Police: Man used name of brother

The Clinton Police Department was preparing a warrant Friday to file charges against the real culprit in a burglary case. When Herschel Sean Bowman was arrested earlier this month, he told police he was Zachery Bowman, which is his brother’s name, according to Clinton police. Lt. Eric Koonce says the brothers are only a year apart in age and do look quite a bit alike. Sean Bowman is accused of taking part in two church burglaries last month. He faces a forgery charge and a commercial burglary charge, both are Class C felonies. He now will also face a charge of criminal impersonation, police say. The other man arrested in the church burglaries is Eric Edwards. In another felony case filed in Van Buren County, Valerie Flora Ross of Scotland has been charged with theft by receiving. According to the affidavit for arrest, Ross tried to sell two emeralds and one jewel identified as tanzinite for $3,000. Once the person who said they would buy the stones took possession and turned them over to the sheriff’s office, they were traced to Larry Cook, a shop owner in Alread. Paperwork showed the jewels were worth $12,000, the document states. Deputies went to the shop and found that a window had been broken. During an interview at the sheriff’s office, Ross told investigators she found the jewels in her son Eric Edwards’ backpack. Ross said she intended to trade the stones for a vehicle, according to the report. She has been charged with theft by receiving, a Class C felony.

Truck on fire on highway – Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, a tractor-trailer rig caught fire on Highway 65 just north of the Clinton city limits. The highway was shut down in both directions as fire trucks from Botkinburg and Clinton put out the blaze. A Hazmat team was called out because there was a diesel leak. No one was injured.

Medic One moving in Medic One will take over ambulance services in Van Buren County on Dec. 22, 2017. Seventeen members of the Ambulance Committee cast their votes Dec. 11 and Medic One came out on top with 9 votes; there were 7 votes for Southern Paramedic Services and 1 vote for Liberty ambulance out of Perry County. Committee Chairman Brian Tatum added Dr. Keith Cow-

ard, a vocal critic of Southern, to the board the night the vote was taken. Coward was among those voting for Medic One. The resolution creating the ambulance board calls for 14 members on the committee and expressly spells out who they should be. No one from the hospital and no medical doctors were among those. Both are now represented on the board. The requests

for bids sent out to the ambulance services were changed twice after the original mailing. The first change was from requiring three ALS ambulances to requiring only two. Tatum said seven of the companies that received requests said that number was unrealistic for such a small number of ambulance runs per year. He said the Health Department agreed with that assessment.

The Clinton City Council voted to give every full-time city employee a $150 Christmas bonus. Part-time employees will receive $75. The council is still working on its budget, which must be passed by Feb. 1, 2018. The council wants to give employees a raise. Mayor Richard McCormac had suggested 55 cents an hour to all, but some of the councilors wanted to give a 2.5 percent to 3 percent raise. They will go over their figures again this week before deciding. In the meantime, Water Department Manager Richard Hink said all of his employees will receive a pay increase. He asked the council to release $600,000 so that he can get started with the Poleyard project. He says the pump station there is showing “serious signs” of problems. The council approved releasing $60,000 for engineering studies, but not the whole amount. Hink also said the lake pump has been repaired and reinstalled and all three are in working condition now. Also at the meeting, McCormac announced that City Attorney Matt Gilmore

Meeting set about water Shirley is planning two Town Hall meetings to hear what water customers think about allowing Community Water to take over its water system. The meetings will be Jan. 9 and Jan. 11. Also at last week’s meeting, the City Council talked about the 2018 budget. Mayor Lisa Hackett asked what the council wants done in 2018 and whether it wants to spend money or leave the amounts in the projections as it. The budget was tabled until the January meeting. is stepping down and he praised the work he has done. Gilmore asked if he could speak and said he wanted folks to know it was not his choice to quit, that the city had decided to go a “different direction” for legal services. He said it had been a privilege and honor to serve the city. His replacement was not announced.

