he slowly darkening days of the season are creeping in; falling leaves, shadowed skies and cooling temperatures are setting the stage for the end of the year. Our VOICE Louisville team decided that we wanted the final cover of the year to shake that up with some luxurious holiday sparkle, offsetting the incoming winter gloom a little bit. Luckily for us, Stuart Mercer graciously agreed to come all the way from his stylish shop in Lexington, and dazzle our December cover! Sunglasses MAY be required. Alex Hepfinger and Pascalle Ballard.

Stuart came prepared for the shoot with a full arsenal of sharply tailored suits, in spectacular fabrics. Lincliffe’s armchairs were draped in neckties...cufflinks were adjusted...there was even a duotone blazer that shimmered blue and green ever so subtly. It was wonderful to be able to work with so many colors and options than just your traditional black tuxedo - going to show that there’s a lot of creativity and fun to be had with menswear. Mix it up with a pattern or two, or add a fancy pop of velvet? No better time than the holidays to let Stuart’s examples here inspire you! While Stuart suited up, the rest of us wrapped prop presents, and possibly got a little caught up in a moment or two of swordfighting. The gold wrapping paper that Andrea brought was a worthy weapon, but we were scrubbing glitter off of our hands for the rest of the day! With Frank Sinatra on the speakers, the shoot went as smoothly as silk. Stuart’s charm really radiates through these shots, and it was wonderful to spend a lighthearted and sunshiney afternoon making this cover. To cap it off, we discovered that it was his birthday! In true VOICE fashion, we had to celebrate with a fizzy glass of champagne (or seltzer) and sing him happy birthday. Somewhere, very silly phone footage of our serenade exists...failing to be able to share that video here, these photos should suffice to bring a little silliness and sparkle to brighten your holidays. As reader, you complete our team - raise a glass of your own and come along with VOICE Louisville into 2022!

or the third year in a row, VOICE Louisville is pleased to share the winners of the Bestie Awards, chosen by you, encompassing all of Louisville’s favorites. Voting for the Besties opened on our website in September and with the assistance of a thirdparty company, we tallied the thousands of responses to give you the best of what Louisville has to offer. If you took the time to vote, you may notice several categories from the original ballot do not appear on these pages. These sections were omitted due to a lack of votes. Longtime VOICE readers may recall voting for Best Dressed in an annual competition hosted by the magazine in the early 2000s, so we couldn’t resist including that category in the lineup. See page 100 to get a closer look at winners Claudia Coffey and Jeff Hunter. Each of these winners was selected by you – the readers who took the time to vote for the best businesses, organizations and people in our community. Thank you for being part of the 2021 Bestie Awards, and congratulations to all of the winners!

