LEONARDO DICAPRIO & MARTIN SCORSESE LD: Yeah, right. I just slap that on during lunch. TW: This is your fourth movie together. Do you feel you balance each other out in a way? Martin Scorsese: No, it’s just something we’ve been working together for four pictures in a row. I think by the second picture, The Aviator, particularly in a scene where he was sort of stuck in the screening room for 12 days and nights, we were shooting and he’s stuck in the screening room alone talking to himself and I felt that we were finding things. I just thought it would be a collaboration that’s worth pursuing because we work and pretty much agree on pretty much what we want to do. I also know that if I ask for something I seem to get it and get more. TW: So is this one the best? MS: I think so, I think so, yeah, but he’s very brave so I kept pushing and saying, “Why don’t we go here?” And he’ll go off some place else and I’m saying, “Why don’t you come back over here? Could you come back and try again this way?” There were a couple of times too where [Leo] would tell me, “I don’t know where I am or what I’m doing” and I said, “That’s okay lets try again.” What that was I guess, I didn’t know this but I think it’s an issue of wiping the slate clean and just getting all the thinking out of the way and just dealing with his raw, primal emotions. I think that’s what happened and its amazing how it comes together. It’s exciting.

ovies don’t get much better than the cinematic collaborations between Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro. The director and star made such landmark films as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Cape Fear together. Another duo comes close though. With actor Leonardo DiCaprio, Scorsese has made such films as Gangs of New York, The Aviator and The Departed. Now DiCaprio stars in Scorsese’s Shutter Island, a scary thriller about a U.S. Marshal investigating a mental institution in the 1950s. The two joined forces again to talk about their latest film.
M
decision to gravitate towards those types of roles ever. You can’t help what you’re emotionally moved by. We read this screenplay and immediately this cathartic journey of this man trying to find out the truth of what goes on at Shutter Island and thus finds out the truth about himself and his own trauma and his own past and the secrets about who he is moved me emotionally immediately. TW: Was it painful to go there for the film? LD: It was light and breezy. [Laughs] No, it was hard but you know, that’s simultaneously something that’s a lot of fun too. How do I describe it? This type of complexity in a character and in a storyline when you’re dealing with doing a scene that works on multiple layers simultaneously, it presents a challenge to you as an actor and it becomes an interesting, fascinating process. You learn a tremendous amount every single day that you’re there and that to me is a lot of fun. So it’s a different type of fun. It was one of the more challenging and difficult roles I’ve ever had to play, that’s for sure. We really needed to concentrate every day on how far to push this and ultimately it became the decision as to what degree we wanted to push all the different characters in what scene. TW: Did it give you any nightmares while you were shooting the film?
The Wave: Leonardo, you’ve played several characters who have these intense personal issues. Have you ever felt like you’ve lost it to the extent that you’ve sought help?
LD: It’s funny, I don’t really remember my dreams, I don’t. I don’t have a memory of them. I haven’t had them for years really. Only when I took a nicotine patch when I was trying to quit smoking did I have blood curdling nightmares of murder, mass murders and I woke up in the middle of the night and had to take them off. But, I don’t really remember my dreams that much. I don’t know what that means about me from a psychological point of view but that’s the truth.
Leonardo DiCaprio: Or that I needed to make an alternate reality for myself? Not necessarily. It’s never a conscious
TW: So the nicotine patch, is that your trick when you have to act intensely?
6
THEWAVEMAG.COM FEBRUARY 17 MARCH 2, 2010
LD: For me, it’s very simple. He is Martin Scorsese. He is the consummate director of my time, I believe, and that relationship was forged with another actor, in his work with De Niro. Very early on in his career his work with Bob and that relationship that they have together not only made some of the most memorable, powerful films in cinema history but it forged something and I believe that the actor that he hires, whoever that might be, he gives full responsibility to them to create the character. Through that performance and through what the actor’s trying to search for, he’s also simultaneously creating the narrative . He looks toward the actor that he works with to create the tone of the film that he’s making and that’s a partnership. So in that dynamic, if there’s a difference of opinion, I’m allowed to, or any other actor’s allowed to play those things out and go through that cathartic experience. There’s no wrong choice to make. He’ll be there subtly steering the ship at the end of the day but he allows you to sit in your character’s shoes and make those choices and that is empowering as an actor. TW: Is there something about Italian/American actors that just click with you? MS: They’re half Italian, they’re half Italian. LD: And Daniel Day Lewiso! MS: I tell you, it’s Italian or Jewish. They’re New Yorkers. It’s a New York thing basically. I don’t know. It just happens that Leo is half Italian, I’m half Italian and American. Mark Ruffalo and of course De Niro over the years so no, there’s no doubt. It’s just a part of actually maybe the stories too that lend themselves to that type of performance or actor. TW: When you’re Martin Scorsese, can you even tell what your best films are? There’s so many. MS: No, that’s a very difficult question you know. The thing is I don’t really know because even a film like this, when you’re finished the work we went through the process. Don’t forget, besides the shooting, the work on the editing too. So the editing was nine months, ten months through the year and so I lived with it a long time. I’m one of those people who it affects me and so ultimately when I finish a picture it’s over and I try not to see it again. It just is while you’re working. I don’t really think of them as finished. I sort of just leave them be. If I leave them be, they’ll leave me be for a while but they don’t. So all of them come back. I think about all of them all the time. TW

