ew cameras in history have borne the must-perform pressure of Neil Armstrong’s Hasselblad, the first camera on the moon. That same pressure – including the Gs of liftoff and the airless, irradiated hell of the lunar surface – rested squarely on the camera’s battery. If that battery failed there would be, in nonNASA parlance, some explaining to do. The battery was a VARTA. It worked perfectly. The Apollo XI need for reliable batteries has skyrocketed since 1969; today, there are 10 billion battery-driven devices. While mixed martial arts (MMA) isn’t a done deal until Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signs the bill into law – which he hadn’t done as of June 12 – several of the sport’s leading promoters were already beginning to ratchet up lobbying efforts in New

Companies fly under the radar combating cancer BY JOHN GOLDEN jgolden@westfairinc.com

S

usan Cotten had timely news she readily shared with visitors to her organization’s booth at this month’s regional forum of the National Business Aviation Association at the Westchester County Airport. “We’ve flown 43,000 patients,” she said. “We just hit 43,000 this week.” The flyer was a cancer patient with nonHodgkin’s lymphoma for whom Cotten’s nonprofit employer arranged to hitch a ride on a corporate jet flying from the Los Angeles area to the Boston area. A former flight attendant for American Express Co., Cotten still is a frequent domestic flyer in her current job as patient transport development manager for Corporate Angel Network (CAN). On her stops, she visits hospitals to inform staff social workers and oncology nurses of the charitable service that CAN provides in arranging free flights for cancer patients aboard company jets with a seat or two to spare on their scheduled business routes. While in town, she also contacts the flight departments of companies to enlist their participation in a shared mission of medical philanthropy. It’s a transcontinental mission grounded and founded at the county airport in Westchester. Despite the turbulence of a recession and prolonged economic downturn and an accompanying storm of negative publicity over CEOs traveling in high-priced corporate jets, 652 companies have climbed aboard with CAN, the most in the network’s 32-year history. Bonnie LeVar, communications director at CAN, knows intimately that history. Her father, the late Leonard M. Greene, was one of three founders of the Corporate Angel Network. Safe Flight Instrument Corp. the company Greene launched in 1946 from his Yonkers apartment, has long been headquartered at 20 New King St. outside the county airport. LeVar’s brother, Randall Greene, chairs the CAN board and succeeded their father as chairman, president and CEO of Safe Flight.

The corporate hitchhiking network was the inspiration of Priscilla “Pat” Blum, a Greenwich, Conn., resident and CAN’s last surviving founder. A commercially licensed pilot, Blum flew recreationally out of the Westchester County Airport. Blum in the early 1980s was a breast cancer survivor who had become involved with the work of the American Cancer Society. There she heard of the difficulties that cancer patients faced in arranging and paying for air travel to and from their treatment centers. At the county airport one day, Blum watched as a nearly empty corporate plane dropped off a single passenger. “She thought, wow, wouldn’t it be great if we could hitch a ride off of it” for cancer patients, said LeVar. Blum brought her idea to Greene and another Westchester businessman, Jay N. Weinberg, the owner of an Avis Car Rental franchise in Mount Vernon. Greene had lost his wife to ovarian cancer and Weinberg had battled melanoma, and both were receptive. Greene, who had started his own charitable foundation, turned over its tax identification number to the startup network. On Dec. 22, 1981, Greene piloted CAN’s first flight, delivering a patient home for Christmas in Detroit after treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York. In its first full year of operation, CAN arranged 24 flights and had recruited 70 companies willing to take on a passenger without charge on the companies’ regularly scheduled flights. By 1991, the charitable network had grown to include 509 companies that carried more than 4,400 patients. “These companies do this out of the goodness of their heart,” said Peter Fleiss, a former consultant to Safe Flight Instrument and CAN’s executive director since 2000, when the network flew its 15,000th patient. With a marketing campaign driven by pro bono ads in large-circulation publications, Fleiss has accelerated the network’s growth in his tenure. He heads a staff of

seven full- and part-time employees and some 30 to 35 volunteers at CAN’s headquarters at 1 Loop Road at the edge of the county airport. The landlord, Westchester County, provides the office space rentfree.

“I think it’s great that it’s such a good idea that it stood the test of time.” — Bonnie LeVar, Corporate Angel Network

For participating companies, which include Purchase-based PepsiCo Inc. and half of the nation’s Fortune 100 companies, “There’s no tax benefit” from taking on a hitchhiker, said Fleiss. Many prefer to fly under the radar of public awareness of their aid to patients being treated or in clinical drug trials at about 100 cancer centers around the country. “They don’t want to promote their charity,” said Fleiss, “because of the perceptions about corporate jets” as fuelguzzling, revenue-burning luxuries of fatcat executives. “Companies don’t want to publicize that they have corporate jets.”

That criticism from the press and public was especially virulent in the recession and federal bailout of U.S. automakers and too-big-to-fail banks in 2008. “It clobbered the aviation industry,” Fleiss said of the recession. Manufacturers of corporate jets “had to lay off lots of employees... Corporations, some went under, some merged, some got rid of their airplanes.” In the credit crisis, some medium-sized companies were unable to obtain loans to acquire or replace a business aircraft, he said. “Since 2008, we’ve lost a lot of companies” from the network, said Fleiss. “But we’ve gained more than we lost.” With corporations cutting costs in the new economy, LeVar said, “It’s harder to get flights for us now because the flights are definitely going fuller.” Fleiss said CAN successfully schedules flights for about 250 patients each month. Yet it receives about 500 requests a month.“We still need a lot more to fly the other 250,” he said. “We need more lift,” said LeVar. “We need more flights.” “It’s a numbers game,” said Fleiss, “and the more companies you have, the more routes you have, and as a result, the more people we can help,” “We need more volunteers” to help with scheduling, calls to corporations, soliciting pro bono ads and other office tasks, said Fleiss. There are no income limits for patients served by CAN. “My father never wanted to be a banker,” said LeVar. “They never believed in checking finances. “I think it’s great that it’s such a good idea that it stood the test of time,” she said.

