Morgan Stanley poll finds optimism, notes volatility

R

egional investors are optimistic about 2014, according to a poll from Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.

Recent volatility, however, did not escape notice.

The Jan. 29-released poll found 86 percent of respondents in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey expect their investment portfolios to be “better” or “the same” at year end; 84 percent believe their financial well-being will be the same or better.

“Parallel with a rising stock market, tristate investors expressed optimism about their portfolios for 2014 yet concern for stock market volatility — a concern greater than similar investors polled elsewhere in the nation,” said Bradley Barber, family wealth director and complex manager with Morgan Stanley Wealth Management’s Greenwich office.

“As the survey was completed in December, those polled certainly seem prescient based upon the volatility we have witnessed in the past couple of weeks,” said Barber, who also manages the company’s offices in Stamford, Ridgefield, Westport, Fairfield and New Haven.

realistic expectations than many investors outside of our tristate region,” he said. “While the stock market went up sharply in 2013, those in the tristate do not seem ready to simply take their profits and get out of the market. Rather, they apparently are using a little more caution as indicated by their preference toward dividend-yielding stocks.”

Manoni named hospital’s top vascular surgeon Westport resident Timothy Manoni, M.D., has been named chief of vascular surgery at Stamford Hospital. He will also continue as director of the hospital’s wound care and hyperbaric center.

Manoni received his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center. He completed his residency and fellowship in surgery at New York Medical College — Westchester Medical Center. Manoni also completed a training fellowship in vascular surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

He is certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and vascular surgery and is a member of the New York Medical College of Surgeons.

Locally, investors are most bullish about their backyard metro area economies: 83 percent said “same” or “better” for 2014, followed by bullishness on their respective state economies (76 percent), global economy (74 percent) and the U.S. economy (71 percent).

“It seems to me that Westchester and Fairfield County investors have more realistic expectations than many investors outside of our tristate region.”

Investors in the tristate region expressed greater concern for terrorism in the U.S. versus investors in other regions of the country: 82 percent locally versus 66 percent in San Francisco and 63 percent in Denver, for example.

Other top survey concerns included U.S. economic prospects (89 percent expressed concern) and the federal budget deficit (83 percent). Worry about the

trade deficit declined from 85 percent in Q1 2013 to 78 percent in the final quarter.

A potential U.S. debt rating downgrade that had 85 percent worried in Q1 2013 was not among the top five concerns in the latest poll.

Asked to classify investment prospects for 2014 as good, bad or neutral, investors favored dividend-bearing stocks (61 percent said “good” vs. 48 percent in a similar Q1 2013 poll) and S&P 500 index funds (54 percent vs. 44 percent in the Q1 2013 poll).

The tech, energy and pharmaceutical sectors were viewed more favorably in the poll than were aerospace and insurance.

“While the poll shows that there is plenty of fuel for optimism, there are some tempering factors for the state economy, as well,” according to Peter Chieco, private wealth adviser with the private wealth management division of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in Greenwich.

“Connecticut’s economy hasn’t just lagged behind the nation’s since the recession, it has also fallen behind those of all neighboring states except for Rhode Island,” Chieco said. “Some economists believe that Connecticut’s economy was dealt a harsher blow during the recession and thus had a longer road to recovery than those faced by New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.”

Inheriting the earth Women to control a lot of money

he power of women is growing along with their finances.

Not only will women control the majority of wealth in the future, but it’s likely they’ll spend it on empowering their own gender around the world.

By 2030 women will hold two-thirds of the nation’s wealth, which is expected to dramatically shift how philanthropic investments are made, according to PAX World Management L.L.C., which bills itself as the first “socially responsible” mutual fund.

Whereas men have historically approached money as ethically neutral and compartmentalized investments into moral, political and high-return categories, women are more inclined to take a holistic approach, speakers said at a recent event at UBS Financial Services Inc. in Stamford.

Studies show women are more likely to invest when certain social, environmental and governance goals align, speakers said, and will accept a higher risk or lower return on investments that produce positive impacts on society and their own families.

Therefore, as women’s control over money increases, philanthropy experts are urging women to invest in other women and girls, perpetuating the power of “the women effect.”

“What’s the challenge of moral philosophy in the 21st century, our century?” said Victoria Bjorklund, head of the Exempt Organizations Group at New York law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. “It’s women and how women are treated. This century is going to be defined by what we and others in the world do about women.”

