Own e r ’ s C o r n e r : : H ap p y H o l i d ays & Merry Christmas! By Janene Tindall
As Chris and I are writing this newsletter in anticipation of the November and December events and holidays, I realize just how much I’m looking forward to the winter season this year. I remember when we first married, it was hard to “get into” the holidays. I was used to spending them with my family, with our own traditions, recipes, and rituals. I had spent the last 24 years of my life celebrating this time of year the same way, with the same people. Although we spent time with each of our families during Christmas and Thanksgiving, it still felt weird, because it wasn’t what each of us were used to. Over the last five years, we have started building our own traditions, and each year I’ve become more and more excited about the season and festivities.

M y F av o r i t e H o l i d ay S m e l l s . . . What is my favorite holiday smell? I’ll give you a hint: this smell is not likely to be offered as a holiday candle scent, is not sung about in any holiday songs, and is best smelled with the serenading of seagulls and crashing waves. Believe it or not, my favorite smell is the salty sea air predicting a wonderful visit with family. I am the mother of two young boys, wife of a relaxed husband, and one of seven children who loves family gatherings. My parents live in Poulsbo and have the most welcoming and grandchild friendly home one could wish for, so family get-togethers are much anticipated and a lot of fun. Once we drive onto the ferry my heart rate drops considerably, anyone who’s ever tried to “make” a certain ferry but can’t find her kid’s shoes at the last minute, runs back inside for several almost-forgotten items, and hits every red light along the way knows what I’m talking about. Holidays spent across the water take a lot of preparation, packing, and organization along with a last minute stern voice, accurate radar for hiding children, and memory for food to be taken and gifts to be given. So, once we are on the ferry I can finally relax and think about the fun we’ll be having in a short while. The kids play with cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, while the adults stand around and munch while talking, looking at photos, and sometimes playing a game. The holiday decorations and treats add to the excitement until sadly, it’s time to catch another ferry back home. Since my holiday really doesn’t start until that salty Congratulations to our TWO winners, Amy sea air tickles my nose, that is my very favorite holiday smell. Cut the pumpkin in half, scoop out the seeds with a spoon or ice cream scoop, lie face down on a foil lined baking sheet. Bake at 350°F until soft, about 45 min to an hour. Once cool, scoop out the flesh and puree in the blender. Use it in place of canned pumpkin for all your pumpkin recipes – not only pies, but breads, cookies, soups, even ice cream! To get the best tasting pumpkin for baking and cooking, get the pumpkins designed for eating, such as the sugar pumpkin – but the carving kind will be just fine too, and then you aren’t just throwing it away. Fresh tastes ever so much better than canned, and you can freeze the leftovers for use another time!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy, stir in molasses. Sift the dry ingredients together. Stir them into shortening mixture in 3 parts alternating with a 1/4 cup of water each time. Dough will be stiff. Refrigerate overnight.
3 tbs. shortening 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup molasses 1 tsp. baking soda 3/4 cup water 3 1/2 cups flour 1 tsp ground cloves 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon
Cut dough into 3 pieces. Knead to warm dough slightly, then roll each piece out about 1/4 inch thick. Cut cookie out with a cutter of your choice, such as a star, heart, bell, bird, or traditional ginger man and woman shape. Use a drinking straw to punch hole in ornament for hanging. Place cookies on cookie sheet and bake 20 minutes, then turn oven off and let cool in oven. Remove from cookie sheet and place on rack to dry for about 3 days to totally harden. Hang these as is, or experiment with acrylic paints, gold leafing, and/or glitters, microbeads, or powders (brush on watered down glue in the areas you want the stuff to adhere, and sprinkle it on with a spoon). Seal with a few coats of acrylic based sealer in gloss or matte to give it extra protection.

