Ellis named new Zoning director Mayor Richard McCormac announced at Thursday’s meeting that he has chosen Phillip Ellis as the city’s new Zoning director. Ellis will replace Tim Clark who is leaving at the end of August after 18 months on the job. Ellis is a Clinton native and a

former banker. Also at Thursday’s City Council meeting, Richard Hink, Water Department manager, said there has been no movement on negotiations with the Dennard Water Association. Until a formal request is made, Clinton cannot even talk to Dennard about

a takeover, he said. It was announced at last month’s meeting that Dennard will shut down its operations and has made plans for another water company to take it over. Clinton Water is asking for a chance to consider taking it over instead. Hink also said

the department spent $28,000 to clean up sediment ponds after being written up by ADEQ. He said there is a pump malfunctioning in the lake. It is the same pump that cost $128,000 to repair in 2014, he said. And he asked the council to move $68,000 from the de-

Scam alert

A reader asks that we remind everyone to be wary of phone scams. One of the latest scams involves getting a victim to just say the word “yes” to a question such as, “Can you hear me?” If you receive a call that starts with this seemingly innocent question, hang up immediately, the Federal Communications Commission warns. Scammers are increasingly using this phrase to record the word “yes” from unsuspecting consumers. Later, the recording can be used as a voice signature to authorize charges on the victim’s utility or credit card account. If you have already responded to this type of call, review all of your statements for unauthorized charges.

Championship cloggers The Red River Cloggers from the Judi King School of Dance have just returned from Silver Dollar City in Branson where they have been performing for two weeks at the Boat-

ahead. The mayor said a special meeting will be called to address the Water Department, and a workshop will be called to work on plans for getting a quarter-cent sales tax approved by Clinton voters. No dates were announced at the meeting.

Solar eclipse

Coming Monday, Aug. 21 – a solar eclipse. In the 72031 zip code area, we will see a partial solar eclipse with peak time at 1:16:43 p.m. CDT when the moon obscures 91.5 percent of the sun, according to Vox.com. Remember, even on eclipse day, it’s not safe to stare directly into the sun without special viewing glasses. The next total solar eclipse visible to us will be in 2024. If you’re interested, there’s lots of neat eclipse stuff from NASA on the Internet.

5 charged after man found under bed What began as a shoplifting incident at Walmart led to the arrests of five people at a nearby hotel Thursday. The Walmart assistant manager told police the suspect fled toward the Super 8 motel after being confronted. As he fled, he left behind his old shoes and several Co2 cartridges in the parking lot, according to the report from the Clinton Police Department. At the hotel, police were told two rooms had been rented to Sheila Brown. A woman answering the door of Room 213 told police the only occupants of the

K. Harmon

room were herself, her father and her young son, according to the report. She allowed police to check the room. Finding nothing there, police turned to Room 214 and were told by Brown that only she and her husband, James Long, were in the room. Police found a plastic bag with pills, digital scales and rolling papers, the report states. Long said the

scales were his and that he used them to weigh food, the report states. He was placed under arrest and put in a patrol car. After finding a box for a Co2 powered pellet pistol in the trash in the breezeway, police returned to the rooms and asked Brown about her son, Keith Ring, according to the report. She stated he was not at the hotel,

the report says. The officer and a county deputy returned to Room 213 to search it again. Mitchell Harmon was lying on one of the beds with his grandson and was reluctant to get up, the report states. When he did, police found Keith Ring under the bed, according to the report. Also under the bed was a Co2 pistol and a chain saw, the report states.

Ring refused to come out and the deputy “dry stunned” Ring with his Taser, the report states. Ring, according to the report, threatened to shoot up the deputy’s house and said he should have shot them all. Ring, 24, of Clinton has been charged with four counts of felony terroristic threatening, child endangerment, resisting arrest and two counts of theft. Kayla Harmon, 30, of Scotland was charged with felony child endangerment, obstruction of government operation and hindering apprehension. Her father, Mitchell Harmon,

55, of Scotland was charged with hindering apprehension. The child was taken into child protective services custody. Brown, 48, of Morrilton was charged with obstruction of government operations. Long, 24, of Clinton was charged with possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of drug paraphernalia and obstruction of government operations. It was Long’s second trip to jail in a 48-hour period. On Aug. 8, Long was charged with battery in the third degree after an incident on Bobbitt’s Lane.

