{ EXPERTS WANTED } WORK WITH THE RING

Each year, The Wedding Ring is honouored to work with some of the most unique and talented experts in Southwestern Ontario, helping these professionals grow their wedding industry businesses. In that effort, we operate on the proven theory that Content is Queen! At The Ring, we research, create and curate quality, need-to-know, wedding-changing, life-saving content, year-round, alongside our clients. We then deliver it all in print (The Wedding Ring Magazine) and online (www.TheWeddingRing.ca) to a geographically targeted bride and groom audience. As a result, our clients book more weddings and our bride and groom members find it easier to plan the ultimate local wedding. And on the odd chance you ever find Jenn, Anne, Kristen and the team at The Ring more than a few feet away from their wifi connections, it’s likely because you’re at one of The Ring’s Wedding Expo events which take place seasonally in Kitchener-Waterloo, London, Brantford, Newmarket, Cambridge, Paris and various other areas across Ontario. Couture bridal shows filled with over the top exhibits, live design palettes, and many, many engaged couples. If you’re a wedding professional who offers products that every bride should have, raises the bar on service and rewrites the definition of couture, we’d love to work with you - online, in print, and/or in person. The Wedding Ring will help you reach your target brides, share (and show off) your expertise, grow your business and make headlines. To find out how content marketing, online advertising, event exhibiting or hosting a Wedding Ring Expo in your city can change the way you approach the wedding market: contact brides@theweddingring.ca & visit theweddingring.ca/for-vendors

A Q&A WITH ROB AITKEN, OWNER & DJ, MUSIC CENTRAL ENTERTAINMENT, LONDON, ONTARIO Rob

Aitken,

Owner

of

Music

Central

Entertainment (♥) (musiccentral.ca) recently reached a milestone that not many DJs in Canada have been able to get anywhere near; he DJ’d his 1000th wedding (not 1000th event. 1000th WEDDING.) in November 2015. If that doesn’t make him an expert in the field of wedding music, we don’t know what does... So when the team at The Ring finally caught up with this busy pro, we asked him questions that surely that all brides & grooms would be wondering about... AFTER 33 YEARS, WHAT HAS CHANGED IN THE INDUSTRY? Over the last 33 years there have been some major changes in weddings. Alcohol consumption has gone down due to drinking and driving awareness. There are fewer church weddings now then ever before which created the all in one location wedding that very frequently involves having your DJ at your ceremony. 10 years ago this just wasn’t heard of. And of course the digital age has affected everything from planning to photography to DJ’ing. HOW HAS THE DIGITAL AGE AFFECTED THE DJ’S ROLE IN A WEDDING? Before the digital age the DJ was the keeper of the music. Few people had a music collection the size and scope of a wedding DJ. The digital age brought affordable access (and easy storage) to everyone. Now the DJ has to create something beyond the music and individual songs. It’s about how songs are played, order, flow, beat and reading the crowd.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE ‘WEDDING DJ’ IN THE FUTURE? The digital age brought the big change. IT leveled the playing field. The wedding DJ is a dying breed. Most DJ’s prefer the club environment where they entertain a crowd with a very specific demographic and typically, genre of music. The only thing they really need is personality and the ability to beat match too. Wedding DJ’s need to beat match but they also need to entertain an enormously eclectic crowd ranging in age from 15 to 95 who listen to all genres of music. The group of DJ’s that can and want to do this is shrinking. At Music Central we’ve always been wedding and event DJ’s.

never gets boring, and that’s part of why I do weddings. Even after 1000 of them. WHAT GETS A PARTY STARTED/MAKES IT SPECIAL? It’s all about the crowd. The DJ needs to be in sync with the crowd. The crowd is ready to dance when they’re ready to dance. It’s just a DJ’s instinct/experience that lets them read the crowd and know what to play next. We can’t make the guests dance. But the bride and groom can. The more time the bride and/or groom spend on the dance floor the more time your guests will. HOW DO YOU PREP FOR A SUCCESSFUL

WHY ARE YOU STILL DOING WEDDINGS? WHAT INSPIRES YOU? Passion! Every wedding is unique. We like to think of the wedding vendors, wedding party and guests as the soup. We’re all ingredients in making this day distinctly different and unique. It’s your wedding. We’re always looking for that spark, that magic moment from every wedding. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WEDDINGS SINCE IT’S THE CORE OF YOUR BUSINESS? I love being a part of this special moment in their lives. I love the couples that love to dance. PET PEEVES? When someone requests a song but then doesn’t dance. lol WHAT DIFFERENTIATES MUSIC CENTRAL FROM EVERYONE ELSE IN THE INDUSTRY? We’re more than just DJs. We help with the flow of the evening, planning the schedule. We have all this experience. And we’re happy to help. Just ask. MOST MEMORABLE WEDDING MOMENTS FROM WEDDINGS OVER THE YEARS: Those moments are what you’re always trying to achieve as a wedding DJ - that magic moment when the two parents, their kids and all the guests are on the dance floor and super enjoying themselves, or when two moms who don’t really even know each other yet are up dancing together, really having a blast... The magic moments aren’t scheduled - they just happen. Last Saturday I played until 4 in the morning and I would’ve kept going. Each group is different from one event to the other. That’s why it

