Good morning sunshine - A sunrise over Alread was a beautiful morning scene last week.
The 51st annual Shirley Homecoming has joined the pages of history. In years past, homecoming was a rollicking street party with cowboys and maybe a little alcohol-tinged fun. It’s calmer these days and old-timers gather to share memories while younger folks stroll around the grounds checking out the vendors. Children played games and raced turtles until time for the parade to wind down the hill. The little ones clutched their plastic
shopping bags waiting for candy to come raining down so they could dart out into the street and scoop up the sweets. Some got extra help, using fly swatters to pull the candy toward them. The parade was full of horses and riders, Trail Life boys, fire trucks and political signs. The rain held off until the parade was over. Other homecoming events included lunch at the senior center, rodeos and live music.

Driver flees deputy
A man has been charged with fleeing after a high speed chase May 18. A Van Buren County deputy said he spotted a vehicle driving very fast down the middle of the road in the Scotland area. The deputy said he had on his siren and lights and chased the car on the Scotland-Formosa Road, but the vehicle would not stop. The driver skidded out of control and went into a ditch on Merryman Lane, according to an affidavit, then jumped out of the car and ran. The deputy said he recognized Daniel Barnett. A K9 unit was called in but the suspect was not apprehended. Barnett has been charged with fleeing, a Class D felony, reckless driving and driving left of center.

Van Buren County deputies recently arrested a man on a drug paraphernalia charge. After a deputy observed a motorcycle speeding, according to a news re-
Scarberry Watt lease from the sheriff’s office, Kaleb E. Scarberry, 41, was stopped. During an inventory after the stop, items were discovered and Scarberry was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the news release.
Sleeping woman arrested
A 35-year-old Harrison woman has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after a deputy found a syringe in her bag, according to an affidavit. Tasha M. Watt and an unidentified male were found sleeping in a car in the parking lot of Dollar General in Bee Branch on May 18, the report states. A records search showed that there was a warrant for Watt’s arrest out of Green Forest.

The descendants of the late James J. and Francis Ward will be having their annual family reunion in Conway at the Pavilion on the grounds of the Human Development Center this weekend. It will start at 10 a.m. June 10. All friends and relatives are invited to attend the potluck lunch. If you haven’t been for a while, come and get reacquainted! Anne Mann says we have a new veterinarian in town. Her name is Crystal Garner. She is working with Dr. Mays. Welcome to town, Crystal, hope you enjoy working in our county. Deniece Sikes went to the doctor for a check-up on her wrist. She got a good report. I talked to Ronnie Webb. He says Ruth is slowly recuperating. Get well wishes to you, Ruth. JR had surgery on the 15th, then last week he had a bad UTI, so he spent several days in the hospital. He is at home now and on the mend. I talked to Bonnie Drewry yesterday. She is doing better and is able to walk without her cane now. I know she is proud of that. I know they can hinder as well as help sometimes. DeLane Story and her son, David, visited her sister, JoAnn Hancock last week. She is in the hospital at Little Rock. Get well soon, JoAnn. Belated anniversary wishes to Marva and RG Ward. Their day was on the 23rd. Rylan Ward came and spent a few days with them and they went fishing with him on their anniversary. That sounds like a good way to spend any day! Marva and RG attended a birthday party for their great grandson, Levi Ward. They had a pool party, but Marva-and RG both stayed out of the pool! Levi’s birthday was June 1 and he was 2. Marva and Sue Stamper went to a yard sale at Damas-
cus; their cousins, Betty Presley and Linda Jo White, were having it. Another cousin, Kay Bowie of Conway, came up too, so it was almost a family reunion! That’s all I could dig up for this week. Hope everyone has a good week. Stay cool and take care, God bless.

James & Joyce Burns Scotland
Busy week. We just cooked breakfast for our First Saturday Breakfast. The proceeds from our breakfast go toward keeping the buildings up and paying the utilities. We have had the same group of people volunteer each month (since we started this about 10 years ago) to help cook the breakfast. Sometimes we have someone that cannot make it on the first Monday. This week Jeannie Hankins was not able to come and help. James got a phone call from Jeanie and Roger Hooper. They said they heard we were going to be short of help this Saturday and they were coming to help. They were great help. Everything went very smoothly and they knew what needed to be done. We appreciate the help. We heard that Jim Bailey had to go back to the VA Hospital, He has pneumonia and is not doing very well at this time. Please remember him and his family in your prayers. The Scotland Alumni banquet was June 2 at the Scotland School. They are expecting a great turnout. For those of you that are not going to make it, think about attending next year. This is a great tradition and if the younger people will take part it can continue for a long time. I understand some schools are going to start holding their alumni banquets only every five years. That would be the end of an era. Joyce Burns will be having Children's Art Classes this summer. Call the Art Stu-
dio and find out the particulars if you’re interested, 592-3400. Haying is in progress. Watch for equipment on the roads and stay safe. If you have Scotland News call 5923935 and James Burns will see that it gets into the newspaper. Have a great week.