Business aviation chief sees rough weather ahead BY JOHN GOLDEN jgolden@westfairinc.com

“I

really do love the smell of jet fuel in the morning,” Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino proclaimed when welcoming visitors to the recent regional forum of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) in a flight service hangar at the county airport. Astorino was speaking as one whose previous career in radio in Westchester began as a traffic observer riding shotgun in a cramped Cessna plane. In his current job in elected office that jet fuel smell bodes well for employment and the health of the county and regional economy. “This industry is really vital to the local economy and entire area,” he told an audience seated in an event tent attached to the Panorama Flight Service facility. The forum drew more than 2,000 attendees who surveyed the booths and products of about 120 exhibitors and a display of about 30 aircraft parked outside. Astorino cited a 2010 study by the state Department of Transportation that found that aviation has a $50 billion economic impact in the state. About 400,000 jobs statewide are related to the aviation industry, he said. The county airport provides 6,300 jobs

“The challenges of the future are going to be more significant, are going to be tougher, than what we’ve seen to date.” — Ed Bolen

for area residents. A spokesman for the NBAA said business aviation in the county generates an estimated $613 million annually for direct and secondary employment alone. The county airport also helps officials’ efforts to attract companies to relocate to Westchester. “It helps, it really does, to have the airport here,” Astorino said. With the departure in 2012 of AirTran Airways as an operator at the county airport and with other fuel-cost-conscious commercial operators reducing the number of flights from Westchester, business aviation has accounted for an even larger share of

BUY sell

airport traffic. Astorino said the county last year recorded 74,000 corporate and charter flights, compared with 32,000 commercial flights. “We know that growing air transport generates jobs and pumps millions into all of our communities,” the county executive said. Government should not put a brake on industry growth with “burdensome regulations and taxes,” he said. In Washington, D.C., Ed Bolen, president and CEO of the approximately 9,000-member NBAA, has seen a “big difference” in the view from Congress of his industry since 2008. In the depths of the recession, CEOs

from the Detroit automakers were excoriated on Capitol Hill for flying in corporate jets to congressional hearings on a federal bailout for their companies. “Government officials are realizing that this is an important industry,” Bolen said. In increasing numbers they are willing to be publicly identified with business aviation, he said, noting that nearly half of the membership in the House of Representatives is in the general aviation caucus. About 40 percent of the House and Senate membership combined belong to the aviation caucus. Despite that sunnier outlook on the industry from Capitol Hill, “The challenges are only going to get more difficult from here on out,” Bolen warned. The cumulative impact of sequestration threatens the industry, which already saw airport tower closings and air controller furloughs in the first round of the sweeping federal budget cuts, Bolen said. In this “resource-constrained time” for government, said Bolen, “more and more ideas will surface” on how the industry can contribute more revenue to the federal treasury. “The challenges of the future are going to be more significant, are going to be tougher, than what we’ve seen to date,” he said.

Cuomo announces $10 million to modernize state electric grid

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the availability of $10 million in grants that will seek to improve New York state’s electric grid. The funding will be awarded to projects that will increase the efficiency of the grid and promote the use of clean energy technologies while reducing energy consumption levels and the cost to consumers. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) will finance the grants through the authority’s Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Smart Grid Program, which typically offers funding for research, engineering studies, product development and demonstration projects. The deadlines for submissions for the first and second rounds of funding proposals are Aug. 14 and Feb. 12, 2014, respectively. The willing applicants must help pay for part of the program costs.

VARTA —

and Indonesia and the bulk of the engineering takes place in Ellwangen, Germany, where 150 scientists and engineers work for VARTA GmbH, the parent company, with 2,000 employees in total. The VARTA Microbattery division has been owned by Swiss-based Montana Tech Cos. AG since 2007, but remains linked to the VARTA parent company in name and staffing. The new office adds a single sales position in the cross-county move, upping permanent staff – dedicated to sales, engineering, project management, logistics and accounting – to 20. William Flanagan is president and CEO of Varta Microbattery Inc. Palu has worked 20 years for the company. Companies such as Hewlett-Packard look to VARTA to deliver products that embrace three quantifiable metrics, according to Palu: performance, safety and cost. “We take the burden of power and solve it for them,” Palu said. “This enables them to

bring to market high-performance and safe products.” And, by all means, bring it on: “We are experts in designing systems that operate under extremely harsh conditions.” Microbatteries now drive medical devices, security scanners, industrial machinery and the 10 billion electronic devices that H-P estimates now populate the world. Hewlett-Packard teams with VARTA for the same reason as do Volkswagen, Caterpillar and dozens of other multinationals. “We work with H-P to enable them to reach their goals, providing them with the best devices so they can safely connect to the next 10 billion devices – it’s happening fast,” Palu said. “In a mission like medical field devices, where safety and performance are paramount, our reputation is built on quality on a consistent basis. These things cannot fail while performing their duties.” If they cannot fail, neither can they in the

modern world pollute. VARTA today makes all of its cells without mercury, the longserving toxic workhorse of batteries. VARTA batteries must function in explosive environments, in watery environments, even in the “cold soak” of outer space. Palu said large computer servers provide a VARTA market and an example of specific needs. “The servers function at 45 to 50 degrees centigrade,” she said. “Lithiumion batteries cannot charge above 45 degrees centigrade and cannot discharge above 65 degrees. Our nickel-based batteries can charge to 70 degrees centigrade and discharge up to 85 degrees (185 degrees Fahrenheit). Servers are an extremely tough environment for batteries and the system must operate for a minimum of three years without interruption, backing up data. Reliability is a huge factor.” Some batteries will be sealed into their units with task-specific gaskets – gasket work is contracted out – and must recharge themselves even while discharging. VARTA power sources run the gamut from its Power One hearing aid microbatteries – the most popular in the world, according to Palu – to solar energy caches that can outlast the darkness. In Europe the company is already engaged in a program envisioning large storage units for basements hooked only to solar cells on rooftops. “A perfect energy loop,” Palu said. One VARTA battery, the H2 cell, manufactures tiny clouds of pure hydrogen to propel liquids and granular compounds. “Even scents,” Palu said. And the future looks … powered. “H-P believes the next 10-billion devices are right around the corner,” Palu said. You could be wearing some of those devices. VARTA through November joins Swiss-based ST Microelectronics and Dallasbased Texas Instruments for the “Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup,” in which contestants vie in six categories, including sports and health care, to wire and power clothing.

