T
he new year is here, 2022. According to some numerology experts, the number 22 is thought of as the construction team building the foundation for the year ahead. We all want to hear about building hope and promise for that journey. Add the numbers together 2+0+2+2, and you get the number six. This intrigued me, so after researching a little further into the meaning of the number six, I found some interesting information. Being a ‘sixyear’ is a new direction, change and transition period. This new direction can be anything from relationships to career changes to relocating. It also represents love, family and partnerships. Of course, any given year can bring several transitions. We include in this issue the promise of what a wedding brings to our lives. May the six-year symbolizing the planet Venus bring to you balance and adaptability to navigate something magical, whether you are attending a wedding or planning your own wedding. Throughout this issue, you will enjoy beautiful photography along with superlative editorial content. Get ready to travel from the Peterson-Dumesnil House in the Crescent Hill neighborhood all the way to Rutledge & Vine in Napa Valley, California. Our goal with this issue is to offer you a glimpse into the possibilities of what weddings are all about. A peek at the gorgeous venues that are available and how to curate that special day tailored to your wishes. A little over a year ago, I planned my own wedding to one very special Viking. While planning all the details, we finally let our stress go with a sigh of relief when we realized we just wanted to have a fun day. Looking back on that day, I can honestly say we had one heck of a shindig as we danced the night away. Thank you to our loyal readers and advertisers that continue to support what we do month after month. I encourage you to subscribe at voice-tribune.com to have a copy delivered to your doorstep every month. v Mazel tov!

fter what seemed like a never-ending year, I hope we can all step into 2022 with a humbling perspective. As Janice mentioned in her Publisher’s Note, this year is a ‘six-year’ symbolizing new direction and change, representing love, family and partnerships. In the spirit of this theme, I thought it would be appropriate to have my first editor’s letter of 2022 shift from its usual format. Not only to reiterate the evolving direction of the publication but to celebrate the two humans who inspire me to love honestly throughout all of my relationships - my parents. The pandemic lockdown fueled numerous closet purges in the Hepfinger household. Of course, when my mom and I pulled out her wedding gown, all organization projects came to a halt for an impromptu fashion show. The long satin Cathedral length train, detailed trim lace, delicate beaded bustier, and let’s not forget, the Princess Diana worthy shoulders fit me like a glove! The 80s style drama so tickled us, yet the beautiful silhouette of her gown remains timeless. Naturally, this led to texts and FaceTime calls to her childhood best friends that stood at the wedding. Three of them got married in the same year, so they all wore the same fuschia bridesmaids’ dresses and satin pumps. They were fashionably sustainable before it was trendy! When we started mapping out the Wedding issue and bridal fashion editorial, I immediately knew I wanted to wear my mom’s wedding dress for my editor’s photo. After a 15 hour day on set at The Bellwether Hotel filled with beading, lace and tulle galore, I slipped on her gown, and Andrea captured my personality in two frames. My obsession with black leather Chuck Taylors is inspired by my rock n’ roll loving daddy. It wasn’t until I pulled out my parents’ old wedding photos that I realized why I gravitated to shooting

eporting to you live from the very top of 2021, this was one marathon photoshoot, combining our cover with this issue’s fashion editorial. With just under twenty gowns - to say nothing of veils - Alex and Andrea were wrangling swathes of snowy gowns from the crack of dawn. The Bellwether Hotel offered us a retro glam setting for all of the looks, and the wedding suite was perfect for our base of operations.
The second I arrived on the scene, Alex pointed me at the rhinestones and gave me orders to start glamming it up! For a lot of this shoot, I was sitting on the floor behind the couch, quietly hot glueing sequins on a blowdryer, to the sounds of Kathryn’s electro swing playlist. With all hands on deck, it started to feel pretty festive, not unlike the prep for a real wedding. Even our NYCbased Graphic Designer, Lane Levitch, phoned in to see the shoot in action. We made a day of it, and then it was time to turn all of our teamwork into the magazine you’re holding, which is harder than it sounds when you have so many great shots to choose from! Weddings are steeped in tradition, but as someone who rocked a starry gown and a mohawk on their big day, I’m a big believer in individuality. Put your own twist on the ceremony! That was my driving inspiration when laying out this cover; a little touch of rock and roll lavender brought it to life, and with the elegant polish of our fearless leader JCLH, we’ve concocted something that really stands out. You’re holding the culmination of a huge amount of man hours and teamwork, but we have a lot of fun making it happen. I hope you enjoy it, and find a way to add your own style to 2022!

