19 22 7 Litters (5.9)

THIS week’s review of litters on the Victorian Litter Registrations list for the week ending 15 December, starts with a nice litter of nine pups by leading national sire Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale). The four dogs and five bitches, registered by one of Victoria’s leading breeders, Barry Smith, from Mepunga East, are from his beautifully bred, dual Group winning bitch, Mepunga Nicky (July 2009 Premier Fantasy* x Mepunga Diamond), whose dam is by Brett Lee x Mepunga Anna (Tonight’s Wish x Mepunga Silk). She is from a litter of eight named, which provided seven winners, led by the prolific winner, Mepunga Geordie, who won 33 races. Her contribution to the litter’s success was 15 wins and five placings from her 25 starts, with four wins over 525 metres at The Meadows (29.90), four wins over 515 metres at Angle Park (29.45) two wins each over 515 metres at Sandown (29.94), 520 metres at Wentworth Park (29.74), and 460 metres at Warragul (25.96), with one win over 460 metres at Geelong (25.93).

NEXT we have a litter of seven pups by international stud success, Bella Infrared* (July 2009 Kiowa Mon Manny x Bella Ionic). Registered by White Hills breeder, Garry Webb, the four dogs and three bitches are from the Barry Smith bred bitch, Mepunga Moss (December 2011 Where’s Pedro x Mepunga Diva), whose dam is by Flying Penske* x Mepunga Shiraz (Black Shiraz x Benji’s Babe). Beautifully bred, Mepunga Moss is from a litter of nine named, from which seven raced and all won, including Mepunga Aztec (7 wins(, Mepunga Ledger (13 wins) and Mepunga Ranger (19 wins). She raced 58 times, for 12 wins and 14 placings, winning five times over 515 metres at Sandown (29.43), four times over 525 metres at The Meadows (30.13), twice over 450 metres at Warrnambool (25.24) and also over 530 metres at Cannington (30.60). She has two named offspring from her first litter, whelped in November 2015, by Premier Fantasy*, both winners, and also has a litter of five dogs and five bitches on file, whelped in July 2016, by Kinloch Brae*. These first two litters feature some outstanding future potential breedling lines.

Seven bitches BALLIANG EAST breeder, David Traynor has a litter of seven pups on the list this week by well bred, veteran US sire, Clappin Thunder* (May 2001 Molotov x Solar Bear). The seven pups, all bitches, are from the beautifully bred bitch, Olive’s Gift (October 2012 Kilty Lad x Beach Witch), whose dam is by Surf Lorian x Bo Douglas (EJ’s Douglas* x Advert). Olive’s Gift os from a litter of four named, with three winners, including Kilty Boy (1 win) and Silent Mistake (5 wins). She raced 61 times, for seven wins and 16 placings, winning five times over 500 metres at Bendigo (29.28) and twice over 460 metres at Geelong (26.09). Clappin Thunder* is beautifully bred, being by Molotov (HB’s Commander x Mystic Rose) from Solar Bear (Minaki Zeke x Lotus Turbo). Solar Bear was a prolific producer of 43 named offspring, from five litters, who won more than 300 races between them.

Appreciation post Pia Francesca As 2018 rolls in, I can’t help but feel very thankful for my gorgeous boy, Charlie. He’s been such a good boy over the Christmas/New Year period and all of my family have commented on how placid and calm he is, even when surrounded by 20-30 people. He even slept inside at my dad’s house (formerly a “no animal inside” residence) and had no accidents or caused any fuss. Although he can be cheeky at times, he really brings us all so much joy every day. Happy New Year to all you other pups and fur-parents! I hope 2018 brings everyone much happiness ☺.

Taking a breather in the shade, admiring the surroundings…. Happy hound Anna Cruden

Marlene Hassett said “I agree , they really do seem to know what is expected of them . I had 14 people at my house for Christmas lunch , she was happy to just walk around and get pats from everyone . Didnt bother anyone while we ate outside and didnt do any bench surfing even though all the food was laid out on the bench and we were all outside . An absolute angel

Greyhounds in the home Happy New Year Jo Bowler Just popping in to a group that understand my pain. Living in a tourist town can be challenging, never more so than on bloody New Years Eve. Bloody fireworks (both official and even worse the backyard ones) and drunk partying neighbours. I'm waiting for midnight to come for the next round of booms and hoping that these two keep relatively calm. Happy bloody new year.... What do u mean I have space issues?

Noel McMahon Editor’s Note: For all those people whose lives would not be bearable if there were no Fireworks? I wish the authorities would start looking at “Noiseless Fireworks” at least. Those that make the decisions obviously don’t stop long enough to think about the effect the noise has on animals, particularly dogs.

Margaret was inducted into the GRV Hall of Fame, receiving the 2004 Ken Carr Medal – the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry. TGRC president Don Haley, paid tribute to Graeme. “Margaret always used to say that she couldn’t do what she did without Graeme. “He was a strong supporter of the club, very involved for many years. Graeme was larger than life, he was full of life and he will be missed by many people.” Graeme’s funeral service was held at Meeniyan Cemetery at 10.30am on Wednesday, January 3. A memorial service to celebrate Graeme’s life followed from 11.30am at Meeniyan Town Hall.

She trained a champion greyhound in the mid-1970s, and has hand-made presentation rugs for several race clubs for the past 35 years. Margaret also played a pivotal role in one of the sport’s greatest PR exercises – Dalkeith – which hit the silver screen. But Margaret’s life in greyhound racing really has its genesis in the late 1930s.

Here she tells her own story. ”I was born and bred into greyhound racing. I had a collar and lead in my hand from the time I could walk,” Margaret said. ”I was my father’s (Arch Franklin) little ‘dog keeper’. He gave me a gift of loving the sport. ”From aged four, I would ‘create’ a toothache, just to go to the White City dogs with dad. ”And when I was around 10 years old, I would go coursing hares with dad, Ron Gooding and Jim Sparks in the paddocks along Greens Road, Dandenong.“Not long after, dad was called up to the air force where he served in Papua New Guinea during World War II.” He left behind a 12-month-old pup and I used to walk her along the banks of the Dandenong Creek. I thought he would only be away a couple of weeks, but he was gone four years. “Then, in 1972, I met a man called Graeme Thomas and we moved to Meeniyan. He bought me my first two greyhounds – Nigger Chimes and Charlie Chimes.” They were bought for $100 from Nugget Charles as three-month-old pups. Cattle prices were low and the two dogs were our salvation. Nigger Chimes was my first winner. He won the 1975 Silver Chief, at only 17 months of age, and all of my family was there. But my most exhilarating moment as a trainer was when Meeniyan Prince Margaret Thomas—GRV Hall of Fame: defeated Eaglehawk Years involved in industry: 50 Star in a heat of a Category: Administrator Melbourne Cup.
