO SCHOOLS AND BRING LESSONS TO LIFE’

J.D. Okoro is a London-based author, best known for children’s books and graphic novels.

“I had a pretty normal childhood. School was wonderful, I was quite entrepreneurial. I had a milk round when I was 6, paper round when I was 9, awful Saturday jobs from 15. I washed cars, traded caterpillars, imported and sold Hulk Hogan bandanas in the playground; sang carols door-todoor; penny-for-the-guy, you name it. Worst job was probably serving legal writs: knocking on people’s doors at 6am, tapping them on the shoulder with the document and then running like hell!” After a career as a barrister, and working in the City for blue-chip companies and his own consultancy, fatherhood arrived and he started writing intensively. One such book is a delightful picture book for children aged 4-7; the much acclaimed “The Scruffapillar”. This was published last year, and his next picture books in the series “Sir Newt the Brute” and “The Rat that Flapped” will be published later this year. A history buff, his epic, “Beetle Reich” was published in

Natural Products Feel better today

2018. This graphic novel charts the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi party. Using insects as the main protagonists (Hitler is a European dung beetle), Okoro recounts central events of the war whilst shining a light on forgotten battles. “It was important to include the parts of the war that are often overlooked: the African battles, the Commonwealth forces, the Tuskegee Airmen etc. I take these stories into schools and bring lessons to life.”

SIERRA LEONIAN FOOD MADE WITH LOVE Theresa and her daughter have been cooking for years. Theresa started cooking as a child back in Sierra Leone, gaining years of experience cooking in schools, firehouses in London and has always catered for Sierra leonean parties. She has passed on the cooking bug on to her daughter Satema. In 2016, an opportunity to have a food stall came up in their local market, it was there “Theresa’s Kitchen” was born. Since then the family company has done several markets, catered private events and thrown regular pop ups in Brockley south London. The cuisine is a mixture of Sierra Leonean, West African and pan African cuisine. The menu takes influence from Theresa’s upbringing and recipes she and her daughter have learned from living in the cultural melting pot that is London. It’s a real family operation everyone gets involved with cooking and serving guests. They hope to expand the business into substantial profitability in years to come.

Registering your trademark by Bow Law Chambers

A

re you a business owner? Do you know how to take action under civil law to try and stop others from replicating, using, importing or selling your creation? The strongest means of protecting a mark is to register it! Trademarks protect your brands. This could be your business name, a product or a service and can be a single word, logo, picture or a mixture of these. Registration at Companies House gives you no rights to prevent others using your trademark - neither does owning the domain name for your website! EXCLUSIVE The first trademark was registered under the Trade Marks Act Registration Act 1875. A UK trademark registration gives you the proprietor the exclusive right to use the registered trademark on those goods or services for which it is registered and warns others of your claim to that mark and thereby acts as a warning. The sooner you register your mark, the sooner you will have the advantages of registration. The effects of potential infringement and or failure to register may negatively impact your business and reputation. Trademark is one of several types of intellectual property rights including; Patents, Design, Copyright and Trade secrets. THE POWER TO ACHIEVE ANYTHING HAIRporrn Ltd is a UK based online company. Suppliers of quality hair pieces/ hair extensions In the form of hair frontals, closures, wefted bundles, Clip ins and full lace wigs worldwide via our website: www.hairporrn.com The founder and CEO of HAIRporrn Charlene Braithwaite wanted to create an avenue for women in the UK and around the world to be able to source quality, sensational, sexy hair extensions from someone they can relate to. I had taken years before launching my company to first put in the work to research and find the right supplier. My supplier/factory is a black owned business also. We work together so well as we know what the consumer wants as we both are consumers in this industry also. Hair extensions can be used for a number of reason as previously mentioned creating different lengths, textures, protective styles but also confidence, self worth and the ability to give you the power to achieve anything. A women’s crown is very important I want our queens to wear HAIRporrn feeling empowered. As I can relate. On a different note when asked about the company name, Charlene laughed. The name HAIRporrn came

about quite some time ago. There was a wave of #hashtags going around where people were associating any and everything with the term ‘Porn’ #foodporn etc I wanted the company name to be different and stand out so I added hair to the word but also adding another ‘r’ to the word Porrn this made it not so harsh, got people thinking once they heard the company name but also didn’t find it all together offensive. Well everyone that I have been in contact with chuckles.