I’m sure there’s going to be a rush to put on some shows in places like Hartford, New Haven (and) Bridgeport,” Williams said. In the past, promoters would look to states like New Hampshire, where professional MMA fights are legal and regulated, or states like Vermont, where MMA is not regulated but not illegal, for event locations, Williams said. “In New York, the loophole is that you can’t have a pro fight,” Williams said. “That’s one of the reasons why people are coming over the New Hampshire. It’s all sanctioned; it’s all legal.” The state Senate has sought to change that, voting four times to approve professional MMA fights in New York. However, the state Assembly has never followed suit.

A group of 35 Assembly Democrats earlier this month signed a letter urging Speaker Sheldon Silver not to bring a bill to legalize professional MMA fights to the Assembly floor for a vote. The “violent nature of the sport raises serious concerns about the adverse effect that legalizing professional MMA events in New York could have on the well being of our citizens,” the letter stated. Promoter Rob Haydak said his organization, Cage Fury Fighting Championships (CFFC), already has a representative scouting out potential locations for fights in Connecticut. He said he hopes Connecticut’s passage of a bill to legalize MMA could spur an agreement in Albany. “It very well could be the last domino,”

said Haydak, president of CFFC, which is based in New Jersey. “Any time a market opens itself up to MMA, the local economy and the state is looking at an infusion of millions of dollars. With Connecticut coming on board and then probably eventually New York, it reasserts the fact that MMA is a global sport.” Williams, of Gladius Fights, said the MMA community isn’t hurting for exposure, but added that a fight at a venue like Madison Square Garden “would be epic, it would be tremendous.” “New York is obviously a metropolis and it definitely makes them (promoters) upset that they can’t get a fight at Madison Square Garden, one of the most historic fight venues in the world,” Williams said.

Apollo-like results, powering items as small as hearing aids with pea-sized disks and as large as entire homes with rechargeable lithium packs. VARTA – the name is a German acronym – began in Germany 125 years ago providing basic alkaline batteries. The company today uses 13 different chemical reactions to store and deliver power, including batteries that produce a steady stream of pure hydrogen and others that can operate at low levels for long periods and provide spikes of intense power when needed. According to Julia Palu, vice president for technical and marketing and also an MBAholding electrical engineer, companies with a product idea approach VARTA about powering it. “The paradox,” she said, “is they want to devote less space to the power – tuck it in as small a corner as possible – while at the same time more power is needed. “More energy density and more power, lasting longer in a smaller format, and now delivering high pulses of power, too – how can we solve those challenges? The three things that come up most are: smaller, more powerful, longer lasting.” VARTA’s client list includes 13 car companies, 17 heavy equipment manufacturers, numerous medical device and security companies and even four large marine contractors. Its German-based corporate accountants cite annual sales of 400 million euros, or about $530 million. On June 12, the company expected to roll out its nickel-based rechargeable bicycle battery for the burgeoning “pedelec” market of battery-assisted bicycles. The move to 6,250 square feet of office space in Rye follows three developments: American incorporation 40 years ago in Ohio, a 15-years-shuttered manufacturing plant in Elmsford and a smaller office in White Plains. Today, manufacturing is done in China

MMA fights, where fighters are not paid, but not professional fights. In Connecticut, MMA fights are currently permitted within the territories of the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Indian tribes, but not in the remainder of the state. Gladius Fights, an MMA promoter based in Ithaca, is organizing a professional MMA event in Berlin, N.H., later this month. Greg Williams, a co-promoter for the event, predicted there would be a “quick rush to put MMA fights on in Connecticut.” “Now that Connecticut has opened up,

It’s true. When doctors become successful, they move to the suburbs.

Who can blame them? Westchester has charming town squares, top-tier school districts and one-of-a-kind homes. But if you’re a successful doctor, you don’t only care where you live. You also care where you work. That’s why they’re drawn to Bronxville’s Lawrence Hospital Center. Over the last five years, we’ve spent nearly $50 million in renovations. S uffice it to say, that kind of money buys a lot more than a new coat of paint and some soothing wall art. Let’s start with the room people often see first: The Emergency Room. We’ve done so much reconstructive surgery on it, you wouldn’t recognize the place. Modern. Sleek. Computerized. It’s ever ything

you’d want in a part of the hospital we hope you never have to visit. Of course, not every visit to our hospital is for a bad reason. Sometimes it’s for a good one. And there’s no better example of that than our Maternity Ward. Our nursery is spacious enough to handle a minor population explosion. And with 23 new private rooms, their mothers get some well-deser ved privacy. Each room has been designed with soft lighting, carpeting, Internet access and a flat-screen TV. In addition to our warm bedside manner, we have electronic bedside records. A laser-fast scan of your ID bracelet tells our nurses who you are and what medication you need. It’s an extra layer of security that helps eliminate the possibility of mistaken identity. Speaking of technology, we’ve improved our image with upgraded MRIs and Westchester’s first Low Dose CT Scan. A dose so low, it delivers up to 40% less radiation than the previous model. That said, technology is only half the story. People are the other half.

In an age when hospitals focus on the almighty dollar, we still focus on the almighty patient. Maybe that’s why nationally recognized doctors and award-winning surgeons who could work anywhere, choose to work here. We don’t just talk about compassionate care, we also

live and breathe it. No wonder people think it’s healthier to live in the suburbs. If you’d like the full hospital tour, visit lawrencehealth.org. Find out why so many top doctors call our hospital “home.”

Schneiderman keynotes at Above the Bar BY JOHN GOLDEN jgolden@westfairinc.com

A

ddressing a lawyer-heavy audience in White Plains recently, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman urged attorneys to take on election reform issues and help create more inclusive and competitive voting to restore public integrity and unseat corruption in Albany. Schneiderman was keynote speaker at the seventh annual Above the Bar Awards

ceremony at Pace Law School June 6. Four attorneys and a Pace law student were honored at the event. The annual rite of spring brought more than 200 people to Preston Hall on the North Broadway campus. The event was sponsored by the Westchester County Business Journal, The Bristal Assisted Living White Plains, Citrin Cooperman, Customers Bank, Pace Law School, The Westchester Bank, Westchester County Bar Association and Westchester Women’s Bar Association.

