“With more people coming to the downtown you have more entertainment options, better restaurants and shows,” Salvatore said. “Stamford has grown by close to 2,000 more people in the past two years, and it’s because you can get a lot

W

hile hackers have shown they can breach the security of major retailers such as Target and Home Depot, those most vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks are smaller companies that may not have the most advanced technology or insurance to protect themselves.

“The theft industry is turning their attention away from larger companies and turning to small to medium-sized businesses because their firewalls aren’t as sophisticated, and they’re easier to hack,” said Michael Kaplan, senior vice president of Shoff Darby, a Norwalk-based insurance agency that serves clients who face cyber threats.

Many small to midsize companies don’t update their firewalls because they think it’s too expensive, but having upgraded software systems is what makes the difference, said Brian Doyle, vice president of cloud strategy at Trumbull-based Corserva. Forty percent of cyber attacks happen against companies with fewer than 500 employees, Doyle said. Forty-seven percent of business owners think if they get breached, it’s an isolated incident that will never occur again, he said. But a lot of times, hackers share information about the weakest areas to target for a future breach.

The Norwalk Chamber of Commerce, in an effort to educate small businesses about their risks, hosted a panel of cybersecurity experts in technology, insurance and the law to discuss ways to prevent damage to their reputations as well as to control liability costs.

The event was held at the Even Hotel in Norwalk. In addition to Doyle, the panelists were John Grise, vice president and partner at The Keating Group and Steven J. Bonafonte, an attorney and partner at Pullman and Comley L.L.C. Kaplan from Shoff Darby helped organize the panel.

In the last 15 years, cyber threats have become a widespread problem in the U.S. In the early 2000s, PCs became more advanced and popularized and companies began to give employees more remote access to their centralized computer systems, which further opened doors to intruders, Doyle said.

“Now hackers are looking for guys who sit at Starbucks on a PC, and the hacker could be sitting on that open network,” Doyle said.

“If their PC is not protected, it’s possible for the hacker to get onto their PC. Many people have network connections to their offices, and hackers can use this as a secure link that leverages access to corporate headquarters.”

Bridgeport basks in solar activity GOLDMAN SACHS OFFERS INVESTMENT MUSCLE

he city of Bridgeport recently came out strongly for solar power, with the mayor’s office citing a “groundswell of support for solar and fuel cell energy projects” at a former landfill site. The so-called Green Energy Park includes 9,000 solar panels and a 2.8-megawatt fuel cell atop the old city landfill. It has City Council and business community backing.

Paul Timpanelli, president and CEO of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, said the organization is a “strong, solid and avid” supporter of the solar project. The project has also received approval from the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority as well as Bridgeport’s Parks Commission.

“This project simply makes sense — for our future, for our environment, for our economy, for our taxpayers, and most importantly, for our children,” Mayor Bill Finch said.

The state’s Public Utility Siting Council recently toured the site. “Once the project receives Siting Council approval, it’s a go,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.

In a second deal, in July, PosiGen announced it had acquired financing for the installation of up to 2,000 systems in unspecified locations, potentially reducing utility costs by approximately $2.7 million annually.

PosiGen bills itself as Louisiana’s largest solar provider with three offices in the state, including its Metairie headquarters. Besides Bridgeport, it also recently opened an office in Albany, N.Y. It employs 165 total, according to a statement, and to date has more than 4,000 customers.

Established in 2001, the Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group invests “to help transform distressed communities into sustainable and vibrant neighborhoods of choice and opportunity.” It has to date committed more than $3 billion of Goldman Sachs capital, according to a company statement.

Trolley Barn stays relevant

A

fter 150 years, the 1864 Norwalk Trolley Barn at 10 Wall St. remains a hub of activity via adaptive reuse.

The trolleys are gone, but wooden beams, brick arches and outsized bolts still infuse the renovated property with history.

John DiScala, vice president and principal of M.F DiScala & Co. Real Estate Investment Bankers and of its management arm, Sedona Group Real Estate Management, said his father, Michael DiScala, now 72, bought the building 54 years ago when he was 18.

“When I was a kid I’d go in there and it was a mess,” John DiScala said. “But it still had character and my dad said one day this would be our office.”

M.F. DiScala began calling 10 Wall St. home in 1988.

The building now has 29 apartment units that include lofts, studios and one-bedrooms; 16 office spaces; and a restaurant space, now occupied by Tinto Bar & Tapas restaurant.