hough in its adolescence, the newly established hair salon TRIM NuLu has proven its quality and professionality through the expertise and experience of its stylists. Since its opening, the salon has seen expansive growth and reach within the community. We spoke with CEO and Co-Founder Sean Stafford to get to know some history of the salon and discuss the salon’s success thus far.
How did TRIM Nulu get its start? I’m one of the owners and founders of an ad tech company called El Toro, and recently we started bringing in food and offering onsite haircuts for our employees. When we had executives from Texas Roadhouse and Humana come through, they would see our employees getting their haircut onsite and ask how they could get that for their employees. Being entrepreneurs, that’s when the lightbulb went off. We turned that idea into a company called TRIM.co, and it was all onsite haircuts, which is great because there’s a built-in customer base. Then COVID hit, and all the businesses went to remote work. We had just become an investor in the Gateway of NuLu building, so we had some space available. We decided to build a high-end salon in that space. That’s how we came to have TRIM NuLu.
When did the salon open, and how has it grown?
Chris Edwards.
We opened in August 2020. The growth has been explosive and massive. Last month alone, we put on 325 new clients. I can’t hire stylists fast enough! Since we’ve opened the salon, we’ve doubled the space, and now we need to double it again.
What are some services you offer at TRIM NuLu? We offer balayage, color, highlights, lowlights, babylights, artistic haircuts, special occasions and facial waxing. The great thing is, everything is compartmentalized. The haircutters only cut hair, and that’s what they’ve been doing for a long time. The same thing with the colorists, they are color specialists, and they don’t cut hair. Everyone has one focus, so over the years, they’ve honed their craft. That’s where the quality comes from. What experience can a customer expect when coming to TRIM NuLu? We have a high retention rate because all our stylists are engaging. Some folks leave feedback, saying, yes, the coloring or styling is fantastic, but the people are amazing. The atmosphere is always relaxed.
What distinguishes TRIM NuLu from other salons in town? We have high-end stylists, but we’re not pretentious. Anybody can come as they are, and we are an open and welcoming environment. Another significant factor is you can make all your bookings online. In most places, you have to call in, and you can do that here too. Our clients love the easy use of our system, though. They can book their haircut, style, color or anything else online.
What does it mean to TRIM NuLu to have won so many Besties? It speaks to the loyalty of our clients and to how engaged and welcoming our employees are. I think it also speaks to the relationships built through all of that. We started this salon in the middle of the pandemic, and we’ve seen explosive growth since. It’s because we’ve got quality stylists, and there is a mutual love between the clients and us. v TRIM NuLu 552 E Market St. Suite 225 Louisville, KY 40202 833.874.6444 trimnulu.co Want to be a part of our Health & Beauty Chat column? The Magic Within Milestone A Milestone member shares how he became and continues to be a walking miracle
By RACHEL PORTER | Photos by KATHRYN HARRINGTON
K
irk Menefee, a member of Milestone Wellness Center, understands the power of living a healthy lifestyle firsthand. In 2016, Menefee was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a severe and incurable lung disease. Through organ donations, he was able to have a double lung transplant in 2019. We spoke with Menefee to talk about his health journey and how Milestone has played a role in his recovery.
When did you first get into fitness? My father died when I was 27-years-old of a sudden heart attack at the age of 57. I decided then to change my lifestyle and get into cardiovascular fitness. I am a marathoner, golfer and long-distance swimmer. I joined Milestone in 2008.
How has Milestone been a part of your life and supported you throughout your transplant experience? Milestone is a spectacular facility with all the bells and whistles, but the main thing that intrigued me about it at first was the pool. However, I cannot go without saying something about my two fabulous trainers, Alison Cardoza and Miranda Mercke. Without both of them, I would not be where I am today.

What was it like working out with new lungs for the first time at Milestone? The first time I returned to Milestone was on Oct. 2, 2020. A little more than two years since I had been in the water and it was fantastic! I remember approaching the pool and being very apprehensive about my lungs. I pushed off the wall and stroked slowly. I was waiting for the fatigue and felt nothing. So I picked up the pace, and by the third lap, I knew my donor had given me something special. I cried as I swam to the end of the lane and started screaming. That day I did one mile, 142 lengths of the pool, without stopping.
What are some of your future health goals? Next year, I am going to San Diego to compete in the Transplant Games of America in swimming and golf. When it gets closer to the games, I will work on interval techniques and my strokes with Miranda. I want this to give people hope and a reason not to give up. There are around 114,000 Americans on an organ waiting list, but there has to be the strength to receive one. I never dreamed my running and swimming prior would help me, but it comes in handy when you go through something like this. v Baptist Health/Milestone Wellness Center 750 Cypress Station Dr. Louisville, KY 40207 502.896.3900 baptistmilestone.com DECEMBER 2021

P
ersonal training guru Sylvester “Sly” Davis has been training at the JCC for ten years. Growing up, Sly was into athletics, whether playing sports in school or working out with friends. This passion for fitness grew as he obtained his BA in Exercise Science and has been training ever since. “My philosophy is for the client to become a better version of themselves, whether they become stronger or more physically fit. That mindset trickles into their psychological and spiritual wellness as well,” Sly noted.
Sly works with people of all ages, from teenagers to seniors. Distinguishing his approach to each age group, Sly explained, “when working with young athletes, I create the routine to emulate their sport. It’s about teaching them how to use and be aware of their body in space. Getting into an athletic form translates through exercises like a push-up or a squat position, which also helps build strength to withstand the rigor of their sport.” Whereas for seniors, Sly’s goal is to “make everyday life easier. That’s the goal for anybody, but especially my seniors. Most of the
time, we start with leg-based exercises, which entails them to use their body efficiently when moving things around in their own everyday life, like picking up their kids, carrying groceries, or lifting a heavy box.” Reflecting on the personal training program at the JCC, Sly concluded, “we’re all about building a higher quality of life physically and educating people about the reasons why we’re doing the exercises. A personal trainer is a great tool if you need guidance, whether you’re a seasoned person who needs to change your routine or you’re a total beginner.”

