La n g : Ornaments

By Janene Tindall I designed this centerpiece for a conference Chris and I just helped to coordinate. Operating under a very tight budget and under a deadline, but wanting to have something that was elegant, the search was on. A trip to Ben Franklin in Monroe, Washington served to inspire a candle centerpiece with only a few inexpensive components. 1. 2. 3.

La n g : Ornaments

Lay white paper onto wax paper and brush thoroughly with water. Brush on washes of paint in two chosen colors, allowing the water to move the paint around the paper and blend together. Let dry. Once dry, tear paper into small pieces 1⁄2” – 11⁄2” in size Put a dollup of glue into your dish and thin with some water. Brush some of the glue onto a small patch on the glass. Place a piece of paper onto the glued area and brush another thin coat on top. Continue until the entire outside of the glass is covered, slightly overlapping the pieces. Let Dry. Optional: as a final touch, outline the rim with a gold leafing pen for extra sparkle. Place votive candle in plain glass votive holder and place inside hurricane vase. The light from the candle will highlight the La n g : C a l e n d a r s overlaps of the pieces as well as the threads lacing the papers.

Supplies Glass “Hurricane” Vase - these actually have a boom to them and are close to 4” round. I used one that was close to 5” tall. Votive Candle Holder, plain glass Votive Candle Mulberry or Thai Unruh paper, approx. 8.5 x 11 sheet Wax Paper Mae Gel Medium, or other white glue medium that dries clear 1” inexpensive brush Small dish or lid Watercolor, fluid acrylic, or liquid ink Gold Leaf pen Tips: Be sure to glue paper only to outside of vase to avoid fire hazard. It is not necessary to cover the boom of the glass – just overlap under a bit. Mulberry and Thai paper is very thing and absorbent, but strong – a lile glue / medium goes a long way. Use the straight-edged pieces along the rim of the glass for an even line along the top. Start from the top and work your way down. You may use colored paper, but I liked the imperfect moled look of hand dying my own paper. Choose 2 – 3 colors that will blend well without turning muddy. Many different water based paints will work – I chose Lumiere liquid acrylics by Jacquard in Olive Green and watercolor paint in sap green. Lumiere is pearlescent and / or metallic, so the 2 tones tend to separate lending a unique finished look, as well as extra sparkle. Resources: Hurricane Vase: Michaels (tall slim vase, or large boomless glass available); Ben Franklin (4” vases available in 4 different heights) Paper: Mulberry from most cra or stamp stores; Thai Unruh from most art / paper stores; Michaels, Dick Blick (www.dickblick.com), Daniel Smith. Gel Medium: I use Golden brand, but Liquitex or Mod Podge will work. Michaels, Dick Blick (www.dickblick.com), Daniel Smith, Ben Franklin Lumiere: Michaels, Pacific Fabrics, Dick Blick (www.dickblick.com), Stampington (www.stampington.com) Gold Leaf pen: I use Krylon brand. Michaels, Stampington (www.stampington.com), Wal-Mart, Ben Franklin

As we enter the season for candles and cozy homes, here’s a tip from the self-proclaimed “Candle Queen of Bothell,” our very own Kelli! “Before you burn your candles, place them in the freezer for 20 minutes. This will help extend the burn time of your candle (sometimes doubling it!), help bring out the scent more, and make your candles virtually “dripless!” Remember - don’t try this with candles that are in a glass container!”

Janene has made cards for personal use for several years, and is excited to bring you the opportunity to use these lovingly craed cards yourself. Each card is designed by Janene and is Country Village History handmade. Many cards feature The Old Mill hand-colored or hand-painted images. If you’re looking for a Originally a hair salon on Bothell Way, this unique and special expression to pass along to family and friends, building was redesigned asa mill complete with look no further! a water wheel constructed using the drum from an antique crane. The Old Mill Building was Country Village History converted into two shop spaces. Currently, The Weed Patch and Seraphina’s reside in this cozy old The Village building. In 1901 a graceful two store farmhouse was built by the Ericksen family on what is now called the Bothell-Evere highway (SR 527). Six years later the house was sold, and it gradually declined as it frequently changed hands. It was then bought in 1921 by Alma Green. Alma was a Swedish emigrant and a real entrepreneur. She started a variety of businesses. They varied from a chicken ranch with 10,000 chickens to a profitable still during prohibition with, rumor has it, accommodations upstairs! According to one descendant, the still was later removed and buried in the backyard. (The still has been searched for with a metal detector, but not found.)

La n g H o l i d a y M u g s

The house was owned by the Green family until 1965 when it was sold to a general contractor who used the property to store equipment, building materials and junk in general. Periodically, he would let several of his employees stay in the old house which had no central heating. One for tenant remembers prying paneling from the living room walls and burning it in the fireplace for heat. During this period of time, the store is told, people lived among the bushes. One neighbor said there was a “den of thieves” living on the property, and they had occasional brawls. The house continued to deteriorate until it was bought in late 1979 by Rod Loveless, a residential land developer, who intended to remodel it for offices. A year later he was approached by a family friend who wanted to open an antique shop. The old carriage house was remodeled, and early in 1981 “The Farmhouse Antiques” officially opened, the first Country Village shop. The main house was remodeled next, salvaging as much of the original woodwork as possible. It was then leased to two more shops. Further back on the property was the original cement milk house. Many other changes and additions to the Village occurred over the past years. Presently a collection of more than 48 shops, restaurants, galleries and antique shops and antique malls are clustered among the extensive plantings of flowers and shrubs. Several fountains are located in the Village, including one that is situated in a stream that meanders down to the boat pond. Brick pathways with old-fashioned lamp posts and benches connect the various buildings. All the shops are individually owned, each with their own special flavor.

Helpful Hint - Tarnished Silver Quick Fix! By Janene Tindall

Have you ever been geing ready to put out the food for a special occasion meal and at the last minute pull out a silver serving piece you were planning to use only to find it is horridly tarnished? This happened to me a few weeks ago, just minutes before the guests arrived, and I had no silver polish. I was giving a semi-traditional tea for a baby shower and the silver salad tongs were the only ones I had. I was about to toss them aside when my friend who had just come with his wife, who was co-hosting the shower with me, piped up “do you have any ketchup?” My friend is an electrical engineer, not a tea party entertainer, so I had my doubts. However, aer reluctantly trying it, would you know it, the stuff worked! Ketchup, when used like a cleaner/polish, actually gets the tarnish off of silver. Just rub some on with a damp paper towel and rinse thoroughly, the tarnish should come right off. Just be sure to wash the silver piece with soap and water aerwards to your food doesn’t taste like ketchup. Maybe everyone knows this already and I’m just way behind the times, but just in case this is as new to you as it was to me, I thought I’d pass along the tip. Now just be sure not to use that silver for your deviled eggs, as it will instantly turn black again – another lesson learned the hard way minutes before another tea party!
