EW TOWNS experience the ebb and flow of the seasons like West Chester. After a long, slow, hot summer, September breathes new life into the town. The start of a new semester brings with it 12,000 students, whose numbers nearly double our town’s population. As the heat fades, locals return to West Chester from resorts, summer homes and other places beyond our borough. There are festivals, new shops, restaurant openings, and, best of all, The WC gets printed twice a month. That’s right – double the dose of your favorite new publication. With everything else picking up in town, it only seemed right that we, too, should do a little something extra. Additionally, you can turn to us on the web. Our new website at thewcpress.com gets updated daily with new deals, activities and information, all for or about West Chester. And, if you follow us on Facebook and Twitter, you have a chance to win prizes, like gift certificates to your favorite bars and restaurants. Look to the left of this page for more information about that. Finally, now that The WC has found its footing, I wanted to take time to thank the people who helped us get off the ground. Four months ago this publication was a slim, 40-page rag, and now (while we like to keep that “rag” feel) the magazine you hold has nearly doubled in size. Friday 9/30 and Saturday 10/1: Ghost Tour Of West Chester This walking tour features tales of ghosts, folklore and history. Your guide will lead you on a 90-minute walk through the spooky lanes of neighborhoods where you'll explore the land of the shadow people, learn of the lost souls of the Underground Railroad, and hear about the West Chester gallows where horse thieves and murderers were hanged. E ALL have one great treasure that we constantly seek. If you regularly visit garage sales, auctions or dumpsters, you probably peer into the far corners of whatever place you are scouring in search of the thing that will make your pulse quicken. Sure, you content yourself with other finds while you continue your quest, but like true love, your heart reacts to what it's after. Is it a Honus Wagner? The Beatles on vinyl? The Franciscanware creamer to replace the one you broke in your mother’s set, leaving the sugar bowl useless and lonely? Although I carry a dog-eared, black-and-white composition book with my customers’ needs, my own personal list is right between my ears.

The first pizza parlor in West Chester... Taste a slice of history

My beach house is both very old and very crooked. I love it for all the happy memories, and I have come to regard it as lovely. My father deadpans in reply, “Even a mother alligator thinks her child is beautiful,” but that’s beside the point. The heart of the house is the low-ceilinged, slope-floored dining room,
where family and friends gather around the long farm table. The mismatched chairs were either trash-picked or permanently borrowed from my sisters, and I dreamed of the perfect chairs. I had my heart set on Emeco chairs, those gorgeous, sturdy, lightweight, brushedaluminum icons commonly called ‘Navy chairs.' My wallet, however, had other ideas; Navy chairs cost about $440 each, new. Although they made their mark in the middle of last century, Emeco chairs are still manufactured in Pennsylvania, where the website proudly informs you they are “made by 116 hands." Emeco chairs, including model 1006 (the Navy chair) are constructed from 80% recycled aluminum. The chair, designed

for use at sea, was found to be so durable that it quickly found a home in schools, hospitals, prisons, and all kinds of places where a tough chair would be required. The chair is so beautiful it also attracted attention from the Mount Olympus of design – both Frank Gehry and Phillippe Stark work with Emeco. Hotbeds like the Hudson Hotel in New York, employ Emeco chairs in their profiles. Since my crooked dining room doesn’t merit the attention of Phillipe Stark, I was left to dream. Then, one day last spring at the Uniques & Antiques Modern Design sale in Aston, voila! a set of Emeco brushed-aluminum beauties. This sale of modern furniture brings dealers from New York , California and points in between, so I knew I would have competition. As the bidding began, the price rose but stayed in my range – very cheap for the chairs. I like to think it was my demeanor and steely gaze that dropped that last Brooklyn dealer out of the bidding, but truthfully, it may have been my squealing between bids that got rid of him, much the way you back away from a person muttering on the street.

