2017-2018 Philanthropy Report
“If you want to do something for your children and show how much you love them, the single best thing – by far – is to support organizations that will create a better world for them.” – M. Bloomberg
The dawn of a new day at Walker‌ The state-of-the-art Warren Science & Technology Building provides 37,000-square-feet of innovative space designed specifically for The Walker School. Not only do students learn within the facility, but the building itself is a tool for the program. In the following pages, you will see how the generosity and commitment of donors to The Wonder of We Capital Campaign energized the academics, arts, and athletics programs at Walker.
The Wonder of 2018 will certainly be remembered as a pivotal year in the history of The Walker School. In February, our school community dedicated the Wolverine Athletic Fields, part of the twenty contiguous acres the school purchased in 2014. This exciting addition allowed Walker to expand our lacrosse program into the Middle School, host Middle School baseball games on campus for the first time in school history, and give our girls softball program a permanent home. In early August, we celebrated the opening of The Warren Science & Technology Building, which brings 37,000square-feet of innovative teaching and learning space for Walker’s world-class academic program. Additionally, this new facility allowed for significant renovations in Main Hall to benefit the fine arts program with expanded space for band and orchestra, dedicated space for 2D and 3D Art, a new dance and yoga studio, and significant lighting and sound upgrades to Coca-Cola Family Auditorium. Walker faculty exude contagious intellectual energy and cultivate each student’s spirit of wanting to know. These exciting additions to our campus have
We created a dynamic where the facilities have reached the level of excellence that has always been present in our school’s academic, fine arts, and athletic programs. Additionally, we are already seeing growth in the academic program because of the wonder created with this state-of-the-art space. One example I like to share is that two Upper School girls, both involved in the robotics program, were inspired to start a “Girls Who Code” club, with the help of Director of Technology & Innovation, Ms. Cristi LeBron. On the day of our Upper School Activities Fair, 38 girls signed up for the club - a number that represents 20% of our Upper School female student body! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Director of Advancement, Shelly Manuel '96, and I would like to thank everyone in The Walker School community who made The Wonder of We Capital Campaign such a success. We are enjoying the Wolverine Athletic Fields, The Warren Science & Technology Building, and the newly renovated space in Main Hall because so many gave sacrificially to the School we all love. Most of the donors to The Wonder of We Capital Campaign are current parents 3
who are committed to the school in three ways - through tuition, annual fund, and capital campaign investments; I am especially grateful to each of you for believing in The Walker School. And while it is very exciting to enjoy the fruits of our labor in the present, I want to thank each of you who gave on behalf of future generations of Walker students. Your generosity will continue to make a difference for years to come. With gratitude,
Jack Hall Head of School

The Wonder of We Capital Campaign, chaired by Dawn and Alex Koutouzis and Kristin and Glenn Shaw, was the largest philanthropy effort in Walker’s history. Beginning in early 2015 and concluding in late 2017, the School was humbled by the generosity of the community to this campaign. Trustees, parents, past parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, and Atlanta foundations came together to complete the first phase of the campus master plan. The Walker School would like to thank the donors listed on the following pages for their leadership and support of this tremendous accomplishment. The legacy that you have left for generations of students will be felt for years to come. Because of this campaign, scientists will explore, engineers will innovate, and journalists will unveil truths. Dancers will choreograph masterpieces, sculptors will mold wonders, and painters will interpret and find beauty in the ordinary. Athletes will push themselves to compete and succeed as a team. This truly was the Wonder of We.

Warren Building Dedication On August 5, 2018, the Walker community came together to officially dedicate The Warren Science & Technology Building. The celebration began with a donor reception in the dining hall followed by a public ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication on the lawn outside the building. Nearly 200 guests enjoyed selfguided tours of the 37,000-square-foot facility, exploring three stories of new lecture halls, science labs, independent student workspaces, robotics rooms, breakout spaces, a state-of-the-art media/ tech suite, and the green roof and rooftop classroom. Science faculty were in their classrooms to talk with visitors about the impact these new spaces will have on their program.
Upper School Science Department Chair Emily Adams discusses the impact the new Science and Technology spaces will have on the Walker science program.