Blockchain technology explained

O

megachain is a black-owned blockchain, digital and technology consultancy dedicated to industry. Our specialist and experienced team works with SME to large organisations to ensure their change and digital transformation ambitions deliver tangible business outcomes. We consult, develop, implement and deploy IT, digital, blockchain and digital forensics solutions for businesses and organisation. The biggest thing that drove us to get into blockchain was the fact that as a people of Africa and it’s Diaspora, we saw very quickly that we were under-represented and sadly we still are! This technology can solve many issues in the African Diaspora as it allows untrusted parties to transact in a trustworthy and transparent way. This we know historically has been hard to do and this collective has suffered as a result. Our values Our services with our client’s centre on our three core values: Insight. We have extensive industry and consulting experience working in several sectors. Intelligence We recognise that data is the cornerstone to create new business opportunities. We put data intelligence at the heart of problem-solving to ensure your solutions are optimised for revenue generation. Innovation New technologies enable easier business operation. We are constantly scouting technology, start-up communities and advise our clients on how to work with new partners. We recommend innovative collaboration strategies connecting you to start ups that are rethinking services in your industry. Obviously, the biggest question we often get is what the heck is Blockchain? In simple words, Blockchain can be defined as a chain of the block that contains information. The technique is intended to timestamp digital documents so that it’s not possible to backdate them or tamper with them. Blockchain is a shared, immutable ledger that facilitates the process of recording transactions and tracking of assets in a business network or eco-system. An asset can be something tangible like (a car, house, land, cash etc.) or intangible (patents, copyrights, intellectual property, branding etc.). Nearly everything of value can be tracked and traded on a blockchain network, reducing risk and cutting costs for all. Why is blockchain going to be the trusted way of doing business for the future? Blockchain enhances trust across businesses not because you cannot trust your business network, but because you will not need to. Technology can be used to replace the middle person involved in mitigation between businesses, when there is a need for the transaction of assets. The technology platforms for blockchain will be sold as packages to businesses and will become the

platform that a lot of businesses will perform transactions. We as African people and people of this descent need to be in control of our own networks which will be vital, especially to see costs savings and improvements in risk management. How can businesses take advantage of blockchain technology? 1. Smart contracts: Here, a set of pre-defined conditions has to be met if the transaction has to get validated. Upon meeting the conditions, the actions are automatically triggered. Say, for example, in the insurance-claim payout. The insurance provider can set the conditions to be met for insurance claims. The amount is transferred only if the consumer’s claims satisfy the conditions set in the contract. Other areas where it can be implemented are music releases, cash-equity trading and so on. 2. Static registry: Here the ledger consists of records that are stored as a reference purpose. Take, for instance, the land title. There are many cases of ambiguity in title ownership. With blockchain technology, the records once stored cannot be altered. Any changes are time stamped. In case of dispute, the title can be tracked through the path of origin. The other places where it can be used are in patents, research articles, and food safety & origin ledgers. 3. Identity: This is similar to the static registry. But this forms a separate case due to the identity-related information stored. The segments where it can be used are for identity frauds, voting, civil registry, police records, and court cases. 4. Dynamic registry: The ledger, in this case, keeps updating as goods/services are exchanged on the digital platform. The best use case is in a drug-supply chain. The supply of drugs right from the manufacturer to the distributor and finally to the drug store can be mapped. The updates provide information on the movement of drugs and this can be used to stop the supply of counterfeit drugs in the market. 5. Payment registry: This is a dynamic registry that updates as the cash or cryptocurrency payments are made on the network. This is advantageous for international payments in business. Another big thing for us is stripping away the jargon out of blockchain. It is a real ‘techy speak’ space at the moment and what our company does is to identify a customer’s needs and to see if a blockchain will be of benefit to their business.

