Cloggers wow ’em in Branson

Meeting shuffle

The Van Buren County Quorum Court meeting, usually held the third Thursday of the month, this month will be held the fourth Thursday - 6 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Courthouse Annex in Clinton. Meanwhile, the Clinton City Council, usually the second Thursday of the month, will be held this week, the third Thursday, at 6:30 p.m. at the Clinton Municipal Airport off Highway 16 East. The meetings are open to the public.

The Judi King School of Dance Clogging team, usually known as the Red River Cloggers had their name changed last week to the “Silver Dollar City Championship Cloggers” as they had the honor to dance at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri in the Championship Clogging Show. Under the direction of Judi King, the Cloggers had to perfect several new dance routines for the 24 shows they performed over six days. DA Callaway, entertainment director at Silver Dollar City described the Red River Cloggers as “first class all the way.” The girls have all returned home and will resume entertaining locally under their original name the Red River Cloggers.

Clinton native receives de Fleury medal

Filing time

The deadline for filing to run for municipal offices is Aug. 17 at noon.

The chief of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lieutenant General Todd T. Semonite, recently authorized the presentation of a Congressional Medal to a Clinton, Arkansas man. The Bronze De Fleury Medal was presented to James W. Cullum of Clinton by the Little Rock District Commander, Colonel Robert G. Dixon, at the 243rd Little Rock District Corps Day ceremonies. The Bronze De Fleury Medal is one of the highest honors awarded by the Corps of Engineers. Cullum served the Army Corps of Engineers for 33 years. He volunteered for duty during the last Iraq war, and served there for more than two years. While in Iraq he was presented the Distinguished Valor Award for

his actions in tending a large number of wounded in exposed positions during a mortar attack. Cullum was staff judge advocate for the Gulf Region Division, a Two-Star Command, serving three tours of duty there. The medal is named for French Engineer Francois de Fleury who volunteered to serve with the American Army in its fight for independence during the Revolutionary War. Lt. Col. de Fleury's courage under fire in the desperate battle at Stony Point, New York in 1779 won him the Accolades of Congress. The de Fleury Medal was the very first Congressional Medal. It is inscribed in Latin with the words "A Memorial and Reward for Courage and Boldness.”

Asa Hutchinson said. “We owe our children a future, and one of the most basic contributions to their future is to ensure that they get to school and back home safely. ‘Flashing Red. Kids Ahead.’ Easy to say. Vital to remember." In the 2018-19 school year, some 350,000 students in Arkansas will board one of about 7,000 school buses. “School bus safety

From there, he took a bus to Magnolia, Texas, where he worked with a landscaping company for a week or so, getting paid by the day, and stayed at a hotel. Next, Berry decided to visit his brother in Fort Smith and bought a ticket back to Arkansas, the report states. His brother was working and Berry told investigators he never saw him, so he took a bus back to Clinton. Berry said he

stayed in Clinton for a couple of days thinking about turning himself in, but “couldn’t do it.” He hitched a ride to Quitman then to Flippin, where he was arrested on charges of criminal impersonation. Berry told a Flippin officer he had stolen a vehicle in Van Buren County three weeks earlier, the report states, and they contacted the sheriff’s office. Berry’s next stop was the Van Buren County Detention Center on a charge of theft of property, a Class C felony.

Report: Truck thief takes Texas trip A Sherwood man’s three weeks on the run began July 9 with the theft of a truck in Bee Branch, according to an arrest affidavit. Robert Stewart Berry, 18, told investigators he wrecked his own vehicle on East Mountain Road, fled the scene and spent the night with a friend. He eventually made his way to his father’s home, also in Bee Branch, where he took a shower then came upon a red Chevrolet Silverado with the keys

in it. Berry traveled to Greenbrier where he met up with friends and decided to follow them to Texas because, he told investigators, he “had nowhere to go.” They went to Fort Worth and dropped off one of the people, then three or four days later, Berry was in Palestine or Tyler when he rear-ended a vehicle at a stop light. Berry fled the scene and ditched the Silverado in a subdivision, the report states. He said he

is important throughout the entire year,” said Jerry Owens, senior transportation manager at the Arkansas Division of Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation. “It is important for all motorists to know that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing.” In a one-day survey conducted in April, about 3,200 Arkansas school bus drivers reported more than 850 instances of motorists illegally passing their buses.