Bjorklund was one of several speakers urging investments in women Jan. 31 at the second annual Women Inspiring Women philanthropy event, hosted by UBS and the Fairfield County Community Foundation.

Listing the brutalities inflicted on women around the world and in the U.S., like sex trafficking, genital mutilation, rape and denial of education, Bjorklund said there is something for everyone to do.

“In countries where girls are uneducated, women are marginalized,” she said.

“We know that that’s a very critical combination to turn our attention to. Those are the same countries that are mired in chaos and violence and poverty. They go hand and hand.”

But when women are given access to education and financial support, they’re likely to spend their money in ways that help their families, community and society.

“By investing in girls and women, your results are multiplied,” Bjorklund said.

Globally women are expected to inherit 70 percent of the $41 trillion in inter-generational wealth over the next 40 years, according to PAX. It’s an opportunity to make sustainable investments, both globally and locally, speakers said.

Whereas American women have made great strides in equality over the past decades, women, including those in Fairfield County, are often less economically secure than their male counterparts.

In Fairfield County, women represent 57 percent of those in poverty and a wage gap of 72 cents, per every dollar a man makes, still persists.

Even when Connecticut men and women hold the same position, women are paid 5 percent to 10 percent less than their male counterparts, according to the results of a recent gender wage gap study.

Since 1998 the Fairfield County Community Foundation’s Fund for Women and Girls has awarded more than $3 million in grants to more than 50 organizations supporting women. However, officials say there is more work to be done.

“Collectively we can come together to make a difference,” said Fiona Hodgson, the Community Foundation’s vice president of development and marketing. “But there’s still a lot of work to do.”

here remain nearly three years in the Obama presidency, but a Jan. 30 Quinnipiac poll found plenty of interest in the 2016 election. The Hamden-based pollsters plumbed the warm waters of Florida for their latest insights.

“In the 2016 White House race, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie loses ground among Florida Republicans and in a matchup with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, while former Gov. Jeb Bush remains the top Republican in the state,” the poll said.

Clinton topped Christie 51percent to 35 percent in an early guess at the presidential race. Prior to Bridgegate revelations, in a November poll, Quinnipiac had Christie trailing Clinton by a 4 percent margin, 45-41.

Clinton leads Jeb Bush 49 percent to 43 percent and tops other possible GOP contenders in the poll: • 51 percent to 41 percent over U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida; • 53 percent to 38 percent over U.S. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky; • 52 percent to 39 percent over U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin; and • 54 percent to 34 percent over U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas.

Bush leads a hypothetical Republican primary with 25 percent, followed by Rubio with 16 percent, Paul with 11 percent, Cruz with 9 percent, and Christie with 9 percent — down from 14 percent Nov. 22 — and Ryan with 5 percent.

“New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie isn’t finding any sun in the Sunshine State” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “Bridgegate is having a negative effect on his presidential fortunes in Florida. Since Florida is the nation’s largest swing state and one of the early primary states, the numbers are not good news for the New Jersey governor as he tries to weather the storm from the controversy.”

Of the 78 percent of voters polled who had heard of the George Washington Bridge lane closures in September, 35 percent said it negatively affected their opinion of Christie and just 4 percent said they liked him more for it.

And said Brown, “Among Florida favorite sons, former Governor Jeb Bush runs stronger than does Senator Marco Rubio, although GOP voters are widely split on their presidential choices.”

Clinton dominates a possible Florida Democratic primary with 64 percent, followed by Vice President Joseph Biden with 9 percent and no other Democrat above 5 percent.

Florida voters say 45 percent to 35 percent that Christie would not make a good president, reversing a 45-35 percent positive score in November. Clinton was seen as making a good president by a 58-38 majority and Jeb Bush by a 50-40 majority.

he Business Council of Fairfield County announced the election of several officers to its board of directors, including a new chairman.

Reyno A. Giallongo Jr., chairman & CEO, First County Bank, has been named chairman; James Fitzgerald, executive vice president, Northeast Commercial Division of Wells Fargo Bank N.A. has been named vice chairman; and Pamela Elkow, partner, Robinson & Cole L.P.’s metro New York office, has been named secretary.

Additionally, Kenneth Seel, office managing partner, KPMG L.L.P.; and Janet Steinmayer, CEO, Appleseed Food Frontiers L.L.C., have been appointed to the board’s executive committee.