erosoul Limited has been at the forefront of both fashion and music since 1998. Being both established and ever-growing, places Aerosoul in a unique position in both these worlds, always ready to react to and invigorate trends, but also being a trusted brand name which customers and trade partners can turn to. Founder & Designer Leke Adesoye founded the brand after training at the London College of Fashion, bringing together two of his driving passions, music, in the form of underground jungle, hip-hop, soul and breakbeat, and fashion, realising his dream of creating an exclusive urban streetwear company. Throughout the next 17 years, Aerosoul has established itself and has gone on to achieve more than any other similar brand. The defining ethos of Aerosoul is combining music and fashion, by capturing the ener-

gy of the music by design, branding, and ultimately, clothing. Original, highly sought-after exclusive urban streetwear is the result, including the now-iconic Junglist Movement t-shirt. The brand has taken on an international presence, and is worn across the globe by the very biggest names in urban music and beyond, and famously immortalised in the cult-classic 90’s film Human Traffic And the British urban crime drama thriller Deadmeat. unning your own business is no easy feat. But when you’re armed with a passion for your craft, a solid team of professionals with a dedication to pull off everything from small to large scale projects, anything is possible. This is the case for 26-year-old carpenter Asher Edwards, the founder of Final Finish Woodwork. The south-east London based business, specialises in providing first class craftsmanship across an array of residential and commercial projects. The company was officially launched in January 2019, seven years after Edwards initial entry into carpentry, which be-

Homes, I was in control of building 900 flats and when they sold one of those flats, they would go for £1.2 million each,” he said. “I sat back and thought ‘damn I’m making someone else filthy rich’. That was one of the catalysts that made me think I should do my own thing.” The Londoner launched headfirst into starting his company, without a plan but a passion to succeed. “I quit my job, went to France for 2-3 weeks, came back and was like let’s do this. I spent a week trying to figure out a name and just branding myself properly.

“People share my pictures, it buzzes around and that’s how most of my work came in initially”

gun whilst attending secondary school. “When I was in school, I was selected to take part in a scheme where they’d pick 4-5 kids and send them to college where they would learnt different trades. We were selected because we had difficulties with school - I’m dyslexic,” said Edwards. “So we would have the option of learning different trades from plumbing to electrical, but it was there that I first took a liking to carpentry. Following school, I went to Lewisham College and did two years of carpentry. While I was there, a guy randomly came in and asked for CVs from students. Despite the little experience I had, I sent him my CV, he liked it and I started working for him.” Edwards’ skills were nurtured under the tutelage of his mentor, before he tried his hand at carpentry as a sole trader and then taking on the role of site manager for Galliard Homes, which saw him manage extensive projects from developing apartments in Canary Wharf to homes on the outskirts of London. But it wasn’t long before the desire seed of running his own company began to grow. “While I was working at Galliard

Instagram. People saw it and from there and it spread like wildfire and more people reached out to me.” Social media plays a large role in the marketing for Final Finish Woodwork, as Edwards priortises sharing his work on platforms like Instagram, which has a vast construction and carpentry community. “Everything I do I put on my Instagram and it spreads like that. The construction scene on Instagram is pretty huge but you wouldn’t know unless you’re in it,” he said. “People share my pictures, it buzzes around and that’s how most of my work came in initially.” With the business growing from strength to strength, Edwards has high hopes for the future. “My plan is world domination! It’s not easy and I put a lot of pressure on myself but that’s how I get things done.” n Website: www.finalfinishwoodwork.co.uk Instagram: @final_finish_woodwork Email: asher@ nal- nish.co.uk Phone: 07716501676

Why we must keep supporting black businesses

A

ecent years have seen black-owned British businesses successfully plug gaps in the market and develop innovative new products. These products have provided solutions for problems faced by millions of customers in the UK. Across a wide range of products and services, these businesses are offering diversity, new ideas and great customer service in just about every other consumer sector. Changes in the media and marketing landscape, most notably the growth of social media and online retail, have also helped these companies bypass chain store buyers and high street limitations and reach huge numbers of buyers with their products. Yet despite this success black-owned businesses still tend to be unsupported by the communities from which they emerge. According to statistics compiled by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising the spending power of Britain’s black communities in worth and estimated £300 billion. TRANSFORM However, on the other side of this impressive figure is the fact that that very little of this impressive amount remains with us. Daniel Lister, Founder of My Black Market, estimates that African Caribbeans spend 95 per cent of their income outside the community. We stand to greatly benefit if more of this huge amount were spent with black-owned businesses. Why? Because what this does is help transform our income and spending power into wealth. This wealth can be redirected into projects that support people of African Caribbean heritage. In the UK today deep-seated racial inequality has produced stark disparities between different ethnic communities. Black people are under-represented at senior levels of industry and the public services. The unemployment rate for BAME people of working age is nearly double that for white British groups