Dealing with child’s anger

I’m so mad, I could spit nails! We used to say stuff like that back when dinosaurs were still roaming the earth. Now kids, and adults, are just a little more prone to swearing. I never even tried to swear when I was a kid. If I had, I would be writing this column from the grave. I am more than just a little perplexed by the number of kids these days that are depressed. How is that possible, I ask? I worked in the fields and took care of the stock when I was a kid. I got a yoyo once to play with, most of the time I just made my toys (boats, kites, guns, forts, etc). Nowadays, kids have
everything, and other than going to school, they don’t have to do a bloomin’ thing. So why are they depressed? About onein-12 kids over the age of 12 has severe depression and about half of all kids have anxiety, according to a study. What causes this? I found one interesting study published in the Journal of Adolescence just this past August. They conducted a large-scale study over five years and found that the way parents respond to a child’s anger will determine whether they develop depression. If a parent responded harshly to an outburst of anger, the child
Letter to the Editor Senior Center Menus Dear Editor: I was overjoyed to receive a copy of The Voice dated April 24, 2018. It included an article that showed my sister and niece, Belva Dauber Chang and Cindi Chang-Guerrero, along with area friends Gene and Freeda Nichols and Danna Hensley. The pictures, taken at our 1940s Shirley home and the Shirley Jail, brought back very pleasant memories - swimming in Little Red River,
worshipping in Shirley churches, delivering newspapers, exploring the caves at Indian Rock House, and playing baseball with people with names such as Nichols, Ward, Brown, and Privett. I apologize for not showing up at this year's Shirley Homecoming as promised in the article. No excuses! Hope everyone was greatly refreshed. Blessings to all, Lyle L. Dauber Forest Hill, Maryland
Reunion The Gardner family reunion will be at the Choctaw Park Pavilion on Sunday, June 10, starting at 10 a.m.Dinner will be at noon. Come, bring a dish and a lawn chair, and enjoy family and friends. Everyone is welcome.

would grow to be depressed. If the parent was mildly responsive, distracted the child, or just ignored it all together, then the child would not become depressed. In other words, when you overreact, they will overreact. The child does not learn to organize their emotions and deal with them appropriately. As the study worded it, they learn “emotional bias.” In other words, that’s the way they learn to deal with everything…blow up. I know this sounds crazy, but when you blow up when they blow up, it’s just like giving them a cookie and saying, “Good job, keep it up.” Some children want attention, even when it’s bad attention. Don’t give it to them and the behavior will eventually go away. I must warn you though, the behavior will get worse for awhile before it gets better. Ron Henson BSRN/ Psychiatric Nurse Specialist

For the record / May Marriages:
Officials from three counties take aim at increasing tourism.
3 counties join to increase tourism The county judges of Cleburne, Van Buren, and Stone counties met in Heber Springs on Friday, May 25, to share ideas to increase tourism. The county judges signed a joint proclamation on tourism growth. They hope to achieve a half-billion in revenue by the year 2025. Judge Roger Hooper of Van Buren County has been working closely with the other county judges and local tourism associations to share ideas and develop ways to cross market and promote the Ozark region that benefits the counties, the cit-
ies, and the state as a whole. Hooper stated, “When we work together we achieve much more than we could ever achieve working alone. Combining resources and talent along with an open mind and a willingness to learn creates opportunities that we could never have imagined as a standalone county, city or person. Tourism is the second largest industry in our state and is the number one employer in the service industry. We are calling upon everyone to support tourism growth and work together to achieve the half billion in revenue goal
by the year 2025.” Cleburne County Judge Jerry Holmes stated, “We’ve been meeting for several years now discussing how to bring people and ideas together to promote tourism to our respective regions. We know every $1 invested in tourism promotion provides a return of $144 in visitor spending to Arkansas. The Cleburne county region generated over $178 million in visitor spending in 2017, and the three counties together generated over $342 million in spending in 2017.” Stone County’s representative said his region has
been “experiencing steady growth in tourism over the past 10 years. These dollars have helped support the businesses in our county, and provide much needed revenue and jobs to the region. We can do better, and that is what we are working at. It’s a fine balance. You want growth, and you also want the infrastructure to support that growth.” Also at the meeting were Chamber of Commerce representatives and the state tourism associations, Ozark Gateway Tourist Council, and the Greers Ferry Lake/ Little Red River Tourism Association.