He coiled up in defense as I took photos but retreated to cover as I withdrew. I forget how big they can get until I run into one. Pool winners in Clinton last week were Bill Roberson and Gary Kirkendoll. Phillip Ellis has been doing a wonderful job as the VBCAP coordinator. Maybe we can convince him to stay. Please volunteer to help with the Cowboy Catfish Dinners Wednesday. Aug. 30-Saturday, Sept. 2. The four-day event is our big fundraiser for the program. It takes a lot of planning and help. We need folks to bring desserts all four nights. And if you could, we can also use your help serving. It gets pretty hectic sometimes. We need all the help we can get. We have special music every night so it is fun to just come and enjoy. See you there, hopefully. School starts this week, so if you are driving please be careful. Don’t pass stopped school buses. And watch for children walking. If you have something you want me to write about, let me know. See you at the centers to eat. Good idea. You don’t have to cook!

Letter to Editor

To the Honorable Justices of the Peace: I strongly urge: Act to prohibit “Medical Marijuana Facilities/ Dispensaries” in Van Buren County. For some unknown reason, the Arkansas MM Commission has imposed a very short deadline. You must decide at the August 17 meeting whether or not our county makes application. The deadline rules out appropriate public comment/ hearings on this important issue. Why? The Federal government has not approved “medical” marijuana, in spite of Arkansas’ 2016 favorable vote. According to the FDA, no research studies yet prove marijuana plant benefits. While extracts may help some; other studies demonstrate the risks to health and social aspects of the plant. This is not my opinion; go to the FDA web site for more information. One of the talking points is medical mari-

juana facilities/dispensaries further “economic development.” Listen: “Some county is going to get the money. Let’s make it Van Buren!” I am 80-year-old-skeptical: Too many times I have heard about general public benefits; only to find a tiny few have the advantage. For our community betterment, I encourage you to continue your pursuit of development of our lakes and streams, wholesome adventure activities and family-oriented goodness. We need not refocus our efforts on something yet questionable as marijuana farming and dispensing. The Van Buren County Extension office will be offering training sessions to become a Master Gardener. The Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service is an equal opportunity/equal access/affirmative action institution. If you require a reasonable accommodation to participate or need materials in another format, please contact your County Extension office (or other appropriate office) as soon as possible. You receive 40 hours of training for a fee and then in return

The training sessions will be held on Wednesdays, October 18 and 25 and November 1, 8, and 15. To be certified as a Master Gardener you must attend all five sessions. The program will be from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. The program will contain sessions taught by State Extension Horticulture specialists and other horticulture experts. You will not be disappointed and will be getting a lot of educational information during this program. The training format will be different this year though. The

classes will be conducted over the internet using Zoom conferencing at one location in the county. Our location right now is planned to be at the Van Buren County Library in Clinton. Beyond the training session, you will have the opportunity to work with some great volunteers and continue to gain knowledge in horticulture. Marine Sergeant Marshall Kennedy was on his fourth deployment when he lost both of his legs and sustained severe damage to his left arm after stepping on an improvised explosive device in Sangin, Afghanistan on June 13, 2011. Patriot Kennedy was the Squad Leader on a routine clearance mission and his team was informed by Afghan locals that a weapons cache was in a compound nearby. His left foot hit the pressure plate of an IED. Thrown through the air and into a nearby wall, Kennedy remained conscious throughout the ordeal. Kennedy, 32, of Farmington received a hero's welcome at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock on Saturday when the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a service organization for combat-wounded veterans, presented him a specially equipped Ford Raptor truck. It's the second year the national organization has presented a Purple Heart recipient with the modified purple truck, and the first year an Arkansan

was selected. Kennedy is a Patriot of Chapter 460 (Parson/Rogers), Fayetteville, Arkansas and has served as a motivational speaker at several veterans/ civic events in Northwest Arkansas. Arkansas loses a favorite son

Glen Campbell passed away last week at the age of 81. (Photo from Wikipedia)

