From the moment that Emily and Perry announced their engagement, there was such an excitement in our family. Emily is the first of our daughters to marry and the planning of her dream wedding was so exciting and memorable! As her mother, I wanted every detail of the wedding to reflect Emily's “Fairy Tale” come true. Now, as she graces the cover of the Wedded Bliss, it is the perfect finale to her special day. Friends, family and so many others have commented on the beauty of the cover and the inside spread of her special night. Each time I look at the cover it makes my heart smile as the proud mother of my beautiful daughter and bride. Each little girl dreams of their wedding day and Emily knew exactly what she wanted for her special day. During the time we planned the wedding, we couldn't wait to pick up the new copy of the Wedded Bliss to see photographs of brides and their special days. We chose many of our vendors through their advertisements in the magazine as well as pictures of their work. We chose our florist, Fantasy and Fairy Tales, cake designer, Calavera Cakery, music and lighting, CMB Productions, and venue, Villa di Felicita, from the photographs and advertisements in the The Wedded Bliss. We were so pleased with all of them and how they carried out our plan to make Emily's wedding the most unforgettable and perfect day. Sandra and her team were such a blessing to us and they made Emily and I feel so special. We knew we wanted to share our special day with her wedding photos in the magazine. We were even more excited when the cover was available and we had the opportunity for Emily to be the feature bride of the Nov/Dec issue. Sandra worked so professionally and diligently to ensure that the cover was the best it could be and we were thrilled with the finished portraits. Brandi Burkett Photography was the cover photographer, Flawless Artistry and Dollface Makeup Emily’s hair and makeup. Artistry did a beautiful job on Emily The best part of being in The Wedded Bliss is sharing the magazine with family and friends and having it to open over and over again to relive that special day now and for many years to come. Emily has the framed copy of the cover and pages in her new home as an ever present memory of her “dream come true” day. Thanks Wedded Bliss for another great issue!

Boogie Butt Productions has been with The Wedded Bliss and Sandra McNeese since the beginning of the magazine and it's been amazing to watch it go from a small, local publication to the premier wedding magazine of East Texas. We've loved being involved with The Wedded Bliss’ top notch advertising and their Bridal Faires that we have watched grow over the years to become the largest in East Texas. We enjoy working with and recommending other vendors and we appreciate their recommending us as well. The magazine has so many benefits for its advertisers! It’s also wonderful to see many of our Brides over the years being spotlighted in The Wedded Bliss along with the many venues that we work with every day. It's a wonderful community to be involved with. When a new bride comes to us it's nice to have The Wedded Bliss for them to look at and get ideas from and help them create what they want to achieve. We are excited to be spotlighted in this edition and look forward forwa to having the opportunity for you to know a little more about us at Boogie Butt Productions! (Plus, I bet you’re curious to know why I named it that!) We look forward to many more wonderful years with The Wedded Bliss and being there for You and Your special day. We hope to see you soon!

Elmwood Gardens opened in 2001 and was still evolving into what is now called a wedding venue. (At that time we were not sure what exactly we were going to be!) We had a tea house and were hosting dinners, plays, Christmas parties, and so much more. While we were constructing what we call our cutting gardens in front of the main entrance, a lady pulled up in a little car and introduced herself as Sandra McNeese and began telling us about a magazine called The Wedded Bliss. She explained that she was starting the magazine to showcase all of the weddings she envisioned would be taking place in East Texas. We weren’t even sure there were enough people wanting to get married outdoors, let alone at our place. We were not sure we needed advertising. In fact, our idea was to do parties, dinners, family reunions, and of course an occasional wedding. Sandra was quite the sales lady and she was so excited about her plans that you couldn’t help but want to be a part of it. We have now been advertising with her magazine for the last ten years and feel that in all of the advertising we do, her magazine has brought us the most business and the most notoriety. The magazine is so beautifully constructed and the photographs are so professionally displayed that you want to just look over it time and time again. Being one of the oldest venues in the East Texas area we would not hesitate to recommend anyone getting into this business to start your advertising campaign with Sandra and The Wedded Bliss magazine. Sandra we cannot thank you enough for all of your support and your contribution to our success.