This is a perfect small project you can complete in an evening curled up next to the fireplace, or during a great movie. The project is simple enough that it might be a good way to introduce embroidery techniques to your children, so you can make them together. Whip up a few for that special little girl in your life, or maybe even for you! They make a great stocking stuffer. Instructions: 1. Cut one larger circle from the pink felt, and one smaller circle from the green felt. Trim the larger circle using pinking shears to give a decorative edge; set aside. 2. Using 3 strands blue embroidery floss, blanket stitch around the edge of the green circle. 3. Draw two simple flower shapes with stem and leaves on the green felt circle using chalk or disappearing ink pen (or stitch free-hand). Using two threads pink embroidery floss (a different shade of pink for each flower), embroider around the edge of the petals using a simple back stitch. Using two threads darker green floss, embroider the stem and leaves, again in the back stitch. Using two threads blue floss, make three small French knots in the center of each flower. 4. Glue or fuse green felt circle on top of pink circle. Use hot or tacky glue to attach the hair clip to the back of the pink circle. Please visit our website at twww.theweedpatchstore.come for step-bystep instructional photos for completing embroidery stitches!

T h e Re a s o n Fo r T h e S e a s o n Luke 2, The Bible New International Version
Here at The Weed Patch we firmly believe that Christ Jesus, our Lord & Savior, is not only The Reason For The Season but is the Reason For Existance. Due to our beliefs, we like to include at least some of The Christmas Story - as found in The Bible, Luke 2 - in our newsletter. This year we have opted to make this page a little more visually interesting with a photo of a nativity scene. To do that, we needed to cut some of the end of the story out. Please take the time this Christmas to read the entire story directly from The Bible. We thank you for your support here at the store, and are looking forward to a fun Christmas seaason!
The Birth of Jesus 1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to his own town to register. 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. The Shepherds and the Angels 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 ”Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Jesus Presented in the Temple 21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.

Christmas Poetry By Janene Tindall
I thought it might be nice to add some Christmas poetry to the newsletter this year. I don’t know about you, but Christmas time is the time I enjoy reading classical novels and poetry (the good old stuff) the most. I did some searching, and this caught my eye. Christmas Bells, by Hendry Wadsworth Longfellow really spoke to me, because I remember this being one of my favorite carols last year. I tend to have a favorite each year, depending on what is particularly applicable to what’s going on in my life. I remember hearing the words to this song like it was the first time, even though I’d heard it a million times over the last 29 years. Having a child on the way at the time, I could relate to Longfellow, as he bowed his head in despair, saying “there is no peace on earth,” as sometime it felt like I was bringing a child into a world that has lost is joy, and is consumed by bickering and fighting. But then the song ends with a message of hope, and every time I hear the line “God is not dead, nor does he sleep,” I get a tingling feeling all through me. I love the encouragement, optimism, and truth in these words. Sometimes it is easier to receive and understand the message of a song when you read the prose, rather than sing it, as the words often just automatically come to my lips without me really thinking about them. So, I wanted to share this poem/carol with you all - I hope you find comfort in its words, and are encouraged to listen to carols this year with new ears, and find something that really speaks to you too.
F e at u r e d P r o d u c t : T h e C h r i s t m a s St o r y Demdaco released a new Christmas Nativity Scene in 2007 that we just love. It’s an uncomplicated scene with just Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus; they’re set against a backdrop of a “sanctuary”. The pieces are Willow Tree style, and the clean simplicity of the set adds to the emotional power behind The Christmas Story. Purchase this product either online or in the store; during the month of December, receive 20% off of any Willow Tree we have in stock!
Christmas Bells By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Till, ringing, singing on its way The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The Carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head; ‘There is no peace on earth,’ I said; ‘For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!’ Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: ‘God is not dead; nor doth he sleep! The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men!’

The Sudan Project By Chris Tindall
As many of you who have been here in the recent weeks know, we’ve been raising money for “The Sudan Project.” A childhood friend of Janene’s is a missionary in the Sudan. She is working in some of the most impoverished areas of Sudan, perfoming everything from medical tasks (they recently dealt with a meningitis outbreak, and she regularly deliver’s babies) to health issues, social structure, education and more. The money we are helping raise will help drill wells to provide safe drinking water for an entire tribe. It will also contribute to a new health center, which will eventually be upgraded to a full scale hospital. If you are interested in donating to The Sudan Project, you can do it through The Weed Patch or online at their website : http:// www.sudanproject.org/. Charity also keeps a blog, which is easily accessible via http://www.sudanproject.org/ We hope you’ll take the time this holiday season to get involved and make a difference, whether it be halfway around the world or here in our local community!