– 8 per cent compared with 4.6 per cent according to recent government figures. Experts from the Centre for Social Investigation at the University of Oxford said recently that black Britons face “shocking” discrimination in the labour market at levels unchanged since the late 1960s. ENCOURAGING Facts such as these show why it is important to create opportunities for black people from within their own communities. Too often their ambitions and goals are thwarted by discrimination and prejudice. Supporting black businesses mean that they grow. This then means they are able to employ staff in greater numbers and help reduce the unemployment faced by black people in the UK. African Caribbean enterprises are already playing an important role in creating jobs. Figures released last year show that more than 55,000 businesses have been launched with the help of government startup loans since 2012 creating more than 66,000 jobs. One in five of these are black-owned. Given the widening wealth gap between people from black and minority ethnic communities and others it’s important to spread the message that we should invest in our future by encouraging each other to support our businesses. If we seriously want to deal with the challenging issues that face our community, we must first strengthen our collective economic position. This means working cooperatively. As the statistics indicate, there is significant wealth in the black community. We must learn to channel this economic power by supporting our entrepreneurs. In turn this will create much-needed opportunities and employment for future generations without going outside our community. n

Companies founded by amazing Forget about those lists of entrepreneurs under the age of 30 who have built successful businesses – it’s even more impressive to hear about entrepreneurs who are even younger. Some of the entrepreneurs on this are not old enough to drive or vote but they’re running their own successful companies. By Vic Motune

Callum Daniel

is a 10-year-old who is setting the world of robotics alight. He runs his own successful company called iCodeRobots, teaching kids between the ages of six and 12 how to write code as building and coding his own robots. His mother, Dionne Daniel, bought her son a Meccanoid G15 KS personal robot, which took him just four weeks to build. She added: “From there, he realised that not only did he love robots, but he could build them – and that’s where it all began.” iCodeRobots employs robotic engineers and students from universities and colleges. Speaking about the company Callum says: “My motivation for setting up this company is to make robotic classes affordable and fun, so other children get a chance to experience the happiness I do, and the skills and self-esteem I gain making and coding robots.”

Inspiring Vanessa

is not your average 12-year-old girl. She is an international multi-award winning motivational speaker, entrepreneur, YouTube star and author of two books. Her entrepreneurial journey began when she was only 9 years old and has gone on to become one of the youngest motivational speakers in the UK. Vanessa has been mentored by several top international speak-

ers and has spoken in front of thousands of people around the word. “I started my motivational speaking career at a Parent Talk, which I went to with my mum – one of the parents told me to come on stage and speak with them. I pushed myself to do it and I was completely comfortable which I didn’t expect from myself,” she recalls.

young entrepreneurs Vanessa’s mother Veronika Sam explained that although immensely proud of her daughter’s achievements, she never however envisaged achieving success so quickly. “At nine years old when your child approaches you about wanting to start her own YouTube channel, I think a lot of parents would shut their child down by telling them they are too young” she says. “But I didn’t want to shut down her dream and three years later, we’ve travelled the world and the messages she gets on how much she inspires people are wonderful.”

ties, charity events, christenings and holy communions. Shae and his team were invited to attend a school assembly to share and showcase Shae Bunnies with a short question and answer session which encouraged other children to start thinking creatively of things they could do to start their own business. Mum Ashley says: “Shae understands the importance of hard work and the fact that nothing comes easy. He is actively involved in his business helping to prepare for and set up at events. And he is very creative constantly sharing suggestions and ideas to improve the services that Shae Bunnies offer.”

