Talking Breeding - New South Wales Talking Breeding New South Wales
There are still no litter reviews from NSW again this week as we have not received any details of the Whelping Report for May from GRNSW. We have had discussions with them though and have been assured they are working on the problem and hope to have it resolved very shortly. We will resume NSW Litter reviews as soon as the information starts to flow again.
Wentworth Park meetings transferred 15/08/18 GRNSW advises that due to ongoing remedial works at Wentworth Park which includes the upgrade of the track cambers in line with recommendations from the UTS, installation of a safety rail, sandblasting of the running rail and other associated works, the next four race meetings are being transferred. This will allow the works to be completed and also the opportunity for participants to trial their greyhounds at the venue prior to resumption of racing. The new venues are as follow: Wednesday 22nd August 2018 – Wentworth Park to Bulli – Bulli now Metro entry race meeting with B Grading & Richmond lifted from a C meeting to a B meeting (will be graded as a B) Saturday 25th August 2018 – Wentworth Park to Richmond A1 meeting, graded as a B Meeting Tuesday 28th August 2018 – Gosford to Richmond – transfer of a B Meeting Wednesday 29th August 2018 – Wentworth Park to Maitland – A2 meeting to Maitland – grade as a B Saturday 1st September – Wentworth Park to Bulli – Bulli upgrade to A1 meeting and in the WP night slot, (graded as a B meeting) the Saturday Bulli twilight to Richmond and a B Meeting. Nominations times will remain the same. Further programming information will be ‘live’ in the next 24 hours. Graders will work with Clubs to update. GRNSW, in consultation with the NSW GBOTA, have elected to allow a trial period prior to the return of racing. As a consequence of the work, we advise that the Group Races, the Bob Payne Stake and the Chairman’s Cup will not be held in September and will be rescheduled in due course. While the repositioning of the 520m starting boxes is under consideration in line with recommendations, at this stage, the start will remain in its current position.

Peter Galo’s breakthrough at Group level enhanced his imposing record to 17 from 28, while he’s won four of his last five, with the defeat coming in the Bendigo Cup. Earlier on Cup night, there were thrilling finishes to the two support feature events. Sharp Diamond ($6.30), trained by Wayne Vassallo, prevailed in a blanket five-way finish to the Byers Electrical Cup Night Stayers over 650m, defeating fancied pair Billy’s Bake ($2.20) and Ebby Ripper ($4.30) in 37.68sec, with only .73 separating the first five across the line. Peter Galo was bred to celebrate country cup glory, with his sire, the underutilised Peter Rocket, winning the Horsham Cup in 2013, while his mother Flossy is a litter sister to Garry Selkrig’s former iron dog Stagger, which won an incredible 64 of his 137 starts, highlighted by the 2012 Warragul Cup. Selkrig also won the Warragul Cup in 2016 with Peter Galo’s half-brother To The Galo’s, a son of El Galo and Flossy. It was a case of third time lucky for Peter Galo at Group level, after finishing unplaced in last month’s Bendigo Cup and the 2017 Healesville Cup. “I am very excited. Actually, I am over the moon with him tonight,” Selkrig said. “It was a great field but after three tries at a country cup he has got there. “I brought him here tonight thinking he would win. He drew out wide, which is where he needs to be. He is an absolute champion! “I knew from early on how good he would be because he has ability plus. But not only ability, he is a beautiful kennel dog and just does everything right.” Peter Galo qualified for the $47,000 to-the-winner Shepparton Cup with a 25.20sec heat victory from box six, with Michelle Mallia-Magri’s track specialist Zoom Out setting the qualifying standard with a 25.12sec effort, her seventh win from as many visits to Shepparton. Copley’s Corner Hinkley greyhound in state-wide battle against nation’s best By Andrew Copley While Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley focuses on his team getting across the line against Essendon at Adelaide Oval on Friday night he will also be hoping for another win of a much different kind. A greyhound Hinkley is closely connected to, Cairnlea Kenny, will be racing for a first prize of $75,000 at Melbourne’s Sandown Park the Crocmedia National Sprint Championship (515m) during the half time break of Friday night’s match. Every state in Australia will have at least one representative in what is greyhound racing’s only annual state-versus-state sprint race, and Cairnlea Kenny is the sole South Australian contender. Hinkley has been racing greyhounds for many years, chiefly with his best mate, the late Peter Hubbard, a greyhound trainer from Victoria’s Western District who passed away after a sudden heart attack 18 months ago at age 56.

Coursing For the second year running the final was WATERLOO CUP: Bear Left claims coursing’s biggest honour streamed live on GRV’s Facebook Page. GRV Website
Greg Carter, President of Waterloo Cup sponsor the Cranbourne GRC, presents the winning trophy to trainer Ray Henness.