Rutledge & Vine
Featuring fourth generation winemaker Rob Mondavi, Jr. By ROB MONDAVI, JR. Photos provided by RUTLEDGE & VINE JANUARY 2022
s a winemaker and vintner, the art of hospitality, providing a sense of welcome and entertaining is part of my ethos. Crafting wines and curating events with the simple goal of allowing guests, family and friends to feel special makes me feel great. The time and detail that goes into that perfect event and experience can often be daunting. Selecting the wines and food pairings can sometimes feel terrifying, but it doesn’t have to be. My wife Lydia and I created Rutledge & Vine Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon to express our marriage together. Lydia’s family, Rutledge, traces roots to the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Mine helped to found the American and Napa Valley wine community. We love the farming of the vines and the transformation from the grape into an exceptional world-class wine. Having only four to six barrels per vintage, we sign and number each bottle as our wine is a modern expression of old-world craftsmanship. Together, Lydia and I, along with our young boys (6 and 10), tend to the vineyards, fermentation and aging regime, making this a genuinely handcrafted bespoke wine. The hand-applied pewter band on the bottleneck is a ring representing that marriage and life together. I clearly remember writing the menu for our wedding just over 20 years ago and was astounded that it was stressing me out. I had written hundreds of menus and paired thousands of wines, yet this was different as I intimately knew everyone and wanted each of them to be happy. After much stress, we decided that the wine and menu needed to reflect the event’s theme instead of writing a menu and selecting wines that would benignly placate and hopefully moderately please all. Finally, I surrendered as trying to please everyone was unfortunately fruitless.

When Lydia and I decided that our wedding menu and wines were about our journey coming together, we could breathe again and write a beautiful menu that truly reflected us. (Don’t get me started on the seating chart and guest list.) Because the menu and wines were special to us, even our “picky” friends could find the joy of the menu and wine as they saw these were truly personal selections. This may sound a little selfish, yet truly it is not, as you are sharing something special with them about your story. Via the sharing, you honor your guests, inviting them to be a part of your life via a unique culinary and wine connection. The deck is stacked in my favor when it comes to creating wine and food pairings, yet some tricks to the trade can assure a solid win. Know your audience, America loves Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Hands down, these two tasty treasures are the most popular wines for a good reason.

They are delicious and can pair with a variety of cuisines. As a rule of thumb, white wines are served at the reception and first course, whereas reds with the main course. Chardonnay is a bit of a chameleon and is a bit trickier. The wine typically offers two distinct styles. The more modern and en-vogue style has a forward rich tropical fruit expression with lovely buttery and caramelized notes of vanilla and hazelnuts. Chardonnay’s counterpart is a more reserved or classic style that presents brighter flavors of crisp apples and Asian pear with the aromas of a subtle apple tartan. Unfortunately, you need to read the tasting notes or taste the wine to know which camp any given Chardonnay falls. Both styles of Chardonnay are lovely, and here is how we match them up with a menu. The classically crisp Chardonnay style pairs well with dishes that have more acidity and spice, such as Grilled quail salad with pomegranate seeds tossed with a shallot mustard
vinaigrette, a shrimp salad with Champagne vinaigrette, a classic Crab Louie, green papaya salad with lemongrass shrimp, Ahi tuna atop sesame crackers wasabi cream with ponzu, caviar and potato chips and of course decadent crab cakes. The more modern style of Chardonnay, with its decadent opulence, pairs beautifully with more decadent foods with a bit of perceived sweetness. Such as butternut squash soup, sweet corn tamales, smoked salmon, beet and goat cheese salads, pate, tuna tartare, duck confit and crab cakes. Some dishes meet in the middle between the two Chardonnay styles: carpaccio, Caesar salad, salad Lyonnaise, crab cakes, French onion soup, fritto misto, duck with brown butter sauce, clever butternut ravioli with brown butter, agnolotti with mushrooms, Sicilian caponata, a delicious comfortable tomato sauce-based dish across many genres of cuisine, and of course countless other culinary delights. Where I see pairing problems is when there is too much contrast. Remember when you were a kid, and you were enjoying your delicious orange juice? But what happened to that OJ after a bite of pancakes and syrup? Well, the same sensory impact can occur when you have a dish such as a butternut squash soup and a classically fresh and crisp Chardonnay. The inverse is where a high acid ceviche and a modern tropical buttery Chardonnay will also clash. Match the wines to the vibe of the food, more decadent cuisine with a modern buttery Chardonnay and more fresh and acidic dishes with classic crisp Chardonnay.