Southern Living Idea House The magazine’s first Idea House in Kentucky presents timelessly evolved inspiration By SARAH CARTER LEVITCH | Photos by KATHRYN HARRINGTON 48

or the past 30+ years, Southern Living magazine has designed and constructed an “Idea House” in various states throughout America. “Made to inspire people that are considering building or remodeling, or for people who love houses and love going to see inspirational types of design, both interior and exterior,” noted builder Jimmy King, co-owner of Artisan Signature Homes. The house is open to the public for tours and available to purchase, with or without the furniture. The Idea House was built in our old Kentucky home, right here in Louisville, for the first time.
DECEMBER 2021
Artisan Signature Homes, based in Louisville, collaborated with a team put together by Southern Living: Brandon Ingram, the architect from Atlanta, Sarah Bartholomew, the interior designer from Nashville and Josh Myers, the landscape architect from Louisville. Together, their goal was “to build a new home with an old feel. We wanted the design to be timeless. As far as the floor plan and the interior, we wanted it to flow well, something liveable.” Located in The Breakers at Prospect, a new community, the property serves panoramic views of the Ohio River, a classical feel with a mix of Colonial and Greek
Revival design and a spacious atmosphere at a little over 5,000 square feet. The interior reveals the designers’ attention to detail. As King mentioned, “one of the best interior features is the level of detail of the trim work. Oversized trim work, sixpiece crown molding, lots of wood planking, all the trim work is hand brushed to give it an old feel. We did hand-painted floors in addition to white oak hardwood floors throughout.” Along with this generous attention to adornment, the designers remained conscious of the ever-evolving family unit and more recent adaptations to work-at-home life. King noted two unique features to VO I C E -T R I B U N E . C O M |

the Idea House, “Some of these rooms were pandemically inspired, like the studio on the first floor. That room is right off the kitchen, and adults can go in and make zoom calls. There are lockers and a desk area where kids can do their homework. There is also a study area on the second floor, but the studio is a multi-functional room. We also built two primary bedrooms on the first floor, which is a great feature for people aging in place or people who want to bring their parents in.”

Each room, overflowing with inspiration, presents an individual exploration into the everyday life of a family home, from work to play to r&r. King shared, reflecting on the rooms, “one of my favorite areas, because of the scenic areas overlooking the Ohio River, is the second-floor porch. I can envision myself waking up in the morning, enjoying a cup of coffee with the sweeping views of the Ohio, or winding down in the evening in the backyard, watching the sunset over the pavilion. There are very picturesque views.” “I also love the media room on the second floor, which walks out to the porch.

It’s cozy and multi-functional, like an upstairs living room. There is a beautiful arched window above these french doors that lead out to the porch. When you walk up the stairs to the second floor, you get to the top and look out the doors. It takes your breath away to see the views.” In a moment of gratitude, King expressed his appreciation for the experience, “It’s a cool thing for Artisan Signature Homes to be a part of. Southern Living is a national, iconic magazine, so we were honored and proud to be chosen to build the first Idea House in Kentucky. I am thankful to those designers, Southern Living, and the local tradespeople who
worked so hard on this house. Whether from the artwork, interior design, paint colors or floor plan, I hope people gather ideas for their next build or remodel.” The 2021 Idea House is open to the public until December 19. Tickets are $25, and a portion of the proceeds go to two local charities, Gilda’s Club of Kentuckiana and The LEE Initiative. v Southern Living Idea House 7820 Sutherland Farm Rd. So Kaveh, let’s jump into the brand history. What is the story of Rabbit Hole? I’ll start by saying that “rabbit hole” is about transformation. All good things require passion and commitment, love and work. Rabbit Hole was born nearly ten years ago out of love for bourbon and a desire to elevate it to its rightful place, along with other great spirits from around the world. As a young man, I cut my teeth in the hospitality business and had a long-standing passion for spirits with a desire to start my own brand. I approached making whiskey as a consumer, invigorated about the beauty of bourbon, and tried to reimagine what it could be. In the early days, just like Alice (of Alice in Wonderland), I was bored with what seemed to be a sea of sameness on the back 64

