Dr. Nate Smith, with Gov. Asa Hutchinson at right, gives an update on the coronavirus pandemic in Arkansas Friday.
On Wednesday, April 2, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Arkansas Baptist Disaster Relief in cooperation with the North Central Baptist Association will be giving out food boxes from the parking lot of Pee Dee Baptist Church. Size of family could determine if two boxes are available. First come first serve. Do not arrive before 10:30 a.m.

COVID-19 claims Fairfield Bay resident Van Buren County has seen its first death attributed to COVID-19. The death, in Fairfield Bay, was reported Sunday by County Judge Dale James and Fairfield Bay Mayor Paul Wellenberger. Wellenberger said he was not at liberty to provide any personal or confidential details at this time. Statewide, the number of COVID-19 deaths in Arkansas rose to six with positive cases up to 426 Sunday afternoon. The Arkansas Health Department
said the total case count includes 15 children and that 67 of the people infected are healthcare workers. Dr. Nate Smith, Health secretary, said 16 patients in Arkansas are currently on ventilators with 43 total patients hospitalized. He also said no new counties were reporting cases and 43 positive cases were in nursing homes. Gov. Asa Hutchinson said during Sunday's press conference that "we are not accelerating as fast as other parts of the country. We are on
Helping hands Grant McMurry has created the VBC CO-VID Grocery Relief Group to help out elderly residents. As the time of social distancing progresses, vulnerable elderly populations are running out of groceries. Grocery trips put the elderly and people with respiratory conditions at a higher risk than the rest of us, McMurry states. The relief group acts as an information gathering and sharing tool among Van Buren County residents during the
COVID-19 epidemic. Taking necessary precautions, less atrisk volunteers make grocery runs for the elderly. This minimizes risk and promotes community togetherness —what Van Buren County is all about, he says. McMurry said he is asking for helping hands of all kinds. Even those unable to make grocery trips can contact volunteers. Anyone in need of assistance can call McMurry at 501-2534646.
Anglers must buy license When Justice of the Peace Brian Tatum said earlier this month that anglers can fish without buying a license, that was only temporary. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission voted March
19 to waive fishing license fees through March 29, allowing anglers to fish anywhere in Arkansas without having to buy a license. But the free fishing period ended March 29 at 11:59 p.m.
the right strategy.” Smith said customers at grocery stores need to do a better job of social distancing, especially while waiting in line. He also advised sending someone younger such as an 18-year-old to get groceries for the elderly, to shop during off-hours and to try to shop later if the parking lot is full. Smith, noting that New Orleans and surrounding parishes are hotspots, said anyone traveling from there to Arkansas should self-quarantine for 14 days.
County Judge James reminds everyone it is time to put precautionary methods into place: Constantly wash hand, maintain social distance, and sanitize. Listen attentively to the recommendations made by the Department of Health and the governor to prevent spread. “It is our personal duty to abide by those recommendations,” James said. Keep in mind, James said, that tests are not plentiful and that screening must take place before a test is administered.
Limits on gatherings Here is the directive on gatherings issued by the secretary of Health, in consultation with the governor: The secretary of Health has sole authority over all instances of quarantine, isolation, and restrictions on commerce and travel throughout Arkansas, as necessary and appropriate to control disease in the state of Arkansas as authorized by Ark. Code Ann. §20-7109—110. Based on available scientific evidence, it is necessary and appropriate to take further action to ensure that COVID-19 remains controlled and that residents and visitors in Arkansas remain safe. All public and private gatherings of any number of people occurring outside a single household or living unit are subject to the following directives and exceptions: -Due to the high risk of community
spread of COVID-19, gatherings of more than ten (10) people in any confined indoor or outdoor space are prohibited until further notice. Gatherings subject to this directive include, without limitation, community, civic, public, leisure, commercial, or sporting events, concerts, conferences, conventions, fundraisers, parades, fairs, and festivals. -This directive does not apply to gatherings of ten (10) or more people in unenclosed, outdoor spaces such as parks, trails, athletic fields and courts, parking lots, golf courses, and driving ranges where social distancing of at least six (6) feet can be easily achieved. -This directive does not apply to businesses, manufacturers, construction companies, places of See Gatherings on page 2