“My father made a real effort to keep the historic details,” John DiScala said. “Norwalk is strict, but we always wanted to keep the history. It gives a great flavor to the building.”

DiScala is currently marketing seven offices at 10 Wall St.

rstadt Biddle Properties Inc. recently bought mixed-use properties totaling 89,000 square feet in Cos Cob and Old Greenwich for $47.4 million.

The Greenwich-based equity real estate investment trust acquired a three-story, 48,000-square-foot property at 120-136

E. Putnam Ave. in Cos Cob anchored by a 15,600-square-foot CVS pharmacy. Its other retail tenants include Robeks, Domino’s Pizza and Members Credit Union. The property, which is 97 percent occupied, has secondfloor offices and third-floor apartments.

The company also bought a cluster of two-

story buildings comprising more than 41,000 square feet at 178-188 South Beach Ave. and 26 and 36 Arcadia Road in Old Greenwich.

The anchor tenant is a newly renovated, 18,200-square-foot Kings supermarket that replaced a Porricelli’s market last year. Other tenants include Dunkin’ Donuts, Panache salon, Chillybear, a delicatessen and a dry cleaner. Office spaces fill the second floors.

Stamford chamber salutes its city and its best

he Stamford Chamber of Commerce hosted its 27th annual meeting recently at the Hilton Stamford Hotel & Executive Meeting Center in Stamford. The awards luncheon attracted a packed house of 210 businesspeople and dignitaries, including Gov. Dannel Malloy and Stamford Mayor David Martin.

Armando Goncalves, senior vice president and Southern Connecticut Division president for People’s United Bank, and Chet Valiante, board chairman of the chamber and publisher and chief operating officer of The Hour Publishing Co. and The Stamford Times, offered introductory remarks. NEWS IN BRIEF DOWNTOWN GRANTS GO TO 13 TOWNS Thirteen municipalities across Connecticut — including two in Fairfield County — will share $5 million in grants to develop or improve their commercial districts.

Bethel and Wilton in Fairfield County are part of an effort to attract small businesses, grow jobs and improve pedestrian access and livability in town centers via the grants, according to the governor’s office, which made the announcement.

The grants are part of the state’s Main Street Investment Fund, which is administered through the state Department of Housing.

Bethel will receive $290,149 to improve the town’s commercial center. The project – to include new sidewalks, accessibility ramps, signage, streetscape and safety improvements — is designed to create a walkable and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant downtown by improving public safety and pedestrian access, creating a community gathering place and increasing recreational opportunities, the governor’s office said.

Wilton plans to put its $425,000 award toward the Wilton Center sidewalk restora-

tion project in the town center. This project, which will also address various concerns related to the Americans with Disabilities Act, will provide public sidewalks within the vehicle travel way. The new Wilton sidewalks will dovetail with already-completed downtown improvements such as the installation of benches, concrete roadway curbing, 75 decorative street lamps, seasonal flower pot arrangements and the 2010 completion of the Veteran’s Memorial Green.

“These grants are a great way for the state to support our cities and towns in their efforts to develop and improve their commercial centers,” said Gov. DANNEL MALLOY. “This program responds to the unique needs of individual communities all around the state by creating partnerships with local governments and merchants to improve aesthetics and pedestrian access, attract new businesses, new customers, and new residents – ultimately breathing new life into our smaller commercial centers.”

The Main Street Investment Fund provides awards of no more than $500,000 to be used for expenses such as building improvements, signage, lighting and streetscape improvements. Other grants in this round of funding went to

Berlin, Coventry, Farmington, New London, Newington, Norfolk, Pomfret, Rocky Hill, Seymour, Vernon and Windsor.

The event, “Election 2014: Polls, Pundits and Popcorn,” is billed as a forum that will look at key U.S. Senate races and try to determine whether Republicans will take Senate control or if Democrats can hang on to their slim majority in the Nov. 4 elections.

The program also will look at the battle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives, including Connecticut’s contests and how the results of the congressional elections could affect the last two years of President Barack Obama’s administration. (Republicans control the House now and are expected to hold that position after the election.)

Discussion of the race for governor in Connecticut between Greenwich resident TOM FOLEY, a Republican, and DANNEL MALLOY,

the Democratic incumbent and former Stamford mayor, is also on the docket.

The forum runs noon to 2 p.m. at SCSU’s Michael J. Adanti Student Center, Grand Ballroom. It is free to the public.

