Shop with a Cop Benefits Kids By Warren Johnson

Sheriff Lucas Emberton said, "last Tuesday night, we distributed the gifts from Shop with a Cop, which benefited over fifty children in our community." We changed things up a little bit this year, so the volunteers and families could safely social distance. We had a drivethrough service in the city park instead of everyone going to Walmart. All of our volunteers and helpers worked hard to coordinate so we could keep everyone safe. Emberton said, "To all of the people and various agencies who helped give fifty-five children a great Christmas in our county, on behalf of our board, We appreciate it very much." In addition to gifts, the kids received pizza, canned goods, and other food items, books, and stuffed animals!

County Judge Dale James began his address to the justices by stating, "This has been a challenging year. You have led the community in a manner to which we have not merely survived, but we have thrived. Each of you has made tough calls and have proven your-

selves as worthy leaders. You have embraced fiscal responsibility to streamline and make our government more efficient. I appreciate you giving more than lip service to your commitment to the citizens of Van Buren County by putting your people first, See Budget on page 2

clear, many reported not being able to leave their driveways for several hours. Roy Puckett and his daughter Colleen from Dennard enjoyed the day sled-

Dear Editor, This is a first for me; I've never written a "letter to the editor." I never really had a reason to until I read the News article about Jeanie Williams and the quorum court's decision to terminate her job over the lack of money in their budget. "Just can't find it," they said. "We're strapped for cash, and there's nowhere to drain any from the swamp." Next came the knockout punch. "We can replace you with a few volunteers"—what a jolt. It reminds me of the old Gater McClusky movie - take her out in the swamp - tie cinder blocks to her feet and throw her in. Good one, Judge. Maybe none of them even realize what her job consists of. Yet I do. I work for Petit Jean Ele as a lineman, have for years, and I see her year round, in every situation. Tornados, fires, ice storms, floods - every disaster we face here. And any time day or night, she's there - doing her job. Taking care of business Tending to the people's needs, doing whatever she has to do. The girl knows her job! Well, there is nothing else to say, but I'm sorry Jeanie. I know what we're losing. And I'll bet a dollar to a donut - the next time I'm out in a 0 degree ice storm and they call for Volunteers - No one's gonna show. Bill Bonds Clinton Letters to the editor are the opinion of the writer.

Christmas will be different this year Christmas, this year, will be different from all other Christmases I’ve experienced because of the guidelines for Covid19. In March, the Coronavirus was declared a global pandemic. With the virus cases continuing to rise in Van Buren County, my family remains cautious. Since March, Gene and I have sheltered in place, doing curbside pickup for groceries, only going out for the necessary errands.

None of our children will be coming home for Christmas. One son lives close by, and maybe we can socially distance him and his family, Christmas Day. Then, there is Facetime, texting, and phone calls, so maybe those methods of communication will bring a spark of the Christmas spirit to our hearts. It was convenient to order presents through the internet. It made me think of the

Sears Christmas Wish Book. I also asked some family members to help out by shopping for me. While all of that is okay, it’s not the same as when I could go shopping to pick out the gifts. I recall shopping, as a child, one Christmas. Yvonne and I had one quarter between us to spend on a gift for Mama. We shopped at the Privitt’s Store in Shirley. We picked out a glass fruit bowl that cost a quarter. We thought the bowl was so beautiful. I don’t remember what Mama thought or said about that bowl. But I’m sure she used it many times. She kept it through the years. After she passed away, that bowl was given to me. And I still have it. I’ve always cherished the memory of how it felt to give a

gift to someone I love as much as I loved my mother. The joy of giving is greater than the joy of receiving. But I have also enjoyed receiving various gifts from my own children through the years as the four of them grew up—heart-warming gifts. Humorous gifts. Gifts that show me they love me. And from my husband, too, I’ve received special presents. He’s given me gifts of satin negligees, perfume, pretty dresses, rings, necklaces. Those are all lovely when you are still a young married girl. But, as time goes on, you also appreciate household items as gifts to make your home comfortable. I specifically remember when I worked part-time at a dress shop, a man came in and bought a beautiful negligee for his wife for