School is back in session. Arkansas is promoting the need for motorists to stop for school buses. The Arkansas Department of Education, the Arkansas Association of Pupil Transportation, and the Arkansas School Bus Mechanics Association teamed up to launch the sixth annual “Flashing Red. Kids Ahead” school bus safety campaign. The safety initiative will last the entire month of August. “When you see the flashing red lights on

Richard McCormac announces he is seeking re-election as mayor of the city of Clinton. “In the past four years, I have enjoyed working with our community, city departments, and other elected officials in moving our city toward a stronger infrastructure, promoting tourism, and working to generate greater economic opportunities,” McCormac states. “I am a Clinton native, graduating Clinton High School in 1983. I am married to my wife Gia, a ninth-grade English teacher here in Clinton, and have two children, Ellie and Carson. Before becoming your mayor, I served 11 years on the Clinton School board.” In his first term, McCormac, “I have worked diligently to improve our city’s infrastructure in order to prepare Clinton for the growth that the U.S. Highway 65 expansion is bringing and will continue to bring.” “I am very pleased with the direction and growth of our water and sewer department with the completed implementation of our new clarifier and the establishment of a five-member wa-

ter commission. In addition, the water and sewer line rehabilitation continues to be aggressively addressed with much needed repairs to our aging system. Our water system is rapidly improving.” With tourism at an all-time high, Clinton and Van Buren County sees between 13,000 20,000 vehicles per day, he states. “Our city will continue to promote our city park, Greers Ferrry Lake, and our numerous rivers and trails for all recreational purposes. Our former city officials have given us a great asset in our city park, which we have and will continue to improve and utilize. In the past four years, we have replaced our playground equipment, added a music stage, and acquired additional donated acreage for park expansion. Increased way-finding signage and a tourism billboard south of town currently help visitors easily locate our city’s amenities.” McCormac continues, “Our street department will continue to systematically improve our streets with the Memory Lane asphalt over-

lay to begin in late August. Ditch rehabilitation will be focused on this fall, due much in part to the relationship the city and I have developed with a fiberglass tile manufacturer. They have already donated thousands of feet of pipe used for culverts and utility line sleeving and will continue to do so as long as the city has need.” “As mayor of your city, I will continue to select the most qualified personnel available to lead and manage our various departments and allow them to do their job,” McCormac states, “I believe in controlling spending, planning for sustainable growth, and hard work. (“90% of our problems can be solved with hard work” - qtd. Dub Treece). We have several obstacles to overcome but will meet them head-on and work each of them out. If allowed to continue as mayor, I will focus on establishing a stronger industrial park for economic growth, strengthen our street department, and promote tourism via regional partnerships, working alongside our local entrepreneurs who are already doing great things. “I believe in working out solutions without getting bogged down

Clinton Cardinals Baseball The Clinton Cardinals played Hector on August 5, 2018 in Atkins. Starting pitcher for the Cardinals was Haydon Arnold, who pitched for Arkansas Tech in the past. He threw 4 innings, allowed 2 runs, struck out 1 and walked 4, but only allowed 2 base hits. Haydon was obvi-

ously rusty because he hasn’t thrown in awhile but was effective. Middle relief was John McKnight and closer was Phil Wyatt. Final Score was 13-7 in favor of the Cardinals. Nick “The Cannon” Tester went 3 for 4 with 3 singles, Trey “The Hurricane” Austin went 1 for 4, Andrew Slack went 1 for 4,

McKnight went 1 for 4 and Phil Wyatt went 1 for 4. Haydon not only helped pitch but he went 4 for 4 with 3 singles and a double. The Cardinals will be in Little Rock on Aug. 12 against the Little Rock A’s and the next home game will be Aug. 19 against Conway Dodgers.

Hey Skeeter, I was prowling around in the back bedroom the other day and you know what I found? I found the pet stroller that my human, Mary Jean, had bought for me in almost three years ago. I jumped right in the stroller and started meowing really loud. Mary Jean came running back to see what was wrong. And here I sat, pretty as you please, ready to go for a walk. Back in November 2015 I thought “Go for A Walk?” Dogs go for a walk. I’m a cat! Cats play. Well, I am three years older and more mature, you know. We went up and down the hallway a few times. Then Mary Jean says

Lefty takes a stroll let’s try going for a walk outside. She thought I was going to escape like I did when she first bought it. But I showed her! I just laid down and enjoyed the ride. She kept saying “Oh you’re doing so good, Lefty!” Well, you know I can be a good

Thelma Murray Shirley

Wanda Poynor is still having some health problems, she had to get a walker to keep from falling. Hope she gets better soon. James and Lovena Hutto just got back from a trip to Mexico Beach, Florida. Their son Randy Hutto and his family of seven and their son Doug Hutto and his family of five also went on a great family trip. Stan and Pam Murray and several others from Shirley went on a cruise to Alaska last week. They flew from , Dallas, Texas, to Seattle, Washington, and toured the city before boarding the tour boat for Alaska. They enjoyed seeing a whale put on a show for them in the ocean and going salmon fishing in Alaska. They a lot of pictures of the snowcapped mountains and made it home safely. There will be a Care Cap sew-in at the Van Buren County Library Wednesday, sponsored by the county E.H.C. We need all the help we can get. We will have a potluck meal. Thelma Murray visited the Alread E.H. club at their meeting on Thursday afternoon. They had sev-

en members present, and visited the Clinton club Thursday evening.

