BANNER MOUNTAIN GIRL

Counting down to Christmas Fifteen days until Christmas! Have you started shopping? Or, for those who are well-organized, have you finished shopping? Does your family gather together to celebrate? Or do you take a vacation, maybe to the beach? Or to the mountains where snow is guaranteed? Our family spent one Christmas in the Colorado mountains, and it turned out to be a happy occasion. When we first arrived, a gentle snow was fall-

ing, creating an atmosphere that all of us enjoyed. The grandchildren especially loved the white Christmas. I’m sure there must have been white Christmases in my childhood, at Banner Mountain, but I don’t recall any specific one. I loved the snow though and we kids made snowmen and threw snowballs at each other. Mama made ice cream from fresh soft snow. It was tasty with vanilla flavoring. We trailed the

rabbit tracks through the pristine snow, but, not sure we ever caught up with a rabbit. At the Banner school, we always had a Christmas program and the students exchanged gifts with one another. My brother, Bill, received a gift one Christmas from a classmate, who had no money to buy a gift. His present to Bill was wrapped in newspaper rolled around and around like a big ball. Bill kept unwrapping the newspaper until finally he saw the gift – a marble. One little marble wrapped in lots of paper. My brother always remembered that gift and retold the story many times. Perhaps it meant more than a store-bought present would have. My own

parents often had little money for gifts but we always celebrated Christmas. The year my mother gave birth to my brother on December 18th, my daddy saved Christmas Day. He made the meal and tried his hand at homemade candy, the family’s only gift that year, unless we count hearts filled with love and gratitude. I trust my own family – our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are aware of our love for each other as we recall the birth of Christ in Bethlehem that First Christmas — the reason we celebrate. One Christmas with our children was different from those of the past. That year, our family, consist-

David Wayne Harkness, 54, of Clinton has been charged with theft of property over $1,000 but less than $5,000, a Class D felony, and domestic battery-third degree, a misdemeanor. On Nov. 30, a Clinton man reported that Harkness beat him up and took his 1997 Ford Mustang, according to an affidavit for arrest. Carli Katlyn Love, 25, of Childersburg,

ing of my husband and me, four grown children, their spouses, and five grandchildren, decided to make hand-made gifts. A whole year seemed like plenty of time for each person to make one gift so we drew names with anticipation. I imagined that hammers would pound, saws would buzz and needles would click during the year as we set to work making Christmas so different we would cherish it as one of our best. With only a few days until Christmas, nobody seemed to have completed a gift and some had not even started. At least one member kept saying,

Alabama, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, both Class D felonies. Love was stopped while driving on Highway 65 South on Nov. 27, 2019. Deputy Sonny Clifford said he clocked her vehicle traveling between 70 and 74 mph. Her arraignment is set for De. 16, 2019, in Van Buren County Circuit Court. She was released on $1,000 bond.

“Where am I going to find time to make something? Anyway, I always liked shopping for Christmas!” Another said he can’t make anything. That’s what he said when we decided on this plan but nobody believed him. Suddenly, with no homemade gift in sight, we believed him. But that was OK. We knew that the person whose name he had drawn would somehow receive a gift. What about the grandchildren, ages 8 through 11 — what could they make? Or did I underestimate them? Some of them had made key chains for yard sales, so they See Christmas on page 12

A Christmas quiz

95th birthday celebration Marguerite Gilmore celebrated her 95th birthday at the Petit Jean Electric Community Room on Saturday, November 30. Although her birthday wasn't until a few days later, that was when her many loved ones from around the world could all be together. Born in Buffalo, New York she joined the United States Navy as a WAVE during World War II. She later married Matt

K. Gilmore, a sailor from Johnson County, Arkansas. During their long marriage, they and their family lived in many locations, including Guam, Alaska and Midway Island before retiring to the Culpepper Mountain community. Attendees at the party included relatives from England, Panama and Abu Dhabi as well as Washington, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and Oregon.