"Gentle On My Mind" came out when I was a junior in high school. I remember thinking, "Now that's a neat song!" I loved the rhythm, and the way the guitar and banjo complemented the lyrics. The solidity of Glen Campbell's songs as a fusion of country and rock/pop just gained momentum as they came out one by one. "By the Time I get to Phoenix" was another big hit; and back in the days when AM radio played practically all genres of music on one station, it was the best venue for listening to all sorts of great crossover, innovative and versatile music. Today with FM stations specializing in specific genres, it is getting more difficult to discover the fusion and crossover musical talent that Glen Campbell and many others introduced regularly to the listening audience. Glen Travis Campbell was born in Billstown, a tiny community near Delight in Pike County, Arkansas, on April 22, 1936. He was the seventh of 12 children to be born to John Wesley (a sharecropper of Scottish ancestry) and Carrie Dell (Stone) Campbell. The

family lived on a farm where they barely got by, and to supplement income, the family picked cotton for more successful farmers. "I picked cotton for $1.25 a hundred pounds," said Campbell. "If you worked your tail off, you could pick 80 or 90 pounds a day." Glen started playing guitar at age 4 after his uncle Boo gave him a Sears-bought five-dollar guitar as a gift, with his uncle teaching him the basics of how to play. Most of the family was musical, he said. "Back home, everybody plays and sings." In 1954, at age 17, Campbell moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to join his uncle's band, known as Dick Bills and the Sandia Mountain Boys. He also appeared there on his uncle's radio show and on K Circle B Time, the local children's program on KOB television. It was there that he met his first wife, Diane Kirk, whom he married when he was 17 and she was 16. (He would marry four times in his life and father eight children.) In 1958, Campbell formed his own band, the Western Wranglers. In 1960, Campbell moved to Los Angeles to become a session musician. That October, he joined the Champs. By January 1961, Glen had found a daytime job at publishing company – American Music, writing songs and recording demos. Because of these demos, Campbell soon was in demand as a session musician and became part of a group of studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew.

Campbell played on recordings by Bobby Darin, Ricky Nelson, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, the Monkees, Nancy Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Jan and Dean, Frank Sinatra, Ronnie Dove, Phil Spector and Elvis Presley. He befriended Presley when he helped record the soundtrack for “Viva Las Vegas” in 1964. He later said, "Elvis and I were brought up the same humble way – picking cotton and looking at the north end of a south-bound mule." Later on Campbell would co-star in and sang the title song to the movie “True Grit” with John Wayne. He took CMA's top award as 1968 Entertainer of the Year and owns trophies for Male Vocalist of the Year as well. In 1962, Campbell signed with Capitol Records. After minor initial success with "Too Late to Worry, Too Blue to Cry," his first single for the label and "Kentucky Means Paradise," released by the Green River Boys featuring Glen Campbell, a string of unsuccessful singles and albums followed. From December 1964 to early March 1965, Campbell was a touring member of the Beach Boys, filling in for Brian Wilson, playing bass guitar and singing falsetto harmonies. Glen Campbell's hits include his recordings of John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind"; Johnny Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," Wichita Lineman" and Galveston"; Larry Weiss's "Rhinestone Cowboy"; and Allen Toussaint's "Southern Nights."

After he hosted a 1968 summer replacement for television's “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour/Variety Show,” Campbell hosted his own weekly variety show, “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour,” from January 1969 through June 1972. The show's comedy writers included Steve Martin and Rob Reiner. At the height of his popularity, a 1970 biography by Freda Kramer, “The Glen Campbell Story,” was published. Campbell hosted major names on his show, including the Beatles (on film), David Gates (Bread), The Monkees, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller and Mel Tillis. Campbell helped launch the careers of Anne Murray and Jerry Reed, who were regulars on his "Goodtime Hour" program. In the 1970's, Campbell had more hits with "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights" – both U.S. No. 1 hits. "Rhinestone Cowboy" was Campbell's largest-selling single and one of his bestknown recordings, initially with over 2 million copies sold. The main phrase of Rhinestone Cowboy was included in Dickie Goodman's Jaws movie parody song "Mr. Jaws." Campbell also made a techo/pop version of the song in 2002 with UK artists