Fortunately, wine pairings with Cabernet Sauvignon are more accessible. While there are many styles of Cabernet Sauvignon, the varietal itself tends to pair easier with more dishes that are typically categorized as entrees or main courses. It is easy to say that nearly any protein or earthy mushroom that has met the grill or high heat searing is a candidate for Cabernet. Let’s delve into delightful pairings with Cabernet Sauvignon that excites chefs and intrigues the patrons, like Osso Bucco. Classic bolognese, lamb shanks over polenta, Moroccan style lamb tagine with saffron and exotic spices, a classic wood-fired or pan-seared steak, seared salmon with hearty tomato olive and garlic sauce and a winter favorite of mine a rustic Cioppino. While Cabernet Sauvignon can complement many dishes, there are delicate dishes and flavor profiles that we shall respectfully remove as likely candidates for a successful pairing: trout almandine, sole meunière, soft shell crab, lobster, oysters and others of this style. We now must turn our attention to how we choose the specific wine and winery for our dining pleasure. At a restaurant, my friends love to hand me the wine list, alleviating the stress of picking out the wine in front of their friends and their winemaker buddy. Although I know many of the wines, a wine list offers the opportunity for exploration and discovery. The best explorers always had a local guide, and when exploring a wine list, the Sommelier is your guide. Sommeliers have dedicated their lives to creating memorable wine and food experiences. Share the styles you prefer and dislike and provide a price range where you are comfortable. With these tips, I have always had a great experience.

When selecting wines for your wedding, you have the advantage of advanced planning. Before formally meeting with the venue, sketch your menu and desired wine selection. Communicate your lists to the venue well before the meeting and ask them to provide a quote. For budgeting, assume that wines at a restaurant or wedding venue are a 3x multiple of retail. Most wines are available nationwide, and with a little advanced planning, the venue will be able to obtain precisely what you want. Don’t feel pressured to buy into a preset wine list. Acquiring new items from the alcohol distributors is as easy as an Amazon order. If you desire to order from the venue’s wine list, it is acceptable to request a tasting of these wines. When you pick your wine, take a bottle home and see how it tastes over dinner. Trust your palette. My favorite picks for the 2022 wedding season are Charles Heidsieck Champagne with remarkable flavors of fresh apples and quince and stunningly tiny bubbles perfect for a reception. For Chardonnay, our Emblem Chardonnay offers flavors of Honey Crisp apples and wonderful Asian pears with subtle toffee aromatics. The Emblem Cabernet Sauvignon is beautifully textured, medium-bodied and brimming with delicious classical dark berry flavors. For the head table, I would select our Rutledge & Vine Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. We craft only four to six barrels of this most precious bespoke wine each
year. The texture of fine silk with wonderful black cherries and dark chocolate balances the aromatics of soft caramel and spice. When planning your special day, remember that this day is a celebration of you and your loved one’s journey. The event recognizes you coming together as a new and sacred family by your friends and family. The planning of this event should reflect you personally, from the decor to the wine and food. Make it personal, trust yourself and enjoy it. Cheers! Rob Mondavi, Jr. is a fourth Generation Napa Valley Winemaker, working in every aspect of wine. His passion is deeply rooted in the vines and winemaking. Rob and his family reside between Beaufort, South Carolina and Napa Valley, CA, where he and his wife Lydia raise their two boys. He manages the vineyards and winemaking for the family, and his affable approach, love of cooking, food, wine and entertaining places Rob as the consummate Vintner and Winemaker.

Naturistic Nuptials A closer look at the two scenic wedding venues in the Parklands By SARAH CARTER LEVITCH Photos provided by THE PARKLANDS
C
entered around the Floyds Fork tributary and natural landscape, the Parklands offers more than a weekend hike in the serene wooded trails, with two event venues that cater to wedding ceremonies and receptions. Whichever venue the couple du jour may choose, there is bound to be gorgeous scenery, both outside and in. First is the Gheens Foundation Lodge, their premiere indoor event venue. Located right on Floyds Fork, the Lodge has a sweeping wall of windows that backdrops the space with trees and stream. The Lodge can incorporate an outdoor ceremony and indoor reception with an event lawn outside, accommodating up to 300 people inside. Second is the Hockensmith Barn, a seasonal venue typically available from May through October, as the barn is not temperature controlled. After purchasing the land of a family farm to become part of the Parklands, the original barn was unsalvageable, so the Hockensmith Barn was built in the same style and location.