I have been giving folks this Christmas Quiz for decades now and it is one of the most popular and revealing things I’ve ever seen. People question me over the answers I give. Actually my textbook is the Bible and you can check the answers by your own Bible if you like. Some argue. Others get upset when they find out how little they know about the Christmas story and they’ve celebrated Christmas all their lives! We get out of school for two weeks, out of work for so several day, Christmas bonuses and presents galore. You should know something about

the birth of the one who brings us all these gifts and good cheer. Perhaps you don’t know as much about the Christmas story as you thought. We will see. Try this simple Christmas Story Trivia Quiz and see how you do. The answers are at the bottom of the article, but don’t look before you mark your answers. Get a pen, write down your answers, and have fun. ______ 1. How did Joseph & Mary travel to Bethlehem? (a) by donkey, (b) by camel, (c) on foot, (d) the Bible doesn’t say. ______ 2. Which animals were present at Jesus’ birth?

elves were there to help out all around. If you been in the Bay within the last few months and drove Lynn Creek Crossing you would have noticed the road construction. That was being done to rebuild the south side of the crossing that the heavy rain washed out. We started out with a deadline in May but because of the high lake level the crew was not able to begin. The mayor was able to get a new deadline in December and it is done. Looks very nice and I’m hoping that the grass seed on the south side will take. It will be nice if the city will add some “No Parking” signs at the crossing. But again the Lynn Creek Crossing is done. Who’s been up at the Indian Hills Complex? They cut down all the pine trees from

the front of the complex. And will be adding new parking in the area. Bringing up “cutting trees,” I drove down to the campground just the other day and in section D I noticed trees with blue paint on some. Then I drove to section C and darn it, it looks like a tornado with through there. So, I just had to stop at the marina and ask what was going on. Jorn the dock manager informed me that the Corps of Engineers are doing all the

work, thinning out the pines and hardwood trees. Jorn also told me that the corps is hauling the large part of the trees away but leaving the rest for the community club to clean up. Have to say it will be hard to have the haunted campground there next year, but a few of us are looking for a better and close area for the haunted spot. We will figure it out.

Most people are surprised because we get much of what we know from church cantatas and Christmas programs that try to tie everything together, complete with little kids dressed up in cute little animal outfits, shepherds and wise men (always three of them) showing up at the same time. Crowded stable, huh? The true story cen-

ters on Jesus Christ, who he is and how he came into this world. The Bible says, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” The angel told Joseph, “You shall call his name Jesus for he will save his people from their sins.” He could not have died on a cross to save us without first being born into this world. “He was in the world, but the world did not know him. He came to his own but his own did not receive him. But to as many as received him, to them he gave the right to be called the children of God, to as many as believe on his name.” So as Christmas draws close, let’s remember to keep Christ in Christmas. He is the reason for the season. It is, after all, his birthday we celebrate. Merry Christmas, everyone.

The full moon is official Wednesday night at 11:12 p.m., and often called the Cold Full Moon and Long Nights Moon. There’s Quilting from 9 to 11 a.m., and the monthly meeting is at 1:30 p.m., in the EHC building, near Alread, on Thursday. There’s a 4 p.m. potluck in the cafeteria followed by the lighting of the lights at dusk. Santa, caroling, cookies and hot chocolate are all part of the merriment. The community is invited. Fishing Report

This youngster landed a huge hybrid striper Saturday on Norfork Lake. Photo provided by Lou Gabric at Hummingbird Hideaway Resort.

Central Arkansas

Little Red River

(updated 12-4-2019) Greg Seaton of littleredflyfishingtrips.com (501690-9166) said the river is clear but the latest rain put the lake back in the flood pool and generation has been two units for a 12-hour period for the last four days and is scheduled for the same Wednesday. This provides little wading opportunities. Drift-fishing is fair to good by staying ahead of the new generation. The brown trout are beginning to move and “we’ll have to wait until after the generation is reduced to be able to tell if the spawn has actually started. I feel like the increased generation will spur the browns to move to the shoals. As always, please avoid the redds while wading to ensure the eggs hatch and produce our brown trout. The Little Red does not stock browns and these eggs are our only source for this beautiful trout. The redds will appear as clean areas on the gravel bottom and will almost “shine” in the clear water. Again, please do not

wade thru these areas.” Greg says to check the generation schedule before planning your trip.

North Arkansas

White River

(updated 12-4-2019) John Berry of Berry Brothers Guide Service in Cotter (870-4352169) said that during the past week, they had several rain event (almost an inch in Cotter), cold temperatures (to include winter weather advisories) and heavy winds (to include lake wind advisories). The lake level at Bull Shoals rose 1.6 feet to rest at 13.5 feet above seasonal power pool of 659 feet msl. This is 22.5 feet below the top of flood pool. Upstream, Table Rock rose 1.1 feet to rest at 3.1 feet above seasonal power pool and 12.9 feet below the top of flood pool. Beaver Lake rose 0.6 foot to rest at 9 feet above seasonal power pool and 0.6 foot below the top of flood pool. The White had heavy generation with some limited wadable water. Norfork Lake rose 1 foot to rest at 6.6 feet above seasonal power pool of 553.75 feet msl and 20.2 feet