Christmas. The man happened to be an old boyfriend of mine from back in my high school days. Know what my gift was that Christmas from my husband? It was a bathroom scale! But it was given with love, and I loved it! Just as I love him and always will. Christmas is a time to fill our hearts with love––because God first loved us and sent his Son, Jesus, to be our savior. “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) He is the same during this Christmas when Covid19 hangs heavy about us, changing our routine, our tradition. We can still show our love for others. May we allow His love to shine through the darkness of this different Christmas Day. Merry Christmas to all!

now operating out of a third rock quarry in the Fairbanks area. He added, "This will enable us to gather fill material much closer to each worksite, which will improve productivity and save on trucking and fuel expenses." He added, "We will continue to source finished material from the Formosa quarry due to the high-quality product produced there." The total gravel and rock produced and distributed so far in 2020 are 120,000 tons, which is as much as was distributed during the gas boon's peak. The cost of making our rock with all prices included was

$3.56 per ton. The approximate retail price of the product we produced this year would have been over 1.2 million dollars. By making our gravel and fill in

house, we have saved approximately $773,000 this year. The public may view the meeting in its entirety with a link on the Voice's Facebook page.

Unlike other showers that can go on for days, this one is short lived, but up to 120 per hour after midnight are possible. The county’s first winter weather event has come and gone, delighting kids of all ages in the northern part of the county. It started as rain Sunday afternoon but quickly added sleet and then snow after dark. By Monday morning I had over 2 inches in my yard and a friend near Chimes said it was near 4 inches there. It was the wet kind and great for snowman building, snowball fights and snow angels. Due to cooler temperatures hanging on, 5 days later north and east facing slopes at higher elevations were still draped in white. I heard no reports of it adversely affecting travel. If you have info about the greater Crabtree and west Hwy. 16 community, call or text Jeffry Burgess, 745-1249.

Lois Compton is still doing good, and she wishes all a Merry Christmas. Freda Sowell and her family had an early Christmas dinner at Ashley and Jacob Bane's house with their son Jasper of Greers Ferry. Others in attendance were Blade, Clair, and Sierra Gann, with Becky and Joshua Gentry and their sons Brody and Braylen. They loaded up in two cars after lunch and drove to Batesville, where they went to look at some beautiful Christmas lights. Jimmy Hooten hosted a Hooten get together at his home with his sisters Wanda and Paul Poynor and Carolyn and Joey Ussery of Greenbrier on Saturday. Davis Special Extension Club, members Becky Burgess, Valle Kay Shull, and Rossie Phillips got together and packed Christmas bags for people at Indian Rock Villiage and some senior citizens around Shirley; Jo Carol Hamilton brought things to go in the bags and returned home. Santa and his helpers handed out gifts to children in around 70 cars on Saturday on Christmas in Shirley. Have you ever thought about how much life a big oak tree supports, like ants, worms, snakes, squirrels, food for deer, squirrel, and birds of many kinds, and shelter for shade-loving plants as well as people and lumber for homes? I am sure an investigation could come up with a lot more answers— something to consider when we think about

R. G. Ward spent most of this week in Greenwood with his grandsons, Rylan and Landon, who were out of school part of the week. Ann Mann has a new ride. She got a pretty red Chevy Equinox. She likes it very much, and it's a pretty one! I spent most of Tuesday in Conway this week and all of Thursday. I got all my medical appointments in for the year. I think I'm good until May if nothing comes up! Ann came up, and we played cards and dominoes on Friday evening. I won the card games, and she took the dominoes! I visited with Ruth Webb for a couple of hours one day this week. DeLane Story went to her eye Doctor on Thursday. She got a good report and is really glad. That is great news! Her son David and his son, Joey, came last Tuesday and spent the week with her. They will be returning to Virginia this week. I know they all enjoyed the visit and DeLane's good cooking! Barbara Ashley of Maumelle came to visit her mother, Sammy Story, on Friday. They attended the funeral of Brian Story. Condolences go out to his family. Donna and Richard Sherrod, along with Ann Mann, went to Conway shopping one day this week. They went to Searcy on Friday to spend some time with their son, David, and his family. His daughter was there from Texas, so they got to spend some time with her too. That's all for this week, maybe next time I will have more. Get well wishes to all who are having health problems— prayers for a better day ahead. I want to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas. May all your prayers be answered. God bless, and have a good week.