August 15, 2017 Rikki & Daz that went to the Top 10 in the UK with the dance version and related music video. "Southern Nights" by Allen Toussaint, his other No. 1 pop-rockcountry crossover hit, was generated with the help of Jimmy Webb and Jerry Reed, who inspired the famous guitar lick introduction to the song, which was the mostplayed jukebox number of 1977. Between 1980 and 2011 Campbell made a cameo appearance in the 1980 Clint Eastwood movie "Any Which Way You Can," for which he recorded the title song. In 1991, he provided the voice of the Elvis Presley sound-alike Chanticleer in the Don Bluth film “Rock-a-Doodle.” Campbell ranked 29th on CMT's 40 Greatest Men of Country Music in 2003. He is also credited with giving Alan Jackson his first big break. Campbell met Jackson's wife (a flight attendant with Piedmont Airlines) at Atlanta Airport and gave her his publishing manager's business card. Jackson went to work for Campbell's music publishing business in the early 1990s and later had many of his hit songs published in part by Campbell's company, Seventh Son Music. Campbell also served as an inspiration to Keith Urban, who cites Campbell as a strong influence on his performing career. In 2005, Camp-

bell was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. It was announced in April 2008 that Campbell was returning to his signature label, Capitol, to release his new album, “Meet Glen Campbell.” In March 2010, a then-farewell album titled “Ghost on the Canvas” was announced which served as a companion to “Meet Glen Campbell.” In June 2011, Campbell announced he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease six months earlier. According to his family, symptoms of the disease had been occurring for years, becoming increasingly evident as time progressed. Following his early 2011 Alzheimer's diagnosis, Campbell embarked on a final Goodbye Tour with three of his children joining him in his backup band. His final show was on November 30, 2012, in Napa, California. In April 2017, Campbell's final album, "Adios," was announced, featuring 12 songs from his final 2012-13 sessions. The album was released on June 9, 2017. Campbell died of Alzheimer's disease in Nashville, Tennessee on August 8, 2017, six years after his diagnosis. He was 81. He left his mark on the world of music and will be remembered by many friends and fans for the great songs and talent he produced.

Fishing Report

Walleye are biting well on Lake Ouachita a little later than usual.

Central Arkansas

Craig D. Campbell Lake Conway Reservoir

(updated 8-92017) Bates Field and Stream (501-4701846) said the water is stained and at a normal level Bream are in 2-5 feet of water and the bite is fair. Use redworms or crickets. Crappie are fair. It’s best now to use small minnows or jigs. Bass reports have been good, with the best activity around lily pads. Bass are biting spinnerbaits, Flukes and jigs. Catfish are fair on nightcrawlers and also are biting dough bait.

Little Red River

(updated 8-92017) Lowell Myers of Sore Lip’em All Guide Service said the Little Red is receiving around 4-6 hours of generation on weekdays and lesser amounts on weekends. Midges, soft hackles and sowbugs, along with Wooly Buggers, are working well for fly anglers. White-colored Trout Magnets are recommended for spin fish-

ing. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501-362-5150) for Greers Ferry Dam water release information.

Greers Ferry Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 461.67 feet msl (normal conservation pool – 462.04 msl Oct. 1-April 30; 463.04 msl May 1-June 1; 462.54 msl June 1-Sept. 30). (updated 8-92017) Tommy Cauley of Fishfinder Guide Service (501-940-1318) said the water level at Greers Ferry Lake on Tuesday was at 461.79 and falling with generation and evaporation. It will continue to fall on through the fall of the year for electricity needs as they come. The bass fishing is good with some schooling fish and the rest of the structure and shallow fish eating with the cooler water temps and cloud cover being present. For the shallow fish use topwater baits, spinner baits, small crankbaits,

jighead worms and jigs for the mid-range fish; for the deeper fish try Texas rigged worms, football heads, and C-rigs, as well as drop-shots and swimbaits. The bream are bedding; small crankbaits, in-line spinners and beetle spins are working as well as crickets and crawlers from shallow out to1826 feet. The crappie are floating around suspended following the bait fish and can be caught with jigs or minnows in 18-38 feet of water. No report on walleye. The catfish are still chewing good all over the lake on a variety of baits – whatever your choice is, they will eat it. The hybrid and white bass are still eating off and on all day and night and have moved a little more shallow and can be caught from 22-38 feet of water. With some schooling going on all over the lake, try spoons, topwater baits, in-line spinners, swimbaits and hair jigs, as well as Alabama rigs.