IF WARREN BUFFETT SAID ‘BUY,’ WOULD YOU? Here’s what the Oracle of Omaha had to say in his annual letter to shareholders after Berkshire Hathaway bought 28 newspapers in 15 months:

“THE WORLD HAS CHANGED ... NEWSPAPERS CONTINUE TO REIGN SUPREME, HOWEVER, IN THE DELIVERY OF LOCAL NEWS.” “THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A LOCAL NEWSPAPER THAT IS DOING ITS JOB” “PAPERS DELIVERING COMPREHENSIVE AND RELIABLE INFORMATION TO TIGHTLY BOUND COMMUNITIES AND HAVING A SENSIBLE INTERNET STRATEGY WILL REMAIN VIABLE FOR A LONG TIME.” That’s what the Business Journals are all about.

Despite the recent flurry of arrests and ongoing investigations of state and local elected officials for alleged abuses of their public offices, “I don’t think there’s more corruption now than there was 30 or 50 years ago” in New York politics, Schneiderman said. Rather, more prosecutors now “are refusing to turn a blind eye to this and going after” elected officials reported by whistleblowers. “It’s about restoring public confidence in a system that is essential to our democracy,” he said.

Schneiderman said a more comprehensive approach is needed to combat corruption and protect taxpayers from misuse of public funds. Voting and voter registration should be made easier, the attorney general said, suggesting early voting, to reduce Election Day polling place lines, and weekend voting. Universal registration, a system in which government would automatically enroll citizens as voters, “is possible in New York,” he said.

The state’s top lawyer said many leads in public integrity cases handled by his office arise from contested elections, which serve as a check on misuse of public office by entrenched incumbents. “Most elections now are uncontested,” he said. “New York has a woeful rate of voter participation.” In the election last November, the state had a 35 percent voter turnout, the third worst in the U.S., he said. “We do not have competitive elections in most parts of New York state and I think that has to be the focus of our attention,” he said. “A vigorous, robust electoral process is like a stream – it helps clean things out. What we have in Albany now is a swamp.” “There is no reason New York cannot be a model on this issue,” Schneiderman said. Honorees and their Above the Bar awards were: • Robert A. Comply with ACA or face consequences, panelists say BY JENNIFER BISSELL jbissell@westfairinc.com

C

omplying with the new regulations tied to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will almost always be less expensive than paying the penalty for not offering health care plans to employees, experts said at a recent panel discussion. By 2014, employers with more than 50 full-time employees or full-time equivalents will be required to offer their employees health care coverage. While some business owners have said they’d rather save their money and pay a penalty for noncompliance, business advisers are encouraging large employers to instead comply with the mandate. “You have to get your arms up and around this today,” said panelist Russell J. Carpentieri, managing director of Opus Advisory Group L.L.C., at the Westchester Country Club in Harrison. “The cost of compliance is less than the cost of noncompliance.” The June 11 Navigating Health Care event was organized by Citrin Cooperman & Co. L.L.P., a tax and consulting firm with offices in Norwalk, Conn., and White Plains, among others.

Moderator Alan G. Badey, a Citrin Cooperman managing partner, at the June 11 seminar discussing the Affordable Care Act. Photo courtesy of Citrin Cooperman.

One of the first steps in complying with the regulations is for a company to determine whether it has 50 full-time employees and to determine who of those employees must be offered health care coverage, Carpentieri said. A company may only have 45 employees working full time at 130 hours a month, but if that company has at least another 10 employees who work 60 hours a month, it would be required to offer

all its employees health care coverage, Carpentieri said. All employees paid by a company are counted toward its total, whether they are part time, seasonal, independent contractors, union employees or hired through a staffing agency. Although these employees count toward the total, they don’t necessarily need to be offered health insurance, Carpentieri said. Only full-time employees and their dependents must be offered “affordable” coverage. Affordability is determined on an individual basis. For plans to be deemed affordable, they must cost less than 9.5 percent of an employee’s annual income, Carpentieri said. If employees don’t have access to an affordable plan and their income is between 100 percent and 400 percent of the federal poverty level, they are eligible to receive tax credits toward buying a plan on a state-based insurance exchange. However, if a full-time employee at a firm with 50 or more full-time staff or equivalents uses federal tax credits to pay for insurance that is marketed through a state exchange, the employer will be fined $3,000 per employee using the tax subsidy. If that company doesn’t offer its employees any health coverage in the first place, it will be charged $2,000 for every full-time

employee on staff. Panelist Jason Madrak, chief marketing officer of Access Health CT – which is Connecticut’s health insurance exchange – said government officials recognize the complexities of the Affordable Care Act. Madrak said it could be up to five years before the system stabilizes and provides real cost savings for every consumer. “The insurance marketplace is for the most part wildly dysfunctional,” Madrak said. “To address the dysfunction, they put a crazy, patchwork system – with a whole slew of tax incentives, subsidies and stipends – in place in order to plug the holes at all sorts of levels.” Despite the complexities, Madrak said the goal of the Affordable Care Act – to provide consumers with access to affordable health care – would ultimately be achieved. Carpentieri however, said he wasn’t so sure, especially because it has yet to be seen whether the market will offer plans that allow employers to be in compliance with the law. “I think it’s one of the most damaging bits of legislation to businesses; I really do,” Carpentieri said. “Best thing we can do is hunker down, play some strategy and see where it goes.”

ost social media campaigns require an effective website or landing page. (A landing page is any page that your audience is directed to, usually by clicking on a link.) It doesn’t do much good to drive a lot of traffic to a website only to have it bounce because of poor design or implementation. No matter how effective the social media strategy, the end result is a failed – or unsuccessful – campaign. Websites and landing pages are often the first impression you make on your audience. If they don’t like what they see or they can’t quickly understand what you’re promoting, they will quickly leave (bounce) and never return. This is why the median time spent on a website’s home page is under five seconds. We have frequently found instances where highly attractive websites have high bounce rates, the main culprit being that viewers cannot discern the offering or what action – if any – they are supposed to take. One problem that many landing pages and some websites have is that they do not match the advertisement or stimulus that directed the audience to them. For example, suppose I click on an advertisement on how to quickly build my email list and land on a landing page on how to effectively use Twitter. In this case, my expectations were not met and I would “bounce,” probably within a few seconds. There was no consistency between the advertisement and the landing page. Unfortunately, it is also fairly common to see an advertisement or some link direct people to a general home page that also does not meet their immediate expectations. This is often compounded by a home page that doesn’t easily and quickly tell the viewer about what they do. So here are some tips for great landing pages:

1. Be specific

Your landing page must match your advertisement or content. If it uses the same words or keywords, even better. The content on your landing page must be highly targeted and relevant. Remember, you can have any number of landing pages. If you have multiple ads or feeds, you can even have multiple landing pages – as long as they are contextually consistent. You may even want different landing pages depending on the traffic source. For example, traffic from Twitter will often react differently than traffic from LinkedIn.