Our daughter-inlaw has been here since James had his surgery on the 17th of September. They live in Anchorage, and this weather is so different from theirs. It was very warm when she first came, and then it cooled off, and she certainly enjoyed it being in the '60s, especially when she heard that it snowed and got down to zero and below in Anchorage. She went home two days before we got our snow. She was undoubtedly a blessing. She came to stay and help take care of James until he finished his radiation. She did all of the driving, shopping, laundry, and anything else that needed to be done. I

could not have done everything without her help. James still has a long way to go, but we are getting there. We are staying isolated and not going anywhere to get exposed to the virus. Several folks at Scotland that had tested positive are out of quarantine and feeling much better, and some that have been sicker are on the mend. I know when we are offered the vaccine, we plan to take it. I think the vaccine and wearing a mask is going to be the thing that will help our country heal. Not much to say because we do not see many people, but if you have Scotland news, call 592-3935, and we will see that it get in the paper. Stay safe and warm.

Bryan Seth Story

On December 12, 2020, Bryan Seth Story passed peacefully into his heavenly father's loving arms. Bryan was born in Nuernberg, Germany, to Steven Bryan Story and Anita (Duncan) Wilkinson on September 23, 1988. He is survived by his three children Chelsea Ellen, Nathan Bryan, and Katherine Elizabeth Story, who were his greatest joy. Bryan is also survived by his parents Steven Story and Anita (Duncan) Wilkinson, brother and sister-inlaw Steven Tyler and Ashleigh Story, niece Jaelyn Story, nephew Lincoln Story, spare-mom Tiffiney Story, Anita's life partner Terry Lovell, Terry's daughters Kimberly Dean and Jennifer Lovell, step-sisters Kat and Elizabeth Wilkinson, five aunts, two uncles, and numerous cousins. Bryan was a proud father, a loving son, and a devoted brother who proudly served our country in the United States Army. Bryan was proud to be a soldier in the Army. He earned expert rifle and expert grenade qualifications, the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon. He loved being a part of something bigger than himself and helping his fellow man. When thinking of Bryan's legacy, the words used to describe him are universal. Generosity, even to a fault, was his most dominant character trait. If anyone were in need, Bryan would give to them, even if it meant he would go without. He had a huge heart full of love. His greatest love was that for his three children. You could see his eyes light up when seeing, hearing, or even talking about his children. His children have shared fond memories of his loving and caring nature. He was brave for them, showing by example how to do something they were scared to do. They all loved going to water parks together. Bryan always enjoyed time with his family. His robust laughter and genuine, wide smile would fill a moment. Bryan was goofy, funny, and playful; He was a daredevil and a jokester. Bryan was caring, kind, and loving. He had a sweetheart, and he was the most empathetic person many of us will ever meet, though there were times when his strong stubbornness certainly shone

through. He will also be remembered for his drawing capabilities and his enormous love of animals. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Sam Shannon, JR officiated services with pallbearers Mike Story, Steve Bradley, JB Story, Samuel Story, Garrett Bradley, and Preston Story. Funeral services were held at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Clinton, Arkansas, on Friday, December 18, 2020, at 2:00 pm. Interment followed at Culpepper Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to establish an Education Savings Account for Bryan's children; please contact the family for further details.