Though more rustic, the barn offers an authentic Kentucky feel with a modern touch, accommodating 250 people or less and only available on Saturday. Recently, pivoting in the face of the pandemic, the Parklands also began doing small park site ceremonies at select locations and will continue to do so in 2022. These site-specific ceremonies are ideal for a more intimate party of 50 people or less. Along with the unique natural setting comes an experienced, caring team that is available throughout the planning process to create a custom experience and make any necessary accommodations for each couple. As a donor-supported park, all the proceeds from the venues fund the park’s yearly operations. v The Parklands of Floyds Fork Beckley Creek Pkwy. Louisville, KY 40245 502.584.0350 theparklands.org

Start your new chapter in the skies with Crew Aviation By SHANNON WEIDEKAMP Photos by ANDREA HUTCHINSON
W
hether traveling to an exotic destination, a romantic resort, or a familiar vacation spot to start a new life together, Crew Aviation can help make it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
What are the most important things for couples to consider in planning their honeymoon travel? A great experience begins with knowing your travel budget. However, even with an unlimited amount of cash to spend, if your trip planning does not include knowing the potential restrictions and having the necessary documents needed for your trip, it can become a travel nightmare. If you are traveling outside of the U.S., you need to know the current restrictions at your destination. Not only are COVID vaccinations required for entry in some countries, but other vaccines may also be required or highly suggested. Yellow fever, malaria, typhoid and other vaccines are recommended in many countries and can be acquired at local health departments or your family physician. A passport is necessary for travel outside the U.S., and current processing times can be lengthy, so plan accordingly. Most countries have restrictions that your passport cannot be within six months of expiration. Check your travel dates with your current passport if you are in doubt. Travel visas may also be a requirement, and there may be extended wait times. With COVID restrictions changing daily, it is best to check frequently to ensure you have all the necessary documentation. The Crew Aviation staff receive updates for travel restrictions, health and wellness and safety/security several times a day to update our passengers before their scheduled trip. 50

What benefits does private travel with Crew offer a newlywed couple? Crew Aviation offers a custom-tailored experience where the couple can choose their flight time, destination, amenities and travel details. There are no TSA lines to go through, no ticket counters, lost luggage, or disgruntled passengers to encounter. Passengers can travel with their luggage and items they may want to take for leisure activities like golf clubs, ski equipment, snorkeling or scuba gear, hiking or trekking—truly the sky, and the baggage compartment, is the limit! On return, most purchased items can be brought onboard and secured for the trip home. Many newlyweds purchase items to commemorate their journey, and flying privately can easily accommodate a case of wine, a framed piece of art, or a treasure found in an antique or design shop that must be part of their home. The beginning of a new life together should be relaxing and romantic with a chance to make memories.
What are other special services offered? Our staff can coordinate a send-off party in our private VIP hangar with family and friends. Special items can be arranged for the flight, such as champagne, a personal wedding or honeymoon cake, a catered meal, or placement of gifts. We have an in-house travel expert that can book an entire trip, including hotel, tours, meals, ground transportation and activities. If individual services are requested, we can book rental cars, chauffeured cars or limousines, island transportation, including seaplanes or helicopters. We also have exclusive partners for luxury yachts, sailboats, or other excursions upon destination arrival. With a global network of companies and trusted contacts, we can help you plan an unforgettable honeymoon experience.

Can we add a Crew Aviation flight to our Honeymoon Registry?
Are there other options to consider in using Crew Aviation?
Of course! Typically, travel can be planned 12 months in advance, allowing plenty of time for gifts to be deposited for your memorable trip. We can help you plan a registry budget or set up an account where guests can contribute directly without the typical fees charged for most online sites. Contact us for limitations and restrictions so you can decide which method works best for you.
Yes, we can offer transportation to connecting locations. Perhaps your dream honeymoon is a cruise. We can fly you to the destination where your ship departs and return when your adventure is complete. Many times couples are given airfare or airline miles to travel. We can connect you to airports with direct international flights like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, or Seattle if you are flying commercially to Europe, Hawaii, Australia, or Tahiti. Whether we provide round trip transportation or link to your overall honeymoon travel experience, we always offer Stellar Service. v