Wisdom Begins in Wonder By Emily Adams, Upper School Science Chair
Here are just a few examples of the powerful - and just plain fun - learning that I’ve witnessed since the start of school: •
• • As I reflect on our community’s first month in the Warren building, I can’t stop smiling. Walking through these halls every day and observing kids exploring new and different paths to learning has been inspirational. There are so many spaces our students and teachers can use both in and outside of the classroom to find the time and space to ponder, collaborate, make thinking visible, and struggle with complex, meaningful problems – these are the spaces where transformative learning happens. Every classroom now has space for teachers to get their students up and moving, transitioning seamlessly between hands-on activities and discussion. Having 6th through 12th grade science and technology in the same physical space makes it so easy for our teachers to plan, imagine, implement, and reflect together. I am tickled pink to watch this building’s first cohorts of our public health and engineering concentration students envision, carry out, and communicate their own novel scientific research in our TWO, not one, but TWO student research suites! These spaces open the possibilities for new senior projects and increase the number of students leaning into up-and-coming science – further strengthening their ability to stand out and succeed with confidence and competence in college and beyond.
• • • •
8th grade physical science students using every inch of the break-out spaces on the Middle School floor to design their film pod rockets, and THEN using the front of the building to test and analyze them; 7th grade life science students researching on our new Chromebooks and exuberantly debating with each other what it means to be biologically alive; Biology students using microscopes to observe and interpret cellular transport in real time; Physics students building and testing pendulums, deeply immersed in dialogue about the patterns they see emerging from their pooled data; Environmental science students doing microbial and chemical analysis on water supplies from around campus; Both public health and engineering research students engaged in vigorous peer review and support of their research proposals; And seniors, during their free periods, pulling up comfy seating next to the collaborative whiteboard spaces to work through challenging ideas together.
I invite you to visit our new home often, to see the magic happening within. Whether you sit in on a life science class creating their Mars mission packing plans, see the biology classes track the coming flu season’s genetic evolution, listen to our chemistry students engage in argument from evidence after a chemical reaction lab, or just spend some time in our halls, I hope that you will know and feel deeply what a difference this space has made in the lives of our students and our faculty. Our outside now matches the passion and talent on the inside that I believe our science and tech community has always had. I can’t wait to see what comes next, but I know it’s where wonder leads. 11
Physical science students are thrilled as they have a successful launch of their film pod rocket! The Public Health Guided Scientific Research class settles into their own experimental space on the first day of school.

“We tell everyone that bringing our girls to Walker was one of the best decisions we ever made. And this is coming from two frugal accountants who live in a neighborhood with good public schools. We spent five years and multiple spreadsheets contemplating a move to Walker for our three girls. Had we known what we know now, we would have made that decision much earlier. At Walker, our girls are becoming the people they are intended to be. Walker focuses on developing children in the areas that best align to our values: academics, developing strong character traits, public speaking, and curiosity. The diversity of the student body and the support of the Walker community - students, teachers, administrators, parents in encouraging each student to explore their unique interests make Walker a truly distinctive place. Recently, a teacher told us that she thought our daughter was amazing. We agree, but we believe a strong contributing factor is the amazing environment, amazing teachers, and amazing community at Walker that encourages her to be amazing. That is why we give... The Niland Family - Michael and Jill with daughters Chloe '25, Hailey '27, and Mac '29

Why we give...
Leadership Society Giving Levels Chairman’s Circle
Walker has been fortunate to have strong visionaries guide the School through the growth and development of its campus and programs. The Chairman’s Circle honors the commitment and leadership of this esteemed group.
Head of School’s Circle
Seven headmasters have served Walker since its founding. This giving level pays tribute to their leadership and impact over the last six decades.
Principal’s Circle
This giving level honors the work and dedication of the school leaders who have helped challenge and inspire thousands of students over the last six decades.
St. James Circle
The St. James Circle derives its name from the St. James Episcopal Church in historic Marietta, the location where the School was originally founded in 1957 as St. James Day School by Father Joseph T. Walker.
Waterman Circle
The Waterman Circle recognizes the school’s 1971 move to the location on Waterman Street, south of Marietta Square, when the School officially became the Joseph T. Walker School.
“From our very first interaction with the Admissions team, we knew The Walker School was where we wanted our son to be. There is a genuinely warm, supportive environment here that we didn’t experience at other institutions we visited. It was important for us to select a school that would be academically challenging, while at the same time, provide opportunities to explore other interests, make new friends, and participate in sports. Our son has definitely found that at Walker, and we couldn’t be more pleased. Being able to support the School, beyond our tuition dollars, is important to our family. We see the School doing so much in order to enhance the learning experiences for its students. Giving to The Walker Fund allows us to express our appreciation to the administration, staff, and faculty. We are incredibly grateful for all they do, each and every day, for our son.” The Zuluaga Family – Juan, Wendy, Alejandro '21, and Q-bo