SCOTLAND

The James Frank Hawkins Story / Part 2 by Don Ramsey

At the age of 16, Frank Hawkins and his family had just moved to Scotland and had started getting the cotton gin ready for the Scotland cotton crop. Frank was able to attend Scotland School and was studying grammar, geography and history for the first time. Although he was 16 he still had to start with the small and younger children but he was a fast learner and soon excelled. In the summer of 1888 Fletcher Hawkins built the very first revolving cotton press ever to be built. But he never took out a patent and lost it. Fletcher Hawkins and family had built a saw mill and a grist mill in Scotland. Throughout the week, the sawmill operated Monday through Friday and Saturdays were set aside for grinding corn. People from Rex, Alread, Crowell Mountain and even the McCluran place that was Southwest of Brock creek, Wolverton Mountain and part of the Culpepper Mountain and Upper Point Remove would come to Scotland to have their corn ground by the Hawkins’ grist mill. When not working as the ox cart driver for the saw mill Frank had to walk wherever he went. Frank recalled walking 10 miles to stay the night over at his friend Hamilton Emerson’s house that was on Southfork Little Red River. About a month later there would be a heavy rainfall on the upper part of Southfork Little Red River and the Emerson farm was located on a narrow part of Southfork. The river flooded and drowned eight of the Emerson family. September 1889, Fletcher Hawkins bought a small parcel of land and started building a house where the Grover Hall filling station would later be built some years later. (Today the old Grover Hall Fill-

ing Station still stands at the intersection of Highway 95 and county road 389 at the foot of the hill before you start up the hill toward the old Scotland School.) Frank would get to attend school at Scotland where J. K. Joiner was over the small school. Otto C. Dunsworth and Andy S. Jones who were 15 to 18 months older than Frank and had about two and a half years more schooling were the first grade teachers and insisted that Frank start from the beginning of the books. O.C. Dunsworth told him, “Frank, you can start with them and go as far as you can.” When they reached the back of the books Frank was still with them. He had done three years in one. Frank used all the extra time he had and studied by lamp until midnight. Christmas of 1889 came and J.K. Joiner decided to move on to another school and Otto Dunsworth and Andy Jones took over. A professor named H.H. Allen, a teacher from Mississippi, was visiting Center Ridge and decided to make a visit to Scotland and see if he could make a deal with the School Board to take over the school and since teachers were scarce, he thought some students in the school might be able to make be able to take the teaching test and past and it would benefit the school tremendously. Frank, among some others, was able to take the test and passed. Frank made high enough grades that the County Examiner gave him a second grade teaching certificate, even though he had had about 28 months of school in 12 years’ time. Between teaching and still advancing his education Frank still had to do his chores at home that included milking, getting wood, feeding the cows, helping with the dishes and sweeping the floor and helping out at the gin and the saw mill and the grist mill.

PUBLIC NOTICE The City of Shirley will be holding two Town Hall Meetings to get residents input regarding the proposed sale of Shirley Waterworks System to Community Water System Tuesday January 9th at 12:00 noon and Thursday January 11th at 6:00 pm meetings will be at the Shirley Community Center

But even with all his duties he still was able to set aside book time and sometimes that meant reading and learning by the light of a cola oil lamp, but Frank was determined to have an education. In 1890, Professor Allen saw the need for a high school and he began to advocate a plan to get one. The townspeople and mill owners agreed that there should be an advanced learning for the children of the small community of Scotland. Doctor T. H. Jones donated a parcel of land on the hill for the school, townspeople got together with their saws and teams of mules and oxen and they went on the mountain north of Scotland and cut the timber and brought it to the mill for Fletcher Hawkins to mill. Fletcher Hawkins would take on the duty of building the new high school building and also building the Hawkins home on the parcel of land he had bought from Dr. T.H. Jones. Frank would teach school for two months at Sandy Gap, about one mile southwest of Rex. Helping at the at the mill and teaching and working on Saturdays with his father, Frank helped build the new school. In 1891, the new two-story building was built with the total cost of $365 and it would be called the Scotland Male and Female Academy. The timber and lumber business was slow so Fletcher Hawkins sold the saw rig to J.L. Moore and Charley Moss and they moved it to Piney, about 8 miles west of Scotland. M.B. Lefler would buy the cotton gin and the grist mill. The Hawkins family would provide room and board for a girl named Carie Thomas and she would attend the Scotland Male and Female Academy and she would help tutor Frank and help around the house as well. This allowed Frank to stay on top of his studies. The summer of 1891 Fletcher Haw-

kins sold the land where the Hawkins family was living and they put on hold the house they were building and Fletcher bought out Charley Moss and moved the saw mill west of Scotland and the family would have to move. Professor Allen knew that Frank was doing good teaching and going to school to further his education and ask if Fletcher would let Frank stay there in Scotland and he would find him room and board. With the family not having any money they had to trade out the room and board for lumber and Frank was able to attend school for 10 months that year. 1893 was a very hard year for the Hawkins family as that death would come to visit twice in a matter of months. 1893 would find Frank Hawkins as a 21-year-old man, and his mother was in poor health and spent most of her time in the bed the early part of the year. Fletcher and Frank and Jeppie had completed building the house they had started in 1891. Once a week Frank worked for the Lefler-Lindsey and Reynolds mills for $1 a day to buy winter clothes. Frank would haul lumber and cotton to the rail yard at Shirley and the rest of the week he would farm to raise a crop to help make the ends meet for the Hawkins family. April 9, 1893 Frank youngest brother Lee would pass away. August 3 of that same year Frank would marry Martha Bell Reynolds who would help take care of Frank’s mother until her death on December 9, 1893. Frank and Martha stayed with Frank’s father to help him raise a cotton crop in the year of 1894. In August 1894 Fletcher Hawkins would marry an old acquaintance by the name of Rebecca Ann Loyd. In 1895 Fletcher Hawkins and Jeppie would rent the gin and grist mill there in