Peterson-Dumesnil House A charming, historic setting for weddings

selling it to the board of education, who utilized the space as a teacher’s lounge. In 1982, the board of education declared the house a surplus, so the neighborhood raised funds to buy the property. Since then, the P-D House has served the
local community as a versatile event space. No stranger to hosting, the house saw the weddings of many teachers when the board of educators owned the space, a tradition that continued over when people came to the house asking if they could get married there. JANUARY 2022
Designed in an Italian villa style, the house exudes southern charm with a 16-foot wrap-around porch, a mahogany staircase that spirals up to the third-floor cupola, 14-foot ceilings and lush, diverse gardens. We spoke with Melissa Mershon, development director, who shared that on the property, there is one of the oldest Ginkgo trees in Kentucky, over 150 years old and 28 feet in circumference. These distinguishing qualities have made the Peterson-Dumesnil House a storybook-esque setting for weddings. Mershon noted, “It’s so charming. People feel like they have stepped back in time with all of the modern amenities. It has that feeling of being in a special place.” The house also provides couples with a variety of choices for the ceremony and reception site, Mershon explained, making each wedding at the P-D House unique. “We do a lot of outdoor weddings. People get married everywhere, from the porch that can accommodate almost 130 people, to our event garden that can house a 225 person wedding, to the intimate gardens for a small wedding.” On the day of, Mershon informed that the wedding party has access to the entire house and grounds, commenting, “brides like to come early with their wedding party, and the grooms and their groomsmen are at the opposite side of the house. They can all get dressed and celebrate with champagne while getting ready.” However, the house itself is not all that’s included, as Mershon added, “another thing brides like about our home is our catering manager, Clementine Events and Catering, provides full-service catering. They assist the couple in selecting a menu, rentals, music, flowers, tenting and decoration. Steve Clements, the owner, is a professional and executes gorgeous events.” For most couples who get married at the house, the wedding day is not the end of their celebration. Mershon noted that the P-D House hosts many anniversary parties, whether planned or more spontaneous: “I always walk up to couples to introduce myself and ask them what they’re doing here. They’ll say, ‘we got married here five years ago, and we’re taking anniversary JANUARY 2022
photos,’ or there might be a couple on a blanket with a bottle of champagne celebrating their anniversary. There’s undoubtedly a magical energy throughout the house and gardens, making it an idyllic place for these romantic occasions. Bridal Bling Davis Jewelers shares five different bridal ring trends for 2022 By SARAH CARTER LEVITCH Photos by ANDREA HUTCHINSON

T
here is an ebb and flow to all things, even wedding rings. Like we see styles trending throughout the years, some trends recycling back within a period of 20 to 30 years, there are various styles of wedding rings that trend. We spoke with Ashley Davis, vice president of Davis Jewelers, who identified five bridal ring trends for 2022.
Oh, So Fancy Shapes (top right) There has been an uptick in fancy shapes. Shapes do have an ebb and flow with time. Rounds are the most classic, and ovals are the most popular within the industry. Pear and emerald cuts are quickly increasing in popularity. All the setting styles are different, though. Any shape can be done with a halo or mix and match. These shapes do have a greater spread on the hand.
Hidden Halo (bottom right) Many women like simplistic lines like solitaire, and they also like the concept of a halo but think it takes away from the center stone. That’s how the hidden halo became a trend. When you look at it from an aerial view, you see the stone, but looking from a different angle, you can see the accent frame underneath. Some people call it a hidden crown. It’s a simplistic added element.
Mix & Match (above) The concept for many years was an engagement ring and a matching wedding band with the idea that in the future, the band will be worn on the other hand with an anniversary ring or something, the classic bookend look on both sides of the engagement ring. Over the past several years, the concept is still this layered look, but the bride can throw in the sense of personal style. If the client is afraid to commit fully to a metal color, they can add a touch of rose or yellow. It could also be the same color but mix up the scale or setting style.
One of A Kind (left) Our industry and brides have shown a desire for customizations. We can spin this two different ways. All the bridal lines we work with can be customized within the scope of their line. To couple with that, we do custom work for brides who don’t see anything in the case they want, or they have a sentimental family heirloom stone and want to incorporate it into something unique. The process is fun and engaging. We sit down with the client and walk through all the styles. We can help create a distinct look if the bride has a specific inspiration. v Davis Jewelers 9901 Forest Green Blvd. Louisville, KY 40223 502.212.0420 davisjewlers.com
Enhancers (left page) Enhancers have been around since about the 80s. It’s been called a guard and an insert, but they’re all the same. It’s the idea of having the band go on both sides of your engagement ring. Now it’s done in a modern style instead of a classic style. It’s for the bride that loves symmetry. The chevron or V shape is the most popular.