Why I give... “I moved schools a lot and Walker was the first school that I felt ‘at home,’ where I had a sense of community… and I made a lot of fond memories. I came back to tour Walker a few years ago and really connected with the capital project. It showed Walker was not only moving forward but is here to stay as a long-term fixture in the community with an established reputation. I’ve always believed in the importance of philanthropy and am proud to invest in the school’s future.” Peter Vinelli '90 Owner, International Stock Food Corporation

“Walker is such a special place to us for various reasons. If we had to use one word to describe Walker it would be – supportive. From teachers tutoring after school, to early intervention learning support, to open lines of communication, to guidance with friendship challenges, to providing a safe environment to make mistakes and learn from them, Walker has embraced our children for who they are and continues to encourage them to be their best self. (Lower School Faculty members) Kristen Moffett, Sarah Null, Sue Rittenberg, and Marla Zimmerman, amongst many others, have gone above and beyond in support of our children and are the very reason that we feel like Walker is the right place for us. Every child has different strengths and challenges, all of which are embraced and supported in an effort to guide them down the right path – their own path. Giving to The Walker Fund gives us peace of mind that the current and future needs of the children are constantly being taken into consideration. It ensures the School has the necessary resources to give them a brighter future, which is imperative to us. Going beyond that, Walker has done a tremendous amount for our family and we would like to see it do the same for others. Our gifts to The Walker Fund helps us do just that.” The Shah Family – Dev, Pam, Maya '27, and Neil '29 21

Why I give... “Like most Walker students, I learned the value of being a self-starter, of always looking for the next opportunity, and of not being afraid to take on a challenge. These traits served me well in school and help me stand out at work today…” Why I support Walker as an alumnus: I support Walker because I believe that my education and experiences there played a large part in forming who I am as a person. I had countless number of opportunities to better myself as a student at Walker, from cross country and track & field to Honor Council, Academic Quiz Bowl, and Robotics. Not many people that I know can say they had the same breadth of experiences in high school that I was privileged to have, and I think I have a leg up on others because of that. I was asked if I could come up with a single area or faculty member that stands out or defined my Walker experience and the truth is that I can’t. I can’t pick out a single faculty member, class, or activity that stands out as the superlative because there’s not one. All of my teachers were excellent, all of my classes were fun and useful (even if I didn’t see that until later), and every activity I participated in has left its impact on me now. Walker is a set of amazing experiences that I am very grateful to have had, and I support Walker because I want others to be able to say the same. How Walker prepared me for life: I came out of Walker without really realizing what a gift I had been given. To me at the time, Walker was a great experience, sure, but I didn’t realize that it was a unique experience for high school. Apparently, not every school offers 25+ AP classes, or has such small class sizes, or offers as many options for students to pursue different subjects and levels of study. When I was at Walker, I just figured that was how a lot of schools operated. Walker prepared me extremely well for college – I was able to exempt a lot of first year classes and could easily understand the material from the classes I still had to take. Even more importantly though, the lessons I learned at Walker are still with me for life after school. Like most Walker students, I learned the value of being a self-starter, of always looking for the next opportunity, and of not being afraid to take on a challenge. These traits served me well in school and help me stand out at work, and made me comfortable with coaching a first-year robotics team. Walker prepared me well for school, of course, but the experiences I had there still shape my life even after school. That’s why I continue to support Walker. Vinnie Paglioni '12 graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear & Radiological Engineering from Georgia Tech in May 2017. He is currently serving as a nuclear engineer for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine, writing procedures and answering problems that arise during maintenance of nuclear submarines. In his free time he enjoys coaching the LEGO robotics team at Dover Middle School in New Hampshire.

