SWN files suit against county SWN Production Co. claims that Van Buren County has over valued its natural gas holdings, and is pursuing the case in Circuit Court. SWN is appealing a November finding by the County Court that left the natural gas sales price at $3.04 per mcf. The gas and oil company wants the price lowered to $1.80. Van Buren County Assessor Trina Jones says that is the price at which
SWN sells the natural gas to its sister company, which then resells it for more. Jones and County Judge Roger Hooper say if SWN wins the case or withholds its tax payments while the case works its way through the court system, it will cost Van Buren County government and schools hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sports, politics highlight county’s year has no paid employees and is now open to the public only on Fridays and Saturdays.
A lot of news was made in Van Buren County in 2017 from sports to politics to animals. Here, in no particular order, are some of the highlights.
Water
Sports
It was a good year for sports at the county’s schools. At Shirley, the Blue Devils senior boys basketball team made their small town proud with an appearance in the 2017 State 1A Championship game. The Blue Devils went down in defeat to Guy-Perkins by 10 points, but it was a great season for the team led by Coach Keith Brown. The Clinton Yellow Jackets senior football team’s season lasted through Thanksgiving. The team went undefeated through the season before losing in the third round of 3A State playoffs to the Junction City Dragons. Coach Chris Dufrene picked up his 100th victory during

In December, the Ambulance Committee decided it was
ready for a change and said good-bye to Southern Paramedic Services, which had served the county for about 10 years. Medic One was chosen for a five-year contract and began work in the county Dec. 22. It was reported at the Quorum Court meeting that 75 percent of the Southern employees will remain here, now working for Medic One. The decision to make
a change came just weeks after a controversy at a Clinton High School football game in which many believed a paramedic took too long to aid a player who was having an asthma attack.
Animals
In July, SNYP Arkansas took over the Van Buren County Animal Shelter. It has been a struggle for the non-profit organization, which now
Water has been a hot topic in 2017. Both the Shirley and Dennard water departments are looking for someone to take them over. No final decisions have been made, but it’s looking like Dennard will merge with the Clinton Water Department while Shirley may go with Community Water. And the Clinton Water Department has hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of projects for the new year. Stay tuned.
Weather
On March 1, furious winds whipped through the county. At least 95 homes were damaged or destroyed, mostly in Fairfield Bay. Damages were not enough for the county to be eligible for federal aid, only state aid.

Skeeter says spay and neuter
I’m baaack! I negotiated a deal with the powers that be here at the Voice and will return as a somewhat regular columnist. I’m not going to tell you what I get in return because cats don’t let, ah, secrets out of the bag. What I want to tell you this week is very serious: Spay and neuter, spay and neuter, spay and neuter! Miss Lori from SNYP Arkansas reports that she has recently taken in 10 dogs from an abandonment case, a separate intake the same day, then a couple of days later, eight dogs, four of them puppies, and a cat. She said all 20 animals were brought in by animal control officer Tim Pike. Miss Lori said she was waiting on three puppies from Clinton and one adult dog from Culpepper to arrive as well. “We are overrun,” she said. “Our intakes have to be in quarantine for 10 days to insure the new dogs do not have disease. Our quarantine area only has 14 kennels. We physically cannot take in any more dogs at this time.” Really, folks, it is time to take responsibility for your pets. For puppies and kittens, life at a shelter is no life at all.
but it won’t be every week. To fill that space, we have added a Sudoku puzzle. Numbers are not my thing, but I am told a lot of people like it. Let us know. We’ve also added Van Buren County Trivia on the puzzle page. We hope you enjoy it.