A Modern-Day Fairytale Wedding Dr. Maher and Dzenet Alia celebrated their wedding with over 220 guests in downtown Louisville By RACHEL PORTER | Photos by EMILY PETERS

ever be too scared to make the first move. If you do, you’ll either be rejected (and, of course, embarrassed) or end up with the love of your life as Dr. Maher Alia did. He was first introduced to his new beloved wife, Dzenet, over four years ago. After encouragement from one of Maher’s friends at the hospital he worked for, he decided to talk to her, and the rest is history. On May 23, 2021, the two celebrated their love at The Gillespie in downtown Louisville. It was indeed a fairytale, from the horse-drawn carriage to the guests dancing in the street.

A parade is something prevalent in both of their cultures. “The parade is when the party starts outside. All of the guests joined us and paraded into the venue,” said Maher. “Like the older village times, it’s an announcement to let everyone know we are getting married but also to welcome everyone to the wedding.” Dzenet wore a red veil and belt to signify purity and a sense of release. “It’s something very sentimental because usually it’ll be the closest male to the bride,
and mine was my father. It’s him giving me his blessing that he was ready to let his daughter leave,” described Dzenet. Although Dzenet admits her dress was the most complicated part since it took her visiting three states to find one, it turned out to be just right and went beautifully with the veil and the hijab style that held her crown. After experiencing all of the fun and traditions that occurred at their wedding, they both still said their favorite part was enjoying it with no worries. “Being able to remember my wedding and truthfully experience it was my favorite part. For how crazy weddings are, I feel like ours was stress-free that day,” said Dzenet. “I remember sitting on the stage and telling him, let’s just remember everything.” The happily married couple expressed they would not have been able to put and host this wedding together without their wedding coordinator Ms. Jackie. They equate the smoothness and steadiness of their special day to her. One of their tips for couples planning their wedding is to invest in a great coordinator because it makes it so much easier. However, they suggest focusing on other things besides the wedding itself. “Make sure you take time to actually enjoy your relationship instead of spending every moment thinking about your wedding and trying to make it perfect; just let it flow,” said Maher. Dzenet agreed and said, “Throughout the process, slow down and thank the people that have supported you and those around you because it’s so easy to get stuck in the moment.” The Alia’s shared that married life has been lots of fun. Despite the cliche, they are best friends and can’t wait to see what the future holds! v
The wedding was the perfect mix between modern and traditional. Since Maher is Palestinian and Dzenet is Albanian, they knew they wanted their cultures to be incorporated in every aspect. Because of all the traditions, planning for the wedding could get tricky. “With two cultures, it would get tough because there was a certain thing I wanted, so we had to develop a time to make something happen because he had his certain traditions, and I had to have mine,” said Dzenet. Some of the traditions included the wedding parade, wearing a red veil and belt, and cutting the cake with a sword. JANUARY 2022

espite the artists being generational peers, the two works are entirely different. Abram Tromka immigrated from Poland to New York City with his parents at age seven in 1903. He witnessed a woman painting on the boat to America, and he decided he wanted to become an artist. Upon arrival in America, his family took the surname “Phillips”—so some of his early works are signed with the name “A. Phillips.” Tromka had a troubled childhood and left his family at age 15. He lived at the Henry Street Settlement, one of the first publicly funded immigrant housing projects in NYC. His artistic talents were quickly noticed there. He was given art lessons and studied at the Ferrer School from 1915-1922, where he became a protégé of renowned American painters Robert Henri and George Bellows. In 1935 he was invited to participate in the WPA Federal Art Project at its inception. Rather than joining the program out of financial necessity, Tromka was asked to lend his artistic prestige. The Syracuse University Library holds the artist’s papers, including a journal of Tromka’s trip through the South in 1940. In the journal, Tromka mentions an earlier trip to the South in 1938, writing that he had “spent some time with the mountain people of Harlan County in Kentucky.” According to the description provided by the Speed Museum, “Old Kentucky presents that landscape. Painted in Tromka’s signature expressionistic style, featuring rolling hills, pathways and tilted houses and trees - all finished in a bright, vibrant color palette the artwork documents both a specific time, place and feeling.” • JANUARY 2022

