Resolutions for hiring get OK

Line work – Clinton Water and Sewer and Phillips Construction of Fort Smith worked last week on sewer repairs in the North Side Shopping Center. Workers threaded 350 feet of new line through the old metal one that was corroding and crumbling. The work was completed Thursday, according to department Manager Richard Hink.

In a short Van Buren County Quorum Court meeting last week, a resolution was passed allowing the Clinton School District to hire a resource officer through the sheriff’s office. The school district will pay the officer’s salary, but the position will be certified through the sheriff’s office. The Clinton School District spent most of last year without a resource officer. Also at Thursday’s meeting, resolutions were approved to allow the sheriff’s office to hire two part-time deputies, a part-time and a full-time male jailer and a part-time and a full-time female jailer. Sheriff Scott Bradley said the jail had lost four employees and that the positions already existed.

Agency spokesman Bill Sadler said some of the injured were transported to hospitals by helicopter. Authorities closed eastbound lanes of the interstate after the crash, which occurred about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Faulkner County. According to the report, a 2004 Ford Taurus was being

A resolution also was passed to allow the road department to hire two workers after one quit and another transferred to the solid waste department. Because the county is under a hiring freeze, all departments are required to submit resolutions for approval to hire. Also at the meeting, County Judge Roger Hooper read a proclamation honoring Marine Corps Pfc. Larry R. Roberts who was killed during World War II. His remains recently were identified and returned home. Roberts was from Damascus and because it is unknown whether he lived in Van Buren or Faulkner county, both county judges read the proclamation, Hooper said.

A 2016 Toyota 4Runner driven by Hayden Knox, 24, of Bryant, Arkansas, struck the Taurus, the report states. Three passengers in the Taurus, Jessica Marie Johnson, 26, Victoria Jeanette Lindsey, 65, and an unidentified infant, all of Shirley, were killed. James & Joyce Burns Scotland

It has been a very busy week. Lots going on and many more things to come. On Thursday, June 15, Doyle and Mary Scroggins celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They had a great party at the Scotland Senior Center and if the count is right they had about 150 people attend. If you were not there you missed a very good time. The decorations were lovely and they were done by Doyle and Mary’s daughter Sherry and granddaughter Jill. The food was delicious and the tables were beautiful. They had friends come from all over Arkansas as well as Texas and Oklahoma. They were pleased to have so many friends come help them celebrate. Congratulations to both of you. We are going to Alread for breakfast on Saturday, June 17. This is a fundraiser for the huge fireworks show they put on each year for July 4. It is always a great success and they always have a huge crowd and such good food at the potluck. Those people know how to cook. Sam Black had a heart valve replaced and is home and doing well. He is out for breakfast early in the mornings. You cannot keep a good man down. My dad would say Sam has spunk. Don Ramsey had a heat stroke and had

to go to the hospital and then they found out he tick fever and several other things have appeared. He is gaining strength every day and will soon be out working in the garden. Lots of prayers have been said for this man and every one is appreciated. He is doing well and Miss Reba is right there to help him. Pauline Black is home from the hospital and recuperating well. Prayers for you Miss Pauline. Scotland is having another event on June 24. It will be a HillBilly Meal and the cost is only $8. Dinner starts at 5 p.m. at the Scotland School lunchroom. The proceeds go to the Scotland Light House for their retreat and concert fund, as well as their youth group. Ya'll come ’cause I am going to tell you the menu: smoked pork butt, baked chicken, deep fried corn on the cob and fried potatoes pinto beans, fresh squash, cornbread, yeast rolls, cobbler, tea, lemonade, coffee. Just plain ole home cookin’. You all come. St. Johns' Day will be held on June 23 a the the Masonic Lodge in Choctaw. Family and friends of the Masons are

welcome and invited to attend that night. Time is 6 p.m. Have a great week and if you have Scotland News call James Burns at 5923935 and he will get it in the paper.