Bear Left has claimed the 145th running of the Waterloo Cup at Lang Lang for trainer Ray Henness. To win the Waterloo Cup, Bear Left had to course one-on-one six times over the weekend without defeat, in what is the ultimate test of speed and stamina. Bear Left, a son of El Grand Senor and Angel’s Chorus, defeated Julana who is trained, owned and bred by the Massina family to win the $13,000 Waterloo Cup. It was the battle of the Bendigo region in the final, Henness being from Heathcote and Massina from Golden Square. Bear Left is no stranger to the coursing circuit having won the Loot Lodge Rod Millington Maiden Dog at Benalla in April and the Bert Clark Memorial Bear Left with trainer Ray Henness and daughter Ivy. at Longwood in July. And he is also well accomplished on TAB tracks, being a winner of six races from 15 starts. Bear Left was bred is NSW by Benjamin Sweetman and is owned by Con Dimopoulos. Henness has had a weekend to remember with his Ready 2 Race purchase Extra Gear finishing third in the 2018 Group 2 Shepparton Cup on Saturday night. “I can’t believe it to be honest,” Henness said. “It has been a massive weekend. I couldn’t have done it without (fellow trainer) Murray Collyer, who looked after Bear Left overnight while I was at the Shepparton Cup.” “I tried coursing for the first time 15 years ago and Bear Left (white) defeats a persistent Julana in the Waterloo the dog turned around and came back to me. I said Cup final. I’d never course again. But I’ve had a go at it this year with Bear Left and have won the Waterloo Cup. It’s very hard to believe.” This was the 145th running of the Waterloo Cup, which concludes Victoria’s 2018 coursing season. - 23 -
NCAV Waterloo Cup Review BEAR ‘LEFT’ WITH US – THE WEATHER WAS FINE TOO! Sue Delaney & Heather Villenger Celebrating the 145th year of coursing in Victoria at Lang Lang Coursing Club last weekend we saw live streaming of the Waterloo Cup final for the second time. We also saw photo finishes for the first time with some very close finishes having the judge rely on the photo. It must be said that coursing has seen a stellar year, and these initiatives just rounded off our year in a positive manner. The whole venue looked magnificent and the volunteers need to be commended on their achievements, it is no easy task fronting up two days in a row to conduct these types of meetings. Sometimes Sunday night can’t come quick enough! If you were there celebrating the two-day meeting, you will know that the weather was fine. For those who were not there and cannot believe that in the 2 days during the meeting we had two showers on the Sunday. Yes, the weather overnight Friday and Saturday was nothing short of feral with copious amounts of rain, hail, thunder and lightning, it was nothing short of a miracle that we had two days that were perfect for coursing. Anyone who has taken the time to head off coursing will know, always take your wet and chilly weather gear with you and most did so. A good warm jacket and a beanie were the order of the day. The final of the NCAV and Cranbourne GRC sponsored Waterloo Cup we saw Ray Henness’ BEAR LEFT Owned by Con Dimopoulos BL D (S: El Grand Senor D: Angel’s Chorus) defeat Dallas Massina’s BD B JULANA Owned by Chelsea Madigan (S: Dyna Double One D: Chelabella). Julana got away from slips in perfect manner although she lost her red collar in the process. Bear Left had to work hard and dig deep to catch the elusive young bitch puppy. Coming from behind he caught her just past the driving tower and powered home to take the holy grail of coursing for 2018. Bear Left had won both of his events earlier in the season at both Benalla and Longwood. He had put his paw up and told the coursing fraternity – I can do this coursing thingy! As for Julana she has continued on from her Victoria Oaks form where she was defeated in the semi-final. Watch out for her next season she’s but a babe still. That was a truly magnificent display from a puppy.
Photo - Vicki Clark winner’s trophy and Tyabb owner/trainer Les Week’s MICKEY RAWSON BE D (S: Barcia Bale D: Dorothy Rawson) as runner-up. Jess Fothergill’s 5-hour turnaround road trip from Heathcote to Lang Lang proved worthwhile and a handy weekend but then she’s a dab hand at the coursing caper. After all, Jess trained Suave Odessa to take out the runner up trophy in the 2013 Waterloo Cup conducted at Longwood where we celebrated our 140th Season.
For the greyhounds run out in the third round we also conduct the We coursing folk have kept with tradition and we know someone GOTBA Challenge with only three dogs left to compete in the is going to be defeated in both the first round and the second round Semi Final…. Greyhound racing’s annual Nationals series comprises two Group 1 events – the NSC and the NDC. This is Australia’s only truly national greyhound racing event, as all six states (NSW, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, SA and WA) are represented in both finals. Greyhounds earn the right to represent their home state by competing in their state’s heats and finals, held in early August. The Nationals are held at a different state on rotation each year. The home state automatically receives two finalists in each event (as well as the two reserves). The one remaining place in the final eight is filled by a Wildcard entrant, which is decided by a Greyhound Clubs Australia (GCA) ranking system made public throughout the year. The Nationals is the only racing event run by the GCA each year. When mum puts all your toys on your bed to vacuum and there's no room left for me! Claire Goy
Hello I was just told about this group today. We adopted our beautiful 2 1/2 year old greyhound around 4 months ago and she is such a special part of our family. A series of unexpected events has brought me to seeking help to look after our greyhound for a period of 7-14 days. I haven't had her in a kennel yet and wasn't equipped to afford it either. I was wondering if anyone knows of a service that could help me out taking care of her whilst I'm in hospital? I'm in carrum downs Victoria. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate them. Thanks in advance. Tracey Lancaster - 28 -
Greyhounds in the home FOSTER A GREYHOUND: There are many greyhounds who need a little more assistance to help them settle into pet life They fall into two categories Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track and need help to pass their GAP assessment OR Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their GAP assessment These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the only difference is that need a little more help to transition into pet life The reality is that without foster carers some of these dogs are at risk If you would like to change the life of beautiful dog contact Rebecca and join her team ____________________________________________