We need to honor James and Anna Payne for their dedication of service to the VBCAP. Ms. Anna has been working for 17 years and Mrs. James has been with us for 11 years. We are so blessed to have such dedicated employees. When you see them, tell them thanks. The program held its Christmas dinner at Reyes Restaurant. We enjoyed a good dinner and played some fun games. Debbie Winston won the reindeer race. Kelsey Appleby won the ornament contest. We all enjoyed the gift exchange. Several people have been sick with colds and the flu. Keep them in our prayers. Ms. Norma had surgery on her wrist. Gerald Harper has been in the hospital. We buried one of our clients, Bobby Doyne Ward. People need to be more caring about welcoming folks from other centers. We are all part of the VBCAP. We can choose to eat at any one of the centers. Please keep that in mind when you see visitors. Let us try to spread good communication instead of negativity. Just be nice. Wishing you all a happy health New Year!

The Good Samaritan or samurai? The funniest research test I have ever heard of was performed in an Ivy League School back in 1973. The study was done on a group of seminary students (future ministers). They were told, one at a time, that they had to go to a different building to give a lecture on the Good Samaritan and they had to hurry, they only had a few minutes. On
the way to the lecture hall they passed a guy lying on the ground who was moaning and coughing. Now, guess how many of those future pastors stopped to help the guy in need, while on their way to talk about a guy stopping to help a guy in need? Ten percent. Now, when they had a little more time, 40 percent stopped to help. Still not a
majority though. The interesting thing about the guy on the ground was that he was in an alley, and they had to jump over him to keep on their journey. I wonder what they would have done if the poor guy tried to stop them, would they be Samaritans or samurais? That’s an interesting coincidence, 10 percent stopped to do the right thing. I recall another story in the Bible in which Jesus healed a group of 10 lepers, only one came back to thank him. So, I suppose that is par for the course. If someone needs help, only 1 in 10 are willing, even among those who consider
themselves helpers. Which brings me to the point I want to make: As you grow older and frailer, you are going to need more help and there will not be many who will step up to the plate. What are your plans? Yes, it’s going to take some planning. You need to know where you are going to live, who is willing to help you, and you will need to have your finances in order so that you can qualify for elder care. If you haven’t started working on a plan, you need to get started. Talk to someone you trust. You may need to consult a lawyer. – Ron Henson BSRN 745-7004 opt. 2

The results are in for the “Holiday Edition” of the 16 West Beautification Project. The daytime display winner is Faye Bone’s “Creepy Couple in Carriage.” A photo of this display appeared in The Voice in October. The second category award “nighttime display” goes to the White family of Crabtree for
their ever expanding multiple displays that wrap their way around the Crabtree corner. Sisters Diane and Janie said it all started 12 years ago when they put up a single Christmas tree of lights to honor the passing of their mother Mary Ann White, who had 11 children. “It’s become an opportunity for our families to come together for a good time, and we hope the community enjoys it as much as we do,” said Diane White. This year’s addition of a “Thank You Jesus” display, donated by Joy Lemings, honors Johnny White who recently lost his battle with cancer. Bobby Ward
Bobby Doyne Ward, 82, of Clinton went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 22, 2017 in his home. Bobby was born October 8, 1935 in Shirley, Arkansas to Herman and Pearl Ward. Bobby was a graduate of Shirley High School. He also attended Oakland City College in Indiana and the University of Central Arkansas receiving his BSE. Bobby taught at Shirley Public Schools for 30 years, where he also coached basketball. One of many highlights of his career was a runner-up junior high boys state championship in 1973. Bobby credited his training to become a teacher for preparing him for the ministry. He was ordained by Post Oak Grove Presbytery in 1958. He pastored his early years at Bethlehem Fox and at Shirley (Bethel). Later returning to Bethlehem Fox where he's pastored for 42 years, total of 60 years spreading God's word. He surmised that pastoring was where he could do his best work. He liked people and he like being there for them in times of joy and times of trouble. He was always visiting the sick, those that were mourning, and those who needed comforting words. He conducted countless funerals as well as weddings in both Van Buren and Stone counties. His children often joked he married everyone in the county. The hardest part of his ministry was some of the funerals he conducted and the most enjoyable was the fellowship with God's people. He claimed scripture Isaiah 61:1 as his own, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted to proclaim liberty to the captives..." He was preceded in death by his father,