Patsy Ward Formosa

Donna and Richard Sherrod made a trip to Pea Ridge to spend a couple days with her sister, Marty Lehman. Richard had an appointment on Tuesday at the VA Renal clinic. Donna says he got a good report. That is good news! On Wednesday, they went to Evening Shade and then Donna went on to Highland to attend her 52nd class reunion. The home of the Highland Rebels! They decided to call it their 70th birthday bash, since they were all turning 70 this year. It sounds like they had a good time. Donna said they are thinking about go-

ing to the 64 galore yard sale. I think it may be too humid for me! Visiting De Lane Story last week was her grandson, Joey and Heather Story, of Roanoke, Virginia. Heather’s mother, Donna, also came. They spent the night and then left out for Denver to visit more relatives. I watered my garden and we wound up getting another good rain. We got almost 2 inches! We can definitely use it. Get well wishes go out to Jessica and Carol Ward. They are Marva and RG’s great-grandsons’ wives. Jessica started her chemo this week and Carol had surgery. Prayers and good thoughts go out to both of them. Marva and RG have been camping at the lake for a couple weeks. Sindee and David and John and Teresa joined them there and they have had all their great-grandkids. Their grandsons, Rylan and Landon, are visiting this week and are enjoying the camping.

I hope everyone has a good week and we get some more rain. Until next time, God bless.

Jeff Burgess Crabtree

Thursday, after sunset, the crescent moon pairs with the planet Jupiter. Look south. Next week, Tuesday night, the Alpha Cygnids Meteor Shower peaks at a rate of 5 per hour. The same night the moon pairs with the planet Saturn. Look to the south. August 25, Saturday, the Annual ACCDA Meeting & Taco Salad Supper is scheduled. Everyone’s invited. At the recent Crabtree Community Reunion, Izene Collins said he did not have time for his hay bale

Page 5 garden this year as he had gone back to work. But he remains a fan of the concept and hopes to have more time for it next year. Also at the reunion, Eunice Lemings talked about how successful Crabtree’s Senior Night Potluck had been in July. Her offering of BLTs was a big hit. She’s amazed how infrequently there are duplications at the potluck. She’s heard some complaints about the cancellation of August’s Potluck but said it’ll be back the last Friday in September with a theme of “Fall Colors.” Neighbor Johnny Fizjurl says he is having a record crop of Roma tomatoes and making lots of sauce. Also thriving are his purple-hulled peas, which he prefers to freeze. He finds shelling very relaxing and it helps him feel like he's doing something useful while watching DVDs. Saw my first locust of the season this past week and also my first Cicada Killer Wasp. While Cicada Killers are large and fierce-some looking they’re so focused on catching cicadas and mating they rarely bother people like some other wasps will. But play it safe and stay away and avoid stepping on them with bare feet as their burrows are in the ground. If you’ve never seen one, they are mostly black with pale yellow markings and often carrying a locust. If you have info about the greater Crabtree and 16 West community call Jeff

Burgess, 745-1249.

Kay Weaver Senior Centers

Winners of the pool tournament Aug. 4 at the Scotland Senior Center were: first place, Larry Larf; second place, Richard Owen; and third place, James Foreman. Clinton center has music on Tuesday by Mark Daniel and friends. Rusty from Lefler Estates plays some beautiful music on the piano. He is amazing. He does not let his handicap (being blind) keep hi from showing his talent. DeRay (the guy with purple hair) has been filling in at the Shirley kitchen. I ate lunch at Fairfield Bay Friday. Never thought I would eta cod, but the way they prepared it was very good. People need to take advantage of the transportation and go to Fairfield Bay to eat on Fridays. Why God gave us friends: He knew that we all need someone to share each happy day, to be a source of courage when trouble comes our way. Someone to be true to us, whether near or far apart, someone whose love we will always hold and treasure in our hearts. That is why God ave us friends.

An exercise even I can do Want to look young without even getting out of your chair? A recent study at Northwestern University found that simple exercises for your face will make you look three years younger. Start by pressing your fingers on your cheek bones with your index finger just below your eyelashes. Now make a squishy sour face. Come on, you’re good at that, I’ve seen you do it. You squint your eyes and squeeze your cheeks upward, hold for a count of five, and repeat this five time. This strengthens your cheek bones, of course.