Ellen Couch

Ellen (Thomas) Couch, 78, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed from this life on Saturday, December 12th, 2020, at her home with her family by her side. In Jonesboro, Arkansas, she was born on August 20th, 1942, to Mr. James and Mrs. Sadie (Wade) Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Sherry Couch, and her siblings, Otis Thomas, Leo Thomas, Wanda (Thomas) Beakley, and Anita Thomas. Ellen is survived by her son, Terry Hatcher, her daughter, Rhonda Lands, her grandchildren, Cari Scott and husband Nelson Scott, Malory Hatcher, Jennifer Hatcher, her great-granddaughter, Melisa Treat, a special niece, Mary Brown, and cherished cousin Diann Dee (Thomas) Hale. She also has many other family and friends who will remember her fondly. General Electric Corporation employed Ellen for 20 years. While working for General Electric, she worked her way through college, earning her Nursing Degree. She was very proud of her RN achievement. For 17 years, she was House Supervisor at Pinnacle Point Hospital in Little Rock, AR. She was the Director of Nursing for Charter by the Sea in Georgia. She was a Nursing Supervisor at Greenleaf Behavioral Health in Jonesboro, AR. She was a trailblazer in Mental Health and Substance Abuse treatment and programs that positively impacted countless families. It was so important to her she completed extra education to become an RNC (Registered Nurse Counselor). She was a treatment member of the 14th Judicial District Drug Task Force. She

was the secretary of CADA (Community Action on Drug Abuse) and an Adult advisor of the DFYIT (Drug-Free Youth in Town). She chartered and promoted the annual July 4th picnic, ''Independence from Drugs Day'' for those recovering from substance abuse and was on the board of the Women's Recovery Center. She was so loved and respected in the nursing field that a few nurses even traveled to Georgia from Arkansas to work for Ms. Ellen. Her greatest love was family gatherings and spending quality and quantity time with her family whom she loved. She loved spending her time at the lake. Ellen couldn't swim, but she could ski in her younger days. She delighted in the lives of her precious Cari and Melisa. Ellen was always thinking of others. She asked what Melissa, her great-granddaughter wanted for her birthday while in ICU. Post-surgery, to sending extra McDonald's coupons to family member's kids, to traveling to Indiana for the birth of her 3rd cousin's child, to finding the perfect embroidered gift for a couple's wedding she had just met. She enjoyed traveling to see new areas of the country, and if there were a nearby Casino, she would have to check it out. She was involved in many community functions and activities. She was enthusiastically active in politics and was proud of the Democratic process. Ellen loved her time spent with the Yacht Club of Fairfield Bay. Rhonda, her daughter, can't remember a time when they spent more than a few days apart. Everyone that knows Ellen and Rhonda's relationship knows their love needs no statement. Terry, her son, remembers the love and laughs only a mother and son could share. He was given the opportunity to move closer to be in her presence every day for the past year and remembered watching Wheel of Fortune and CNN with Ellen daily. Ellen was very close to her cousins, the Thomas sisters, Diann "Dee" Thomas Hale, Eileen Thomas Bolrigini, Sharon Thomas Messer, Pamela Thomas Scott, and Betty Carol Thomas Garrison. She enjoyed CRAZY fun annual gatherings with her cousins, who she considered more like sisters. Dee loved Ellen so much that she moved to Fairfield Bay to be close to her. Ellen wasn't Ellen to me; she was Memaw. My whole life, she was my Memaw, and she always will be. There aren't enough words in the world for me to express how much she meant to me, to tell all of the fun adventures we had, all of the laughs and inside jokes we shared, and all of the times one of us said ''shhh... don't tell anyone but‌'' I will miss the gossip we would have when I would come over in the morning for coffee. She was so proud of her ''Great Grand'' Melisa. Melisa is