SCREAMING DOWN THE SLOPES nyone enroute back from a ski or snowboarding weekend in Tahoe would be well advised to drive back San Jose way via the picturesque San Joaquin Valley. And no, not just for the scenic vistas of snow-capped mountains, rolling green pastures dotted with fat, happy cows and hills lined with grapevines (although those views are lovely, too). A must-stop spot along Highway 88 is Munnerlyn’s Ice Creamery in Pine Grove (about two hours from Tahoe). Owner and ice-cream magician Stewart Munnerlyn makes his own ice-cream fresh onsite about three days of the week, using seasonal ingredients for winning flavors such as dark chocolate chip cherry and the kiddie favorite Jungle Monkey (the latter is a dreamy combo of banana and chocolate). The ice cream parlor is closed on Tuesdays, and opens at noon on weekends.

Baume’s Chef Bruno Chemel
MOLECULAR GASTRONOMY HITS THE PENINSULA new arrival on the dining scene in Palo Alto is chef Bruno Chemel’s recently-opened restaurant Baumé. Named after French chemist Antoine Baumé, the restaurant showcases Chemel’s signature molecular gastronomy. The contemporary French food reflects Californian and Asian influences and is prepared with seasonal, often locally sourced organic ingredients. Menu offerings include beets coloriage with warm goat cheese and aged balsamic; and slowly poached striped bass with daikon, yuzu miso and dashi broth. Chef Chemel was most recently the executive chef at Chez TJ, the renowned Michelin starred restaurant in Mountain View.

PRIVATELY DINING he ambience at Parcel 104, the epicurean destination at Santa Clara’s stylish Marriott hotel, is not unlike that of a sleek, modern cruise ship: gleaming wood floors; low, glowing ceilings; and little lounge areas where people pool together for socializing. Like a cruise ship, Parcel 104 features a Captain’s Table, of sorts. It’s called the Chef ’s Table, a dining area tucked into its own semi-private space where up to 12 patrons can enjoy the restaurant’s renowned farmfresh regional fare – such as Pacific Ivory salmon in porcini cream, wild boar sausage, and organic lettuce drenched in eucalyptus honey.

rooms, each with its own look. One of the most popular choices, says Alexander’s special events manager, is The Boardroom, an upstairs space that offers a view of the restaurant’s open kitchen, a plasma television, and its own restroom. The Boardroom “is our most unique room,” he says. “It’s really just a fun place to be. It puts people at ease and they can relax; they feel like they’re at home.”

The key elements in a private dining room’s appeal are the “dedicated service and the acknowledgement from the management and staff that you are a special guest,” says Parcel 104’s private dining coordinator. Fuki Sushi, in Palo Alto, for example, bows to the Japanese tradition of private dining with tatami rooms, private dining rooms separated by sliding rice screens and decorated with Ikebana and scrolls. Each room has a call button to summon servers. And at The Grill on The Alley in The Fairmont Hotel, private dining room customers can choose from different prix-fixe menus, including the four-course executive menu or the six-course wine dinner. How much does all this personal attention cost? Private dining rooms range from $45 to $3,000. A small price to pay for your very own restaurant. TW

FRANKLY GREAT SHOPPING t’s kind of annoying when friends walk through your new pad and can identify the origin of every piece of furniture or decor. “Aah, I see you have the IKEA Norden dining table and the Ektorp sofa. And is that the Crate & Barrel desk in the corner there? We have it in cherry.” Add some truly unique touches to your interior landscape with eclectic wares from Los Gatos store Frank Interiors. From coffee tables made using funeral home coffin trolleys (or “church trucks” as they are dubbed) to vintage signs and retro neon lights, there’s nothing here that screams “chain furniture store” or “catalogue.” The store is also brimming with smaller scale items such as French hand-milled soaps, skull-shaped candles, quirky books and so much more. Frankly, it’s fabulous. And is sure to have your smart-aleck pals stumped as to where you found that amazing lamp. TW