Program over for summer The 2018 summer reading program and activities at the Van Buren County Library have drawn to a close. An average of 90 kids were in attendance each week to participate in the activities along with 30 very engaged and dedicated readers for the summer reading program. The summer reading program ran from June 4 to July 27 and here are the top readers for each age group/category for 2018: Family reader category, 1st place Lizzy Donell with 24 books read, 2nd place Alissa Allen with 18 books read. Individual category ages 7-12: 1st place Maryn Geidl with 11,100 pages read, 2nd place Kristen Berry with 10,700 pages read and 3rd place Jeremyah Green with 5,500. Individual category ages 13-18: 1st place Sam Geidl with 10,300 pages read. The winners received prizes. Watch the library's youth Facebook page for programs available during this upcoming school year.

Now, put your hands together to form a fist, then put your chin on top of the fist. Push down and create resistance with your hands, squint your eyes and push your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Again, do this for a count of five, five times. With your fists still under your chin, try to open your mouth, raise your eyebrows and push your tongue against the bottom of your mouth. Five and five again. Wait a minute, who are you now? I was just talking to somebody who looked a lot older. – Ron Henson, RN

Fishing Report

Erin, a Memphis, Tenn., guest of guide Mark Crawford shows off her first rainbow trout in her indoctrination to fly-fishing on the Spring River this past week.

Central Arkansas

Little Red River

(updated 8-82018) Greg Seaton of littleredflyfishingtrips. com (501-690-9166) said Heber Springs got about an inch and a half of rain on Tuesday night. The lower river has gotten about 5 inches over the last two days (Monday-Tuesday). The water below Winkley Shoal is stained but fishable. The report Greg got from the lower river at Ramsey was the river was muddy. All areas should clear with Wednesday evening’s generation if they don’t get more heavy rain. The generation remains the afternoon pattern with 4-5 hours each weekday and less on the weekend. The trout bite has been fair to good with blue-wing olive mayflies being the only hatch at this time. Small flies (size 18 and 20) have been the best producers, he said.

Greers Ferry Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 458.01 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 462.04 feet msl Oct.

1-April 30; 463.04 feet msl May 1-June 1; 462.54 feet msl June 1-Sept. 30). (updated 8-8-2018) Tommy Cauley of Fishfinder Guide Service (501-940-1318) said the water level at Greers Ferry Lake was at 458.00 feet msl at 7 a.m. Tuesday and falling with generation and evaporation. It is 4.54 feet below normal pool of 462.54 feet msl at present and with the generation schedule will continue to fall pretty quickly now when it gets this low, making the fish easier to target and the schooling activity to get better and better every day. Bream are getting ready for another spawn with the moon. Look real shallow and use crickets, crawlers, inline spinners and small crankbaits even out to 18 feet or so. Crappie are eating real well in 12-30 feet of water on minnows and jigs. Walleye are eating crawlers and crankbaits this time of year on bluffs and rocky flats and points in 1235 feet of water. Black bass are gorging on shad. Some bass are schooling all across the lake, while some are on the bank chasing bream, and some

are deeper and eating soft plastics and jigs. Hybrid and white bass are feeding well off and on all day and night on shad, small to large bait fish. Use inline spinners, spoons and swimbaits from the surface down to 55 feet. Catfish catching is good all around the lake.

North Arkansas

White River

(updated 8-8-2018) Cotter Trout Dock (870435-6525) says fishing on the White River below Bull Shoals Dam was a treat this week; the weather was mild for early August, the river level was low, the water clear and cold, and the trout were biting – a lot. Didn't take too much to keep the bait near the bottom, and the rainbowssnatched your bait if you kept a little shrimp on the hook. Water releases have occurred midday but the rise isn't seen until late afternoon in the Cotter area. The action on jigs has been great at the minimum flow water depth, and when the water begins to come in, turn to nightcrawlers or red wigglers. Favorite spot for browns this week was

the power lines below Rim Shoals where they're hitting sculpins and crawdads regularly. “We had a pretty dry July in north central Arkansas and, except for some rain (Tuesday) afternoon, it's likely to stay dry with the lake remaining a little below power pool and no reason to release more except to meet power demands. I think the water release pattern has been set for the coming weeks: extremely low levels (wading paradise) during the morning hours until mid- to late afternoon. Expect low water and no afternoon increase on weekends. Come and test the waters and enjoy the Natural State with us.” (updated 8-8-2018) Sportsman’s White River Resort (870453-2424) said the water clarity is good, with minimum flows in the morning and 6-7 and even 8 generators running in the afternoon. Trout catches have been good; lots of folks have been fishing for rainbows. Waxworms or PowerBait are a great way to go, along with stick baits and sculpins. The browns really love the sculpins; the rainbows will go for the stick baits.