Major Willie Ray was a retired circus act and cousin of Martha Hawkins. Scotland and run it until the dust became too much for Fletcher. Frank would take over his father’s part of the gin and mill. 1895 was a very busy year for Frank and he had very little spare time between ginning and baling 12 bales of cotton a day and working on Saturday at the grist mill. On Saturdays there would be people lining up a little after daylight and they would grind until sometimes 10 o’clock at night. Frank and Jeptha Bryant (Jeppie) Hawkins would be the ones operating the grist mill the fateful day of February 2, 1895 when William and Calvin Whitfield would come to town to have corn ground. That is the day that the wild razorback hog wandered into town and caused havoc and Calvin had tried to scare away the wild hog from some children playing in the street when the wild hog became excited and ran between Calvin’s legs and with a quick jerk of the hog’s head its tusk sliced through the artery of Calvin’s leg and he bleed to death there in the streets of Scotland. In 1897 Fletcher Hawkins moved to Texas to work. Frank and his young family stayed in Scotland and rented a house about 100 yards from Dr. Aaron Emmons and on March 24, 1897 Frank and his wife welcomed Minnie Leona Hawkins into this world. Frank would make a good crop of oats that year and sublet out his fields to make enough money to pay the rent on the house. In 1899 Frank and his family moved to the Green place to make a crop, but it wasn’t enough to provide for his family so he would go over to Copperas Gap in Perry Coun-

ty to haul cross ties at 3 cents a tie. Weighing only 125 pounds Frank would haul many cross ties that weighed more than he did, but he would earn enough money to be able to buy Martha’s sister’s (who had married a man by the last name of Maxwell) part of the old Bowden place that Mr. Reynolds had given Martha and her sister, and soon Frank moved his family there on the old Bowden place. Mr. Reynolds, who owned a drug store in Scotland, also let Frank have the loan note from a Mr. John Burns and in payment for cotton ginned Mr. Burns gave Frank a 21-year-old mule. Working the old mule Frank was able to cut and sell firewood at 75 cents a rick to pay off his note on the Bowden place. Cutting and selling wood and making a crop and teaching two months of summer school in Scotland School District, Frank and Martha were able to make the payments on their land; as they entered into 1901 all they had left to pay on the land was $55. But with prosperity there is some bad times and 1901 found Frank and Martha with high spirits but in January the Maxwell folks had come down with Typhoid fever and Frank went to help them out. It was a bad winter that year with lots of snow storms, and each day while going home from the Maxwells’ farm Frank had to brave the regular snow storms. January 12, 1901 Frank Hawkins came down with Typhoid fever and was in bed for two months before he was able to get out of bed. He would have to See Hawkins on page 6

Jeff Burgess Crabtree

Lots of folks up this way will be coming and going for family holiday events. And with winter weather predictions in the forecast travelers should be prepared and cautious. A few years back I’d pulled in at the Crabtree Cemetery to reconsider if I wanted to go to town on the first ice-covered 16 West of the season. Lane Jackson pulled in and wanted to know if I needed help. I told him my concerns. He took a long look at me, and then the road, and said, “Doesn’t seem to me the ice is any more slippery this year than last.” And with that he jumped in his truck and headed off to town. I laughed and headed to town myself. Have a safe and happy holiday season. Merry Christmas!

