Christopher Somerville Christopher Somerville is the Walks Correspondent at The Times. His book The January Man is shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize 2017 for outdoors, nature and UK-based travel writing. It follows a circle of walks around Britain, through the course of a year, recording the nature, people, weather, landscape, music and local traditions. It is also a very personal account of a post-war father-son relationship, exploring the character of his father John and the long walks they shared over many years which brought them closer together. “It is a wise, entertaining, kind book – one that makes you want to walk, and want to read. The language is taut, beautiful, sparky and generous. It’s a book not just for walkers or nature lovers, but anyone who loves a good plain story.” Rachel Joyce, author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Price: £21

Penny Stokes & The Story of Greenham Common Penny Stokes talks about the book she has recently published to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Greenham Trust, The Common Good: The Story of Greenham Common. To many people the words ‘Greenham Common’ conjure up an image of peace women in conflict with the police, but behind this lies a much longer and more varied history. A new book by Penny Stokes describes the many dramas which have taken place on the common: from Redcoat musters to refugee housing, golf to glider warfare, furze-gathering to filming, and bare-knuckle prize-fighting to bomb storage. Thanks to Greenham Trust which, as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations is publishing this book, the common has been restored as Berkshire’s largest heathland and returned to public ownership. Price: £21