Of Giallongo’s selection, Christopher P. When McMahon and her husband Vince first started WWE, McMahon said the two managed everything while sharing the same desk.

“When you’re first starting out you have to concentrate on the everyday,” McMahon said.

But later as the company turned into a 700-person, global enterprise, McMahon said it was her mission to hire people “smarter” and “better” at managing the various departments than she was. That way, she had time to think about new initiatives and pour

“Companies teaming up — even three companies teaming up — this is the type of business relationship we can bring to our clients,” Zinno, 46, said.

“The ability to tap into that network is that special X factor,” DeVitto said.

The firm’s growth numbers are solid. This year it added 20 staffers via its acquisition of Newton, Mass.-based Friedman, Suvalle & Salomon; and last year it acquired Sullivan & Co., a Rhode Island firm that added 70 to its roster.

Other acquisitions include Glastonburybased Scully & Wolf L.L.P; Nishball, Carp, Niedermeier, Pacowta & Co. in Shelton and with a second office in Waterbury; Fairfield-based Leask & Leask; and a 1990s merger with Hartford-based Cole & Frago.

Blum Shapiro’s accounting, auditing, tax and business consulting services target, but are not exclusive to, privately held and closely held businesses, government entities, schools and nonprofits.

The firm since its West Hartford birth 34 years ago has grown to some 300 customer-facing employees, of whom 152 are CPAs and 55 are firm partners. It was founded by Bernie Blum, George Kaplan,

Admitting she can be controlling, McMahon said she preferred the weekly reports to monthly ones.

“When you have great executives you can focus on trouble spots,” McMahon said. “See what needs focus and what’s next.”

“When everything is moving smoothly, you go to the Bahamas,” she said with a laugh. “Though, I’ve never been.”

Moderating the panel, Citrin Cooperman Managing Partner Mark Fagan said CEOs should take advantage of automated reports to monitor a company’s progress. Listing the different metrics to track, Fagan said he advises his clients to embrace technology to its full extent.

“It’s not sexy stuff when you’re operating your business,” Fagan said. “But it’s really what makes your company add value — having that statistical processing in place.”

Fagan’s column in the Business Journals, The CEO Evolution, was the inspiration for the night’s event.

To run a successful hospital, Dr. Votto said he recruits the best and brightest

doctors. But with success comes inflated egos, he said.

How to keep those egos in check?

“I try to make them as uncomfortable as possible,” Votto said with a smile.

“I tell them no one is indispensible and make sure no one feels really comfortable. When they do, they’re complacent.”

Votto, who has overseen $65 million in expansions at the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain, said he further motivates his doctors with regular promotions. When there’s no further an employee can climb, he then promises to work with him or her personally to find a position outside the hospital.

The result is dedicated employees with a shared mission of improving the hospital.

Emblematic of the laid-back tech culture, Austin McChord said he takes a different approach to motivating his employees, by empowering everyone to think as strategically as he does.

The company, which marked its fourth year of 300 percent annual growth in 2013, has a score board in the office of real-time company productivity running all day for employees to

By 1982, the firm billed itself as the largest CPA firm in the state and by 1987 it topped 100 employees. Its West Hartford office, its largest, now has more than 100 employees.

DeVitto said it is a Blum Shapiro goal to bring all the offices — besides West Hartford and Shelton they include Providence, R.I., and Quincy and Newton, Mass. — to the 100-employee level. Plans also include growing what are now smaller satellites in Westport and Boston.

“Our strategy for growth is to build on our current offices to become 100 persons per office, where West Hartford is now,” Zinno said. “We feel 100 offers us a depth and breadth of knowledge to serve our clients locally in the most effective way.”

Zinno said the firm regularly attracts talent from other large accounting/consulting firms and he ticked off a handful that would be familiar to even a casual observer of the regional and national business scene. He credited, again, the firm’s corporate culture, which promotes community involvement, as one reason for growth. “We live here, we work here,

we volunteer here,” he said.

Both DeVitto and Zinno stressed that Blum Shapiro’s broad client base and deep local connections lead to creative solutions and even to the union of clients to the benefit of both.

“It’s another example of Blum Shapiro walking the talk,” said DeVitto.

“We want our clients, the community and our employees to be better than when they began their relationship with Blum Shapiro. A culture of shared values gets credit for a lot of what we’ve done.

