Local group lands $10,000 windfall in TAB Great Chase Grand Final Go Commando wins at huge odds of $24.50 over Charmed An Taken and Johnny Wishbone.

hoisting equipment,” he said. Broadmeadows Disability Services is in the process of changing its name to BDS Disability Services, which stands for Belong, Develop and Succeed. The organisation offers a variety of services to around 260 people with disabilities including respite and school holiday programs.
Photo - Clint Anderson Broadmeadows Disability Services landed a $10,000 windfall in the TAB Great Chase Grand Final (525m) on 24 October at The Meadows. It all came about as reserve Go Commando (Bombastic Shiraz – Especially) caused a huge upset, claiming the $47,000 first prize and delivering the biggest win yet for both Carnegie breeder/owner Peter Knott and Lara trainer Jason Sharp. More than 500 people tied to around 50 Victorian groups that care for the intellectually and physically disabled attended the Grand Final, with eight of the organisations being randomly drawn on the day and allocated a runner in the big race. While Broadmeadows Disability Services walked away with the biggest prize, the seven other groups collected $2000 on the day, equating to $24,000 being donated to Victoria’s disability sector. A large group of clients and carers from Broadmeadows Disability Centre were at the Grand Final, however they left the track prior to the main event. As such, Go
Commando, accompanied by Sharp’s wife Jessica, daughter Mia, and Go Commando’s handler Dale Chapman, paid a visit to the centre soon after the race. “There were about 25 or 30 of us at the Grand Final today, but unfortunately we had to leave early and we missed the race,” said Acting CEO of Broadmeadows Disability Services, Simon McDowall. “We’ve been coming to the Great Chase heats and final at The Meadows every year for the past six or seven years, but have never won any money before. Luckily we are located only five minutes from the track so it was great that Go Commando could come and visit us.” McDowall said a decision on how to spend the $10,000 would be made over the coming weeks. “We’re like most other not-for-profit organisations in that it is always a struggle for money, but we’ll certainly put this to good use. We recently opened up a small centre in Craigieburn, so we have been talking about purchasing a bus to and from there, or maybe we’ll spend it on upgrading our
McDowall was full of praise for the Great Chase initiative, which has seen more than $600,000 donated around 100 Victorian disability groups over the past 16 years. “Our guys always enjoy the experience of the Great Chase days. They really feel like they are part of the greyhound racing community for the day and are often getting on the stage with the band and singing and dancing. We often come across initiatives for the disability sector that end up being a flash in the pan and they disappear very quickly, so the commitment from GRV for the past 16 years to the Great Chase is quite admirable,” he said. Peter Knott was a proud man after the race, admitting his greyhound had made the most of an unlikely opportunity. “He was a reserve in his semi-final (running second) and a reserve in the Grand Final, so luck was on our side. He has been beginning well and racing competitively in the city against experienced greyhounds, so against less experienced greyhounds today he was able to capitalise,” he said. A total of $50,000 was donated to groups throughout the 2018 TAB Great Chase, as Victoria’s 13 race clubs each held a Community Day for local organisations during September/October.

She is from a litter of seven named who all won and shared 54 wins between them. She didn’t do a lot of racing by today’s standards, racing 29 times, for six wins and ten placings, winning at Sandown, 29.70, 34.17) and The Meadows, 30.77, 30.09 and 30.18. She was runner up in the 2017 Group 1 Maturity and Group 3 South Australian Oaks and was a finalist in the Group 3 Cranbourne Puppy Classic. Quality not quantity is the order with this litter, Suzanne, so good luck with these two well bred youngsters.

Talking Breeding - Victoria Talking Breeding Victoria Eight for Walk Hard ROCHESTER breeder Trevor Anlezark has a nice litter of eight pups on the list this week by the under-rated sire, Walk Hard (September 2010 Bit Chili x Miss Bling). He is one of many sires who don’t get the opportunities their results demand, in today’s highly congested and competitive stud market. His offspring from limited opportunities continue to do well and he has a winner somewhere on our metropolitan winners summary. Trevor’s litter of three dogs and five bitches are from the well bred bitch, Jodie’s Knee (February 2013 Cosmic Rumble x Fire Stricker), whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x Tasman Queen (Where’s Pedro x Juney Reltub). She is from a litter of ten, who all won races, including, Dougie’s Cactus, 3 wins, Omamori, 1 win, Sonny’s Tas, 14 wins, Tat Bazza, 3 wins, Tat Duke, 12 wins, Tat Jocko. 7 wins, Tat Minnie, 3 wins, Tat Molly, 3 wins and Wolfpack, 9 wins. Her record shows she raced 48 times, for five wins and 16 placings, winning five races over 450 metres at Shepparton (25.15). Worth noting she was placed over 525 metres at The Meadows from just a handful of starts there.

