IN THE STILLNESS OF A SOLSTICE A Letter About Celebration and Gratitude

S

olstices are at their heart some of the most powerful moments of the year—a time to honour both the light and the darkness. As the axis of the Earth pauses and shifts in the opposite direction, we are reminded of the opportunity to do the same. Nature models for us a natural pendulum process that we can choose to mirror in our own lives—whenever we feel that our external reality doesn’t match our inner world. The word ‘solstice’ means “the Sun stands still”. Solstices invite us to find stillness, reconnect with our inner stories and feel into what transformations are calling us for our own illumination—for the expansion of our consciousness into the realm of possibility. Whether you are in the Northern

or the Southern hemisphere, you are a part of an extensive lineage of ancestors who have observed this time of the year in celebration. This solstice, we draw from the stillness of the Sun to share an important aspect of our mission: pushing back against the culture of urgency which has permeated the fabric of our modern mythologies and greatly impacted the way we communicate—in both written and oral forms. From that perspective, The Weave aims at curating and designing content with the intention of honouring deep listening through a holistic engagement of our senses. This is one of the reasons why we often favour the long form and offer you a robust magazine (or a ‘magbook’) that is meant to be slowly, seasonally savoured.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Our second issue is an invitation to follow in the footsteps of our ancestors and celebrate in gratitude. In TW 002, we celebrate the Gathering of Tribes, a novel, deeply-felt event in the emerging village-building movement. This co-creative, temporary village of cultures came together from September 14-18, in Alentejo, Portugal, with the ambition to regenerate “People, Planet, Prosperity and Purpose”. We are grateful to the Gathering of Tribes for being the first regenerative event we have covered as a magazine. A special thank-you to Robert Schram for his invaluable contribution to that process. We also want to celebrate our bountiful harvest from TW 001: nearly one million impressions and over 2,600 reads in 116 countries since our launch on September 22nd. We thank you for that! The celebration continues as we inaugurate our Cosmos ecosystem and welcome Nicolás Alcalá as its MythOS & Solarpunk climates steward. Cosmos is a space inspired by the realm of the ‘noosphere’—a term used to describe how human reason, thought, culture and knowledge have an

6

influence on the biosphere, as well as on planetary evolution. As a theoretical space emerging through human consciousness, in this ecosystem we will explore the culture that surfaces, in both abstract and physical forms, from the interconnectedness between the individual, community and planet ecosystems. In the MythOS (or Myth Operating System) climate, we will dive into how we can rewrite our degenerative, domesticating mythologies by creating new stories for a regenerative future. Nico’s special guest this time, Brendan Graham Dempsey, invites us on an exploration of mythmaking through reflecting on the myths we are currently living by— and how we can create a new world of stories. He also shares with us a fragment of his metamodern book Building the Cathedral: Answering the Meaning Crisis through Personal Myth.

DEC ‘22 - MAR ‘23

Our Solarpunk climate pays homage to the literary and artistic movement that imagines a world where technology is used for the good of the planet. This genre of speculative fiction and distinguished aesthetic works towards actualizing a sustainable future focused mainly on renewable energy, living in harmony with nature, and the better future envisioned through both. In every issue, we will share some of our favourite Solarpunk and Hopepunk visuals, illuminating speculative visions of our regenerative future in the form of visual essays. Our Solarpunk guest this time is Caro Avedano, who offers us a biophilic architecture immersion through images she created with Midjourney. We look forward to revealing the third climate of Cosmos—and its steward—in our third issue! My sincere appreciation goes to all of our guests for contributing their gifts and voices to The Weave and to you, our reader, for giving us the opportunity to amplify them. Our best wishes for a new year filled with joy, abundance and peace. With love, Barbara

WHO AM I? The Inner Process of Outer Change

W

hat an extraordinary time to be alive. Humanity is in the midst of change at every level of existence. Wherever we are—and whatever our individual and collective circumstance—every one of us alive today has a role to play in the determination of the future of all life. What you and I choose at every moment is not only relevant and meaningful. It’s critically important. Human and environmental wellbeing is challenged in the chaos of a rapidly-changing Earth and untold destructive impositions. Life can feel intense—and, for some, overwhelming. We live in a world of conflicting information, with truths and untruths abound. Some of the rhetoric focuses and capitalizes on, sensationalizes, and even denies problems. Bombarded with external voices and forces that have nothing to do with caring for nature or Natural Law, nature suffers. The human spirit suffers. Some of us don’t know what to believe or how to act—because our reality doesn’t come from within our Self. We may find ourselves feeling helpless, directing blame, or looking to leaders or authority figures to make decisions on how to provide for our wellbeing. When we look deeply, however, we see that these actions only contribute to more problems in the world. There are deeper truths that are meant to be guideposts for living meaningful lives in peace and harmony with each other and all living beings. Knowing the Self lies at the heart of the meaning of life. “Who am I?” is an existential wonderment as old as humanity. It is our individual understanding of the self—added up like pieces to a puzzle— that determines the condition of the collective human species and, in turn, the condition of the natural world.

HEAL

In a world now dangerously out of balance, change is paramount yet ambitious. Changing on the individual level is strenuous enough. How does an entire world change? As my husband, Aboriginal elder, Bob Randall, divulged, “What leads to a cultural shift in a nation of people is an increase in the number of people who can shift as individuals. It starts with the individual, then the family, then the community, then the nation and finally, the world as a whole.” But what does change within the individual entail? Where do we start within ourselves? “Let’s start at the very beginning”, opines a classic children’s song. Change is the a-b-c of the story of being human and the do-re-me of the songs of life. By individually reclaiming the truth of who we are, we open ourselves to experiencing the truth of our collective identity in connection and unity. We can “be the change we want to see in the world”, as Gandhi implored. But how does knowing the truth of who we are affect change? Honest self-identity begins with recognizing that all beings—plants, animals, elementals, humans and every part of natural creation—are interconnected. We are all family, born to the Earth Mother. Natural Law provides that every being lives within a relationship dynamic of interconnectedness. All is connected through the energy of being alive.

22

By being its unique self, every being—whether it is a grain of sand, a drop of water, an animal, a plant or a human—creatively contributes to the whole. Our role in life is to become part of all there is, knowing and serving the sacredness and beauty of Creation. We are all connected when we each contribute our uniqueness. It is a gift we give ourselves, to be both sovereign and one. We are all threads of a profoundly intricate, spiritual and physical web. When we are born, we come from the spirit realm of oneness into the brilliance of the physical realm. Moving from the eternal and infinite permanence of the ethereal body, we bring ourselves to reside in an impermanent physical body for a time. It is how we think and act during our short stay in this realm that determines the quality of the web we weave together. Who am I as a thread? Who are you as a thread and what are we weaving together? The design of the grander Weave is ingrained in the choice of every thread. As Cherokee Grandmother Redleaf wisely said to me, “When you choose to do, something is created. When you choose not to do, something is also created. But when you choose not to choose, nothing is created at all.” As humans, we have within us a drive to survive, a drive to connect and belong, and a drive to create. Opposite energies always walk together in harmony—the good and the bad in perfect union. Everything we choose to create contributes to either side of the coin. It’s up to each of us to know if we are contributing to the problem or to the solution. We must become clear about whether we are withholding what we are able to contribute in life by choosing not to choose.

BY BARBARA SCHACHT RANDALL

Every time you have a sad thought, you must match it with a thought of gratitude... This is your work, because, in the natural order of things, everything walks together with its opposite. This will give you the internal structure from which you will do external work of service.” – Bob Randall, Yankunytjatjara Nation, Mutitjulu/Uluru

The gift of free will can be seen as an opportunity or a challenge in a world that is so out of balance. We are invited to disconnect from unhealthy family dynamics and social constructs, and instead commit to connecting with Nature. Experiencing trauma and loss can be overwhelming, yet there is an art to appropriately assisting others in their grieving without enabling them to become stuck in their grief. This is where the practice of relating to the Creative Force comes in. The natural law of the Creative Force perpetually expresses itself within the cycle of life. It is the ever-present promise of the unborn in the womb of the Sacred Feminine. We get in touch with the Sacred Feminine by relating the promises of unborn life, and only through this are soothed as we tend to losses in our experiences. Recognizing the continuity of life gives us the inner strength

to provide care and support to those around us in their time of need. We are able to see that our choices in the present affect the wellbeing of new life, both human and non-human, both in the present and the future. Regeneration, as a movement, is us, as humans, doing our part to unravel layers of wrongdoings to Nature so that we contribute to and support the living Creative Force of Life as we birth new life and give it the privilege of unhindered expression. It is the softness of actioned tendering that nurtures and restores. Tending to creation in this way is the way of tending to the regeneration of the Self. It is our individual and collective medicine.

23

BY BARBARA SCHACHT RANDALL

There are so many ways to consume and share this medicine. As a monk once pointed out to me, “Everyone needs water, and there are many wells from which to drink.” We may stop and mindfully drink from the warmth of the sun, or we can choose to stand, sit, or lie on the earth and receive her through our minds, hearts, and sense organs. We can drink from the well of positivity by zooming out from the negative voices and zooming in to our shared heart connection. We may choose to nourish ourselves through pausing before reacting, and replacing a harsh emotion with a kinder thought of understanding. We may replenish ourselves by dancing and singing and creating art to honour nature. We can choose to engage with thoughts of gratitude for the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the plants and animals that sustain us. We can live in the embodiment of prayer—taking every opportunity to care for each other and all life and expanding our capacity to listen to the soft, sweet voice of love—the Superconsciousness of Creation and our ultimate Truth. As we live, let us each contribute to a story of love and responsibility for the benefit of all creation now and to come and learn to model this such that our children will learn to do the same. In that process, we must aim to never stop learning, for “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” Our teacher is both the outer nature that we can see and our inner nature which may be hidden. And, now, we are being offered lessons from Indigenous Wisdom Keepers.

Let them be our teachers, as they have lived in harmony and oneness with nature since the beginning of time. As Grandmother Redleaf revealed to me, “There is no new medicine.” Ancient knowledge is not out of date. It is these timeless, universal teachings that comprehensively speak to what it means to be a good human in symbiosis with all life. Wisdom teachings, disseminated by wisdom keepers and used with conscious discernment and intention, are the medicine for our world. It is up to each of us to honour these gifts and to embody them in thought, word and deed. In closing, I would like to leave you with a transformational practice given to me by my husband. It is a way of doing the inner work which affects outer change. It is in the moment that a challenging emotion arises that we can choose to add an opposite thought like compassion, empathy, gratitude, curiosity... This is a way of managing the mind such that we don’t get stuck in emotions that emerge from reminders of past hurt or trauma. This foundational practice, applied when a difficult emotion arises, frees us from old stories and allows us to see and connect to the wondrous beauty of life. I pass this on to you… with love.

WEAVING ANCIENT WISDOM INTO OUR MODERN WORLD Can this Fusion Transform Humanity’s Future?

W

hat if something most of humanity has forgotten—holds the key to transforming our future? What if civilization’s incessant race to create ever better tools and technologies to achieve mastery over the physical world made us forget to also attain mastery of the world within us? What happens when we remember our connection to this inner world and to the Universe of which we are a part? There is much more to existence than the physical realm we perceive with our eyes. As a humanitarian filmmaker, my journeys have taken me to 62 countries over the last 30 years. In my first few years, I found myself increasingly transformed by my travels—through being exposed to vastly different places than what I knew growing up in Canada. Traveling is a wonderful and humbling teacher. I began to realize it was not new places that were transforming me. It was new people and new ideas. It was a multitude of cultures with different perceptions of the world. It was being confronted with cultures that not only saw the world differently but interacted with it differently. This is what expanded my mind and my heart. But it was only the beginning.

