Graduation & Honors 2014
Congratulations to the Class of 2014! In this publication, we celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating seniors and those Walker students who received major awards and honors this school year.
Salutatory Address
Hannah Uher Hannah Uher will be attending Brandeis University in the fall where she plans to major in theater arts.
Good morning. On behalf of the class of 2014, I’d like to welcome all of you, parents, relatives, friends, members of the Board of Trustees, and other special guests, to this year’s commencement ceremony. Each of our high school careers is unique and characterized by our own experiences, in and out of the classroom. Some of us have devoted our time to sports, some to drama, art, music, or academics. Even though we have all done different things at Walker, I hope that we will all
look back fondly at our time here and remember the teachers who care about us, the friendships that have shaped us as students and individuals, and the shared experiences that have brought us closer together. Now, by shared experiences, I certainly mean winning the homecoming walkout two years in a row, cheering each other on at football games, and supporting one another during shows, but I am also referring to the shared experience of teamwork. Every single one of us has been a part of team, a group of people who work together to achieve a common goal and share an experience, whether it’s training hard to be a part of Walker’s first football team to win playoffs, working late-nights at Grease rehearsals that pay off in a sold out house and multiple Shuler award nominations, or getting to apply Spanish knowledge by traveling abroad to Argentina with friends. In this way, all of our high school careers are quite similar, yet still remain distinct. What really ties us together, though, and what I believe characterizes our class, is our passion. I can truly say that everyone in this class has some sort of passion; a force that drives and inspires us each and everyday. When you have a passion for tennis, you train hard at practice to improve your game and you cherish your time spent on the court. When you have a passion for the arts, you
stay up late painting, playing your instrument, or singing and you attend shows and concerts in your free time. When you have a passion for learning, you look forward to your favorite class, and you leave eager to apply your new knowledge. Our passion can be seen in all we have accomplished as individuals and as a class. Passion is an important ingredient in life, so I encourage all of you to continue to be passionate as you venture on into college and beyond, to never let yourself become apathetic. Passion will open the door to new and exciting experiences. Our passions have driven us throughout high school and brought us here today, but as we move onto college we may need even more. To become more passionate or discover new passions we have to remain open. Open to people, knowledge, ideas, and experiences. Open-mindedness allows us to be passionate, energetic, and enthusiastic. Be open to people. Step out of your social group, approach the person who is sitting alone, make dozens of new friendships, and you will have succeeded if even just one is lasting and sincere. Be open to knowledge and ideas. We are all about to greatly expand our worlds and interact
travelled with family, even to another part of this country, know the value of a totally new and fresh experience.
Wonderland, Lewis Carroll: “One of the deep secrets of life, is that all that is really worth the doing, is what we do for others.”
Openness is a gateway for passion, allowing us to discover new things about ourselves and the world around us and to develop as individuals. So, I encourage all of you to remain open and to be passionate about whatever path you choose to follow, even if that path changes maybe five or fifteen times. Remember that we are a part of a class with great traditions in teamwork and passion, which are being celebrated and honored here today.
Second, from Dory, in the movie Finding Nemo: “When life gets you down, do you know what you’ve got to do? Just keep swimming.”
Lastly, I would like to carry on the tradition begun by John Eun, of ending the Salutatory address with three or more interesting, but unrelated quotations. Before I begin, though, I would like to point out that this tradition began in the spring of 1995, before the class of 2014 was even born.
Fourth and finally, from Olaf the snowman, in the movie Frozen: “Some people are worth melting for.”
First, from the writer of Alice’s Adventure’s in
with so many new people who possess a great wealth of knowledge, so we should take advantage of that, by taking classes that interest and challenge us, by listening to what others have to say, and by taking advantage of every opportunity we can to learn and grow as people in and out of the classroom. Be open to experience. Join new clubs in college and be involved in ways you have yet to be involved. If you have the chance, expand your horizons by studying abroad. Those of us who have been on the German, French, or Argentinian exchange, the Italy trip, or who have
Third, from the television show Doctor Who: “The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”
Congratulations on your success over the past four years and for being here today. Hold on to your passions and remain open, so that you may discover even more to be passionate about in the future. Thank you.
Valedictory Address
Annabelle Mathis Annabelle Mathis will be attending the Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall where she plans to major in aerospace engineering.
Ladies and gentleman, teachers and students, honored guests, good morning. It is my sincere pleasure and honor to address my fellow classmates on this, the day of our graduation. We have come far from the day when we first entered the Upper School. We were timid, we were shy, and some of us were quite scrawny. Well, my friends, we have, as they say, moved up in the world. We gained confidence in ourselves, we gained confidence in our abilities, we gained confidence in each other, and we gained a few well needed inches. We were given the opportunity to receive an excellent education, and over of the course of four years we got one. We have been most fortunate in that respect. Some would even say that we have been lucky, and lucky in respects far beyond the matter of our schooling. We grew up free in a free nation. We have had opportunities denied to others, because of sacrifices made by our fellow citizens. Soldiers, patriots, parents, teachers. In this way, then, our luck has not really been luck. We grew up free, because others paid for our freedom in blood, sweat, and tears. We grew
up free from want, because our parents worked to provide for us. We have had the opportunity to attend The Walker School because of the sacrifices our parents made for our education. Some would say we were lucky, and we were. But our luck was not really luck. The opportunities which we have been blessed with, though we did not earn them, the times when we have succeeded even though we stumbled, were not due to fortune or chance. Our luck has been other people. The parents who made our education possible. The teachers who were far more than teachers, but who became mentors, coaches, and even friends. The phrase “above and beyond the call of duty” comes to mind.
