Burglars strike in Clinton Clinton Police are investigating a string of burglaries and vandalism that occurred within a month. On July 3, an employee at Pilgrims Pride reported discovering the guard shacks had been broken into by kicking
in the doors. Phone chargers and refrigerated items were taken and police discovered that the main building had also been entered. The report states that there was damage throughout the building. On July 28, a man
who is working on remodeling the building at 674 Highway 65B reported tools were taken from the location. Those included a DeWalt Jigsaw, DeWalt Driver and DeWalt Driver 3-speed power drill. The next day, Ju-
ly 29, Miller Sanitation reported a break-in at its business on Highway 65B. Money and a checkbook were missing, according to the report. On Aug. 2, a break-in was reported at the Clinton Baseball Field concession
stand. Items reported missing included the cash register, a tool box, a box of Ring Pops candy and a scoreboard control box. The report states that a school employee had turned in a small tool set and a box of Ring
Pops that he found a few days earlier. The scoreboard controller was found in a storage locker. Anyone with information about these burglaries is asked to call Clinton Police at 745-4997.

Crash injures 1 The Burnt Ridge Volunteer Fire Department responded to the report of a vehicle accident on Burnt Ridge Road about 9:30 a.m. Aug. 7. The driver of the vehicle was able to get out of the truck and appeared to have only minor injuries. Firefighters conducted traffic control until relieved by Van
Buren County sheriff's deputies. Shortly after clearing the scene, firefighters were called back to the scene after witnesses reported the vehicle smoking. Firefighters quickly began fire suppression efforts stopping any fire spread. No further information was available.
Rainy week - After a dry spell, rains returned to the county last week, with one reported rain event measuring nearly 3 inches. Pictured is a squall line approaching Clinton from the northwest. The foggy blue below the dark cloud is an approaching “wall” of heavy rain. (Photo by Jeff Burgess)
Her next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 6, 2019.
2 arrested
Two people were arrested Aug. 5 after their car was stopped on Boar Road after a deputy said a brake light was out. Deputy Tim Adams stated in a affidavit that the driver and passenger both appeared nervous. After consent to search was denied, the deputy stated that he could smell marijuana and a drug-sniffing dog was brought to the scene,
according to the affidavit. A search of the car turned up a pill bottle containing about 2 grams of a white powdery substance and a glass smoking device with residue, the affidavit states. After transporting the passenger to jail, Adams found 13 grams of a green leafy substance in a bag in his patrol vehicle, the report states. The report also states that the passenger resisted “slightly” when taken into custody. The passenger
in the car, Elbert Ray Banning, 29, of Bee Branch, has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class D felony; possession of a controlled substance and tampering with physical evidence, both misdemeanors. The driver of the car, Shalene Cutright, 53, of Clinton has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a Class D felony. Plea and arraignment is set for Aug. 26.

The Voice of Van Buren County change is Saul of Tarsus. Ever heard of him? Probably by another name. Saul had a violent, cruel and hateful heart; and all of it was focused on the church of Jesus Christ. But then Jesus saved him, and his name along with his character was changed; we know him as Paul, the apostle. You know, the one who wrote so much of the New Testament and defined love as, “Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you must also do.” (Colossians 3:13) And he wrote the greatest love manifesto of all time: “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, things no evil, bears all things, endures all things and never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) Paul’s heart was completely changed. That’s what is needed today. That is the cure for the present problem of violence, whether it be in the home, in the school, or at the mall. And don’t think because you have not done any mass shootings lately that you don’t need a new heart. Everybody needs a heart transplant by Doctor Jesus. Without this we will not know the love of God. Society must be changed one heart at a time. And it begins with each of us.

A pig story from Grandma’s diary
When my grandson, Logan, was 7 years old, he told me he wanted a pig but that his dad wouldn’t let him get one. He wanted a pig he could show at the fair. Later, Logan said his dad was going to get him a pig when he was 13 years old. His older brother, Caleb, whispered to me that their dad knows Logan won’t want a pig when he’s 13. Papa and I told Logan that we would get a pig for him. We told him not to tell his dad, that it’s a secret. For Logan’s eighth birthday, I made a cake. It was shaped like a smiley face, with yellow icing, green markings, and eight blue candles. He blew at them and all but one went out. Then he blew again and the last one went out, too. Papa and I gave him a toy soldier and a huge poster of the Arkansas Razorbacks for his birthday. He loves football and watching the Razorbacks. The grandsons went back to school after the holidays. One day, after school, Logan called and I answered the phone. “GeGe, I want to talk to Papa,” he said. And I handed the phone to his papa. “Papa, do you know Avery?” Logan asked. (Terry Simpson is pastor “Yes,” said Papa. of Grace Church) “Well, his cousin