2. Have a clear goal

What is the purpose of your landing page? Make sure it is obvious to your viewer and includes a clear call to action (CTA). Since any confusion can cost you business,

by bruce newman

make it as easy as possible for your viewers to understand what action they need to take and to then facilitate them to take that action.

4. Simplify your sign-up form

fewer the number of people who will sign up. The additional information you (as a company) desire must be balanced against the desire for more sign-ups. In practice, my company generally opts for as few fields as possible in an initial sign-up form. You can always utilize methods to obtain additional information once you have people who have already completed the initial sign-up process. One way of accomplishing this is by incorporating a landing page into a larger campaign with each subsequent touch point or step designed to obtain additional information.

Assuming your landing page has a signup form, the number of fields in the form will greatly affect the number of people who sign up. The more fields you have, the

3. Test, test, test and use analytics

Analytics will quickly tell you what is working and what isn’t. Always test to determine what your audience responds to and how it can be improved. Testing and analytics are extremely important in the creation of great landing pages. Regardless of how many landing pages you have created, you still need to test; the results may surprise you.

5. Make sure it is optimized for mobile

mat properly on a mobile platform – even if this requires the creation of additional pages. The effectiveness of websites and landing pages can greatly affect the perception and effectiveness of your online business. Vision attracts the best people

hat do the best people want? To be part of something bigger than themselves or to in some way play a role – even a small part – in making our world a better place? To work for and buy from organizations that allow them to express their values through the employer they’ve chosen and the purchases they make? If you were to play a part in making a better world, would you have to change or create a different vision statement for your business? What’s the current vision of your organization? Starbucks’ is “to inspire and nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time,” and yes, it makes good coffee. Google’s vision is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” and that requires a good search engine. Your vision is the magnet that attracts the right customers, recruits and retains the highest quality of loyal employees and pulls the right community support, inves-

tors and suppliers to you. The authors of the best-selling business book “Firms of Endearment” state that organizations must operate by a guiding vision of service that takes into account all of their ‘stakeholders,’ including customers, employees, suppliers, supply-chain partners, the communities in which they operate and their investors. Although not everyone will share your vision, those who do represent the customers, employees, outside suppliers, the community and owners or stockholders that are right for you. Nordstrom does not locate in the same neighborhoods as Walmart nor does it have as large a customer base. Both are very successful because they both know who their stakeholders are and what they want. So the most critical skill to craft your vision statement is to deliver what your customers, employees, outside suppliers, community and owners or stockholders want. Those people will demand accountability. It’s your vision statement that draws some people and repels others. As illustrated by

the examples of Nordstrom and Walmart, no successful organization can be all things to all people, nor should they try. Jim Collins, author of “Good to Great,” speaks about the importance of having the right people on the bus. Although your new vision will, like a magnet, attract the right people to you, it will also repel the wrong ones. So expect change as the people whose vision and values are not consistent with your new one leave. In “Taking People With You,” author David Novak states, “So what do your people, all of your people, want? What perceptions, habits or beliefs of this target audience do you need to build, change, or reinforce to reach your goal? Think about your target audience, the people you have to take with you.” If their vision matches yours, they are on the right bus, and if not, it is time for them to get off. Everyone wants to work for and do business with companies that reinforce their own personal vision and values. The individual will only find meaning and fulfillment in his or her work and life when

what he or she does each day is consistent with his or her own personal vision and values. Only by fulfilling each group’s desires can you show how your vision meets their needs while giving them what they want most: The ability to be part of something bigger than themselves or to in some way play a role – even a small part – in making our world a better place.

Questions for discussion: What will it take to develop a vision of making the world a better place? How will we enlist the power of people with a similar vision, to help make it a reality? The store opens for business June 14. Armonk has been without a supermarket since the A&P – across the street from Armonk Square – shuttered in February 2012. That closing came after the town of North Castle, citing traffic and parking concerns, scratched an A&P expansion proposal. The town planning board had approved the A&P plan, but the town board nixed it and A&P signed a deal to welcome a CVS on the site. Today, the empty A&P still stands as the opening of the CVS has been delayed due to a legal battle.

Stick with the business plan We’re struggling to build and follow a plan. It feels unnatural to prioritize working a plan when day-to-day pressures crop up. It’s easy to get sidetracked.

Thoughts of the day: Knowing where you’re going with the business long term is essential. Meet with your team regularly to report on – and evaluate –what’s happening and what’s next. Recognize that the attraction to working on short-term issues is an entrepreneurial trait that gets in the way of long-term business building. Think about the long-term goals you have for your business. Are they written down? Are the company’s stated goals clearly measurable? Are you and all of you employees aware of the company’s goals? Is everyone fully on board with doing their part to help the business meet its goals? Growth, profit, stability, predictability, peace of mind – all of these values are necessary for long-term success of any business. Do your company’s goals include all of these essential items? Is the company on track to

deliver in every area?

Ask yourself the following questions

• What growth percentage can my business reasonably achieve year after year? Is that fast enough to stay ahead of inflation? Is it slow enough to allow us time to identify and fix problems before they get out of hand? • What’s happening to gross and net profit? Are they both rising in real dollars? Are they both holding steady or increasing when measured as a percentage of revenue? • Is our plan consistent from year to year? Any holes in terms of execution? • How far out can we accurately plan revenue, cost of goods sold and expenses and reserves? At least three years? Can we adjust spending and sales to hit plan? • Do I, as owner, sleep soundly at night? What problems keep me up at night? Are my people making progress toward solving those issues? Entrepreneurs are very much focused on the here and now, get it done and make things happen immediately. That’s valuable, up to a point. As the business grows, the owner’s focus needs to shift to longer term planning and execution. This means transitioning from entrepreneur to CEO/Business Builder.

