Robert Britton’s diet for greyhounds Recently crowned Victorian Metropolitan Trainer of the Year, Robert Britton says there’s no such thing as “feeding better” by paying more for your greyhound’s food. The Lara trainer insists that the key is to source inexpensive products which provide a balanced diet which, at the same time, eliminates the risk of returning a positive swab which often comes from contaminated knackery meat. “The basic diet we feed our race dogs costs between $2.00 and $2.50 per day, per dog, depending on whether you can buy in bulk,” Britton said. This regally bred son of Brett Lee and Group 1 winner Daydream (Bit Chili x Stresa) won four of his five starts in best of night times and fell at his only other start, ending his track career.

The times he was running were simply amazing and it was a great pity we did not get to see the best of him.

His oldest pups were whelped in June 2016 and are now almost 15 months old and have just returned from the breakers with excellent reports. Can’t wait to see them on the track.

GCA News Shaun Matheson and Alan Amezdroz (SA) Brenton Scott and Geoff Rose (NSW) Executive Officer David Simonette Les Bein (President) Greg Miller (Vice President)

Greyhound Clubs Australia has replaced AGRA. GCA has come about from a need to respond to the changed environment facing greyhound racing today as opposed to what was the case a few years ago. And to meet that "new era" there needed to be a more dynamic organisation that represented all clubs and not those that traditionally had voice and power (generally the well-established city clubs) that formed AGRA. The recent meeting during the Nationals in Brisbane was to focus our intent and charter and I haven't caught up with what came out of those workshops yet. However what I have found in my short time so far is GCA having a major role in building communication between clubs all around Australia, sharing information, contacts, problems and solutions. The Clubs I have spoken to all have enjoyed that opportunity to "co-opt" ideas and resources and I think this will be a practical outcome that GCA can facilitate. GCA wants to also be a part of the decision making process by providing thought and feedback to GA and others, to give clubs and participants input and clearer understanding on important matters such as animal welfare and rehoming, track design and safety etc. GCA provided submissions on the Draft Code of Practice giving a national perspective and support to our Vic members, and we have been very active in advocating and providing practical assistance to the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club with the political problems they are facing. I am sure I have missed a 100 things but we want to be an agile organisation that represents all Clubs respectfully and meaningfully irrespective of size or location. The website will be revamped and rebadged and all the stats etc will continue to be provided by Neil Brown -just as before. David Simonette

Greyhound Weekly will continue to publish all GCA Group race reports, breeding statistics, and all other news.

GCA GREYHOUND OF THE MONTH AUGUST 2017 “JURY”

Jury in action winning the National Sprint (Pic Box 1 Photography)

Tony Brett received the best birthday present of his life when boom youngster Jury ($5.30) (Cosmic Chief x Velocity Sheba Mar ’15) took out the Group 1 National Sprint Championship (520m) at Albion Park. The series attracted a stellar field to the Brisbane track including star Victorians Bewildering (Black Magic Opal x Outlandish Feb ’15) and Aston Dee Bee (Barcia Bale x Aston Elle Apr ’15), but when the boxes flew open for the $75,000 to the winner event it was all the local hope which pinged the lids and led all the way in a slick 29.88. South Australian On Fire ($7.20) (Bekim Bale x Alana Blues Dec ’14) flashed home for second, with Aston Dee Bee ($2.80) rounding out the trifecta in third place.

The Inaugural GCA Committee is as follows: Denise Fysh and Rick Stamford (TAS) Noel Reilly and Dennis O'Brien (WA) Greg Miller and Des Dooley (VIC) Les Bein and Gary Heath (QLD)

Special Feature Robert Britton’s diet for greyhounds GRV Website Recently crowned Victorian Metropolitan Trainer of the Year, Robert Britton says there’s no such thing as “feeding better” by paying more for your greyhound’s food. Daily preparation of fresh vegetable soup is the most time-consuming aspect of Britton’s feeding regime, and he believes selecting the right dry food (kibble) is important. “I believe it’s important to look to a balanced diet rather than getting caught up in brand names or advertising. Don’t fall for every new supplement launched onto the market thinking it will improve your dog’s performance,” he said. Britton feeds his greyhounds their main meal of the day in the mornings, while giving them a light snack at night. “I find that feeding in the mornings (9:00 to 9:30am) ensures the dogs settle and rest much better than when they are fed at night. Things are different on race days, however, as I feed them a quarter of their main meal in the morning and the rest when they get home from the track,” he said. He said he feeds his greyhound pups, brood matrons and pet greyhounds exactly the same as he feeds his race dogs.

Nostalgia Looking Back WHERE AND WHEN WAS THIS PHOTO TAKEN?