SCOTLAND
The Frank Hawkins story / Final Chapter by Don Ramsey
Frank would eventually sell his drug store to Doc Emmons and Mr. Hatchett and then would also sell his farm west of Scotland that was known as the Hosea Meler Farm to a man by the name of Jess Newton. You may recall that in another story I wrote about treasures of Scotland that Jess Newton would find the 30 silver coins after he had removed the walkway of the house that he was moving so that he could build a new house. I bet Frank could have kicked himself for not looking around the property and trying to find those silver coins. Now that Frank had sold his house west of Scotland he had to find him and his family a new place to live. After looking for several weeks he decided to make Alfred Griggs an offer for his place as that Alfred was walking two miles each day to run his store in Scotland. Frank proposed that he would trade his house and lot in town for Alfred’s house and farm and pay the difference. When Frank went in the store and told Alfred what he wanted to do Alfred said he would think about it because his wife had just told him that morning that she was getting tired of staying there all the time by herself while their children were at school. The next morning Alfred came by and asked, “Frank, when do you want to move?” “I will be ready by tomorrow,” Frank replied “Well, I will need to get someone with a team and a wagon to move me,” Alfred told Frank. “Alfred, you get some people to help you and that’s all you need because I have two teams and two wagons and we can make this move pretty easy and get it over with,” Frank said as he stuck out his hand to make the deal a done deal. On January 5, 1920 Frank and his family moved to the Griggs farm and the Griggs family moved to town in Frank’s house, the deal was done. Frank was now living on 113 acres of land about a mile south of Scotland and started to haul rock and clear the land to be able to farm. He would hire some help to break the land but it was still hard work. That year was not a good year for cotton but the corn crop
was bountiful with the harvest of 450 bushels of corn and 800 bales of hay. September 1920 Frank’s daughter Minnie would marry Halley Dunsworth. Frank’s other daughter Hester would teach at Liberty School and would board at the Al Koone’s residence, and later on In 1922 Hester would teach at Crowell Mountain School and board at Claud Horton’s residence. Coming back from a trip to Clinton to go to court in March 1921 down by the river on the Stanleys’ land, Frank would be involved in a car accident. John Eskridge lost control of the car while driving and caused the car to flip three times. The car was a convertible and Frank was in the back. He would be thrown 35-40 feet and would land on his right shoulder and side. It took about four months before Frank could use his right arm at all. Frank couldn’t even use his arm to shave, but a good friend and neighbor A.B. O’Neal would come over and shave him. What crop Frank raised that year was by using his left hand while his right hand was in a sling. O’Neal and Frank would go in together and buy a hay baler and work the hayfields in the summer of 1922. In 1923, Frank’s daughter Hester would marry Charley Trotter. In 1924, Frank ran the Bank of Scotland and hired Chessie Reed and turned the 113-acre farm over to his son Joe. In the hay seasons Joe and A.B. O’Neal would work the hay fields. In 1925, Frank would hire Earl Gardner to help Joe on the farm and Frank would give Joe half of what was made and pay Earl a good wage. Joe married Clara Mae Underwood on January 27, 1926. They lived with Frank and Martha until they could build a house on two acres that Frank and Martha had given them. Later that fall Joe Hawkins would get a job as rural mail carrier at Scotland and would later be transferred to Higden in the fall of 1933 and then later to Miller and then on to Heber Springs and would retire early on January 1964 due to bad health. Frank would go in halves on a hay crop that he rented out to J.H. O’Neal and Witt Bloney and then later rented it to Walter Stubblefield.