Your team seems to be breaking the mold towards innovation. Anything you would like to bring to light? The future is looking pretty bright from what I gather looking down the rabbit hole. Rabbit Hole is about reimagining what bourbon and American whiskey can be, so there is an element of innovation in everything we do. In addition to our core lineup, our Founder’s Collection captures an even more profound expression of our creativity as a brand, giving my team and me the ability to produce limited-edition spirits made with originality and our unique approach to making spirits. DECEMBER 2021
This facility is fascinating. Architecturally, there is no doubt that this is a work of art in manufacturing or, should I say, creating. Was this a realized concept from the beginning? From the beginning, my vision for the distillery was to create a sense of awe. I was intimately involved in every step of the process, guiding the design elements from beginning to end. My goal was to create a fully transparent space, giving our guests a truly unique experience. Transparency and innovation are fundamental to Rabbit Hole; it’s part of our DNA. The distillery is built to show our approach to whiskey-making openly. Rabbit Hole has turned the industry on its head, first concerning what we do from a liquid standpoint creating our own mash bills, making whiskey according to proprietary methods. From a distillery perspective, we showcase the entire process from grain to bottle. Our packaging is sophisticated, stylish and contemporary, a departure from what you see in the category. We are reimaging and reinterpreting what American whiskey can be. As a result, we are standing apart as a unique player in the bourbon category. Ashley Angel and Joe Daily.
Joe Daily and Kaveh Zamanian.
Let’s talk about whiskey. To start, I love the fact that your lowest proof sits at 46.5% ABV. To me, this is a sign of not sacrificing quality, and it does not go unnoticed. Was this the intended purpose? We don’t take any shortcuts. In the end, it’s all about making the best whiskey in the world. The liquid right off the still goes in the barrel at 110 proof even though we’re allowed to take it up to 125. We choose the lower entry proof to maximize flavor even though it yields less at harvest. We place our whiskey in the bottle at a higher proof because we want the flavor of our whiskey to come through not only neat or on the rocks but also in cocktails. For me, it’s all about quality and flavor.
As we cruise back towards the facility, I can’t help but stare at the bar area. Is this open to the public all the time, or is it specific to tours? Overlook is our tasting room and bar, and it has sweeping panoramic views that “overlook” the skyline of Louisville