The very successful program where callers can let the community know what they have to sell, want to buy or trade has been a mainstay in the community for years. KHPQ is also well known for its "Hot Country" format. In November 1977, King built the radio station in Clinton; but had filed with the FCC for an application in 1976, nearly 18 months before it was approved. King has been at the helm since it began broadcasting on Nov. 16, 1977. As of this past Nov. 16, King has been broadcasting for 40 years. His was the first radio station in Van Buren county. When asked how he came to be involved in radio, King told me that the reason he got into radio was because he loved music so much. He became active working in radio while in high school. King worked part time at a radio station in Augusta, Arkansas and continued working there periodically while attending college at Arkansas State University, where he was taking a course in radio/television. King was born in Judsonia, a small community outside Searcy in 1953. King has not just

been a passive music lover, however. For his 12th birthday he got a set of drums and would soon hook up with a neighbor friend, Alan Yarbrough in the Searcy area, who played lead guitar. He was around 13 or 14 years old at that time. A cousin played bass and a neighbor girl was the singer. King’s music interest continued to grow through the course of his life as he maintained a good musical connection with Yarbrough (who would later do some successful work in Nashville with Cal Smith and also the Kendalls). King first went to Dogpatch USA in 1971, and later joined some other musicians (with Yarbrough) to become part of the Jubilation Revue Show in 1972 and 1973, playing at the "Kornvention Hall" at Dogpatch USA. One of the performers of that show, Adam Granger, has also been a part of the "Prairie Home Companion" live radio show that was quite popular back then. Another member who later found fame as a successful song-writer was Gary Harrison. who was at Dogpatch in 1972. When Harrison stopped playing at Dogpatch, he went to Nashville and played at Opryland. Harrison has written over 300 songs, including

"Hey Cinderella," "I Hate Everything" and "Strawberry Wine" and a variety of popular artists have performed his songs. The Jubilation Revue Show did music like "Hello Dolly" and "Sunrise Sunset," quite an array of show-tunes and other similar songs. King didn't perform in 1974 but went back to Dogpatch to perform in 1975, where he met his wife-tobe. Judi Clark was a tap dancer. She had plans to attend Memphis State before deciding to go to college in Harrison, Arkansas. Shortly after moving to Harrison, the couple tied the knot. Judi King has been quite successful since her tap dancing days with a dance instructing career spanning some 40 years. Her students have been part of the Macy's Parade in New York, traveled and performed on cruise ships and many other places. She currently teaches tap, jazz and clogging in Clinton and Heber Springs. While King was attending college, there were some stage-hands building a stage and mounting speakers for a big concert that would be performed later that night. The performers were Mac Davis and Looking Glass. As King sat on the front of the stage observing the workers putting things in

Sid King started his radio station in Clinton in 1977. place around him, a man walked up and asked if knew where the dressing rooms were. Everyone else was too busy to show him. King told the guy he believed he did and directed the man to the dressing room area. King thought the man looked familiar, and he asked if he was Mac Davis, to which the guy concurred. They had been talking about music, and King told him that he played drums. Davis invited him into the dressing room where they talked for about four hours, King recollected. At one point Davis asked him if he would pick up a snare drum and play along as he tried out some new songs. Then, just before the concert was about to start, Davis told King he could stand backstage while the concert was in progress to get a better perspective from the performer's angle. King recollected the spotlight almost hit him on several occasions as he stood backstage watching Mac Davis perform. Davis is also a great song-writer who wrote "In the Ghetto" for El-

vis, "Memories," and "Daddy Don't Cry" plus other hit songs. One quite famous musician resident who once had a horse ranch in Fox, Arkansas, is Tony Joe White. Born in Oak Grove, Louisiana, in 1943, the American singer/songwriter and guitarist once did an interview with King on his radio station in Clinton. White is probably best known for his 1969 hit "Polk Salad Annie." He also wrote "Rainy Night in Georgia," which was first made popular by Brook Benton in 1970. As for his favorite music, King replied "60's rock;" but he also said that "good music is good music regardless of what it is." His station 1110 AM - 94.7 Crusin' Oldies specializes in classic rock hits. KHPQ - 92.1 FM Hot Country focuses on country hits. King also maintains his very successful Trading Post program throughout the week. The talk turned to a radio station playing obscure music and deep cuts, and King said there was a radio station back in the 1960's that did

just that. KAAY 1090 out of Little Rock had a real strong signal back in the 1960's. KAAY's cult status was forged in the late 1960's, when, after 11 p.m., the station abandoned the Top 40 format for three hours of underground music with the program Beaker Street hosted by Clyde Clifford. Its night-time signal extended well beyond Little Rock and Arkansas, covering much of the Great Plains, North Central, and Mississippi Valley regions of the U.S., leading to its nickname "The Mighty Ten Ninety." KAAY was an inspiration to Cuban rock musicians and rock fans who tuned into Beaker Street late at night, keeping themselves informed about American music and underground music in the 1970's. It was a whole lot different for radio back then, Sid recollected. They had a general format they followed where they played new songs (but he was at liberty to pick them out at his discretion). They would play classic songs for a while in another segment. Then they would have a request line where callers would call in and request their favorite songs. King recalled that the list would fill several pages. Radio was more personal then when there were not so many stations flooding the market. His radio station is still a strong medium for music in our area, however, and KHPQ in Clinton is not only entertaining, but very informative locally. It is also quite beneficial for the listener if those who are involved in operating the radio station have a bit of musical background personally, which King has. With his history as a drummer, Sid King is able to see things from a performer's perspective as well as being a music enthusiast.