by andi gray

One entrepreneurial trait that becomes a liability as the company grows is the belief that every opportunity has to be acted upon before it’s lost. Entrepreneurs have a hard time saying “no” when they see potential right in front of them. Jumping on immediate opportunity may get in the way of achieving longer term goals. Resources get tied up, expenses climb beyond what’s budgeted, things don’t pan out and there aren’t enough reserve funds to recover properly. It takes real discipline, starting at the top of the organization, to meet the plan year in and year out. Set up a structure where you and your employees meet regularly to plan and review results vs. the plan. Encourage productive criticism. Make sure that meetings are outcome driven. End each meeting by recapping who does what next, to feed both short and long term plans. Recognize your role, as owner and CEO/ Business Builder, is to hold the company, and everyone in it, accountable. Make sure employees and vendors understand their role in meeting the company’s long-term goals. Evaluate customers – do they all meet “good customer” criteria? Are you adding custom-

ers of the future? If there are performance gaps anywhere in the business, address them before they get out of hand. Before making any short- or long-term decisions, the business builder looks at the long-term plan. Is the opportunity facing the business part of the plan or is it a distraction? Is there another opportunity that could be set aside in favor of chasing this one, and how do the payoffs compare? When does experimenting cost the business so much risk, that it’s no longer worthwhile? Looking for a good book? Try “Business Plans That Work, A Guide for Small Business” by Andrew Zacharakis, Stephen Spinelli and Jeffrey Timmons. Golf club and DEP agree on easement

ith the bulk of New York City’s tap water across King Street to the south, the water hazards on The Whippoorwill Club’s 18 holes in Armonk play themselves out in conjunction with the city’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). After 10 years of talks, Whippoorwill and the DEP agreed June 10 on a $10 million deal to preserve permanently 100 acres of golf course so as not to pollute with runoff the Kensico Reservoir’s 30.6 billion gallons of Big Apple water.

Under the terms – still being finalized and not expected to be signed until next year – New York City will assume part of the tax burden of the land, which will remain on local tax rolls. The course, in turn, will feature 50-foot buffers around seven golf course ponds and filters to purify stormwater runoff. The golf course and tennis courts on the site will remain active. Approximately 90 percent of the easement land is in the town of North Castle, with the balance in the town of New Castle. The DEP will pay $100,000 per acre

for purchase of the easement. According to a Whippoorwill spokesman, “This is well below the value of the land for housing lots in that area of Armonk.” Both parties issued statements of approval: “We are very pleased to have reached an agreement with DEP that will preserve this environmentally valuable land from future development while helping protect the quality of the water that serves millions of people in the metropolitan area,” club President Paul Atkinson said. “This transaction is in the best interests of the DEP, our members and the

surrounding community.” More than 43 percent of land within the Kensico Reservoir watershed will be protected with the addition of the Whippoorwill easement, the DEP reported. “DEP is grateful that its ongoing negotiation with the Whippoorwill Club and its board of directors has yielded an agreement that is beneficial to both parties,” DEP Commissioner Carter Strickland said. “This conservation easement will help DEP protect the water supply for more than 8 million New Yorkers and it will provide the club with the capital it needs to improve its facilities and continue its impressive record of environmental stewardship.” The club is on Whippoorwill Road off Route 120. It first opened for golf in 1928 and today hosts 300 members. – Bill Fallon

Internet-based software services beginning Jan. 1, 2014. Since 1913, the Blue Book Network has focused on buying and hiring processes within the construction industry. It maintains a nationwide industry search engine and publishes 28 regional directories annually. The Blue Book Network traces its start to Joseph O’Malley, president of The Society of the Allied Building Trades Inc., who published the first Subcontractor’s Registry in New York City. The founder’s nephew, Walter F. O’Malley, later joined him in the construction publishing business as editor before moving on to own

the Brooklyn Dodgers. Richard Johnson, president of The Blue Book Network, said, “With our acquisition of the Jobsite123 profile system, we will enable our customers to showcase their project experience and supporting qualifications to companies looking for their products or services. This enhanced profile information will be readily available throughout the entire Blue Book network and the major search engines.” Coty Fournier, co-founder and CEO of Jobsite123, is now vice president of network solutions for The Blue Book Network. — Bill Fallon

SPECIAL Elder REPORT Care

Old neighborly ways for a new economic era BY JOHN GOLDEN jgolden@westfairinc.com

L

ike other support programs for the elderly and their caregivers sponsored by the Westchester Public-Private Partnership for Aging Services, this recent award-winning one began as a demonstration project on a small scale. A 90-year-old married couple in the county was in need of help in the tasks of daily living. Both husband and wife suffered from dementia. At the county Department of Senior Programs and Services – the prime mover behind the 22-year-old Aging Services partnership of businesses, nonprofits, public agencies and consumers – staff turned to a traditional source of help for a community’s elders that did not require public funding: neighbors. Neighbors volunteered to cook for the couple. They drove the wife to visit her husband during his hospitalization. Some helped despite unfriendly relations in the past with their elderly neighbors. When the hospital’s discharge plan required that the couple not spend nights alone, neighbors teamed up on a solution. For 10 nights they took turns staying with the couple until a young relative arrived from California to take over caregiving duties. “We said, ‘Let’s bottle this; let’s formalize this,’” said Mae Carpenter, commissioner of the county department serving the elderly in Westchester, where one out of five residents is 60 or older. The result is Care Circles of Westchester, a program of the Livable Communities Initiative, another award-winning effort that was launched four to five years ago by the county’s publicprivate partnership for the aging. “Step forward and give back” is the motto and recruiting slogan for the volunteers of Care Circles. That volunteer help enables elderly residents to stay in their homes and avoid costly institutional care. The Care Circles program also saves taxpayer money, Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino has noted. The average yearly cost for a nursing home in Westchester is $120,000, he said. The Care Circles program recently won the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging’s Innovations Award. The association also conferred an achievement award on another initiative sponsored by the county’s coalition for the aging, a seven-week think tank study coordinated last winter by the 9-year-old Westchester Alliance of Academic Institution for Aging-Related Studies and Workforce Development. The report, “Driving for Solutions,” was the work of nine students from six colleges in New York, including Westchester’s Mercy College, Pace University, Sarah Lawrence College and SUNY Purchase. The study focused on ways to improve transportation options for elderly residents in the county’s rural northeast region and for home care workers that have found travel to those distant areas too expensive, leaving aging residents without the aid they need.

