EMMY EDITION!
RAMBLING REPORTER Spicey: Not Going Hollywood In an evening packed with the likes of Robert De Niro, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, who would have thought that Sean Spicer would be the star that popped? Following his appearance during host Stephen Colbert’s opener, the Trump casualty got a kiss on the cheek from James Corden, posed for pics with Dolly Parton and Alec Baldwin, and partied at the Governors Ball
and Netflix’s party at NeueHouse. Despite thunderous criticism on social media — Keith Olbermann called the Emmys giving him a cameo “unforgivable” — the ex-spokesperson said it was “an honor” to be included. However, Spicer says Hollywood isn’t his next stop. “We’ve got speaking engagements lined up, and I’m entertaining business opportunities,” he tells THR. “I just haven’t thought that far in advance.”

Colbert’s Scrapped Sketch Boosts Booze Sales One of the biggest complaints about the 2016 Emmy Awards was the lack of alcoholic drinks in the Microsoft Theater lobby during the show. Despite preshow cocktails, guests were left grumbling the rest of the evening when the bar was limited to water, soda and light snacks (Caesar salad, anyone?). This year, guests have Colbert (and telecast executive producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss) to thank for quenching their thirst. Chris Licht — who

produced the Sept. 17 show and is an exec producer on Colbert’s Late Show — tells THR that the host planned a sketch that involved booze. The skit was scrapped, but since the liquor license already had been procured, producers opted to keep the booze flowing. Not everyone was thrilled. The Crown star Matt Smith was overheard saying, “This is fucking ridiculous,” when he saw the long lines and that it wasn’t an open bar (beer and cocktails cost $12; champagne, $25 to $35). Still, the lobby was packed all night long.

RAMBLING REPORTER continued Jon Hamm’s Emmy Texts to Elisabeth Moss Elisabeth Moss was nominated six times for her work on Mad Men without winning, but longtime co-star Jon Hamm, who watched the show from home, had a strong sense that her role on The Handmaid’s Tale would get recognized. “I told her many times, ‘This is a really wonderful piece of work.’ I was incredibly pleased for her,” Hamm tells THR. “I
texted her right after she won and said, ‘Congratulations, now turn around and get back out there,’ because I had a feeling they were going to win again.” And they did. Hamm ended up getting face time with Moss during Hulu’s afterparty at Otium, as execs toasted the first drama series win for a streaming service. “Mad Men started 10 years ago, and there was no streaming or iPhones,” says Hamm. “The world moves pretty quick. It’s a bizarre new landscape, and I think we’re still figuring it out in many ways.”

Will Veep Pull a Game of Thrones for the 2018 Emmys? While accepting Veep’s Emmy for best comedy series, David Mandel joked that he was “out of a job. … If anyone hears of anything, I’m looking for movie work, but I’ll do television.” In reality, Mandel’s hands are currently full with the upcoming final season of the HBO political comedy. “I do have a lot of work to do,” he tells THR. “Veep will take me through to June or July, and then I’ll figure it out.” The showrunner says that he and his

team, which includes producer and star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, will operate on a more lenient schedule this year. “We are definitely taking a little longer with the final season,” he says, adding that meeting the usual premiere date of April is “not our first concern” — even if that means the show would miss the eligibility period for the 2018 Emmys. If Veep isn’t in the running, best comedy and lead actress could be open for the taking — the show has won three consecutive years and LouisDreyfus, six.

And for the past three years, he and his AMC colleagues have been personae non gratae at CAA due to an increasingly nasty legal dispute with ex-The Walking Dead showrunner Frank Darabont and

the agency over profits from the show. Lo and behold, on Sept. 15, new Hulu exec Stillerman was welcomed into a party that was off-limits to AMC execs, surprising bystanders as he pressed the flesh with talent and top agents at the pre-Emmys Bouchon fete. A Crazily Coincidental Tux Tale Saturday Night Live writer Nick Kocher turned to Twitter for help with an Emmy fashion crisis. After landing Sept. 15 at LAX, Kocher realized that he had grabbed the wrong garment bag.