“Roots of a Fractal Universe”: digital art piece created by Malcom Carter as an artistic representation of the fractal interconnectedness of the Universe.

REWILD

by Malcom Carter

The deeper changes began when I started not just exploring our modern world, but when I began to connect to indigenous people and cultures. I began to appreciate that they have thousands of years of accumulated wisdom, honed by being deeply connected to the nature around them, the cycles of life and death, of growth and decay, the interconnectedness of all things—and the deep mysteries of the unseen world. In some ways, humanity crossed the Rubicon with the Industrial Revolution. Over the last centuries, we have made truly extraordinary advances in technology—but at what cost? As more and more people started moving to cities and working in manufacturing, they became more disconnected from natural cycles—and more connected to man-made cycles. We used to work with nature, but then we became advanced

28

enough to bend nature to our will. We developed a toxic relationship with nature as we overcame obstacles that have been challenges for millennia. As a result, we began to deify the science and the technology that made it all possible. Our technology and our ability to create have grown so exponentially that it is estimated that all human knowledge doubles every thirteen months! And this rate continues to accelerate. It is clear that our technology is constantly improving, but what of our humanity? Have we really become better humans? Or do we continue to repeat the same patterns over and over again—seeming not to learn from our past tragic mistakes?

BY MALCOM CARTER

I have seen many things as a humanitarian filmmaker: some of the very best of humanity and some of the very worst. We have had two world wars, developed nuclear weapons capable of destroying life on a massive scale and contributed greatly to the changes in our climate. We are creating increasingly powerful technology, but lack the wisdom to use it for the highest good of humanity. Many people think technology will save us from the biggest problems confronting humanity, however, technology is neutral—neither ‘good’ nor ‘bad.’ It doesn’t have consciousness. It just is. Electricity can be used to make electric blankets or electric chairs. But electricity doesn’t care what it creates—it is just a tool, incapable of preference or feeling. Thus, it is the “conscious creation” of technology and the

“conscious application” of technology that are important. We get to decide how it is used. If it is to make a positive difference, we need to exercise more wisdom. We can start by reconnecting humans—not just to nature, but to others and even themselves. Yet, how do we reconnect humanity? We can raise humanity’s consciousness by looking at human consciousness as a “technology” capable of being developed. It, too, is a tool, able to be shaped with care and utilized with intention. So how can we advance this technology and raise our collective frequency?

by Malcom Carter

REWILD

The internet ushered in the age of information and the age of knowledge. But it didn’t usher in the age of wisdom. Knowledge isn’t wisdom—and we often confuse the two. We have so much information in this “information age” of ours that we are drowning in it. We know so much, but that does not make us wise. There is something missing. I recently got to spend some time with Geshe Tenzin Lhakdor, who is the head of the Tibetan Archives, which keeps hold of all the ancient texts and the wisdom perfection sutras. He shared a wisdom teaching, using the metaphor of a ship. “Information is like reading many books on how to build a ship, but you still can’t yet build a ship. Knowledge is knowing how to build a ship. Wisdom is knowing how to best use the ship.” One way to acquire wisdom is through the process of repeatedly applying knowledge over time. As you apply knowledge, you learn from the results— from the successes, but also from the learning experiences that didn’t go exactly as planned. The next time, you are able to refine your approach and get different results, eventually achieving the wisdom of knowing how to apply knowledge. Many cultures have techniques and processes that have been honed over thousands of years, which help them to transition from the knowledge stage to the wisdom stage more quickly. The modern world, however, contains the technology of the

30

by Peter Ruprecht

internet, which allows us to “crowdsource” wisdom. This has changed the game altogether. People used to solve problems for themselves—but, with the internet, people can now share their solutions globally with each other, and we can collectively become wiser, faster. This collaborative sharing of knowledge is vital for our future. The more humans actively participate in this process, the quicker we can see improvement in the world on a larger scale. Our modern world also lacks an understanding and appreciation for the unseen world. This is something we have lost over time. The modern era is so focused on the material world, and on materialistic things, that we have forgotten there is so much more to the Universe than we can see with our eyes, or experience with our five senses. The fabric of reality is not just woven with material elements. It is woven with invisible elements that are difficult to grasp. And the invisible realm is perhaps even more powerful than the world we can see.

Modern science has begun to discover quantum physics. Nikola Tesla said, “If you want to understand the Universe, think in terms of energy, frequency, and vibration.” Science has taught us that there is a constant, dynamic dance between the quantum and material world. We have discovered that the principles of the quantum world have a striking resemblance to the principles of indigenous wisdom. Science has begun to corroborate what indigenous cultures have known for a long time. For example, indigenous people have long known that everything is connected and constantly communicating. Modern science has shown that not only is everything always communicating with everything else but that this happens through the transmission of energy, which can be tuned into and understood. We know now that there is a feedback loop at the quantum level, where the fractal nature of the Universe provides feedback to itself—and that how

a person or the collective tribe acts has an effect on the whole field due to this recursive feedback. Perhaps indigenous wisdom keepers would garner more respect if we began to see them as ‘quantum physicists’ who have been refining their knowledge for thousands of years. Quantum physics is a new field that has only developed within Western science in the last 100 years, but it may help us unlock the secrets of the indigenous worldview. Science is proving, more and more, that we are one human family. In fact, it has proven that all humanity is 99.9% identical. Hopefully this knowledge encourages more of us to focus on all that we share, the genius and innovative spirit we all possess, instead of focusing on minute differences in ethnicity and culture. We have a tendency to judge and discriminate against earlier or ‘primitive’ cultures, instead of recognizing

that different cultures—from different times and different places—focused their energies in different ways. It is important to challenge what we consider “primitive”, as the notion that they are “primitive” is very myopic, only focusing on what the modern world considers knowledge. The anthropologist Wade Davis helps us to dispel stereotypes of indigenous culture and expand our understanding of “primitive” ways of life. Through his work, he exposes the extraordinary achievements of the Polynesian wayfinders, who would sit monk-like on the stern of their vessel, without a compass, and somehow manage to navigate from Hawaii to Easter Island—a journey of over 7,000 km to a piece of land which is only 20 km wide! Throughout this voyage, they were taking in extraordinary amounts of information concerning every shift of the wind, the positions of the Sun and stars, tracking the waves and tides,

the set and drift of the current—all with amazing accuracy. They demonstrated an incredible synthesis of knowledge from many ‘sciences’—in a culture with no written word. They would not have been able to achieve this feat unless they were in deep communion with the forces of nature—and the Universe itself. This concept of unspeakable knowledge leads nicely into the history of another civilization, from halfway around the world. The Ancient Greeks were another ‘primitive’ society with a remarkable amount of knowledge. We know from historical texts that the Greeks theorized about the existence of atoms 2,000 years before modern science could prove their existence. They were said to have had a “knowing”. Rather than discovering this knowledge through the scientific means we have today, this theory was “discovered” in a different way.

REWILD

There are two different types of wisdom. First, there is learned or acquired wisdom, which is obtained through reflection, imitation or experience. And then there is another form of wisdom, which is more intangible and ethereal. It can be a bit hard to put into words—and that is intuitive wisdom. This is a kind of wisdom that is deeper, and very special. I have witnessed many instances of intuitive wisdom from elders with whom we worked during our various film projects. It comes from connecting to wisdom outside of oneself—connecting with nature and the cosmos itself. Intuitive wisdom is wisdom divined using the “inner net,” not the internet. It requires what elders refer to as “receiving downloads”—when one receives information through having a direct connection with source

energy. Having this kind of relationship with the Universe often requires years of work to learn how to become attuned. Over time, you begin to receive a clear signal with fewer distortions. A potent example of this is plant medicine in the Amazon. Making plant medicine is not by trial and error. If you ask the shaman, they will tell you it is only possible through being in communion with the plants. “The plants talk to us”, they will say. Considering the many thousands of plants and the near-infinite number of possible combinations, the Edison trial-and-error approach would have left the whole tribe dead. There is a limited number of people to “experiment” with—and high risks associated with each experiment. Thus,

the normative way of acquiring knowledge is not feasible. The only way that the tribe survives is for the shaman to commune with the plants and receive downloads that lead to inner knowing. This requires—other than harmony and balance— holistic, big-picture, connected thinking which recognizes the oneness of all things. Shamans pass this knowledge down through stories and sacred ceremonies, so that generation after generation are taught how to access this immense source of wisdom and continue what has been learned. Wisdom is no longer “thought” from that perspective. It is “felt” as a knowingness in the being of each person. When we gain wisdom, we brighten our own light. I have always loved the saying that “A single candle can light a thousand other candles without the

A single candle can light a thousand other candles without the light of the original candle being diminished. light of the original candle being diminished.” I find this to be especially true when it comes to sharing wisdom. The shamans and wisdom keepers have preserved their knowledge for thousands of years, largely keeping it within their tribes. Now, many around the world are getting the message that it is time to pass it further on—to transition from “wisdom keepers” to “wisdom sharers”. This is where the technology of the modern world

can be very powerful, as this wisdom must be spread beyond their local tribe. Instead of just disseminating it to hundreds of people within a tribe, it can now be shared with millions of people around the globe. This is an incredible opportunity for humanity, and we need to support it. My team and I have been working on numerous projects to help share this timeless wisdom. We have filmed a documentary called “Initiation”, still in process, that follows indigenous elders from all over the world as they go to the sacred sites of Egypt and follow the ancient ceremonial protocols from the emerald tablets at each temple site. We also have a film titled “Transformation”, also still in process, that follows a group of indigenous elders from around the world to different power

spots called ley sites, where the energy grids of the planet cross, to participate in special sacred ceremonies. These power spots include the Great Pyramid of Giza, Mount Shasta, one of the most sacred places in Hawaii, and the Azores Islands in the Atlantic Ocean—a place many believe is connected to the ancient Atlantean civilization. We continue to work to gather funding for these projects to be able to bring their light to the world. I previously completed a film entitled “The Connected Universe”, narrated by Sir Patrick Stewart, which explores new ideas in science that seek to understand how the Universe is able to be connected at a quantum level and how quantum and cosmological science can be unified. This project took many years and approximately 15,000

hours of work to complete. My film career has been an incredible journey—going from cutting-edge ideas in science to ancient and indigenous wisdom and seeing the similarities along the way. The more I learn from these elders, the more I realize there is so much I still don’t know. I am deeply inspired to be constantly learning and growing, and seeking to deepen my wisdom in the journey of my human experience. Every human around the world is in a different place on their path to deeper knowledge and wisdom. I am excited to continue to document peoples’ journeys through the art of storytelling and through the medium of film. In many ways, it is a perfect partnership. Shamans use storytelling to share, and filmmaking is powerful storytelling. It is my life’s passion to use film to help make a difference in the world, just as shamans use ceremonies to do the same. By doing my best to earn the trust of the elders, and with their permission to share some of the ceremonies on film, we can work together to shine this light and amplify it so it is accessible to the entire world. These elders are a bridge that allow us to connect with the wisdom and energies of nature, to fulfill the ultimate dream of sharing it with our global tribe—our one human family. I have had the privilege of working with some of the most outstanding scientists, thinkers and technologists in the world. I have worked with NASA think tanks and with other truly incredible modern minds. My life’s work has led me to believe that there is wisdom stretching from the Amazon

on Earth to the astronauts in space. By honouring and respecting all that humanity has learned in its many different iterations, we have a chance to fuse the best of modern technology with the highly-synergistic consciousness of ancient and indigenous cultures—to create the best path forward for humanity. I am committed to doing whatever it takes to bring these ideas forward. Thank you for taking the time to read this and explore these ideas with me. The word “namaste” means “the light in me recognizes the light in you.” Let your light shine bright. I hope you are inspired to pursue a path that deepens your wisdom and helps your light to shine in the brightest possible way.