Copley’s Corner Aston Kimetto’s ‘Sweet’ Geelong Success
.13 of a length in 25.45sec, his eighth win from 15 starts. “In the early stages it was a bit of a worry, he had every runner in front of him and I didn’t think he was positioned well enough,” Jason Thompson said. “Heading into the first corner he was still in last position, it was a huge effort for him to come away with this win. He is getting a lot smarter now. He used to take every opportunity to head to the fence but he was able to win this Cup from the outside.” In other feature action from Geelong Cup night, Pure White Evil (Ashlee Terry) won the Weddermore Plumbing Geelong Derby in 30.10sec, while Mepunga Bella (Jeff Britton) won the Millers Muzzles Geelong Oaks in 29.91sec. ___________________________________________

Powerhouse youngster Aston Kimetto brought back memories of his champion mother Sweet It Is with a barnstorming last-to-first victory in the $67,000 Group 2 Pet Panels Geelong Gold Cup Final (460m) on Friday night. Trained by Seona Thompson and raced by Ray Borda, last year’s Melbourne Cup-winning combination, Aston Kimetto is bred in the purple, with his dam Sweet It Is one of the greatest stayers Australian greyhound racing has seen and renowned for her paralysing finishing bursts. “I think this was his best win to date,” said a delighted Jason Thompson, Seona’s husband. “To come from as far behind as he did and get there on the line over 460 metres is a huge effort.” Bred by Grovedale breeder John Finn, Aston Kimetto wasted little time living up to his regal bloodlines when winning the Group 3 Warragul St Leger (460m) in August at just his sixth start, after which Jason Thompson labelled him as one of the most exciting dogs the Thompson family has had. The boom prospect was then beaten at his next five starts, with box manners his worst enemy, however he’s now back on track after claiming the second Group trophy of his brief career in the $47,000 to-the-winner Geelong Cup. Aston Kimetto made his first appearance at Geelong in the heats, when scoring in 25.56sec, and after drawing box three for Friday’s finale he shared the second line of betting at $5.90 with Slingshot Hammer, behind $2.20 favourite Orson Allen. Aston Kimetto settled a clear last as outsider Speed Star ($15.10) led, with punters’ elect Orson Allen perfectly poised in second. Orson Allen hit the lead in the home straight and a deserved Group breakthrough seemed to be within his grasp, before Aston Kimetto sprouted wings to arrive in the shadows of the post, edging out Orson Allen by
Sally’s Champagne Topgun Stayers Triumph By Gerard Guthrie and Andrew Copley Champagne Sally’s upset all-the-way victory in the Group 2 TAB Topgun Stayers (725m) was the highlight of an unforgettable Topgun night at The Meadows for Queensland couple Ray and Mary Burman. The Burmans celebrated a memorable family double at Saturday’s showpiece meeting, courtesy of their homebred Barcia Bale – Bizarre Barbie litter. Champagne Sally ran her hand-picked rivals ragged in the $75,000 to-the-winner Stayers invitational, one race after litter sister Magic Hornet had also led throughout in a heat of the Group 1 Hume Cup over 600m. Champagne Sally was making her second appearance in an invitation-only distance race at The Meadows, having also started at huge odds ($33.80) in the Group 1 Zoom Top in February. On that occasion she finished a close third to champions Fanta Bale and Rippin’ Sam. Drawn in box four in the Topgun Stayers, Champagne Sally started at $27.60, with in-form NSW visitor Poco Dorado, winner of her previous five starts in her home state, the $2.70 favourite from box five. Champagne Sally led Poco Dorado and produced a faultless front-running exhibition to defeat the favourite by 2.33 lengths in 42.36sec, leading home a rare interstate feature race trifecta on Victorian soil, with another NSW female in Ebby Ripper filling third place. It was a breakthrough success at Group level for Champagne Sally, which has now won 26 of her 84 starts. “I’m not surprised she won like she did. I expected her to lead or be close to it,” Burman said. “I’ve never trained a Group winner before and Champagne Sally is a deserving winner. We bred and owned Technoman, who won the Hume Cup (in 2007). He was trained by Kel Greenough. Burman thanked his wife, Mary, for “putting up with my training endeavours.”