has a pig to give away. Free. It’s a big pig. Do you want it?” “No, not a big pig. We need to get a little pig.” As of August 31, 2007, Logan does not have a pig. He and Caleb did get a pup-
py. It’s cute. It’s a puggle. A beagle and pug mixed. They named him Butch. Nothing more has been said about the pig. No fence has been installed that would hold a hog. Papa and I are in a quandary about how, when, where and if we should get a pig for Logan. We were babysitting with Logan and Caleb one Saturday evening. Logan was being a little bit naughty and had to be disciplined. I talked to him to try to get him to straighten up and behave. I said, “Let’s talk about getting that pig.” “Daddy’s going to get me a pig,” Logan said. I thought, Yes, when you’re 13. So now he doesn’t need help from GeGe and Papa to get a pig. Never mind. He’s going to get his very own pig. But time went on and he didn’t get a pig. Time just kept moving on and Logan began to grow up. He passed age 13, 14, 15, 16 and by 17, he had his driver’s license, a Chevy pickup and eventually he acquired a cell phone. In high school, he studied, played basketball and golf. In hunting season, he loved hunting deer, and often had successful hunts. He’s had many experiences while hunting, but none of them include even a wild hog. UPDATE: This coming fall, Logan will begin his third year of college. His papa and I are very proud that he is our grandson. For whatever reason, we couldn’t work out the plan for him to own a pig. But he’s a No. 1 fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks. Go Razorbacks! Woo pig, sooie!

went to Conway on Tuesday. We went shopping and bowled for a while and then had lunch and then did some more shopping. We made a day of it, came home late and tired, but we enjoyed the whole time! I planted my late garden on Wednesday. I got up early and got it ready to plant and it got so hot I had to take off for a while, then thankfully it cooled down in the evening. I planted two kinds of beans, cucumbers, squash, beets, purple hull crowder peas and a mixture of turnips, mustard, kale, carrots, radishes, and I threw in a few romaine lettuce seeds! I’m hoping the 5 inch rain didn’t drown it. I did spot the cucumbers popping out of the ground this evening. Yea! JR and I went to town on Friday. It was like a sauna, but it was cool compare to when I was push mowing later in the day. I waited until 7 o’clock, but it was still

The Formosa EH ladies will be preparing it. I’ve heard of bullfrogs and heard them holler, but I have some goat frogs. My neighbor has a goat and it bleats all the time. Now my frogs have starting bleating instead of croaking! It’s weird, but there is water in our cellar and the frogs get in there and this week I noticed every time I go out on the carport the goat would start bleating then I noticed it was coming from the cellar and discovered it was the frogs! Strange things happen! God bless and have
Mary Beth Price of Conway visited in Shirley with Lois Compton last Monday. Jerry Hensley of Little Rock visited his aunt, Ruth Hodge, and his sister, Karen Johnson. Noah and Presley Cintron of Clinton visited their grandparents, Steven and Belinda Murray, and great-grandparents, Jimmy and Thelma Murray. Stanley and Pam Murray, Cameron and Joni Murray and daughter Claire, Corey Murray and sons Kaelyx, Legion and Skyler all attended a Cardinals baseball game in St. Louis, Missouri, on Thursday night. Thelma Murray attended the Care Cap Retreat at Mount Eagle at the end of Sally Flat Road in Stone County on Friday. It is a great place for a retreat. Well, summer finally got here. Let’s hope it will be very short and cool off soon. We had a very good turnout for our First Saturday Breakfast last week. We just about ran out of food. I think we had two biscuits and four slices of bacon and a little gravy left. We promise to cook more next month. We were almost finished with the dishes when the hot water tank sprang a leak. You should have seen how fast we worked to keep the water from running all over the cafeteria. We finally got the water shut off. Now if we can just get the hot water tank fixed before we need to use it again. Next Friday Night is the musical at the Senior Center. Do plan on being there to enjoy the music and if you play and or sing plan on joining in. Everyone has a great time. Music begins at 7 p.m. and ends at 9. You are welcome to bring snacks if you want. Everyone likes to eat. It is time to start thinking about the kids on the road and the school buses. Let watch out for them and stay safe. If you have Scotland news and want it in the paper just call 592-3935