VERYONE knows Ryan's Pub. For many of us who live in downtown West Chester, it's like a second living room. This month we got to know one of Ryan's longest serving bartenders. Lesley Young-Klein stood up on her tippy toes so she could see over the bar to have her picture taken, then chatted with us about what it's like working in a family-owned pub. Name: Lesley Young-Klein Age: 33 Hometown: West Chester Born and raised? Yup How long have you been bartending? Let me see... about 15 years? How flattered are you to be bartender of the month? I’ll be even more flattered if you don’t tell people my age. Sorry, no can do. Well, then I’ll at least say that it is exciting. Any publicity for Ryan’s is good publicity. How upset is your fellow bartender JB that
owner Pat Ryan picked you as Bartender of the Month? Ummm. I’d say he is pretty perturbed. He is like one of those six-year-old beauty queens from Toddlers & Tiaras. What separates Ryan’s from other bars in town? We have a great staff, fast service and easonable prices. We’ve had the same regulars since day one, which helps with the fact that whenever anyone walks in, they feel at home. And what separates you from other bartenders? The fact that I’m not just here to pay my car insurance. I have a mortgage, a family, real issues, so I make sure that whenever anyone comes in here, they’re happy. I treat them –no matter their age – like they’re one of my kids. I guess I bring a real adult attitude to it. What’s the most common drink at Ryan’s? Bombs. Thursday nights we have $5 bombs – vodka, Jäger, car bombs, all of it. But they’re also popular on other nights. Bud Light drafts are popular because they’re always $2.75. What’s a drink people often order that you hate? Absolut Lemon Drop Martini. It’s just
one liquor, so you’d think it was easy. But in the end, you’ve got sugar packets and lemon rinds all over the bar. It’s just not standard. If you’re not at Ryan’s, what are you doing? I’m taking care of my eight-year-old daughter Jackson, or cleaning up around the house. Do you have any hobbies? I’d like to say my hobbies are going to the gym and doing outdoor sports, but the truth is my only real hobby is sleeping any chance I get. When you’re not at Ryan’s, where would you go for a drink? Jitters, Kooma, Sidebar anywhere that I know has good, experienced bartenders. Okay, anything coming up at Ryan’s you want to mention? The 10 People You Meet In Paradise

Jared Savitski, owner of Paradise Transit, tells us about some of his usual suspects
ARADISE Transit is quickly becoming West Chester's favorite mode of transport. Because they can offer you a ride around downtown, or fill in as designated driver, there's usually a variety of people onboard the Paradise bus. Among them you're certain to find at least a few of the following stereotypes. Jared Savitski, owner of Paradise Transit, describes some of his usual suspects. Betty Bachelorette: She'll be wearing a tiara or a sash or something equally embarrassing. Her gaggle of friends will be squealing about a checklist. Want to be the last guy a girl kisses before she marries? Sit next to Betty – her friends might ask you to help them check off #11. Philly Frank: Depending on the season, he'll either be decked out in red or chanting E-A-G-L-E-S! (or maybe both). He'll have had a few and be happily en route to Pattison Avenue to have a few more at the Paradise tailgate, making predictions about points and spreads. If you're wearing Cowboys/Giants/ Steelers/anything-other-than-Philly gear, try to avoid direct eye contact. Stevie Sandals: He's been ridiculed for years, but that doesn't change the fact that Stephen's year-round attire consists of nothing but shorts and sandals. Winter's chill won't break his steely desire to brave the elements in the most minimal of footwear, but he'll be sitting in the warmth at the back squeezing his toes to ward off frostbite. Sally Stilettos: You know what they say: pain is beauty. It's not in her nature to ride a bus, but it's even less likely she's going to stumble home in six-inch heels – after all, they're Manolo Blahniks! You'll find her at the front of the bus pecking at her bedazzled iPhone, taking breaks from texting to rub her feet. Happy Hour Harry: After a few too many dirty martinis, Harry's decided he'd rather face his wife's wrath for leaving the Benz in town than face a breathalyzer. He'll be sitting out of Sally's line of sight, but she'll be directly in his. Out-of-Town Olivia: She's likely wearing office attire, since this was supposed to just be a business trip, but you can only watch so many reruns of Seinfeld from your hotel bed before the inner socialite bursts through and demands an evening out. She'll be awkwardly adjusting her jacket on her way back to the Holiday Inn. Singing Sam: No matter the song, he/she knows all the words... or at least he/she thinks
During his time at West Chester University, Jared saw the need for transportation downtown Adam Jones he/she does. Who needs a karaoke mic when you have a captive audience on the Paradise bus? Don't shush Sam; you'll only encourage him/her. After the chorus of "Don’t Stop Believing" he/she won’t have a voice left anyway. Timmy 21: Early in the night, Timmy will be joining in on the festivities with his older friends (and those with excellent fake IDs), but after last call on his 21st birthday, Timmy will probably be staring at the floor, holding his breath and desperately trying to contain the prairie fire, three wise men and José Cuervo shots he's been force-fed. Sleepy Sandy: Philly Frank, Singing Sam
and all of Timmy's friends could be howling up a storm, but it doesn't matter – Sally is passed out with her head tucked in the corner. Maybe she's had a long day at work, maybe she's had one too many at the bar, but you'll never know, because that girl is out cold. Felipe Freshman: He's possibly an exchange student, and definitely just starting his first year. If that wasn't enough to confuse the poor guy, he has stumbled onto a bus full of crazy people. The music's playing, people are dancing, somebody's passed out in the corner, and he has no idea where it's headed, but none of that matters – Felipe is loving it.