Copley’s Corner Poke The Bear’s Topgun Romp
trouncing Hasten Slowly by an ever-widening 5.96 By Gerard Guthrie and Andrew Copley lengths in 29.74sec. It was a fourth second at Group 1 level for Jeff Britton’s Hasten Slowly, another son of Fernando Bale, while Dave Geall’s Up Hill Jill didn’t surrender her Topgun crown without a great fight, finishing third. Owner/breeders Darren Puleio and his father Michael have enjoyed a wonderful 2018 with their Fernando Bale – Nicki Fields litter, with Poke The Bear’s litter brother Out Of Range claiming a Group 1 double earlier in the year, taking out the Silver Chief and National Derby. “I’m in shock. To have a dog this good is a dream come true,” Darren Puleio said. “Dad and I have been breeding greyhounds for a long time and have been trying to improve our line and it feels like we’re finally there. “But it’s a team effort. The Thompsons do a great job, as do the breakers, as well as a girl named Lisa who Poke The Bear with (from left), Holly & Sophie Thompson, helps us with the pups at home.” Darren and Michael Puleio, Jason & Seona Thompson. Poke The Bear has now won 28 of his 49 starts Photo - Jaseon McKeown, BlueStream Pictures. and it was his second Group success, having won the Prodigious talent Poke The Bear has long promised Traralgon Cup back in January. “He has his moments of brilliance, that’s for sure,” to claim a Group 1 trophy and he delivered in spades Michael Puleio offered. “If he begins, they won’t touch on one of Australian greyhound racing’s greatest him, but if he misses it, he’s got to fight for it. He began stages when careering away with the star-studded like a bullet in his semi of the Million Dollar Chase, but TAB Topgun (525m) at The Meadows on Saturday he missed it in the final. But I was rapt for Peter and night. In a sensational display, Poke The Bear trounced the Jodie Lagogiane (trainers of Million Dollar Chase best sprinters in the land to claim the Topgun’s winner Mystic Riot), and we won the Consolation with $150,000 winner’s purse, emulating his superstar sire Poke The Bear’s litter brother True Talent (trained by Fernando Bale, which won the invitational feature in Jason Mackay) at least. 2015. We’ve had an unbelievable run in 2018, and It was Seona Thompson’s second Group victory in tonight is a real big win. Watching the race I nearly as many nights, with Aston Kimetto storming home to fainted. Poke The Bear is a wonderful dog.” win the Geelong Gold Cup. “Unfortunately, Out Of Range has been retired Poke The Bear gave the powerful Thompson after hurting his stopper bone. He’ll be going to stud and kennel a third Topgun triumph, with Seona’s husband standing with the Thompsons.” Jason having won the race with No Intent (2001) and —————————————————————— Whisky Assassin (2004). Coming off a luckless fourth in the Million Dollar Chase in Sydney a week earlier, where he started favourite, Poke The Bear was the $3.30 second select in the Topgun from a testing draw in six, with Andrea Dailly’s rails runner Dyna Patty heading the market at $2.90. 2017 Topgun heroine Up Hill Jill, striving to create history by becoming the first sprinter to go backto-back in the event, was a $15 outsider, but she was best to begin, clearing Dyna Patty rounding the first turn. Poke The Bear was positioned awkwardly early Champagne Sally didn’t give her rivals a chance in the Topgun but drove through into third and after railing past the Stayers, winning at huge odds - Photo by Hason McKeown gallant Up Hill Jill in the back straight he dashed clear, BlueStream Pictures. Greyhounds in the home Noel McMahon (Admin) Warmer Weather Finally some warmer weather in Victoria. But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so:
Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active