JENNIFER DINEEN, director of the University of Connecticut/Hartford Courant poll, will deliver an overview of the latest polling numbers in her keynote address.

A panel discussion will follow that includes GARY ROSE, chairman of the Sacred Heart University Department of Government and Political Science; LAURA BAUM, project director of the Wesleyan Media Project, who will look at the trends in political TV advertising; ART PAULSON, chairman of the SCSU Political Science Department; and SCOTT MCLEAN, professor of political science at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. Christine Stuart, editor of CTNewsJunkie, an online news publication that includes state political news, will serve as moderator.

A question-and-answer period will follow the panel discussion. Light refreshments – including popcorn – will be available.

How do we figure out what is the sweet spot for the customer? I’m always wondering, “Are we leaving money on the table?”

THOUGHTS OF THE DAY: Figure out how well your product or service fills a need versus the competition. Make sure more people become aware of how well your product or service fills that need. Just because it’s hard to close a sale doesn’t mean the pricing is wrong. Have a backup option that looks different. Pricing needs to be evaluated regularly.

Pay it forward by helping people get to know each other. Connect successful clients with prospects through referrals, networking sessions and specific, targeted introductions referencing how they can be useful to each other. They’ll have your company in common and can talk about how you’re help-

ing them each to succeed.

HOLD DEMONSTRATIONS. Carefully set up trials, ensuring that you don’t give the product away for free. Give prospects enough of a taste to have them wanting more. An eager prospect will be more likely to purchase at a higher price.

If a prospect balks at a price, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s priced wrong. Many times people will value something that seems just out of their reach because it is out of their reach. They see affording the prize as moving into another stratum.

If the product or service is priced too low and is too easy to afford, it may be assumed to have limited value. It’s not unusual to overlook a perfectly good solution, figuring something that good couldn’t possibly be available at that price.

Be prepared to wait it out when a customer negotiates by asking if you can lower your price. A smart customer will always ask that. It doesn’t mean you need to give.

Instead, reply that your price is your price and look them in the eye when you say it.

If you do feel the need to drop price in order to secure a particular order, make the discounted product or service look measurably different. Take something

away. The last thing you want is customers comparing notes and asking why one paid half what the other one did, with no appreciable difference.

Even at the top of the market, prices eventually need to be raised to keep ahead of inflation. Set up a schedule to regularly review your company’s prices versus the market. Reintroduce an old product with new bells and whistles. Think about raising prices in off seasons, the end of summer and year’s end, when customers are busy looking at their own businesses and less likely to inspect what you’re doing. Scatter price increases rather than raising prices on all of your products at once.

WorkPlace deploys employment platform HELP FOR 500 LONG-TERM JOBLESS IN THE FIRST YEAR

T

he WorkPlace Inc., a Bridgeport-based nonprofit workforce development firm, recently rolled out its Platform to Employment program for use across the state.

Earlier this year the Connecticut Legislature approved $3.6 million to produce a statewide program to specifically help the long-term jobless.

By partnering with the state Departments of Labor and Vocational Rehabilitation and

the states’ four other workforce investment boards, the Platform to Employment is designed to serve 500 Connecticut residents during its first program year. The first students — part of a statewide cohort of 125 — are set to begin employment-themed classes at the Burroughs Community Center, 2470 Fairfield Ave. in Bridgeport, by Sept. 30.

The Bridgeport effort is being duplicated in Waterbury, New Haven, Hartford and Norwich/New London.

Quest is on for remediation ‘best practices’ STATE IS RETHINKING THE FATES OF CONTAMINATED SITES

he Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection on Aug. 29 released “Evaluation of Riskbased Decision Making,” a report on remediation prepared by consulting firm CDM Smith under contract with the state.

DEEP announced it will accept public comments until Sept. 30 and will take the report and comments into account in formulating next steps in the multiyear initiative to transform Connecticut’s approach to remediating contaminated sites.

The report was prompted by a proposal in the 2013 legislative session to lower the thresholds for requiring “significant environmental hazard” reports concerning contaminated properties. Although a version of that proposal was enacted as part of Public Act 13-308, the General Assembly also directed DEEP to “engage independent experts” to evaluate and recommend best practices in risk-based decision-making for site remediation. DEEP must consider the resulting report and make recommendations for stat-

utory and regulatory changes, specifically including the significant environmental hazard statute.