about 50 percent of what we would talk about on those mornings. If you knew her, I am sure you heard lots of bragging about her precious Melisa Cheyenne. I don't think I ever saw her smile as big as she did when Melisa would walk in her door. She was always there for me in any way I needed her, and I will forever be grateful for her kindness. If I had known what was coming, I would have done things differently. I would have done all of the things people usually say, like call more, and visit more often, but I would have immediately went to the salon and got my hair dyed platinum blonde ;) I miss her every day, and I know that won't change, so I choose to remember the happy times. I will never know another person who cared about me the way she did, someone who would do anything to put a smile on my face. I will definitely never know someone who will talk to me for 30 more minutes after we've already said goodbye three times and send me home with at least three random items and a newspaper clipping that I might want to read. I love you so much, Memaw, and I can't wait to share all the juicy gossip with you when we see each other again. ~ Cari Scott My grandparents passed away when I was a little kid; I really don't have many memories of them. Ellen made me part of her family; she made me feel loved and wanted; she became my Memaw too. Memaw was always up for a good conversation, she was intelligent and engaging, and I always enjoyed our talks. Conversations with Memaw will be greatly missed. She will be missed but never forgotten. ~ Nelson Scott This is a great memory that I have. My brother Preston and Ellen were driving to Dallas together when my daughter Cari was born. He said, ''I don't know what the baby will look like, but she has the best looking grandmother I've ever seen'' ~ Randy Tate. Roller McNutt is honored to be entrusted with Ellen's arrangements. This Whillock series began two weeks ago with John Wheelock (1750-1843) and his wife, Sarah Kincheloe (1754-1837), their son, Enoch (17941853), and wife Lucinda (1800-1850) all of East Tennessee. Enoch and Lucinda's son, George Washington Whillock (1838-1882), was born in Tennessee, married Margaret Irene Robertson (18461918) in Roane County, Tennessee, and moved to Marshall in Searcy County, Arkansas, in the late 1860s. George and Margaret had four sons and one daughter; three of the sons, John William, Joseph Tolliver, and Jacob Shem, settled in and raised their families in Van Buren County. Last week's installment featured the eldest son, John W., so that this week will cover the second son, Joseph Tolliver Whillock, and his family. Joseph Tolliver "Tollie" Whillock was born in Marshall on 11 October 1871 and was married there on 6 January 1897 to Esther Gray (6 January 1879 - 27 September 1950), the daughter of Butler Polk and Harriet (Rogers) Gray of Marshall. In 1949, when Roy Dean Dempsey was thirteen, his family owned a farm in the Burnt Ridge community several miles east of Clinton. Like most farmers, the family traveled to town once a week on wagons pulled by horses or mules. Only a fortunate few had trucks and rarely were those trucks new. Jack Dempsey, Roy Dean’s father, grew crops and raised cattle and hogs, and to get a little extra cash, he sold timber. On one particular occasion, Jack saved his timber money with an idea to help make his family’s life a little easier on the farm. At that time, the Lefler Chevrolet deal-

a brand new 1949 one-ton truck. It was a basic truck with a small cab on a chassis with no bed. The truck had a six-cylinder motor and a manual transmission. It was every farmer's dream, and with a wooden bed built on the back, it could haul anything from farming equipment to hogs. Jack paid for the truck in full with a check for $1,300. It was the first new truck Mr. Dempsey ever bought, and it had been a long time since he had driven. Knowing this, Mr. Lefler asked him who was going to drive the truck home and then suggested that Roy Dean get behind the wheel. Mr. Dempsey looked at his young,

Jackie Whillock By Clell Lewis Jackie

Jackie Franklin Whillock was born on November 4, 1942, in Clinton, Arkansas. His name will be very familiar to many of you who have grown up in Clinton. Jackie was probably the best allaround athlete who ever attended Clinton Schools. Jackie was all-state in basketball and was offered scholarships to play football, basketball, and baseball when he graduated from Clinton High School in 1960. Upon graduation from high school, the St. Louis Cardinals invited Jackie and his parents to St. Louis, where they met Stan (the man) Musial himself. However, because Jackie was so young,

and his parents decided it would be best to accept a baseball scholarship to pitch for the Razorbacks. While Jackie was in college, he became good friends with Jerry Jones, now the Dallas Cowboys owner. When Jerry Jones got married, he asked Jackie to take part in the wedding. After Jackie graduated from college, he received an offer from the Detroit Tigers, which he couldn't refuse, and signed with them. Jackie pitched briefly in the major leagues. Though his time in the major leagues was short, his minor league career lasted eleven seasons, from 1964 to 1974. In the minor leagues, he spent time as a player