Bull Shoals Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 658.00 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 659.00 feet msl). (updated 8-82018) Del Colvin at Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock said the lake water is starting to cool off, which is helping the fishing. They have 84-degree temperatures as of Wednesday. Del says, “I’d say the biggest bite for the lake has been the wall-

eye. The walleye have been really good this past week.” Anglers are bottom-bouncing from 28-36 feet around main lake points and secondary points. “Everybody seems to be catching them.” As far as the largemouth bass fishing goes, pretty much the early morning topwater bite seems to be on the “moving” baits rather than on poppers or the walk-the-dog style baits. Del says buzzbaits and the Whopper Plopper are working. Some of the shad have migrated into the creeks. He notes that threadfin shad appear headed about halfway to three-quarters back. “I think it’s the rains we’ve gotten that have pulled them back there, and (the Army Corps of Engineers) haven’t been running a bunch of water (at Bull Shoals Dam). The Corps has it at minimum flow.” The Kentucky bass seem to be around the channel swing banks or suspending over trees. There are tons of trees in Bull Shoals Lake, he says. Del adds that “you can never go wrong with a halfounce football head jig on Bull Shoals Lake. Big worms are also working. Anything with red in it will work.” Crappie are mostly random these days. There are a couple of regular crappie anglers that Del seems often, but he said he hasn’t seen them going out lately.

Norfork Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 552.96 feet msl (normal conservation pool: September-April 552.00 feet msl; April-September, 554.00 feet msl). (updated 8-8-2018)

Tom Reynolds of STR Outfitters said, “The striper bite on Norfork Lake is awesome right now. My son and I are catching limits both morning and evening. I see everybody catching stripers, guides both live and artificial, trollers, and spooners.” Tom says the best bite is using live bait. If you can get out on the lake before light, say 5 a.m., and hit points with sloping flats around 35 to 40 feet like Koso, you can limit on hybrids and stripers before light or shortly thereafter. Once the sun comes up, the fish move to deeper water but are still catchable. Tuesday this week, Tom caught stripers in 42 feet of water and 1 hour later he had his limit in water depths of 130 feet. He says the trollers are having good luck this year because the stripers are high in the water column and eager to feed. In years past the stripers tended to stay close to the bottom and trolling lures proved very difficult to reach them. The best bite now is within sight of the dam from Georges Cove to the dam and from Thumb Point to Hand Cove. Look on any point or side of points starting in 40 feet of water and keep moving out, zig-zagging until you find them. Tom also reports that the white bass and smallmouth bass are feeding all over the lake on this year's shad hatch. “I see them in the main lake and halfway up the creek arms. One very good spot is the big flat below location 6B past Fout Marina. Small topwater plugs or spoons are the best bait to catch them.”

Diana Dudzik works on a painting.

Artist paints from the heart by Charlotte Rierson

Diane Dudzik, the artist behind Dudzik Art, paints by her motto, “Art from the Heart,” capturing her love of animals and serene landscapes in realistic oil or soft pastel paintings. She was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1970. Her family moved to the country outside Bryant when she was young. This led to her living a country girl’s life, which included dogs, cats, ducks, chickens, geese and one mean bull. Most days would find her outside with the animals, hiking in the woods or riding her bicycle. High school art classes introduced

her to a variety of arts and crafts, sparking a newfound love that never died. However, it took a back seat when in 1989 she moved to Clinton, Arkansas to marry her husband, Danny. Now married for 29 years, they’ve raised their two boys, Spencer and Ryan, in the small town with big views. With her kids now older, she decided to give art another go. It started with colored pencils but progressed to soft pastels, then eventually to acrylics and oils. Today, she enjoys painting in realism with oils and soft pastels. In 2017, her art hung in a solo display in First Security Bank in Clinton, Arkan-

sas.. These days you can find it on display at the Ozark Health Medical Center and the NCA Art Gallery in Fairfield Bay. Pieces of her art are found in private collections throughout the country. She is a member of the North Central Arkansas Artist League and ABUN (Artists & Biologists Unite for Nature). She also paints commissioned art for private individuals. Visit her website, DudzikArt.com. The North Central Arkansas Art Gallery hours are 9 a.m.4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. For more information about the Art Gallery contact NCA Art Coordinator, Charlotte Rierson at 501-884-6100.