Paris Reveira

Increasing numbers of black and minority ethnic women are embracing their natural hair. However it can be a struggle to maintain, something that inspired 21-year-old entrepreneur Paris Reveira to set up her company That Good Hair. It produces customisable hair products such as shampoos and conditioners for curly hair. Customers get to choose the ingredients such as aloe vera, castor oil and rose water that go inside the hair product. The products of the growing business are sold online. Reveira says: “As a curly haired individual, I know that it can be a struggle to manage and maintain my hair as there are only two options, DIY concoctions or trial and error with expensive products. My company mixes these two options to create customisable products. “I want to teach people about their hair and allow them to get involved and really understand what they are putting on their body and change the world one curl at a time.”

Shae Brown, Shae Bunnies

Shae Brown is the 9-year-old mastermind behind Shae Bunnies. The idea to set up the south London based company was inspired by his pet rabbits. Shae Bunnies provides a unique out of farm rabbit experience for children of all ages and their families. During time spent with Shae Bunnies children of all ages get to experience what it would be like to have their own, groom and feed a pet rabbit. The Soap Connoisseur understands that individuals want the best for their skin as it changes throughout the life cycle. My range of eco-friendly skin food is created to nourish nurture and feed the skin.

CULTURAL HERITAGE There is a wisdom in the stories that our grandmothers tell us. It’s the medicine of generations. The stories of our collective pasts, and the hope for our future. The world of birth is not new and neither is the work of the birthkeeper. When you decide to become an Abuela doula, you will be encouraged to reach back into your cultural heritage to bring forward the traditions of your mothers and your mothers’ mothers. The role of a doula is to support and to be with women as they travel through pregnancy, birth and those early postnatal days. To sit in and share the wisdom of the Abuelas, the grandmothers. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.” Marianne Williamson

South Londoner Tracey Newell’s cake decorating business grew from a hobby. Yinka Sunmonu reports

ugar craft expert, interior designer and architect Tracey Newell started baking in the 1990s coinciding with her niece’s birthday and her desire to create a cake. It was the start of a hobby that would pay towards her university tuition as she studied architecture at Westminster University and future businesses. On graduation, she joined the architectural firm Austin, Smith, Lord where she gained experience and the belief, years later, to start her own business. She formed Newell ARC Interiors in 2004 listing Sainsbury’s, Ikea and the Sultan of Oman among her clients. When the recession hit, she decided to focus on cake decorating.

her businesses. Days can be long. “You can’t shy away from hard work because business is not easy and you really need to know your strengths and focus on those,” she said. “You also need to adapt to change. When I started, there was no such thing as Instagram!”

“You can’t shy away from hard work because business is not easy and you really need to know your strengths and focus on those”

NEIGHBOURHOOD In 2012, she opened the Sugar Craft Boutique in Dulwich, south London, where customers can order cakes and buy cake decorating equipment. The shop design and layout mirror her experience as an architect and interior decorator making it a distinctive shop with neighbourhood appeal. Growing and maintaining one’s customer is something Newell is consistent about and she is always thinking of ways to enhance

PRACTICAL Newell uses social media with great effect. Instagram is one of her mediums for cake designs and tips. She posts images online and signposts customers to the items available in store. Away from design, Newell maintains the practical aspects of the business including finances, record keeping and planning. Following customer demand, Newell opened the Artist Cake Studio in Sydenham, London, in 2018. There she teaches cake decorating, hosts masterclasses, runs a course on how to run your own cake business. When it comes to business, Newell is focused. She knows what she wants and explores ways to achieve it. One of her tips for success is research and it is not confined to knowing the market. “You need to research and discover yourself and use that information for your business” she said. n

Renee Ekpe was always a tall girl, towering high above the other kids, and learnt early to embrace my height which comes with very long legs. Puberty brought in a new awareness especially as school uniforms were usually shorter. That’s when her struggle with tights began... They were usually the wrong colour and too short, making them ride down with body movement. This caused me anxiety and a sense of trepidation. The solution became the purchase of tights 2 sizes up, though these were long enough, they were too loose, made me look clumsy and still fell off my tiny waist. This was becoming a full-blown crisis! The good news however, is that in the midst of this, a dream was born. A new Perspective of helping... INDEPENDENT ADVICE