the boy when he said with confidence, “Roy Dean has never driven before, but he catches on to things pretty fast. He'll drive it home." Mr. Lefler offered one of his men to ride along, and Roy Dean had his first driving lesson. They drove south to Choctaw and turned east toward home. They traveled along the bouncy dirt road as Roy Dean navigated a truck without power steering with one hand while shifting gears with the other as his left foot squeezed the clutch. The young lad learned quickly and was ready for the family’s weekly drive to town. The country folk came to Clinton on Saturdays, and the Dempsey's were exand as a manager for Detroit's minor league teams. Throughout his minor league career, Whillock went 63-76 with a 3.46 ERA, appearing in 391 games and starting 97 of them. While participating in the State High School baseball tournament in Ft. Smith in 1960, a batter was leaning way over home plate, and when Jackie threw a strike, the ball hit the batter in the side of his head, and the batter died in just a few hours. Many people believe this incident is why Jackie tended to walk several batters. When a batter leaned over the plate, Jackie would 'walk' him rather than throw strikes. Today, Clinton native Jackie Whillock lives in Dallas, Texas.

in their new vehicle. As they drove along the dirt road, neighbors ran out of their houses and waved at them. Some of them wanted a ride. One by one, they hopped on the chassis. There were about a dozen people balancing on the back with their legs hanging off the side. Jack kept reminding them, “Folks, you might want to hang on, Ole Dean hasn't been driving very long.” Roy Dean Dempsey drove for a year until he was old enough to get his license. Looking back on those days he says, "You just did whatever you needed to do back then. You didn't think about not being able to do it. It was just a matter of doing it."

I was at the Clinton Senior’s Center last year hanging fliers for my blues band when I heard a song. I followed the sound to the other side of the room. “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd is a complex song to play, and a man using an old upright piano was performing it beautifully. That was the day I met Russell “Rusty” Allgaier. Rusty was originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, and raised in a family of talented musicians. He started piano lessons by the age of four. By twelve years old, he had mastered complicated classical pieces such as “Coaxing the Piano”. Rusty has written many musical compositions in New Age, country, and rock. His recordings can be heard on SoundCloud, an online music sharing website. Although Rusty has found success as a songwriter and pianist, his one desire was to play the organ for a professional baseball team. Although this dream did not come to fruition, he did have the privilege to play for a minor hockey team, the Kalamazoo Wings, from 1974-1984. Rusty married the love of his life, Marge Musgrove, in 1981. He remembers the date well. The Dodgers won

games to two against the New York Yankees! Fortunately for Rusty, his memory is photographic. Remembering events, times, and places is not a problem for him and was certainly beneficial during their 32 years of marriage. Sadly, Marge passed away in 2014 due to a cardiac arrest. For Rusty, living without Marge was not the biggest challenge he faced. He has faced challenges all his life. Rusty was born blind. Marge was his eyes, and she navigated him through this world. Without her, life was different. In 2018, Rusty moved to Clinton, Arkansas, into the Lefler Estate Apartments. Although he was alone, he would not be lonely for long. His positive attitude brought new people into his life. Because of his new friends, his apartment consisting of a single chair, table, and mattress became fully furnished. He is a member of the Clinton Church of Christ, and he can often be found at the Senior’s Center playing piano for an eager audience. Additionally, I am proud to say my band Breez has a new member! His playing enhances our band tremendously, and we are fortunate to have an exceptionally talented artist living in Van Buren County!