I will pause now to say thank you sincerely and wholeheartedly for all you have done for us. But most of all, our luck has been each other. When we forgot about that homework, when we didn’t understand trigonometry, we were lucky, because we were there for each other. When we forgot our lines, or missed a note, we were lucky, because we covered for each other. When we missed the catch, or didn’t make the shot, we were lucky, because our teammates got the rebound and gave us a second chance at victory. In those moments when we should have failed, we succeeded because others were there. It was not random chance that those who caught us
when we stumbled, were there by our sides. They were there because we were there. At some point in our past, we stayed up all night teaching a classmate derivatives, or we were the ones who improvised when someone missed a cue, or we held the line when the other team got a turnover. We will all take with us many lessons from our years here. We each arrived in need of our own special kind of polishing, and thus, we each learned what needed to learn, we experienced what we needed to experience, we gained what we needed to come thus far. One lesson that, though it may not quite so obvious, I hope we each understand the importance of, is the way in which we have succeeded because of others. We know only the world in which we have grown up. We were raised by our parents,
mentored by our teachers, and befriended by our classmates. We are about to embark on a new voyage, entering a strange new world. Many of us are going to colleges and universities where we do not know another soul. We will leave our parents at home, our teachers will remain at Walker to deal a new crop of awkward freshmen, and we will part ways with some of our dearest friends. So remember those who helped you come thus far, and seek out new friends and mentors. As you heard Hannah say, be open to finding the people who will challenge you like you have been challenged before, who will support you like you have been supported, who will be at your side when you falter, who will cheer you on when you waver. And more importantly, be the person you want at your side when your back’s against the wall. We will succeed, as we always have, largely as a result of our own efforts and labors, but the time will come, when you will not go on alone, because you cannot go on alone. Find the people who will carry you across the finish line. We as a generation have many challenges ahead of us. We live in tumultuous times. I do not want to get into politics here, and I won’t. I will simply say this, we have many great tasks before us, but in this adversity lies opportunity. We must do great things, and we will do great things. We will strive, and seek, and find, and not yield. And when we cross the finish line, we will be flanked by those who we carried, and who carried us. So, to my classmates, my teammates, and my friends: thank you for the sincere privilege of allowing me to be at your side, and for being at mine as we take this first step into the rest of our lives. I will close with one final quote from Winnie-the-Pooh, “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Thank you and congratulations Class of 2014! We made it!
Commencement Speech
Rick Clark Rick Clark is the Director of Admission at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
In other words, you have a boat, a paddle, a helmet, a life jacket. You’ve been in the river. You know how to roll. You are not just going from the still waters of Stone Mountain into Class IV rapids with no preparation. So be confident! You have earned a place at the college you are going to, and you are ready to not just survive but to really enjoy the ride - to play in the river of college, to explore, to test yourself and to see the next four years as a great adventure.
Rather than give a traditional commencement speech, Rick Clark told students, parents, and faculty members a humorous story of his attempt to kayak an infamous rapid on the Nantahala River - or, as he described it, “a near death experience turned victory!” These were his parting words to the Class of 2014. You are ready. You are graduating from Walker, surrounded by family and friends who love you, who have supported you and sacrificed for you. You have tons of skills, talents, passions, potential, and resources.
Lots of freshman second guess themselves at orientation or in the first week or in the first semester. They question if they are smart enough, if they really fit in, or if they can re-establish a network of friends 500 miles away from home. You are ready. Be confident! You are not ready. There are rocks. There are odd rapids and currents. There are hydraulics. There are times when you put the paddle in the river and you come up with nothing. It’s going to look different for each of you. Maybe it’s failing a test or a freshman class, enduring some huge breakup, doing laundry on your own for the first time, becoming completely confused about what you want to do with your
life, or equally terrifying, actually realizing what you want to do with your life. In those head spinning, swirling, confounding moments, you’ll feel like your helmet is not on tight enough or that your paddle is not long enough. That’s what you get for leaving the Walker family. Remember what you see around you today - all of these friends, teachers, parents, family. What’s going to spit you out of the hydraulic is not your intelligence or your talents; it’s other people. Continue to invest your time in relationships. Be honest with people. Trust them and really listen. That’s what will buoy you in rough waters. Many freshmen and college students in general fail to be open and proactive when they need help academically, when they are feeling alone or depressed, when they are struggling. Even if you are not entirely ready, be humble! Give others the joy and pleasure of helping you thrive, of handing you back your paddle, and encouraging you down the river. Don’t portage! Go down the biggest rapids! Do not settle and play it safe.
Learn to hate the word “mediocre.” In Greek, it is translated “Medius Ocris” or “half way up the rugged mountain.” Basically, the idea that you got to the tough part and settled, quit, succumbed to the status quo. Einstein said, “A ship is always safe at the shore—but that is not what it was built for!” College is a time of incredible adventure. I encourage you to take risks. Take tough classes, take different classes. Get into 3 a.m.
conversations that are way outside your comfort zone and force you to question what you’ve been taught, or really consider what and why you believe what you do. Walker has prepared you for that! These faculty, staff, your parents, and those who know and love you most do not want safe for you. This preparation is about excellence, impact, excitement, and ultimately a life of exhilaration. Don’t portage. College—and life beyond—should be all about discovery. About direction. About formation and
ultimately about transformation. That does not happen at the shore. You are launching into an exciting, turbulent, exhilarating river, and you are ready. Be confident! You, on your own, are not ready. Be humble and lean on others! And, whatever you do, do not portage. Congratulations, and enjoy your ride.