use crutches for four months as he worked around his farm. While he was in bed with Typhoid fever his brother Jeptha Bryant Hawkins passed away. Still living in Texas, Fletcher Hawkins wife was in bad health. So Fletcher rented out his place in Texas and turned his livestock out to free range and in March came back to Scotland thinking that the change might help his ailing wife’s health. Frank still not able to move around good yet and still on crutches wasn’t able to start a corn crop. So Fletcher started Frank’s crop for him. In April, Frank’s stepmother would pass away. Fletcher stayed in Scotland until June and then returned to Texas to work his farm. May 25, 1901 Frank and his wife welcomed their baby boy Frank Fletcher Hawkins into the world Doctors told Frank that he would never be able to do much anymore like he once did as that the Typhoid fever had taken a toll on his body. Frank let one of his neighbors have a horse and a plow if he would take care of his crop for him. Fletcher had sent word for Frank to rent out his land and fields and move to Texas where he could help Frank make crops and help his family. Frank soon started to make preparations to move to Paris, Texas. W.H. Jackson had some brothers-in-law by the last name of Hubbard that lived close by Frank and they were looking for a place to live and farm. Frank sold them his part of the crop and rented the land and house out and Frank and his wife and daughter and 3½-month-old son moved to Texas on September 4. Traveling through Oklahoma and on trails that were nothing more than Indian trails they were able to

move about 25 miles a day in the hot dry weather. While Frank and his family were moving to be with his father, Fletcher had sold the place in Paris, Texas and moved about 15 miles west out on the prairie and had rented a place. That summer Frank and Fletcher would get jobs working in the hay fields to cut the second cutting earning $2.50 a day plus hay to feed the livestock. 1902 was a hard year and in February Fletcher told Frank that they didn’t have enough feed for all the horses and he was going to take them over to a cousin’s and sell them over in Hunt County. Fletcher had a sister over in Montauge County, Texas that he hadn’t seen in a while and he would go visit her. When Fletcher returned home he would reunite with a woman named Harriett Plunkett who had recently became a widow. Harriett was a sister to Frank Hopkins who Fletcher had known back in Arkansas. Soon Fletcher and Harriett would marry. Harriett had seven children with five of them still at home and the youngest about 4 years old. Fletcher came in late one night driving a small team of mules but did not tell Frank and Martha that he had married until Martha and the kids had went to bed. Fletcher Hawkins would move over to his new wife’s farm, leaving Frank to farm the land that his father had rented. Not being able to work like he used to Frank was soon forced to hire out for other people working for $2.25 a day and for food for his livestock and family.

October 1902 J.W. Reynolds sent a proposition by means of letter to Frank saying he would sell Frank his drug store in Scotland. Frank went to work to start selling off his stuff and decided to sell his late cotton, oat, and corn crop to his neighbor Alvin Poole. Frank gave Fletcher a cow and a horse buggy and sold his wagon and team and his hog along with a cultivator and other items he didn’t want to take back to Scotland. October 30, 1902 Frank and his wife and children took a train from Paris, Texas to Morrilton, Arkansas. November 3, 1902 Frank took charge of the drug store business and on December 8, 1902 welcomed their third child Nettie Hester Hawkins. March 1903 a Woodmen of the World Camp 301 was organized in Scotland and Frank would be elected as the clerk. April 3 a tornado went through the south part of Scotland and wrecked several houses and caused lots of damage. January 1904 the town of Scotland would build a two-story building on the hill that would become the Methodist Church on the bottom part and on the top part would be the Woodmen of the World and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows hall above the church. (Today that building is still standing and later in the 1940’s the Odd Fellows would sell the top part to the Masons and it would be used for years for the Masonic lodge meetings.) In 1905 Frank would be able to sell See Hawkins on page 12