Greers Ferry Lake

As of Thursday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 459.17 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 462.04 feet msl). (updated 12-172020) Tommy Cauley of Fishfinder Guide Service (501-940-1318) said the water level at Greers Ferry Lake is at 459.16 feet msl and staying pretty steady with no rain and warmer temps not much generation. It looks like the trend will continue until the first of the new year, as forecasts calls. It is 2.88 feet below normal pool of 462.04 feet msl. Black bass will eat crankbaits and spinnerbaits on steeper banks, along with jerkbaits, drop-shots, jigs, Alabama rigs and spoons working for deeper fish and dragging a C-rig or football head. Crappie are eating minnows and jigs fished straight up and down, as fish are getting tighter to pole timber and brushpiles. Some bream are still pretty active in deeper water; try 12-20 feet

with crawlers and moving baits. No reports on catfish. The river spawning walleye have got it on their minds and are staging and/or moving, while the lake fish are wanting to eat. Best bet is a crankbait trolled in right areas, 12-40 feet. Hybrid and white basses, will eat a lot right now, feeding up before the harsh cold; try spoons, Alabama rigs, hair jigs, inline spinners and the Largo Super Spinners in 35-80 feet.

Little Red River

(updated 12-172020) Greg Seaton of littleredflyfishingtrips. com (501-690-9166) said the Army Corps of Engineers have generated from the dam each day this week. Amounts have varied and so has the time. Check each day before planning your trip. This generation is probably due to the colder temperatures and demand for electricity. This may be reduced later in the week and over the weekend due to a warmer weather pattern. The river is clear. Rainbows and browns are still taking egg patterns and small midge

pupa. It is that time of the year when you should be careful wading the shoals where the browns are trying to spawn. A redd is an area on the bottom of the river in the gravel where the fish have cleaned the debris from the rocks and lay their eggs in the gravel. These areas are easily identified by being cleaner and shining on the bottom. Please avoid wading through these areas. Disturbing the eggs destroys them and therefore reduces the number of browns in the river. Wade around, not through, the redds. The browns are not stocked in the Little Red River and depend on this spawn to survive. Also, please try fishing below the redds to catch the fish that are feeding on the eggs drifting off the redd. Avoid harassing the fish that are on the redds spawning. These fish will probably be caught by foul hooking rather than taking the fly. “Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!”

12 Months of Gardening by Jeffry Burgess no, chives, parsley and tainers are also avail-

Now that I have fully committed to winter gardening, I marvel that I did not start sooner. My friend and fellow organic gardener, Lalla Ostergren, use to say, “There is no month not good for gardening.” I did not really believe her until I took over the care of her garden when she became infirm. Later, from her hospice bed at home, she would advise me on what and when to do this and that. She wanted to be sure I was taking care of “her” garden properly. Her enthusiasm persisted almost to her last day. So when a recent colder than expected overnight killed my uncovered lettuce, I asked myself, “What would Lalla do now?” The answer came quickly, plant more seed indoors. Which brings us to our focus in this month’s column. In spite of the immense joy I get from raising fresh organic produce with my own hands in the winter, I have discovered winter gardeners are a hearty few. So most of this column will be devoted to what fair weather gardeners and nongardeners can grow indoors that will contribute to their health and well being. First, remember plants add oxygen to the air and pull carbon dioxide out. Some will scrub pollutants from our indoor air. Thus we benefit from the presence of plants in our homes before we eat them for their nutritional value. Many of the mental health benefits of outdoor gardening transfer to growing indoors. Being responsible for plants helps us connect to the nature world. It helps us develop a growth mindset that realizes learning can be constant. It helps us to practice acceptance and moves us away from perfectionism. This all in turn helps reduce the stress levels in our lives that can contribute to disease. There are four levels of growing indoors that are easy for most, but let’s start with the most difficult, full size plants. Presently, I have several tomato and pepper plants in my greenhouse. They do not produce as much there as I would like but when the weather warms they will be productive sooner than others. You can do this with a relatively small lean to greenhouse against your home, or a window box. Other produce can be grown in these also. A more doable and less expensive approach is the kitchen windowsill of herbs. Kits are available online for less than thirty dollars. Make sure you only get the herbs you are going to use. To keep these plants from overwhelming their space, pick and use regularly. Choices that do well on windowsills include: mint, rosemary, basil, cilantro, orega-