Diane Stopyra’s enlightened take on dating from a woman’s perspective
HIS year, my friend’s 14-year marriage came to an end. You probably think that something explosive must have gone down – she cheated with his brother, he decided he was gay, someone died. After all, it would take something that big or that irreversible to end a relationship that far along. But what ended this, and so many other long-term relationships just like it, was not explosive at all. No one realized the other’s infidelity. No one discovered the other’s weird foot fetish or secret shrine to a cross-dressing ex. No one died. It took something far more subtle than this. It was a slow fizzling out. It was, according to my friend, a lack of magic. “Magic” is a word I hear over and over. Everyone, it seems, is looking for some kind of relationship abracadabra. And people are so convinced it exists, they’re willing to call off a magic-less marriage even a decade in. Companionship isn’t enough. Compatibility isn’t enough. Even love just isn’t enough. Ask any single girl, not matter how desperate, and she will tell you: it's just not worth it without the magic.
When it comes to this subject, I’m torn. (Shocking, I know.) Part of me thinks that yes, of course, there should be something magical about finding your one and only. Settle for anything less and you are just that – settling. Call it spark. Call it chemistry. Call it whatever you want; just don’t commit without it, or you’re doomed for divorce. Another part of me thinks that relationship magic is merely some fairytale notion concocted by Hollywood to keep us all
unhappy with our own romantic lives and, therefore, anxious to live in someone else’s fantasy world for the duration of a romantic comedy. Magic is just another euphemism for passion, another way to say that your significant other makes you feel, well, horny. And while that’s a beautiful thing, it’s bound to fade after a few kids or a few mortgage payments. What you’re left with a couple of years in, if you’re very lucky, is a partner who will share the remote control. The companionship, the compatibility, and the love – that is as much magic as you’re going to get. Then again, a third part of me doesn’t care either way whether the “magic” my friends are referring to is real or not. Because it doesn’t matter; it’s real to them. I watched a magician pull a bunny out of a hat when I was a kid. It wasn’t real, of course; it was nothing but a trick. But that didn’t matter because, at the time, it was real to me. Maybe the important thing to remember about magic is that it doesn’t come from a wand, and it doesn’t come from another person. The only one with the power to create your own relationship magic is you.