Jeff Burgess Crabtree

Tuesdays are Nights of Prayer, 7-8 p.m., at the Crabtree Foursquare Church. All are welcomed. Also at the church, on Friday is the Senior Night Potluck, 5:30-7:30 p.m. This month's food theme is "grilling." At least 55 years of experience on earth qualifies you to attend. The church's Holiday Celebration Cookout is to be held on Sunday, July 2, at 5 p.m. Hot dogs and burgers provided. Bring sides and desserts. The community is invited. Gary Erby says his garden is doing very well and has become easier. He uses 50 half barrel tubs to get his crops

Mark Martin. Berry served three terms in the Arkansas General Assembly from 2003-2009 but wasn’t able to seek re-election at that time because of state term limit laws. District 68 consists of portions of Pope County and most of Van Buren County. Berry and his wife Mona are members of Dover Cumberland Presbyterian Church. They have four children and nine grandchildren. about two feet above ground level. "It's better on my back," he explained. Shawn Overbey told of seeing a brown mountain lion on 16 West a couple years ago. It was at 10:30 p.m. in September. That's the fifth person to tell me of a personal encounter out this way. It makes walks in the woods more exciting. Red raspberries have started producing as black raspberries have started to fade. And while two pickings in the huckleberry patch have produced a lot of fruit, an absence of self-restraint has resulted in none reaching home. If we get a little more rain there will be more. "Blooms of Note" going on now include: Butterfly weed, St. John's Wort, lavender, thyme, trumpet vine, elderberry, bee balm, butterfly bush and mimosa trees. This fall, he will be attending the Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was awarded two scholarships. Oklahoma last weekend. Her dad, Terry Hoyle, and his team took third place. Tara will be participating in National finals in July. She is looking forward to that. Tara is the granddaughter of Brian and Debbie Tatum and great-granddaughter of Anne Mann. I called Lorene Oliger, she seems to be doing pretty good. Vada Sigler had brought her some fresh green beans; she says they are delicious! Deniece Sikes has been busy working on her house. She’s been putting polyurethane on her bar, she says it is looking good and after three or four more coats, it will look really good! Marva and RG Ward attended the Ward Reunion at the Conway Human Development Center Pavilion in Conway. Marva says it is a really nice place to have a get-together. About 40 people attended and 19 of them were RG and Marva’s children and grandchildren. RG got a certificate for having the most family there. Condolences go out to the family of Ilene Allen, she passed away on Wednesday of last week. I know she will be greatly missed. I attended the Treece Reunion on Dodd Mountain last Saturday, there were lots of people there. Some of them I hadn’t seen in years and others I had never met, so that made it special. I love meet-

Kort Weaver ing new relatives! I went to the decoration at Shady Grove on Sunday and got to visit with several cousins there. I went by to visit Helen Isom, another cousin, and visited with her for a while. I enjoyed our visit very much. We’ve been working in the garden this week, I got my tomatoes in cages, my green beans staked and finally got my purple hull crowder peas planted. I was tilling my garden one day this week and when I shut the tiller off, a cow mooed behind me, about scared me to death. There were 10 cows in my field and about 75 feet from my garden. I got the BB gun and kept them herded away from it until their owners got here about an hour and a half later. He turned out to be the owner of Cadron Crest Orchard, and also has a car lot at Greenbrier, where we bought our truck about six months ago. A tree had fallen on the fence and broken it down, so I guess there was no help for that. I don’t like cows, I had to milk one too many times when I was a kid. The last time I milked her, she waited until the bucket was full and then took her foot and gave me a milk bath! JR and I went to the Senior Center in Clinton one day, we See Neighbors on page 3

My parents, Leonard and Wanda Holley, enjoyed the free fishing weekend. They had a fun-filled day fishing on the river but didn't catch much. That evening they came home and we enjoyed some family time fishing on our pond bank. I caught a 7 lb. carp out of our pond! They caught many catfish to my one. Cody Lasater’s son Kanin was accidentally shot with a .22 gun. The bullet went through his wrist into his leg. He was sent to Children's Hospital for surgery. All went well and is now home. Please keep him in your prayers for healing. The Highway 110 Volunteer Fire Department sold one of their trucks to be able to buy another one. Our boys have spent a little over a week at their grandparents. They finally came home Tuesday. We have sure missed them. When they got home we had a surprise waiting. A new swimming pool! We have spent everyday since then in it. I think it was a hit! I have been busy getting ready for Vacation Bible School