heck in with yourself. How are you feeling right now? Do you feel rejuvenated and spacious? Are you aware of your own thoughts yet tapped into the greater oneness that is all that there is? In other words: are you oriented towards others while remaining centered in yourself? Are you feeling empathic and wanting to support others? Or are you just on autopilot and going through the motions? Are you just mulling over a never-ending to-do list, ‘shoulding’ yourself in order to survive and feel safe? All of these energies have their time and place. When there is a lion chasing you, survival mode is crucial. But getting stuck in survival mode cultivates

38

a very tunnel-vision version of reality. Humanity cannot thrive if we stick to a reactive, survivalist way of being—and simply being empathic isn’t enough. Our reality is shaped by a process of perceptual selectivity largely based on our individual, subconscious perspectives. Here’s an exercise to test this: Think of a situation from a survival-mode standpoint. Now try to shift and consider it from an everyday, business-as-usual standpoint. Now let’s shift again and ponder it from a place of deep consideration for your identity and stories and the identity and stories of others—from a place of self-awareness, yet inclusion. Finally, shift and contemplate it from the place where all identities

relate in alignment with our true nature—because we no longer see ourselves as separate from nature itself. Bringing an increased level of consciousness into our lives dissolves a lot of the problems we are seeking to solve—especially the big ones.

For humanity to truly thrive, we need to shift our perspective, and not just react from an unconscious, survival point of view. This is to say, if there’s a lion, it is best to run. However, the rest of our lives require a different level of engagement with the world. When we choose to introduce conscious energy into our projects and relationships, we unlock a whole new space of possibility. Being conscious allows us to create and

I make it sound simpler than it is. Many of us were raised in societies that conditioned us to spend much of our time tending to lower-consciousness needs. It is like we are checked out. Allowing ourselves to be a little more sensitive encourages us to check in with other peoples’ feelings and perhaps our own, but we may still struggle to see the greater whole. So then how does one actually begin to move towards consciousness and thrive?

39

THRIVE

Being conscious allows us to create and relate in alignment with our true nature—because we no longer see ourselves as separate from nature itself.

SEE IN WHOLES.

SLOW DOWN.

Conscious energy invites the ego, the I, the individualized self, to fall away. It eases us into the zoomed-out perspective of the system, of the whole. Using the technique of imaging, we can close our eyes and imagine the system at work, in order to better understand the whole. A good example is the human body. Thinking in an individuated way, you may only see certain organs, such as the lungs. But thinking in a conscious way, you would see the whole body and all its parts together. You would see all the ways the organs, tissues and nerves interrelate and support one another. If you think of the lungs as just one part of a web of interconnected parts, you realize you must protect all of those parts for the lungs to work.

You cannot decondition yourself out of a place of survival energy, and you cannot transcend that energy if you are always rushing. However, slowing down can be scary. It is the ultimate act of evolution and revolution when we begin to question what really defines us and what we are worth. When you step out of the narrative of productivity as the ultimate indicator of value, you have more space to experience yourself. You see your thoughts and patterns, where you are showing up consciously and where you are not. It will feel uncomfortable at first, but lean into it. Discomfort is a sign you are playing with your edge. Pause and take deep breaths, turn off your phone, lie down and stare at your ceiling, or go out in nature and just observe. Take naps. Let your mind enter a restful state. You can do this any time you feel your energy shifting into a lower state of being. See if you can fight the sense of urgency. Return to tasks when you feel expansive. In the beginning, this might take a long time, but, as you practice and normalize living in an expanded state, it will take less time.

WAIT. It’s not about having the solution to the problem. It’s about waiting for the right path to appear. You know it when it does, because you can feel it in your body. We have been taught to ignore that feeling and utilize our heads to think things through. In order to thrive, we have to have the patience to wait for that feeling, the call that tells us we are headed in the right direction. Many of us were taught that “time is money” and our worth is based on how productive we are. Who told you that doing nothing, or just simply playing, isn’t enough? And why is it you believe that? It is also typical not to trust that feeling when it comes. I’ve talked myself out of it, thinking “This can’t be real.” However, when I follow that feeling and intuition, that sense of flow, I almost always feel better than when I push through with the mind as my guide.

Discomfort is a sign you are playing with your edge.

SELF- EXAMINE. We can’t grow until we figure out what’s holding us back. Ritualized processes of self-examination allow us to be in a continuous process of self-disruption. If we consistently disrupt our own thinking, we move towards higher orders of consciousness. Self-examination can be simple—like a daily journaling practice. Any framework that allows you to discover your patterns of behavior is a useful one. Awareness is the first step towards change. To spend more time in conscious energy, we need to decondition ourselves, and that takes work. It is also an intergenerational process. We are laying the groundwork for changes in being which impact future generations will heed, and maybe even use as a jumping-off point in their own journeys. Be gentle with yourself, but maintain awareness.

42

Self-awareness requires us to think of ourselves as part of a system. Each part has an intricate impact on another. For our system to function well, it needs to be in balanced flow or in ‘right relation’. Stuck energy in any part of ourselves ultimately stagnates and collapses the system. If there is too much energy concentrated in any certain part of our lives, the system can move out of homeostasis and collapse. Our work consists of identifying when we have become stuck and where stuck energy exists in our body, so that we may expand our conscious self-awareness. Ask yourself: are you embodying the regenerative community culture you declare and the change you want to see in the world? If we want to be the leaders of a change in humanity, we have to fully embody it.

CREATE DEDICATED SPACE. From my own experience, I saw how hard it was to do all of this alone and keep the faith that I was moving in the right direction. So I created the Whole Human Incubator to be a dedicated space to slow down, self-examine, and move towards conscious energy in every part of our lives—while sharing it with other humans on the same journey. In the Whole Human Incubator, we look at ourselves as a system, and we use the hexagram as a framework. Each participant defines six principal points in their lives in which they feel like they aren’t in balance and flow, and where they want to elevate their energy. We work on many levels of our ‘self’ in the Whole Human Incubator: our mind, body, friendships, family, community, purpose, creativity, thought

patterns and beliefs, to name a few. We spend one month digging into each area. We practice slowing down our thinking, examining our past, and clearing energy to move into alignment with what wants to emerge. We engage in experiments to start cultivating that new energy in our body, so that we may normalize it. And we do it all while sharing in the joy of community. Because each of us can be an awakening mirror for another—if we decide that we want to truly see—and be seen. ● Click on this link to learn more to be notified when the next round begins!

DREAM

It’s a gray day where Victor calls home in Portugal. I start our conversation by asking him what prompted the creation of the Gathering of Tribes—a dream that, as he describes, had been fermenting for 23 years. What follows is an hour-long exchange in which Victor shares the dream, the inspiration, the ingredients, the wisdom and the philosophy that came together to bring GoT to life—as well as his vision of what he doesn’t expect it to be. You’re invited to join us.

THE DREAM “My dream was for people to come to the event and get really excited about its transformative power. [...] I wanted to have this atmosphere where every person I see smiles at me and gives me a hug. Where I feel connected, care for and feel cared for. [...] My dream was to create a festival after which you go back home and you’re like, ‘I know how I’m going to interweave this feeling and bring my reality closer to this idea.’”

THE INGREDIENTS The best of Burning Man + the best of re:build People coming together in tribes The spirit of regeneration Questions Co-creation Philosophy Play Art

THE INSPIRATION “My Burning Man experience opened my eyes to the possibility of a different way of doing events. Rather than having a script and a schedule, just unleashing people’s creativity—and creating a culture where everybody feels free and collaborates. Rather than top-down programming, creativity from the bottom up. So that stayed with me for life.”

48

“Let’s take the best of the Burning Man concept, the best we have in re:build, the spirit of regeneration and people coming together around ideas of how to build regenerative villages? How to regenerate the Earth? How to live a life which we feel is creating a positive impact on the world? Let’s blend those things together and see if we can make an event around that.”

by Evgenia Emets

THE WISDOM “The more digitally connected we get, the more valuable and special the time we spend together in person becomes.” “I really believe that, by inviting the tribes to do this work of building a camp, we will build the skill and the muscle of collaboration...” “Learning involves embracing a lot of failure. If you’re not messing things up, that means you’re not learning, because you’re probably doing what you know. To learn means to try things and fail at them over and over and over again.” “One thing that has limited the impact of the sustainability movement is the focus on technical solutions, whether it’s carbon or agriculture, or circular economy. I think that our real crisis is much deeper.”

“Let’s change the world. Let’s make it more beautiful, but in a playful manner.” – Victor Vorski

THE PHILOSOPHY “I love this idea that people can come and declare belonging to a tribe that they choose themselves, as opposed to the tribes that society pushes on us—whether it’s your ethnic identity, or your national identity. [...] I do think that belonging is part of our nature, and we naturally want to belong to a tribe. But we want to belong to a tribe that we feel aligned with, that we feel connected with through its values and purpose.” “A key thing about regeneration is the learning mindset. So I personally believe that regeneration will never be done. And that’s what’s exciting about it, we’re not going to come up with the regenerative playbook Bible.[...] It’s about continuing to ask the question.” “Playfulness means that you’re enjoying the process. It’s not outcome-based. You’re playing because the purpose of play is to play.”

“Art and spirituality are integral to how we create culture.” “Regeneration is a rethinking of most of the fabric of our society, which doesn’t mean that we throw everything out and start from scratch. It means that we really consider what is serving us and what is creating the society that we want now, which will allow us to survive into the future and be more conscious about all aspects of our life.” “I have come to appreciate that, much more important than our values, is what we do to keep them alive. Because any group of people can sit down and, in an hour or two, write down their ten or fifteen values, all nice and aspirational—but how do you keep them alive? The first step, as you said, is sensing that [...] More important than our values is what we are doing to keep them alive.”

WEAVE

The purpose of The Gathering of Tribes is to support the growth of regenerative tribes and the connections between them.

T

hroughout history, tribes have gathered to connect, to make peace, to learn, to worship, to dance, to build friendships, and to make alliances. Our strength as a species lies in our ability to act collectively; gatherings enable us to build the relationships we need to act in harmony.

From re:build, GoT takes its purpose of building the regenerative ecosystem. Unlike re:build, which is focused on regenerative villages, GoT is interested in the whole spectrum of regeneration—including regenerative organisations, art, philosophy and spirituality.

The purpose of The Gathering of Tribes is to support the growth of regenerative tribes and the connections between them.

