son that it is time to “begin the process of reopening.” “If the projections hold, Arkansas will begin the reopening process on May 4,” James said. “We
must not be reckless. We must still focus on what prevents spread ... sanitize the hands, don't touch the face, keep our distance, etc. We absolutely can do this and do it right.”

Our nation is rightfully thanking first responders and the medical community standing tall on the front lines of this fight. While we continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers, we must also lift up those responsible for ensuring the resiliency of our food supply chain. Americans depend on our nation’s farmers to grow the food, fuel and fiber we need. This dependence becomes much more pronounced in times of crisis, which creates additional strain on those who provide the goods and supplies necessary for everyday life. Our agriculture community, trucking industry and grocers are doing incredible work to ensure that food and critical supplies remain in stock. This moment is presenting an enormous challenge, but they are rising to the occasion. No one is immune to this virus. We are beginning to see an uptick in the number of employ-
ees at processing plants, grocery stores and other key points in the supply chain who have tested positive. Fortunately, these critical industries have contingency plans in place and are following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance to protect the health and safety of essential workers, while keeping critical functions operating throughout the outbreak. While the industry is doing its part, the federal government must take responsible steps to ensure the continuity of our country’s food supply and support rural areas during the coronavirus pandemic. That’s why I joined a bipartisan group of my colleagues to urge U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to consider enacting emergency measures that provide relief to our farmers and ranchers — such as deadline extensions, loan payment deferrals, payment forbearance and a full suspension See Boozman on page 2

A woman’s screams of “he has a gun!” lead to the arrest of an Omaha, Arkansas, man on Feb. 23. Khade Greenhaw told Clinton Police Officer Joshua Patterson that he did have a weapon under the driver’s seat of his Monte Carlo, according to an affidavit for arrest. After K-9 Terry alerted to the presence of illegal narcotics, a search of the vehicle turned up a clear plastic bag containing seven smaller plastic bags each containing a clear crystal-like substance, three syringes containing liquid, and 0.4 grams of marijuana, according to the police report.
Greenhaw Greenhaw, 26, has been charged with simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, a Class Y felony; possession of methamphetamine with purpose to deliver, a Class A felony; possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class D felony; and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. The charges were filed on April 14.
James A. Johnson, 26, of Shirley is accused of assaulting his aunt after she told him to clean his bedroom, according to an affidavit for arrest. Johnson pushed his aunt to the floor then punched her father, according to the report. When the victim tried to call 911, Johnson tore the phone off the wall and threw her cell phone across the road, the report states. Johnson has been charged with domestic battering-second degree, a Class C felony; domestic battery-third degree and interference with emergency communications, both misdemeanors.

Clinton offers unusual graduation ceremony High school graduation will become a big-screen production in the Clinton School District. The final video will be played at the Kenda Drive-In in Marshall. “They get to experience their name being called, walking across the stage, receiving the
diploma, having their tassel turned,” said Superintendent Jay Chalk. Student’s parents and a few close family members will be allowed to attend the ceremony. Then in May for the theater experience, each student will get two car tickets. “It’s not normal but they will remember
this for a lifetime,” said High School Principal Tim Smith. “It was a way that we could still get everyone together, and still do something because with seniors, graduation is the last time they’re together as a whole group.” The school district is also planning a traditional ceremony over the summer, if it’s safe.
challenges finding variety during shopping trips, the ebb and flow of a store’s stock is not an indication of a national shortage or a reason to panic. There is no need to buy more groceries than is necessary for a week or two. These are anxious times, but the supply chain is resilient,
our producers are agile and our food is safe and abundant. You will be able to get food and supplies on your next visit, without depleting the options for others in need now. We have to remember we are all in this together. While most of us are following social distancing guidelines,
those critical to ensuring the supply chain holds through this crisis are working harder than ever. We can each do our part to help ease the stress they are under, which in turn, ensures that our family, friends and neighbors can also get the products they need.