Harris Brake Lake

(updated 8-92017) Harris Brake Lake Resort (501-889-

2745) said that with clear water and the water at a normal level, the bream bite has been good to excellent during the past week. Bream are biting worms and crickets. Bass reports are good, with the bass biting spinnerbaits, crankbaits and hitting topwater lures. Catfishing is good with worms.

Lake Overcup

(updated 8-92017)Johnny “Catfish” Banks at Overcup Bait Shop and R.V. Park (501-354-9007) said water level is almost normal at 22 feet. Clarity is good, temperature is around 85 degrees. Bass are doing well with buzzbaits and plastic worms (black), around brush and around shad pools. Bream are doing well around the grass and banks, finally on their beds. Catfish are doing well on poles with nightcrawlers and bass minnows. Crappie are being caught in deeper water 9-11 feet using jigs and minnows. Most are 1012 inches long with good amounts being caught. Fishing is the best it has been in a while; come see us at Overcup Landing off Arkansas Highway 9.

Brewer Lake

(updated 8-92017)Larry Walters at Bones Bait Shop (501354-9900) said water is clear and the surface temperature is ranging 83-85 degrees. Water level is normal. Bream fishing has been fair to good the past week. Bream are around the

brush piles and are biting worms and crickets. Crappie also are fair to good. Crappie are in 10-15 feet of water and are biting minnows and jigs. Bass have been slow; reports are the bite is fair. Use spinnerbaits or crankbaits. Catfish are fair and the catfishing can be slow, but patience will be rewarded with a few. White bass reports ranged from poor to fair.

Lake Maumelle

(updated 8-92017) Vince Miller from Fish ’N’ Stuff (501-834-5733) said the water has a light stain to it and is at a normal level and current. Bream are in 3 feet of water and the bite is good. Use redworms and crickets. Crappie are fair. Bass are good. You’ll find the best bite around rock points and jetties. Use crankbaits, buzzbaits and shaky heads. Catfish reports were poor.

Arkansas River at Morrilton

(updated 8-92017) Charley’s Hidden Harbor at Oppelo (501-354-8080) said water levels are back up to normal. Catfishing is getting better. It's best to drift-fish for them. Use skapjack. Also very good fishing grass with shad. As for bream, we have a full moon, which pushed bream to the shallows. Use Rooster Tails or Mepps. Reports have been very good. Bass are very good and biting early on grass. Use Chatterbaits. Later in the day, work the wood and

jetties. Drum are excellent on jetties. Use crawfish-colored pigand-jigs. Kentucky bass are good. Use spinerbaits over the top of jetties. Crappie are around 10 feet where the jetty and backwater hit. Use jigs. Reports have been good. No report on stripers.

Peckerwood Lake

(updated 8-92017)Herman’s Landing (870-241-3731) said water is clear and at a normal level. Breamare good on worms and crickets. Bass are good and hitting spinnerbaits and topwater lures. Catfish are good on worms. Crappie reports were fair on minnows and jigs.

North Arkansas

White River

(updated 8-92017) Cotter Trout Dock (870-435-6525) says Cotter has seen consistently higher water levels from Bull Shoals Dam this week with little or no drop overnight. The food supply is plentiful for the trout so you need to find something to catch their attention. While this challenging water level might mean the possibility of a smaller fish count, it could also mean the best time to catch is that bigger rainbow or German brown trout you've been angling for. Early morning, is the best time to be on the river with crawdad tails or crawfish crankbaits.

Happy endings Thanks to our compassionate, wonderful Voice readers, the two old dogs both got new homes last week. Stepping up to take Geezer, the old beagle, home with them were Nick and Viola Scott of Dennard. Coming through for Tish was Otis Blair of Clinton. There were some joyful tears shed at the SNYP Arkansas shelter as Tish and Geezer were bid farewell to begin their final chapter with their new families. We do love happy endings!

Dinner set for retreat fundraiser There will be a pulled pork dinner to benefit Men’s Recovery Retreat at Mount Eagle Retreat Center on Aug. 26, 2017. The fundraiser, by donation, will be held at Clinton First United Methodist Church, 167 Joe Bowling Road, from 5-7 p.m. The retreat is planned for Sept. 1517, 2017, for those seeking a time of retreat and recovery.