Repost this.” His post got retweeted more than 4,000 times until Matt Lapin, a producer of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, tweeted: “DUDE! Three nights before celebrating their Emmy wins, Alec Baldwin (1) and Sterling K. Brown (4) joined nominees Allison Janney (3), Felicity Huffman (8), Bob Odenkirk (4) and Geoffrey Rush (9) along with top TV execs including NBC’s Bob Greenblatt (12) and Jennifer Salke (12) and AMC’s Josh Sapan (6) and Charlie Collier (11) , plus top showrunners (The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’s Chris Licht, Modern Family’s Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd) for THR and SAG-AFTRA’s joint Sept. 14 fete at Jean-Georges in the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills. Hosted by THR editorial director Matthew Belloni (12) and SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris (3) and sponsored by American Airlines, Breguet and Dacor, the party served as the unofficial kickoff for Emmy weekend. Master of None’s Lena Waithe (also a winner Sept. 17), Handmaid’s Tale’s Samira Wiley, This Is Us’ Chrissy Metz (5) and Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard (13) boogied late into the evening to beats by DJ Myles Hendrik. Brown said he never expected This Is Us to be in the awards conversation: “The fact that we got a seat at the table for that party is really, really something special,” he said before he joined co-stars Metz and Justin Hartley on the dance floor. Although Janney already is a seven-time Emmy winner, the Mom star — who scored her first-ever comedy lead actress nom — explained that this year’s ceremony would hold special meaning with “an unbelievable category of women.” As Emmy season inched to the finish line, Brian Tyree Henry (2), who stars on nominated series Atlanta and got a nom for his This Is Us guest arc (but lost to Gerald McRaney, also at the soiree), said a highlight of the experience was the camaraderie among nominees. “We all care about each other’s work and we’re all really happy for each other,” he said. “It’s been one of the best things.” — KATE STANHOPE

How to Rock a Crown Braid
H
ollywood’s obsession with braids has yet to simmer as celebs have managed to find another new way to make a statement with the weaved style. “Crown braids are a fun alternative to more contrived updos and they give a girlie, angelic vibe to any look,” says hairstylist Damien Carney, who has worked with Olivia Munn and Krysten Ritter. “Plus, the style adds drama, volume and texture to tresses while pulling hair up to put focus on pretty features like high cheekbones, a chiseled jawline or a long neck.” Carney suggests placing the head-crowning style at least 2 to 3 inches up from the hairline to reap the braids’ benefits. He also tips to spritz a dry shampoo (like Batiste Original Dry Shampoo, $6, target.com) onto strands before braiding to give hair some grip that will keep the braid from slipping down or falling flat. Read on for more tips on how to slay like these braided beauties in the head-encircling style.
Back & Sleek? Yes! “The pulled-back style of KATE BOSWORTH’s center-set braid created a pretty frame around her face,” says the star’s hairstylist Bridget Brager. To get the look, she weaved a Dutch braid across the crown, starting on the right and moving over to the left. She then secured the end with an elastic, tugged lightly so the braid wasn’t too tight and pinned the tail to the back of her head.
54 September 11, 2017
Deconstructed? Yes!
“We wanted something that would look good throughout the entire day,” says LUCY HALE’s hairstylist, Lacy Redway, on the more laid-back take on the top-braided style. For the effortless ’do, she braided four to five small fishtail braids at the crown and secured the ends with elastic. “I used my fingers to open the braids up in order to achieve the right amount of flyaways to give a more livedin look.”
Low & Loose? Too Milkmaid! MEREDITH HAGNER’s loose locks and bulky low-hanging braid left two awkwardly contrasting hair textures for a look that skewed more “Yodel-Ay-HeeHoo” than Yasss Queen! Plus, the ear-skimming style optically widened the Search Party star’s face. Notes Carney: “It can be easily modified by lifting the braid up and tightening the sides with some bobby pins.”