“We visited several private schools in the Atlanta area as Allyson was preparing to enter 9th grade. From the moment she met the faculty at Walker and some of the students, she said “Dad, I just have a really good vibe about this place, everyone is so nice!” I could not agree more. We have met some of the most gracious and kind families since we became a part of the Walker community. Walker did a fantastic job preparing my children for college, both academically and culturally. With Allyson getting a full tuition scholarship to Vanderbilt and Sean getting a full tuition scholarship to NYU, as a family we could not have asked for better outcomes. Katie Arjona, Dr. Cindy Schafer, Rick Holifield, Robyn Johnson, former faculty member Brad Brown, and (retired) Upper School Principal Bob Murphy, played such important roles for both Allyson and Sean during their time at Walker. The time that they invested in the kids was truly amazing and immeasurable. Each one of them touched our lives in their unique way and left a lasting impression of what it means to “give.” Their gifts to us as a family are a big reason why we choose to donate to Walker. We are so proud to be a part of the Walker community. I will never forget what they have done for my family! The money I give back could never repay what Walker has given to us, but we sincerely hope other families get to experience the same blessings.” The Nesmith Family – Sandra Fitzgerald, Alex, Allyson '17, and Sean '18

“We give to The Walker School because education has always been a high priority to our family. In Walker, we found the ideal institution that educated, inspired, and helped to develop our three boys into the excellent men they are today. The importance of education was instilled in us by our parents. My father always reminded everyone that after losing everything when they emigrated from Cuba in the early 1960’s, their education was the only thing that could not be taken away. At Walker, our three sons received a comprehensive, lifelong, wellrounded education: solid academics, excellent performing arts programs, challenging athletics, and caring counseling. The size of the school enabled them to develop close relationships with talented faculty and counselors. In athletics, the role-model coaches allowed our sons to achieve or be part of state championship-level wrestling and soccer programs. Now that our granddaughter is a student in the Lower School, our support of Walker continues. We see her excitement with the math, STEM, arts, and music programs, and her love for her teachers. We are again experiencing the satisfaction of knowing that she is getting the well-rounded education our family wants and Walker provides.” Walker Parents of Alumni - Orlando and Vicki Arjona with granddaughter Lucy '27. “The Walker School is a special place. Not only does the School provide academic rigor and a strong sense of community, it also simultaneously manages to contribute to the growth and development of every child as an individual. While we love all of the courses and programs that Walker offers, we love most that our child gets to explore new things and be a part of something that is preparing her not only for college, but for life as well. Since joining the Lower School years ago, we have watched as Walker’s approach with the students deliberately shifts each year to teach greater autonomy, independence, and responsibility. However, the faculty and staff somehow manage to continue to be nurturing, encouraging, firm guideposts for the students. We could not ask for more as parents. Our time as a part of Walker has been everything we had hoped for and we are confident that we have made the right choice for our family.”

Giving to Walker There are many opportunities to support The Walker School’s outstanding programs and people, nearly all of which are taxdeductible. Below you will find a number of methods by which you can contribute to the Annual Fund, the school’s most important fundraising effort, as well as other forms of giving that support the school. If you have any questions regarding the information below, please contact the Advancement Office.
Cash Contributions
Pledges
Gifts of Stock and Securities
The Walker School accepts and encourages pledge commitments to the Annual Fund. Pledges must be paid as a one-time payment or in installments by June 30, the end of the school’s fiscal year.
Unrestricted gifts of cash are the most popular and easiest way to support Walker. The majority of gifts made to the Annual Fund come in the form of cash or check. A gift of cash receives the most generous federal income tax deduction available for charitable contributions. Gifts or pledge payments can be made online by credit card or mailed directly to the school.
Gifts of stocks or securities benefit you and the school. A gift of appreciated securities held for more than one year is one of the most tax-wise ways to make a donation. You
receive the immediate fair market value as a charitable deduction and can avoid capital gains tax. To ensure that the stock is properly accounted for, have your broker contact Assistant Director of Advancement, Cathy LaClaire, at (678) 581-6904 or cathy.laclaire@thewalkerschool.org, regarding the stock transfer.
Matching Gifts
Many employers will match and in some cases triple the amount of your contribution to Walker through a matching gift program. Contact your Human Resources department or the Advancement Office to find out if this opportunity is available through your employer.
Planned Gifts
Walker encourages and appreciates future gifts made through one’s estate. Bequests are the most common way for donors to make their ultimate gift to the school. If you are interested in learning more about gift planning, we are happy to help you determine how and when to make a gift and with what assets that can, in some cases, benefit both you and the school in your lifetime.

Welcome to the Family! We are thrilled to introduce The Walker Fund, the School’s new approach to annual giving! Like the Annual Fund before it, the new Walker Fund provides critical support, beyond tuition dollars, to meet the needs of our students and faculty. However, through this new Family of Funds, donors can now designate their gift to the area(s) of the School’s operating budget that is most meaningful to them. The Family of Funds allows donors to give to the following areas:
