Summer/Winter

THE 2016 SEASON CONTINUES

Welcome to The Watermill

priority Friends’ opens booking 9 May. Monday booking General onday opens M 16 May. I’m delighted to announce the second half of my first season here at The Watermill. It’s a heady mix of music, new writing and storytelling for all the family. We kick things off with the classic musical Crazy For You, featuring Gershwin’s great score and all the glamour of Broadway packed onto our tiny stage. We then premiere The Wipers Times - a new play by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman based on their film of the same name. This looks at the incredible making of this satirical newspaper for the troops amidst the horror of the First World War. Our Christmas show is a version of Sleeping Beauty by Rufus Norris. Magical and mischievous in equal measure, it will be directed by Bill Buckhurst whose Sweeney Todd In A Pie Shop received rave reviews in London’s West End. He will bring the same immersive experience to The Watermill’s intimate space.

Alongside these we have other great shows and events which include a new adaptation of Frankenstein, which will tour to schools and play at The Watermill for a week, taking an innovative approach to the role of the monster in Mary Shelley’s great novel. The Watermill Young Company bring comic satire, Ubu Roi to the stage in what is sure to be an unforgettable production. I am also thrilled to be welcoming the return of Really Big Pants Theatre Company with their new show Suddenly! for children. The Swing Commanders and, recent star of BBC 1’s The Voice, Tom Milner, supported by Lauryn Redding, who appeared in our production of Romeo + Juliet, will play in our new Sunday music sessions. Paul Hart Artistic and Executive Director The Watermill is a registered charity no. 261430 and receives core funding from:

By Ian Hislop and Nick Newman Based on a true story A Trademark production and co-commission with The Watermill Theatre Directed by Caroline Leslie

“The war is not funny, Sir.” Colonel Howfield “I’ve a feeling that may be the point.” General Mitford The Wipers Times is a stage adaptation of the award-winning BBC film by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman. It tells the extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme, interspersed with comic sketches and spoofs from the vivid imagination of those on the front line.

The production takes place one hundred years after the Battle of the Somme and publication of The Wipers Times. Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s comedy, A Bunch of Amateurs, played to packed houses at The Watermill in 2014. Interpreted Performances

In a bombed out building during the First World War in the French town of Ypres (mispronounced Wipers by British soldiers), two officers discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. Far from being a sombre journal about life in the trenches they produced a resolutely cheerful, subversive and very funny newspaper designed to lift the spirits of the men on the frontline. Defying enemy bombardment, gas attacks and the disapproval of many of the top Brass, The Wipers Times rolled off the press for two years and was an extraordinary tribute to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Sat 15 October at 2.30pm. Optional signed pre-show talk at 1.30pm.

Saturday 22 October at 1pm.

Saturday 22 October at 2.30pm.

Monday 31 October to Friday 4 November

Wednesday 9 November to Saturday 12 November

The Watermill Young Company presents

By Mary Shelley Adapted by Tristan Bernays

By Alfred Jarry

Directed by Eleanor Rhode

Directed by Seamus Allen

“If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear!” Frankenstein, a young scientist, brings a gruesome body to life. Cast out into a hostile world, Frankenstein’s creature searches for his true identity. But the pain of rejection and a broken promise changes everything. Vengeful, dangerous and in blood-thirsty pursuit of his maker, the creature threatens to destroy Frankenstein and the lives of everyone he loves. In an electrifying 75 minute adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic, gothic tale, two actors explore the timeless relationship between parent and child.

Papa Ubu wants power. Mama Ubu wants it for him. He’ll risk everything to wrestle the crown from the King in a glorious coup. It’s a pity the Ubus are so stupid, greedy and most likely insane. But when has that ever stood in the way of ambition? The Young Company present Ubu Roi, a riotous comedy of high ambition and the lowest of humour. Think of Macbeth, re-imagined by Monty Python.

‘…a challenging, atmospheric production, impressively realised by a talented cast of young people.’

Workshops are available and a free education pack can be downloaded prior to the show opening at www.watermill.org.uk/education_packs

theatres from Bradford to Broadway, from village halls to international arena tours. In Jeremy’s fascinating new book he explores the history of actor-musicianship, examining its origins, as well as investigating how this specialist form of music theatre is created.

Jeremy Harrison was one of the country’s leading actor-musicians and a core member of John Doyle’s award-winning ensemble of actor-musicians from 1995 - 2001. He appeared regularly at The Watermill in shows including Cabaret, A Star Danced, and a re-working of Bizet’s Carmen that toured the UK and Europe. Since graduating from RADA in 1987, he has worked in theatre, film and television as a performer, musical director, composer and director both in the UK and internationally. As leader of the renowned actor-musician course at Rose Bruford he has trained many of the country’s leading actors in this field.

The Watermill has played a significant part in the development of this art form. Artistic Director, Paul Hart will look back with Jeremy at those early productions, examining why audiences love this style of theatre and what might happen next, both here at The Watermill and beyond. Jeremy’s book was recently commended in The Stage as a ‘best new book.’ Tickets Tickets £6 and £5.50.

Support Your Theatre! Our shows are all ‘Made in Bagnor’ and last year over 78,000 people saw a Watermill show in the region. As a producing theatre, we assemble a new cast and creative team for each of our shows. Our creative teams live on site throughout the rehearsal and performance period, becoming part of The Watermill family for approximately nine weeks at a time. To complement our work on stage, we also run a packed outreach programme involving some 13,000 participants from our local community. In addition to this, and as part of our touring programme, we take some shows out to schools and other venues around the county. It costs nearly £3 million to produce our shows, run the theatre and education programme annually. A significant percentage of our income is earned through ticket and restaurant sales and we receive a grant from the Arts Council, England. For the remainder, we rely on the generosity of our loyal audience, sponsors and trusts who help us in many ways. This support is hugely valuable to us. If you would like to help us you can: • Become a Friend of The Watermill