ENGAGEMENT STORIES

STORIES THAT TOUCH THE HEART AND INSPIRE

ASHLEY CLARK AND CHASE GRIGGERS

months of hanging out for Chase to realize that they were actually “boyfriend and girlfriend” instead of just neighbors. Apparently they were the only ones who didn’t know they were dating. Someone even commented, “Wow, I wish I had a neighbor who looked at me the way he looks at her!” Ashley and Chase had fallen for each other. They became official (or Facebook official) on December 7, 2010, 6 months after they began hanging out. Ashley found out when she received a message from Facebook asking her to confirm she was in a relationship with Chase. A trip to the Guadalupe River in the summer of 2010 had apparently been the magical place that brought them together. They both say neither of them had planned to fall so hard or so fast. Chase had wanted an intimate proposal with just him and Ashley, on their boat, by themselves. After months of planning, buying a ring and waiting, the proposal happened as planned. He rented a house on Lake Hamilton, near Hot Springs, Arkansas. He worked to include most of their friends (without Ashley’s knowledge), and he called and asked her boss if she could be off work for 5 days. Ashley knew he was going to ask her to marry him, but she didn’t know when it was

going to happen. The night before they left for Lake Hamilton, Chase told Ashley to pack her stuff as they were going on a mini vacation. She thought it was going to be just the two of them, but on their drive to Arkansas, Chase told Ashley that their friends Brett and Lo would be joining them and that he had also asked Mark and Alyssa, and Sheldon and Lacey to come, too! They had an amazing two days. On the third day, while they were out in the boat, Ashley was getting hungry and wanted to go eat at Sam’s Pizza on the water. Unbeknownst to her, the ring was under the seat where she was sitting and in order for Chase to get the ring and propose, Ashley had to get up. So a few minutes later when she got up for pizza, Chase got down on one knee and proposed. He asked Ashley to be his “First Mate” for life. She, of course, said yes! High fives and kisses followed. Chase caught the entire proposal on the Go Pro that was on the boat. Soon after, they went back to the house where a lot of family and friends were waiting for them. For Ashley and Chase, it was the best proposal and weekend ever!

JAN-FEB 2015  THE WEDDED BLISS  |

After both Ashley Clark and Chase Griggers had ended long term relationships with other people, they decided to hang-out together, just as friends. It was, after all, pretty convenient since they lived right next door to each other. At the time, neither Chase nor Ashley were looking for a relationship so they were “just friends.” They were together almost every single day. It only took 6

ASHLEE MILNER AND JASON SCOGGINS

24 Ashlee Milner and Jason Scoggins knew each other for 15 years but they lost touch with each other in 2002 when Ashlee finished junior high school and started high school. For 10 years she wondered what happened to Jason and wondered if he was enjoying his life until the wonderful world of Facebook brought them back together. Two years ago, Jason sent Ashlee a Facebook message and the two began talking and texting and finally agreed upon dinner. It didn’t take them long to realize they wanted to be together. After a year of dating, they traveled to New York City for a short vacation where Ashlee hinted at how romantic it would be if Jason proposed at the top of Rockefeller Center overlooking Central Park. The entire trip Ashlee sat in anticipation wondering if he’d actually taken her hints into consideration but the proposal never came. She says she was a bit disappointed but then a few months later they were in Cancun for a relaxing week away. She was not expecting a proposal especially after the New York City trip. Upon arrival at the hotel they scheduled a day trip to see Chichen Itza,

not knowing the long, hot hours the trip would take from the hotel. On October 7, the couple left their hotel at 7:00 am, spent half the day traveling to the Mayan Ruins and the rest of the day traveling back to the hotel. Chichen Itza was beautiful and all the photographs they took that day look like paintings or digitally enhanced artwork. It was a perfect place for a proposal with elaborate background for pictures and tourist with cameras. But that’s not where Jason proposed either. He DID carry the ring around in his pocket the entire day waiting for the right moment. He finally proposed late that evening when they arrived back at the hotel, had changed out of their sweaty clothes, eaten dinner and then strolled down to the beach to see the lights of Cozumel just across the water. Jason who has a very outgoing personality had decided that an elaborate proposal would have caused a scene at Chichen Itza so instead he waited until they were alone on the beach, under the starry sky with the lights of Cozumel illuminating their way. The way he chose to propose, out of the ordinary from his personality, made the moment much sweeter…

though Ashlee says she felt like she ruined it when the first words out of her mouth were “Did you ask my mother?” instead of “Yes!” This was probably not the reaction he expected! After taking a few moments of realizing what Jason was asking, that he was asking her to marry him, she said “Yes!”