Frank would later do some trading and would acquire the land that is still known as Brickey and then later sell it to his son Joe. Frank would own a lot of land in his lifetime and as you can see he would trade and sell it and rent it out or rent land. I don’t think there is any area around the Scotland area that Frank Hawkins didn’t have his hands on or involved with at some point of time. Frank was a business man that was not afraid of taking a chance on or afraid of hard work. Charley Trotter passed away in 1926 and Hester and her baby Jeanne Trotter would move back in with Frank and Martha. Hester then married Edgar Simpson and after he passed away, she later married Elmer Pruitt and moved to Clinton until her death on June 15, 1950. The Bank of Scotland failed in October 1930 and left Frank broke with only a poor upland place and a sickly family to support and still having to pay all the debts to make sure he still had a good name. Back then if a man shook your hand and told you it was a deal then he would work until his death to make sure that he kept his word and kept a good solid name for himself and his family. My Grandpa Dunham use to say that the only thing you take to your grave is your name and what you have done with your name is what you will be remembered by. Frank kept himself a good solid name. Many people tried to get Frank to file bankruptcy but he refused and it cost him over $3,000 and 15 years but he was finally able to get his debts paid off. $3,000 doesn’t sound like much now days, but in 1930 that was a lot of money. Frank was broke but he had some insurance in the Bankers Trust Company and he cashed that in and bought an old mare and a cultivator from Walter Stubblefield. Joe Hawkins had a mare that Frank had given him some years back and Joe let him use the mare to work the ground. Frank was 59 years old and his body was still strong as it could be from all the work and car accident and the previous sickness he had endured. With his determination and confidence and faith in God and lots of grit and prayers he was able to pay all his debts and maintain a good solid name.
Back in the early 1930s the U.S. government had started to give out work for the needy people, so Frank went to Clinton to sign up. The commissioner told Frank he was not eligible for the program. Frank described to him his situation and the commissioner let Frank work three months at $2.40 per day. With that money Frank was able to make a crop the next farming season. March 12, 1939 Frank’s stepmother passed away and Joe and Hester went to Texas to get Frank’s dad to move him in with Frank and Martha. He stayed with them until he passed away on August 28, 1948. In 1940 the U.S. government started a farm program. Frank at the age of 69 would work the farm program for five years all the while farming, cutting wood, and working in the hay fields along with any other jobs he could pick up. Frank never was one to stay idle for very long. Martha would become ill in 1946 with what some called a ulcerated colon, Frank said he was pretty sure it was colon cancer. With his wife sick it was time for Frank to start to slow down some and at the age of 75 on December 17, 1946, Frank Hawkins would start to draw old age assistance as he would call it. On September 25, 1950 Martha Belle Hawkins would succumb to her illness and pass away. In the fall of 1951 Frank would sell his place in Scotland to a man with the last name of Williams and November 3, 1952 Bryan Underwood would move Frank to 906 Quitman Street in Heber Springs where he lived until he was able to buy a place on Tenth Street. With age the body falls to many illnesses and Frank’s body was no exception. In September 1954 Frank went under the knife for prostate surgery. He would have to mortgage the house on Tenth Street to pay for the it. Then Frank again went under the knife on August 29, 1955 to have his gallbladder removed. Frank would move in with his granddaughter Betty Sue who was the daughter of Joe and Clara Hawkins. April 2, 1964 Betty Sue went to cook breakfast and as she turned on the stove the whole kitchen burst into flames as that there must have been a gas leak in