and the Ohio River. It is the only bar that “overlooks” the entire distillation process, giving visitors the chance to have a cocktail steps away from our copper column still. We designed Overlook to look like an upscale cocktail lounge or restaurant, allowing our guests to experience Rabbit Hole in a beautiful setting. At Overlook, Rabbit Hole has a cocktail program curated by the brand’s resident mixologists to highlight the rich, complex spirits Rabbit Hole produces and celebrate the creativity at the core of everything Rabbit Hole does. The team utilizes ingredients from all over the world to represent the coming together of different cultures. Overlook is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM and is available for private events.
The cocktails are superb, and it’s obvious this is not a run-of-themill program. Solid thought and technique are being expressed through cocktails here. It seems Rabbit Hole Whiskey took cocktail culture seriously before it ever hit the market. For instance, the proof to me again of the whiskey is a sign your team was paying attention. Was the cocktail renaissance a factor at play with the fruition of Rabbit Hole? No – I started thinking about Rabbit Hole in the early 2000s, which was before the cocktail renaissance was a thing. When I began to develop my own spirits brand, bourbon still had not captured wide national consumer attention. I got into the bourbon business as a way to spread the word about bourbon and bring “America’s native spirit” into prominence. Cocktails are simply a natural way of achieving that goal. With that said, forward-thinking, talented bartenders and cocktail bars around the country genuinely put a spotlight on bourbon and American whiskey, and now, there’s no going back. Joe Daily and Kaveh Zamanian.
Let’s discuss a bit more about cocktails. I was lucky enough to enjoy a Rabbit Hole cocktail crafted by the Beverage Director, Ashley Angel. Any recommended cocktail or neat pour pairings you would suggest for our readers? When I have a skirt steak or a filet mignon, I love to pair it with Cavehill because the honey and sweet notes complement a steak. I generally have our Boxergrail rye in a Manhattan, and I also enjoy Boxergrail with seafood such as tuna or crab cakes. The spice and floral, herbaceous notes of the Boxergrail pair beautifully with seafood. I most often drink Heigold with one large ice cube, and if I’m pairing, it’s with a salad. It’s a wonderful unexpected pairing with a niçoise salad or an apple-pear salad. I highly recommend it. Lately, I have been enjoying Dareringer in cocktails. I recently enjoyed a Black Manhattan using Dareringer, and it was really sweet, and it was great! Kaveh, it has been wonderful to sit down with you, my friend, and I love the pairings. I am looking forward to your recommendations. Thank you again to you and the team for taking the time to sit down with us. I know to schedule this time a year is tough on us all in the spirits industry. If you’re reading this, cheers, my friend! Thank you. To my readers, I always include a drink recipe, and it just so happens that Ashley Angel of Rabbit Hole put together a quick and easy cocktail for us to reproduce at home for the holiday season. If you want to try the complex cocktail builds, I suggest swinging by Rabbit Hole for a tour, cocktail and a high-five. Tell Ashley I sent you. Until next time everyone. Maple on the Hill, Ashley Angel Tools required to tipple your senses: • 1oz and 2oz Jigger (A bartender’s instrument to measure) • Yarai Mixing Glass (This is 90% of the time a glass vessel, but there are some metal versions as well) • Stirring Spoon (This is a spoon designed to stir cocktails) • Hawthorne Strainer or Julep Strainer(I prefer Hawthorne strainers for all applications) • Old Fashioned Glass • Y-Peeler (This is for peeling the garnish) • Ice Scoop (The tool everyone forgets, including me) Where the magic happens: • 2oz Allspice-Infused Rabbit Hole Cavehill Four Grain Bourbon • .5oz Maple Honey Syrup (3 Maple: 1 Honey) • 3 Dashes Angostura Bitters • 1 Dash Walnut Bitters (Fee Brothers) • Ice: Large Format Ice (You can buy larger 2x2” ice molds, or you can purchase clear premium ice) • Garnish: Large Swath of Orange Peel (Option ¼ Orange Wheel with walnut bitters and whole clove) Directions: In the mixing glass, add Rabbit Hole Cavehill Bourbon and Maple Honey Syrup together. Add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters. Add 1 Dash of Walnut Bitters (Fee Brothers). Fill with ice above the fluid line (I usually fill almost ¾ up in the mixing glass). Stir the cocktail, moving the spoon to the outside wall of the mixing glass 37-50 times. We want smooth laminar flow. (What that meansLaminar flow, we have layers of liquid moving in the same direction in return, supercooling the beverage) Your ice should swirl seamlessly quietly. Requires a little practice! Strain ingredients using your Hawthorne strainer over fresh large format ice into an Old-Fashioned glass. Peel your garnish and “express” oils over the cocktail, which can be done by twisting the peel over the cocktail or by the pinch method. Lean in, and you can see the oils being released into the cocktail. Take your orange peel and use the orange skin side of the peel. Rub it around the rim of the glass to add oils and aroma to the rim. Discard peel.

Give the gift of experience this holiday season By AMY BARNES | Photos by KATHRYN HARRINGTON Wardrobe courtesy of RODES FOR HIM | FOR HER
W
hat do you give to the person who has everything? VOICE Louisville recently spoke to Crew Aviation regarding unique luxury gift ideas for the one who seems to have it all. Here are a few suggestions to show your appreciation!
What can I offer to the person who does so much for me all year long? Create an exceptional experience with a memorable trip. For example, a private charter flight to Chicago for the evening will make your significant other swoon! With a short flight, you can leave Louisville in time for dinner at the elegant and esteemed Alinea’s or perhaps attend a black-tie gala evening at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Crew’s concierge team can plan the details of your trip, arrange car service upon landing at Chicago Midway, provide champagne and hors d’oeuvres for the flight, flowers for your beloved, even arrange a photographer to capture the memories before departure.
What can I give to the sports fan in my circle of family and friends? Treat them to tickets to their favorite team or a bowl game! What better way to show them you understand their love of the sport than to have a private charter flight arranged to take them and their guests, in style, to watch their favorite football team? Life is about experiences, and this is an experience they will not soon forget! Let the Crew team help you create an unforgettable day with a flight dedicated to the game. Onboard appetizers and brews specially stocked with every detail planned for a fun and relaxing day with friends and family. 72

Can I travel privately with children and pets?

