Voice Interview Andrea Richards
VOICE BLACK BUSINESS INTERVIEW:
Andrea L Richards of Accounts Navigator Associates
Established since 2003 we are a modern digital accountancy firm supporting Entrepreneurs, Charities, Artisans, Entertainers and Property businesses to skilfully navigate towards business growth and success.
VBBG: How did you grow from working by yourself to having an office and a team?
Andrea: I made the decision to run my own business when I was made redundant from my job. I started doing freelance jobs for various businesses and gradually the businesses started building up - I found myself working 18 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep up. As my client base grew, I decided to take on my first member of staff in 2011, and from there I have built a tightknit and reliable team who are dedicated to getting the job done to a high standard
VBBG: How did you/do you grow your business?
Andrea: When I started Accounts Navigator in 2003, it was just me, on my own. The growth of my dedicated team has allowed me to focus on bettering myself and the business - I have transi-
Andrea L Richards
tioned from working for my business, to working on my business through marketing and networking.
VBBG: What advice would you give to people struggling with what other people think?
Andrea: As a woman in the industry, I often find people try to ‘undermine’ or not take me seriously. I’ve worked hard to build up my business and grow in the sector, so for people struggling with what other people think remember where you started and how far you have come – nobody can take that away from you.
VBBG: What you think can be done to break down the many barriers black business owners, especially female owners face?
Andrea: Working in a sector dominated by older, white men I used to struggle with finding my place in the market. I didn’t show my face alongside my business for years because I felt that I “didn’t belong” in this business. However I recently made the decision to challenge stereotypes every day ; yes EVERY SINGLE DAY, because I am not what people picture when they think “accountant” or “business owner”. I am a prime example of why you should never judge a book by its cover and I recommend other female business owners do the same. n

STERLING WINSHAW
Passion for fashion
Founded in 2017, three young visionaries Deejay Elmi, Reggie Millah and Ozzy Cherfa wanted to come together and create a brand with a meaning, something you can always associate with a way of life. Three very different individuals in terms of culture and upbringing had one thing in common with their friendship and their everyday way of life; being sincere to anyone that crosses their path.
We soon developed a passion for fashion and saw we had something great and wanted the world to see what three local boys from North West London could do, when we came together instead of against each other.
We loved fashion and taught ourselves on the world of fashion and how we could get our ideas onto clothing. After many sleepless nights with determination we did that, successfully reaching out to the whole of London.
Even though it was successful, life would take us separate ways and our input in what we had dropped so we did not push the brand to its full potential.
In 2019, we decided to come back as we missed the feeling of seeing our brand around the UK and brought it back ten times over.
In 2020 we opened our first Headquarters in Neasden, London with a hunger that overcame anything that we have previously had.
We aim to motivate other young kids to know that if you come together you can build something that you never thought you could.
We are a business that believes in community. With over 20 years’ experience serving our diverse communities throughout the United Kingdom, we have come to know that community is the hearbeat of what we do. Our aims have always been to listen to what our clients need and, as best as possible, provide the services and expertise that are necessary to meet your needs. Despite the amount of changes, we have faced recently, our ethos is exactly the same. Therefore, having listened to your concerns and understood your needs, we, at Sterling Winshaw Solicitors, are proud to offer our services in the following areas.
v Crime v Commercial v Family v Housing & Property v Immigration v Wills & Probate
Whether your relationship has broken down and you want to maintain contact with your children or you are in social housing and the conditions of your home are below what is acceptable we can be there for you to help you understand your rights and how to go about establishing those rights.
Perhaps the pandemic has you thinking about your own mortality and want to draft a will, or you want to see the options you have of brining a love-one to the UK, we can navigate you through the law and advise you as to your best options.
Whatever your legal enquiry may be, drop a call or an email and we can arrange a free consultation with you to explore all your options.
We’re here to help.

Failures and Setbacks are an inevitable part of life. I have found this out from personal experience. One of my failures, losing my job has taken me on my current journey of hosting the podcast “My Perfect Failure”. Losing my job, began my fascination with failures and setbacks. What makes Oprah, Jay Z and Michael Jordan different from me, you, the man on the tube the woman on the street.
To date, I have been blessed to have the most amazing guests who consistently provide so many answers and insights to the numerous questions I throw at them around failure and success on each episode. Consistently these guys connect the dots revealing the close relationship between failure and success.
Guests routinely share their remarkable and personal stories, sharing how they have come back successfully from the most extreme situations.
The subjects we cover range from imposter syndrome, growth mindset, self-sabotage, resilience, rebounding, behaviour change to name a few,
What has become abundantly clear from My Perfect Failure is that failures and setbacks need not be our enemy or indeed terminal. Success and Failure go together, they were never meant to be separated. Have you ever met a successful person that hasn’t failed? That would be extremely unlikely or most likely impossible.
The trick is not to get side-tracked by our failures, instead focus on our growth during this process. Look out for the learnings and the gifts that failures always leaves in its wake.
Don’t take my word for it, just ask. Oprah, Jay Z and Michael Jordan or anybody else you admire. Failure is never the end, merely life presenting us with a new way, an alternative, a new opportunity all we have to do is seize the moment. n