From Burning Man, GoT takes the principle of having no spectators—inviting all participants into the co-creation. The camps provide organisation by creating a programme and sharing with the community what they feel called to, as well as welcoming participants and taking care of their food and shelter needs.

As the child of re:build and Burning Man, The Gathering of Tribes (GoT) has attributes of both. At the same time, it is its own being, distinct from its parents. Born out of the reality of our times and shaped by the opportunities and challenges humanity is facing today, it aims to learn from the wisdom of its gathering ancestors, as a festival appropriate for the regenerative, internetconnected, collapse-facing times we live in.

FROM THE GATHERING INTO “REAL LIFE” After many festivals, you return home and may experience a bit of a culture shock. You face the return to a reality which is not serving you; a livelihood which is not nourishing your soul, a life where you’re not contributing to the fullest extent. GoT is different in that you, instead, go home with new personal relationships and meaningful projects that will enrich you and your other tribes. Rather than arriving home with that common, sinking thought of “great experience, but now what?!”, you come home energised, knowing what you will do next to make your life more regenerative, and your tribe more thriving.

Whilst this aspect of the gathering will take many iterations to develop, we believe in the bonds forming within our tribe and strengthening our ability to do projects together. Inspiration and learning lead to ideas which grow into projects. Meaningful conversations with other tribes result in collaborations and joint projects.

WEAVE

THE ORGANISATION The Gathering of Tribes was co-created by the camps and all the participants—250 of us in total. We gathered because we sensed the need to come together in person, in order to share and celebrate. We came together because we are excited about the regenerative ecosystem that is being created, and the sense of hope and potential it brings to our lives. It provides us with the promise of purposeful livelihoods. This co-creative energy is at the core of GoT. In order for that creativity to be unleashed, for participants to play joyfully, someone needs to prepare the playground and send the invitation to Come Play! The Gathering was instigated by me, a member of the re:build core team and founder of EarthSkyLab. I went to Burning Man for the first time in 1999, when I was 27 years old. It has had a life-long impact on me and how I see events—it has made me realise the magic that can happen when you release the need to have top-down programming and, instead, unleash the creativity of all the event participants. I was fortunate enough to go to Burning Man two more times, in 2000 and 2004, and this cemented my belief in the power of the “no-spectators” mentality. Burning Man left me wondering, “Why can’t every day of my life feel like this?” This awe-filled question led me directly onto the path to the villagebuilding movement.

58

At the same time, I felt that Burning Man might be missing something. Whilst an incredible, beautiful and powerful event, it felt disconnected from our normal lives. Its invitation of “Welcome Home” is, in fact, an impossible promise, given that one cannot live in a hedonistic party world, where money does not exist, for 365 days a year. A few decades of searching for how to integrate the two worlds brought me to re:build and the regenerative ecosystem. I co-founded re:build and tried to imbue the open-creativity of Burning Man into the design of its events. However, this was only possible in a structured programme in limited ways. I felt that the regenerative ecosystem has grown enough that it deserves its own gathering. I envisioned a space full of creativity, containing the serendipity-accelerating power of a no-spectators, co-created event—to create real-world, lasting impact in peoples’ lives. I imagined something that wasn’t just about building stunning ephemeral structures, but rather a meeting of communities to strengthen real-world tribes outside of the bubble. Thus, the Gathering of Tribes was born.

re:build A gathering for building regenerative villages and futures

EarthSkyLab Thriving human habitats for deep connection with nature, people and the future

Gathering of Tribes A Gathering of Tribes regenerating People, Planet, Prosperity & Purpose

THE FUTURE I have committed to instigating a gathering of regenerative tribes every two years for at least the next ten years. The theme for 2024 is “52 Tribes Regenerating the Earth”. If you have any suggestions about which tribes should be invited, please feel free to reach out to me! The Gathering of Tribes 2024 will be more focused on maintaining the tribes structure, with all participants joining a camp organised by a tribe. In other words, there will be no “general admission tickets”. Of course, many tribes will welcome newcomers into their camp, but we want every participant to have a sense of belonging to the tribe they are participating with. This will ensure that, as GoT grows to thousands or tens of thousands, the experience remains human-sized and you feel that you are part of a group of people you know and belong to. The tribes-only organisation will also enable the organisers to more clearly support them in organising their respective camps, while giving the tribes the responsibility of welcoming participants into the event and making sure everyone feels at home.

The Gathering of Tribes is a serendipity accelerator.

A key lesson from this year has been that it is important to make rules. When any group of humans gather, norms should be set and agreements ought to be made. As the purpose of the gathering is to build the muscle of horizontal collaboration within the regenerative ecosystem (rather than engaging in a top-down structure), our organisation will set rules for everyone to adhere to. We will propagate this refreshing hierarchical system by having the 2024 event governed by a council of the gathering—a deliberative body with a representative from each camp, designed to agree to certain rules that are necessary for the functioning of the gathering, such as rules for noise. On the one hand, September 2024 feels a long way away. On the other hand, we hope to grow to 52 tribes and 1,000-1,500 participants by then, so it’s really not that much time at all to get organised! We better get started! If you want to contribute to the building of this remarkable regenerative ecosystem, if you would like to participate in creating a new kind of festival, celebration, and gathering for the regenerative era, or if you would be interested in helping us organise The Gathering of Tribes for 2024, please contact team@gatheringoftribes.earth or message me on Telegram @vvorski.

T

he Gathering of Tribes was a multidimensional and novel regenerative event that took place from September 14-18 in Alentejo, Portugal. As a conglomeration of unique tribes, each with their own voice and purpose, the event was a celebration of perspectives on how to co-create and prototype regenerative ways of living. We honor all tribes for their contribution to the village-building movement, and for being catalysts for this brand new world we have all envisioned. Thank you for coming to play with us in our beautiful and unique energetic playground! This gathering is crucial for setting the foundation for regenerative lifestyles, projects and networks. We have already laid witness to wonderful synchronicities arising from the space we co-created at GoT, as well as a lot of synergies leading to exciting, collaborative partnerships. With this piece, we hope to capture and harvest these energies and bring them together to form a blueprint for other events and projects. We are grateful for being part of this empowering and alchemising bridging process toward a new paradigm. The Weave invites you to a multimedia celebration of GoT. We hope to give those who couldn’t attend the gathering the opportunity to have a taste of its magic. Similarly, we hope to provide a beautiful experience of remembrance to all the participants who were present at GoT as we revisit and relive the magic that we, together, wove during those five days. by Evgenia Emets

THE HOST

by Skanking Farmers

Skanking Farmers are creating a world where nature and all beings thrive, expressing the fulness of their potential and contributing to the rise of global consciousness through regenerative actions. They are a collective of people supporting the regeneration of Alentejo, promoting the creation of cultural hubs in the countryside of Portugal, and offering spaces for growth and healing.

We learn by doing, and do so publicly.

The regeneration of their land and of the wider region is their primary focus. Skanking Farmers work with syntropic agriculture specialists to develop food forests, rebuild top soil, create tree nurseries, grow their own organic vegetables, and more. The project is hosted on a very special land surrounded by the Mira river, which gives the project both opportunities and challenges. Skanking Farmers believe they can be a case study for regeneration in semi-desert conditions. They also believe that arts and culture are core elements in the regeneration of our planet and a key tool on the journey toward freedom of thought. They aim to promote, empower and encourage artists from their region and beyond through cultural events, artist residencies, mentoring, and more. 67

THE CAMPS

This has been a powerful example of how we can support each other if we have a safe space to express our needs and feel personally connected to a like-minded collective. This is an essential element that Gaianet wants to bring, and we feel this format wants to be further developed, both offline and online. Stay tuned! We feel that GoT has been a massive catalyser for the regenerative movement and for Gaianet as well. For many, Gaianet and a New Earth have become real in these five days. The Gaianet Camp was a transformative and healing experience. People received connection, love, authenticity, truth, transparency, shared humanness, clusterfucks of synchronicity, intimacy and aliveness. A place to be truly ourselves, a feeling of coming home, finding family, and finding power in knowing that we are not alone in this crazy world.” – The Gaianet Team

ALMAOHANA CAMP

GAIANET CAMP

The AlmaOhana Camp was centered around a cooperative that was started in southwest Portugal in 2021 by an international group of dreamers. AlmaOhana embraces land regeneration and reforestation, designs water retention landscapes, and experiments with a life based on permaculture principles. AlmaOhana yearns to build a healing biotope in which to live, work and create, balancing self-realisation with a service to all. The present tribes offered spaces and retreats for people to connect and support one another, focusing on holistic health while also aiming for self-sustainability.

Gaianet brings together networks where heart-conscious project leaders, experts and professionals connect to share knowledge, network and resources. Gaianet aims to weave the wisdom of nature into the world of business, supporting the Reset Generation via real-world projects that contribute to the shifting of humanity into a new paradigm—one that more accurately represents our inherent abundance. At GoT, the Gaianet Camp facilitated “Soul Spaces”: safe spaces full of feminine energy where the soul is free to express itself and people can feel seen and heard.

The Gaianet Camp also offered a safe and loving integration space, exploring intimacy and meaningful conversations, and acting as a place for conscious workshops co-created by participants, such as the “Mycelium Activation” workshop, in which members could experience a give-and-ask-type economy. The present tribes’ energies were focused on embodying ‘love in action’, radical intimacy, playfight, the discovery of talents, ceremonial spaces, voices of Nature, and celebrating the elements and the four directions.

Our camp formed many deep connections and Elegant Earth came together as a team. We experienced the beautiful and diverse energies of many tribes, which was challenging at times for some. As a result of these connections, new teams and projects were formed. ELEGANT EARTH CAMP The Elegant Earth Camp was present to bridge current and new paradigms, and connect meta and grassroots initiatives with the heart at the center. The camp invited several corporate investors to meet, learn and connect with potential newparadigm projects. lifestyles and projects; empowering and guiding A-teams for projects that create a better world; building a network of good companies and planetary regeneration; supporting Humanity’s Phase Shift; instigating open-source and holistic-based community-building, local regenerative networks and villages, visibility of activism; activating social change empowered by technology and art; creating a local and global network of regenerative villages; and developing conscious tools and systems.

ETERNAL FOREST ART CAMP The Eternal Forest Camp brought together artists working with forest ecology, biodiversity and community and tribes that are closely connected to nature. The present tribes’ energies were focused on: creating participatory live performances, facilitating experiences and interventions that promote the regeneration of the planet and people, forming and revitalising harmonious ecosystems, building an evolved form of homes, neighborhoods and villages that keep us connected to nature and each other, accelerating the regenerative transition via gaming and technology, and hosting cozy parties with a vibe of family and friendship.

SILVEIRA CAMP The Silveira Camp was a place to be in symbiosis with nature while regenerating and bringing prosperity to the land around us. Silveira Tech is rebuilding an abandoned mountain village to create a global community where people connect around technology, regeneration and the spirit of togetherness. Silveira works to regenerate forests so that they may be resilient and fruitful for generations to come. The present tribes’ energies were focused on (re)building and (re)birthing villages

for us to work, live, and experience life together. Silveira & Cerdeira are re-starting from the ground up—reshaping the Portuguese landscape and re-designing the modern village. They aim to build a village based on regeneration, technology and community values that will change the way we live our lives for the better. They are weaving together a community of artists where creativity and nature serve all purposes: to rest, learn, create and inspire.