A Special Day Called Christmas by Freeda Baker Nichols

My mama stopped putting up a Christmas tree, after my daddy died. While three of her seven children lived on the west coast, the others resided near her in Clinton, Arkansas. But none of us went home anymore for the holidays. Each Christmas, she became the honored guest at my sister Emma’s place, where family members gathered for dinner and gift exchange to celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus. My family and I moved next door to Mama the summer my husband retired from the Air Force. That year, our teenage daughter decided Granny’s holiday was going to be different. Tracy wanted more than anything to put up a tree for her Granny Baker. “I’m sure Granny won’t hear of it,” I cautioned. “Her decorations have been stored away so long she probably doesn’t remember where they are. She’ll say ‘There’s no need for a tree. Christmas is just like any other day.’” Nonetheless, Tracy asked Granny if she could put up a tree for her. As predicted, Granny said, “There’s no need to. Christmas is no different from any other day.” She leaned back in her rocker and turned to stare out the window. No different from any other day? On Christmas mornings at our house, Tracy and her three sib-

lings laughed together as they opened gifts. Their laughter filled our house much the same as when they still believed in Santa. But Granny had no companion with whom to share joys or sorrows. No sound of laughter rang through her house to break the boredom of loneliness. She had only a Siamese cat who snoozed by the fireplace, most of the day curled like a ball of white fluff. “I’m going to get the tree anyway, Granny,” Tracy insisted. She went into the woods, clutching a handsaw. When she returned with a small bushy cedar, Granny still sat in her rocker. She watched, disinterested, as Tracy secured the tree onto a stand and placed it on the floor. The cone-shaped cedar’s sharp-pointed top stood well above the windowsill. It could be seen from outside by people passing by on the highway. Tracy smiled. From a box of decorations, she picked up silver tinsel and draped it over the sticky green branches. Then she hung the smooth blue bells onto a few limbs. She clipped the foil star to the top but still the tree lacked something. “My mom gave me all the ornaments she could spare but there’s not enough,” Tracy explained. Granny got up and left the room. In a little while, she came back with a wrinkled brown paper bag tied with twine. The

smell of dust on the bag mingled with the tangy scent of freshcut cedar as Granny loosened the twine. Reaching into the bag, she brought out faded green and red paper cords she called “roping”. Folded paper bells, a paper chain, and fragile ornaments wrapped in tissue paper slipped out also. She handed all of them to Tracy. Together she and Tracy finished decorating the tree. The glistening tinsel alongside the faded roping, the blue bells next to the red paper ones created a colorful, cozy glow. Granny smiled, her eyes shining almost as bright as the foil star atop the tree. The next week, something wonderful happened. Brightly wrapped gifts began to arrive. Packages flew in from far away and they drifted in from nearby. They came from Oregon and California. They appeared from up the street to the east, from over the road to the west, and from next door. Granny arranged each one in perfect order under her tree. The tree sparkled. On Christmas morning, she opened her presents, gently folding the wrapping paper into a neat stack. Her eyes shone and her smile widened more than ever. If possible, our family would make every day full of excitement and joy for Granny. Then her Christmases would really be “just like any other day” but ever more special!

Fishing Report er try C-rigs and football heads for the best bite out to 40 feet, as well as using a dropshot. The hybrids and white bass are eating it up on structure and some schooling is going on at various places all around the lake. Use spoons, inline spinners, hair jigs and swimbaits out to 4045 feet of water. No report on catfish. No report on bream.

Big trout are being caught in the Spring River in Northeast Arkansas

Central Arkansas

Craig D. Campbell Lake Conway Reservoir

(update 12-132017) Bates Field and Stream (501470-1846) reported the water is clear and the surface water is cold. Level is normal. Bream are good on redworms and crickets. Crappie fishing has tailed off. The reports this week were poor. Try minnows or jigs for best results. No reports on bass. Catfishing is fair.

Little Red River

(update 12-132017) Lowell Myers of Sore Lip’em All Guide Service said the Little Red continues to experience low water conditions most days due to the small amounts of water release from the Greers Ferry Dam. This pattern is creating good wading conditions. They are in the brown trout spawning season here on the Little Red River, so their browns are moving to their spawn-

Page 9A

ing areas on shoals. If you do wade in or pull a boat through the spawning areas, be careful where you walk and don’t walk or disturb the redds (spawning beds). Sowbugs, midges, soft hackles and Woolly Buggers are working well for fly anglers. Pink- and white-colored Trout Magnets are recommended for spin fishing. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501-3625150) for Greers Ferry Dam water release information.