“Our goal is to create business environments such as we’ve grown here in Shelton,” he said. “We have one of the highest quality products a firm can have and that product is our people. We possess national experience and we deliver it on a local basis.”

In dealing with privately held and closely held companies, Blum Shapiro often handles business succession.

Zinno, who joined the firm in 1989, said that in that time he has seen a decline in what he termed “senior to junior” transactions. Today’s deals can involve strategic acquisitions and the availability of private equity.

“Forty-eight percent of business owners are considered affluent,” DeVitto said.

“And a big issue is the future of the company.”

monitor at their leisure. One of the few attendees wearing jeans, McChord said he regularly asks his employees for input so it’s not just him thinking about where to take the company next.

Similarly, Paul Senecal of Affineco, said he strives for a culture of inclusiveness at his and his partner’s cleaning and maintenance company.

In order to motivate his employees, which mostly consist of low-skilled laborers, Senecal said he tries to orient everyone physically, emotionally and spiritually toward the same goal of providing customers the best service. The culture is a big shift from the one his dad commanded at his cleaning company.

“They used to call my father God at work,” Senecal said. “He was a big man … all powerful. There was a fear factor to him.”

But rather than continue his father’s same practices, Senecal instead tries to communicate his expectation very clearly with his employees. His goal is for his clients to brag to their peers about how clean their buildings are, he said. His employees understand it is not about him, it is about pleasing the customers.

among its clients. As a rule, nonprofits are seeing diminishing money. Mergers — complete with their reduced overhead, better use of funding and economy of scale in purchasing — are a trend. “We’ve helped with these mergers,” Zinno said.

“But,” he continued, “it’s almost the opposite with private secondary schools.” The firm handles the accounts of more than 50, often prestigious, schools like Choate Rosemary Hall and Kent School. “They’re doing well because people sending their kids to these schools are more affluent and are not as affected by the downturn. In many cases, it’s tradition and they don’t want to break that tradition.”

Quest for feedback employees may speak more freely when the owner isn’t in the room. or they may play safe and keep silent altogether. dealing with employees is a never-ending struggle for me as a business owner.

When things go wrong i’m least likely to get honest feedback — just when i need it the most.

THOUGHTS OF THE DAY: Communication is a two-way street. Deal with the frustrating situations, so you can get them out of the way. It takes time and practice to build a culture of open, constructive feedback. Sometimes it’s hard for owners to accept criticism. Sharing

information openly with employees is a good start. Find a major payoff through idea sharing, collaboration, and engagement.

Most business owners are as uncomfortable with silence as anyone else.

They rush to fill the quiet spots, thinking people are waiting for them to provide information and guidance. Could be that people are only waiting for a pause so they can get a suggestion in edgewise.

Make sure that you allow employees to put in their two cents. Look the person you’re talking to in the eye. Practice patient stillness. You’ll find it only takes a few seconds for someone else to jump into the discussion.

Acknowledge that you heard what someone had to say by playing it back.

Try repeating the last word as a question. Or, ask them to keep going, to clarify, to expand on the thought. Do it with a smile and a nod of the head.

Recognize that because you’re the boss, people need to be encouraged to speak up. And they need to know that if they express an opinion, they won’t get in trouble for it. If you don’t like what someone has to say, bite your lip instead of snapping back with a contradiction.

Sleep on it before responding.

Ever felt stuck, frustrated, unwilling to get on board with something?

Be honest with yourself. It’s a common reaction.

Without an opportunity to have a say, it’s hard to be in a positive frame of mind. It’s normal to want to walk away and not be involved. That happens to employees all the time, as they wish to be heard and get frustrated when they’re not.

Reading about South Africa’s experiment with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, led me to some observations about how to engage people in working through difficult circumstances. Encourage accurate and complete sharing of information; impartial conduct of hearings when problems arise; accountability; inclusion of all parties

in economic advancement and political power sharing; and follow up designed to move people from airing grievances to planning a way forward together.

Share examples of when employees told you not to do something and they were right. Talk about how their taking a risk to stand up to you helped the company to succeed. Show people you can accept being wrong.

Make it safe for people to bring issues forward by allowing them to be heard without rebuttal. Practice saying thank you when the news delivered is critical, even when you don’t think it’s well deserved. If the employee is wrong, take them aside and discuss the issue one-on-one.

Speak to employees as grownups.