Imagine a grandparent’s surprise when you tell them you can make the family Christmas celebration! Forget the headache of arranging pet sitters or juggling a dog crate. Control the timing and destination of your entire flight while eliminating many of the risks of commercial airline travel. Arrive less stressed and ready to enjoy the time with family and friends, knowing our expert staff and crew are managing your trip details. Relax and enjoy the holidays!
A trip to New York for a day of shopping, of course! The streets and avenues of NYC are calling, and what better way to finish the year with a private trip complete with a shopping spree? Featuring Ann Dreisbach of Whitehouse Residential & Commercial Painting
D
By SARAH CARTER LEVITCH | Photos provided by WHITEHOUSE
istinguished in the community for their craftsmanship and quality, Whitehouse Residential & Commercial Painting endures as the premier painting contractor in Kentuckiana. Whether painting a home or a church, Whitehouse Residential & Commercial Painting guarantees satisfaction and professionalism. We spoke with Ann Dreisbach, Director of Marketing, about the company and its breadth of work, and we asked Dreisbach to share some of the company’s painting advice for homeowners.
Tell me about Whitehouse Residential & Commercial Painting and what it means to be a mother and daughter business. We are a full-service professional painting company. It is a family business, and we refer to ourselves as partners. Amy Bergeron, the owner of Whitehouse Residential & Commercial Painting, manages our staff of 40 people and handles the day-to-day operations and production. I do marketing and development. For me, as a mother, I’m so proud of her and what she’s accomplished. It brings me joy to see her success. 82

| VO I C E -T R I B U N E . C O M
Our business has grown exponentially, and she has made that happen. She grew up in a family business. My husband is part of the Dreisbach family of Dreisbach Wholesale Florists, a company started in 1911, so Amy understands how to run a successful family business. We have painters that have been with us for a long time because they like our professional work environment and how we care about them. We refer to our painters as professionals. Every day we have painters calling who want to work for our company because we have an excellent reputation. They want to wear our shirts. DECEMBER 2021
What spaces do Whitehouse Residential & Commercial Painting paint? We love to do family homes and see how happy a family is when their home is freshened up! We also do banks, schools, churches, commercial buildings, large offices, warehouses, airports, business centers, retail centers, malls, distilleries and barns. We cover it all. Our favorite project was the St. John’s Center for Homeless Men, a church built in 1858. It’s here in Louisville on Clay Street. It was a transformational project that involved plaster repair and painting. We worked with an interior designer, and we installed a fourstory scaffolding because the ceiling is five stories high. We also cleaned and repaired several old paintings. It was challenging, but our painters took great pride because it is where people can come to find solace.
Do you collaborate with designers? Yes, many times, a client may call us and ask if we can work with their designer, and many times a designer will contact us and say they have a client that is a perfect fit for our professionalism and quality. We do not select colors for the client, though we might give them options.
What do painting and color do to a space? Painting your home is the least expensive way to freshen it up. Color creates a canvas for you to work within a room, setting your tone and mood. If you want something energetic, you will paint it bright or vivid colors. We have seen through our industry partners the trends in color. For the last ten years, blue has been the favored color, and now, it is trending towards sage and olive green.
How often do you recommend homeowners paint their homes? A person’s home is usually the most significant investment in their lifetime. Maintaining your home goes a long way in protecting that investment. If your exterior is painted by a professional paint contractor who uses high-quality paints, it should last five to seven years, but it lasts much longer with yearly maintenance. We recommend homeowners have their exterior appropriately painted by a

83
professional and have the painters inspect it annually for peeling paint and cracks in the paint. Places to look for are around windows and on the side of your house that gets the most afternoon sun. Watch for weathered decks, wood rot and damaging mildew too. For the interior, be sure your painting contractor uses the highest quality paint. Other paints don’t hold up as well.
What is a helpful tip for a homeowner looking for painters? When looking for a painter, always ask if they warranty their work and use the highest quality paints. Be sure they have workman’s comp insurance and liability insurance. Ask them to show you their certificates. That’s very important to you as a homeowner. At Whitehouse Residential & Commercial Painting, we offer 100% customer satisfaction and warranty our work. A warranty is only as good as the company warranting. If somebody is only in business for a year, and they warranty your work, they may not be around in a few years when you need someone to do warranty work. We also have carpenters that work with us to repair wood rots or put up shutters. v White House Residential & Commercial Painting 8045 Warwick Ave. Louisville, KY 40222 502.425.0483 whitehousepaint.com