Got any idea? - If so let us know editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au If you’ve got a story, or photo you would like to see printed here, please let us know, we anxious to share memories from “The good old days”

Stud Books for Sale Rare collection of Australian and New Zealand Greyhound Stud books. 40 volumes from 1972/3 to 2013

E A R L Y E D U C A T I O N $85 Prevention is better than cure, right? With breeding numbers down by around 60%, and an estimated 30 -40% of pups not being named, I would like to start a new service - early education. I'd like to see this become my main, if not only service. I feel it's a critical step our industry has neglected for too long, and with the poor percentages above, its important we become more efficient with what we breed. I'll provide details in a day or so, but basically this program is for 3-9 month old pups, with a minimum of 12 weeks to gain real benefit from the intense one-on-one education. But longer the better! There will be 6 stages of which your pup will go through, all designed to ensure your greyhound is a well-rounded, forward, confident and keen chaser, with his/her prey-drive fully unlocked! They'll still get all the standard rearing, but will also get exposed to the kennel life as well as lots of bullring, box and drag lure work. For older pups, at stages 4, 5, and 6, your hound will be a junior race dog, they'll even compete against another pup behind the drag and on the clock, so that'll be great for syndications to keep clients excited! With early and consistent positive reinforcement, I can safely and confidently offer a full refund on the extra service if (IF) your pup doesn't break-in. That's $15 per week refund, even if you use the full 40 weeks, or minimum 12 weeks. (*conditions apply).

Good condition for their age. $1,000 Email: editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au

Accell Therapy Accell Therapy is gaining popularity in greyhound recovery and performance, however many people do not realise the benefits of utilising this therapy with their breeding animals. Firstly though, a little bit of information maybe beneficial in explaining how the therapy works and the benefits in using it with your breeding stock.Accell therapy is Australian owned and Australian made by CT Healthcare in Brisbane. It has a long history in human therapy spanning over 67 years. The therapy is used extensively in the older generations of our population for joint mobility, muscle issues and circulation problems. It is also widely used by major sporting clubs, Australian army, Australian Institute of sport and many more. This therapy has been tested and registered by the TGA as a Class 2a medical device. The benefits of this therapy include improving circulation and lymphatic drainage, relaxing muscles and improving nerve muscle communication, and Enhancing joint mobility and enabling a natural analgesic effect. This cycling vibration therapy travels very gently and very deeply through 4 feet of bone and 2 to 3 feet of tissue. This enables a very deeply penetrative benefit to all cells through muscles and joints to receive these benefits. This creates momentum in the bloodflow which does not peak until approximately 5 to 8 hours post treatment, giving ongoing benefits well after the therapy session has been completed. Once it has peaked, the benefits will slowly drop back over the following 24 to 48 hours so regular daily sessions are most beneficial. There are many benefits in relation to breeding that can be gained from using AccellTherapy. When a bitch is cycling the benefits of increasing the circulation and lymphatic drainage enhance the natural efficiency of all systems in the body and thereby improving hormone levels and regularity in cycling and all facets of the reproductive system function. We have found that many bitches that are proving difficult becoming pregnant, suddenly become more balanced and able to be impregnated. And additional benefit that is derived from the body working more efficiently and having higher levels of oxygen and nutrients supply through greater blood flow, is the health and well-being of the beach during the pregnancy term. Her ability to feed the foetus during the pregnancy is greatly improved her to her higher levels of health and well-being, making the gestation much more supported by her body. These benefits flow

through to the quality of the milk the bitch produces, to feed after whelping. Anxiety can be an issue leading up to whelping and the Tranquillsage setting on the therapy can be very calming at this time. It lowers the alpha rhythms in the brain to resting levels, thereby calming the bitch naturally. In the event of an Cesarean section being necessary, Accell therapy can be used to generate faster recovery times for the bitch and improve internal circulation and thereby internal warmth of the pups. This reduces the reliance upon heat mats for pups. The Tranquillsage setting can also be used for the ongoing recovery of the bitch whilst feeding to keep her calm and relaxed during this time. We all know how much benefit a calm mother is for raising young. However, it's not all about the girls. You can look after your dog using Accell also The same benefits from improving circulation and lymphatic drainage, flows through to sperm motility and quality from enhanced health and well-being and improved nutrients and oxygen levels. Any muscle soreness or back issues that the dog makes experience during mating can be alleviated and recovered using the therapy to best effect There is a wonderful opportunity to improve the overall quality of your breeding program using this Australian made therapy and dogs can be treated using a therapy mat without needing to sit with each animal during treatment. Due to the depth of therapy penetration through 4 feet of bone and 2 feet of tissue, simply placing a crate on top of the mat will allow transmission of the therapy through this structure to the dog. It works a bit like a conductor. This lets you get on with your jobs while your dog is receiving premium care. It also protects your medical equipment from a chewer or any damage. I offer free consultations to discuss your specific needs so please do not hesitate to contact me for an appointment Leanne Masters-Accell Therapy National Development Manager
