George Stiles and Anthony Drewe also return to talk about their time at the theatre having gone on to become two of the most successful writers of musical theatre. Living Spit will present their uproarious version of the Nativity and we continue our popular Sunday music sessions with 50’s rock’n’roll group The Bluejays. Welcome to Part Two of our season celebrating fifty years of great theatre here at The Watermill. I am delighted to introduce a range of work which celebrates some of the theatre’s notable achievements as well as looking to the future.

Don’t miss your last chance to catch Twelfth Night and Romeo + Juliet as they return to The Watermill for one final week in July as part of their international tour. Our hit productions of Crazy For You and The Wipers Times will also tour the UK this autumn.

Our summer musical will reaffirm our collaboration with Stephen Sondheim as we present the first ever actor-musician version of his sumptuous masterpiece A Little Night Music. This is followed by a new take on Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray adapted by Phoebe Eclair-Powell. We then present a major fiftieth anniversary revival of Joe Orton’s black comedy Loot.

We look forward to welcoming you to the theatre as we continue to celebrate this very special anniversary year. Paul Hart Artistic and Executive Director

THE PICTURE OF

Dorian Gray

Thursday 28 September to Saturday 21 October

By Oscar Wilde Adapted by Phoebe Eclair-Powell Directed by Owen Horsley When offered the chance of ageless beauty, Dorian jumps at the chance to lead a daring and unscrupulous double life in order to remain youthful. If given the same opportunity would we yield to the same temptation? In a world where beauty and appearance is at the forefront of everyday life, Dorian Gray paints a vivid picture of vanity, cruelty and corrupted innocence. Following the success of last year’s Frankenstein which transferred to Wilton’s Music Hall, comes another stripped back retelling of a classic story. An all-female cast bring Wilde’s gothic masterpiece to theatrical life in this fast-paced 75 minute production directed by Owen Horsley, whose credits include Salomé for the RSC and Associate Director of Cheek by Jowl. The Picture of Dorian Gray will be touring to schools 25 September to 14 October. For information call 01635 570927. The Sackler Trust Principal Supporter of The Watermill Schools Touring Programme. “We all know that something is eternal. And it ain’t houses and it ain’t names, and it ain’t earth, and it ain’t even the stars ... everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings. All the greatest people ever lived have been telling us that for five thousand years and yet you’d be surprised how people are always losing hold of it. There’s something way down deep that’s eternal about every human being.” Thornton Wilder, Our Town’ The Young Company present Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer prize winning play Our Town, a story about celebrating the glories of everyday existence.

Nativity ‘Away in a manger, no crib for a bed…’ Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. A donkey, a camel and a new born lamb. A tiny baby, swaddled in clothes lying in a makeshift bed in a dilapidated farmyard outbuilding. But enough about what Stu’s bought Howard for Christmas.

With the usual mix of silly songs, pitiful puppetry and more Biblical befuddlement than you can shake a figgy pudding at, two men take on all the roles to present a version of the Nativity as you’ve never seen it before!

Following their hit show Six Wives of Henry VIII in 2013 and their triumphant take on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Howard Coggins and Stu Mcloughlin return to tackle another great Christmas story. Yes, that’s right folks, Living Spit are doing the NATIVITY!

Supporting Us - On and Off Stage Actors receive appreciation through applause but few realise just how much our actors are supported on stage. There’s a huge team behind the scenes making sure that what you see on stage is of the highest possible standard. We rely on our experienced creatives - directors and designers - to bring ideas to life and make each performance captivating for you. Our dedicated production, wardrobe and stage management teams ensure that sets are constructed with absolute precision, attention to detail is second to none, props are authentic looking or originally sourced and costumes are meticulously made. Our success not only lies in our artistic programme. We run a very busy outreach department. In a typical day, they can be directing a youth theatre production, showing a work experience student the ropes, delivering drama workshops offsite to schools, facilitating a weekly drama group for older people, running theatre activities for under 5’s and welcoming a group with learning and physical disabilities to take part in a bespoke session. Last year this department of just three, engaged with over 20,000 people locally! Phew!

In our 50th anniversary year, we have ambitious plans to create more spectacular and challenging shows and we want to expand our range of participatory activities to reach more groups in our community - but we need your help. A donation from you will help enormously.