Frank Hawkins ran the Bank of Scotland from 1924 until its collapse in 1930. the line. Frank was trapped in his bedroom as that his bedroom door opened up to the kitchen. Betty Sue and Albert and the kids ran out the front door and Albert ran over to the gas tank to turn it off, but in his excitement he opened it full blast open. Albert then ran to the bedroom window that was about 2’x2’ where Frank was trying to get out and using his fist to break the glass Albert was able to get Frank out and saved his life. Albert’s hand was cut up pretty bad. Frank suffered some burns on his head but gave God the credit for helping Albert to perform a miracle and save Frank’s life. Frank lost all his important papers, a commentary of the Bible he had written, The Hawkins Family History that Frank had written down and all of his clothes other than the ones he had on. Frank and Betty Sue and Albert went to stay with Joe Hawkins until they were able to build a small house. In April 1965, Frank suffered a stroke that left him with memory loss for over a month, and then his memory started coming back to him and his family said his mind was as sound as it ever was up until his death. After his stroke Frank started to regain his strength and was able to leave the hospital in May 1965 and decided to go to Meadow Lake Nursing Home in Conway. Frank would regain his strength and be able to walk four miles a day. Many staff and visitors and residents there at the nursing home would remark about Frank’s cheerful attitude and everyone enjoyed his spiritual testimony. Many friends and family came to celebrate Frank’s 100th birthday on December 17, 1971. Frank was able to sit up and visit with everyone for well over three hours and even made a 30-minute tape of some of the conversations that went on that day. Frank Hawkins was strong in his faith and loved to read the Bible and had read it from front to back 40 times with the last time of finishing it on October
26, 1966. Frank said that he had read the New Testament well over 40 times but he didn’t keep up with it. One of his favorite sustaining expressions was “God must have a purpose for leaving me here.” Frank had often commented that he would die within five miles of where he was born, and just a few minutes past midnight on October 14, 1972 Frank Hawkins passed away quietly at Meadow Lake Nursing Home in Conway, Arkansas, within five miles of where he was born, short two months and three days of his 101st birthday. Frank Hawkins is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery where his wife and one son and three daughters proceed him in death are buried. Frank Hawkins a man who helped many people in life and helped Van Buren County, a name that despite all the adversities in life, through sickness, through many hard times and misfortunes, remained a Solid Good Name, a name to be proud of and respected. If the road in your life takes you down Highway 95 to Scotland, take time to drive downtown and you will see a little western store front building that has painted in big proud bold letters on the uppermost part of the store front, “1980 Scotland Guys and Gals.” Tip your hat to this little building because Frank Hawkins was once going about his daily business as he ran the drug store before he sold it to Doc Emmons. As you sit there on the front porch of the old drug atore look across the street to a little rock face building, for it is there that at one time Frank Hawkins ran the Bank of Scotland. While sitting there on the porch look to the left and closer to the creek bank and you will see an empty lot now, but it is there that Frank, Jeppe and Fletcher Hawkins once ran a cotton gin. You can’t really look at the old buildings that now are weathered and worn and falling down without thinking of one hard-working tough as boot leather man named Frank Hawkins.

Make 2018 the year of you
Geri’s Fit Tips Make this your year! 2018 is your opportunity to get back on track, shatter past limits and make this the single best year of your life. Here are some tips to get you focused and heading in the right direction.