What makes a wedding ceremony so special? It is the magic of all the details coming together, of timing, planning, and anticipation. It is the magic of the event that commemorates the public promise. Maybe a mother dreams about seeing her son waiting at the altar, looking so grown and handsome. Many brides dream about the look in their groom’s eyes as he sees her in her wedding gown for the first time. This kind of magic needs the details – it needs the perfect setting. Imagine a place that embodies everything you love about East Texas. A beautiful, old homestead with charm and character, with multiple gardens and original pioneer homes. Picture the bride being led through a lovely outdoor wedding walk, with flowers on either side of the path, and hanging chandeliers lighting the way to her groom. Think how beautiful it would be to watch them say their vows standing underneath a lovely wroughtiron gazebo. Bradford pear trees surround the ceremonial area, giving the ceremony an intimate, private atmosphere. This would be the perfect setting, the missing piece needed to complete the perfect day. Dee Dee Turnage turned this fantasy into reality to fulfill the dreams of her own son. When he was married in 2001, he and his bride-to-be looked for the perfect venue, and decided that his parent’s family farm was the only suitable place in which to speak their

vows. Their ceremony was so touching and picturesque that Dee Dee decided that she needed to make her farm readily available to other couples. Slowly, she began making changes here and there. She and her husband began to cultivate the homestead’s natural allure into easily identifiable areas, like the wedding walk and gazebo. They converted the

barn into a dance hall, and gave it a little bit of flare by adding a weather vane purchased from a pig farm. They then built a 5,400 square foot reception hall, which has a storeroom and a room specifically for catering preparations. There are four different cottages purchased from surrounding farms: one for both the bride and groom to prepare, one for out of town guests to stay, and one for the newly married couple. The honeymoon cottage has a four-person hot tub and charming vintage décor. It is the perfect respite for a couple to unwind and rest for a night before they set off on their honeymoon. The old family farm has become a full-fledged wedding venue. Elmwood Gardens can accommodate much more than the fairy tale wedding. If you want to add some personality and enjoyment to your corporate function, or find a place to throw a classy, sweet baby shower, Elmwood Gardens can serve you beautifully. Any type of large gathering would reap the full benefits of all that the Gardens can offer. Just imagine how easy it would be to have the next family reunion there. Dee Dee has built a long list of top-class vendors for anything that could be wanted; music, floral arrangements, cakes and sweets, catering, and decorations. There are plans to keep the venue growing. Dee Dee has continued the expansion by further developing the open-aired celebration areas. One of the structures is an indoor-outdoor

Wedding guests can watch the ceremony from homemade benches built from refurbished, antique wood. A copper cross sits at the roof line, sanctifying the chapel and all those within it. Continuing the open-aired celebration area is the outdoor dance hall. It is a saloon-themed area, with vintage hanging lights, perfect for dancing the night away with your family and friends. Dee Dee has also added an outdoor bar next to the dance hall. Everything that could make your wedding the celebration of the year is there, available for you. Dee Dee has worked hard to make Elmwood Gardens the high-class venue that it is today. It has been a project of passion. Elwood Gardens is strongly connected to its surrounding community and has a rich history that lends character and personal ties to an event. Elmwood Gardens is beautiful, fullyserviced, and versatile. It is the perfect place to have the perfect day.

Creating a dream-day wedding is something of an art. There's finding the perfect venue, cake tasting and signature cocktail making, seating arrangements and flower picking. And let's not forget hours spent underneath a bridal salon spotlight trying on wedding gown after wedding gown. Robin Butt of Boogie Butt Productions knows all about what goes into wedding planning, which is why it's his goal to make all the entertainment details come together in the most simple and enjoyable fashion. For over 20 years Robin has created custom entertainment packages for weddings, corporate events, fundraisers, charitable organizations, store openings, local festivals and parties of all types. He and his team handle everything from photographer and videographer to music, lighting and live entertainment. If there is one thing Robin knows best, it's putting together a fabulous event! Boogie Butt Production's story begins with young Robin Butt growing up with an eclectic, musical family in Austin. Big band, world music and classic rock streamed from the radio and Robin's musical influence grew. When the family moved from Austin to East Texas, Robin helped out at the local radio station with “Big Al” on Friday and Saturday nights. Years passed and Robin added various endeavors to his resume, including time spent studying under a chef. Then, a business opportunity came his way. He purchased the Caliente Club's restaurant, but soon found that serving fine steaks didn't mesh with the club's atmosphere. Business was slow, but it provided time for Robin to step up to the mic and act as the club's DJ. When club owner Kenneth Gardner asked Robin to officially assume the DJ duties, he jumped at the chance, shut down the restaurant and committed all his time to music. “Those were tough nights, not much money, but I wouldn't take the world for the experience,” Robin says. “From truck drivers to metropolitan visitors, I had to find a music mix and set a welcoming atmosphere.” People started pouring in from all over to listen to the music until the wee hours of the morning (2 a.m.). As popularity grew, Robin started booking little-known acts who went on to become mega-famous artists, including Neal McCoy, the Charley Pride Band, Percy Sledge, and Little Texas.