The Arts
Adopt an Artwork Program A timeless gift of restoring the past to preserve the future of art history By MELISSA CHIPMAN Photos provided by SPEED ART MUSEUM In the Alhambra, Jean-Léon Gérôme.
L
ooking for an extravagant present for the person on your holiday shopping list who is impossible to buy for? The Speed Art Museum has recently created an “Adopt an Artwork” program as a way for museum supporters to participate in the process of the restoration of some works in their collection. The restoration and conservation of the artworks in the Speed’s collection is an ever-present concern. In a recent assessment of the permanent collection, the museum’s curators identified several objects requiring assistance. They’ve developed a section on their website devoted to cataloging these works of art, everything from medieval reliquaries to Impressionist paintings to contemporary sculpture. Sponsorship is not limited solely to individuals, or entire families, even companies can elect to join the “Adopt an 90

Artwork” program. All funds donated to the program are tax-deductible. As part of the adoption process, sponsors will receive: • A short dossier on the work they have chosen • An opportunity to discuss with the curator the issues surrounding the object, why it needs repair or restoration, and the conservation process • A color photo of the sponsor with the adopted object installed in the gallery • A credit line on the gallery label giving recognition to the adoptive sponsor for five years Some of the works have already been adopted. For example, Portrait of a Child (1881) by French artist Paul Gaugin is a small work currently being restored. According to the catalog description, “Currently, there is a thin layer of natural resin varnish on the surface of the
painting which is discolored and uneven. Even worse, a significant grime layer coats the varnish. All this can be reversed with the removal of the grime and discolored varnish. Any losses will be restored via Inpaint.” According to curator Erika HolmquistWall, other adopted pieces include Willard Metcalf ’s The Convalescent (on view in Gallery 1). Ron and Debra Murphy, who adopted Jean-Léon Gérôme’s In the Alhambra (on view in Gallery 23). The Speed’s Board of Governors banded together to adopt Edward Fisk’s Portrait of Mary Daniel (on view in Gallery 1). Susan Callen, with her husband, a longtime supporter of the Speed, told the VOICE, “We find conservation of art to be a fascinating process as it brings artworks back to life. This particular oil painting is of a beautiful young woman reading a book in bed. As a bibliophile, DECEMBER 2021
The Convalescent, Willard Metcalf.
Portrait of Mary Daniel, Edward Fisk.
I was moved by the use of a book in the painting. It’s possible my husband found the young woman pictured enticing, but he doesn’t admit to that!” Matthew Henry Wilson’s most famous painting, Portrait of Abraham Lincoln (1865), is a notable work that is still up for adoption for $4,000. The description catalogs several portraits, including, “Honestly, Abe isn’t looking too great in this painting...Essentially, at some point, somebody applied a coat of varnish over an already-filthy painting, thinking that it would improve the appearance and make it brighter. Instead, it only trapped the dirt underneath, sealing it in.” Restoration would remove the old coat of varnish and clean the painting thoroughly. Lincoln’s frame likewise needs repair and is available to sponsor for $3,000. “We are in the process of uploading a whole new group of artworks that we’ve DECEMBER 2021
assessed as requiring structural or surface intervention to make the artwork exhibitable in the galleries,” said HolmquistWall. “We also present a selection of the most recently adopted works that are straight from the conservation laboratory in Gallery 1, as part of the rotating ‘What’s New at the Speed?’ installation. You’ll always be able to see newly restored works in that space before those works are integrated into the permanent collection.” Holmquist-Wall says that one piece uniquely holds her heart: Tissot’s Waiting for the Ferry at the Falcon Tavern. It was a particularly long treatment due to a stubborn, aged varnish layer that had shifted in its chemical composition. Seeing how bright that picture is now, after knowing what it looked like in its ‘before’ state, makes my heart happy. We, and especially the adoptive donor, did right by that gorgeous painting. v

The Nature of Force
Forces are more mysterious than you might think By STEVE HUMPHREY
F
orce is a term ubiquitous in Physics and in ordinary life. We talk about the force acting on some object or person which causes some change in that object or person. But forces can be mysterious and invisible, and sometimes even nonexistent. Examples of the latter are the centrifugal force and the Coriolis Force. These are known as “fictitious forces”, whose apparent existence results from an infelicitous choice of reference frame. It turns out that the force of gravity might be of just this sort. For Aristotle (and all things begin with Aristotle), everything in the world is composed of some combination of five basic elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Quintessence (“Fifth Element”. Great movie, by the way, starring Bruce Willis and Mila Jovovich.) In those days it was widely believed that the Earth was
98