WEDDING? We don’t use a template or an email or a checklist, nothing cookie cutter. Let’s talk. WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU THINK EVERYONE (VENDOR OR BRIDE/GROOM) NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT WEDDING DJ? Location! Location! Location! This is an important tip for everyone. Where you put the DJ affects the whole evening. If they’re too far away from the dance floor the music ends up being too loud and annoys the people in between the DJ and the dance floor. The DJ won’t be able to read the crowd properly if they can’t see the crowd. To have a great party, put the DJ near the dance floor!

MORE ON MUSIC CENTRAL: Music Central Entertainment has been in business for 33 years, has approximately 15 professional DJs on it’s team, and is a member of the BBB, the CDJA, is reviewed in TheWeddingRing.ca and has DJd events of all sizes, including The Ring’s own Brides’ Ball events. Music Central specializes in weddings and special events music, offering DJ services, live music, photo booths, lighting, karaoke and more. The Budget Spreadsheet The DOWNLOADABLE WEDDING BUDGET SPREADSHEET (visit TheWeddingRing.ca and search for ‘wedding budget spreadsheet’), created with the prices and packages of 1000+ Ontario wedding vendors, from London to Toronto, Brantford to Guelph and beyond, over the past twelve years, is one of TheWeddingRing.ca’s most visited pages online. Like your wedding budget, this spreadsheet is always under construction, and it’s based in reality. Use it to guage price ranges. Put the various wedding elements in order of priority so that you can budget on the higher end for those items, and lower on others. When taking each item within this spreadsheet, it’s obvious that you could probably spend less, and easily spend more, but you will most certainly benefit from this jumping off point. The Budget Spreadsheet is realistic, local, and can be a fantastic guideline for plan ning your Canadian wedding. CINDERELLA BUDGET

Centrepieces have always been one of our favourite design elements. They set the tone and ambiance for your wedding reception, making them the ideal detail to focus your reception décor around. For the rustic, romantic wedding, consider old wooden frames, lanterns, vintage hard cover books, slices of trees, painted mason jars and blackboard accents. Think

In this design palette, Tanya Wormsley, of AWE Events (aweevents.ca) takes risks with colours, blending ivory and cream colours together, going against traditional colour palettes for a soft elegant reception space. Tanya says that when it comes to décor trends, “Unique is a word we hear often from our clients. Couples more than ever are putting their own spin on the big day to make it reflect who they are. We’re starting to see a lot more mixed metals incorporated into design palettes which we love! Delicate laces are still hot, giving Weddings a traditional feel. Mixed neutrals, herbs and wild flowers are great options as well!” 40 • The Wedding Ring Magazine { ONTARIO } www.theweddingring.ca

Here, Brandy from La Petite Fleur (♼) (petitefleur. ca) uses soft, nectar-rich flowers like Scabiosa, Chamomile and Alstroemeria in her bouquets, chosen both for their ability to attract butterflies and for their understated beauty. The reception space features a breathtaking mix of intricate blush dahlias, paired with imaginative florals and bursts of fresh greenery.

Devon Crowell of DEVONCPHOTOGRAPHY (devoncphotography.com) is a preferred photographer of Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, as well as a number of other area venues. In this photo shoot, Devon collaborated with area wedding experts, successfully capturing the many gorgeous details - butterflies, tropical foliage, gardens, fields of russian sage - that can only be found at this incredible venue.

Meagan & Trevor Bauman | July 26, 2014 | This gorgeous London Ontario couple played out their love story in one full day at BEST WESTERN® PLUS Stoneridge Inn and Conference Centre (♥), beginning with a romantic ceremony at the historic Rose Chapel (owned and operated by Stoneridge - and located just steps away from the Inn’s front doors) and ending in a fabulous reception with family and friends, held in a Stoneridge Inn ballroom.

“To be honest, the theme was ‘Us’! We had tables named after movies (Trevor is a movie lover), we had Harry Potter tributes, and Teacups/pots for my love of tea! We incorporated the blueberries to pay homage to my nutrition studies (and they looked adorable as decor anyway!)...”

