A Tale of Two Friends and Two Funds
The power of alumni networking and a shared desire to give back. This is the story of Michael Chang ’92 and Alvin Hung ’93. Both Michael and Alvin attended Webb in the early 1990s. Both founded and led companies based in Silicon Valley involving video technology. Michael, like Alvin, now lives in Hong Kong and operates businesses in the U.S. and abroad. In 2012, Michael and his wife, Alicia, created a scholarship fund to support deserving Webb students. In 2021, Alvin and his wife, Jacinta, also created a scholarship fund inspired by the experience of the Changs. This story is one of many. It is a story of friendship, of professional success, of maintaining connections and of living Webb’s values.
The Alvin ’93 and Jacinta Hung Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to students and their families to provide access to a Webb education. Endowed funds such as this are invested alongside other endowed funds that provide resources for faculty support, physical plant excellence, academic programs, and the Alf Museum to name a few.
Investments are managed by Goldman Sachs & Co. and the Board of Trustees regularly reviews investment research, strategy, management, and performance. Annual payout is a fixed percentage of the fund’s market value over a twelve-quarter rolling average. Endowed funds like the Hung Scholarship are meant to be perpetual and can be increased over time through future philanthropy.