MORTGAGE PRODUCTS

MORTGAGE BASICS

MORTGAGE CALCULATER

HOLISTIC MORTGAGE ADVISOR Patrick Brown is a ‘Whole of Market’ Mortgage Broker. Over the past 20 years, he has worked for two large High Street Banks and smaller Independent Mortgage Companies providing Mortgage advice. He currently owns a Mortgage Company – Wembley Mortgage Centre, which is fully regulated and authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority. A highly experienced consultant in the arrangement of Residential, Buy to Let and Commercial Mortgages; Patrick is known as being a highly trusted Holistic Mortgage Advisor, with excellent empathic, interpersonal and communicative skills. What is a Mortgage Broker and what do they do? A qualified Mortgage Broker is a financial advisor that specialises in Mortgages. They work to find the right mortgage with rates that matches the budget of their clients. Basing recommendations on the individual circumstances of his clients, considering such factors as; • Salaries • Size of their deposit • Monthly payment preferences • Interest Rates • Credit History and Outgoings

What are ‘Whole of Market’ Mortgage Brokers? A ‘whole of market’ broker covers much more of the market when compared to a “tied” advisor/broker who works for a Bank. A tied advisor/broker can only access mortgage products from the lender they work for. For example, if a mortgage broker is employed by a High Street Bank, this Broker can only provide advice on mortgage products of that Bank. However, a “whole of market” Broker as no links to a specific mortgage lender and is not limited to a single lender or group of lenders. This allows access to a much greater pool of mortgage options the freedom to approach any lender from the ‘whole of the market’. What are the advantages of using Mortgage Broker? Mortgage Brokers can access multiple lenders to find the best rates and lowest fees, allowing them to be able to provide more options for people with adverse credit. Brokers are trained, qualified professionals with extensive knowledge of their field with great familiarity with the background criteria of each lender. Most of all, they are employed by you the client, and not the lender.

SN Travel Director, Sandra Dyer with a customer that has been booking for over 35 years

Successfully running a business for 45 years

S

N Travel is a family run business that played a key part in helping the Windrush Generation return home to the Caribbean to visit their families. Back in the late 1960s and early 70s, there was limited aircraft travel to the Caribbean on commercial airlines but there was a high demand for flights from migrants that wanted to go home to visit their relatives. SPECIALIST At this time, Leslie Joseph, founder of SN Travel, was a part of the Caribbean Association in London, he wanted to help people return to the Caribbean to see their loved ones. So, in 1968 he arranged a charter plane to fly everyone home so migrants

could spend Christmas together with their families. After that the word quickly spread and he was inundated with people asking when the next Caribbean flight would be. To cater to this high demand, in 1973 Leslie started Stoke Newington Travel, a Caribbean specialist travel agency. Stoke Newington Travel soon found themselves catering to generations of Windrush families, as they do to this day. SN Travel has a very close relationship with their customers as many clients have been booking for over 30 years and now their children and even their children’s children are also SN Travel customers. Over the years the business has become very popular and Leslie’s two daughters later came to work alongside him. This small

London based travel agency has gone from strength to strength, branching out into Caribbean holidays, then into worldwide holidays and today offers cruises, affordable yacht holidays, destination weddings and honeymoons. SN Travel remains family run business that has been successfully running now for 45 years. Offering a unique, personal touch, SN Travel are a different breed of travel agents that really take care of their customers and are very proud of their heritage. SN Travel will plan the perfect holiday for you – at the perfect price, and you can pay the balance in instalments. n Contact SN Travel today for a deal on your next holiday. www.sntravel.co.uk.

4 practical tips

for starting a business There is a wide range of reasons why people start a business. But one thing remains the same – success requires careful planning and preparation. Here Chima Obieze provides some practical tips nexpensive technology, quick access to information, the ability to raise funds through means such as crowdsourcing and access to markets all over the world all mean that it’s now a great time to start a business. In the last decade, technology has levelled the playing field for smaller business owners who want to make an impact. However starting a successful business involves looking at some other important factors and developing a plan based on them. If you are thinking about stating a business, below is a quick guide to some factors you should be thinking about:

I

1 KEEP YOUR DAY JOB

Consider starting your business part-time, especially if it’s online. It usually takes six months to a year to get a business going so you don’t want your ability to pay your mortgage or keep your family financially secure hinge on your company being an overnight success. Start with what you can manage, financially and time-wise, and scale up as your business grows.