| VO I C E -T R I B U N E . C O M
flat, and up and down were much different that left and right, or forward and back, in that while it is just as easy to move left or right, no such symmetry exists for up and down. Each of the elements has a “Natural Place”. Earth’s place is lowest, then Water’s, then Air’s and then Fire’s. The Natural Motion of an object is toward its natural place. So, objects made of Earth tend to fall, as do objects made of water (think of rain). Air tends to rise, and Fire rises more rapidly. In Aristotle’s day, it was believed that the Earth was at rest while the heavens revolved around it, in perfect circles. The Natural Motion of Quintessence is to go in a circle, which explains the motion of the extra-lunar planets and stars without requiring the introduction of a force. Now, a force is defined as anything that changes a body’s motion away from its natural state. This presents puzzles. Consider an archer shooting an arrow into the
DECEMBER 2021
air. The arrow is composed primarily of Earth, so its natural motion would be to fall straight to the ground after leaving the bow. But it doesn’t. Why not? There must be a force preventing it from falling. It was proposed that a force was impressed upon the arrow by the string of the bow which pushes the arrow along. This force gradually leaks away, so the arrow follows an arced path and eventually comes to rest on the ground. But then along came Galileo, who I have mentioned before in discussing his experiments with inclined planes. Quite amazingly, he came to believe that the natural motion of all bodies, regardless of composition, was to proceed in a straight line at a constant rate forever. “Amazingly”, because his observations were confined to small balls rolling down inclined planes in a limited area, and he never saw anything go in a straight line forever. Even the planets go in circles. So, this was pure conjecture. Newton picked up on this, and it became his First Law of Motion. “A body at rest remains at rest unless acted on by an outside force, and an object in motion remains in motion in a straight line at a constant speed unless acted on by an outside force.” Let’s go back to the archer. Now we have a different puzzle. If the natural motion of the arrow would be to fly straight at a constant speed forever, leaving the Earth, and going out into space, we have to explain why it doesn’t, that is, why it slows and falls to Earth. So, we need to posit a force to explain its deviation from uniform straight-line motion. The slowing is caused by the resistance of the air, and, for Newton, the falling is caused by, of course, gravity. Gravitation became one of the fundamental forces in nature. But we’re not done, for in 1916, Einstein published his theory of gravity, which again redefines Natural Motion. Remember in an earlier column I discussed non-Euclidean geometries. These had been developed by mathematicians in the 18th and 19th centuries and introduced the notion of a “geodesic”, which is the straightest line possible in a particular geometry. For example, the geodesics DECEMBER 2021
on the surface of a sphere, such as the Earth, are the great circles, going around the Earth like the lines of longitude. The shortest distance between two points on the Earth’s surface is along a great circle, which is why a plane flying from Los Angeles to London goes over the North Pole, and not over New York. According to Einstein’s theory, the natural motion of an object is along a geodesic of the local four dimensional space-time geometry, which is determined by the presence of mass-energy. The Sun, for example, warps the space-time geometry around it so that geodesic motion is no longer along a straight line. Back to the archer. Now the arrow is in what is called “inertial motion”, following a geodesic, i.e., moving naturally, and so no force is needed to explain its behavior. Einstein is said to have “geometrized away gravitation”. For Einstein, gravity, as a force acting on objects causing them to fall, is a fictitious force. On the other hand, mass-energy does cause the local geometry to distort and geodesics to become nonstraight. But as far as a massive object exerting a gravitational force on some object, causing it to fall, that is no longer the correct way to describe the situation. So we went from Aristotle’s teleological explanations (objects want to go home), to Newton’s (a force drags things down) to Einstein’s (it’s all about geometry), and only Newton’s requires the existence of an external force. What I find most interesting is that the definition of “natural motion” is key to postulating the existence of a force. v Steve Humphrey has a Ph.D. in the history and philosophy of science, with a specialty in the philosophy of physics. OICE Louisville hosted an iconic fashion event and competition centered around Louisville’s best-dressed couples and individuals for many years. While the event no longer takes place, we once again couldn’t resist including Best Dressed as a category in VOICE Louisville’s 2021 Bestie Awards. The readers have spoken and selected Claudia Coffey, TV Co-Host on Great Day Live, as Best Dressed Woman and Jeff Hunter, formerly with Rodes For Him For Her and now with Glasscock/ Glasscock Too, as Best Dressed Man. Both winners, while fabulously dressed at all times, have both been in the local fashion scene for a long time, so it’s no wonder their show-stopping looks caught the attention of our readers! Congratulations to Claudia and Jeff!