During his time at the club, local radio stations began approaching Robin about working for them. He started his own radio show on KYYK 98.3 in Palestine and 96X and 107.3 in Tyler. Robin's big-name artist list grew and he was blessed with the opportunity to work with people like Lynyrd Skynrd and Hank Williams Jr. Robin's love for music extended to his family and the entertainment company he's grown. “The name Boogie Butt came from

CREATING THE PERFECT DREAM-DAY WEDDINGS

when my daughter, Christian used to boogie in her crib every time I'd turn my music on.” Daughters Ashley and Emily also play a part in Boogie Butt Productions. Ashley, at age 14, did DJ work for kids' dances, then local colleges. She now serves as a sergeant in the U.S. Marines. Little Emily (also known as The Divine Miss Em), is 7 years old and helps Mom and Dad with the Card and Party Factory grand openings. Robin notes that she's now asking for her own business cards. Robin's

Robin has two simple tips for couples looking to hire Boogie Butt Productions as their entertainment expert. First, hire the whole package. “Equipment, experience and coordination will be well planned by Boogie Butt Productions. We'll synchronize the whole thing, which is where Uncle Howard or your college buddy with the iPad and some speakers might not work as well.”

Robin suggests giving him your play list and schedule from start to finish. From there, Robin and his team will set up everything from wireless mics and backup systems to bubbles on the dance floor. And there will always be just the right mix of music--tunes to please everyone from Grandpa to groomsmen. “Remember, we're a fully custom entertainment and production company and our five entertainers that have been with us for up to 10 years, trained by us and work specifically for us, want nothing more than to make your special day or event memorable,” says Robin. If you want dramatic lighting, you've got it. A string quartet for a memorable departure, you've got it. A green screen photo booth and karaoke lounge? No problem! ”Don't be afraid to color outside those dreaded lines 'all the others' want you to fall between. Dare to ask and dare to be totally yourself. After all, it's your day and nobody understands that better than us!”

VENDOR INFORMATION Boogie Butt Productions Second, express yourself. Boogie Butt Productions is all about individuality and creating an entertainment package that is as unique as the couple and their wedding day dreams. “If the first thing a DJ does is hand you their time line or coordination schedule and play list, walk away. Our tip is do not be typical and have yourself hemmed into what somebody did at the last wedding.”

wife, Candy, a teacher at the Jacksonville Christian School for the last nine years, now devotes her time to Boogie Butt as well. When asked what his favorite part of the job is, Robin said, “The thing I love the most about my work is the variety of individuals our company has worked with over the years. We've entertained and produced for brides, individuals and corporate events across the region and nationwide.” Boogie Butt can handle everything from lights to production to staging to booking. “When working with our clients, we try to customize rather than present a tired list of options. We work with the couple, the family, the venue and our personnel to create a unique, memorable wedding or event.” That means everything from a 1940's wedding theme with vintage tunes to a Celtic, bagpipe wedding in a castle. “Working with other incredible vendors, we've executed shabby to country chic, an elegant evening and more. You tell us your ideas and we'll help make it happen!”

BREAKFAST GRANOLA

BY CHARLOTTE TAYLOR / PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN LABOYTEAUX

|  THE WEDDED BLISS  JAN-FEB 2015

Sit down. Take a load off by golly. A new year is upon us, so let’s take a breather before it all begins again. Those crazy hectic holidays are over and the frantic last minute wedding details, done. As we savor this fleeting moment, we cannot help but think about what will be on the horizon for the coming year. A new job, spouse or a cross-country move? Will we focus on dieting or exercising more? Or will it be simplifying our life or trying to eat cleaner?