The full moon is official Thursday at 7:29 a.m. August’s full moon is often called the Full Sturgeon Moon because the fishing was easy this time of year in the northeast. In other parts of the continent it’s been called Full Green Corn Moon, Wheat Cut Moon and Moon When All Things Ripen. In the Southern Hemisphere, where it’s winter now, they call August’s full moon Snow Moon, Storm Moon and Hunger Moon. It’s Quilting Thursday, 9 to 11 a.m., in the EHC building near Alread. Curiosity seekers are welcomed. Venus is at its greatest brightness of the year just after sunset Thursday, in the west. Folks last year raved of his performance & asked when he’d return. Here’s your chance to see him AGAIN! Elvis tribute artist, Tom Christopher from St. Louis will be in town for on night only performing some of Elvis’ great hits. He’s got the looks! He’s got the moves! And rumor has it, he’s got the voice to boot! Having performed in Las Vegas and to a packed house in Greece, Christopher was also invited by the staff of Elvis Presley Enterprises to give VIP tours of Graceland as Elvis. He was the first ETA to be given that honor!

Neighbors from page 5 ing conflicts. Tuesday, next week, is Chocolate Pecan Pie Day. Little is known about its invention but some say the French in New Orleans created it after receiving pecan nuts from Native Americans. If anyone needs a taste tester, I’m available. I’ve now harvested 2 quarts of blueberries, and, thanks to the recent rains, expect many more berries to come. I’ve also noted my pears continue to swell nicely. It’s looking like a very productive year in the county so far. If you have info about the greater Crabtree and west 16 community, call or text Jeff Burgess, 745-1249.

With the new days comes new strength and new thoughts.
Were you one of the 88 people that came to Crossword Solution the first fashion show of the Fairfield Bay Chamber of Commerce? If not, you missed out on a good time. We had a great time with 30 models wearing clothing from local stores and finger foods from local restaurants. Talk around the Bay is that they might close down the only bowling alley in our area because of its yearly financial loss. Some have talked of adding arcade games to the alley to help add revenue to it. Many are for the arcade games and I hope it will stay open and add more Sudoku Solution days, which would help in this heat. The Bay is getting ready for the Bayfest in the Park on Saturday, September 14, at the Woodland Mead Park.

Fishing Report North Arkansas

Central Arkansas
Little Red River
(updated 8-7-2019) Lowell Myers of Sore Lip’em All Guide Service said Wednesday morning the Army Corps of Engineers was releasing 24 hours of two units of generation daily. If you fish high water, you will want to use long leaders and heavy weight using egg patterns, San Juan worms, micro jigs and sowbugs. Pounding the banks with streamers is also an effective fly-fishing method. For Trout Magnet fishing, use long leaders and heavy weight using cotton candy and hot pink colored bodies on silver and chartreuse jigheads. Concentrate on pools along the banks. Key for both fly-fishing and Trout Magnet fishing during heavy generation is the ability to get and maintain a good presentation of the fly or Trout Magnet. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501-3625150) for Greers Ferry Dam water release information.
Greers Ferry Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 465.97 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 462.04 feet msl Oct. 1-April 30; 463.04 feet msl May 1-June 1; 462.54 feet msl June 1-Sept. 30). (updated 8-7-2019) Tommy Cauley of Fishfinder Guide Service (501-940-1318) said the water level at Greers Ferry Lake was at 466.02 feet msl early Wednesday morning, 3.48 feet above normal pool of 462.54 feet msl and falling. Crappie fishing is still going pretty well despite most anglers not fishing for them. Try jigs and minnows straight up and down in 18-35 feet of water. Walleye are eating crawlers 18-45 feet on flats all over the lake, just stay with the program on jigheads or drop-shots. Black bass are scattered from super shallow out to 50 feet of water and can be caught a gauntlet of ways. Bream are eating crickets and crawlers on flats if you put your bait in front of them. Catfish are eating, of course, on a variety of baits, and the bite will continue go-
ing forward. Hybrid bass and white bass are eating shad on and off all day and night at present with schooling of fish on the verge of breaking loose; try spoons, inline spinners and swim baits from 23 feet out to 60 feet.
Arkansas River at Morrilton
(updated 8-7-2019) Charley’s Hidden Harbor at Oppelo (501354-8080) says he had a few boats launch in the past week. One was running the river to see what ramps were open. The boater said he caught some nice bass in the Pine Bluff Pool on Tuesday morning. He returned to this pool around noon and fished the jetties, and reported catching a few. They also had an angler from Conway show up, and he fished all the pushups and brush piles with black and blue jigs. He caught 17 black bass and rated fishing fair. Also catfish were around deeper brush piles. Use nightcrawlers. The catfish bite looks good. No reports on bream, crappie, white bass or stripers.
(updated 8-7-2019) Cotter Trout Dock (870435-6525) says, “The water has arrived, and the guides are excited. Bull Shoals Lake is the repository for overflow from Beaver and Table Rock lakes, plus a lot of tributary runoff, and for several months has been releasing very little of the pent-up water via the dam so as not to cause additional flooding downstream. Now we're seeing some of that water being released and, in my opinion, in a very prudent manner; smaller releases early in the day, increasing amounts late in the afternoon. It's true that wading opportunities are scarce for now, but releases are much less swift and damaging tn in previous years. “The catch here in Cotter has been a higher quality, 17- to 21-inch rainbows are almost common, and the ones that are taken home (under 14 inches) are healthy and fat. To fill your creel, downsize your hooks (size 8 or 10) and try a tiny piece of shrimp with a bubblegum pink worm. Make it a mousetail – white egg pattern on the pink worm – for a more sure catch. Smithwick stickbaits are in order: silver or orange bellies, swimming depth of 4-6 feet. Fly-fishers, use weighted line if you're casting a streamer – and now is a great time for those using the tried and true olive or brown and orange with beadheads. Drift-fishing will be the norm for the next couple of months, but your guides have a few favorite anchoring sites they save for times when children are on board and