Treat each person with respect, honesty and dignity. Give them information they need to do their jobs. Let them sort out the details and learn from their mistakes.

There are significant payoffs to the company for getting employees to provide honest and open feedback. Here are just a few examples: lower turnover, better payoff for training budgets, higher output for similar paychecks.

Employees who are heard are more likely to engage and collaborate.

Recognition for speaking up reinforces the behavior, leading to greater degrees of risk-taking contribution. People start looking for the next opportunity to step up, going from avoidance to garnering additional recognition.

Cloud emerges from out of the mists

here is a lot of hype around cloud computing: It will save tons of money; it is easy to put in place; it gives you capabilities you would not otherwise afford. Given all the hype, it is important to define what cloud computing is and its potential for the small or midsized company.

Cloud computing means that another company provides the IT services you need to run your business. The cloud computing company runs your hardware and software, giving you additional bandwidth to focus on delivering value to customers. Cloud computing is like a utility that everyone uses without owning the physical assets. And, like a utility, with cloud, you pay only for what you use.

With cloud computing, everyone uses the equipment and software provided by the cloud computing vendor without the capital investment. You no longer need to buy that server or that piece of software and you don’t need the staff to maintain it. You are able to leverage another company with extensive expertise in technology that manages all of this as a service.

You benefit from the economies of scale, saving money and time.

Cloud computing is especially important to small businesses and startups, because it allows a company to avoid the initial capital investment in hardware and software, which was so often a barrier to entry. In addition, cloud computing offers the ability to quickly scale up or down, whether that need is driven from seasonal demands, the state of the economy or a successful growth strategy. It also gives companies the transparency and predictability around technology costs to plan more effectively, both in the short term and the long term.

The opportunities are significant.

Imagine two companies that decide to merge to pursue a new product line.

Imagine how easy it would be to complete that company merger and not have the headaches of extensive system integration, because the companies are using cloud services from the same “utility.”

Think about how you could spur innovation if you had the ability to prototype a new customer service for a specific target market in weeks, not months. Instead of engaging that service tech to install accounting software on your laptop, you just subscribe to a billing service or a check-writing service through a financial institution, based on your specific needs.

You worry much less about technology and more about running your business.

Examples of strong cloud computing opportunities are everywhere. If you

If you want your HR department to be able to more effectively manage human capital resources, sign up for WorkDay. All of this automation is available through cloud computing. You can sign up, pay a monthly fee like a monthly magazine subscription and also cancel the subscription in the same way when the software or service is no longer needed.

Most companies we talk to today are trying to understand what is possible and what makes good business sense. We find some businesses are resisting cloud computing, while others are aggressively moving servers, storage, email, collaboration tools, applications and complete data centers to the cloud.

There are risks. What happens if the cloud provider’s computing capabilities are not available? What happens to my ability to pay my staff or my suppliers or engage with my customers?

Not only are there trust issues, but you need guarantees around data protection, availability of computing resources and that your cloud provider has the capability to deliver, regardless of circumstance like geography, disasters or geo-political challenges. And in validating those costsavings claims for the cloud, the total cost needs to be less than what you would have paid using traditional means.

Cloud computing has changed everyone’s world. You watch TV program episodes via the cloud; you access Facebook; you engage with networks and communi-

ties that were inaccessible just a few years ago, all via the cloud.

Those who want to leverage the benefits of cloud computing for their businesses need to carefully select cloud providers. Your competitors and the next great startups are looking to the cloud to expand business, reduce costs and exploit the many positive opportunities afforded by the cloud.

State prograM SeeKS to Up ManUfaCtUring

ov. Dannel P. Malloy proposed plans Jan. 29 to create a $25 million advanced manufacturing fund to help companies modernize, grow, train employees and develop new technologies.

Manufacturers such as Boeing, Airbus and United Technologies Corp. are expected to aggressively increase production schedules and the state’s aerospace supply chain needs to prepare to nearly double its capacity, Malloy said.

“Although Connecticut’s manufacturers are among the best at what they do, a major ramp-up in production activity could pose a challenge for our smaller producers,” Malloy said in a written statement.

The fund would start with an initial $25 million investment and would be used to attract new companies to the state, he said. As of press time, Malloy was

expected to propose the legislation during the upcoming session, which began Feb. 5.

Manufacturing represents 10.5 percent of the gross state product, exceeding $24 billion in revenue, and employs roughly 10 percent of the state’s population.