We had many beautiful experiences. With the work of the artists we offered transformative experiences in nature. Which were sitespecific and created in the moment from collaborating with the land, elements, landscape, human and other-than-human beings. [...] Forming one camp allowed us to meet each other, as many of those who came together belong to different communities in Portugal and other places internationally. It was a wonderful moment to see what everyone brings and where everyone is coming from. In the next two years our tribe will take time to inspire and encourage more people to join us, already co-creating before joining in the physical space.” – The Eternal Forest Team

ortugal has a massive problem with fires. Every year, fires strike, causing various degrees of destruction. In 2017, an estimated 24,000 hectares of land were burned, and more than 500 houses were partially or totally destroyed over a period of five days. In 2022, the area of Serra da Estrela has suffered more than 28,000 hectares of destruction from fires, which is more than 25% of its total area. Year after year, the flora and fauna populations are being decimated and our forests are gradually being destroyed. But why is all this happening? And why aren’t we learning from our mistakes? What are the solutions? “Due to its geographical characteristics, Portugal is among the European countries with the greatest vulnerability to these changes”, stated environmental organization ZERO in a press release to Lusa, adding that “in Portugal, climate change should be a national priority.”

92

PORTUGAL’S LOVE AFFAIR WITH EUCALYPTUS It is a well-known fact that climate change and outdated social structures are having a profoundly negative effect on humanity and nature as a whole. If we observe our Mother Earth, we can see this happening in real time. The issue in Portugal—apart from climate change—is the difficulty of changing the way forest management is currently implemented. Monocultures are a big problem. Eucalyptus plantations, for example, are killing the flora and fauna, destroying water cycles and causing forest fires when not monitored, due to their flammable nature. Eucalyptus is an Australian tree that was introduced to Portugal in 1925 in order to produce paper and has spread fast since. Currently, almost all Portuguese forests are eucalyptus, and eucalyptus forests are still growing. However, this is not only happening in Portugal; it is happening all over the world. Monocropping is destroying natural habitats and causing untold peril on the delicate balance of ecosystems. It is an area in which we really must do better. With all the technology we have access to in modern times, we have more power than ever to change the world. And it’s paramount that we do. Not only the fate of the planet is at stake, but the extinction of humanity itself!

WATCH THE VIDEO RMTERRA & KODAFOREST PLANTATION IN OITO VASOS, AMARANTE

RETURNING THE POWER TO THE PEOPLE! RMTerra (Reflorestação da Mãe Terra) was born in Portugal in 2017, when several bushfires ravaged miles of acres of land, transforming green and balanced grounds into war-like scenes. In my sorrow and despair, I felt the urge to do something to make a difference. I began volunteering, connecting with people through social media and networking with local associations in order to organize reforestation measures and climate activism. Eventually, I expanded these efforts to a national level, creating educational material to encourage communities to take action in their local environment. It has not been an easy process. Bureaucracies have restrained our effort to plant trees in public spaces, but we have worked around this by planting trees on private land. In only four years, we have managed to plant 20,000 native trees!

In 2021, we began to work with blockchain technologies and Web3. We felt like these were the missing pieces we needed to build a solid structure and monitor the work we do. Our main focuses are permaculture design, using the fire barrier technique, food forest development, and syntropic agriculture. In the beginning of 2022, we created the nonprofit organization Earthcare. Several other partnerships began to flourish as well, including Kodadot, RMRK, Treedefi, Koenig Basis and Shokunin Network. In June 2022, we were nominated as a finalist for the 2nd Annual NYC.NFT awards for the category of Best Environmental Initiative from an NFT Project.

by RMTerra

TRANSPARENCY IS KEY AT RMTERRA At RMTerra, we value creating healthy ecosystems over getting recognition and financial support for how many trees we plant. We have seen several examples of reforestation projects that prioritize profit over the well-being of the forests. Monocultures are way faster in neutralizing carbon credits, but they make forests much more vulnerable to fires and diseases and create a hostile environment for other organisms to thrive in, to name just a couple problems with the design. This creates so-called “green deserts’’, because these ecosystems are perceived to provide few benefits to the conservation of plant and animal species. Critics often point out that “plantations are not forests.” ‘Planted forests’, which are “composed of trees established through planting and/or through deliberate seeding of native or introduced species’’, rarely manage to fully replicate the rich ecosystems of natural forests (forestsnews.cifor.org).

94

RMTerra applies principles that prioritize the health and fertility of the forests. These principles are based on four pillars: 1. Constructing firebreaks to protect trees from forest fires, maintain the ecology of the forest and reduce the impact of wildfires on air pollution and the global climate; 2. Introducing ancient and native trees to regenerate the soil and rebuild ancient landscapes; 3. Planting fruit trees to feed other species and ensure land profitability for the owners; 4. Monitoring the forests through NFTrees, which are created in blockchain. Each of the trees that we plant is individually tracked. We record the tree’s age, species, location and the planting date. Building biodiversity in forests helps flora and fauna to flourish, regenerates the landscapes, accelerates the process of pollination, protects the soil, feeds organisms, promotes local trade, prevents flooding, reduces pollution and extreme temperatures, and much more.

TOKENIZING TREES

RMTERRA’S FUTURE GOALS

I am amazed how the evolution of the internet has opened up possibilities for us to co-create towards a more sustainable future. Blockchain technology plays a huge role in our project (as it is disruptive and decentralized), provides increased transparency and, on top of that, is open source.

We are eager to keep working on this mission, as Mother Earth is our home—and is at risk.

In spite of RMTerra being at a fairly early stage, we are committed to transparency as a key tenet of our business model and aim to inspire confidence in every party involved in our work. We aspire to create a win-win structure where everyone can harvest and enjoy the fruits of our labor, both literally and figuratively. “Forests represented as NFTs present many opportunities. Landowners can share the benefits and burdens of forest ownership with the internet community. People on the internet who do not own land can help with planting and maintaining trees. Real tree owners can pick real fruits, and virtual tree owners can pick virtual fruits.” - RMRK

As we all share this home, we aspire to involve as many “family members” as possible, building bridges and co-creating a better world. Our future goals include: • Strategically planting as many trees as possible. • Tokenizing other environmental elements, not just trees, in order to encourage biodiversity, such as bird houses, vermicomposters and bee hives. • Organizing educational events and workshops on sustainability and technology. • Becoming a DAO. • Forming an ambassador program. If you share our love and concern for Mother Nature and want to get involved, please contact us. Let’s build a brighter future together! More info: linktr.ee/rmterra

Awe is defined by two features: vastness (experiencing something larger than yourself or beyond your ordinary experience) and accomodation (a reorganisation of your ways of thinking to adjust to the new experience) (Keltner & Haiklt, 2003). Awe is an information-rich experience that pulls your attention outside yourself toward something greater than your individual experience and expands your frame of reference (Shiots, Keltnerm, Mossman, 2007). I never imagined that, one day, I would be devoted to worms. But oh, the wonder and gratitude that arises in me with the way they move, the way they entangle themselves with one another, the way they turn death into life… it truly blows my mind!

Since that year—which was a whole seven years ago now—I guess you could say I have been on a journey of becoming an Earth Lover, a SoilMate. Nature has taken me to the depths of what it means to be an ‘environmentalist’, and, yet, this journey has been— and is—a love story for me.

The first time I ever consciously interacted with a worm was during my first “WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) experience in the Highlands of Scotland. I remember weeding a polytunnel one day when I almost struck my trowel in a wriggly one. I jumped, but, as I did, I realised that it was more because of my fear of being attacked or hurt by the worm. Crazy, I know. I have to admit that I am slightly embarrassed at confessing that that was the moment when I realised I was scared of worms. As a result, I was unconsciously avoiding every possible encounter with them.

Indeed, working predominantly with gardening and food systems for many years now, I have arrived at two conclusions:

Always curious about the root of my fears, I reflected—why am I afraid? Simply put, this was the beginning of the Great Unravelling for me.

While having an intellectual understanding of the multiple converging crises we are facing is truly a great start, it is not enough. The deep change required to transform our social systems—particularly food systems, land and soil

1.

The changes that are needed to restore the soil and transform our food systems are very complex in many ways. 2. It is both an inner and an outer job—to both uncover or deepen the love and care for the Earth that are so needed, and to understand our individual roles in this Great Transition.

health—will be born from reclaiming our innate interconnectedness with all of life. I am sure of this. As D.H Lawrence states: “Oh, what a catastrophe, what a maiming of love when it was made personal, merely personal feeling. This is what is the matter with us: we are bleeding at the roots because we are cut off from the earth and sun and stars. Love has become a grinning mockery because, poor blossom, we plucked it from its stem on the Tree of Life and expected it to keep on blooming in our civilized vase on the table.” – D.H. Lawrence

In my journey engaging in different areas of the food system, working on a family farm in the Highlands and on a billionaire-owned farm in London, participating in gardening and compost projects for schools in South Africa and in a permaculture paradise in Serbia—and saving crab apple seeds for Ireland’s seed saving charity—I have come to a deep understanding. The most ‘sustainable’ way we can restore Nature is through ‘rewilding’ and healing ourselves from the disconnect and conditioning that many of us (especially in the Western world) experience, particularly with the food systems we are surrounded by. With this, we can really understand current environmental issues in a deeper, more holistic and complex manner. From this awareness, the solutions become clearer.

I am an advocate of the notion that food is at the center of healthy cultures. We, as humans (at least most of us!), spend a considerable amount of time every day preparing and eating the food we eat. Yet, most people in the Western world spend very little time growing, composting, harvesting food, or saving seed. This means that the regenerative cycle is largely “out of sight, out of mind”, which I feel is a main factor in the disconnect from our food systems and the Soil Food Web. Our relationship to food has a strong regenerative or degenerative contribution not only to the soil and habitats, but to the climate, too. As humans, we eat from the soil (or, at least, should do!), and so all of life is highly dependent on the health of our soils—including us. Many alternative and holistic systems of growing food and restoring the soil, such as biodynamic farming, regenerative agriculture, syntropic farming, agroforestry, holistic grazing and permaculture, to name a few, offer solutions to working with nature instead of against it. Through my own journey, I have experienced profoundly connected states with Nature which have been followed by waves of enormous grief over the destruction of our ecosystems. I realized that, in my own small way, one of the biggest impacts I can make is through my relationship with the food systems around me. Having grown up in the countryside, I have witnessed first hand how degrading our widespread farming practices are and spent considerable time contemplating how we can evolve from being a species in survival to a species that can thrive in symbiosis with 100% of life.

Our intention is to provide a space in which members can practice love in action, or ‘Active Hope’ —as the late Mary Oliver would say. Considering that we have so many of the major tools that are needed to regenerate our soils and food systems, I believe the challenge of our time is to understand the value in doing so. In the felt sense of our connection with our planet and all the creatures around and beneath us, we can create a new narrative that tells the story of how humans fell—and rose—together, in love with, and as Nature.