Pretty flowers just keep appearing at the Clinton Center from Anna Payne, Emily Johnson, Danna Lawrence and others I don’t know about. And we can’t forget the pool winners at the Clinton Center. This week’s winners were Gary Kirkendoll and Ralph Emerson. Bill Roberson is supplying me this information so no one will be left out! Michelle, at the Shirley Center, has been on vacation, so Angel and Amy have been filling in and cooking up some good stuff. Good job, girls. The Shirley Homecoming fundraiser was very well attended. Most of the food was donated and everyone pitched in and helped. Well, hot is here. Turn up the air and be comfortable. Hope all you dads had a good Father’s Day. I am sure your family appreciates you and all you do for them. So I am wishing you a late Father’s Day greeting. The ducks were drawn from a child’s swimming pool in front of the Shirley Centennial Museum. The Regatta is a featured attraction at the Shirley Homecoming festival. Approximately 265 colorful ducks floated in the pool waiting on Frankie Treece, one of the foundation trustees, and some young helpers to draw the lucky duck numbers. Some young helpers, parents, teachers and visitors anxiously waited for their number to be called. Greatly appreciated prizes totaling over $3,200 and numbering 50 (with each prize totaling at least $50) included services, products and entertainment donated by school-supporting businesses from the Greers Ferry Lake area (Fairfield Bay, Shirley and Clinton), around the state of Arkansas, and Branson, Missouri. A 50/50 benefit ticket sale will be held to help Randy, Tracy and their families in an effort to rebound from devastating medical issues. Randy Ego a much loved 65 year old businessman who has operated Clinton Independent Garage for over 25 years. Music Scene

Jeff Stansbery and cousin Terry play some music during a family gathering last week.

Jeff Stansbery

Food for the soul When talking with Sammy Collums a few weeks ago, he mentioned how music was good therapy, how escaping to his music room to play the keyboard or piano would give him an inner peace, and I had to agree with him. Whenever I'm stressed, uptight or out of sorts, music becomes the anecdote that seems to cure those woes – at least keep them in check. Many people have various hobbies or crafts that they go to in order to find some consolation from the rigorous routines that everyday life may throw at them. It may be crocheting, knitting, art, playing games, etc. Whatever the case may be, it's good to know we have an outlet that we can turn to for comfort and relief. This past week my parents and I had the privilege of visiting with my aunt and cousins in Missouri. My mother's sister, my Aunt Deanne and cousins Patty and Terry were gracious enough to have us as guests at Patty's beautiful home on the Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach, Missouri. We had a wonderful visit! Patty took us on an excursion of the lake on her boat and it was thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable. Back at her home, my cousin Terry and I played some music, and sang some of our songs. Terry is an excellent songwriter, and it was awesome to just relax and jam with him. He also plays guitar and flute and sings very well. Once again, I found it to be really good therapy as did Terry when we talked about it. Sometimes just the view of nature gives us the inspiration to play and sing amidst the beauty surrounding us. In the Huffpost, UK, there is an interesting article that gives a bit more insight as to just how much of an impact music has on people. "Music works for everyone," it states. "If you love music and you know music motivates you, you'll get along in life." Those were the words uttered by Martyn, a person who had been using music therapy as a way of alleviat-

ing anger that he was feeling inside. Music therapy has been consistently put forward by organizations such as Nordoff Robbins, to help those with a variety of disabilities and difficulties, including autism, dementia, neurological disorders and those suffering from drug and alcohol problems. International R&B artist Ne-yo talked about how he was a "pent up and aggravated kid" and how he used music to help "sooth the savage beast." Again, music was an outlet for his emotions and even writing lyrics, once he had written down what he wanted to say, he felt more relaxed; and that is what helped him to transform into the renowned artist he is today. "I don't think anyone of us could go without music for a lengthy period of time without feeling that something is missing," the article goes on to say. As UK rapper Sway said, "music is good for the soul, it's the sound waves, the vibrations, that arouse these feelings deep down, to help calm the nerves and ease the mind." Krash Williams of Westside Radio mentioned how he had worked with young offenders who had used lyrical writing as a kind of therapy and an out-