38

Simplifying is always good and it’s something that is constantly on our top ten list. Sometimes that means running the roads less; sometimes it just means eating at home more with less complicated meals. You know, more real food and less junk food. But snacks I tell ya, snacks will be the death of me. We all long for something to nibble on from time to time, but a snack that’s not horrible for you can be the challenge. For some of us, time is truly an issue. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to grocery shop, let alone make a lot of homemade food. If you can sneak in a day here and there to whip up some homemade things, though, I would plead with you to do so. It will not only be worth your time and effort, you will save lots of money and ultimately eat healthier. Segue to granola. Are you a fan of granola? Whipping up a batch is about as difficult as throwing together rice krispy treats. It’s so easy. The most gratifying part of homemade granola is that you know exactly what is in it. There are no surprises. Don’t we wish the New Year could be like that? Making granola yourself gives you total control. Do you have food allergies? Prefer certain nuts or dried fruits? Guess what? You can put in or leave out virtually whatever you want. Homemade granola can also be kept crumbly and used as a topping for yogurt and such, or eaten as cereal. It can also be pressed and cut into bars or rolled into little balls for onthe-go nibbly treats. Whatever you do, if you decide to dive into granola making, do not over think it. It’s a lot easier than you can imagine. Keep a good balance of chunky to sticky and it will turn out great. You basically need a sticky mixture (comparable to the marshmallow mixture in rice krispy treats) to pour over your chunky ingredients (again, this would compare to the

THE MOST GRATIFYING THING ABOUT HOMEMADE GRANOLA IS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT'S IN IT

rice krispy cereal). The sticky mixture can be butter, vegetable oil, peanut butter (or another nut butter), combined with most any sweetener (granulated sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, honey or maple syrup just to name a few). And salt. Heavens to Betsy, do not leave out the salt. There are many combos you can try, the flavors of different recipes do not vary too much, so just use what you have in the cupboard. I’ve taken the glamour out of granola making and turned it into more of a pleasant fair. Just throw all of your scraps in a bowl and voila, granola. Seriously! To prove to you how forgiving granola is, I will be transparent here and say that the first time I made it, we didn’t even have half of the ingredients. We improvised, and you know what? It turned out fabulous. Yes, there are variations in most all recipes, but they are really more like preferences, so keep that in mind.

2. In a large bowl, combine the big dry ingredients – oats, oat flour, fruit and nuts. Toss to combine. In a separate bowl, melt butter and whisk in vanilla, sugar, salt, cinnamon, peanut butter, corn syrup and water. Pour liquid over dry ingredients and toss to coat until everything is evenly coated. 3. Toss mixture into a 9x9 inch pan that’s been sprayed with non-stick spray. Smoosh and press to evenly fill the whole pan. Lay on a sheet of plastic wrap to press down granola to avoid sticky fingers. 4. Bake the bars (with plastic wrap removed) for about 30 minutes. Let the granola completely cool before cutting. Using a big knife, cut into strips, squares or whatever shape you’d like. If you’d like a granola used for a topping or for cereal, do not press mixture into a small pan. Instead, bake loosely on a baking sheet and stir often to break apart. Let cool completely before storing. RECIPE #2 • WHAT YOU NEED: • 3 cups quick rolled oats • 4 cups total nuts/dried fruit • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons maple syrup • ¼ cup vegetable oil • ¾ teaspoon salt

RECIPE #1 • WHAT YOU NEED: • 1 2/3 cups quick rolled oats (you can even use gluten-free oats) • ½ cup granulated sugar (use more for a sweetness like most purchased bars; less for a mildly sweet bar) • 1/3 cup oat flour (or substitute as we did and grind up in a processor 1/3 cup of the rolled oats or even steel cut oats) • Some recipes call for wheat germ – basically this fine ground mixture acts as a binder and filler – either is fine or omit altogether • ½ teaspoon salt (please do not omit the salt) • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon • 2-3 cups (total) dried fruits and/or nuts (raisins, craisins, dried cherries, coconut, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans) • 1/3 cup peanut butter (or other nut butter) 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional, hard to even know it is there) • 6 tablespoons melted butter • ¼ cup corn syrup, honey or maple syrup • 1 tablespoon water WHAT TO DO: 1. Preheat oven to 350. Spread the oats on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 15-20 minutes. Stirring often. Repeat with the coconut and nuts, if you are using them. Side note: the coconut and nuts toast VERY quickly.

WHAT TO DO: 1. Pre toast oats and nuts in a preheated 350 oven as in the recipe above OR combine all and bake in a slower oven of 250 for about 1 hour. 2. Combine brown sugar, syrup, oil and salt and pour onto dry ingredients. Press in a pan or keep crumbly. Let cool completely before storing.

TIP & TRICK If you’d like little chocolate chips or chunks in your granola (and quite honestly who doesn’t?!), just substitute those for a bit of the fruit measurement. Also, let the gooey sugary mixture completely cool before adding to the chunky dry ingredients that contain the chocolate. Trust me on this. A little FYI, chocolate chips are great added into a peanut buttery granola and white chocolate chips go great with sliced almonds and dried cherries. Mmm. Enjoy your granola and remember, whatever is on your horizon this year, be brave and strong, and go at it with all your might. Cheers to a new year!