A Trainer’s Tips On Staying Fit

Christine Mooney shares her insight on staying happy and healthy
’M THE laid-back Southern girl, the semi-nomad who doesn’t own anything unless it fits in her Jeep (or in her parents’ attic until she’s secured a place to live). The girl who, when the wind blows from a certain direction, feels something wild fire up inside her. Always free and relaxed, never stressed. But things have changed lately. I don’t live in my native North Carolina or in laidback San Diego or Savannah anymore. I don’t change jobs every six months when the mood strikes or a new place beckons. I’ve always had “wings,” but over the past year I’ve created something new for myself that I never thought I’d have an interest in — roots. As much as I love my newfound stability, it comes with its own set of troubles, and it made me realize a secret I had kept from myself. Despite all my self-assurances, I actually do get stressed out. Turns out I’m human after all. Go figure. Before, if I didn’t like the way something was going, I’d simply quit. You can’t feel stress if you don’t give it a chance. So when the going got tough, I left. But, this is the
grown-up version of me, and I need to figure out a way to manage the stresses of bills and both full and part-time jobs, and other obligations so that when I find myself with some free time, I actually feel free. So how to do that? For years growing up, my mom practiced yoga, using The Raquel Welch Total Beauty and Fitness Program. Looking back at my childhood now, and knowing all of the physical and mental benefits that yoga affords, I understand why Mom coped as well as she did with the madness my brother and I created around the
house. Later, as I studied for my personal training certification and even now as I continue my fitness education, I realize that, of the seven components of fitness, balance and flexibility are the most ignored. And balance and flexibility are exactly what I need, both physically and emotionally. From weightlifting, sitting (at a desk, in my car, in front of a television), and stretching only sporadically, my joints feel stiff and inflexible. With all the stress that has blossomed in my life this summer, I have been feeling incredibly unbalanced, as well. In my search for these two underrated components of fitness, I came across quite a few yoga studios in West Chester, like Symmetry Pilates and Yoga, Spirit of Yoga, Peace Love Art Yoga, and others. All of them offer packages, or you can simply pay as you go with a variety of classes from gentle to power yoga. I’ll visit some of them soon, and once my practice is through, I’ll have found relaxation in the place where, much like the sturdy power of the tree pose, I’ve happily planted roots.

It’s Not Always Dumb To Be Thick-Headed Graham Nolte and Tommy Stackhouse travel the country in search of fame
Tommy Stackhouse and Graham Nolte are both West Chester natives who hit the road this summer to film the ultimate road trip Adam Jones
W
HEN they were teenagers growing up in West Chester, Graham Nolte and Tommy Stackhouse would surf through town atop a minivan, light their friends on fire and see who could be shot with a paintball gun the most times before calling it quits. They’d seen Bam Margera and West Chester’s own CKY Crew rocket to stardom for crashing shopping carts into bushes. “Basically, we wanted to do that stuff ourselves, so we got out there and started filming it,” said Graham. During their sophomore year at Henderson High School, the two friends started work on Graham’s graduation project, a film titled ThickHeaded. The school district added the graduation project to their requirements for graduation in 2001 to “permit students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by integrating academic and practical components.” As Graham says, “I was already filming all this stuff, so when I was told I needed to have a graduation project I
said, ‘Screw it, I might as well put this together.’” Senior year the crew held a premier for the film and sold the DVDs for $10. The first week they sold 150 copies. Thick-Headed was a hit. “It was crazy,” says Tommy. “People I’d never seen before recognized me. It even happened to me once when I was up at Penn State. This girl, who must have been in eighth grade when we made the movie, stopped me and said, ‘I know you. You’re the guy from Thick-Headed.” Five years later they’re still acting like fools and saving it on film. After putting in four years of college, which Tommy refers to as a “solid f****** investment,” they decided to reunite and hit the road to make another Thick-Headed. After studying film at San Diego State University, Graham would ensure that this latest project was finely crafted, and, this time around, they’d also incorporate Tommy’s high school graduation project. Despite failing to qualify for the Henderson Boys’ Speaking Contest (or possibly because of it) Tommy decided to make his
graduation project a public speaking event. He put together a comedy night at school during the spring of 2007, and he and several friends got on stage and did stand-up comedy. Since then he’d done comedy on-again and off-again throughout his time studying marketing at the University of Delaware, and had grown accustomed to making a fool of himself before a live audience. On paper, the plan was simple: 45 Days. 18 Cities. 4 Guys. 1 Van. The Ultimate Comedy Road Trip. They grabbed Taylor Butz and Steven Briggs, two friends willing to try doing standup on the road, found a couple cameramen who were free for the summer, and set off in Graham’s parents ’97 Chrysler Town & Country on a roadtrip that would lead them zig-zagging across the US from California to New York. As the website explains, the plan was to be “hitting up any place that will give them a chance while working towards their dream of making it big in