I strongly believe in the power of collaboration and regenerative networks in bringing people and projects together, which is where the seed for my newest project SoilMates Network (SMN) sprung from. The mission of SMN (and its host co:do) is to provide innovative tools for changemakers to

REGENERATIVE ARCHITECTURE AND BIOENERGETIC DESIGN When Structures Are Designed from the Intrinsic Energetic Aspects of Nature

103

by BioArc

I

first found myself using the term “bioarc” around eight years ago, with the intention of formulating a regenerative, symbiotic system for architecture design, around the practice of bio-architecture. The next quote speaks to this proposal and describes its essential process and ideation. “When structures are designed from the realisation of the intrinsic energetic aspects that exist throughout all of nature, we naturally re-enter a regenerative and symbiotic relationship with our environment. This is the ultimate purpose of bioarchitecture.” BioArc is about more than just eco-architecture, but this provides us with a good place to start. Eco-architecture primarily focuses on reducing the environmental impact of architectural development, minimising the ecological footprint of structures and utilizing eco-materials. It also includes the application of true cost economics: observing and analysing the entire process of

104

obtaining and using a particular material in order to determine the difference between the market price of a commodity and the total societal cost of that commodity (such as how it may affect the environment or public health). Focusing on true cost economics means embracing the reusing of materials by incorporating them into other products and build materials. We strive towards eliminating waste by recycling or upcycling materials in the process of constructing buildings. These approaches are absolutely necessary if we are to create a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly future for ourselves and future generations. We are here to coexist in a harmonious and biophilic partnership with nature. At BioArc, when we refer to regenerative architecture, we view regeneration in the same way we would talk about the regeneration of the human body or any other biological form. We take inspiration from the many energetic processes that occur when life is forming and the fact that living beings are in a perpetual state of regeneration.

BY JUAN SCHLOSSER

by BioArc

We find it revealing to notice how we regenerate and heal when we are in a state of disease or when damage has been done to the physical body. In our architecture, we choose our materials and form our designs using these principles as guidelines, in order to mimic the bio-energetic and bio-electrical processes of nature. We aim to create a model of regenerative architecture that will not just affect the surrounding environment, but also the inhabitants of these structures and spaces. But how do we impact the inhabitants, and how can a structure made out of these materials possibly mimic natural processes? There are different levels of biomimicry that we utilize in the creation of the architecture. It is an art form, and there are many design principles in play. However, a fundamental concept we pay attention to is the Schumann resonance. By describing this energetic frequency, I hope to give you a better understanding of how a building can mimic a tree. It is one way that nature can be replicated in architecture.

EARTH FREQUENCY The Schumann resonance, otherwise known as the earth frequency harmonic cascade, is a set of extremely low frequencies (ELF) in Earth’s electromagnetic field. Extremely low frequency fields are something we are all familiar with. While ELF fields refer to a range of frequencies from 0-300 Hertz, the main source of extremely low frequencies is alternating current (AC) carried in power lines, electrical wiring and household appliances, which is 60 Hz in North America and 50 Hz in Europe. Any appliance that is plugged into the wall for power will radiate ELF electric and ELF magnetic fields (which are jointly referred to as EMF, or “electromagnetic fields”). The Schumann resonance, on the other hand, is a natural frequency that pulsates at a rate of 7.83 Hz. You could call it Mother Earth’s natural heartbeat rhythm, as it surrounds and protects all living things on the planet. The Schumann frequencies are global electromagnetic phenomena generated by lightning discharges and energetic conditions formed in the cavity between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere. Every lightning burst creates electromagnetic waves that circle the Earth

and are captured between Earth’s surface and about 60 miles up from it. Some of these waves combine—if they have just the right wavelength—and increase in strength, forming a repeating atmospheric heartbeat known as the Schumann resonance. This energy is used by trees and the vast ecosystems to which they are connected. This resonance can be harvested and amplified by buildings and structures by following specific shapes and measurements resonant to these frequencies. When combined with adequate dielectric materials, it can have profound effects on the overall health of plants and animals. The American scientist and professor Philip Callahan has done some work in this field. He describes how trees and forests are a perfect

106

example of this type of dielectric antenna, operating as a low-energy system. They are able to tap into the Schumann Harmonic Cascade, in turn affecting the health of trees or the health of the entire ecosystem altogether. The challenge lies in extending this from forests and trees to our own buildings and bodies. The Schumann frequency is fundamental to our biology. Research has shown that the Schumann resonances interact with brain systems and brain tissue, even altering the serotonin/melatonin balance. Without it, our body’s biological functions, and living beings as a whole, could not operate in harmony and balance. This has led to the popular practice of Earthing (or grounding), which involves maintaining

direct skin contact with the Earth’s surface, such as by walking barefoot or laying on the ground outdoors. This therapeutic technique transfers free electrons from the Earth through the skin and acts as the most powerful antioxidant known, neutralizing free radicals in the body, easing inflammation, and even healing cell and tissue damage. The negative health effects of living without the Schumann resonance have been experienced by astronauts. In order to combat the negative impact of being separated from Earth’s natural frequency, astronauts can use a device called the Schumann frequency generator. This device partially repairs the issues associated with spending long periods of time in space, disconnected from nature.

Capacitor: a device that stores electrical energy in its dielectric component in the presence of an electric field. The field effect of a capacitor is known as capacitance.

Like air, food and water, these frequencies are essential to life, and they help inform our understanding of how to integrate nature and architecture.

Schumann harmonics, we need to understand that a dielectric material acts as a component of a capacitor (also known as a condenser).

We can understand the crucial importance of the earth frequency 7.8 Hz in the DNA formation from the experiments of Luc Montagnier, where DNA is generated in water by using the Schumann resonance.

Capacitance exists in any given situation between two electrical potentials. Interestingly, while the atmosphere is positively charged, the earth has an opposite negative charge. Dielectric materials situated between the atmosphere and the earth, such as a forest or a building, exhibit the same electrical conditions as the dielectric component in a capacitor. They are both capable of storing an electrical charge. Dielectric materials in the environment operate on a much larger scale, and yet it all happens subtly—functioning as a subtle energy system with a low frequency, even within the ELF field.

DIELECTRIC MATERIAL Dielectrics are materials that don’t allow electrical current to flow. They are more often called insulators because they are the exact opposite of conductors. In electromagnetism, when someone calls an insulator a “dielectric,” it is to draw attention to a special property that all insulators share: polarizability. In other words, a dielectric is an electrical insulator that can be polarised by an applied electric field. The role of the material we use in our architecture has many implications for bioenergetic design, but in the context of the

108

A further important concept to understand is that of the dielectric constant. The dielectric constant (also known as relative permittivity) of a substance or material is a measure of its ability to store electrical energy. Mathematically, it is the ratio of a material’s permittivity to the permittivity

BY JUAN SCHLOSSER

by BioArc

of free space. This quantity expresses the extent to which a material can hold electric flux in it. Relative permittivity is the electrical equivalent of relative magnetic permeability, which is the measure of how much magnetization a material obtains in response to an applied magnetic field.

Just as an iron core in a coil increases the magnetic field because it has great magnetic permeability, when the dielectric constant increases, the electric flux density increases in a capacitor. In nature, any given biological growth process that generates a material gives it a specific quality which creates an internal, coherent, fractal structural makeup. Due to this, these materials are able to exhibit very high dielectric constants, meaning they can store a lot of energy. While this term is normally used exclusively in electrical engineering, we can see now how there are profound implications for this in architecture. Many structures, not just capacitors used in electronics, exhibit capacitance, or the ability of a system to store an electric charge. While storing electrical charges is important, there also exists the need for these charges to be directed. A waveguide is a structure that guides waves, such as electromagnetic waves or sound, with minimal loss of energy by restricting the transmission of energy to one direction. Structures such as cones, pyramids and domes can be seen as waveguides, collecting and directing energy.

SHAPE Complex antenna designs like fractal antennas are used in electronics, such as in mobile phone antennas. In this context, we can see how a tree or a building can be seen as a complex dielectric fractal antenna. An important concept to explain here is resonant frequencies. In an electrical system, the resonant frequency is defined as the frequency at which the transfer function reaches its maximum value. Thus for a given input, the maximum output can be obtained. Dielectric resonating properties are seen in electronics, through the action of cavity-like structures made of special ceramics. When waves are confined inside this resonator, they bounce back and forth between the sides. The resonant frequencies of this so-called “dielectric resonator” create standing waves in its internal structure, oscillating with large amplitudes to create the largest possible effect. The same physics here can also be applied to natural structures and buildings.

by BioArc

Many ancient cultures have understood the principles of subtle energy and their relationship to shape or form and how specific shapes can create energy fields. The idea of geometric patterns influencing subtle energy fields is not a new concept. In the context of the modern age, there are myriad examples of human-made antennas covering planet Earth which capitalise on the properties of geometric shapes—using the phenomena of resonance frequencies in order to transfer signals. Philip Callahan suggested that religious structures throughout the ancient world were finely-tuned dielectric antennas which collected energy from the Sun, the Earth and the cosmos and then passed it onto the environment and people around these temple structures.

RECREATE

One such shape that is well known today is the pyramid structure. Many experiments have been carried out demonstrating its effect on the biology around it. One of the most extensive studies was performed by a Russian pyramid researcher, Alexander Golod, who found that the presence of the pyramid energy field had a profound influence on the environment around it. Some of the most important revelations he discovered were: the improved regeneration of tissue, increased agricultural yields, improvements in the immune systems of biological organisms, and the mitigation of radioactivity. Furthermore, physicists have observed significant changes in superconductivity temperature thresholds. It is not an unreasonable extrapolation to conclude that these effects are

112

not exclusive to the pyramid energy but are the characteristic energetic effects of the shape, geometry and proportion of structures—the energetic expression of all-natural design. Through the use of these precepts, we are able to enhance the lives of plants, animals and the surrounding environments at large. Once we realize that geometric shapes, temple structures, trees and even human beings contain capacitive qualities, or the property of being able to collect and hold an electrical charge, we awaken to the fundamental energetic ingredients of the world around us. From there we could begin to theorise that, if a man-made environment is designed with these principles in mind, we would be working in a sort of

Earth.” It can signify two different things. The first definition refers to the method of divination that interprets markings on the ground or the patterns formed by tossed handfuls of soil, rocks, or sand. It has been called “the science of the sand.” In a related fashion, it can also refer to the art of placing or arranging buildings or other sites auspiciously, by working with the Earth’s energies that flow throughout the landscape. We pay attention to this concept when designing our structures.

energetic symbiosis with the natural environment. Furthermore, if this field effect is amplified by combining the power of geometric shapes with the high dielectric properties of these materials, we could formulate a true symbiosis.

GEOMANCY AND TELLURIC ENERGY However, the architecture will only integrate energetically with its surrounding environment when it accounts for the subtle energies emitting from the Earth’s discrete geomagnetic currents, as well as by paying attention to what the landscape teaches us. For this, there are two more terms that are important to consider: geomancy and telluric energy. Geomancy literally means “Divining the

The second term, telluric energy, refers to the energy contained in a telluric current. A telluric current (from Latin tellūs, “earth”), or Earth current, is an electric current which moves underground or through the sea. Telluric currents result from both natural causes and human activity, and the discrete currents interact in a complex pattern. They are extremely low frequency (ELF) and travel over large areas on or near the surface of the Earth, generally following a direction parallel to the Earth’s surface. Telluric currents arise from charges moving to attain equilibrium between regions of differing electric potentials; these differences in potential are set up by several conditions, including very lowfrequency electromagnetic waves from space, and moving charged masses in the ionosphere and the atmosphere. There are so-called power spots on the planet that are created by underwater streams when they cross at specific angles, causing damped oscillations and forming vortexes. Through the specialised discipline of geobiology and geophysics, the mapping and analysis of these energies can be carried out. Telluric currents are often used by geophysicists to map subsurface structures, such as sedimentary basins, layered rocks, and faults.

