Letter from the Publisher We made it through another year with hopefully some wins, and perhaps some losses, but definitely great memories. One thing is for sure – we are all exhausted and in desperate need of a foot massage. Every year it seems that Churchill Downs, the city of Louisville and every Louisvillian who plays host to a worldwide audience for “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” serve to make the first Saturday in May and everything leading up to it more exciting, more glamorous and the absolute best the River City has to offer. The 140th Kentucky Derby has come and gone, and Louisville, you’ve topped yourself for another year. My husband, Jonathan, and I along with our two daughters, Talia and Tamar, were proud to welcome Jay Williams, Charissa Thompson, Kris Humphries, David Oestreicher and Josh Ketroser as our guests this year. We toasted the town and enjoyed showing off everything Louisville has to offer during this special time of year. Of course, we couldn’t be everywhere – and that’s where our talented Voice-Tribune staff came in. We were on hand for the big race, the red carpet and all the highly anticipated festivities. We’ve captured the best moments for you to enjoy here in our second annual special commemorative publication, featuring all the magic that is Derby time. We’ve done it again. And we hope you enjoy it as much as you enjoyed Derby 140. Relax and enjoy!

For the sixth year, The Longines Kentucky Oaks celebrated stories of survival in the Longines Kentucky Oaks Survivors Parade, presented by Kroger. For the 140th running of the fillies, 140 survivors of breast and ovarian cancer and their families marched around the historic Churchill Downs track. As has become tradition, attendees of the Friday races wore pink in a solidarity “Pink-Out with those in the fight against breast cancer. The 2014 parade also paid tribute to Tricia Amburgey, former vice president of ticketing at Churchill Downs, whose own battle against breast cancer inspired the creation of the walk. Amburgey passed away in 2013. Prior to the parade, each marcher received a solo walk down the Oaks pink carpet.

Friday was all about the ladies as Churchill Downs held the 140th running of the Longines Kentucky Oaks on May 2. The finest fillies in the world competed for a $600,000 purse and the garland of lillies on the Friday before the Derby. Odds-on favorite Untapable, trained by Steve Asmussen and owned by Ron Winchell of Winchell Thoroughbreds, took home an easy 4 1/2-length victory with jockey Rosie Napravnik riding. Napravnik picked up her second Oaks victory, her first coming in 2012. Untapable beat out a 13-horse field, with Empress of Midway being scratched just before the start of the race after falling at the starting gate. Untapable won with a time of 1:48:6 before an announced crowd of 113,000.

In a new one for the Derby storybooks, an $8,000 mare that no one in the know gave a second look to became a Kentucky Derby champion. Race favorite California Chrome pulled away from the 19-horse pack in the home stretch, carrying jockey Victor Espinoza to victory in the 140th Run for the Roses. California Chrome’s victory gave trainer Art Sherman the distinction of being the oldest trainer to bring a horse to victory at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. The win gave Espinoza his second career Derby victory, and the first horse to race for owners Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, who formed the partnership Dumb Ass Partners from a comment made about the horse’s sale. California Chrome is only the fourth horse from California to win the Derby, doing so before the second highest attendance in Churchill Downs history: 164,906.