Their jokes are untested, their ability to control the crowd is minimal, and their set lists are sketched out on napkins before the show. Often, the funniest part of the performances are the unplanned bits, the recoveries. During their show at Ryan’s Pub on the last Tuesday of August, some jokes left the crowd silent and confused (Steven’s convoluted combination of sex and Guitar Hero), while others produced full-on fits of laughter (Graham’s true story of being tricked into ingesting acid half an hour before heading onstage). To be fair, Steven’s overly complicated jokes might have gone over better if it weren’t for certain memebers of the crowd. During his set he battled a drunken Russian bride and her friends for control of the audience. He commented on having seen the bride on the internet earlier, and even entertained her friend’s slurred requests before handing the mic to the most insolent girl in the group and walking off stage. Taylor was up next on stage and won back the audience’s attention with self-

Thick-Headed ? From Page 46 deprecating humor and marijuana references (“Who’s this slightly over-weight, completely stoned Draco Malfoy?”) after the wedding party were escorted from the bar. Even so the hammered girl in the white dress and her maids were easily the most memorable part of the evening, as frustrating as it was for both the comics and the audience. However, when you go back over the clips of the tour the Thick-Headed Crew have been uploading throughout the trip, it’s a different story. The short videos hold your attention completely, with clips of Taylor bombing while dodging full beer bottles thrown by a Spanish-speaking audience in Mexico, and footage
of the guys off stage, like Tommy, covered head to toe in peanut butter, roaming through a crowded, Los Angeles mall in search of his jelly-clad soul mate. You’ll laugh out loud more times during the three-minute recap of their trip to Tijuana than you will during their hour-long stand-up show. Talking with them near the end of the tour, it was clear that the trip has become about a lot more than testing their skills as standups. After finishing their tour on September 1, the guys will begin the arduous process of going through hours of uncut footage with the goal of packaging the final edit with a few sponsorships and landing a television pilot. Because, as it turns out, what they really care about is making movies. In Graham’s words, “I don’t give a shit about comedy.”

Talking West Chester real estate with realtor Ryan Estrada
FTER the real estate bubble burst back in 2008, uncertainty has been the only constant in the market. Whether you’re looking to buy or sell, it is a tumultuous time for real estate. Foreclosures have been all over the news, and short sale has become a trending topic. But, if you’re not involved in finance or real estate, you might be a little bit confused about what’s been happening and what to expect from the future – we sure are. So, we thought it would be a good idea to catch up with Ryan Estrada, a realtor with Weichert Realtors right here in town, to chat about the real estate market as a whole, and what we can expect in West Chester. What is a short sale? A short sale means that, if a person were to sell their house, they would not make enough money from selling it to pay the liens on the house. We’re seeing this a lot now, because up until 2008, people borrowing to the hilt, taking equity out on their homes and refinancing, and then the real estate bubble burst. Now their home is actually worth less than what they owe on it. We would describe this as being underwater. In a short sale you need to get all the creditors’ approval for the sale because they’re the ones losing money. Ultimately it is a real pain – you need approval from so many parties that they tend to take a long time. You could make an offer on a home but then find another place before your bid on the short sale gets accepted. Is there a benefit to the buyer? There is a benefit. You’re able to get the property at a lower price than what it might have been worth, but it doesn’t usually equate to being a big deal because the bank has to approve the sale price – they’re the ones who are losing out. Still, if you’re not in a hurry, you have somewhere to stay for now, and you have six months to work a deal, then it might be worth it. So then, the real deals would be in looking for a foreclosed upon property ? Sure. It is a case-by-case scenario because it depends on the property and the neighborhood. You might get a good deal in a neighborhood with a lot of foreclosures, but a strong neighborhood, one without a lot of foreclosures, might not have a significant price drop on a foreclosed home. Has the market hit bottom yet? It’s hard to say exactly, but a good gauge to figure out