2 FIND A PROFITABLE NICHE

The days of general stores are over, especially online. Shoppers are looking for stores that specialize. You have to find a market of people that need something specific but can’t get it at the big chain stores.

It’s difficult for businesses just starting out to compete with the big guys, so you have to find where the big guys aren’t and develop profitable niches.

3 BE VISIBLE ONLINE

Even if you’re not planning to start an online business, you have to consider the important role that the internet can play in your company’s success. Having an online presence eliminates the limitations of physical location and broadens your customer base by, literally, millions. It’s also a great tool for promoting yourself and letting people, even in your own area, know that you’re there, and what you’re doing.

4 NEVER GIVE UP

Successful entrepreneurship requires creativity, energy, and a drive to keep going when you fail. Few people realize that before Bill Gates created the extremely successful Microsoft 3.0, he created a Microsoft 1.0 and 2.0, both of which flopped but he kept at it. And that determination and refusal to give up is what will separate successful entrepreneurs from unsuccessful ones. Arm yourself with optimism and realise there is nothing wrong in failure just be sure to learn from your mistakes.

Using his passion to

change lives!

LOOK GOOD AND FEEL GOOD My name is Josiah Dawkins, CEO & Managing Director of Ace Barbers which was founded in 2010. Based in Aston, Birmingham and is one of the few successful black owned businesses within the area. In addition to this Ace Barbers is reported to be one of the biggest barber shops in the UK at 85 square feet. From the age of 14 I developed an interest in cutting hair and found that my artistic and creative skills and abilities further developed through this new found passion. My love for art is expressed through my everyday barbering and over the years my skills have continued to develop and be refined and I have a good eye for detail and precision. I am keen on self-development and am always seeking to better myself and upskill myself and team. I was delighted and honored to have been recognised with the award of hair treatment specialist of the year 2019 by Livewire Prestige Awards. In closing I would like to say to all, young and old ‘You have to believe in yourself and always be willing to take risks in order to achieve success’. “Be your best”

Josiah the Barber

F

rom Belgium, to Amsterdam to Sweden, Josiah Dawkins aka Josiah the barber is known internationally for his niche barbering service. Dawkins has had a passion for barbering since 14. Continued dedication to detail and precision with a unique creative flair meant Dawkins was quick to establish a name for himself. So much so that he was named Hair Treatment Specialist of the Year 2019 by Livewire Prestige Awards. But that was not all for Dawkins. As his career as a professional barber progressed, he noticed the dampening effect hair loss can have on a mans confidence and sought to resolve the problem. Whilst he knew there are a number of temporary fixes available across the UK he wanted to provide men with an affordable and permanent solution. After taking two classes in the US, Dawkins began to specialise in non surgical hair transplants. His custom hair units work similarly to a toupee, but of course, dedicated Dawkins goes the extra mile, taking the time to cut and fade the hair piece to create a unique, realistic and lasting fit for each customer. As his business continues to grow, Josiah hopes to relocate from Birmingham to London. In light of this, Josiah has started running courses to teach aspiring barbers his niche trade. He hopes this will allow him to expand further and satisfy the requests of his many customers begging him to open up more branches across the UK. n

ameese Davis is an innovative Birmingham based entrepreneur who has launched her own Afro haircare brand to help African Caribbean women find an easy solution to managing their hair. Frustrated with trying to find products that were suitable for her daughter’s hair, who suffers with eczema and sensitive skin, Davis worked tirelessly to investigate the science and structure of back hair to create a healthy and affordable product that met the specific needs of Afro and curly hair, which was also kind to skin. In 2017, her company Nylah Naturals was born. She has since created an industry leading product range, which has won a number of awards. But Davis didn’t stop there. She is committed to bettering the lives of disadvantaged children and recently launched the ‘Untangled’ project to assist foster carers and young girls currently living in care homes in learning to look after their hair. IDENTITY The 6-week programme was officially launched at Birmingham’s Hallmark Hotel in May. Research has shown that black and mixed heritage children are over- represented in the British care system. Conversely, in many areas of the UK there is also a shortage of foster carers who are of the same cultural or ethnic background as children requiring care. Untangled is the first initiative of its kind. The comprehensive programme will incorporate insightful lessons from hair professionals and key speakers from the fields of personal development, cultural identity, black hair care, dermatology and trichology, to help foster carers and social workers fully understand how to care for Afro hair. Kameese says: “Having previously worked with and looked after children in various capacities for over 18 years, including roles as a back-up carer to family members and friends and an