thyme. Lalla had extra wide window sills installed on all her south facing windows because she grew more than herbs indoors, including baby greens. When my lettuce froze recently, I immediately started lettuce seed on a windowsill indoors. Typically you can expect eatable baby leaves in as little as two to three weeks. I will go a bit longer with the lettuce since it is primarily intended to go on sandwiches and in wraps. Since baby greens are more tender and automatically bite-size, they go well in salads. As with full grown plants, supplemental lighting in the winter maximizes growth. Some good choices are spinach, kale, arugula, romaine, garden cress, Swiss chard, endive, radicchio, and a whole host of oriental greens. Pick the lower leaves and let the growing tip produce more. I dig carrots and Jerusalem artichokes from the garden, thin slice and add for a delicious and nutritious salad. Next on our list for the indoor garden are microgreens, which can be ready to eat in as little as seven to ten days. Kits are available online for under twenty dollars, but depending on what seed is used and equipment, they can cost much more. Common choices include: amaranth, sunflower, wheatgrass, mustard, radish, basil, cress, cilantro, beet, cabbage, mizuna, pac choi and broccoli, to name a few. I have always used potting soil as my growing medium, but other choices are available, including hydroponics. I place about an inch of potting soil in my containers, sprinkle the seeds and cover with a thin layer of more soil. Moisture and warmth are needed for the seeds to sprout. Check daily and mist if soil appears dry until they sprout(3-8 days). At least four hours of sunlight is needed. If they start to look pale and spindly, they are not getting enough light. Artificial light can help. Harvest after the first true leaves form. Most snip them off at the soil line, but Lalla would wash the soil off the roots and eat those too. Some seeds will regrow, like peas, if you snip above the “seed leaves”, or cotyledons. Microgreens go well on sandwiches, in salads and stir fry. A mistake I made early on was planting different seeds in the same grow tray. If one germinates in three days and the other in eight days, they won’t be ready to harvest at the same time, which makes it difficult. Now I plant one kind of seed per grow container. The last item on the indoor garden list is sprouts, which can be ready to eat in as little as two to four days. Lalla used glass canning jars with different lids for different size seed. Sprouting con-

able for under fifteen dollars and up, and include instructions. With the jar method, fill with enough cool water to cover the seeds, drain and repeat several more times to rinse the seeds. Refill the jar halfway with cool water and let soak for eight to twelve hours at room temperature in a dark location. Then drain the seeds and rinse them thoroughly several times, twice a day, daily until sprouted. When the jar is about half full, put them in a sunny window to green up. I use a salad spinner for my final rinse and then store them in the refrigerator. This yields a lot of sprouts. Toss them into stews, soups or stir fries near the end of cooking. Some like them oven roasted until crisp and brown but I suspect that reduces their nutritional value. Seeds popular for sprouting, in addition to those mentioned for microgreens, include alfalfa, celery, chia, clover, fenugreek, red clover, mung bean, onion, pumpkin and sesame. Prices on different kinds of seeds can vary greatly. A word of warning, the moist, warm conditions required to grow sprouts are ideal for the rapid growth of bacteria. Steaming or boiling until tender solves any potential problem. So now we have a complete list of gardening indoors. Much of this is less labor intensive than an outdoor garden, so you will have plenty of time to plan for spring. Consider getting some graph paper and start a map of your garden. Draw in what you want to plant and where. Do some research on companion planting to find out which vegetables ben-

These beets in Crabtree are looking stressed with all the recent winter weather, but that’s no reason to give up on gardening when a warm indoor garden is awaiting. efit and protect each other. Do not plan a garden you won’t have the time and energy for. Be realistic. Next time we will look at more factors that go into planning a

new garden or improving an existing garden. Also we will take a look at what seeds should be started and when, in anticipation of planting out in early spring. In

the meantime give serious consideration to the joys and benefits of gardening indoors. We hope to see you in the garden next month.