Is there a vaccine yet?
No. The first testing in humans of an experimental vaccine began in mid-March. Such rapid development of a potential vaccine is unprecedented, but even if it is proved safe and effective, it probably will not be available for 12 to18 months.
my family gets sick?
If the family member doesn’t need hospitalization and can be cared for at home, you should help him or her with basic needs and monitor the symptoms, while also keeping as much distance as possible, according to guidelines issued by the C.D.C. If there’s space, the sick family member should stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom. If masks are available, both the sick person and the caregiver should wear them when the caregiver enters the room. Make sure not to share any dishes or other household items and to regularly clean surfaces like counters, doorknobs, toilets and tables. Don’t forget to wash your hands frequently.
researchers are also finding that there are more cases of asymptomatic transmission than were known early on in the pandemic. And a few experts say that masks could offer some protection in crowded places where it is not possible to stay 6 feet away from other people. Masks don’t replace hand-washing and social distancing.
Should I stock up on groceries?
Plan two weeks of meals if possible. But people should not hoard food or supplies. Despite the empty shelves, the supply chain remains strong. And remember to wipe the handle of the grocery cart with a disinfecting wipe and wash your hands as soon as you get home.

pets and other animals while you are sick with COVID-19, just like you would around other people. Although there have not been reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the new coronavirus. When possible, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick. If you are sick with COVID-19, avoid contact with your pet, including petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with pets.
Currently there is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with transmission of COVID-19. Coronaviruses need a living host (animal or human) to grow in and cannot grow in food. Like other viruses, it is possible that the virus that causes COVID-19 can survive on surfaces or objects.

I talked to Marva Ward. She said they haven’t been doing much of anything, just staying home. She heard from Frankie and Erica in Greenwood. Erica’s mom, dad, grandmother and nephew had been visiting the past week. Marva’s aunt, Margaret Voncille Martin of Plumerville passed away on Tuesday. She was 89 years old. She was a sister to Marva’s mother. I talked to Delane and Sammy Story, Ruth Webb, Margie Pounds and a few other people in the community. They didn’t have any news, but it was good to visit and find out they are doing good. I’ve been working in the yard this week. I got a bunch of brush picked up and hauled to the brush pile. I tried to burn it and failed twice, but the third time worked. I got my yard mowed for the most part, I left some for next week, one side grows faster than the other. I also learned to put a gas line on a mower. Mine had a big leak, so I found one on an old mower and put it on. It’s Patsy Ward working good, not leaking. Originally founded in 2000 as CASA of the 20th Judicial District, the Children’s Advocacy Alliance oversees both the Central Arkansas Children’s Advocacy Center and the CASA 20th Judicial District program. The two programs work side by side to provide coordinated guidance, treatment and support for child victims of abuse and neglect, from the initial investigation of abuse to their placement in a safe, perma-

The Central Arkansas Children’s Advocacy Center coordinates investigative and treatment efforts involving law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, medical examinations, and mental health services. As I was cleaning my yellow cabinets, I started thinking about how much history this house has in it. The yellow cabinets once belonged to Pierre Chambers and his wife. This house once belonged to G.C. Bolden and Gerry Bradford Bolden, when it was at Eglantine. Later it was bought by Leman and Beth Bradford, and moved out on Highway 16 southeast of Shirley after they built their new house. It was a rent house, Donald and Sharon Cooley were their last renters before they sold it to us. We moved it out here on Highway 110 so we are living in a “Have House Will Travel,” and it isn't a mobile home. Part of it was built in the 1940s and the newer part in the ’80s.

James and Plumer Leonard with their first born, Howard, taken in 1918.
Early homesteaders James Alfred Leonard, born Sept. 23, 1892, was the son of Charles Franklin Leonard, an original Van Buren County land grantee. His mother was Addie Sims, born and raised in Van Buren County. Plumer Louisa Sneed (also descended from original land grantees), born Nov. 27, 1900, was the daughter of James H. Sneed and Victoria Louanna Linn. Plumer was so young when she married Jim on Sept. 6, 1916, that her father had to sign his permission on the marriage certificate. Howard came along on May 19, 1917. Unfortunately, Howard died a few months after his first birthday. Plumer and Jim made their home in the what is now the Black Hill Road area. They farmed and
had six more children. Jim, age 52, died on Oct. 14, 1944 after being paralyzed several months from a farming accident. Plumer lived to be 80 years old, dying on Jan. 13, 1980. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren with the Leonard surname still live in Van Buren County.