The CDM Smith report summarizes the results of an extensive effort to identify best practices in risk management throughout the country and benchmark aspects of Connecticut’s remediation framework against those of other jurisdictions. The report attempts to quantify the comparison by ranking different systems according to “best practice attributes.” The end result is a series of six recommendations for further refinement of Connecticut’s approach to site remediation: • Reassign risk assessment to DEEP from the Department of Public Health.

• Establish a process for stakeholders to develop and present nonstandard solutions for brownfield properties.

• Document the basis for default remediation criteria and provide for regular updates to reflect evolving science.

• Adopt an ecological risk assessment and risk management program.

A new report “summarizes the results of an extensive effort to identify best practices in risk management throughout the country.”

• Encourage the use of advanced site-specific risk assessment for sites where default criteria may be inappropriate.

• Consider risk management goals for carcinogenic contaminants, based on the size of the affected population and the nature of the risk, to the “reasonably maximally exposed individual” of up to one in 100,000 per chemical and up to one in 10,000 per site.

In some respects, these concepts are highly generalized; in others, they represent ways in which risk assessment concepts

could inform regulatory decisions. DEEP will now have to assimilate them and translate them into tangible proposals – a daunting challenge possibly much more complex than the General Assembly anticipated.

At a Sept. 10 public meeting on the report, DEEP staff announced the department would take public comments on the report and its recommendations until Sept.30.

Public Act 13-308 technically requires DEEP to present its legislative and regulatory proposals by Oct. 1, but the comment schedule makes that goal impracticable. Indeed, considering what the CDM Smith report covers – and perhaps more importantly, what it does not cover – the January 2015 opening of the next legislative session seems all too near.

Kennedy Center honors ‘Dottie’ Larson ORGANIZATION LEADER ‘IS RELENTLESS IN HER ADVOCACY ROLE’

D

orothy Bannow Larson, of Easton, has spread a regional legacy of philanthropic work across five decades.

She will be honored at The Kennedy Center’s 50th Four Seasons Ball on Oct. 25 at Rolling Hills Country Club, 333 Hurlbutt St. in Wilton.

“The legacy of this truly remarkable woman should be applauded by the entire community.”

Larson is the Tribute Journal honoree, cited for “her dedication to improving the lives of people with disabilities and her generosity, shown both to the community and The Kennedy Center.” The Tribute Journal this year was overseen by Paul Antinozzi, of Woodbridge; Peter O’Connell, of Bridgeport; and Fairfield residents Betsy Browne, Susan Barrett, George Diffley and Patti Hiller.

Larson also will be recognized as a founder of the Four Seasons Ball, which marks its golden anniversary this year and is one of the longest-running charity galas in Fairfield County.

A black tie is optional and elegant attire is requested. A social hour with hors d’oeuvres begins at 7 p.m., followed by a full-course dinner and dancing until midnight to the sounds of Big City Swing. Ball co-chairpersons are Bob and Barbara Scinto, of Fairfield.

Larson serves as a lifetime director of The Kennedy Center’s board of directors and was a past recipient of the Kennedy Center Vision Award, “given to an individual who has the vision to elevate the human consciousness to believe in the potential of all people.”

Martin D. Schwartz, president and CEO of the Trumbull-based organization, said, “For over 50 years, Dorothy Larson has been a great supporter and friend of The Kennedy Center. In addition, she has helped make the Greater Bridgeport area a better place for people from all backgrounds, abilities and needs. Her philanthropy and leadership roles are legendary.

A Lot is Happening at One of America’s Castles The fall season at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum promises exciting, new programs and increased access to our communities. Generous support from the city of Norwalk, the state of Connecticut and private and corporate donations have allowed the museum to take some important steps toward universal access, just in time for a calendar of events that we hope will educate, inspire and entertain people of all ages.

The historical significance of the mansion is well known.

The mansion is both a National Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is regarded by experts as one of the earliest and most significant Second Empire Style country houses ever built in the U.S. Its significance from the standpoint of its architecture and history has led to features such as A&E’s documentary, “America’s Castles,” as well as many scholarly dissertations.

But the the mansion has also deeply penetrated popular culture: Recently “Glee” star Cheyenne Jackson was featured in a music video with the museum as its backdrop, the 1970s “House of Dark Shadows” turned the mansion into a haunted house, and it was seen by millions worldwide when it became the set of the sci-fi movie “The Stepford Wives.”

