When I’m asked ‘what’s your favourite play?’ I hesitate for a moment before replying. But just for a moment. I have seen and read many wonderful plays, funny, intriguing, moving, but one that stays with me, and I will never tire of watching, is Journey’s End by R C Sherriff. So I am delighted to have been given permission to stage this great play at The Watermill, especially as we commemorate the centenary of World War I. If you’re familiar with Journey’s End, take the opportunity to come and see it again as its impact never fades. If not, let me share this extraordinary play with you for the first time and then let me know what you think.

Jodie was the winner of I’d Do Anything on BBC TV, giving her the opportunity to play Nancy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End revival of Oliver! Calamity Jane can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood. Hard, boastful and desperate to impress, she travels to Chicago on the Deadwood Stage to recruit a star, Adelaid Adams. But things don’t go too smoothly for Calamity, as everyone in town favours the new girl and she struggles to keep her jealousy and pride in check. It takes her long standing enemy Wild Bill Hickok to make her see sense, and realise her Secret Love… With an Oscar nominated score that includes The Black Hills Of Dakota, The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), Just Blew In From The Windy City and the award-winning song Secret Love, this actor-musician production will follow in the tradition of The Watermill Theatre’s previous acclaimed musicals. Journey’s End By R C Sheriff ‘You don’t know him as I do; I love that fellow. I’d go to hell with him.’ Just before Germany’s spring offensive in 1918, British officers are in a dug-out on the front line. Keen young officer Raleigh joins the company and finds Stanhope, his old friend, much changed. Trying to create some sort of normality amidst the horror, are Trotter, who is furious about how the war has interfered with his meal times, Hibbert, who is trying to find a way to escape, and Osborne, who would rather be tending to his garden. Journey’s End is an unflinching portrayal of men facing the unbearable but finding the camaraderie to keep on fighting. R C Sherriff wrote this powerful, moving play based on his own experience in the trenches and The Watermill revives it in this First World War centenary year.

Andrew Aguecheek loves Olivia, which is less awkward and more wretched, and Malvolio is about to find out he loves her, which, as her butler, is not the done thing. Watermill Book Club We are delighted to welcome back scientist, writer and broadcaster Rita Carter whose last Book Club event, Ten Ways to Keep Your Brain Young, was a huge success. Kate became the BBC’s chief news correspondent in 1989, and has reported from war zones around the world. She has won numerous awards including three Royal Television Society awards, the BAFTA Richard Dimbleby Award, and the Broadcasting Press Guild’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting. Kate also presents From Our Own Correspondent on BBC Radio 4 and is the author of four bestselling books. She was awarded an OBE in 1993. Join Kate and hear about her extraordinary career and life experiences. Kate will also talk about her new book, Fighting on the Home Front, a story of the First World War years through the eyes of women. Meet Kate afterwards in the bar for tea and cake. Before the show A tempting selection of salads, smoked fish and cold cuts, plus hot dishes using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Available at lunch time on matinée days from 12.30pm and in the evenings Monday to Saturday from 5.30pm.
In the bar Enjoy a drink before the show with our sharing platters, including Cheese Lovers’ platter and Antipasti Assorti. We also serve chips and dips and olives with home-baked Thyme bread. Available in the bar and Lily Pond up to 30 minutes before curtain up and after the show.
After the show Cream teas are available after matinée performances and should be booked and paid for in advance with the box office. On Friday and Saturday evenings you can dine after the show. Choose from one, two or three courses from our menu. Please make your selection from the menu before the show. Whether it’s for a small birthday party, a get-together with friends, or an anniversary, our celebratory packages are available before the show or in the interval for parties of ten or more. You may have a glass of Prosecco and canapés, and, for a little more, chef’s homemade celebratory cake.
Our fundraising lunches are special social events and include a unique talk about the activities behind the scenes at The Watermill, shedding light on the creative process, the team and the running of the theatre. You will receive a glass of wine on arrival to enjoy during the talk. This is followed by a light lunch, coffee and a matinée performance. These exclusive events are held in the Lily Pond from 12.30pm.

Supporting Your Theatre Just 14 months left of match funding! The Watermill Theatre recently received a Catalyst grant from the Arts Council which promises to match fund any new or increased donation made to the theatre. We are delighted to announce that so far we have raised £75,000 of our £110,000 target. We can only claim match funding for another 14 months so we would love to hear from you if you feel able to help in any way. Your Visit Accessible Theatre Please tell us about any special requirements you, or anyone in your party, may have when you book your seats. The Watermill Theatre premises are 90% accessible to wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties. There is a spiral staircase to our circle seats on the first floor and no lift, so if you need to be seated in the stalls, please let our box office staff know when you book. There are reserved disabled parking spaces near the theatre entrance which should be requested when you book your tickets. We can accommodate two people in wheelchairs per performance, subject to availability. We also have our own wheelchair available on request. There is a reduction of £2 off each ticket for both a person with disabilities and their companion on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings only.

How To Pay Tickets can be paid for by credit or debit card, or they can be reserved for up to three days while you send a cheque or gift vouchers. Please collect your tickets from the box office 30 minutes prior to the performance. We can post your tickets to you for a charge of £1.30 (postage and handling) or you can collect your tickets from the box office. Cheques should be made payable to The Watermill Theatre Ltd. Please check your tickets carefully upon receipt to ensure you have the right number and right performance date.
Concessions Concessions are available for Senior Citizens, Job Seekers, people with disabilities and their companions, Equity members, students in full-time education and under 18s: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. All concessions and discounts are subject to availability. Only one concession applies. Proof of identity required. Concessions are not offered retrospectively.
Exchanging tickets All tickets are non-refundable. However, we are happy to exchange tickets for another performance of the same production, subject to availability, up to 48 hours before the performance. We charge £2.50 per ticket plus £1.30 p&p.
Reselling tickets We will try to resell your tickets (after all other tickets have been sold) and will credit your Watermill account which will be valid for one year. We charge £2.50 per transaction plus £1.30 p&p. For ticket exchanges and re-sales, please return your original tickets to the box office.
Gift vouchers Watermill vouchers can be purchased from the box office and used to buy tickets, meals, drinks or merchandise. Data protection: When processing your booking, our box office staff will ask for your name, address, telephone number and email address. This information may be used to keep you informed of forthcoming events, fundraising activities and special offers. If you do not wish your details to be used in any of these ways, please inform the box office when booking.

How To Find Us From the M4 and the north From the M4, junction 13 (or A34 from Oxford), follow signs for Winchester and Southampton (A34). Ignoring the first turning signposted Newbury, turn off at the next junction signposted Newbury, Hungerford (Donnington, Speen) and take the first exit at the roundabout. Turn left at The Hare and Hounds public house (brown sign post for The Watermill Theatre), turn left at the end of road and next right into the village of Bagnor and left at the sign for The Watermill.
From the A34 and the south From the A34 (Winchester and Southampton), follow signs for Oxford (A34). Ignoring the first two junctions signposted Newbury, turn off at the third junction signposted Newbury, Hungerford (Donnington, Speen) and take the first exit at the roundabout, then straight over the second roundabout. Follow the instructions from the Hare and Hounds public house above.
Car Parking Please be aware that car parking space is limited. Please car-share whenever possible and help reduce the impact on the environment too.
Bicycle Rack A rack is available for bikes to park alongside the restaurant.
By bus Newbury Buses, service 4, out and return runs every two hours, Monday to Saturday from Newbury bus station to Station Road, Speen, approximately 20 minutes walk to The Watermill. The last bus to central Newbury leaves Station Road at 19.30.
By train An hour from London Paddington to Newbury station. Taxi rank at Newbury station.