Greers Ferry Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 456. 05 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 462.04 feet msl Oct. 1-April 30; 463.04 feet msl May 1-June 1; 462.54 feet msl June 1-Sept. 30). (update 12-132017) Tommy Cauley of Fishfinder Guide Service (501-9401318) said the water level at Greers Fer-

ry on Tuesday was at 456.09 feet msl. That is 5.95 feet below normal pool of 462.04 for this time of year. As we move closer to the new year all species will be slipping into deeper water. The crappie fishing will continue to be good until it gets super-cold. Try a jig or minnow, or try slow-rolling a Road Runner in 15-25 feet of water over brush piles or in the standing pole timber. The walleye are moving toward spawning sites. The lake walleye are hanging around under hybrids and whites eating leftover and the rest of the lake fish are kind of roaming on the flats looking for easy prey. Try dragging around a minnow on a jighead or fishing around some deep docks for the lake fish, or slow-trolling big crankbaits for the moving fish. The black bass are all over the place eating shallow and deep. Topwater, spinnerbaits, Rat-L-Traps, jigs, small crankbaits are good in shallow areas. Out deep-

Brewer Lake

(update 12-132017) Larry Walters at Bones Bait Shop (501-354-9900) said the lake is about 4½ inches below normal. Water is clear and the surface temperature is 54 degrees. Crappie are fair. Try the brush piles with minnows. Bass are good on jigs. No other reports.

Sunset Lake

(update 12-132017) Lisa’s Bait Shop (501-7786944) said a few catfish been hitting brooder minnows , bass minnows and chicken livers. A few fair-size crappie have been hitting on pink crappie minnows and also on Kalin's 2-inch grubs in Tennessee Shad color around the bridge, early in the mornings or 30 minutes right before dark. Bass having been hitting topwater baits and brooder and bass minnows . A few bream have been caught on crickets.

said we really need some rain; the river is very low. But the catfish at the spillway are doing pretty well on brooder minnows on rod and reel. On out in Tull on the river, Lisa said she had an angler do pretty well on the walleye using brooder minnows on the rod and reel as well. Bass too have been doing well on brooder minnows and also 4-inch lizards in the green pumpkin and watermelon candy colors. A few crappie been caught on No. 6 crappie minnows. No reports on bream. Lisa said some other hotspots were reported by a few of her customers brave enough to withstand the cold weather. Harris Brake has proved to do very well on big crappie with No. 4 crappie minnows . Lake Maumelle has also done well on big crappie off of the Bobby Garland 2-inch Slab Slayers in Mo Glo Ghost color. At Fourche Creek, crappie have been doing well on 2-inch blue/silver Kalin's Grub on a 1/8-ounce jighead with weed guards. Crappie are loving those pink crappie minnows over at Lake Ouachita. And they just heard Sundaymorning that several anglers have been doing well on the walleye on Ouachita using CC Spoons.

White River

(update 12-132017) John Ber-

ry of Berry Brothers Guide Service in Cotter (870-435-2169) said last weekend that during the previous week, that had just a trace or rain, cold temperatures and heavy winds (to include lake wind advisories). The lake level at Bull Shoals fell 0.4 feet to rest at 5.4 feet below seasonal power pool of 659 feet msl. This is 41.6 feet below the top of flood pool. Upstream, Table Rock dropped 0.5 feet to rest at 1.6 feet below seasonal power pool and 17.6 feet below the top of flood pool. Beaver Lake dropped 0.7 feet to rest at 3 feet below seasonal power pool and 12.6 feet below the top of flood pool. The White had significant wadable water with little or no generation. The hot spot shifted to Buffalo Shoals. The hot flies were olive Woolly Buggers (sizes 8, 10), Y2Ks (sizes 14, 12), prince nymphs (size 14), zebra midges (black with silver wire and silver bead or red with silver wire and silver bead sizes 16, 18), pheasant tails (size 14), ruby midges (size 18), root beer midges (size 18), pink and cerise San Juan worms (size 10), and sowbugs (size 16). Double-fly nymph rigs have been very effective (John’s current favorite is a size 10 Y2K with a size 14 ruby midge suspended below it). Use lead to get your flies down.

Geri’s Fit Tips Stay fit over holidays

Staying fit and healthy over Christmas may seem like an impossible task at first but trust me, you can do it. It’s important to realize that for most of us, it’s not just Christmas but the days that come before it and the leftover food, such as chocolate and candy that’s still around afterward that are the issues. Having a happy and healthy holiday season is not about denying yourself, but it’s not about going completely off the wagon either.