The museum offers weekly tours and among its fall programs, a black-tie gala Oct. 18 featuring New York Times bestselling author Steve Berry, as keynote speaker.

The Young Writers’ Competition launched in the spring will culminate when Mr. Berry will judge the finalists at the awards presentation the evening of the gala.

“Hidden Treasures from the LMMM Collections,” an exhibit of rarely seen artifacts and exquisite decorative arts objects from the Lockwood and Mathews families, will be on view, giving visitors a glimpse into the personal lives and styles of the mansion’s former occupants. Lectures featuring renowned speakers and authors, Halloween’s “Ghostly Sightings” tours, a magnificent and sought-after Victorian tea and a holiday exhibit will be some of the great opportunities for visitors to experience this iconic Victorianera mansion and National Historic Landmark.

37TH ANNUAL MEMBERS’ SHOW IN NEW CANAAN The Carriage Barn Arts Center will celebrate the diverse work of its strong contingency of current artist members in its annual Members’ Show. FREE CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERTS FOR FAMILIES This week, the Greenwich Arts Council launches season No. 2 of Curiosity Concerts – free classical music concerts for families in Fairfield County. Designed to inspire parents as well as their children, in 2014/15 Curiosity Concerts will present 10 free concerts at different venues.

They’re suitable for a child of any age able to enjoy one hour of music.

Curiosity Concerts producer Shelly Cryer says, “We were thrilled by the community’s response to our first season. We expected interest, but not one ‘sold out’ concert after another.” Cryer says, “We think season two will top our initial success.”

Curiosity Concerts opens Saturday, Sept. 27, 2 p.m., when the New York City-based Sonic Escape flute, violin and cello trio presents “The Music Makers.”

The 50-minute program — which debuted at Lincoln Center last December — weaves folk, classical, pop, Bluegrass and

sea shanties into a tale of how North America’s music came to be. The concert takes place at Greenwich Library’s Cole Auditorium and has been underwritten by Whole Foods Market Greenwich. It’s free, but advance registration is required.

Earlier in the week, Whole Foods Market Greenwich sponsors “5 Percent Back Day.” On Wednesday, Sept. 24, 5 percent of all sales will go to the Greenwich Arts Council’s Curiosity Concerts.

“In the year 2000, there were 2,000 units,” Ruotolo said. “Now we’re at 6,400 units, and we have another 2,200 coming up. The residential component adds to the commercial office spaces and restaurants and has been the key to the success of the downtown. The mixed-use is what caused the infill of retail and restaurant and entertainment.”

The boom in rental housing began in downtown Stamford about five years ago at the tail end of the recent economic recession. The market for condos and houses began shrinking because of the burden of home ownership, a mortgage and depreciating home values.

Every project I build, I think about what else I can do better to attract the next wave of tenants. If I was the only one building in downtown Stamford there wouldn’t be a critical mass here.”

Some of the projects Salvatore completed in the downtown over the years include 100 Prospect St., a $25 million, 82-unit apartment building; The BLVD, a nearly $33 million, 94-unit apartment building on Washington Boulevard;

Parallel 41, a $45 million, 124-unit apartment building; The Moderne, a $20-million, 58-unit apartment building on Franklin Street; and The Verano, a $20-million, 58-unit apartment building on Summer Street. He also opened “New-York style boutique” hotels in Stamford and Norwalk under the name Hotel Zero Degrees in November 2009 and April 2013, respectively.

Salvatore, who has a number of luxury single-family houses and town houses in his portfolio, said he plans to build more hotels in the region. He secured real estate in Danbury and is close to closing another deal in Westchester

County, N.Y. Salvatore said he plans to open them as hotels that use contemporary décor and amenities and provide customers a more personal experience. He added that he can’t disclose the locations nor divulge whether they will open as Hotel Zero Degrees or as a completely different brand.

Morgan Stanley finds the haves contented TRISTATE REGION INVESTORS CRITICAL OF LOCAL ECONOMIES

A

raft of statistics from Morgan Stanley, with investment offices in Stamford and Greenwich and in Purchase, N.Y., paint a picture of financial strength among the tristate region’s high-net-worth individuals with nearly nine in 10 planning to stay put.

Yet, in a region internationally known for seemingly entire towns of high-net-worth families, local economies were viewed less favorably than their national counterparts by 9 percentage points.

