Our people Talking Breeding NSW There are still no litter reviews from NSW again this week as we have not received any details of the Whelping Report for May from GRNSW. We have had discussions with them though and have been assured they are working on the problem and hope to have it resolved very shortly. We will resume NSW Litter reviews as soon as the information starts to flow again.

Our People Women celebrated at Healesville event The Healesville Greyhound Association proudly hosted its annual ‘Women on Track’ event on Sunday 22 July, which was a day of racing that incorporated a celebration of women in greyhound racing. The club hosted a number of racing events exclusively for female greyhound trainers on the day, with all competing female trainers receiving a gift bag of wonderful goodies. “It was a great day,” said Healesville GA Manager, Cynthia O’Brien. “Women play a huge role in greyhound racing and it’s important that they are recognised. Their names might not always appear in the form guides, but in many cases it is the women behind the scenes doing a lot of the work with greyhounds that are trained by their partners or other family members.” Each year the Healesville GA presents a Women on Track Award to a person who has made a major contribution to Victorian greyhound racing.
Healesville GA Manager, Cynthia O’Brien with the 2018 Women on Track Award recipient, Kate Williams.
“This year’s recipient was Kate Williams for her 10year-plus service in GRV’s Member Services team, including assisting all trainers and registered persons in the many and varied areas of our industry,” Cynthia announced.

Local hopes pinned on David
Not since Thorgil Tex in 1994 has a local greyhound won the Shepparton Cup, and My Name’s David is the only local to make Saturday night’s $47,000 to-the-winner final. Ferguson has lived in the Shepparton region most of his life and trained greyhounds for the past 20 years, but this is the first time he has entered a greyhound for the Shepparton Cup. Bred by Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club Manager, Carl McGrath, My Name’s David will jump from box three in a race which fastest heat winner Zoom Out is the TAB favourite at $2.40. Zoom Out is undefeated at Shepparton in seven starts, and she is also the reigning Shepparton Matchmaker winner – a series she won in March from box eight. Although a tough field, Ferguson believes My Name’s David is a winning chance. “His best asset is his mid-race speed and he likes inside draws so box three suits him. He ran two lengths off Fernando Bale’s track record at Bendigo (over 425 metres), so he could surprise a few people,” Ferguson said. My Name’s David is rated an $8.00 chance with TAB. Comeback Kimetto a star in the making Aston Kimetto produced another stunning comefrom-behind performance to win last Sunday’s Group 3 St Leger (460m) at Warragul. Open to the best young greyhounds in the country, the St Leger Final produced a field of immense quality, yet despite giving all seven rivals a head start, Aston Kimetto managed to sweep past them all and claim the $25,000 first prize. A son of KC And All and Sweet It Is, Aston Kimetto is showing the traits of his dam, who was a champion stayer who won two Sandown Cups. Despite running the fastest time among the four heat winners last week, Aston Kimetto paid $8.20 for the win, with Chief’s Empire ($5.30) and the favourite, NSW sensation Pindari Express ($3.20) filling the minor placings. Bred in Grovedale by John Finn, owned by Ray Borda and trained by Seona Thompson, Aston Kimetto clocked a time of 25.71sec, only marginally slower than his heat win. “Ability-wise Aston Kimetto is right up there with Aston Dee Bee and Aston Bolero at the same age,” said owner Ray Borda. “That St Leger final was one of the hottest fields of young greyhounds I have ever seen, so to win from box five after coming from last says a lot about his potential.” Aston Kimetto has now had six starts for five wins and one minor placing. Aston Kimetto winning the St Leger.

Copley’s Corner Waterloo Cup: There’ll be something for everyone at coursing’s holy grail
Nationals: Ken Hinkley’s $75,000 greyhound chase
Andrew Copley
Victoria’s 2018 coursing season will draw to a close this weekend at Lang Lang with the running of the 145th Waterloo Cup on Saturday and Sunday. With over $25,000 in prize money to be won across the weekend, nominations are expected to be high for Australia’s oldest greyhound race. “Having 145 years of history makes the event very special and with names like Byamee and Silver Chief on the trophy, who wouldn’t want their dog’s name inscribed on the same piece of silverware? It takes a very special dog to go undefeated through six courses over two days,” said National Coursing Association President, Peter Craig. The Waterloo Cup also boasts consolation races, the Waterloo Plate, Waterloo Purse and GOTBA Challenge for greyhounds knocked out in the first, second and third rounds respectively. There’ll also be a host of supporting events on the Sunday only for maidens, puppy and veteran greyhounds. Craig said the Waterloo Cup is a great opportunity for people to experience the unique atmosphere that coursing provides, even if you don’t have a greyhound competing. “Coursing always has a picnic atmosphere and a great time is had by all. It’s also a great opportunity for trainers who have never coursed before to come along and learn,” Craig said. “If greyhound enthusiasts are at Lang Lang either on Saturday or Sunday afternoon watching the greyhounds later in the day as they take on their 2nd and 3rd courses for the day, it will give them a new respect for the bravery of our dogs. They can also have a chat with trainers about their race day procedures and feeding regimes to pick up a few tips.”
Port Adelaide Coach Ken Hinkley will be excused for having more than footy on his mind when the Power take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval on Friday 24 August. A greyhound Hinkley is closely connected to, Cairnlea Kenny, will be racing for a first prize of $75,000 that night, in the Croc Media National Sprint Championship (515m) at Sandown Park. Every state in Australia will have at least one representative in the race, with Cairnlea Kenny the sole South Australian finalist. Hinkley has been racing greyhounds for many years with his best mate, the late Peter Hubbard, a greyhound trainer from Victoria’s Western District who passed away suddenly 18 months ago. Hubbard bred Cairnlea Kenny, while his wife Jan owns him. Hinkley was at Adelaide’s Angle Park last Thursday (9 August) to cheer on Cairnlea Kenny when he won the South Australian Sprint Final, thus securing his place in the National Sprint Championship. “Jan owns Cairnlea Kenny but Ken is involved with him. In fact, the dog is actually named after Ken. Greyhound racing is a real outlet for Ken…he just loves it,” Cairnlea Kenny’s trainer, Petar Jovanovic said. While Jovanovic has won three National Sprint Championships, this is the biggest greyhound race Hinkley has been involved in, and Cairnlea Kenny is a $10 chance with TAB after drawing the coveted box one. “He is drawn well, he’s very professional, and when he comes out of the boxes he just accelerates. I think he’s a genuine chance of winning,” Jovanovic said. While Hinkley’s coaching commitments will keep him away from Sandown Park on Friday week, the entire Port Adelaide supporter base will be watching with interest as Cairnlea Kenny represents the state of South Australia. And should Port Adelaide and Cairnlea Kenny both win, they’ll be celebrating long into the night.