let for their frustrations and thinking about what they would do differently coming out of prison. When watching the movie "The Shawshank Redemption," you get the sense of the power of music when protagonist Andy Dufresne plays opera across the courtyard on loudspeaker. The prisoners' reactions to the soaring female soprano are priceless. It is to this effect that music has its foundations, a way in which the whole world, even those living in confinement, can feel liberated. It has the ability to bring down walls. The power of music to soothe tense situations medically has been professionally documented according to the American Psychological Association. Researchers are exploring how music therapy can improve health outcomes among a variety of patient populations, including premature infants and people with depression and Parkinson's disease. While music has long been recognized as an effective form of therapy to provide an outlet for emotions, the notion of using song, sound frequencies and rhythm to treat ailments is a relatively new domain, says psychologist Daniel J. Levitin, PhD, who studies the

neuroscience of music at McGill University in Montreal. A wealth of new studies is touting the benefits of music on mental and physical health. For example, in a meta-analysis of 400 studies, Levitin and his postgraduate research fellow, Mona Lisa Chanda, PhD, found that music improves the body's immune system function and reduces stress. Listening to music was also found to be more effective than prescription drugs in reducing anxiety before surgery. (Trends in Cognitive Sciences, April 2013). One recent study on the link between music and stress found that music can soothe pediatric emergency room patients. In the trial with 42 children ages 3 to 11, University of Alberta researchers found that patients who listened to relaxing music while getting an IV inserted reported significantly less pain, and some demonstrated significantly less distress, compared with patients who did not lis-

ten to music. So what do some of the more prominent people say regarding music? "Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul." - Angela Monet. "If the Lord provides the music for the world around to sing, my love will build a castle in the air." The Bee Gees. "Music is the shorthand of emotion." Leo Tolstoy. "Music is the universal language of mankind." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. "Music is the art which is most nigh to tears and memory." Oscar Wilde. "Music touches us emotionally, where words alone can't." - Johnny Depp. "I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things." - Tom Waits. "Music is the strongest form of magic." Marilyn Manson. "Music can change the world because it can change people." - Bono. "What we play is life." - Louis Armstrong. "To stop the flow of music would be like the stopping of

time itself, incredible and inconceivable." Aaron Copland. On Stephen Wood's blog about "Music for the Soul," there are some more classic quotes as well as this bit of musical insight in a section entitled "Cultural Connection to the love of music": "Throughout history, music has been embedded into human culture. From the Aborigines in Australia, the oldest continuous culture on the planet to contemporary society, music has been an integral part of people's lives across the world. It has the power to unite, to stimulate emotions, and to communicate. Music is an art form with an instinctive influence intrinsic to its creation. It stimulates our senses physically and nourishes our inherent need for experience. It touches us deep in our soul. Music is food for the soul.” In closing, I will leave you with this quote from William Shakespeare: "If music be the food of love, play on."

Fishing Report of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 469.42 feet msl (normal conservation pool – 462.04 msl Oct. 1-April 30; 463.04 msl May 1-June 1; 462.54 msl June 1-Sept. 30).

Harris Brake Lake

Central Arkansas

Craig D. Campbell Lake Conway Reservoir

(updated 6-142017) Bates Field and Stream (501-4701846) said the water is stained and surface temperature on Tuesday was 82 degrees. The water level is normal. The bream bite is excellent. Bream are all around the shoreline and the lily pads. Use worms or crickets. The crappie fishing was just fair in the past week. You’ll find them at about 8 feet under the Arkansas Highway 89 bridge. Use jigs. Bass reports were fair. Anglers were having most success using topwater lures and wacky worms. Catfishing ranged from fair to good. The fish are biting worms and cut bait.

