letter from the editor he culture behind Halloween is the best—the costumes, decorations and traditions. It’s the one time of year to celebrate sin and darkness just before the purity of the holidays. This issue, it only felt right to dive into the spookiest god of all: Hades god of the underworld, death and darkness. This theme was much easier to collect submissions for than last issue. Don’t get me wrong, I still had to press for submissions, but after explaining to countless people what a literary arts magazine is, I know that Apollo will (hopefully) grow over time as Westside’s other publications have. I love Halloween, and so did Craze Magazine. Over the course of the magazine’s run, it produced six Halloween-themed issues. With the death of Craze and birth of Apollo, it only felt right to continue this past tradition into my new project. So, for this issue, I brought back some of that past Craze culture from the dead, but I’ll probably do that a lot. Enjoy! - editor-in-chief, vinny nelson

intro
ades is the son of Cronus and Rhea, but soon after birth, he was swallowed by his father, Cronus. When Hades escaped his father’s stomach, along with his brothers Zeus and Poseidon, they joined Titanomachy. The war between the Titans and gods lasted for a decade and when it was over, the three brothers divided the universe. Zeus took the sky, Poseidon took the sea and Hades took to the underworld. As time passed, Hades grew lonely in the underworld. He fell in love with Persephone,
H
goddess of vegetation and daughter of Demeter. When she rejected him, Hades decided to kidnap her and take her to the underworld. Demeter was extremely upset that Persephone had been kidnapped, so Zeus suggested that, during harvest season, Persephone would spend time with her mother, and at the start of winter would return to Hades and the underworld. Hades is the god of the underworld, the dead, darkness and riches. He should not be thought as a devil or an evil force, even though he is often perceived as one.

selena, age 14
ades walked through the dark depths of the underworld, watching fires burn, lost souls try to find their way and skeleton armies obey his every command. Suddenly, a skeleton ran over to him, carrying a note for his next victim. He took the note and carefully read it. “Selena, age 14, recently fell into a deep hole and was knocked unconscious after a brutal car crash nearby.” Hades went to his castle of death and despair. In his room, he went through special costumes trying to decide what to wear. “Aha!” he said. “I’ll dress as the grim reaper, I haven’t dressed like him in a while.” He put on the costume, made of pure darkness, and was ready to ascend to the surface. On his skeleton horse, Hades opened a crack in the earth, which locals later believed to be the Valdivia earthquake. He made it to the surface and started looking for the victim that fit his description list. When he got to Selena, he saw the tipped over car still smoking with toxic fumes. He went over to Selena and touched her. He saw the different ways to kill her: blood loss, suffocation or brain trauma. Selena would have her death soon, for she was almost dead already. As he was about choose her death, the paramedics arrived before he could actually

kill her. His anger had finally ignited. His costume was now engulfed in flames as he watched his victim nearly cheat death. Hades snapped his fingers and a skeleton army rose to the earth. They marched to him holding a box which contained a powerful item Hades hadn’t used in an eternity, the Helm of Darkness. He put the hat on his head and gained strength and power. His body changed into a shadow and his very presence now could cause a human to have an extreme panic attack because of the fear he radiated. He walked toward the ambulance. Immediately, the paramedics fainted after they saw his ghastly shadow. He materialized a shadow scythe into his hand and went inside the ambulance. He saw Selena, still in a coma, lying on her back with a faint smile. He raised his scythe and slashed at Selena, ripping her soul instantly out of her body. Selena’s soul went underground completely, until it sunk in the River Styx. Hades was finally victorious. Selena hadn’t cheated death. He and his skeleton army went back to the underworld, where he hosted a party which everyone could attend. As he sat on his throne watching his guests dance and eat pomegranates, he began thinking to himself, who will be his next victim be?

y r r o W & r Fea
On the outermost part of my window There crawls a creature, Its hands clawing the glass. This animal is only ever there in the future. However, future is today. Hanging on my shoulder, There is another one. Anxiety and doubt, it causes. Not consistently present, Its powers slip through my brain Altering my thoughts.
The dark, sharks and clowns only to name a few. You can never avoid them, they arise at certain times. Especially at night, or when you’re alone. Am I right? Am I wrong? The creature crawls in through my ear, Making itself at home Paying rent to cause more problems. I’ve been warned to not do anything, They are only afraid of themselves. And what is hidden outside my window It is not a fear of the dark. Rather a fear of what it beholds. Ignore it, and let it go. Therapists and Psychologists call it anxiety But it is only just a worry And it can’t be that bad? Can’t it? These are the monsters you were never warned about. Fear & Worry.