Here’s a few simple tips to help you make better choices and still enjoy yourself. Plan ahead, watch your portion sizes (more protein and vegetables on the plate), don't skip meals, don't arrive hungry (eat a healthy snack ahead of time), keep moving, and stay hydrated. A good rule of thumb for reducing damage to your healthy eating at Christmas is to be sure and drink plenty of water. I know you have all heard it a hundred times before, but it is of utmost importance. Adequate hydration will fill you up and prevent you from gorging. And last but not

least, relax and reset. Take time out to recover, you work hard all year and don’t want to enter January stressed from Christmas. Christmas can be stressful so be sure to set aside time to relax and do something that refreshes you. Take a long bath, enjoy a glass of wine, take a walk or a meet up with friends. And don’t forget, Christmas comes around only once a year so use it as a time to enjoy good food with great company and make lasting memories. Don’t let your healthy lifestyle stop you from enjoying yourself! Merry Christmas y’all! – Geri Cabana, RN

some of his land he had bought over the years and was able to pay off the remaining part of the note on the drug store. Later in 1905 Dr. Aaron Emmons would put in a drug store and it would take away some of Frank’s business. So Frank bought out a shoe and harness shop and to make up for the lost drug store business he would also make harness and mend shoes. February 15, 1905 Martha Hawkins would give birth to their fourth child Joseph Cullen Hawkins named after the Woodmen of the World founder. !907 Frank and Martha had their fifth child Sarah Lola Hawkins born on September 20 and soon after the birth of Sarah the Hawkins family would lose almost everything in a house fire. They were able to save some furniture. With seven mouths to feed and a house to build back Frank worked hard and didn’t give up or wilt under the burden, but rather worked harder than he ever thought he could. Working on the house in the daylight hours and by coal oil lamp at night he mended shoes and made tack and harness until they had the house framed in and could move in and still work on it. When not mending shoes and making harness and tack Martha and Frank would use the coal oil lamp to nail up the strips that went over the cracks and to put up the ceiling. Scotland being the caring community that

it has always been the townspeople took up a collection of $100 in cash and quilts. Mrs. Cealah Bradley Reynolds, Frank’s mother-in-law, passed away in September 1909 leaving Mr. Reynolds alone. His daughter Sarah and her husband J.H. Lindsey moved in to help Mr. Reynolds and soon would buy out Mr. Reynolds’ part of the mill and gin. Frank would write that Mr. Reynolds was never satisfied anymore but he kept the Post Office in Frank’s building and that during the winter the mail would show up after dark and Frank would have to put the mail up. By 1912 Frank had saved some money and had borrowed some money from a bank in Morrilton to buy the Hosea Meler place on Point Remove west of Scotland. Frank had traded notes and was able to get an old mule and started farming again. Martha would tend to the drug store, while Martha’s father would tend to the Post Office that was also in the drug store building. Dr. J.K. Hatchett also used the drug store as his office and he would look after the prescription part of the business while Frank farmed and still helped mend shoes and make tack and harness at night. Frank was able to pay off the loan from the bank in Morrilton and was able to buy 10 acres from J.D. Bost and all together he now owned 187½ acres. In 1913 the Bank of Scotland was organized and Frank took stock in it. J.H. Lindsey, Frank’s brotherin-law, was elected

cashier and had never had much training with books. So at night Frank would help J.H. with the books. Back then there wasn’t adding machines and all the book work had to be done by hand and was quite a job. By 1914 Frank’s sons were older and were able to help him after school to go and cut wood to sell and for the home use. In late October Mr. Reynolds passed away 1915 would be a good year for the Frank Hawkins family and they would welcome their sixth child Emma Leila to their family on March 30. Brown Shoe Company of Saint Louis was a popular brand of shoes back then and they had a spokesperson named Buster Brown. The original Buster Brown was really named Major Willie Ray who was a retired circus act and was a third cousin to Martha Hawkins. Willie Ray and his wife came to Scotland to visit the Hawkins family and he would sit and tell them all about his travels all over the world while he was with the circus. He would describe New York City, Philadelphia, Saint Louis, the World’s Fair, London England and Paris and many stories of his travels as the Hawkins children would gather around and hang on every word as Willie Ray told of the smells of the cities and described to them traveling in an automobile and by boat. What made it more interesting was that Willie was 31 inches tall and at birth he had weighed 10 pounds and at the age of 21 he weighed 32 pounds but told everyone that he weighed 50 pounds. Jim Hawkins, Frank and Martha’s oldest son started teaching first grade at the age of 16 at the Gridley School. Back then there wasn’t yet a vaccine for the measles and the people of Scotland were no exception to catching them. In 1918 there were 13 cases of the measles with Martha having caught the Red measles and so each of the Hawkins family children would catch the Red measles. When the Red measles had run its course, there would be an outbreak of the German measles. Some of the families in the town would have both kinds of measles in one household. It was a good time for the drug store business both for Frank Hawkins and for Dr. Emmons.