The survey said, “Despite the generally high taxes on income, property and retail purchases in the New York metropolitan region, the vast majority (89 percent) of the area’s high-net-worth investors have not changed, nor have they started the process to change, their state of residence for the purpose of reducing their tax burden.

The Morgan Stanley Wealth Management Survey found widespread confidence, say-

ing, “Amidst continued strong performance by the U.S. stock market, 71 percent of highnet-worth investors nationally surveyed believe the U.S. economy will be the same or better 12 months from now and 87 percent nationally have a similar outlook for their local economy. In the tristate region (New York City metropolitan area, New Jersey and Connecticut), those figures are higher with respect to the national economy (77 percent), but lower with respect to the local economy (78 percent).

Citing national data that show only 15 percent of workers have reached their planned retirement benchmarks, Morgan Stanley said, nonetheless, 82 percent of workers regionally are comfortable with their retirement plans, in keeping with a national percentage of 85 percent.

Investors are bullish on the prospects for their own investment portfolios, the survey reported. Nationally, 90 percent foresee their

investments performing the same or better a year from now. That figure matches the tristate region’s 89 percent who expect their investment portfolios to be better or the same in the next 12 months. Seventy-six percent expect the overall investment climate will improve or stay the course.

“While investors clearly are feeling the benefits of two consecutive years of strong performance in U.S. equities, the debate continues over the length and durability of the current bull market and the impact and timing of higher interest rates,” said Gregory J. Fleming, president of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management and Morgan Stanley Investment Management, in a statement. “It’s no surprise, then, that two-thirds of high-net-worth investors say they rely on a financial professional for advice and guidance.”

The data showed 95 percent of Los Angeles investors are bullish, followed by 93 percent in Houston, Chicago and Atlanta, 92 percent in Denver and San Francisco, 90 percent in Boston and 89 percent in tristate/NewYork City area.

Regarding the regional economy, the tristate region’s 78 percent bullish rating for the next year placed it last among the survey’s reported markets. Houston was first with 96 percent bullish rating, followed by San Francisco at 91 percent, Denver and Atlanta at 90 percent, Boston at 88 percent, and Chicago and Los Angeles at 85 percent.

The global president of Covidien’s General Surgical Products business, Blazejewski acknowledged that despite the state’s talent pool, most of his company’s 40-plus manufacturing operations are located outside the U.S.

When asked what Connecticut would have to do to bring more of Covidien’s operations in state, Blazejewski was direct. “Promote a viable economy.

Minimize taxation and regulation.”

That was the message echoed by a number of speakers at the sold-out event.

“We live and work in a great state,” said Jim Torgerson, president and CEO of UIL Holdings, noting among other things advances in bioscience, aerospace, medical technology, and financial services that would not be possible without a highly productive workforce.

But, he added, “Our economic recovery has not kept pace with the national and regional economies.”

Indeed, in a survey released that morning, the state’s economy emerged as the single greatest concern among Connecticut companies.

The CBIA/BlumShapiro 2014 Survey of Connecticut Businesses found that while three times as many Connecticut companies are growing as contracting, and nearly half are adding new products or services, concerns about the economy run deep.

The most important actions policymakers can take to enhance the state’s business climate, according to survey respondents, are to reduce taxes, regulations, and government spending.

Robert Triest, vice president and economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and Donald KlepperSmith, chief economist and director of research at DataCore Partners, observed that while New England and the nation have rebounded to pre-recession employment levels, Connecticut’s economy has merely chugged along, forcing many employers to hold tight on hiring. (Connecticut has reclaimed only 64% of the jobs lost during the recession, while neighboring Massachusetts has recovered 169%.)

Legislative Advocacy Training for HR Pros “While we continue to recover from the depths of the recession,” said Dr. Susan Coleman, professor of finance at the University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business, “and we have a healthy mix of large and small firms in a diverse array of industries, and our educational attainment is higher than the national average, Connecticut’s job growth lags the northeast region and the U.S.” Coleman noted that Connecticut ranks near the bottom in several national business rankings, including the Thumbtack.com 2014 Small Business Friendliness Survey (which give the state a grade of D) and the Tax Foundation’s 2014 State Business Tax Climate Index (42nd place). Similarly, CNBC’s America’s Top States for Business study ranks Connecticut’s business climate at fifth worst.

“As you can see,“ said Coleman, “we’re at the wrong end of these business climate indexes. We need to educate our policymakers, legislators, and voters on these issues. We cannot let ourselves keep spiraling downward. We need to act now.”