All group activities at the EHC building in Rupert are cancelled this week. Wednesday is Earth Day. A good day to be thankful for the protective cocoon that carries us through the vastness of space. The New Moon is official Wednesday at 9:26 p.m. and it’ll be very dark all night. That’s good for the the Lyrid meteor shower which peaks the same night at around 1 a.m. Look high in the east. Night, normally the last Friday of the month at the Foursquare Church, has been cancelled, as has been all other church group activities. Venus and the crescent moon descend side-by-side on Sunday in the evening’s west-northwest sky. The following night, Venus reaches its pinnacle of brilliance for 2020. Last week’s freezes did damage in several locations. I had covered up all my warm weather crops but a neighbor said they had missed the warning and lost all their early planted squashes and beans. And I have yet to see how the freeze affected my flowering blueberries. So is it all over for the season? The definitive answer starts at “maybe” and goes to “probably.” One source says our area is almost guaranteed not to have a frost after May 2. But as of this writing the wild blackberries have not bloomed, which many old-timers say is when we could get our last cold snap. Although some years that doesn’t happen. Easter was celebrated in Shirley on Saturday, April 11, with the children riding by in their cars and the mayor handing them a bag or basket with eggs and gifts. Over 100 cars went through the line. Mary Auvil of the Plant Community called and we had a good visit and shared a lot of memories. We discussed how to get people to wear masks, We decided that was a choice everyone had to make for themselves. I was wearing a mask to keep from catching the flu, then to keep from catching Covid-19. I don't know how long it will take me to get weaned out of my mask. I had a phone visit with Lois Compton this week, she is staying tough. No one is visiting so there isn't much news to write about. Maybe
Donna Sherrod has been making beer bread. She said it was pretty good. I have to agree with her. I used to make it pretty often. She said they went for a ride to Brewer Lake. They spotted a thunderstorm coming across the lake, so they headed home and almost beat it here. Earlene Brecheen came by and visited with DeLane Story on Tuesday. She brought her some cinnamon rolls. DeLane says they were very good, but gone already. Happy belated birthday to Roxie Williams. Her big day was on the 15th. Ruth Webb had a phone visit with Ronny and Brenda. They were doing OK. She said the only company she had was her aide. I guess it’s good to have someone to talk to once in a while. Marion Smith said her doctor gave her a good report. Four of her ribs are 90 percent healed and the other two should be well in another month, so I guess she is feeling much better. Happy belated anniversary to Frankie and Erica Ward. They celebrated 19 years together on the 14th. They came by to tell Marva and RG bye before going back home to Greenwood. I’ve been mowing, using the weed trimmer and push mowing. I had the yard cleaned up pretty good, then a storm came through, now I have to pick all the brush up before I can mow again. It’s a never ending job. I planted some potatoes in a couple of my tubs, now we’ll see what happens. I hope I can get a garden planted before August this

We made it another week. But when it is decided that it is safe to get out and go where ever we want to, I think I will stay home another week or two and be sure it is safe. I have decided that I need to help support our country, so I am going to purchase made in America products. Why should we send our money to another country when we need to keep it home and support our country? I understand that a lot of products now say packaged in the USA. We had to rely on other countries to send us masks and medical equipment that we need. Why can't we be self-reliant? I know that a lot of things in Walmart does not tell
where it was produced. I saw a thing on Facebook where the big lady was going through her closet and was hanging her clothes outside to air. She said if you do not take them out of the dark closet and let them air -- they shrink. I think I will have to do that. I am sure it could not be the fact that I cook and eat more just because I am staying home and eating and eating and eating. Not many people are out if they do not really have to go anywhere. Scotland Baptist Church is posting their services on Facebook so everyone can see and hear them. They also had an Easter service in the parking lot. Everyone stayed in their cars and the preacher preached from the porch and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Eventually things will get back to normal. Stay safe and if you have Scotland News call 592-3935 and we will get it into the paper.

Bull Shoals Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 682.75 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 659.00 feet msl). (updated 4-152020) Del Colvin at Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock reports that the lake clarity is cloudy and the lake is 23 feet high as of Tuesday midafternoon. He heard no reports on bream. Crappie are good and are spawning in the shallow water. Black bass also are spawning in the shallow water and the bite is fair. Catfishing is good but you’ve got to go deep. Try 3540 feet depth halfway back in the creeks. The cats are biting on shad. White bass are mainly done and have moved on. They’re biting on jerkbaits and swimbaits. Walleye are good at the main and secondary points, biting jerkbaits in the evening.

fork Lake fishing has been good over the last couple of weeks and will continue to get better and better as the weather and the lake stabilizes. Crappie and bass fishing have been the best bite with the striped bass bite not far behind. He says, “There have been two different methods that I and others have been using to catch crappie. Trolling small crankbaits, such as the Berkley Flicker Minnow size 7, that dive 10 to 15 feet have been working very well. I have been slow-trolling these baits at 1.2 mph. Colors have varied, purple has been working the best as of late, but the firetiger and shad color patterns have also been doing well. Best areas have been part way back in creeks and coves, especially if there is a lot of sunken brush in 10 to 30 feet of water. The crappie are schooling and moving between brush piles. I have mainly been staying in 18 to 30 feet of water and am working the whole area. The other method of fishing for crappie is to vertical jig a small jig over brush that is in 20 to 30 feet of water. The crappie have been suspended above the brush about 15 feet down. There is actually a third method. Crappie are still spawning and will be for some time. They will be up in shallow water, so casting a jig into shallow water or live bait on a slip float will catch you some fish. This last method is the toughest as there is a lot of sunken brush along the shore line so they could be spawning anywhere.