AGNIHOTRA FIRE CEREMONY If we are going to explore the subtle energies that flow through water, let’s also explore the subtle energetic effects of fire. One of the most powerful and concrete examples of this technology in action is the Agnihotra Fire Ceremony. Agnihotra, a purifying Vedic fire ceremony, is one of the most powerful practices you can do to heal your environment and support everyone who lives in it. This tradition is practiced in many parts of South Asia, but primarily in India and Nepal. From the ancient science of Ayurveda, it is a practice that is performed at sunrise and sunset every day, in order to purify the atmosphere. The healing, sacrificial fire is prepared in a small copper pyramid of particular size and shape. Brown rice, dried cow dung (manure) and ghee (clarified unsalted butter) are all burned in the manner as described by the Vedas,

114

the oldest scriptures of Hinduism. Sanskrit mantras are chanted, differing between the morning and evening rituals. This process can produce profound effects in the surrounding environment for about a 500-meter radius from where the ceremony is performed. It has been shown to accelerate the growth and fruitfulness of trees and plants in its vicinity, in addition to purifying the atmosphere of pollutants and neutralizing harmful radiation and pathogenic bacteria. Furthermore, thousands of people around the world have experienced that Agnihotra reduces stress, leads to greater clarity and energy, and improves overall health. The Agnihotra Fire Ceremony is a very potent example of the regenerative effects of subtle energy. Agnihotra is the most basic component of Homa Therapy, which is the process of removing toxic conditions from the atmosphere through the

BY JUAN SCHLOSSER

agency of fire. While the Agnihotra is obviously a ritual with spiritual roots, there is science behind it as well. The scientific case for Homa Therapy and its core practices have been carefully collected and documented by the Homa Therapy International Network. The central tenet of Homa Therapy is that you heal the atmosphere, and then the healed atmosphere heals you. But how does it heal? Let’s think back to the elements that constituted this ritual fire. It was not a random assortment of elements—the Agnihotra fire is specially prepared.

It is full of intention and attention. It pays attention to the biorhythms of the Earth, utilizing the energy produced by the phase conjugation of Earth and Sun’s energy fields, which occurs twice daily at the precise moment of the sunrise and sunset. It catalyzes intention by burning specific organic substances, in a particular order, with certain mantras repeated, varying depending on the time of day. And where is the fire burned? In a very particular type of pyramid. Let’s go back to the pyramid structure, and maybe through thinking more deeply about the pyramid as an intentional structure, we can better understand the mysteries of harvesting subtle energy in the environment.

by BioArc

115

RECREATE

The Agnihotra pyramid is made of a very intentional material. In a 2007 study, the composition of the pyramid was found to have an impact on the mineral makeup of the soil surrounding it. Ash that was created in iron pyramids was found to contain significantly less phosphorus than ones made of copper. Phosphorus is important because it is present in plant and animal cells and is vital to all plants for harvesting the Sun’s energy and converting it into growth and reproduction. Without phosphorus, photosynthesis could not occur. Phosphorus is also the second most abundant mineral in the human body, making up 1% of a person’s total body weight. It may seem random that copper pyramids are recommended for the daily ceremony, but when you dive into the intentionality behind this ancient Vedic technology, you see that everything has a purpose. Fire pyramids made of iron, steel, ceramic or glass do not have the same regenerative effects. While the material composition of the pyramid is paramount, so are the dimensions, structure and geometry of the pyramid. The energy of the pyramid shape alone can have regenerative effects. One of the most important aspects of the Agnihotra ceremony is that the pyramid has exactly the same angles and dimensions (proportions) as the pyramid of Giza. To understand this, let’s go back to the idea of capacitive charge, or the ability of a component or circuit to collect and store energy in the form of an electrical charge. Capacitors are energy-storing devices available in many sizes and shapes, and the pyramid structure is an ancient capacitor with ethereal qualities and almost-magical capabilities.

116

by BioArc

When a capacitive charge is added to a pyramid structure, it creates a much stronger field, capable of influencing vast distances of space. Not only can a pyramid hold electrical charge, it also acts as a waveguide, directing electromagnetic waves and sound, with minimal loss of energy, by restricting the transmission of energy. The pyramids of Egypt were ancient power plants. Scientists from ITMO University in Saint Petersburg, Russia, have discovered that the Great Pyramid of Giza can collect and concentrate electromagnetic energy in its chambers and at its base. If we are to

BY JUAN SCHLOSSER

think about the pyramids of Egypt really as just giant batteries, we can think about the Agnihotra pyramid as just a smaller one. Even though it is considerably smaller in size, tremendous amounts of energy are gathered around the copper pyramid during Agnihotra time, creating a magnetic field. In fact, if the pyramid’s ability to concentrate energy can be recreated on a nanoscale size, researchers say that the same science could be used to create more efficient sensors and solar cells. The Agnihotra Fire Ceremony and Homa Therapy in general provide us with a lot of meaningful insight

into the art of harnessing subtle energies from the environment. This daily practice can be seen as holding the keys to a better understanding of regenerative technologies and design, and how these field effects can be used and replicated in architecture.

to produce an electrostatic spark. The Kelvin generator uses falling water to generate voltage differences by electrostatic induction occurring between interconnected, oppositely charged systems. This eventually leads to an electric arc discharging in the form of a spark. Just like the Agnihotra pyramid, it utilizes copper, because copper is an excellent conductor with a low resistance. It has been postulated that the pyramids of Egypt could have acted as a monumental Kelvin generator, using the flow of water from the Nile River as a source of energy. WATCH BIOARC’S VIDEOS

The pyramid structure and the Kelvin generator both have conductive properties, but they have capacitive qualities as well, which is to say they contain the ability to store electrical energy. Remember, the

THE COSMIC TEMPLE We have now been exposed to many ways in which architecture can be regenerative. Regenerative architecture is being remembered and rediscovered, and even reinvented, reflecting the developments of our time. Regardless of where this reemerging field takes us, its principles will be based on the sacred sciences that the ancients grasped, understood and revealed to us. by BioArc

I will leave you with an excerpt from the book The Dimensions of Paradise by John Michell: higher the dielectric constant, the greater the ability of a material to hold or concentrate electric flux. As a large-scale Kelvin generator, the pyramids of Egypt were able to generate a high dielectric constant, with the channeled energy being resonated and amplified in the multiple chambers of the pyramid. It is thought that the many shafts and corridors of the pyramids were conduits, used to channel the water coming from the Nile. They also acted as waveguides, transferring the Ionic charge into the chambers, with the chambers themselves acting as dielectric resonators, amplifying the energy and condensing it. There are analogous experiments on a smaller scale that can demonstrate a similar concept. Using two small water jets, metallic rigs, vessels and spherical capacitors—configured in a particular manner—

“There are two forms of natural energy involved, one terrestrial, and the other from the atmosphere. Through the ritual fusion of these two elements, a spirit was generated and spread like an enchantment from the temple, bearing fertility to the surrounding countryside and pervading it with an atmosphere of peace and happiness... in terms of spiritual technology, (it) may have involved the fertilising of the Earth’s spirit by positively charged energy channelled through the lightning rods from the temple roof. The Old Testament chroniclers tell of life-giving streams that rose beneath the temple and flowed toward the four corners of the Earth...”

A Journey to Unveil the Stories We Are Made of Welcome to the MythOS climate of The Weave. A place where we brew tea while sharing stories of the past and stories of the future around a fire. A place where we unveil the mysteries of our species and put into words what we are and what we want to be. Terence Mckenna used to say that we can only evolve as fast as our language does. Hopefully, this space will be a journey that will allow us to understand more and better—and evolve faster as a result.

Our mythmaker guest of this issue starts his absolutely visionary book “Building the Cathedral” (you can read a fragment of it in a few pages) with a quote from the one and only Joseph Campbell that talks about how we can analyze a society by realizing what the tallest buildings in the horizon are dedicated to. We went from pyramids to cathedrals—to corporate buildings. Graham Dempsey argues in his book that we have lost the sense of meaning brought by myth and origin stories to our societies since time immemorial. He then explains how to rebuild our world through the power of story by creating new myths that can serve as guiding beacons of hope.

We call this map about how to build the new regenerative future… our MythOS: an Operating System of Myths, which is what we will explore in depth in this new climate of The Weave. Throughout history, our shared stories, our myths, our origin tales of creation, our rites of passage and our imagination have determined how we have behaved and constructed our shared social agreements. What is accepted as normal has evolved as fast as our intellect and language. It has, hence, transformed, creating new social agreements and behaviors.

We are currently in a liminal age of transition between two eras, two ways of being. As in all liminal states, this time is intrinsically filled with opportunities to redefine and rethink. Whether we realize it or not, we are birthing a new civilization that will forever transform our purpose and our path. This enormous task requires new stories of how we can behave, organize our societies, and relate to nature and each other. We are in need of a new MythOS to reimagine what is possible. We are in need of new libraries of Alexandria, new Agoras, new spaces to craft a better narrative of who we are and who we want to be.

Our goal is to give you a glimpse into all the exciting things that are emerging in this universe. All the stories. All the efforts being put towards creating a comprehensive archive of songs, tales, new words, poems, and joyful celebrations of life. I hope that, in this process, we are able to transform our tallest buildings… into temples of knowledge, again.

LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE YOU CHANGE THE WORLD Mythmaking at the Crossroads of Yesterday and Tomorrow

I

n Roman mythology, the god Janus was a spirit of doorways, of thresholds, of portals. He marked that transitional zone, the socalled “liminal” space between realms. Fitting his ambivalent and contradictory nature, Janus was depicted with two faces, each one oriented in opposite directions: one looking back, the other forward. A “Janus word” is one that means something and its opposite at the same time. “Oversight” is both attentive supervision—and an inattentive lapse of it. To “peruse” something means to study it carefully—and to breeze through it carelessly. Like Janus, such words look in opposite directions at the same time. “Myth”, I would argue, is itself something of a Janus word, since it commonly means “a false story”—and a story that is true at the deepest, most profound level. So we refer to the “myth of endless growth” even as we talk about the “mythic” and thus archetypal truth of the hero’s journey or the stories of Buddha, Christ, and Krishna. In this deeper sense, we recognize that myths are the stories that ground us, that offer us meaningful orientation in a world otherwise

MYTHOS

full of falsity and confusion. Myths are what guide our souls and our world at the crossroads. But if this is true, what myths are we living by today? What stories orient us, and where are they leading?

We live today in our own transition zone, our own liminal moment. Yesterday’s myths are no longer serving us. In some cases, they are actually pushing us headlong towards our own destruction. If we are to see a flourishing future, we need new myths to guide, inspire, and sustain us.

A quick glance at the world today reveals what sorts of myths currently hold us in thrall. Myths of money. Myths of power. Myths of consumption, comfort, and convenience. Our heroes are the Billionaire, the Celebrity, the Politician. Our epic task is one of ever-increasing accumulation and distraction. The promised land we aim for is the endless holiday of the all-inclusive, a perpetual DisneyLand—retirement.