lora Crockett was born in Ohio and attended Oberlin College, where she studied art. She moved to Europe through marriage to an Italian man, Edmondo Quattrocchi. Once in Paris, she took over as director at Fernand Léger’s Académie Moderne art school for five years. During her decade in Paris, Crockett exhibited her work regularly, including a solo show at Galerie La Fenêtre Ouverte in 1937.
As news broke across Europe of an impending war, Crockett divorced her husband and made her way to New York City, where she remained for the rest of her life, working various engineering and design jobs to support herself. Early in her career, Crockett produced somber work and, while abstract, not entirely non-objective. The Speed’s new untitled painting of 1941 shows geometric objects in
red, gray, and black colors along with what are visibly two smokestacks, one emitting smoke or steam. According to Speed, the painting “marks an important addition to its collection of early-to-mid twentieth-century art, representing a period when American artists were absorbing the lessons of European modernism. It’s a nod to the industrial and machine age of the 20th
century, and an artist’s view of an evolving technological and urban landscape.” v

hen Frank Pierce moved to Old Louisville, he thought he wouldn’t be staying for too long, but 10 years later, he still resides at the Central Park Lofts. Captivated by the charm of the historic buildings and the abundance of windows in his loft, Pierce decided to stay. Originally a commercial building built in the 50s, the space was transformed into loft apartments 12 years ago. We spoke with Pierce about his work with Douglas Riddle of Bittners and how they kept things simple to create a serene atmosphere.

What was the initial inspiration for the space?
What was the line between your vision and Bittners’?
I hadn’t told you that. I should’ve gotten that for myself.’
It’s a loft with concrete floors, concrete ceilings and exposed ductwork. Typically a loft has a lot of chrome, steel and glass, so we added different fabrics and textures like wood and leather. We gave it a warm feeling, and the monotone and neutral colors were soothing. The floors and ceilings are white, and the rest is browns, creams and blacks.
Douglas and I are good friends, and we have a similar design style. I wanted to get his ideas and float my ideas against his. It was an extensive collaboration. Anything I do design-wise, I ask Douglas because I think he’s very talented. I have a big table in the living area that is about 300 years old and wrapped in black leather, all worn. Douglas found that table for me. In fact, after I got it, he kept saying, ‘I wish

There’s the main room where the kitchen, sitting area and piano are. I have a corner unit, so there’s a lot of glass that wraps the corner. The back room was supposed to be a bedroom, but I made it my library/office/media room. That’s where I have my TV, my desk, my books and all

my personal stuff. I have a mirror that was a family heirloom, some artwork that reminds me of Texas, where I’m from. My dog and I spend the most time back there because it has two walls of glass, so it’s almost like you’re outside. We tend to sit back there when I have people over, too, because it’s so bright and airy.
What are some of your favorite furniture or decor pieces in the space? My desk is my favorite. It’s a Bittners piece, with white suede, a glass top and two shelves on the end. The other one is a chair. I have an unusual chair made of plywood that Douglas suggested I buy. It’s a piece of art.
JANUARY 2022
What have you changed over the years?
It seems like everything in the space is very intentional.
I added a piano. It’s an old Baldwin parlor grand, bigger than a baby grand. There’s also a table that’s a piece of a cherry tree trunk. An artist that lives in the building made it. It’s raw cut, and the bottom of it is stacked wood. Above that, I put a lamp that’s a column of raw linen. There’s no base or top, and it’s fairly simple.
That is true. Everything has some story or meaning. I have these snake skins on the wall from Texas diamondback rattlesnake skins, a box my mother gave me and a walking cane that was my great-great grandfather’s. If I have it out, there’s some reason. It’s not just here because it’s pretty. I surround myself with things that have meaning. v
Tell me about your bedroom. My bedroom is a study in white. White on white on white. Minimal. It’s soothing to me. I go in there to sleep. I don’t read or anything. When I did it, I told Douglas that I know it’s severe, but I really like it.

