Welcome to The Watermill We’ve also got a whip-cracking summer of music with Calamity Jane starring Jodie Prenger, christened ‘the nation’s sweetheart’ after winning the search for Nancy in BBC TV’s I’d Do Anything. Book now as tickets are flying out of the theatre faster than the Deadwood Stage is a-rollin’ on over the plains! And for something new, try But First This - A musical homage to Radio 4, a show that Watermill audiences will be the first to enjoy.

When I’m asked ‘what’s your favourite play?’ I hesitate for a moment before replying. But just for a moment. I have seen and read many wonderful plays, funny, intriguing, moving, but one that stays with me, and I will never tire of watching, is Journey’s End by R C Sherriff. So I am delighted to have been given permission to stage this great play at The Watermill, especially as we commemorate the centenary of World War I. If you’re familiar with Journey’s End, take the opportunity to come and see it again as its impact never fades. If not, let me share this extraordinary play with you for the first time and then let me know what you think.

As ever there are productions and events to suit a variety of tastes and pockets during the coming months. We often add events that don’t make it in to the brochure, so it’s always worth checking our website and keeping an eye out for information around the theatre and follow us on social media. We look forward to welcoming you to The Watermill soon. Best wishes

Calamity Jane With Jodie Prenger as Calamity Jane

Jodie was the winner of I’d Do Anything on BBC TV, giving her the opportunity to play Nancy in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End revival of Oliver! Calamity Jane can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood. Hard, boastful and desperate to impress, she travels to Chicago on the Deadwood Stage to recruit a star, Adelaid Adams. But things don’t go too smoothly for Calamity, as everyone in town favours the new girl and she struggles to keep her jealousy and pride in check. It takes her long standing enemy Wild Bill Hickok to make her see sense, and realise her Secret Love… With an Oscar nominated score that includes The Black Hills Of Dakota, The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), Just Blew In From The Windy City and the award-winning song Secret Love, this actor-musician production will follow in the tradition of The Watermill Theatre’s previous acclaimed musicals. We’ll be giving you a Wild West Watermill style welcome this summer… see you in the saloon!

Thursday 11 September to Saturday 11 October Directed by Paul Hart Designed by Andrew D Edwards

Journey’s End By R C Sheriff ‘You don’t know him as I do; I love that fellow. I’d go to hell with him.’ Just before Germany’s spring offensive in 1918, British officers are in a dug-out on the front line. Keen young officer Raleigh joins the company and finds Stanhope, his old friend, much changed. Trying to create some sort of normality amidst the horror, are Trotter, who is furious about how the war has interfered with his meal times, Hibbert, who is trying to find a way to escape, and Osborne, who would rather be tending to his garden. Journey’s End is an unflinching portrayal of men facing the unbearable but finding the camaraderie to keep on fighting. R C Sherriff wrote this powerful, moving play based on his own experience in the trenches and The Watermill revives it in this First World War centenary year.

The Watermill Young Company presents

Twelfth Night

Tickets Tickets £11 and concessions £6.50

By William Shakespeare Viola loves the Count Orsino, which is awkward because he’s her boss and he thinks that she’s a guy called Cesario. Orsino loves the Lady Olivia, which is awkward because she has sworn off men, but has fallen for his messenger boy, Cesario. This is awkward because, as aforesaid, Cesario is actually a woman in disguise. Andrew Aguecheek loves Olivia, which is less awkward and more wretched, and Malvolio is about to find out he loves her, which, as her butler, is not the done thing. The Young Company is delighted to present Shakespeare’s most famous comedy celebrating love and life in all its excesses and absurdity. Anarchy and music abound in this, the most complicated of love triangles. ‘...a highly entertaining evening of fun.’ Newbury Weekly News - Young Company, You Can’t Take It With You, 2013

Zap! Supercharging The Electric Brain As the promise of pharmaceutical cures for conditions such as depression and chronic pain evaporates, a new generation of electrical brain stimulants is being hailed as the magic bullet. And they come with a bonus: the same technology can enhance our skills and sharpen our perceptions. Rita Carter will tell you what these magic devices are, how they work, and demonstrate an electrical stimulation technique which can be used by anyone at home.

Friday 10 October at 1.30pm

Can You Think Yourself Well? We tend to take it for granted that a healthy mind makes for a healthy body. Scientifically, though, most of the evidence is about the effect of negative thinking: stress hormones, produced by anger and misery, eat away at our organs. But does this mean that positive thinking can do the opposite? Rita Carter examines the complicated mechanisms that link positive emotions to physical health.

Friday 7 November at 1.30pm

Being Good Is Good, But Is It Good For You? The latest research indicates that being good can reduce your risk of dying in any one year by 20%. But it’s not the acts themselves that matter but some complicated social interaction that goes with them. Rita Carter looks at the desire and benefits of being good and at the minority of people who do not share the desire to be good. Do they have a choice about how they behave? Supporting Your Theatre Just 14 months left of match funding! The Watermill Theatre recently received a Catalyst grant from the Arts Council which promises to match fund any new or increased donation made to the theatre. We are delighted to announce that so far we have raised £75,000 of our £110,000 target. We can only claim match funding for another 14 months so we would love to hear from you if you feel able to help in any way. Donations made now will unlock Arts Council money at a level of £1.50 raised, £1 matched. We are very grateful to many individuals who have supported our Catalyst Campaign and in particular, thanks are due to our benefactors. Platinum Benefactors • • • • • •