below the top of flood pool. The Norfork had heavy generation with and no wadable water. Seasonal power pool has been reset for the lakes in the White River system. Due to heavy rains over the last few weeks all of the lakes in the White River System are now over the top of power pool. Expect heavy generation for the near future. The catch-and-release section below Bull Shoals Dam is closed until Jan. 31 to accommodate the brown trout spawn. The state park will be seasonal catchand-release for the same period. All brown trout must be immediately released. In addition, night fishing is prohibited in this area during this period. The section will reopen to fishing on Feb. 1. The White has fished well. The hot spot has been the Rim Shoals. The hot flies were olive Woolly Buggers (sizes 8, 10), Y2Ks (sizes 14, 12), prince nymphs (size 14), zebra midges (black with silver wire and silver bead or red with silver wire and silver bead sizes 16, 18), pheasant tails (size 14), ruby midges (size 18),

root beer midges (size 18), pink and cerise San Juan worms (size 10), and sowbugs (size 16). Double-fly nymph rigs have been very effective (John’s current favorite combination is a cerise high water San Juan worm with an egg pattern suspended below it). Use long leaders and plenty of lead to get your flies down. Remember that the White and Norfork Rivers and Dry Run Creek are infected with didymo, an invasive alga. Be sure and thoroughly clean and dry your waders (especially the felt soles on wading boots) before using them in any other water. Many manufacturers are now making rubber soles that are easier to clean and are not as likely to harbor didymo.

Norfork Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 558.07 feet msl (normal conservation pool: Sept.-April, 552.00 feet msl; AprilSept., 555.75 feet msl). (updated 12-4-2019) Lou Gabric at Hummingbird Hideaway Resort said he experienced a fantastic bite Tuesday morning for hybrids, stripers and white bass, and he expects that as long as the weather stays stable, he believes the late fall bite will be fantastic. Lou adds, “ I hope all had a great Thanksgiving. Linda and I hosted Linda’s side of the family at the resort and we had a great time and ate way too much. One of our meals during the week was a Norfork Lake Crappie fish fry, and, boy, was it good.” He says Norfork Lake fishing has had some ups and downs

this fall with all the changing weather patterns. “This was especially true last week when I fished with family members every day except when the weather was too rainy or too windy. We caught some fish, but it was definitely a difficult fishing week. The last frontal system past through us (Monday) morning, so the lake had a day to stabilize and (Tuesday) was a fantastic fishing and catching day. “I began doing a lot of graphing. I started out on the 101 bridge flat and found a lot of bait out in 70-plus feet of water, but very few fish. I headed back to the Cranfield Island flat and graphed, but saw little. I then headed back to the Pigeon Creek area and again found lots of bait and also found more fish, but the fish were scattered and did not appear to be feeding. I checked out a few other areas with little success until about 9:30 a.m. Once again on a large flat, I found streams of bait 20 feet thick with schools of fish on top of the bait. They did not appear to be feeding, but within 15 minutes the bait began to scatter and more and more fish appeared in a feeding frenzy, which lasted for the next 2 hours. I was in 30-40 feet of water and was vertical-jigging a spoon. After spooning up my first hybrid I decided to set out two down lines with live threadfin shad. I set one at 23 feet and the other was at 30 feet. It did not take long until the live bait was getting hit. To show how good the bite was, at one point I had my spoon on the bottom and saw that I missed a bite on a live bait. I set my spooning rod in a

Page 9

rod holder and started to reel in the live bait rod. I heard a rattling and saw my spooning rod double over. I landed a nice 10-pound hybrid. The stripers and hybrid have been very mobile, so you need to keep looking at the different flats on the lake, once you find the bait start looking around for feeding fish, if none move to the next flat. The fish will be somewhere feeding. I often go back to the same flat where I had found bait and fish at a later time and many times the fish have gotten energized. “When you find the feeding frenzy of fish, all species may be in the same area. Today I landed walleye and crappie on the spoon. Other days largemouth bass have been plentiful. With all the scattered fish I am marking, it might be a great time to troll. Keep your bait at 20-30 feet and stay in 40-70 feet of water. If you can stay on the bait, you will catch some nice fish. Umbrella rigs, A-rigs, swimbaits or deep diving crankbaits are good baits to troll with. “In general, crappie are still hanging in the brush on the tops of the brush. They will be anywhere from 8-25 feet down on brush in 40 feet or less. Don’t hesitate to check out some very shallow brush on these sunny days, the crappie may move up. “Bass fishing has basically stayed the same as my last report. Early and late in the day look up in 10-20 feet of water. Work a jig or worm slowly along the bottom. As you know I like to find the deep bass. They will be in 2540 feet of water.
