Why cubes and pixels? We are the pixel people. Graphic Design work with vectors and print, whilst Product Design work with ergonomic and tactile materials. Motion graphics work with pixels. We make a load of cubes look like they’re moving. We’re not just geeks and squares, but we do have technical skills, we’re multi-faceted with our talents. Think of us like a building block, you can slot us in where you need us. In an awkward corner of the 6th floor of Ravensbourne, with it’s penrose tesselation and it’s circular windows, we stick out because we’re different. We’re cubic. We compliment the cityscape in view just out the window with our cuboid layout and structure, but we are NOT BANKERS. We think outside the box. We start within the box, but then we break out. We respect grid systems and layouts but we’re definitely not restrained. Don’t worry — we’re not pretentious, after all, design is fun.

CUSTOMISABLE LAYOUT
Everyone can decide how they want to layout their space and design a layout. The display format is the width of the table (1.2m) and 3m tall. Bear in mind the tables are about 70cm high, so you need to leave space at the bottom of your layout. If we got everyone’s layout by 18th April we could come back and begin to curate the exhibition and build our bespoke structure.
OPTIMIZE EXTRUSION We can use the cuboid structure in many ways: shelves, platforms, pinboards, drawing boards, artwork mounts, storyboards, poster displays.
OPTIMIZE CONTENT You are in charge of your work. Display your stuff however you want. Hang posters, put portfolios on the table, incorporate screens to show you showreel or click through your website. You can even put inspirational objects and ideas of the shelves in raw format. E.g. Fariq could put figurines on the shelves, next to his drawings.

Detail: the blocks Here’s a nice mock up Juliana’s made to get you thinking...
Detail: the HD screen This is a touch point where anyone in the class can view their showreel on the HD screen. At 52” it’s the biggest and best display to see your showreel on. We will have a HD DVD player connected with everyone’s showreels burnt on. When left unattended it will cycle through all the reels endlessly, but anyone can take a delegate over to it and show their reel on the big screen at any time. NB: This is still to be confirmed. On the Friday, the Broadcast students may ask for their live channel to be shown.
Detail: big projection We’ve had a few ideas for this, all of which I think would be great. This acts as a sort of a bar-side icebreaker, so I think a bit of slick humour is a great way to go. There was the spoof title sequence idea in the style of The Apprentice, plus the idea of showing our logos one-by-one before spinning above everyone’s head in a class line-up shot for the finale. Graphics and Product Design may want to play something on this screen too.
Detail: hanging display We have to use hanging corrugated plastic somewhere in our exhibition, to tie in with the rest of the degree show. But what we put on the displays (and where we put them) is still up-for-grabs. We could use it to show some introductory text about our course? Or an explanation of how we approach projects? A manifesto and statement about what makes us unique? Or maybe display a project we all worked on? Swing Set? Homeless World Cup?
Detail: windows It is likely that with a lot of on-screen work, we will want to block out some of the windows, if not all of them. An animation student (Abs) is designing some slick ways to block out the window, including a pretty cool camera iris design. He also has some simpler designs that will be cheaper and can be mass-produced. For example, we can put plain white canvas into the windows it should work well, with a ‘Hula Hoop’ rig we can slot into the windows.
You are in charge. Put simply — just design your perfect IKEA shelving, we’ll build it. Then bring in your beautiful work and ideas and stick it all over it. Together we will be two giant pixelated cityscapes of motion design, but as individuals we will still shine and take control of our own work. With two blocks we get a ‘figure of eight’ layout, which makes the exhibition journey a winding experience and uses the space well.

FAQ 1. I don’t really care about all this pixel stuff, I just want a table to put my work on and somewhere to hang my print work...? That’s exactly what this is. Plus you can optimize the layout. 2. This all sounds cool, but can we actually build this? Yep. We certainly hope so. A bit of elbow grease needed perhaps. 3. Is this fair? Equal spaces to the centimetre. It’s basically Communism. 4. How much money do we need? The more the better. But if everyone gave £50 we can get started. Any money left over can be spent on a party!