Trevor Robinson OBE, Executive Creative Director and Founder of Quiet Storm and Create Not Hate speaks about his journey in the advertising industry and how 2020 was the year he decided to reignite Create Not Hate - his way of addressing the lack of diversity in the creative industries.
A6’2” story-telling, Guinness-drinking, bigthinking, creative genius. Trevor’s humour is dark and sometimes twisted. He argues this is important when working in an industry that’s about thinking outside the box with explosive ideas. He is funny and modest, and after thirty years in the advertising industry, remains one of few senior black creatives in Britain.
“Growing up on the Notre Dame Estate in Clapham in the early ‘80s was an interesting time. It was exciting but the political climate was unsettled: the Cold War was at its peak and social division played out on the streets. This seemed to forge our collective creativity. My influences ranged from music – punk, ska, and soul – through to the alternative comedians that created such a great sense of energy.”
“My mum came over to Britain in the ‘50s, and a lot of her humour was based on hardship, on conflict, on growing up in a racist environment. I definitely inherited that humour. And also the resilience that it is intrinsically linked to it.” Trevor didn’t love school. He was usually one of the mouthy students at the back of the class, testing the patience of his teachers. Something that stuck with him throughout his working life is a conversation he had with his career adviser at school. He said he’d like to do something creative, she said that his best option was to become a bus driver. He was eleven.
The anger he felt in that moment has acted as a spur for Trevor throughout his career. Whether it was looking for a job or trying to win a pitch, it’s stayed with him: a constant driving force. This resilience has undoubtedly contributed to his hugely successful career, from his famous ‘You’ve been Tango’d’ advert of the 90s to his most recent ‘Kids’ Voices’ campaign for Haribo. His creative work reflects his humour: “Me and my creative partner, Al Young, wanted to take the piss out of cause and effect advertising and really catch people’s imagination.” Despite the advice of his school careers adviser, he’s taken his chances in the advertising industry. After building an impressive portfolio, weaving in and out of work and being on the dole, Trevor and Al became well known and respected in the industry. In 1995 Trevor set up Quiet Storm, the UK’s first agency to write, direct and produce its own work. It’s now a top 100 agency, and as a boutique independent, punches well above its weight in terms of international footprint and billings.
“What I love about Quiet Storm is everyone is fighting for the same thing, and it makes us quite a potent weapon when it comes to pitches and creating new work. There’s absolutely no room to hide in a smaller business, so you end up with people who are bloody brilliant.” Quiet Storm have a history of supporting social causes and doing pro-bono work for good. They were behind Project Embrace, a campaign which addressed afro visibility in the media, as well as a hugely successful Operation Black Vote which saw record numbers of votes. The agency celebrated its 25th birthday in 2020. While it was unable to party in true adland style due to the pandemic, 2020 was the year which saw Trevor and his wife and business partner Rania (CEO of Quiet Storm and co-director of CNH) reignite Create Not Hate. Create Not Hate was an initiative originally started by Trevor in 2007 in response to the murder of a young black man at his old school. He wanted to get young people affected by gang related violence into creative industries by showing them the ropes. In 2020 the murder of George Floyd highlighted global racial inequality. For British advertising it shone a bright light on the lack of diversity in the industry. “It is shameful and a waste to both parties. The industry is missing out on talent that is going into other industries, and talented young creatives of colour are missing out on even being aware of these opportunities.” Create Not Hate is an initiative where both parties benefit. Young people get to understand the virtues of an industry that has long been invisible and inaccessible to them through workshops, mentoring and industry opportunities. The industry gets fresh thinking, unstrained talent.
Trevor feels strongly that people should see initiatives which aim to diversify the industry through this lens of balance and equality – a lens that is not tainted by impressions of charity or pity. “It’s important people understand it’s not moralistic to diversify your workforce. It benefits your company. Work is more contemporary, surprising, exciting. Diverse perspectives are often more engaged with the outside world. How can you be doing advertising for the nation when you only have one voice?”
The irony that the advertising industry often excludes most of the people that brands are trying to connect with, is not lost on Trevor’s peers. Many agency leaders have been highly supportive of Create Not Hate, offering their own time and resource and pledging to address the lack of diversity within their own agencies. It is becoming widely acknowledged that advertising cannot survive inside a distorted homogeneous bubble. Both Trevor and Rania are regular industry speakers and judges. They often talk about the importance of diversity and inclusion to both business and society. Trevor was awarded an OBE in 2009 for his services to advertising. Last year he won the UK Black British Business Award for top Senior Entrepreneur.
The revived Create Not Hate brief focused on anti-racism. Over 200 young people took part in the programme which resulted in multimedia campaign, ‘Check Your Prejudice’. This consisted of two short films, posters (included within this paper), t-shirts and face masks, and was launched on Notting Hill Carnival weekend, a celebration of black history, excellence, and futures. All the work was conceived and created by the young people.
The campaign achieved a reach of 500 million with £0 spent and was shared far and wide on social media. As part of the re-launch, CNH was set up as a non-profit, Community Interest Company. This will ensure sustainability and enable them to continue to run programmes for young people every year. The focus of the briefs will change but continue to address important social issues. CNH just need to secure funding. Quiet Storm have recently offered a placement to one of the 2020 cohort, Emmanuel Areoye, who starts work with them in June.
“If we can get the whole industry behind us for the long run – to understand the benefits of diversity and getting behind initiatives like Create Not Hate – this is the sort of creative collaboration that will sustain advertising’s future. We don’t need empty mission statements and black squares. We need change. The world is uncomfortable and unstable and, while unsettling, from uncertainty can come great creativity. I’ve had a long and successful career. I want to share the love and pass on the baton to the next generation.”