But while we can look to the past as we seek inspiration for the kinds of enduring truths of ancient myth, we must, like Janus, also look forward to the future—for that is where the myths we tell must live. Here, at the nexus of old and new, before and to come, lies the burning urgency of the present moment. And that is where the poets of the new myths exist—those who dare to imagine new ways and new worlds.

With myths like these, is it any wonder the world is in the state it is? We are the stories we tell.

Changing the future means changing the narrative. It means envisioning possible new paths, new ways to be, new models and ideals for human care and concern. We can critique and “deconstruct” the flaws and systemic failures of the current world all we want—and we should—but in the end, we must create something new. We must reconstruct reality.

So, why not tell different stories? The idea sounds almost childishly simple on its face: surely people don’t just invent new myths! That’s a job for… Well, for whom? Advertisers? Politicians? The entertainment industry? Like it or not, those are the voices shaping our collective mythology at present. And they will continue to do so, unchecked and unchallenged, until others start telling theirs—better stories, truer myths.

126

To do that means changing the way we see things, at the collective level. If myths are the collective stories we tell ourselves to make sense of existence and orient our actions within it, then we need compelling, exciting myths of mutual flourishing, hope and regeneration to supplant our current myths of domination, despair, and short-sighted gain.

Our heroes are the Billionaire, the Celebrity, the Politician. Our epic task is one of ever-increasing accumulation and distraction. [...] With myths like these, is it any wonder the world is in the state it is? We are the stories we tell. While few people (if any) are in the position to wield the levers of power or shift the direction of the world’s systems, there is something that we can all do: Tell stories. Saving the world is an act of imagination and will as much as anything else. Offering people a new way to look at things through narratives can make the difference between self-destruction and self-transcendence. Mythologizing is more than resistance, more than revolution; it is regeneration. It is the painting of the future we seek before it arrives—so we know how to get there.

Where it ends up will be largely determined by how narrow or vast our visible horizons are. So we have no choice but to be bold visionaries, aspirational myth-makers, designers of stories and heroes and worlds for future civilizations. Create! Imagine! Weave new yarns into the fabric of reality. Through new myths, we change the world from the inside out. Ancient mythology continues to shape our world, from “Janus words” to January—a time of new beginnings, a new cycle, a fresh start. The time is ripe for a new world of stories.

We live in a liminal moment. We stand at the threshold of a new world. What it looks like will be shaped by the lenses we have to see it through.

BUILDING THE CATHEDRAL (FRAGMENT) Answering the Meaning Crisis through Personal Myth Here is a fragment of Building the Cathedral, one of the most important texts written this decade that sets the foundation for a metamodern era of regenerated Myth. Find the complete text here.

A NEW COSMOS Human beings have never stopped asking the perennial questions: Where did we come from? What are we made of? What is the shape and makeup of the universe? Such questions fill us with wonder, while their answers provide us a crucial sense of orientation. These types of questions once found answers through myth. Today, we get them through science. Science has revealed to us the amazing grandeur of the skies and the unfathomable depths of the atom. It has told us our origins, and has provided an awesome map of our place in existence. Such things truly are the stuff of the tremendous and fascinating Ultimate Mystery.

129

MYTHOS

Campbell writes: “Not the neolithic peasant looking skyward with his hoe, not the old Sumerian priesthood watching planetary courses from the galleries of ziggurats, nor the modern clergyman quoting from a revised version of their book, but our own incredibly wonderful scientists today are the ones to teach us how to see: and if wonder and humility are the best vehicles to bear the soul to its hearth, I should think that a quiet Sunday morning spent at home in controlled meditation on a picture book of the galaxies might be an auspicious start for a voyage”. Unfortunately, the incredible glories of our world revealed by science have not yet been meaningfully integrated into the collective psyche. Indeed, for many people, the new vision of the universe is mainly that of a vast, careless void, which came into being by chance and goes onward without reason or purpose to direct it. They feel today more or less as Blaise Pascal did when the implications of the new scientific discoveries were just beginning to sink in: “When I consider the short duration of my life, swallowed up in an eternity before and after, the little space I fill engulfed in the infinite immensity of spaces whereof I know nothing, and which know nothing of me, I am terrified. The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me”.

130

Experienced in this way, the universe is only terrible, and life within it, but “a tale / Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, / Signifying nothing.” It is, in short, meaningless. This does not need to be the case. The reason for this unfortunate prevalence of despair stems from the fact that our new understanding of the universe has not been meaningfully integrated into our collective consciousness. That is to say, it has not yet been rendered mythologically. Science is a powerful method for understanding objective reality. Indeed, it is by far the most powerful tool ever devised by mankind for this end. What it is not good at is communicating that reality in ways that speak to our subjective experience, that render those truths into something emotionally and psychologically significant. This is what myth does. Psychologically, humans crave story. We connect with narrative structures, with clear meanings and morals, and the beauty of a compelling tale well-told. This is why, for millennia, people turned to their mythic stories for satisfying answers to life’s profound questions. Science, by contrast, is not interested in such things. It dwells in questions, not answers, and its focus is objective fact, without regard for how

BY BRENDAN GRAHAM DEMPSEY

A resacralized universe is one to be revered, not raped for raw materials. these facts are emotionally or psychologically integrated into a subjective psyche. The result is that, today, we have a great many facts about the universe but no meaningful story of it. As yet, our new model of the cosmos has not found any definitive expression in the mythic modality. So long as this is the case, people will continue to experience the universe as meaningless. Because such a perspective is psychologically so taxing and emotionally unfulfilling, it is understandable why many continue to hold on to entirely outmoded mythic systems. A world made in six days, talking snakes, a boat holding all the world’s animals. These are symbolically-

rich myths; but, at the level of explanation for objective realities, are no more than fairytales. Still, even intelligent people will maintain them as literal truths if it means avoiding the only alternative: a set of facts detailing a bleak, careless universe, undirected, stretching shudderingly into a yawning infinity. A silly myth is better than a convincing chaos. Clearly, what is desperately needed today is an account of the universe that is both in accord with our scientific understanding of it and also psychologically fulfilling. That is, we need a new mythological rendering of the cosmos, one that is right both objectively and subjectively. As ever, this is the task for poets and artists, not scientists, for it must speak to the heart, not just the head. It must be beautiful, not simply correct. As such, it is the endeavor of personal mythmaking—one of finding a new, mythic language for creation.

131

MYTHOS

Fortunately, the subject matter doesn’t disappoint. Its majesty and sublime scale beg to be rendered mythically. In the heavens, sprawling purple clouds that span for eons give birth to stars. Their vast explosions sow the cosmos with elemental seeds. Life emerges in the depths. Epochs of magic metamorphosis change fish to birds. A mystical code in every cell unfolds its intricate design. Consciousness emerges from the dark—to learn, to love, to create. Here, the task is not so much the crafting of new symbols, since the subject matter is physical and not metaphysical, immanent reality and not transcendent archetypes. What we need, rather, is a new narrative, a new Genesis. A shared

mythic telling that relates the physical processes as sacred history. Our culture lacks a creation myth about the Ultimate Mystery. We do not lack a Story, only its proper telling. We do not lack a great cosmological myth—only mythmakers. For those who take up the call of creative mythology, an epic awaits to be told. Ironically, it is far grander and more sublime than we could ever have imagined. Science has revealed to us a universe of incomprehensible glory and splendor. It falls to us to lift this from the dry prose of textbooks into the solemn grandeur of poetic myth. Our greatest story has yet to be told. To do so is not just the most auspicious task for artists of any generation. It is also a service to humanity—to call people back to inhabit their world as it is. To help them feel at home in

the universe again. And so, to return a sense of meaning to existence, sacralizing the heavens once more and returning to Earth its proper sense of sacredness. Doing so would free people at last to leave behind their childish creation tales for something both grander and truer. More than that, it would dissipate the lies allowing so many to desecrate and destroy the Earth. A resacralized universe is one to be revered, not raped for raw materials. A New Myth is possible—one with new heavens and a new Earth, pervaded by the glory of the mysterium tremendum et fascinans. In this way, through personal myth, the cosmological function of myth could be fulfilled: to present a total image of the universe through which the ultimate mystery manifests. We only await the poets to come who will commit themselves to the task. The personal mythmaker is called, ultimately, to communicate the universe and transform the world—a much broader and bigger calling than has hitherto been imaged for such work. But so it is. Personal mythmaking is the key to bringing meaning back into the world. It begins with the individual, but very quickly expands, for those who feel so called, into the social realm—to articulate new, living mythic symbols and even a meaningful vision of the cosmos.

THE REGENAISSANCE: A METAMODERN PLAYBOOK This issue is filled with juicy things. The metamodern playbook is, in our humble opinion, one of the greatest texts ever written and one fundamental pillar of the regenerative Renaissance, or as we call it: The Regenaissance. The manual above is based on a fundamental premise, posed long ago by Emma Goldman in a succinct and poignant quote: “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to join your revolution”. The group of visionary (r)evolutionaries wrote this as a practical guide to making the revolution irresistible by adding a fundamental component: play. It is only by bringing back the rites and the festivities of ancient civilizations that we will create the social bonds and collective experiences necessary to build the new world we imagine. We will center our climate in the next issue around this, so you have until then to read the text linked above in detail. – Nicolás Alcalá

hey say an image is worth a thousand words. Our Cosmos ecosystem could not be (almost) complete if we didn’t offer you a glimpse into the future. Solarpunk... Hopepunk... Speculative Futures abound in this new Regenaissance. After decades of depressing cyberpunk visions and black mirrors, it seems the tides have shifted, and here comes a fleet of flying, solar-powered sailboats traversing the clouds and spreading seeds over fields. These new visions fill up cities with greenery and design buildings with biophilic and biomimetic, rounded, sensual shapes that privilege encounters in community, proclaiming a green and nourishing future. Each new issue of The Weave will feature some of our favorite Solarpunk and Hopepunk images. Long live The Regenaissance!

REGENAISSANCE (noun) - A portmanteau word (also called blend) designating the Regenerative Renaissance: a period of transition in which many decades of subtractive and unequal ecosystems have produced an emergence of new approaches, ideas, solutions and connections, leading to a new cultural explosion of art, science, and literature. This can only be compared to huge cultural and social shifts that happened in the past, like the Renaissance or the golden era of classical Greece. This new movement is advocating for a world that works for 100% of life. (Design Science Studio) RESET GENERATION - A new generation of changemakers that stop supporting what we already know is not working, reset our actions and align them with our hearts’ wisdom, and go towards the world we have all imagined is possible. (Stop Reset Go) HUMANITY’S PHASE SHIFT - A phase shift is defined by core axioms and core foundations of most of our macro-global systems—from our worldview, to our economics, to our governance, to our infrastructure, going through foundational shifts. Humanity’s Phase Shift is a next step in the evolution of these systems. Now we are on the brink of something that requires a larger, more fundamental, axiomatic, and structural shift. (Daniel Schmachtenberger) REGENERATIVE ECOSYSTEM - On the network level, it refers to ecosystems of people who are carrying out the regenerative movement by bringing about and engaging in regenerative projects and platforms that facilitate the thriving of humanity in symbiosis with the restoration of nature. On a grassroots level, the term refers to ecosystems that restore, renew or revitalize their own sources of energy, materials and information to help us, and our planet, to thrive. Regenerative products are not only recycled and recyclable, but improve the environmental conditions of where they were made and used, and throughout their life cycle.
