GAP News Adoption Fees Waived for GAP’s 3-day Greyhound Adoption Bonanza January 18 to 20 GAP has also decided to waive the adoption fees for the weekend. While GAP will still be following the same process to match greyhounds with the right owners, when a suitable adopter is found, they will be able to take home their new greyhound free of charge. If you are interested in adopting a greyhound, GAP’s Adoption Days are the perfect opportunity to meet some amazing dogs and learn more about this beautiful breed. GAP helps retired racing greyhounds, as well as greyhounds who have never raced, find forever homes. During the program, the greyhounds complete pet-skills training, such as walking on a lead and being in a home, and a temperament assessment to ensure they are safe around smaller dogs. If a greyhound requires more time to adjust to life after racing, they are paired with a foster carer who meets their specific needs and can help them settle into a home. Once the greyhound has passed the program, they are given a green GAP collar and are ready for adoption. GAP is the number one match-making program for greyhounds, as such we are committed to ensuring all the connections made through GAP are well suited for both the greyhound and the new
owner. While GAP strives to achieve a perfect match from the outset, all adoptions are subject to a threeweek trial period and greyhounds are always welcome back should you no longer be able to provide a home for them. If you are interested in attending the adoption bonanza, please register for the event online. It is free to attend an adoption day and you will be sent more information, including a list of greyhounds available for adoption, closer to the date. Please note: Every day is an adoption day at GAP. If you are unable to attend the event in January, you can still visit our locations in Seymour (Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 4pm, and Saturday by appointment) and Baxter (Saturday and Sunday, 10am – 2pm by appointment only) to meet and adopt greyhounds http://gap.grv.org.au/events/greyhound-adoption-day/

Manolitsis then completed his heat double in the third run-off when Italian Plastic, a Group 2 Geelong Cup finalist last year, prevailed in a thrilling three-way blanket finish. Copley’s Corner with Gerard Guthrie Barooga Brett’s Silver Chief The son of Barcia Bale and Destini Gold went through the entire series undefeated after his all-the-way 29.73 win to claim the $100,000-to-the-winner final, recording splits of 5.05 and 17.68 before defeating young South Australian chaser Sennachie and NSW chaser Fantastic Yankee for the 16th victory of his career. Trained by Brooke Ennis, the blue chaser has had an outstanding two months of racing, winning a Melbourne Cup Prelude in 29.08 at Sandown, the Melbourne Cup Sprint in 29.28 and now his first Group 1 classic. The victory pushed his prizemoney to over $214,000 and his form at the Broadmeadows circuit makes him one of the leading contenders going into next month’s Australian Cup Carnival. Ennis was full of praise for her new star Group 1 winner after his sensational victory. “On behalf of (husband) Jamie and I, we are really thrilled to win a race like this. We are so proud of ‘Bretty Boy’ as he has been brilliant throughout this series. We were certainly happy with the box draw and once again he didn’t let us down.” Poke The Bear crowned Meadows GOTY By The Meadows
The son of Fernando Bale and Nicki Fields was breathtaking at the Broadmeadows circuit, taking out the Group 1 Topgun over Hasten Slowly in a sizzling 29.76 to win the first Group 1 race of his career. Nine days later, the white and fawn chaser ran down tearaway leader Up Hill Jill to claim the Group 3 Silver Bullet in 29.87, showcasing his speed and determination, which has been a hallmark of his amazing career to date. The Seona Thompson-trained, Darren Puleio-owned star also finished fourth in the Group 1 Temlee in February, and ended 2018 with eight wins and two seconds from 13 starts over the 525 metres at The Meadows. Dyna Patty finished second in GOTY calculations with seven wins (including the Group 1 Maturity) at The Meadows, while Dyna Dean – the Group 1 Rookie Rebel winner – was third.

Noel Good night from the McMarvel littlies
Vardis Advice please! We are interested in adopting a grey soon to keep our whippet pup Trixie company. We would prefer a girl but have been told by GAP that they won’t allow that as they don’t recommend two female dogs living together. I’m not saying GAP are wrong but very interested if you have tried this and it worked or if you can explain more as to why it’s a bad idea? Thanks and photo for cuteness

Noel McMahon (Admin) Warmer Weather Finally some warmer weather in Victoria. But irrespective of where you live be mindful when walking your greyhounds that they may take some time to adjust to the heat Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in temperatures above 25 degrees so:
Ditch the coats Keep the walks shorter until they adjust Walk earlier in cooler temperatures Watch for signs of distress Keep your dogs hydrated and Make sure they have water immediately they get home And watch out for snakes in long grass because they are active. - 29 -
Greyhounds in the home FOSTER A GREYHOUND: There are many greyhounds who need a little more assistance to help them settle into pet life They fall into two categories Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track and need help to pass their GAP assessment OR Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their GAP assessment These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the only difference is that need a little more help to transition into pet life The reality is that without foster carers some of these dogs are at risk If you would like to change the life of beautiful dog contact Rebecca and join her team ____________________________________________