In a balanced market, a house tends to be up for sale about five to six months. Anything less than five months would be a seller’s market, because it is obviously a desirable place to live and people are snapping up house. Anything more than six months would be a buyer’s market because the market could get flooded with homes and the prices will come down. Generally, the whole country is still a buyer’s market. Would you describe West Chester as a buyer’s market? In West Chester, just like everywhere across the counrty, we had the same run-up in appreciation until things crashed in 2008. Fortunately, homes under $300,000 are moving quickly thanks to first-time home buyers who aren’t looking to unload their current property before they look to buy. If you bought property in the 2000s, you might be almost underwater, so you’re probably holding on. Are there areas in West Chester where we could expect to see growth in the next few years? There are some areas seeing new construction, but housing starts are lower. However, if you get farther west, out into Downingtown, there is good construction and lower prices. We’re seeing a correction
in the market. We’re not seeing great growth, but it is becoming more stable. Is it a good idea to be looking to buy in West Chester, or should I focus elsewhere? West Chester is not going to depreciate – it is a good place to live, and it is not going anywhere. It’s the county seat, a center for business and government and has great schools. If you’re looking at things long term, because it is a long-term investment, West Chester is strong. Can a person who has not saved up a lot of money still get a mortgage? There’s ways to do that. For example, instead of trying to bring the price down on a sale, you can ask the seller to help with the closing costs. As long as you’re actually employed, and you’re not trying to scam the market, then you can get a mortgage. Realistically, how much does someone need saved up? The most popular way to go about financing is to go FHA, which allows you to put only 3.5% down instead of the usually 20%. For a first-time home buyer who is realistic with their expectations, if they have around $15,000 we can get something done. As long as your debt to income ratios match up, then you should be able to get a home. Are there any incentives still available to first-time buyers? Despite the fact that the First-time Homebuyer Tax Credit has dried up (which is a shame), there are still tons of incentives. Double check with your accountant, because I’m not a lawyer or accountant, but there are tax incentives. There are a lot of young professionals in this town holding off on buying a home. What would you say to convince them to make a move now? People are often turned off because they hear that mortgage regulations are really strict right now, but the truth is that mortgage regulations are just back to normal. Interest rates are now at an alltime low. They’ve never been lower, so you’ll probably never have a chance to buy a house for a better deal. The West Chester Food Safari

HERE are two food combinations I will eat until the day I die: nachos and cheese and peanut butter and jelly. These foods are so simple, I can’t get enough. Especially nachos. Spicy, gooey, cheesy, and crunchy gets me every time. Fortunately, West Chester has a slew of places where I can get my fix. My quest for the best nachos in West Chester started right in the middle of town at Iron Hill, where the nachos come in varying quantities, but always with the same components: fresh tomato, black beans, jalapeños, green onions, melted Monterey and Cheddar, all topped with sour cream. I got the small plate and a Hopzilla to wash it down. The plan was to hit everywhere in one night, but Rams Head’s nachos didn’t leave room for that. These, the densest, cheesiest nachos in town, are loaded with fresh jalapeños, chicken or pork, plus scoops of fresh guacamole and sour cream. I couldn’t finish them by myself, so I invited a friend to dive

in as I ordered a Yards Pale Ale, the perfect complement to nacho nirvana. Fighting a buzz and incipient food coma, I made it back to my bed. After all, I had a date with High Street Caffé the next day. Coffee in hand, I headed to High Street and ordered an extra-spicy Bloody Mary. Nachos and bloodys are hangover cures. It’s a fact – look it up. The nachos at the caffé include sautéed filet and Andouille sausage with peppers and onions, seasoned with High Street’s special blend of spices, topped with sour cream and blended with chips, Cheddar and salsa. High Street’s are the most decadent nachos ever. I left the caffé and wandered, con-
templating my next move. I knew that Landmark’s nachos are big and tasty, and Kildare’s makes their own chips (from potatoes – it is an Irish bar), but my journey was cut short after a reminder from a friend that too much cheese isn’t great on the digestive tract. I halted my nacho binge for the day. The next morning I began the final leg of the nacho tour: breakfast. I headed to the place where the waitresses know the only beverages I need with breakfast are coffee and water: Market Street Grill. From Eggs Benedict to breakfast burritos that only Spicoli could dream up, this diner has it all. Market Street Grill prepares authentic Mexican nachos called Camacho’s Nachos. Nested in grilled corn tortillas was an abundance of spicy, seasoned chicken, sausage, tomato, black beans and corn, topped with eggs and Cheddar, and drizzled with cilantro sour cream. After eating only eating nachos for three days, I couldn’t be happier. Still, maybe I’ll hold off on the cheese for a while... at least until dinner.