Those who work with and for her laud Carpenter as the visionary behind Livable Communities and the numerous innovative projects and collaborations that have made Westchester County’s approach to aging issues a model for other states and municipalities. The Livable Communities caregiver coaching program has even been adopted by a village in Portugal, said Colette Phipps, research analyst at the county Department of Senior Programs and Services and executive director of the Livable Communities Initiative. Yet Carpenter dismisses the visionary label bestowed on her for her brainstorms in the service of the county’s growing aging population and their caregivers, 33,000 of whom tend to the daily needs of Westchester residents 60 or older, according to county officials. “It’s not vision. It’s common sense,” she said recently in her Mount Vernon office. “I don’t spend a day creating a publicly funded project because the money just isn’t there.” Instead she devotes her efforts to private projects that typically rely on community and family practices that have eroded in Westchester and beyond. Many of the services performed by Care Circles and Livable Communities volunteers – escorting the elderly on trips and shopping for them, for example – used to be done by grandchildren or other family members, she said. But many of Westchester County’s youths have relocated to other areas of the country “because of the high cost of living here,” Carpenter said. “So that leaves a lot of older people without an intergenerational support system.” Some volunteer programs started here are efforts to fill that void.

“It’s really going back to helping people out, like it used to be” in America’s neighborhoods, she said. The Livable Communities program is attempting to recreate those neighborly support systems with “villages” that monitor and help meet the various needs of the elderly among them. The villages include churches and interfaith groups, libraries, nonprofit service and health care agencies, public authorities and agencies, tenant groups, senior living facilities, community centers and senior citizen clubs, pharmacies and other businesses and the 1,200-member Business Council of Westchester. In the last two years, 185 such villages have been created in the county that collectively number more than 89,000 members. Economic insecurity – “falling through the trap door,” as Carpenter describes it – is another growing problem among Westchester’s elderly. Phipps said 73 percent of respondents to an economic security index survey “say they’re underwater” financially. “A lot of elderly are in that situation where they’re finding they’re helping their adult children and their grandchildren” with their financial needs, thereby depleting the savings they might need as their health deteriorates with advancing age. In Westchester, “A lot of elderly can’t handle their property taxes,’ said Carpenter. “Until they do something about these property taxes, people will not be able to meet their basic physiological needs.” Carpenter and her colleagues in the public and private sectors have begun addressing solutions to that. “These are extremely challenging times,” she said. Westchester Library System’s (WLS) Senior Benefits Information Centers have now added the SBIC Helpline to make accessing health care information more convenient. The helpline number is (914) 231-3260. Those needing information about Medicare and other benefits can still walk into the benefit centers found in a number of area libraries but can now opt to have a telephone consultation with trained experts as well. Elena Falcone, director of the WLS Office of Community Connections, said the expansion is timely. “The demand has built as we’ve been open, and it’s only getting more so because of the confusion in the marketplace because of the health care exchanges,” she said. The benefit centers, which started in 2006, have been addressing the growing demand, especially as older workers face numerous decisions as they approach retirement age or in many cases, adjust to life after being laid off. The walk-in service has expanded from two sites at its start to eight sites. The centers were designed to not only

Trained volunteers, Falcone said, combine the latest information with compassion and personal experience. Often the hardest part is getting started, with some seniors reluctant to seek help.“Some of it may be ‘I’m lonely,’” Falcone said. “Some of it may be ‘I’m scared to ask for help.’” Volunteers realize the challenges, she added, and often spend nearly an hour with each client. “It’s an amazingly personal conversation.” The volunteers, who number about 45, are key to the program’s success, she added. “They are passionate about people getting the services to which they are entitled,” she said. The burden of long-term care costs BY aNTHONY J. ENEa

I

n a study published April 3, the RAND Corp. estimated that the monetary cost of dementia in the United States ranges from $150 billion to $215 billion annually. According to the study, the cost of dementia to the nation is greater than that of heart disease or cancer. Furthermore, dementia care costs are expected to double by 2040. As the number of individuals requiring long-term care continues to grow, one of the first things that will be tested is if our existing system can adequately handle the surge. Traditionally, most individuals suffering from advanced dementia and/or other Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s related illnesses in Westchester County were treated in nursing homes. However, in the last decade there has been a significant shift from this model of care to one with greater emphasis upon “aging in place.” Today, more and more of these individuals are receiving care either at home, in an assisted living facility or in a continuing care retirement community for significantly longer periods of time.

Regardless of the housing option chosen, the need will still exist for significantly larger numbers of trained health care providers to attend to a growing aging population that is living longer. Westchester will require more physicians trained in geriatric medicine, qualified home care providers and aides, assisted living facilities and even nursing homes within the next 20 to 30 years. For seniors not financially eligible for Medicaid and who have not purchased long-term care insurance or engaged in long-term planning, the cost of such care can be devastating. For example, in Westchester County the average private cost of 24/7 care at home can average between $7,000 to $10,000 per month when utilizing a qualified agency. Obviously, this is significantly less expensive than the cost of a nursing home, which in Westchester averages from $385 to $425 per day, or $140,525 to $155,125 annually. Unfortunately, these costs have consistently increased year to year at double-digit percentages, and it is difficult to estimate with any degree of certainty what the costs will be in the future.

IntroducIng the brIstal

Fortunately, there are a number of planning options available to seniors, which will allow them to shelter their assets from the cost of care, such as gifting of assets, utilizing an Irrevocable Medicaid Asset Protection Trust and/or purchasing longterm care insurance. Implementing these options prior to needing care is imperative. If one is financially and categorically eligible, the federal/state program providing care for seniors either at home or in a nursing home is Medicaid (not Medicare). Medicaid is a “means-tested” entitlement program that looks at both the resources (savings) and income of the senior to determine eligibility. For example, if a senior is single, he or she is not allowed to have more than $14,400 of savings and no more than $800 or $820 per month of income to be eligible for either nursing home or home care Medicaid. However, spouses are permitted to transfer assets to each other to help meet the financial eligibility requirement. The spouse to whom the assets have been transferred may need to execute a “spousal refusal” stating that he or she refuses to utilize his or her income and resources to support his or her spouse.