“This fund is the answer,” Malloy said.

“It is a long-term commitment that will usher in a new era of innovation and economic growth; one that promises to bring skilled manufacturing jobs back to the state and solidify our place as a world-wide leader in advanced manufacturing for generations to come.”

Though military contracts are expected to decrease over the next decade as the nation wraps up its wars, United Technologies Corp. and other aerospace manufacturers say they plan to increase consumer-based orders to make up the difference.

At Pratt & Whitney, a UTC subsidiary based in East Hartford, engine produc-

tion is expected to decrease through 2015.

But by 2017 sales are expected to exceed 2012 levels with further growth into 2020, due to more than 5,000 orders for the company’s PurePower engine family.

Company officials plan to more than double engine production by the end of the decade, “rivaling levels not seen since the 1980s,” said Shawn A. Watson a P&W manager of operations and engineering communications.

“This will mean a substantial amount of work for our supply base,” he added in an email. “Here in Connecticut we have more than 80 product suppliers working on parts and components for our engines.

We value our supply base and need their support to be successful.”

Watson said the company welcomed Malloy’s support, mentioning the competitive environment it operates in.

“If the state can help manufacturers succeed, that’s a good thing,” he said.

Watson didn’t comment specifically on whether there would be a long-term need

for smaller manufacturers to double their capacity to meet P&W’s demands past its recent spout of engine orders, but reiterated the bright outlook the company holds.

“We’re fortunate to be part of an exciting industry that is both challenging and rewarding,” Watson said. “Our long-term outlook and the outlook for our industry is very bright. With a number of companies building new aircraft and with more than 5,000 announced firm orders and options for our PurePower engines, it’s clear that there’s lots be optimistic about.”

Malloy said the fund could serve as a catalyst for further strategic investments in the state’s manufacturing sector, allowing it to remain competitive and build a skilled workforce.

“Now is the right time for the state to make this investment to build up our core industrial capability and ensure we remain competitive in the global marketplace,” he said.

CT TO SPEND $10M ON METRO-NORTH POWER UPGRADE

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced plans Feb. 1 to invest $10 million upgrading the power supply for the Metro-North New Haven line to prevent future outages like the one in Mount Vernon last fall, which disrupted rail service for several days.

In a contract between the Connecticut Department of Transportation, MetroNorth and Connecticut Light & Power, CL&P will replace aging transformers in Cos Cob, Greenwich to nearly double the power supply and increase redundancies in case of an outage. “The New Haven line is the busiest single rail line in the country and, each day, takes more than 60,000 travelers off of our already congested highways,� Malloy said in a written statement. “In anticipation of adding even more service on this state owned rail corridor, we want to ensure riders have as safe and reliable a commute as possible and prevent the major system interruptions that we experienced in September.�

Plans to replace the first transformer began Feb. 3 and work is expected to take

16 days to complete. The second transformer to be replaced will be completed mid-March and act as a back-up emergency transformer on standby.

Malloy said he plans to meet with the new Metro-North president, Joe Giulietti, and the CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Thomas F. Prendergast, Feb. 13 to address additional concerns with the line’s operation.

CERVALIS EMBRACES NORWALK SITE

Stamford-based Cervalis, a provider of technology and IT services, has opened a 168,000-square-foot, high-availability data center in Norwalk, its second such center in the county.

Cervalis bills the 168,000-square-foot center as a secure facility offering colocation, managed hosting, business continuity and disaster recovery, and cloud computing services.

The site is near Interstate 95, the Merritt Parkway and “between Metro-North’s East Norwalk and Westport stations,� according to the company, which by policy does not divulge the exact addresses of its data centers for publication.

The facility features 75,000 square feet of raised-floor data center space (above the 500-year flood zone) and 30,000 square feet of dedicated disaster recovery seating with 16 megawatts of redundant electricity powered by two separate utility companies and 3,500 tons of cooling capacity (a ton being the cooling energy in a ton of ice across 24 hours). “Cervalis’ newest data center ensures business resilience,� the company said. “I am very pleased Cervalis has established such a unique, outstanding facility in Connecticut,� said Michael Boccardi, president and CEO of Cervalis. “This unparalleled operations center can serve as a primary production data center, a backup data center or a hybrid solution for firms that rely on active-active computing environments. Two of the Connecticut Department of Labor spring career fairs will be held in Danbury at the Ethan Allen Hotel.