The chef giving Huddersfield’s food a Caribbean flavour Simon Brown is winning over a new audience with his Jerk House restaurant

Profile

By Vic Motune

ver the past five years, there’s been a marked rise in ‘Caribbean-inspired’ cuisine, food that pivots from the usual and targets a broader clientele. The success of restaurants such as Turtle Bay, Sugar Dumplin, the Rum Kitchen and Cottons have led the charge to a growing awareness of Caribbean food. It is a trend that inspired Huddersfield entrepreneur Simon Brown, owner of the town’s successful Jerk House restaurant and take-away. Although there are a number of Caribbean eateries in the area, Brown was determined he was going to do things differently when he launched five years ago. “From day one I was intent on targeting a mainstream audience” he recalls. “African Caribbean people are very fussy when it comes to their food because they’ve grown up with it. And what they expect from it is not what the average white person would expect from the food. The chefs that I had in from Jamaica cooked the food on a level that a Caribbean person would expect.” When Brown decided to become the Jerk House’s main chef he made a conscious decision to prepare food in a way that many Caribbean food outlets would not consider. “You’ve got to bear in mind that most white people who have never tried Caribbean food, the first thing they will ask is ‘is it spicy?’. So me as the chef I cook for a medium palette. If you look at Asian food which has been popular in the UK for the last fifty years, what they’ve done is to evolve their food. “So, for example white diners understand what’s really hot and

spicy and what is mild. You can have a chicken korma which is mild or a chicken vindaloo which is really hot. But with West Indian food there is no option There isn’t a mild version of jerk chicken and a hot version of jerk chicken. He adds: “I think Caribbean food needs to evolve to that level where it can appeal to different markets.” However Brown, whose family hails from Jamaica, says he is unmoved by critics who claim he is not producing authentic Caribbean cuisine. “I know what’s real and I know what’s fake. And I also know I’m producing quality food” he says. “If you’re one of those bad minded people just critiquing my food for the sake of it then do that but I can recognise you as someone who is just full of negativity. But I welcome critiques because I will only gain strength from that. n

UK Black Business GUIDE 2019-20

Look out for The Voice Black Business Fair in December

T

he Voice will continue to highlight the efforts of black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs across the UK later this year by staging the second Black Business Fair at Lambeth Town Hall, in the heart of Brixton, South London, on Saturday, December 7. This follows on the success of the first Fair at the same venue which had close to 60 stall holders who were able to sell their products and services to over 1,000 eager consumers who recorded an average spend of approximately £200 each.

itor said: “It was lovely to see so many thriving and emerging black business in one space, very inspiring.” The stall holders who participated in the Fair were pleased with the outcome on the day. A few gave their feedback as follows: “It’s a good initiative, but will need a bigger venue”. Another said: “Very well organised and good attendance.”

“This year’s Business Fair will be bigger and better with CONSUMERS Plans are already high gear to stage the secmore stalls and ond Business Fair whichin will be building on the sucspace” cess of last year. It will be bigger and better with more

an opportunity to invest in our community. In 2018, more than 55,000 businesses had been launched with the help of government start-up loans since 2012, with one in five of these enterprises being black-owned. The Voice sees this progress as something to be proud of and to support, hence why the idea of a Black Business Fair is a great platform to showcase these self-financed, innovative, small business enterprises. Speaking at last year’s event, Councillor Donatus Anyanwu of Coldharbour Ward in Lambeth said: “Having a business fair in Brixton, particularly the town hall, demonstrates the importance of our community having a place they can call home. I think this is the best thing, for me that have happened in the Town Hall for many years.” EMERGING

And many of the visitors welcomed the Fair and gave their feedback on the day’s activities. Among the comments were: “It was very interesting, I learned a lot and I love coming to support our black community.” Another said: “The fair produced a great atmosphere and variety of products”, while another vis-