PHOTOGRAPHY: Love Knots Wedding Photography (loveknots.ca) “We really loved their style of photography, the price was afforable, and we really clicked with their personalities. We thought it was so important to be able to feel comfortable with them, and they were incredible.” CEREMONY: The Rose Chapel (♥) (rosechapel.ca). Located on the grounds of the BEST WESTERN PLUS® Stoneridge Inn & Conference Centre (♥), this century-old chapel has been painstakingly restored into a beautiful nondenomination ceremony venue. The Rose Chapel can accommodate up to 150 guests. “We were also sooo happy with the venue we chose. Stoneridge Inn was amazing. The food was incredible, they were so accommodating, and they were just overall really pleasant to work with.” RECEPTION: Best Western® Stoneridge Inn and Conference Centre (♥) (stoneridgeinn.com). Stoneridge offers multiple spaces for couples to choose from. The Town and Country Ballroom accommodates up to 220 guests with large windows overlooking the waterfall and gardens. The Somerset Ballroom has space for up to 120 guests, with a large stone fireplace and sage

green walls. The Townsend Ballroom accommodates up to 60 guests, also has a fireplace and features two large chandeliers. The Townsend Ballroom adjoins The Somerset Ballroom and many brides opt to combine the use of these two smaller rooms, using one for the cocktail reception or ceremony and then the other for the sit-down meal and dance. DESIGN PALETTE: The colours were blue, grey, ivory and blush. “Our theme was a bit rustic, with hints of blueberries, pretty teacups and pots, ribbon wands for flower girls and the wands were also used for our exit with all of the guests having one!” DÉCOR & FLORALS: Village Vines (villagevinesflorists.com) “Our flowers were an arrangement of dahlias, blueberry stems, blush roses, and scabiosa pods. They were provided by Village Vines, as well as some of our decor! (ie linens, chairs, glasswear, etc.). They also provided us with beautiful charger plates, linens with glitter and chairs.” BUDGET: $24,000 - “We were pretty adamant about sticking with it!” FAVOURITE DETAILS: “Both of us being Harry Potter fans, and Trevor having proposed to me in the Harry Potter studio tour in England, we really wanted to incorporate that somehow while still being subtle. beautiful ivory leaf crown for my head and it went missing the day of the wedding!! My grandparents had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary the day before and my grandpa had bought this huge bouquet for my grandma with babys breath in it. I ended up weaving some of the flowers from their bouquet into my hair instead. It made it much more special!” ONE SWEET MOMENT: “Our DJ had us choose a song that would be ‘ours’ - one that could be played at any time during the night and wherever we were, whether it be talking with family or caught up in something. When the song came on, we needed to stop what we were doing and find each other on the dance floor. I absolutely loved knowing that in that exact moment, we were trying to find each other to share a special moment.”

A Revival House Love St ory Sarah Brown & Connor Scallon chose to host their many outof-town guests to a full wedding day in one incredible location, Revival House (♥). This venue offers cathedral ceilings, stained glass, heritage and ambience, offering a destination wedding venue for the quintessential Stratford experience.

“Our best wedding decision was going with a venue that was as committed to our event as we were. We really needed help navigating everything...being two hours away added another layer of challenges. We met with Rob, Alysha and Chef Kyle at Revival, and they were on the same page as us. They became our extended family in the wedding planning process (and on the wedding day) and made everything perfect...And the food was overwhelmingly awesome. People still talk about it months later. The huge charcuterie board should be a mandatory element for any wedding held there.” -Sarah & Connor

We had such a great ‘team’ behind us that genuiniely wanted our day to be the best. It’s a pretty wonderful feeling.” DJ: Rob Wigan, DJ Wigs VIDEOGRAPHY: WeddingMix (storymixmedia. com/weddingmix/) BIGGEST PLANNING CHALLENGES: “We live in Toronto and our celebration was in Stratford as were all our vendors - which meant that we had to travel quite a bit. That meant we needed vendors to be available on days when we could travel. Sometimes they weren’t able to, so we would have to go in another direction.” DIY DETAILS: We created our own wedding invitations and all printed materials. My family

also made beautiful marquee signs with ‘LOVE’ and ‘SARAH & CONNOR’ as well as a beautiful ‘happily ever after begins here sign’.” FAVOURITE MEMORIES: “It was the most relaxing and stress free day... I think the overwhelming feeling of joy from everyone was the best. Everyone was relaxed and having a great time.” ANOTHER REASON TO LOVE REVIVAL: “Also having the ceremony and reception later in the day and at the same venue. it meant we could enjoy so much more of the day and didn’t have to worry about timing and travel. And our guests really appreciated it too as so many were coming from out of town!” ADVICE FOR FUTURE BRIDES & GROOMS: Keep it simple. If it’s too complicated and too much it causes stress. it doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful. WHAT YOU WOULD CHANGE IF YOU COULD: Nothing. It was the best wedding ever! GET LOCAL.