1. Make a list of things to stop doing. List bad habits to stop, things that steal your joy, time wasters and things you will no longer be a part of, for example... excuses, wasting time on your phone, complaining, focusing on the negative instead of your blessings. 2. Make a goal list. Make it big. Dream. Write it down on a dry erase board and read it every day. You can achieve anything! 3. Forgive those who have hurt you. Few things drain your fire and destroy you
from moving forward more than carrying around people who have hurt you and the pain they have caused. 4. Live a healthy, vital life! Eat like you care about yourself! Eat less food, eat cleaner ingredients, drink more water, move your body and sweat for 20 minutes a day, get into nature daily, breathe fresh air deeply, soak up a little sun and get enough sleep! Use these tips to get started and make this an epic year! Happy new year y’all! – Geri Cabana, RN

Court from page 1
“It’s big. It’s not just some little lawsuit,” Jones said. The county’s response is due Jan. 10. That was one of the highlights of the Van Buren County Quorum Court’s final regular session of 2017. Also at the marathon session, which began with a reception at the Van Buren County Library and featured several speakers, the Quorum Court approved its 2018 budget. The vote was unanimous for the $5.7 million general budget, but it wasn’t without some discussion. Justice of the Peace Todd Burgess, who is not on the budget committee, told his colleagues the money spent the Drug Task Force is “misplaced.” He said it has not worked and it is time to find another avenue. He also questioned $17,000 for Global Foods, saying it is his understanding that the company has not paid the county a dime. Treasurer Kim Hunley said the mon-
Page 9 ey is for an audit that has to be done. And finally, Burgess the detention center brings in $300,000 per year holding federal prisoners and the first $150,000 of that is taken for county general. “The budget needs to be without smoke and mirrors and that money should go into the sheriff’s office budget where it is generated,” Burgess said. If that money was not put in the county general fund, “we actually had a shortfall of $150,000.” Dale James, who is the budget committee chairman, said the sheriff’s office spends $2 million and generates $150,000 for county general. Burgess argued that the money is dependent on whomever is sheriff and the next one could decide not to hold federal inmates. “You have to build a budget on money you know you’re going to get.” James said there was no reason not to anticipate that money. The budget committee did a good job, Burgess said. “No, we didn’t,”
Fun and Games Solutions:
JP Dell Holt said. “We didn’t do a good job, we did an outstanding job.” To make the budget balance, nine fulltime positions and two part-time positions were cut, and no raises were given. Also at the meeting, Circuit Judge H.G. Foster announced plans for an “enhanced supervision docket” that will operate something like a drug court, which Van Buren County had hoped to get funded by the state but did not. Earlier at the meeting, animal control officer Tim Pike asked for clarification on the county ordinance on animals. He wanted to know if he could cite owners if their animal is on their own property but not on a leash. There was some discussion that the rules were intentionally ambiguous because they should be different in towns and in the country. “I live in Chimes, I don’t need you stopping at my house and writing me a ticket,” said JP Kevin Housley. County attorney Chad Brown noted that if taken too literally, an owner could be cited every time he lets his dog out to urinate. “I don’t think you should drive around looking for dogs running loose in people’s yards,” Housley told Pike. The officer said that people sometimes call to complain about a neighbor’s dog, but by the time he gets there, the dog is back on its owners’ property. It was decided that the complainant should sign an affidavit to prosecute if they desired. In other action, Sheriff Randy Gurley said the sheriff’s office had two big busts, recovering over $230,000 in stolen property in one and $12,000 in stolen property in another. The JPs also approved an ordinance to lift the hiring freeze for the sheriff’s office and detention center.

Fishing Report
Striper fishing remains hot at Norfork Lake. Our reports from there note large numbers of stripers caught during Christmas week.
Central Arkansas
Little Red River
(update 12-272017) Lowell Myers of Sore Lip’em All Guide Service said the Little Red continues to experience low water conditions most days due to the small amounts of water release from the Greers Ferry Dam. This pattern is creating good wading conditions. They are in the brown trout spawning season here on the Little Red River, so their browns are moving to their spawning areas on shoals. If you do wade in or pull a boat through the spawning areas, be careful where you walk and don’t walk or disturb the redds (spawning beds). Sowbugs, midges, soft hackles and Woolly Buggers are working well for fly anglers. Pink-and-whitecolored Trout Magnets are recommended for spin fishing. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Army Corps of

Greers Ferry Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 456. 83 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 462.04 feet msl Oct. 1-April 30; 463.04 feet msl May 1-June 1; 462.54 feet msl June 1-Sept. 30). (update 12-272017) Tommy Cauley of Fishfinder Guide Service (501-9401318) said the water level at Greers Ferry Lake is at 455.78 feet msl as of Tuesday and is falling. It’s now 6.26 feet below normal pool of 462.04 feet msl. The black bass are out in about 40 feet, with some shallow as always. Try spinnerbaits and jigs for the shallow fish. The deeper fish can be caught on spoons, C-rigs, football heads and drop-shot rigs, with a few busting fish as well. Some of the crappie are shal-
low, suspended in 8-10 feet, and the rest suspended in 18-30 feet of water. Fish pole timber or brush pile in and around both with minnows or jigs. No report on walleye. Catfish are eating as they do in winter mode with the blues doing the best on a variety of baits. No report on bream. The hybrid and white bass are still chomping pretty well all over the lake with a few busting time to time, most consistent in about 40-45 feet on spoons, inline spinners, swimbaits and, of course, hair jigs.