a simpler casting/retrieving method is desired. Bank fishing is not out of the question, just bring along some extra patience and be ready to cast more frequently than when the river level is low. High water should not keep you from the river, it just provides more opportunity for learning new techniques. Come visit and catch!”
Bull Shoals Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reported the lake’s elevation at 682.93 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 661.00 feet msl). (updated 8-7-2019) Del Colvin at Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock said the lake clarity is mostly cloudy, and the Bull Shoals remains high at about 25 feet over normal pool. Black bass are picking up, he said. The fish are 20-30 feet depth of water and the bite has been good. Use a topwater in the early morning. Fish the rocky points. Use jigs or dropshots on the secondary points. Catfishing has been good for the jugs and limblines at night. Redear sunfish are biting on a red crawler bait in 15-20 feet of water.
Norfork Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reported the lake’s elevation at 568.11 feet msl (normal conservation pool: Sept.-April, 552.00 feet msl; AprilSept. 555.75 feet msl). (updated 7-31-2019) Lou Gabric at Hummingbird Hideway Resort said Norfork Lake fishing is in its summertime fishing pattern. “This means that the fish have gone deep and will stay deep until the lake starts to cool. My fishing time has
Page 11
greatly been reduced this summer. I have only been able to get out once or twice a week. I will get back to my every day fishing habit shortly. I will try my best to start doing more frequent fishing reports, as well.” Lou says most species of fish are at or around the thermocline, 25-35 feet deep. “I spent (Tuesday) morning fishing at this water depth. I was casting swimbaits, letting them sink to the bottom, jigging spoons off the bottom and at the same time dragging several live shad on the bottom. I moved around slowly in 25-35 feet of water and caught many different species of fish. I was mainly fishing the shallow sloping banks. I was looking for walleye, but catfish and bass were hanging around and liking the live shad. I did land many walleye, but I could only find the nursery fish. The walleye that I caught were only 12-15 inches long. The catfish were nicesize and really fought hard. I actually broke off two, but not before seeing them several times before they dove for the bottom again. All the cats that I have caught have been well over 8 pounds. My live bait caught the most fish, but jigging the spoon caught all the walleye.” Striped bass fishing has been a little difficult, Lou says. This time of year, once the water temperature gets into the upper 80s, many of the striped bass head toward the dam area. Lou says he fished for striped bass on Monday. “I headed out before light to search. I looked at several typical areas but found very few fish.

Corky is expressing his authority tonight. He ran Sig, Star, Cassie and Shasta upstairs, so it’s just Corky and me in the living room. He is getting cranky in his old age and it amazes me how he can still control these other Mutts, especially when several are twice a big as he is. But believe me he owns them; when you are top dog, and he is, that is all it takes. Anyway it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog and Corky is one tough little man.

Star is just like a 2-year-old kid, she follows me everywhere I go and usually lays around the house and watches me, but, when she disappears and gets quiet, you better get up and find out what she is up to and it’s usually not good.