Victoria Barrow Williams co founder PDC
We work alongside South East Creative
Business support programme, after they realised the huge disparities they had in working with black and brown business in the creative industries. ‘We black folk are formidable, immensely creative, and lean into everything we do, however when it comes to independent business we lack the information, experience, access to finance and opportunities to sometimes realise the ideas we birth’ Kelly Abbott co founder PDC.
Margate Radio is a community station, director Paul Camo says “having the support system of Black Dreams Matter is invaluable it’s even more inspiring coming from a black led organisation.
“I cannot express enough how much this program is needed. Our community desperately needs to learn lifelong strategies that will develop actionable steps towards our successes in business. I am proud and honoured to be one of the first to benefit from the programme”. n

Transforming Brexit Challenges into Opportunities for Growth
Now that the UK has fully exited the EU¹, its international relations are on a new footing. In this vein, relationships between the UK and ACP² countries also had to adjust.
There are emerging debates about what this new chapter in international relations means for
British companies, as progress takes shape on several fronts, and realities are forged that largely vary per sector.
Firstly, and foremostly, the UK’s withdrawal from the EU customs union and single market has had important implications for British companies trading with ACP countries, particularly for goods delivered to the UK via initial ports of landing in the EU (so called “triangular supply chains”), and the 27 EU member states.
In order to inform and support (its) members of the Diaspora, the Caribbean Chamber of Commerce in Europe (CCCE), in conjunction with its partners, has updated its general information documents. These documents address amongst other things, the main challenges and implications (see sample document for horticultural export through link) and analyses the different supply chains impacted, such as: • Direct exports to the UK • Direct exports to the EU27 • Indirect exports to the UK via the EU27 • Indirect exports to the EU27 via the UK • Indirect exports to the Rep. of Ireland via the EU27 and the UK. Secondly, while trading with or through the EU has become more complicated, it has also created some positive opportunities that that businesses in the UK could exploit as a result of Brexit, for example: • Tailoring your products and services in line with your customers’ Brexit “pain points.” These pain points could be around access to cash flow, investments, labour, logistics (e.g. stockpiling goods), taxes, etc. • Tweaking your marketing messages to emphasize how your business is ready to help clients overcome Brexit hurdles.
Consider whether there’s a market opportunity for your company to offer tailored Brexit products or services to your customers by asking yourself: ‘What are our customers struggling with in relation to Brexit, and how can we help them to solve those problems?’
Where and whenever possible, collaborate with others outside your own organization to discuss Brexit implications, stay in the loop on your industry’s responses, and strengthen your business network. n

Representation matters
At Jambo Cards we believe representation matters; in cards, in business and in life. We started with the audacious idea that bringing black card makers together and making black cards available on one platform could transform the card buying experience.
It was important to me to support as many card makers as possible. United, I felt we would be able to make a change and scale. Jambo is an online boutique card and gift store where I’ve personally scoured the UK, looking for luxurious, humorous and thoughtful cards. This has led to Jambo showcasing some of the best designs on offer from the black diaspora. I’m delighted to say we also offer a personalisation service, so cards may be sent direct to loved ones. We’ve found this to be an encouraging hit.
I’m on a mission to get black cards into the community, it is with this tenacious spirit I can proudly say Jambo Cards are stocked in: 1. In central London, at 56b Carnaby Street. 2. Wembley Central, 4 London Road, HA9 7EX. This is only just the beginning and will look to expand even further.