On March 3, the general Danbury career fair will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and

will be sponsored by Townsquare Media, the Danbury Chamber of Commerce and the city of Danbury.

The veteran’s career fair will also be held at the hotel May 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Certified professional rĂŠsumĂŠ writers from the labor department will be available to review rĂŠsumĂŠs and offer employment tips and suggestions. Information sessions on free American Job Center workshops will also be available.

BUSINESS COUNCIL CELEBRATES EMPLOYEE HEALTH

Nearly 50 students at FAIRFIELD UNIVERSITY have spent most of the 2013-2014 academic year preparing for the annual business plan competition. Advice comes from faculty members and business experts, including BLUMSHAPIRO partner TOM WALSH and manager PATRICK DUNLEAVEY. The Fairfield University Business Plan Competition was created three years ago by the CHARLES F. DOLAN SCHOOL OF BUSINESS. This year, teams will compete in two categories: the venture track for new businesses with a profit focus and the social track for new organizations with a social mission. Each category competes separately with its own judges and prizes; a total $20,000 will be awarded. The fi nal judging takes place April 14 at Fairfield University.

How Do We Build a Brighter Economic Future for Connecticut?

onnecticut’s largest business organization is urging lawmakers to work together and use the 2014 General Assembly session as a foundation for boosting the state’s national economic rankings.

“If we’re going to add jobs, create more opportunities for people, and generate tax revenues to pay for necessary government programs, we must start laying the groundwork now.

In releasing its priorities for the 2014 legislative session, the Connecticut Business & Industry Association called for a multiyear campaign designed to improve the state’s business climate rankings and strengthen its economy.

“That starts with resolving the state’s long-term fiscal issues. We’ve made some progress—now it’s time to accelerate that progress.”

“State policymakers at all levels must collaborate in pursuing opportunities to nurture our many strengths and build a brighter economic future for everyone in Connecticut,” said CBIA president and chief executive officer John R. Rathgeber (pictured).

CBIA released a series of recommendations for boosting the state’s national economic rankings, built around six core steps: f Start. Tackle the biggest challenges: the state budget and long-term liabilities, business costs, regulatory climate, and transportation infrastructure. Continue making progress in education, energy, environmental regulations, and supporting small business. f Build. Capitalize on our strengths. Connecticut is home to diverse, world-class economic base industries, including advanced manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, and bioscience. We have a deep, productive talent pool and an ideal location for reaching the world. f Choose. Adopt positive solutions. Walk away from those that are not, weed out legislative or regulatory proposals that harm job creation and the state’s economy, and put our collective strength toward productive ideas.

“And it’s critical that all of us—elected officials, businesses, employees, and residents—come together and embrace the goal of moving the state into the top 20 across a number of national economic rankings by 2017.”

Rathgeber said that in recent years, the state ranked poorly in many nationally recognized independent economic reports, including CNBC’s Top States for Business and Forbes’ Best States for Business.

“Those rankings highlight Connecticut’s competitive weaknesses and contribute to an overall negative perception of the state, making it very difficult to attract the types of private sector investments we need to build a strong, vibrant economy,” he said.

f Change. Lawmakers should work with their colleagues, listen to constituents, and recommit to making the economy an immediate priority. That will attract and grow the types of businesses that provide good, well-paying jobs and excellent benefits, and support their communities. f Measure. Set higher performance standards for state government. Review progress; increase accountability; align agencies and departments and programs and services; and communicate results. f Commit. Make these steps a priority throughout all aspects of state government.

Rathgeber said national economic reports typically give Connecticut high marks for its quality of life, education, technology and innovation, and access to capital.

“We must address those weaknesses. If we don’t commit to improving our competitiveness, businesses will look to other states to invest, grow, and create jobs, further shortchanging our economic recovery.”

Those same reports, however, usually rank the state toward the bottom in other key areas, including economic climate, business costs, infrastructure, and regulatory environment.

While Connecticut made progress recently in a number of key areas, its economy continues to lag the national recovery and the economies of much of the region.

“Meeting this goal means a lot of hard work and some tough decisions,” he said. “By demonstrating significant annual progress, Connecticut’s economy can break into the top 20 states, just as Massachusetts has done.”

“This is not just a business issue,” said Joe Brennan, CBIA senior vice president for public policy.