An excerpt from the journal of Rev. John Henry Watts (1855-1930) "Rev. S. F. Dykes was our P. E. our second year at Wiley's Cove. Lela Maud Watts was born Nov. 22 1892. Another warm reception. Nearly all of the folks here are a kin to each other. And have so married through each other that some of them could not actually tell what a kin they were. Lots of cross eyed, ugly and ediatic folks among them. Every once in a while one would have a fit during a service. Some of the old timey folks would still hold on to their demijohns. I remember going to visit Unkle Billy Lane, an Unkle of Rev. Will Lane of the Northwest Tex. Conf. I went horse back and wore my old work cloths. He was an old timey hunter, and did not like a kid glove preacher at all so when I rode up to the gate, and he come out, and invited me down I told him I had come for a hunt and to fish. O that pleased Unkle Bill. He had once been religious but was bad backslidden. I wanted to win him to the Lord. So we
went and fished that afternoon. Robbed a bee gum that night. Lots of fish & honey now. He told Hunting scrapes until after midnight. But we slept some. Early next morning we took guns and dogs and went deer driving. Soon the dogs started one and it came where he was on a stand, where it would cross the river. And he killed it. So we went to the house with a fine Doe for our dinner. So that afternoon I went home with a big bucket of fine honey and a piece of the deer. And the best of all with the old man's heart won over. He would alway come and hear me preach after that. He soon got rite with the Lord and I left him a good Christian man. And his family also got alrite. Bro. Brumby a local preacher also lived near him. He was a good easy man. Well we had another good year in Wileys Cove. Old sister Eli-
va Hatchett lived near the Parsonage a very tough old woman and gave the preachers and the church lots of trouble. I was a little afraid of her. But we got along fine. Our camp meeting this year was fine I think we had about 60 conversions as well as I remember. We had good report for conference. We had two very pleas-
ant years at Wiley Cove. And very profitable." Written by Rev. John Henry Watts, Methodist Circuit Rider, 1892. According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, Wiley’s Cove was renamed Leslie in 1887. The Christian Church in Leslie was active in the 1910s and 1920s. It closed about 1927. A 1919 description of Leslie lists four churches in Leslie Baptist, Christian, and two Methodist. (Ozark Memories: Searcy County, Arkansas )

What is really important? by Jeff Burgess moment, I never real- was gone in 60 min-
I was visiting Lalla’s friend Cathy Bayne, on Route 254, when my cell phone rang. “Hello, how may I help you?” I asked. I recognized the voice of one of Lalla’s closest neighbors. “Lalla’s house is on fire!” she said tensely. My stomach knotted up and my body slumped as I realized the briefcase, with all my most important records, which I normally took with me everywhere, had been left behind. I had intended to be away only briefly. The first fire engine was pulling in as I arrived. Flames were leaping 30 feet above the second story roof, on the side of the house where the fireplace and chimney were located. Fire was racing across the roof of the attached garage and I knew immediately there was going to be no saving the house. I have known people who have had house fires and have sympathized with their plight. But until that
ized the extent of the emotional impact of such an event. I was devastated, figuratively brought to my knees. It was about much more than the stuff I had accumulated over three years while taking care of Lalla on hospice, and then her eldest son David, who has Asperger’s Syndrome. It was more about the over three years of notes I had made with Lalla for her third book; the first chapter we had worked on together; hundred’s of family photographs dating back to the 1800s; letters to and from family and friends going back to the 1940s; the much loved original watercolor of her in her garden, given as a gift by Cathy Bayne; husband Richard’s Purple Heart and Bronze Star, earned as a medic on the front lines during Germany’s final push to stop the advancing ally army during WWII; and so much more. It was all gone. The house Lalla and Richard had lovingly built together in the 1970s
utes. All gone! Sifting through the ashes days later, it was impressed upon me how insubstantial the things of the world are. Nothing lasts here. The whole situation has forced me to reevaluate my priorities and examine my attachment to “things.” I’ve asked myself frequently, “What is really important?” Her third book was to be a collaborative effort, based upon all my notes and the other personal information I had gathered. Now it will have to be a work of fiction, based upon a true story, since I’ll be working off of my memory mostly. But she would want me to move forward on it because that was something that was really important to her. Beyond her strong desire to help people in whatever way she could was an indomitably positive attitude. This was the woman who was told by the medical community, in the 1970s, she was terminal. But decid-
Lalla’s favorite watercolor was a gift from friend and neighbor Cathy Bayne. ed to find another option for her life’s script and, as a result, lived to see nearly 94 years. This was the woman who decided she had to share, with anyone who was interested, what she had learned in defeating her own illness. This was the woman, who even in her last two weeks, when obviously failing quickly, could muster a weak but enthusiastic, “I’m feeling great.” Her lessons on be-
ing positive, even in the face of circumstances to the contrary, have affected me deeply. In no way depreciating the importance or severity of events taking place on the planet, right here and right now, I can be positive and kind. I can let my light shine. The more of us that can do this, the better off we will all be. Let us choose to be part of answer, in whatever ways Providence guides us. Let us help
and support those in need. We’re going to have to pull together, like few of us have ever been called upon before. We can do this. (footnote: David Ostergren, who attempted to put out the fire, recently moved from the burn unit at the hospital to a rehabilitation facility, and is doing well. He is now being looked after by his younger brother Steven and Steven’s wife Camille.)

Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501-362-5150) for Greers Ferry Dam water release information.
(updated 3-252020) Some anglers who were fishing around Toad Suck on March 15 forwarded the Fishing Report a photo of a nice blue catfish they caught that Sunday. The blue was hauled in by Rob Mauldin (photo), Scott Lewis and Allen Haney on a noodle with frozen shad. Maulden reports that the river that day was rising quickly and "our fish finder showed fish schooled on the down- Greers Ferry Lake As of Wednesday, stream side of a rock jetty that had some wa- the Army Corps of Engiter flow over the top of neers reports the lake’s elevation at 463.03 feet the jetty." msl (normal conservaLittle Red River tion pool: 462.54 feet (updated 3-25- msl). 2020) Lowell Myers of (updated 3-25Sore Lip’em All Guide 2020) Tommy Cauley of Service (501-230-0730) Fishfinder Guide Sersaid Greers Ferry Lake vice (501-940-1318) is still above seasonal said the water level at pool. Come get ya some fresh fish.” Crappie are eating from supper shallow out to 30 feet and all in-between on jigs and minnows and small crankbaits, he says. Walleye are on the move all over lakes and rivers, spawning, post-spawn and pre-spawn. Drag crawlers, minnows, crankbaits and jerkbaits for best results. Catfish are making moves as well, from deep to shallow and all in-between, and can be caught various ways. “Black bass are chewing hard all over, just pick your poison from super shallow out to 40 feet,” he adds. Hybrid striped bass and white bass are in lakes and rivers and all in between from super shallow out to 40 feet. Grubs, spoons, inline spinners and Road Runners are working.

(updated 3-252020) Cotter Trout Dock (870-435-6525)
said the brown trout bite has been great in this low water with its slight murky tinge. The desired gauge level at Newport changed this past week so the Army Corps of Engineers and the Southwestern Power Administration have decreased generation amounts to as low as minimum flow, although most days they still see a hefty rise in the river level by mid-afternoon. “We're seeing more action with sculpins after a couple of weeks of inattention on the part of healthy browns, but don't leave the minnows at home yet. The low water has even fooled the browns and bigger rainbows into snatching at Sunrise PowerBait combined with shrimp. “The low water has also forced the rainbows into just their favorite holes, and once you find them the catch is rapid, one after the other. Worms, both live and artificial, have been popular as well as yellow and orange PowerBait (mixed together they look a lot like the Sunrise-colored egg.) “Wading opportunities abound and bank fishing is a whole lot more productive. Zebra midges have proven successful and peach egg patterns are also doing well. Try throwing a large brown, flashy streamer and see what bites. “With all that's going on around us, the place to be is the great outdoors! Come to Cotter and the White River for fresh air and for the robust trout catch.”
Bull Shoals As
of
day, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 658.40 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 659.00 feet msl). (updated 3-252020) Del Colvin at Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock said the clarity is dingy to clear. The lake is 12 feet high and rising. Surface temperature is 51 degrees. Del suggests that in these conditions, target the channel swing transitions toward spawning pockets. He heard no reports on bream. Crappie are fair. They are at a depth of 15-20 feet on gravel points close to or on the bottom. Success can be had using a Ned rig, shaky head rig or Carolina rig. Look in those rocky point areas and by steep banks. Black bass are fair. If you’re around shad and it’s windy, a crankbait is good. Otherwise, go with jerkbaits and jigs on points 10-25 feet down, and also use swimbaits. Focus on the shallow flats. No reports on catfish. White bass reports are good. White bass are moving up. Walleye are being caught close to dusk using jerkbaits.
Norfork Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 555.98 feet msl (normal conservation pool: Sept.-April, 552.00 feet msl; April-Sept., 555.75 feet msl). (updated 3-252020) Tom Reynolds of STR Outfitters said, “I did not do much fishing this past week due to the weatherman saying we would have Lake rain all day when I had Wednes- trips scheduled, so we

canceled and, guess what? No rain. We did get a lot of rain, but most of it was at night. The lake is 12 feet over pool and it looks like it will keep going up. We did try and fish Friday morning but the lake rose 3 feet overnight and the debris line in Bennett's was a mile long. “They are catching stripers along the bluff walls in front of Fouts marina and on the flat heading towards 6B. The water was warm Friday, so we decided to catch some shad. We moved to the back of the left arm of Bennett's and found crappie and shad in 2 feet of water. The water was muddy and the temperature was 58 degrees. With the influx of new water the temperature will fall, but the dirty water holds the temperature better, so once this cold front passes we should expect some great action on the flats for stripers. The crappie are moving up and you should expect to catch a limit fishing the new brushline as the water rises. “Keep fishing the creeks for crappie, don't be afraid to go way back into shallow water. We were baiting on Friday and the water was 58 degrees and found crappie in 2 feet of water. Once we start getting some warm nights the crappie will move back and start feeding again. Minnows, jigs and small spoons are catching limits of crappie. The best three creeks right now are Big Creek, Bennett's Bayou and Pigeon Creek.”