Back by popular demand - Gospel Fest is Saturday Charles Crain from Presley's in Branson will sing at the 6th Annual Clinton Gospel Fest on Saturday, June 9, at the Clinton High School Cafeteria. Last year he performed one of my alltime favorite songs, "You'll Never Walk Alone." It will give you chills! He is very personable and sings up close to the crowd instead of from the stage. Everyone is encouraged to come out for this free benefit concert and support local talent as well as the adult literacy program in this area. Relax and enjoy some uplifting gospel music all day long, because it doesn't wrap up until around 5 p.m. You are free to come and go as you please. Bid on some fun raffles and maybe win a door prize. Delicious food will be available. All proceeds from concessions and raffles go to the Literacy Council's Adult Learning Center. Proceeds will be matched by the Modern Woodmen of America again this year. King's Highway will get the ball rolling at 11a .m. This group is led by Louis Dawson (bass guitar) and Mark Gammill (lead guitar). Mark and his wife Vicky did a phenomenal job last year running sound for the entire event all day. Other members of King's Highway include Becky Wood (guitar, drums and vocals), Darin Farmer (rhythm guitar), Lyla Campora (singer/songwriter) and Natalie Farmer, Darin's daughter (who sometimes sings with them and does "sign"). Originally formed out of Friendship Baptist Church, King's Highway considers themselves "family," as they enjoy playing very good southern gospel and contemporary
music. Charles Crain will then take the stage around noon. He began in the Navy, performing with the Navy's Blue Jacket Choir. Afterward, he joined a full-time gospel group, the Mid-South Boy's Quartet in Sheridan, Arkansas. Later he joined the Blackwoods, taking him all around the world, singing to millions of gospel music fans, as well as singing on many television programs such as the “700 Club,” “PTL,” and “Jimmy Swaggart,” just to name a few. When the Blackwoods came to Branson in 1990, Crain left to form his own group, the Heartland Quartet. That year they were nominated Horizon Group of the Year. Two years later, Crain left the group to stay home and work behind the scenes in several Branson theaters. He then got a call from a friend to sing backup for Wayne Newton, which he did for several years and again traveled the country. In December 1996, Crain talked to Gary and Steve Presley and was asked if he would like to help form a Southern Gospel Quartet for their show. Crain knew in his heart that his love for gospel music was truly his calling, and that he had to leave Wayne Newton in order to do that. He settled in Branson, and since 1997, thousands of fans later, and hardly any miles, Crain has found his calling. The third group to sing Saturday (at 1 p.m. after Charles Crain) will be Hallelujah Harmony, an outstanding quartet from Cabot, Arkansas. They will inspire listeners with great Southern Gospel four-part harmonies. Group members include Bob Presswood, Tom Hollman, Garret Southerland and Jackie Moore. As one
member says: "There is nothing better than sharing the word through song and seeing the smiles on the faces of the people." I am part of the fourth group, Spirit Breez (at 2 p.m.). We have been ministering a mix of contemporary and down-home Southern Gospel music together for quite some time. Their group this year includes Danny Wheeler (bass & vocals), Diane Huntley (vocals, rhythm guitar, and tamborine), Duane Moffitt (vocals & rhythm guitar), me (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Don Nash (vocals and electric guitar). The fifth group (at 3 p.m.) is the Sulphur Road Pickers from the South Side Baptist Church in Damascus. They never tire of playing and singing old time Blue-grass Gospel music. The band performs regularly for nursing homes, community church events, and Renewal Ranch, which is a drug rehab facility in Conway. Featured in the band are vocal harmonies with guitar, mandolin, dobro, upright bass, banjo and fiddle. Members of the band are just a group of friends who share a love of music and ministry. The last (but not least) group of the day will begin at 4 p.m. They are Maygarden (who played for the fest a couple of years ago). Maygarden is composed of two talented couples from Scotland. The group's name comes from a blending of the last names of members Marti and Nathan Maynard, and Meghan and Daniel Gardner. Marti and Meghan are sisters. Marti is lead singer and Nathan plays guitar. Meghan sings backup vocals and Daniel plays guitar, banjo, sings backup vocals, and occasion-

Hidden in the closet This week I took advantage of the extra time I have been given to deep clean our closet space. Our boys are spending some time with their grandparents so I have lots of free time on my hands to get things done. So I took on the challenge of cleaning out our walk in closet. Lord knows that it needed it greatly. For those who have suffered great loss of a loved one in their life, grief can hit you out of no where. That is what happened to me this week. I finally made my way to the very back corner of our closet when I came across them. Small decorated boxes that were hidden in the closet long ago. No matter how long it has been, my heart still carries the deep scar from nine years ago when my husband and I suffered our
greatest loss. Such a loss should not be a taboo subject - that is why I am sharing. Nine years ago we were blessed to find out that we were expecting our first baby a couple months after we got married. I was about 7 weeks pregnant when I experience a miscarriage. The most heart-breaking thing we have ever been through. It took a long time for me to grieve over our loss of our sweet baby. What was hidden in those small boxes were items that were given and made in our sweet baby’s memory. I spent some time this week going through the boxes and remembering. Remembering that horrible night in the ER, remembering my husband being beside me the whole time watching as his heart broke as mine did. I admired all the
little handmade things, and the precious loving words that were written in the cards we received. Words seriously cannot express how much it means to us even almost nine years later. To parents who have experienced a loss of a baby; whether its by miscarriage, stillborn, infant death, or even the death of an adult child. My heart goes out to you. You will never get over that loss, but there is hope. I have found hope in Jesus and that one day I will see our precious baby again. No matter the age, they are still our babies. We still love them, and we still want to talk about them. So don’t keep your baby’s memory hidden away like things in a closet. I am here for you if need someone to talk to, my precious friend.