Seniors only have two truly effective advance planning options: purchase long-term care insurance and/or transfer a portion of their assets to an Irrevocable Medicaid Asset Protection Trust or to their loved ones. The transfer of assets to a trust will create a five-year look-back period (ineligibility period) for purposes of Medicaid nursing home eligibility (not Medicaid Home Care). However, once the five years have elapsed the assets transferred will not be counted as available resources. Advanced planning is imperative for seniors who wish to shelter their life savings from the cost of long-term care. The RAND Corp.’s recent findings remind us that such steps are more critical now than ever before. Anthony J. Enea is the managing member of Enea, Scanlan & Sirignano, L.L.P. of White Plains. He is the immediate past chair of the Elder Law Section of the New York State Bar Association and a founding member and past president of the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Visions in Wood

“We Few, We Happy Few,” an exhibit of sculpture and drawings by Matt Pozorski opened with a reception June 14 at the Delaware Arts Center’s Loft Gallery, 37 Main St. in Narrowsburg. The exhibit will be on view through July 6. Viewing hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “I feel that the role of art can be to share what is really there, underneath the surface,” said Pozorski, who works in drawing, as well as sculpture. I draw from life regularly to sharpen my eye, my ability to observe the human condition. I sculpt in wood because it is a living material,” he said. Pozorski’s work is inspired by both his personal well being and that of friends. Since surviving cancer in 1998-99, Pozorski has been active in survivor support through his life and his art. “I began this body of work in 2004 when my friend, the sculptor Charles Searles, was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer. He started treatment at an oncology clinic decorated with cartoons of thin, feminine angels,” Pozorski said. But, he had the vision of a different type of angel for his friend. “I found the right log and carved with urgency. I like to think that this did him some real good and he lived a longer more vital life than his prognosis suggested,” Pozorski said. He operates Matt Pozorski Sculptureworks, a foundry and sculpture-services company that has completed projects for Robert Raushenberg, Carolee Schneeman, The American Museum of Natural History and New York City’s Percent for Art program. He lives and sculpts in Ellenville. For more information about the exhibit, call (845) 2527576 or visit ArtsAllianceSite.org.

$15m capitaL campaign

The Camphill Village Copake Foundation has launched the public phase of a campaign to raise $15 million by 2015 to improve aging buildings and infrastructure at Camphill Village in Copake, and to complete construction at the new elder care community at Camphill Ghent in Ghent. The campaign was officially launched at a recent reception in New York City for donors and friends of Camphill Village. Chris Kersten, director of development at the foundation said, “The extraordinary generosity of those who support our mission is deeply gratifying. Over the past two years, we have quietly raised more than $9.6 million toward our $15-million goal. In this next, public phase we will be reaching out

to people beyond our traditional donor base to help us cross the finish line.” Bill Vogt, president of the board of directors, said, “Of the $15 million we are seeking, $11.3 million will be used to stabilize and improve existing houses, workshops and buildings at Camphill Village, and to add new structures, roadways and open spaces. Another $3.7 million will be used to complete construction at Camphill Ghent, the new elder care residential community, which opened in January 2012.” Camphill Village USA Inc. is a community of 240 people, some with special needs, who live and work together on a 615-acre organic farm in Copake. Astor Services for Children & Families held its 15th annual Stenberg Cup Golf Tournament June 10 at Trump National Golf Club in Hopewell Junction. The funds raised at this event will provide the Astor children with programs and services they need to succeed. The weather held out allowing the golfers to play 18 holes, followed by a cocktail reception and dinner. The tournament had several contests – a putting and a hole-in-one challenge; the winner received a vehicle donated by Rhinebeck Ford. A raffle featured many items and the live auction included a foursome to Trump National Club Westchester; Four New York Yankee tickets; and a foursome at Streamsong and Saddlebrook in Florida (this included a weekend stay at the Sheraton in Tampa). Major sponsors for the event included Adam’s Fairacre Farms; Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York; M&T Bank; McCarthy’s Pharmacy; and Rose & Kiernan Inc. Dreamy images

“Perhaps in a Dream,” an exhibit of photography by Joe Statuto, is on view at the Delaware Arts Center’s Alliance Gallery in Narrowsburg. The exhibit will be on view through July 6. Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Inspired in part by the surreal writings of Jorge Luis Borges in creating these dreamlike, illusory scenes where common objects seem to take on profound meaning, Statuto trained as an oil and watercolor painter, before being drawn to digital photography about 10 years ago. “Applying my knowledge of composition and rendering as a painter, I began to create composite digital images, blending parts of several photographs to create the final images. The digital medium allowed me to create dream-like surreal images that felt right to me.” For more information about the exhibit, call (845) 2527576 or visit ArtsAllianceSite.org.

A celebration of trains titled “Leaving on Track 9: The Train Show” is taking place through July 8 at RiverWinds Gallery, 172 Main St., Beacon. Photos by Karl LaLonde and paintings by Peter Tassone illustrate two men’s fascination with these mechanized workhorses, from steam to diesel. Gallery hours are Wednesdays to Mondays noon to 6 p.m. and Beacon Second Saturday noon to 9 p.m. LaLonde, who roamed both old-time steam train stations and modern diesel tracks, is particularly intrigued by the patina acquired by these hard-working engines. He has been intrigued with the look of old trucks, cars and trains for years. “I love transportation, especially old transportation. Coming up close to these machines for me is like meeting someone in their 80s and they finally start to talk about their lives and how full they have been. I see that in the old trucks and trains that I photograph, says LaLonde.” A retired art director, LaLonde is a photographer and painter, originally from the Thousand Islands area but he spent his high school and college years in the Hudson Valley. He attended Dutchess Community College for commercial art and Bard College for photography, and started working for IBM in the ’60s as an artist in its TV studio. Today, to feed his art habit, he and his wife, (who is also an artist) operate their toy store The Danbury Hobby Center in Danbury, Conn. Tassone’s paintings reflect his fascination with how trains interact with the landscape, whether rural or urban. “My work reflects my lifelong interest in railroads, especially during the steam era,” says Tassone. His father, who had a formal art education and was a superb draftsman, taught Tassone all the basics in painting and also helped to instill in him the affection for trains that he carries with him to this day. He started painting seriously as a teenager, attended New York Institute of Technology and SUNY, New Paltz, where he received an MFA degree. Tassone spent more than a decade painting in a variety of abstract and expressionist styles, before painting trains in 1989. He works for Metro-North Railroad.