North Arkansas
White River
(updated 12-272017) Cotter Trout Dock (870-435-6525) said that while many turned their thoughts and energy toward Christmas (and rightly so) and hunkering down for the colder months, there are folks still finding plenty of rainbows and browns willing to leave the comfort
of their favorite hidey-holes to meet you where you're at – but you have to be somewhere on the river. The water level below Bull Shoals Dam down past Cotter and beyond is very low, at minimum flow or below, so find some attractive bait to lure the trout out. Flashy gold Cleos should work well in this water, as well as the silver-blue hammered spoons. Fish for a sculpin to put on your hook for brown trout bait, although keep in mind it's spawning season and many browns will be ignoring your bait unless it's especially pesky. Kids will be looking for Christmas vacation adventures. PowerBait and shrimp are reliable baits to help them catch a few rainbows. So. pick up your rod and reel, get outside, and come join us on the river.
Norfork Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 549.78 feet msl (normal conservation pool: September-April 552.00 feet msl; April-September, 554.00 feet msl). (update 1227-2017) Lou Gabric at Hummingbird Hideaway Resort said Norfork Lake striped bass, hybrid bass and white bass are still in their fall pattern, but you can see signs of the bait and fish starting to transition to their normal winter patterns and locations. As the water cools, the bait tends to move out

to deeper water and gets to a depth typically 40-60 feet deep. As you can guess, the big predators move with the bait. Over the last week Lou has concentrated on finding and trying to catch the trophy fish in Norfork Lake: striped bass. Normally this time of year Lou will fish large flats in the lake in 35-50 feet of water. Cranfield Island flat, Mallard Point flat, Highway 101 bridge flat, and Big Sandy Flat east of the 101 Boat Dock are Lou’s typical fishing holes, he says. This year it has been a little different from prior years. Lou and his guests have found large schools of striped and hybrid bass on these flats, but it has been hit or miss. If the bigger fish are not there, you can just about be guaranteed that white bass will be on the flats. Some of the whites he has caught were in the 2- to 3-pound range. Lou says he moved around the last week and started fishing way up creek near 6B in Bennetts Bayou and found stripers but they started to move out toward the main lake during the week. Large schools of stripers moved a couple of miles out of the creek to slightly warmer water and are located south and east of the 6A marker, in 35-50 feet of water. He said he decided Tuesday to check out a creek in the mid-lake area. The water gets a little warmer as you head south. He started fishing a little before sun-
rise and saw shad flipping. When he got closer to the bait a large school of fish showed up. He had two live bait poles out with threadfin shad and was vertical-jigging with a spoon. He hooked up on all three rods at the same time. “What a fun dilemma! My fish on the spoon came unhooked and one of the live bait poles broke off, but I did manage to land a really big hybrid. I could see the bait starting to move out of the cove so I followed. I ran into the school again and landed a couple more hybrids and a couple of whites. The fish continued to move out and I found them one more time. It was a lot of fun for an hour or so,” he said. Lou then moved out to the main part of Float Creek and marked bait with scattered bigger fish and got plenty of bites on live bait, but they would only take the back half of his baits, so no hookups after the early morning schools of feeding fish. A friend was trolling in the same area and the fish were loving it. He had one hookup after another; it was fun watching, Lou said. The scattered fish were suspended about 10-20 feet down, but as the morning wore on Lou was marking them close to the bottom around 35-40 feet deep.