Taste the Love Husband and wife behind Marigold Catering Co. share their own happy ending By RACHEL PORTER Photos provided by ADRIENNE & KRIS COLE
W
hy does food always taste better when there is love put into it? Maybe that is the key ingredient for why Marigold Catering Co. has been a success in Louisville. Adrienne and Kris Cole, the duo behind Marigold Catering Co., fell in love over cooking and delicious food. The couple have been married for over a year now, and we could not wait to hear how their love story began! But, before there was the business, there were just two humans who swept each other off their feet. In 2015 their journey began as just two coworkers. “Kris and I both met at Mesh. He was the sous chef, and I was the house manager,” said Adrienne. “We respected one another so much in the professional aspect of the relationship that the personal relationship bloomed naturally.” In 2016, the two made it official and expressed they have been attached to the hip ever since. On September 20, 2020, the Coles celebrated their love at the De Lis Farm. “It was super small and such a beautiful service,” said Kris. “There was literally only family and a couple of friends.” What made their wedding special was how representative it was of who they are. Everything from the food to the DJ. Kris and Adrienne both agreed the respect they have for each other is what not only keeps their business together but, most notably, their partnership. “Kris’s attention to detail and efficiency are so impressive to me. It’s the respect on a creative level that he gives right back to me,” said Adrienne.

They also shared how the little, simple things help, too. Going on dates, making sure that you make time for each other and appreciating those moments with your significant other is what maintains that spark. “There’s an unspeakable quality that we have between us that neither one of us thought was possible; there’s that magical connection,” the two exclaimed. The Coles are a true testament to what real love is all about. When they are not working to provide some of the finest cuisines to the community, they spend time with each other and their family to ensure that they live their version of happily ever after. v Marigold Catering Co. 888 W Market St. Louisville, KY 40202 502.439.8979 marigoldcateringco.com

Louisville’s new and multiple Bestie Award-winning salon gives potential brides the key to confident and healthy hair

B
efore a bride can even think about walking down the aisle, they must not only look but feel beautiful. TRIM NuLu, the newest highend hair salon in downtown Louisville, shares some of the current bridal hair trends and their tips on how to ensure a bride’s hair is flawless. We spoke with the CEO, Sean Stafford and Louisville’s Best Hair Extension Specialist Katie Dunn to learn more.
When should brides start planning for their hair? Weddings are typically seasonal, the spring and fall. For that reason, planning ahead of time is essential. Once you set a date, book accordingly for your trial hair appointment and secure the actual wedding day appointment to worry about one less thing. It’s imperaMeghan Ogden. tive to make sure the color, overall look and extensions are just right. We have appointments booked for a year and a half out by now, and those days are locked down; therefore, planning is vital.

Alyssa Rydell.
How can brides prepare their hair to be the most healthy? We like to make a plan for hair health. We take it very seriously, and it is a part of our daily routine for any guest. We recommend proper shampoos and conditioners as well as using a heat protectant. Undergoing deep conditioning treatments and keeping up haircuts is helpful. It’s also important to make sure your hair tool is not too hot, and if you do have extensions, to not go to bed with wet hair. For the extensions, you want to use something that has plenty of hydration included since extensions do not receive nutrients from the scalp. As a Redken salon, we love the product One United Multi-Benefit Treatment leave-in spray that detangles, conditions and protects all-in-one to help keep your hair, extensions or not, soft and hydrated.

Alyssa Rydell.
What are some of the current bridal hair trends? Many brides still request an updo look, but it’s not as tight and harsh as some of the styles from the past. For those who do not have enough hair to get their desired look, extensions help tremendously. It’s an easy transition to caring for them and doesn’t change your daily hair routine. Hair extensions are a significant accessory, particularly now because of how the styles have evolved. In the past, all of the hair would be pulled up, whereas now, the boho style is trendy, and looks are more soft, romantic and loose. We also see a lot of half-up and half-down looks. Brides are also accessorizing with clips, combs and even fascinators instead of a veil. We are in a time where everything is in and goes!
How does a bride choose the perfect hairstyle to compliment their dress?
Kelli Hecker.
A sleek updo is a timeless option if the bride has a simple, classic, structured gown— texture waves or a loose updo compliment the boho-style bride. With a strapless dress, brides often wear their hair up to show the neckline or jewelry, but they decide to know what makes them feel best at the end of the day. Stand your ground for what you want! The only thing we highly encourage is not to make any significant changes to your hair in general that you could potentially regret right before your special day. v