Little Red River

(updated 6-142017) Lowell Myers of Sore Lip’em All Guide Service said the Little Red continues to receive 12 hours of daily generation. The generation pattern has changed just a little this week with water release starting

Page 9

midmorning instead of early morning. This pattern is providing excellent wading conditions for a few hours each day and excellent drift-fishing from a boat. With the water release of two full units of generation, the river will rise quickly. So, if wading, be observant of changing water levels and be aware of your surroundings for your safety. For fly-fishing, Lowell recommends sowbugs, midges, caddis pupa and streamers. Pink- and red-colored Trout Magnet bodies on chartreuse heads are recommended for spin fishing. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501-362-5150) for Greers Ferry Dam water release information or check the Corps of Engineers website (swl-wc.usace.army.mil) for real-time water release and the Southwestern Power Administration website (swpa. gov) to see forecasted generation schedule.

Greers Ferry Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps

(updated 6-142017) Harris Brake Lake Resort (501889-2745) said the past week has been a good one for anglers. The water is clear and maybe a little high, but that didn’t stop the fish from biting good to excellent. Bream reports were excellent on worms or crickets. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs. Bass anglers are having excellent success, from the looks of the stringers, but not much else was shared. Catfishing was excellent on trotlines.

Brewer Lake

(updated 6-142017) Larry Walters at Bones Bait Shop (501-354-9900) said that while his phone line had been down a couple of weeks, causing problems for anyone trying to call in to the shop, the fishing was doing really well. Crappie are good and can be found in 10-20 feet of water, are biting minnows and jigs. Some anglers are spider-rigging over the brush, some are fishing about 10 feet deep off drops, and some are fishing the bottom, all getting success. One group came in with 42 crappie, which he said were really nice ones. Bream are

good. Catfish are doing really well. The anglers catching catfish are using big bass minnows, or stink bait. Some are noodling with small shad. Some are catching them right off the bank with minnows, just maybe 15 yards from the shoreline. Bass fishing is just off and on, he said. Anglers can catch some off the points in about 18 foot of water, using a Texas rig, spinnerbaits, and bass are even hitting some minnows. Anglers going for crappie were catching bass with the minnow fishing. On a 1-5 scale, Larry gives the week at least a 4 if not a 5. The lake is at 331 feet msl, about 1 foot high. Though no measurement was taken the surface water temperature, he said, probably ranged about 74-75 degrees.

Sunset Lake

(updated 6-142017) Lisa’s Bait Shop (501-778-6944) said catfish have been biting fair on chicken livers, nightcrawlers and minnows. Bream fishing has been good with crickets and redworms. Catfish have been biting at night on minnows, goldfish and black salties. Bass have been biting early in the mornings and at night. Watermelon, watermelon/red and green pumpkin plastics in the mornings and black or purple at night have been working well. Crappie fishing has been fair for some fishing with No. 6 minnows. (updated 6-142017) Lisa’s Bait Shop (501-7786944) said customers have reported catching catfish and bream while fishing below the spillway. Worms, minnows and chicken livers are working for the catfish. Worms and crickets for the

bream. Some crappie are still being caught in the lake on size 6 minnows. Customers tell us they're catching them early and late, around cover in 4 to 8 feet of water. Bass fishing has been slow to fair with plastic worms and lizards, topwater baits early in the mornings, and black and blue jigs.

Arkansas River at Morrilton

(updated 6-142017) Charley’s Hidden Harbor at Oppelo (501-354-8080) said the river flows are dropping, and on Tuesday morning they were at 113,000 cfs. Catfish are moving to the backside of the jetties. Use shad and fish from the bank out. Reports were good on catfish. Bass results were good. They are shallow in the morning; Charley says to fish under an overhang, use Jitterbugs and then move to grassy spots and use chatterbaits. As the day goes by, fish the drops. Fish for bream behind the jetties and in the backwaters with crickets in 3-10 feet of water. Reports have been good on bream. There were no reports on crappie for the past week. White bass are schooling behind the jetties. Use shad or pearl crankbaits. White bass reports have been fair. Striper appear to be blow the power house. Use a wobble spoon.
